Langkawi Hiking Trails

langkawi hiking tour

The main island of Langkawi has an area of over 470 square km, and two-thirds of it is covered with rainforests. Mount Mat Cincang and Gunung Raya dominate the eastern and western half of the Island. The virgin rainforest and towering mountains with hiking trails make Langkawi an excellent trekking destination.

Here’s a curated listicle about hiking trails in Langkawi that promise to take your breath away and immerse you in the island’s lush landscapes:

1. Gunung Raya Trail: A Trek to the Clouds

  • Time: 4.5 hrs
  • Distance: 7.9 Km
  • Rating: Hard

Gunung Raya  is the taller of the two mountains with its peak situated 880 meters above sea level. However, hiking Gunung Raya is the easier of the two, due to the 4287 steps built for trekking. The trail starts at a park near the Lubok Semilung Recreational Park. The starting point is marked by a large blue board with trek details. Lucky travellers can spot monkeys and hornbill birds, but various exotic insects will greet everyone. The trail is easy to follow as it is paved the whole way, making it difficult to get lost.

Gunung Raya - Langkawi Hiking

2. Gunung Machinchang Trail: A Path Less Traveled

  • Time: 3.25 hrs
  • Distance: 5.8km

Hiking to the top of Mount Matcincang is a different affair, even though it is a tiny bit smaller than Gunung Raya. The Seven Hills Waterfall is the starting point for this trail, which passes through well-worn paths, rocky outcrops, and bridges. The trail is not well marked, and it is possible to lose the way. To avoid bugs and leeches, it is best to complete this Hiking Trail in Langkawi during the dry season , November to March.

Joining a trekking group is also advisable to avoid getting lost and provide moral support for the challenging hike. The summit has several ridges instead of a single peak, giving multiple views of mountains and the archipelago. Pack your swimsuit to cool off in the Seven Wells pool on the way down.

3. Telaga Tujuh Waterfalls: A Mystical Encounter

  • Time: 50 mins
  • Distance: 2.3km
  • Rating: Moderate

Telaga Tujuh Waterfall , also known as Seven Wells Waterfall, offers an enchanting hiking experience starting from the Oriental Village near the Langkawi Skybridge cable car base. The trail, a mix of stairs, flat paths, roots, and rocks, winds through lush tropical rainforests, leading to the captivating sight of seven natural pools cascading into each other, ideal for a refreshing swim or tranquil relaxation. While the waterfall’s splendour peaks during the rainy season from April to October, its serene beauty remains a draw year-round despite a gentler flow in drier months. Hikers are cautioned of the slippery trail during rains and are advised to don appropriate footwear for a safe and enjoyable trek.

4. Langkawi SkyTrail: A Walk Amongst the Clouds

  • Time: 13 mins
  • Distance: 0.6 km
  • Rating: Easy

The journey beginning at Top Station leads you to the renowned Langkawi Skybridge, a favourite among locals and visitors. Accessing the Sky Bridge requires a cable car ride, and attractions surround it, including museums and eateries. The vistas from the bridge are genuinely captivating, offering an unparalleled enchanting experience.

Sky Bridge Langkawi

5. Bukit Kechubung Trail: A Glimpse of Langkawi’s Heart

  • Time: 59 mins
  • Distance: 2.6 km

This serene trail, open all year and less frequented, meanders through a dense forest, ascending steeply to reveal stunning panoramas of the town, ocean, and surrounding rice fields from the summit. Remember to arm yourself with insect repellent, sturdy hiking boots, and ample water to fully enjoy this trail’s captivating vistas and natural beauty.

6. Bukit Kilim: A Quick Escape to Nature

  • Time: 12 mins

Venture onto the 0.6-km Bukit Kilim trail in Langkawi, where a moderately challenging yet brief 12-minute journey awaits. Ideal for hiking, running, and walking this less-travelled path promises tranquillity year-round. The trail, adorned with ropes for guidance, meanders through dense jungle to a summit that rewards with stunning mangrove vistas. Here, amidst the wildflowers and wildlife, you’ll find a child-friendly route that unfolds into a panoramic expanse of lush greenery, offering an unforgettable glimpse into Langkawi’s natural beauty.

Monkeys of Kilim

7. Wat Koh Wanararm and Orchid Farm Trail: A Challenging Endeavor

  • Time: 3 hrs
  • Distance: 2.9 km

This 2.9-km trail in Langkawi is known for its challenging terrain that attracts many to its hiking and walking paths throughout the year. As you navigate this popular route, expect to meet fellow nature enthusiasts. The trail, embracing the forest’s heart, offers stunning views, abundant wildflowers, and opportunities to spot wildlife. Your journey includes a scramble over rocky sections and navigating through potentially muddy areas, especially during the rainy season. The highlight is reaching Wat Koh Wanararm, home to a majestic golden Buddha statue amidst steep, challenging landscapes.

8. Durian Perangin Waterfalls: A Serene Oasis

  • Time: 18 mins

Set off on a serene 0.6-km journey along a trail that’s deemed moderately challenging and takes about 18 minutes to traverse. Ideal for hiking, running, and walking, this secluded path, open throughout the year, offers a peaceful exploration through lush forests, culminating at the Durian Perangin Waterfall. Here, a suspension bridge provides captivating views of the cascading waters, making it a favoured spot for mountain biking and picnics. Rich in diverse flora and fauna, the trail promises a close encounter with nature’s beauty.

The weather in Langkawi is very humid, so carrying extra water is important to stay hydrated during the climb. Insect repellents are also essential to avoid the onslaught of pesky insects looking for their next meal.

Panorama Langkawi

Trekking and hiking in langkawi.

  • June 11, 2021
  • , Things to do

For a trekker, every hike is a new adventure. And what can be a better place to have the best adventures than Langkawi?

The island of Langkawi is not very popular for hiking, specifically free trekking. However, the two famous mountains- Gunung Raya and Gunung Matcincang, are a hiker’s dream. You can submit both of these mountains for free.

What more? Apart from these two mountains, Skytrail and Gunung Mat Cincang Jungle also offer great hiking spots.

Let’s start with the most famous site.

Langkawi Rainforest Trek- Gunung Raya

Gunung Raya is a dream come true for all hikers; for one thing, it’s free. The mountain range spans over 12000 acres of land and features a range of beautiful animals and birds. Moreover, it is the highest peak of Langkawi at 881m above sea level and offers the most relaxing environment.

If you are a beginner, Gunung Raya makes a perfect trek to enjoy your hiking hobby. You can trek to the mountain either in the early morning or after dark. The trek’s duration is around 4-hours and you get a choice to walk uphill along the road or take a stairway of about 400 steps to reach the summit from the base.

Gunung Mat Cincang Jungle

Gunung Mat Cincang Jungle is the ultimate paradise for nature lovers as it features a range of rare bird species and tree species. The trek also takes you through the dense rainforest of tall trees, orchids, and bushes, and a beautiful jungle stream where you can enjoy a rejuvenating swim.

Although the hike lasts only 3-hours, the whole experience will surely last you a lifetime. The trek allows you to set foot on Gunung Mat Cincang Mountain that is around 550 million years old. Isn’t that exhilarating?

Skytrail Trek

Skytrail is the most versatile hiking spot in Langkawi lies between the base station and top station of the Langkawi Cable Car.

This 2.2km uphill trek takes you from the base station to the top station while allowing you to enjoy the charm of the dense rainforest. You also get to see the natural bliss of a 550-million years old forest that features a range of interesting animals, rare birds, and stunning flowers.

Even though it’s the shortest hike possible in Langkawi, Skytrail doesn’t lack when it comes to picturesque views at every step.

Mount Mat Cincang Peak

Now comes the most challenging peak of all. Mount Mat Cincang Peak is the most grinding trek of all; however, it is not for amateur hikers. This trail is concealed from the general public but the most accomplished hikers know where to find it and how to submit it.

Starting from the base, the trek takes around 640 steps to reach the Seven waterfalls. And then you walk uphill through a steep trail to reach the summit of the mountain (701 meters above sea level) while passing through a rainforest. You will enjoy an ultimate panoramic view of Langkawi Island from the top.

The duration of the hike can be around 4-5 hours, depending on your fitness level. Trek to Mat Cincang Peak is sure to test both your upper body and lower body strength.

These are some of the many natural treks of Langkawi that are open around the year. However, before planning your trip, check the weather forecast for rain and pack accordingly.

Langkawi is one of the safest destinations in Malaysia , making it ideal for both solo and female travelers as well as family vacations. Whether you’re going alone or in a group, the chances of you coming across any dangers are extremely low. However, we are all about traveling safe, so we want to share some tips so you can stay extra safe and have the best trip of your life.

Most of the danger experienced in Langkawi comes from the very wild habitats that make this delightful island the enchanting place that it is. Travelers should beware of the monkeys , and not feed them, no matter how cute they may seem! These monkeys are known to steal anything that may be left out in the open, including keys, wallets and other essentials. So keep your eye out and don’t encourage them.

Those of you who have already been stung by jellyfish will know, you do not want to have that experience! It can be severe, depending on how big the jellyfish is. Langkawi does get these creatures floating about at sea, so be mindful of this when out swimming, surfing, or paddling the waters!

The rip tides in Langkawi are also dangerous, so be careful about  showing off or swimming whilst intoxicated. It may seem fun, but it can lead to a life-threatening situation, especially if there are no lifeguards around! Make sure you and your travel companions are aware of the tides each day, to avoid any harm.

The final thing to mention is that sometimes the local Langkawi driving isn’t very good, to say the least. So, be sure to watch where you go and who you get to drive you around to avoid any kind of accident! Keep all these tips in mind, and you are guaranteed smooth sailing during your 3-day itinerary in Langkawi.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour by Kayak: The Best Way to Explore Langkawi’s Coast

What’s better than tackling the small canals and mangrove-draped coasts of Langkawi island than by your own power, paddling in a kayak?

langkawi mangrove tour

The 99 islands of Langkawi’s archipelago are the jewel in the crown of Kedah state and one of the most attractive and visited parts of Malaysia. Set only a short flight away from Penang , there are many things to do to keep you occupied on your Langkawi itinerary , including a number of great Langkawi beaches .

We consider a tour of Langkawi’s mangroves one of the most exciting experiences — you can also get on a shared sunset boat tour of the mangroves , but what’s better than tackling the small canals and mangrove-draped coasts of Langkawi than by your own power, paddling in a kayak?

Langkawi mangrove tours are far more adventurous than the popular Langkawi sunset cruises and a good way to get a real sense of Langkawi’s untamed nature — if you are looking for other options, check out a list of other worthwhile Langkawi best tours for inspiration on other things to do while on the island. An introduction to the mangroves of Langkawi’s Kilim Geoforest Park

The northwestern corner of Langkawi is draped by the mangroves of Kilim Geoforest Park , one of the three main areas associated with the Langkawi Geopark, the first geopark inscribed by UNESCO in Southeast Asia in 2006.

At Kilim, a sprawling mangrove forest meets ancient gigantic limestone rock formations that formed some 500 million years ago. The beauty of Kilim is its stunningly diverse natural geological, biological and cultural resources. It’s also the only place in Malaysia where coastal karst formations coexist with mangrove ecosystems.

A visit here is one of the top experiences to have in Langkawi — and we believe that the best way to experience Kilim Geoforest Park is by paddling on a kayak.

The reason? You can’t get closer and more personal to Langkawi’s mangroves than by floating right next to them, peeking at their habitat of fish, insects, and water snakes.

How to reach Kilim Geoforest Park’s jetty?

First of all, check out our detailed guides on Langkawi Airport , going from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi and from Penang to Langkawi .

If you want to ride a ferry to Langkawi, see the latest info on the ferry from Kuala Perlis to Langkawi .

The Kilim Geoforest Park jetty is in the northeastern part of Langkawi, near the village of Ayer Hangat and on the way to Tanjung Rhu.

It’s pretty far from Pantai Cenang and Kuah, and you’ll need your own transportation — consider renting a scooter in Langkawi here or hire a taxi.

Here is a map of Kilim Geoforest Park’s jetty:

This is where most boat and kayaking mangrove tours in Langkawi depart.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour in a nutshell

Langkawi mangrove tour kayaking

Going on a tour of Langkawi’s mangroves is best done with operators who know the area inside out and propose eco-sustainable business practices in line with Langkawi’s post-pandemic reopening green targets .

German-owned Dev’s Adventures is one of Langkawi’s most established and eco-savvy tour operators who pioneered guided kayaking tours of the mangroves and their smaller, inner canals. For four hours, you’ll sample first-hand what it means to float in one of Malaysia’s oldest and most interesting ecosystems.

Climb into a kayak and take off through the mangrove forest to observe local flora and fauna like sea eagles and kites, kingfishers, herons, mudskippers, fiddler crabs and monitor lizards. A guide will escort you, leading the kayak expedition. Most tours include lunch at a floating restaurant, where you can also visit a small fish farm.

Getting ready for a Langkawi Mangrove tour by Kayak

langkawi hiking tour

Dev’s Adventure Tours can organize transport from your hotel to Kilim Geoforest Park. If you prefer to use your own to go somewhere else in northern Langkawi after the mangrove tour, you’ll need to get there by 9 am to meet with your guide.

Let me tell you that their guides are one of Dev’s Adventure Tours’ highlights — locals who speak perfect English and have a deep knowledge of the mangroves, the sea, and their inhabitants. My guide was Haris Mukmin, a young and enthusiastic guy who met us and the rest of the group at the jetty.

Haris whisked us immediately on a bumboat for a short ride to the fish farm-cum-restaurant where we switched to our kayaks — couples may opt for a two-person kayak and paddle together.

Haris explained the basics of paddling and safety before letting us loose in the water. He also handed out our Sippys — the reusable glass water bottles that Dev’s Adventure Tours provides to each of their customers to avoid single-plastic waste.

After a few spins and adjusting to our new vehicles, we all followed Haris across the channel and into the deep of Kilm’s mangroves.

Kayaking the smaller canals of Langkawi’s mangrove coast

langkawi mangrove tour

My favourite part of the Langkawi Mangrove tour was following Haris off the main waterway and into the side canals that criss-cross Kilim’s large network of mangrove forests.

We immediately started navigating along small canals where we had to proceed in single-file, for a kayak at a time was barely enough to slide through. The mangroves closed in on both sides, giving us a unique opportunity to observe this unique ecosystem up close. Haris was very attentive and skilled in pointing out aspects of the local ecology and natural environment.

Crossing the Kilim Geoforest Park

langkawi hiking tour

After paddling within the forest, most Langkawi mangrove tours return to the main sea channels where guests can marvel at the geologic formations within Kilim Geopark. Seen from the water level, the looming karsts are amazing.

At one point, Haris asked us to slide towards the mangrove coast, secured our kayaks to it with a rope, and let us take some time to rest and swim all around. It was very refreshing after having worked on the paddles for a couple of hours.

How a Langkawi Mangrove Tour ends: Lunch and Getting Back

The tour finishes back at the starting point — a floating fish farm that also serves as the simple restaurant where you’ll have your lunch. After leaving the kayaks, we enjoyed a lunch of fried rice with seafood — you can also choose meat or just vegetables.

After a relaxed hour for lunch, we spent some time watching the fish farm’s enclosures. It’s a bit of a sad spectacle because you know well that those fish will end up on a plate, but we were able to observe some rare species, including a horseshoe crab.

The bumboat picked us up again from here and whisked us back to the Kilim Geopark headquarters in ten minutes. We were ready to leave on our rental motorbike by 2 pm.

Langkawi Mangrove Tour: Final Thoughts

langkawi hiking tour

The beauty of Langkawi is its nature, and a mangrove tour by kayak is possibly one of the best ways to get out and explore it.

Striking out in the morning allows for spending a beautiful half-day on the water checking out the mangrove coast up close, and getting back to Cenang by early afternoon to continue watersport activities , a sunset cruise , or just chill with a sundowner on the beach.

Langkawi mangrove tours by kayak are recommended for families and couples alike. If you have small children, you can ride with them in a two-person kayak, and let them try some little adventure.
