Under the Kolathiri rajas, Kannur (formerly Cannanore) was a major port bristling with international trade – explorer Marco Polo christened it a ‘great emporium of spice trade’. Since then, the usual colonial suspects, including the Portuguese, Dutch and British, have had a go at exerting their influence on the region, leaving behind the odd fort. Today Kannur, 80km north of Calicut, is an unexciting, though agreeable, town known mostly for its weaving industry and cashew trade. For travellers, this area's appeal lies in its entrancing theyyam rituals and untouristed golden beaches (particularly Thottada Beach, overlooked by a smattering of easy-going guesthouses).

"The Crown of Kerala"

Kannur tourism.

Located on the Malabar Coast of Kerala, Kannur (fondly known as Cannanore), is a beautiful city bundled with a plethora of sightseeing options like beaches, monuments, ancient temples and picnic spots.

Steeped in the distinctive local art forms like Theyyam, Kannur still has an aura of the bygone colonial era. The deep footprints of the Dutch, the Portuguese, the British and the Mysore Sultanate are still imbibed into the town and can be witnessed all around. The town is blessed with exceptional art of weaving that has earned it the title of the land of loons and huge cashew trees perhaps rooted by Portuguese. History of Kannur

Kannur, with its rich and diverse historical past, is a city that has witnessed the rise and fall of various civilizations, making it a treasure trove of cultural heritage and architectural wonders. The history of this coastal town can be traced back to ancient times, with accounts of its existence found in ancient texts and inscriptions.

During ancient times, Kannur was a prominent trading center and a major port along the Malabar Coast. It was an important link in the historic Spice Route, which connected the ports of the Indian Ocean with the Mediterranean. The region’s strategic location made it a coveted destination for traders from different parts of the world, leading to the establishment of various dynasties and empires in the area.

The Chera dynasty, one of the earliest recorded ruling families in South India, had significant influence over Kannur. It was during their reign that the town flourished as a major trade hub. The Cheras were known for their rich cultural traditions and patronage of arts and literature.

In the 15th century, Kannur came under the control of the Kolathunadu kingdom. The Kolathunadu kings played a crucial role in shaping the history and culture of the region. They built remarkable forts, temples, and irrigation systems, leaving behind a lasting architectural legacy. The Kolathunadu kingdom also had strong maritime connections, with trade links extending to Arabia, China, and Europe.

With the arrival of European powers in India, Kannur became a battleground for colonial supremacy. The Portuguese were the first to arrive in the early 16th century and established a fort known as St. Angelo. The Dutch later gained control of Kannur and made significant contributions to its maritime trade and architecture. However, it was the British who finally took control of the city in the late 18th century and made it the headquarters of the British Malabar region.

Kannur was an epicenter of the Indian freedom struggle against British colonial rule. The town witnessed several uprisings and movements led by prominent freedom fighters like Pazhassi Raja, who fought against both colonial powers and local oppressive rulers. These rebellions played a crucial role in inspiring and mobilizing people during the fight for independence.

Today, the influence of Kannur’s rich history can be seen in its architecture, cultural practices, and traditions. The town is a testament to the harmonious coexistence of different religions and cultures, with temples, churches, mosques, and synagogues standing side by side.

Best Time to Visit Kannur

The winters in Kannur are very popular with visitors since they are the most convenient and comfortable season with a pleasant climate. Between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius would be the temperature range.

Although Kannur is a fascinating place to visit, summer is not the best time to go. By the end of February, temperatures begin to rise, reaching a high of 36 degrees C in May. The hot and muggy weather would make you want to spend your days at home with the air conditioner blasting some cold air, even though you could spend the day cooling off at the beach. It's calming to take a stroll and explore the otherwise tranquil town in the evening.

The quiet, unspoiled beaches of Kannur are best visited in the winter. It is the ideal temperature—not too hot or chilly, and there is little to no rain. The temperature is within a reasonable range of 14 to 25 degrees Celsius. In Kannur and neighbouring regions of Kerala, significant festivities like Adoor Gajamela and Pongal are exquisitely celebrated in the winter.

History And Culture Of Kannur

How to get to kannur, best time to visit kannur, getting around kannur.

Kannur is a coastal city located in the Indian state of Kerala and is a popular vacation spot with a very bygone colonial era vibe. Being a city that has played a significant role in the history and mythology of the country, it's definitely one that intrigues interest among many. Kannur is also known as the Land of Looms and Lores because of the flourishing fabric industry and also the many Theyyam temple dance festivals that take place here. The cultural, ethnic, and economic diversity in the city is very prominent in the way it celebrates its festivals and through its architectural influence as well.

With places to explore, architecture to admire, and food to treat your tastebuds, Kannur attracts people from all across the globe. You’ll be thrilled to visit a city that has footprints from its past influencing the diverse culture here and that's why visiting Kannur should definitely be on your travel itinerary. To help you plan the perfect trip, here's a Kannur travel guide that will give you all the information you need about this South Indian city. Check it out!

A part of the Malabar District, the city of Kannur has a rich and deep-rooted historical background. In the 15th century when the Portuguese came to India, they set up small settlements in the neighboring areas and Kannur was one of them. A direct sea route to India was also found at this time and that’s when trade began to flourish in this city. The open trade brought Kannur to the political limelight and thus began its journey to becoming an economic and political powerhouse for many more rulers and dynasties to come.

When the Portuguese settled in Kannur, they built the St Agnelo Fort here. That was an important landmark for them as all their operations took place from there. This fort was captured by the Dutch in 1663 and later by the British in 1790. Each of these invaders ruled over the region for approximately a century and left behind cultural and architectural footprints.

It was in the latter half of the 18th century when the rulers of Mysore conflicted with the British and gained rule over the Kannur region. But this conflict soon became the bloodiest resistance to British rule in the country. From 1792 to 1806 Kannur was consistently in a state of war and it wasn't until 1908 that the Indian National Congress established its committee in the Malabar District. Since then, Kannur was a part of the Indian Independence Movement until the country got its independence in 1947.

As rich as its history is Kannur’s culturally and ethnically diverse background. You'll find the footprints of the Dutch, Portuguese, Sultans, and British in different corners across the city. Everyone in Kannur celebrates their socio-cultural customs together as a community and that’s evident in their amalgamation of art forms and festivals. What the city of Kannur is also known for is its culinary diversity. Some of the must-try dishes in Kannur include Thalassery chicken biryani, Unnakkaya (sweet meatballs made with eggs, sugar, cashew nuts, and flavored with cardamom), Malabar beef roast, and Neypathiri (deep-fried rice roti that can be served with veg or non-veg curry or can be eaten plain too).

Go Check Out

St. angelo fort.

St. Angelos Fort in Kannur is super popular and gets lots of visitors for good reasons. The fort is ancient and looks really fancy and powerful. It's right by the Arabian Sea, so you can see a beautiful view where the waves and blue water come together. You can also see the amazing Mopilla Bay, which is a natural harbor.

But the coolest thing about the St. Angelo Fort is its history and the stories it has to tell. Lots of different dynasties, both local and international, were interested in this fort and fought over it. One Portuguese leader even locked up his own successor because he didn't want to give up power. It caused a bunch of crazy events and plots that are forever part of Portugal and Kannur's history. When you walk around the fort's walls, you can almost imagine the battles that took place there. There are tombstones for the soldiers who died fighting for the fort, as well as barracks and an old chapel to check out. And to make it even cooler, there's also Kannur's very first lighthouse right next to the fort, adding to its already magical beauty.

The Kannur Lighthouse

The Kannur Lighthouse is a really important landmark because it's the first lighthouse ever built in Kerala and the only one in Kannur. It's a pretty tall tower, standing at 75 feet high, and it was constructed back in 1903. The best part about the Kannur Lighthouse is the balcony with a light that comes on in the evening. You'll be impressed by its fascinating background, and the view is simply amazing. Because it's so tall, you get a breathtaking view of Kannur city, the vast Arabian Sea, and even parts of Baby Beach and Payyambalam Beach. When you go up the spiral staircase inside, you'll see all sorts of ancient navigational tools. They were made with incredible craftsmanship and designs that will leave you in awe.

You can also take a leisurely walk on the well-maintained lawns around the lighthouse or catch a fun musical fountain show in the evenings. And if you're curious to learn more about lighthouses, there's a small auditorium that plays documentaries explaining the history and importance of these structures.

Payyambalam Beach

Located around 10 minutes away from Kannur Railway Station, Payyambalam Beach is not just among the best beaches in Kannur but also in the state of Kerala. Spread across for around 4 km, you get to enjoy the golden sand and foamy waves of the Arabian Sea at this beach. It has a welcoming and peaceful aura that’s perfect for when you wish to experience solitude or find calm in the chaos. You’ll have to pass a small crossover bridge that’s built over a narrow canal to get to this beach.

Swimming, boating, and adventure sports like water skiing and parasailing are all fun activities that you can enjoy at this beach. Whether you’re looking for a calm and pristine place to relax or are itching to quench your adrenaline thirst, Payyambalam Beach can take care of all your needs and can definitely make all your visits worthwhile.

On April 24, 2024, the MICHELIN Guide revealed the brand new list of One, Two, and Three Key hotels in the United States. In this first ever announcement of MICHELIN Keys in the United States, hotels in Atlanta, California, Chicago, Colorado, Florida, New York, and Washington DC were eligible for the distinction. This announcement of the most outstanding hotels in the country comes four years into a comprehensive refresh of our hotel selection. The MICHELIN Guide now includes over 5,000 hotels across the world, and not a single one is simply a room for the night. These are places that significantly add to your experience as a traveler, each vetted and judged excellent in five categories: architecture and interior design, quality and consistency of service, overall personality and character, value for the price, and a significant contribution to the guest experience in a particular setting. Which brings us back to the Keys. The culmination of countless hours of evaluation by our team of experts, the Key hotels below represent the highlights of our broader selection. Like the MICHELIN Stars for restaurants, the MICHELIN Keys are our most outstanding hotels. In total, the 2024 MICHELIN Guide hotel selection in the United States includes 11 Three Key hotels, 33 Two Key hotels, and 80 One Key hotels. Want to know more about the MICHELIN Key? The Three Key Club in New York City

Expect: The highest luxury and impeccable design in Soho, Midtown, and the Financial District. Within the small club of Three Key hotels in the United States, four make their home in New York City. The Aman New York (Midtown) and Casa Cipriani (the Financial District) both make use of glamorous Beaux Arts buildings, the former a gold-crowned skyscraper in Midtown, the latter a glamorously restored ferry terminal at the very southern tip of Manhattan. Each is a refuge: an elegant, painstakingly designed escape from bustling city life. Meanwhile, two Firmdale hotels round out the list of Three Key hotels in New York City. Each is a quintessential example of the style and execution of the group’s co-owner and interior designer, Kit Kemp. Jewels on the Coast: Up and Down California

Its sheer breadth of size and variety means it’s no surprise to announce California as the state with the most Key hotels in America. Here, we’ll point you towards coastal gems like the sublime architectural achievements in Big Sur ( Post Ranch Inn and Ventana ), beachside luxuries in Santa Monica (in particular: the newly opened Georgian ), and wine country favorites like SingleThread and the Madrona . What we love: how each one of these hotels opens the door to the very best of their locations — and gives us a look at each setting through fresh eyes.

Across America: The Golden Age of Celebrity

Our French Keys bask in the tradition of ancient vineyards, stone chateaus, and historic palaces. In the United States, we see a different tradition. In Los Angeles, places like Chateau Marmont , the Paramour Estate , Sunset Tower , and the Charlie date back to guests and residents as illustrious as Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe. These are spaces that play ingeniously with their history, even as they forge ahead with cutting-edge amenities and experiences. But it’s not just California. New York’s historic artist hotspot, the Hotel Chelsea , once hosted Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol. Today, it decorates every space with art donated by former residents. Look too to the Chicago Athletic Association , a former member’s club for 20th century business magnates and athletes — now among the city’s most impressive and vibrant hotels.
