My recommendation

Very important when buying a prepaid sim card in Kenya, getting an e-sim or an international sim card for Kenya is that you have to make sure your phone is unlocked. All these ways of staying connected only work if you have an unlocked phone. If you are not sure about this then ask your mobile internet provider in your home country before traveling to Kenya.

Best e-sim cards for Kenya

The easiest way to stay connected when traveling to Kenya in 2024 is an e-sim card. You arrange everything online in just a couple clicks. No more visiting a phone store and swapping physical prepaid sim cards.

You order an e-sim card for Kenya on the internet, you receive a QR code, scan it, follow the simple steps and within less than 2 minutes you have a Kenya e-sim card installed on your phone.

Upon arrival in Kenya it automatically connects you to an available network and you enjoy data on your phone pretty much when the plane lands.

Make sure your phone is e-sim compatible before ordering an e-sim card for Kenya.

Why buying a sim card for Kenya

Most hotels, restaurants, bars and lodges offer free WiFi so why buying a sim card for your trip to Kenya. Well it is very simple, you can’t rely on the WiFi, it is often not working or way too slow. Uploading a video to your Instagram story could take ages.

Buying a local sim card makes traveling so much easier, but also safer. Having an internet connection at hand give you the opportunity to order an Uber, get direction from Google Maps when you get lost, solve language problems by translation apps, book a last minute hotel, find a good restaurant nearby, etc.

Many reasons why I advice travelers to get a local sim card on arrival or order an e-sim card for Kenya on the internet.

Where to buy a sim card for Kenya

Nairobi international airport.

Buying a local prepaid sim card in Kenya on arrival at the airport is the most convenient place to buy a sim card. Luckily this is pretty well arranged in Kenya and at both international airports, Nairobi and Mombasa, there are sim card shops that sell prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Official retail store mobile internet providers

If for some reason you couldn’t buy a sim card at the airport or may be you arrived in Kenya overland just like Traveltomtom once did, you will find out that there are uncountable places where you can buy local prepaid sim cards in Kenya.

In the bigger cities there are kiosks around town and little pop up stores, but I recommend you to go to an official retail store of one of the mobile internet providers. Simply locate the nearest one around you by using Google Maps. At an official retail store you get the best service and advice and most important is that everything is done by the book and they make sure that when you walk out of the store everything is set up and working.

Mobile internet operators in Kenya

There are 4 main mobile internet providers in Kenya:

All of the above mobile internet providers operate on their own mobile network, some have better network coverage than the others. Faiba is a fairly new mobile internet operator on the Kenya telecom market and Telkom is also a much smaller operator compared to Airtel and Safaricom.

When you travel to Kenya you will see the green color of Safaricom everywhere! They are the biggest mobile internet operator, Airtel and Telkom stores can be found pretty easy as well, but a Faiba store is definitely harder to find.

Prepaid sim card registration in Kenya

Every prepaid sim card needs to be registered on your name and passport number, so bring your passport when buying a prepaid sim card in Kenya. The process is easy and fast and shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes.

In most other Eastern Africa countries buying a local sim card is a pain as they need your fingerprint, a passport photo and so on. Check out my Uganda sim card guide for example, the process is hilarious. Luckily not in Kenya.

When you buy a prepaid sim card in Kenya you will get a physical prepaid sim card with a phone number that starts with: +254. As per February 2024 it is still very difficult to get an e-sim card when buying a sim card in Kenya. Most phone stores still only offer physical prepaid sim cards only.

Best 4G/5G network in Kenya in 2024

It is fair to say that the 4G network of Telkom and Faiba are way too small and not recommended for tourists. Especially if you are on the road exploring Kenya. If you travel off the beaten path the Telkom and Faiba networks are simply too weak.

Is there 5G in Kenya?

Yes, there is 5G in Kenya. Only recently Safaricom launched their 5G network  in the cities of Nairobi, Kisumu, Kisii and Kakamega and they expect to expand that to over 150 cities across Kenya in the next 12 months. Find here more info about the Safaricom 5G network service .

All other mobile internet providers in Kenya are trying to keep up with Safaricom, but you will see from the below comparison of the  Kenya network coverage maps  that Safaricom stands out when it comes to the best network coverage in Kenya.

Telkom 4G network coverage map

On the Telkom website they are talking about which towns are covered by a Telkom 4G network. All major towns are listed, but they only list 32 towns and cities. Any clue how big Kenya is? What does that mean if you go even a little off the beaten path? Therefore a Telkom prepaid sim card is not recommended for tourists.

Faiba 4G network coverage map

They claim to have the fastest mobile data internet, but ONLY in major cities in Kenya. It is therefore NOT recommend to buy a Faiba sim card if you are traveling to Kenya.

Airtel 4G network coverage map

Although Airtel is the second best when it comes to 4G network in Kenya, it does not even come close to the 4G network of Safaricom. They are investing heavily to update the Airtel 4G network , check the latest details in the link.

Safaricom 4G/5G network coverage map

There is no doubt that Safaricom has by far the best mobile network in Kenya in 2024. Period.

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Kenya in 2024.

After comparing the network coverage maps of all the Kenya mobile internet providers we can already conclude that based on the 4G/5G network in Kenya alone Traveltomtom recommends a Safaricom sim card for traveling to Kenya.

Prices Kenya prepaid sim cards

All the info below is updated with the latest info and prices as per February 2024. Prices are in Kenyan Shilling: $1 USD = 162 KES and 1,000 KES = $6.15 USD.

Let’s start with the smallest operator. A Faiba sim card is free and can be registered in one of their shops and they actually have amazing data packages. Here are some of the Faiba prepaid data plans:

• 8 GB data for 1 week = 300 KES ($1.9 USD)
• 15 GB data for 1 week = 500 KES ($3.1 USD)
• 25 GB data for 1 month = 1,000 KES ($6.2 USD)

When it comes to the best data package deals in Kenya, Faiba is by far the best! Faiba already offers an e-sim for Kenya. For more info check the Faiba website .

Calling credit can be added separately, the rate is 2 KES/min.

Topping up a Faiba sim card can easily be done online through their app, however you need to register an Mpesa account, etc. Not preferably for tourists. Topping up with other providers can be done literally everywhere on the side of the road at one of the million kiosks. I am NOT exaggerating! LOL

After I showed you the weak network, this is another reason why I would NOT recommend tourists to buy a Faiba sim card in Kenya.

A Telkom sim card costs 50 KES, but comes with 50 KES credit, you will then need to buy a data package for internet. Here are some of their best data plans:

• 2.5 GB data for 1 week = 250 KES ($1.5 USD)
• 5 GB data for 1 month = 500 KES ($3.1 USD)
• 12 GB data for 1 month = 1,000 KES ($6.2 USD)

As you can see prices for data bundles in Kenya are cheap for Western tourists. For more info check the  Telkom Kenya website .

Airtel Kenya

An Airtel sim card cost 100 KES and comes with 50 KES airtime. This airtime can be used as credit to put towards any data bundles. Here are some of their most common bundles:

• 3 GB data for 1 week = 250 KES ($1.5 USD)
• 6.5 GB data for 1 week = 500 KES ($3.1 USD)
• 5 GB data for 1 month = 500 KES ($3.1 USD)
• 12 GB data for 1 month = 1,000 KES ($6.2 USD)
• 20 GB data for 1 month = 1,500 KES ($9.3 USD)

Airtel is offering Free WhatsApp with its data bundles, but that is a joke. Because the ‘free WhatsApp’ is capped at 50 MB. That is sending 5 photos and a video! LOL

Airtel and Telkom prices are more or like the same. Check the  Airtel website  for more info.

A Safaricom prepaid sim card costs 50 KES, but also comes with 50 KES airtime to use for voice or data. They offer daily, weekly and monthly data bundles:

• 1 GB data for 1 week = 250 KES ($1.5 USD)
• 3 GB data for 1 week = 500 KES ($3.1 USD)
• 5 GB data for 1 month = 1,000 KES ($6.2 USD)
• 15 GB data for 1 month = 2,000 KES ($12.4 USD)

As you can see Safaricom is significantly more expensive compared to Telekom, Faiba and Airtel. However their 4G/5G network is also much better. For more info check the  Safaricom website .

As of February 2024 Safaricom offers e-sim cards for tourists. When buying a Safaricom prepaid sim card in an official Safaricom store in you can opt for an e-sim card for 250 KES extra. Great! But still, not every Safaricom store offers e-sim cards.

For example at Nairobi International Airport they had no e-sim cards available in February 2024. It is a bit a hit or miss.

To request you remaining balance with Safaricom you can dial: *144# and to activate voice and data bundles dial: *544#.

Best sim card for Kenya in 2024

After Traveltomtom's comparison of the prepaid sim card plans and prices of all the mobile internet operators in Kenya it is easy to conclude that Safaricom is relatively more expensive than other mobile internet providers. However, prices for Kenya tourist sim cards with data are cheap compared to most Western countries and therefore it is not the price that is the most important when choosing the best prepaid sim card for Kenya.

The most important when choosing a sim card for Kenya is the 4G/5G network coverage. Especially if you are traveling in Kenya and staying in some off the beaten path lodges in National Parks. Traveltomtom comes to the easy conclusion that  Safaricom is the best sim card for Kenya in 2024.

That said, e-sim cards are so easy to get that I often happily pay the higher price. Plus you are online as soon as the plane touches the ground and you don't need to buy a sim card on arrival in Kenya.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Kenya online

Does buying a sim card on arrival in Kenya sounds like too much hassle or you want to arrive prepared for your trip to Kenya but your phone is not e-sim compatible then have a look at the following.

Arrive prepared in Kenya with an international prepaid sim card. You order them online and a physical prepaid sim card will be delivered to your home address. You put this sim card in your phone and it automatically connects to an available network upon arrival in Kenya, basically when the plane lands you are instantly online.

Also a last reminder that if your phone is e-sim compatible you can order a Kenya e-sim card and arrange everything online within just a couple minutes. No more visiting a sim card shop, just a couple clicks and you are done.

My experiences buying a sim card in Kenya

The first time I visited Kenya was on my big overland trip in Africa and crossed the land border from Uganda. Right at the border there were no sim card shops and I could not find a place to buy a sim card for Kenya. Just 1 minute down the road there were plenty of phone shops, but since I was traveling in a bus I couldn't get off. I had to wait until I got to Kisumu to buy my sim card for Kenya.

Once in Kisumu I went straight to an official Safaricom retail store and got myself a Kenya prepaid sim card. It was done in less than 5 minutes. All I needed to do is give my passport and look into the camera for a photo.

I got connected to Safaricom and wanted to buy the 500 KES data bundle with 3 GB for 1 week. But when I dialled *544# it straight away gave me a promotion offer: 250 KES for 5 GB for 1 week! Damn Safaricom you just made another prepaid costumer very happy.

During my trip to Kenya I used more than 20 GB data and every time I could use the 5 GB top up option for 250 KES. I couldn’t be any happier with my choice for buying a Safaricom prepaid sim card in Kenya.

When traveling to Kenya again at the end 2023 I found out that Safaricom offers e-sim cards for tourists in their official retail store. At first I tried at Nairobi International Airport, but with no success. So the next day I went to a Safaricom store in central Nairobi and I bought an e-sim card. As I stayed for more than 2 weeks I needed a couple top ups. I found amazing Safaricom prepaid data plans for 2,000 KES ($12.3 USD) that gave me 30 GB data.

In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card in Kenya in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in Kenya. If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate Swahili – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in Kenya.

Best SIM Cards In Kenya

If you’re traveling in Kenya, we recommend using a SIM card from Safaricom, Airtel, Telkom, or Airalo. (I’ll get back to Airalo later on, so keep reading to learn more!)

That said, if you’re planning on visiting other countries during your trip to Africa , you might want to make sure to pick an option that offers coverage in other African countries.

How To Buy A SIM Card In Kenya

You can either buy a Kenya prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an African prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom.

Safaricom SIM Cards

Safaricom offers several different types of data-focused plans:

• 1 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 250 ($2.04)
• 2.5 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 500 ($4.09)
• 7 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 1000 ($8.18)
• 20 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 2000 ($16.35)
• 40 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 3000 ($24.53)

Airtel SIM Cards

Airtel has three different prepaid plans available:

• 2 GB, valid for 1 day for KES 99 ($0.81)
• 6.5 GB, valid for 7 days for KES 500 ($4.09)
• 50 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 3000 ($24.53)

Telkom SIM Cards

Telkom offers several SIM-only plans for tourists:

• 2 GB, valid for 1 day for KES 100 ($0.82)
• 2.5 GB, valid for 7 days for KES 250 ($2.04)
• 5 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 500 ($4.09)
• 12 GB, valid for 30 days for KES 1000 ($8.18)

Overall, we think Safaricom is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person. That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A Kenya Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different plans on Amazon. For example, OneSimCard works in more than 200+ countries and gives you data for $0.01 per MB. Nepal is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so have a look and make sure the countries you plan on visiting are listed.

This should be plenty of data for most visitors, but if it’s not enough for you it is still cheap enough to buy 20GB for 2,000 KES (around $14 USD).

Safaricom, besides having a fun name, offers the best and most extensive 4G and 5G mobile networks in Kenya. This just means that with them you will have the best chance of connecting to the internet as well as the fastest download speeds, which is why they are easily my number one recommendation in Kenya.

If you value convenience then you should also check out the Airalo Kenya eSim . eSims are always better than physical sim cards, however, I can’t recommend an eSim in Kenya if you’re looking for the best value. They are not at all competitively priced so you will be paying more for less data.

Kenya Sim Card Prices

A Tourist Sim Card in Kenya costs 1,000 KES in May 2024, however, the exact price will often depend on the store you visit and the plan you choose.

Alternatively, an eSim in Kenya will cost between $9 USD and $36.50 USD. This, again, depends on how much data you require and which eSim provider you choose.

I generally recommend this Airalo plan for most tourists visiting Kenya which includes 3GB of data which is valid for 30 days and costs $23.50 USD.

Kenya Sim Card Providers

In Kenya, Safaricom, Airtel, and Telkom are the main sim card providers, offering a wide range of services to meet the communication needs of the population.

Safaricom, the largest mobile network operator, is well-known for its extensive coverage and reliable services. Their products include voice calls, SMS, data plans, and mobile money services through M-Pesa, which has revolutionized the financial landscape in Kenya.

Airtel, another major player in the market, competes with Safaricom by offering affordable voice and data plans. They have expanded their coverage and provide excellent network speed and quality service.

How to Get a Sim Card in Kenya

Identify mobile providers: Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom are your best options in Kenya.

Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can usually be found in major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. If possible, I always recommend to to avoid airports and head in to an official store in the city.

Bring the necessary documents: It is always a good idea to carry your passport or identification documents for sim card registration purposes. We’ve found most providers will need to confirm your identity to provide a sim card and it can be a major hassle to head to a store only to have to come back again later with your passport.

Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are a good starting point, but the staff will usually be able to suggest the best option.

Pay and activate your card: Pay for the SIM card and plan, and the staff will activate it for you.

Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always search for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine.

Where to Get a Sim Card in Kenya

At the airport.

Buying a prepaid sim card for Kenya at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.

However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.

In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.

If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Kenya then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Kenya have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.

If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.

I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as Safaricom, Airtel and Telkom. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Kenya are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.

Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.

If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Kenya with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.

The first option is to buy your sim card in advance via SimOptions, which is a company that will prepare and ship a sim card directly to your door. It’s a reliable and effective service, but with the invention of eSims it’s becoming obsolete.

The better option is to purchase an eSim online. We’ve written more on that below!

An eSim is a digital version of a traditional sim card and is most likely the future of connectivity for mobile devices. The convenience of no longer visiting a store, handing over your passport and purchasing a physical sim card is quickly making physical sim cards obsolete in favour of eSims.

We recommend Airalo’s eSim when travelling to Kenya. The Airalo Kenya eSim offers fast internet speeds, wide coverage and extremely competitive prices making it a far more compelling option than purchasing a physical sim card from any of the local sim card providers.

Our preferred eSim provider in Kenya is Airalo . We used them, alongside a local sim card on another device, for our most recent trip to Kenya and found the service to be equal to the local sim card but without the hassle of acquiring a sim card in a store.

Airalo’s Kenya eSim uses the Airtel network to provide data and connect users to the internet. You can expect very good coverage and reliability with the Airtel networknetwork as they are amongst the best mobile internet operators in Kenya.

Using an eSim is new for many travellers, however, the good news is it’s surprisingly easy to get set up – even for the technologically challenged!

Here’s a general guide on how to use an eSIM:

Check eSIM Compatibility: Ensure that your device supports eSIM functionality. Many newer smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, and other devices are eSIM compatible including all iPhones produced since 2018.

Obtain an eSIM: There are multiple ways to acquire an eSIM. You can purchase an eSIM online from a provider like Airalo (which we recommend) or directly from a mobile network operator. Some devices also allow you to scan a QR code provided by your carrier to download the eSIM profile.

Buying a Sim Card in Kenya: What You Need To Know

Already daydreaming about the gorgeous Kenyan beaches, the Great Rift Valley, and the Maasai Mara? When planning a trip to Kenya don’t forget to buy a local sim card on arrival. It is the best way to stay connected and save on high roaming costs.  

In this guide, you will find everything you need to know for buying a sim card in Kenya: where to go, the mobile internet operators, prices, the best network, etc. If you are interested in watching a vlog about buying a Kenya sim card you can also find it below.  

Because of my big Africa overland trip I also touched down and wrote local sim card guides in the following countries:  Tanzania ,  Ethiopia ,  Cairo ,  Zambia ,  Uganda ,  South Africa ,  Namibia . Unfortunately, sim cards in Africa do NOT include free international roaming.

Are you traveling to Kenya and Tanzania then the Orange Holiday World data-only sim card would be an option. It gives you 10 GB data and you can use it in Kenya AND Tanzania.   

My Kenya sim card recommendation  

Traveltomtom recommends a Safaricom sim card for traveling in Kenya. It is slightly more expensive than the other operators, but it has by far the best network coverage in Kenya. You can get 15 GB data for around $18.  

Why buying a local sim card for Kenya  

Most hotels, restaurants, bars and lodges offer free WiFi so why buying a sim card for your trip to Kenya. Well it is very simple, you can’t rely on the WiFi , it is often not working or way too slow. Uploading a video to your Instagram story could take ages.  

Buying a local sim card makes traveling so much easier, but also safer. Having an internet connection at hand give you the opportunity to order an Uber, get direction from Google Maps when you get lost, solve language problems by translation apps, book a last minute hotel, find a good restaurant nearby, etc.  

Many reasons why I advice travelers to get a local sim card on arrival!  

Local sim cards are much better than global sim cards. I wrote an article about the  best international sim cards , but came to the simple conclusion that they are overpriced and NOT worth it for most travels around the world. Have a look and decide for yourself!   

Where to buy a sim card in Kenya  

Are you flying to Kenya then you most probably landing in either Mombasa or Nairobi. At both Airports you can find kiosk with Kenya sim cards for tourists.  

I also wrote guides for  buying a sim card at Nairobi Airport   and Mombasa Airport.  

If for some reason you couldn’t buy a sim card at the airport or you arrived just like me in Kenya overland, there are many places where you can buy local sim cards.  

In the bigger cities there are several kiosks around town and little pop up stores, but I recommend you to go to an official retail store of one of the mobile internet providers. Simply locate the nearest one around you by using Google Maps when you have WiFi .  

Buying a Kenya sim card online  

Make it yourself easier and order a sim card for Kenya directly on the internet. Check the following international sim card deal with coverage in Kenya:  

$49.90 USD = 10 GB data in Kenya for 14 days  

The above-prepaid sim card deal for Kenya will be shipped to your home address before your trip and the sim card will be automatically activated from its first use. Simply plug and play! 

E-sim card for Kenya  

Not everyone prefers to swap sim cards and besides looking into a  portable WiFi device   you can now also choose to get an e-sim card for traveling abroad. Unfortunately, there is only 1 e-sim card for Kenya available at the moment:  

$9.5 USD = 1 GB data for 7 days  

Mobile internet operators in Kenya  

There are 4 main mobile internet providers in Kenya:  

Safaricom  

Airtel  

Telkom  

Faiba  

All of the above providers operate on their own network, some have better network coverage than the others. Faiba is only 3 years old and a fairly new player on the Kenya telecom market.   

When you travel to Kenya you will see the green color of Safaricom everywhere! They are the biggest operator, Airtel and Telkom stores can be found pretty easy as well, but a Faiba store is definitely harder to find.  

Sim card registration in Kenya  

Every prepaid sim card needs to be registered on your name so you need to bring your passport when buying a sim card in Kenya. The process is easy and fast and shouldn’t take more than 5 minutes.  

In most other Eastern Africa countries buying a local sim card is a pain as they need your fingerprint an passport photo and so on. Check out my Uganda sim card guide for example.  

Best 4G/5G network in Kenya in 2022  

It is fair to say that the 4G network of Telkom and Faiba are very small and not recommended for tourists. Especially if you are on the road exploring the country and going to off the beaten path the Telkom and Faiba networks are simply too weak.  

Is there 5G in Kenya?  

Yes, there is 5G in Kenya. Only  recently Safaricom launched their 5G network  in the cities of Nairobi, Kisumu, Kisii and Kakamega and expects to expand that to over 150 cities across Kenya in the next 12 months. Find here more info about the  Safaricom 5G network service .  

Telkom 4G network  

On the Telkom website they are talking about which towns are covered by a Telkom 4G network. All major towns are listed, but they only list 32 towns and cities. Do you know how big Kenya is? What does that mean if you go even a little off the beaten path?  

Faiba 4G network  

They may to claim fast mobile internet, but ONLY in major cities in Kenya. It is therefore NOT recommend to buy a Faiba sim card if you are traveling to Kenya.  

Airtel 4G network  

Although Airtel is the second best when it comes to 4G network in Kenya, it does not even come close to the 4G network of Safaricom. They are investing heavily to update the  Airtel 4G network , check the latest details in the link.  

Safaricom 4G/5G network  

There is no doubt that Safaricom has the best Kenya mobile network by far! Period.  

Based on the info from the  Nperf Kenya coverage maps   above updated in January 2022 I would already say based on the 4G/5G network in Kenya alone I would recommend travelers to buy a Safaricom sim card for their trip to Kenya.  

Prices Kenya prepaid sim cards  

As you have seen on my Kenya sim card vlog, during my recent trip to Kenya I figured out all the prices for prepaid sim cards in Kenya. This blog is updated with the latest prepaid sim card deals for Kenya as of January 2022.  

Let’s start with the smallest operator. A Faiba sim card is free and can be registered in one of their shops and they actually have amazing data package deals. Here are some great deals:  

300 KES = 8 GB data for 1 week ($2.8)  

500 KES = 15 GB data for 1 week ($4.6)  

1,000 KES = 25 GB data for 1 month ($9.3)  

When it comes to the best data package deals in Kenya, Faiba is by far the best! Faiba already offers an e-sim for Kenya. For more info check the  Faiba website .  

Calling credit can be added separately, the rate is 2 KES/min.  

Topping up a Faiba sim card can easily be done online through their app, however you need to register an Mpesa account, etc. Not preferably for tourists. Topping up with other providers can be done literally everywhere on the side of the road at one of the million kiosks. I am NOT exaggerating! LOL  

After I showed you the weak network, this is another reason why I would NOT recommend tourists to buy a Faiba sim card in Kenya.  

A Telkom sim card costs 50 KES, but comes with 50 KES credit, you will then need to buy a data package for internet. Here are some of their best plans:  

250 KES = 2.5 GB data for 1 week ($2.3)  

500 KES = 5 GB data for 1 month ($4.6)  

1,000 KES = 12 GB data for 1 month ($2.3)  

As you can see prices for data bundles in Kenya are cheap for most Western tourists. For more info about the  latest Telkom Kenya prepaid tariffs   check the link.  

Airtel Kenya  

An Airtel sim card cost 100 KES and comes with 50 KES airtime. This airtime can be used as credit to put towards any data bundles. Here are some of their most common bundles:  

250 KES = 3 GB data for 1 week ($2.3)  

500 KES = 6.5 GB data for 1 week ($4.6)  

1,000 KES = 12 GB data for 1 month ($9.3)  

1,500 KES = 20 GB data for 1 month ($13.9)  

Airtel is offering Free WhatsApp with its data bundles, but that is a joke. Because the ‘free WhatsApp’ is capped at 50 MB. That is sending 5 photos and a video! LOL  

Airtel and Telkom prices are more or like the same. Click on the link to  check the Airtel website for the latest data bundle deals .  

A Safaricom prepaid sim card costs 50 KES, but also comes with 50 KES airtime to use for voice or data. They offer daily, weekly and monthly data bundles:  

250 KES = 1 GB data for 1 week ($2.3)  

500 KES = 3 GB data for 1 week ($4.6)  

1,000 KES = 5 GB data for 1 month ($9.3)  

2,000 KES = 15 GB data for 1 month ($18.6)  

As you can see Safaricom is significantly more expensive compared to Telekom, Faiba and Airtel. However their network is also much better. For the latest  Safaricom data bundles info   check their website.

Best Kenya sim card in 2022  

When comparing the prices and the data packages one would normally not choose a Safaricom sim card. However, prices for data bundles in Kenya are cheap compared to most Western countries.  

And very important is the 4G/5G network coverage. Especially if you are traveling in Kenya and staying in some off the beaten path lodges in National Parks. Therefore I come to the simple conclusion that  Safaricom is the best Kenya sim card in 2022!  

My experiences buying a sim card in Kenya  

I visited Kenya the first time on my big overland trip in Africa and crossed the border from Uganda. Right at the border there were no shops to buy a sim card. A couple hundreds meter away there were but since I was traveling in a bus I had to wait till I got to Kisumu.  

Once in Kisumu I went straight to an official Safaricom shop and got myself a Kenya sim card. It was done in less than 5 minutes. All I needed to do is to give my passport and look into the camera for a photo.  

I got connected to Safaricom and wanted to buy the 500 KES data bundle with 3 GB for 1 week. But when I dialled *544# it straight away gave me a promotion offer: 250 KES for 5 GB for 1 week! Damn Safaricom you just made another costumer very happy.  

During my trip in Kenya I used more than 20 GB data and every time I could use the 5 GB top up option for 250 KES. I couldn’t be any happier with my choice for buying a Safaricom sim card in Kenya.

If you use all your data or run out of days, your eSIM card will no longer work and you will lose internet connection.

What eSIM data plan should I choose for Kenya?

You can choose 5 days unlimited data, 7 days unlimited data, 10 days unlimited data, 15 days unlimited data, 20 days unlimited data and 30 days unlimited data. You can contact us at any time if you’re not sure which plan is best for you.

Could the internet speed with my Holafly eSIM be reduced?

In a rare scenario, yes. Operators enforce an international measure called Fair Usage Policy to ensure fair internet usage and allow all users to enjoy optimal connection. This measure might be applied for a period of no more than one (1) day. It’s beyond Holafly’s control, but don’t worry! If this measure affects you, the restriction will be lifted the next day, and you’ll have your original plan speed back.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM (embedded SIM) is a digital SIM card that can be installed directly into your smartphone or other mobile devices. It is an alternative to the physical, removable SIM card you’re used to.

Can I renew or extend the data on my eSIM?

Yes, you can do so by logging into your customer panel on the Holafly Center. You will find the data plans you can purchase there. Once you’ve made your purchase, it will be activated immediately on the eSIM you have linked.

Can I share data with other devices?

No, the Kenya eSIM does not allow you to share data or use a hotspot with other devices.

How do I set up the eSIM on my device?

After your purchase, we will send a QR code and manual instructions to your email. Either print the QR code or open it on your computer. On your cell phone, go to Settings > Mobile Data > Add Data Plan and scan the QR code. Your phone will allow you to assign a specific name to this data plan. You will now be able to switch between your Holafly data plan and the original plan from your provider. The Holafly data plan will only be operational once you arrive at your destination. Once you land, turn on data roaming on your cell phone settings and activate the Holafly data plan. Consult your phone’s user manual for more details on adding a data plan. All eSIM products come with comprehensive set-up instructions.

When should I set up my eSIM?

Set up your eSIM before your departure. Once you reach your destination, just activate the data plan turning on data roaming. We recommend you print the QR code to take it and manual instructions with you on vacation, just in case. Remember that you need internet access to install the eSIM.

How can I check my data balance?

You can manage your eSIMs and access all purchased data plans by logging into your Holafly Center through the Holafly website.

How many times can I use my eSIM card?

If needed or when changing phones during your trip, you can transfer your eSIM. However, note that you can only transfer the eSIM to two devices—the original one and a new one. Once you’ve installed it on a different device than the original, you won’t be able to reinstall it on the original device and you must deliver the eSIM from the original device to install it in the second device.

Can I delete the Holafly eSIM once I’ve used my data?

Yes! But keep in mind that you don’t need to do so. As soon as your plan expires your eSIM will no longer work.

Can I use my SIM card and Holafly eSIM at the same time?

If you are using an Apple device, you can use your SIM card and your eSim at the same time. Choose the Sim card for phone calls and SMS, and Holafly eSIM for data from your device. Please remember that if you leave your Sim card activated, your network provider may apply data roaming charges to receive or make phone calls as well as SMS.

How do I get a refund?

At Holafly we are aware that our users may have unforeseen events after making the purchase. Therefore, you can request a refund in the following circumstances: – You bought the eSIM without checking the compatibility with your cellphone. – You canceled your trip or you no longer need the eSIM. – Our eSIMs generally work fine, but if you experience connection issues, we can provide you with a full or partial refund. What will my phone number be?

This eSIM is a Data-ONLY sim hence it doesn't come with a phone number. The sim does not allow you to make direct calls or send direct SMS. However, you are still able to make calls and send messages via data based apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, Snapchat, Messenger, Skype, iMessage etc.

However, you are also able to add credit to your Viber or Skype account, which will allow you to make local and international phone calls directly to landlines and mobiles.

What do I need to do before I depart?

You may wish to print this email out so you have a hard-copy of the eSIM. Please note that your 15 days of service will commence as soon as you scan the QR code for eSIM.

How do I check my Data Balance/Allowances?

To check your data balance/allowance you simply need to dial *111*6# then press Call (star, one, one, one, star, six, hash then press Call).

If you receive any text messages noting that you have zero credit balance then you can ignore as it does not relate to your data balance.

Can I hotspot/tether from your phone?

Yes, you are able to hotspot/tether from your phone to another phone or device.

What settings do I need to change/update to use this eSIM card?

You simply need to have both MOBILE DATA and DATA ROAMING functions ENABLED/TURNED ON in your device to use the service. This eSIM activates as soon as you scan the QR code provided. It is on this date that your 15 days of service will commence.

What is the data APN settings for this esim?

The mobile data APN settings should automatically update when you insert the sim in you phone. If it does not, you need to update the settings so it states the following;

APN Name: internet

APN: internet

Details about APN settings and other important information will be noted on the instruction sheet that will come accompanied with the eSIM.

How many days is this eSIM valid for?

The features on the eSIM are valid for 15 days of service from activation.

What happens if I am travelling for longer than 15 Days?

If you are travelling for longer than 15 days, please purchase multiple eSIMs accordingly. For example, if you are travelling for 25 days then purchase 2 of these sims and swap them over at the end of the 15 day period.

How do I recharge this eSIM?

As this eSIM be recharged, if you feel you need more than 6GB of data then please purchase multiple sims accordingly. For example, if you need 18GB of data then please purchase 3 of these sims bearing in mind that each time you activate one sim you will have 15 days to use the 6GB of data.

If you are travelling for longer than 15 days, please purchase multiple sims accordingly. For example, if you are travelling for 25 days then purchase 2 of these sims and swap them over at the end of the 15 day period.

What happens if I have trouble with the eSIM?

Should you run into any issues with the sim whilst overseas then we encourage you to email us immediately at [email protected] and let us know the following information;

• Your order number or the name that the order is under along with the sim number.
• Which country you are in currently and whether the sim connects to any network, if so, which network?
• Did you receive any SMS after you installed the eSIM? If so, please send us a screenshot of that message.
• Message us screenshots of any error message you are getting.
• What phone model you are using?
• Any other information about the issue, which will assist us in helping you resolve the issue. 

How do I make calls and send SMS?

This eSIM is a Data-ONLY sim, hence, it does not allow you to make direct calls and send SMS. However, you are still able to make calls and send messages via data based apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, Snapchat, Messenger, Skype, iMessage etc.

How do my family and friends call and message me?

You can stay in touch with your family and friends by sending them messages and calling them via data based apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, Snapchat, Messenger, Skype, iMessage etc.

If I buy two eSIMs (one for myself and my partner) can we contact each other?

Yes, if you purchase 2 sims then you will be able to contact each other via data based apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, Snapchat, Messenger, Skype etc.

I am travelling with my friends and family, how do I contact them?

You are able to remain in touch with your friends and family via data based apps such as Whatsapp, Viber, Snapchat, Messenger, Skype etc.

What is your refund policy?

I am travelling to multiple countries, what do I need to do to use the sim as I move from one country to another?

If you are travelling to different countries that are noted on the "Countries Coverage" section, then all you need to do is restart your phone as you move from one country to another. The sim will automatically connect to a local carrier.

Will I still have access to all my apps, messages, contacts and e-mails?

Yes, you will have access to all your apps, messages, contacts and emails whilst using this eSIM. Nothing on your phone is deleted or changed and you can continue to use your phone as per normal.
