King Krule Announces 2023 Tour

By Madison Bloom

King Krule

King Krule has announced a string of tour dates that will follow the release of his next album, Space Heavy , which arrives June 9 via Matador . Archy Marshall and his band will get started in Minneapolis on Friday, July 21, stopping over at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago the following day. Then, King Krule will wind through Detroit, Montreal, Philadelphia, Brooklyn, Nashville, Denver, Seattle, and more, before playing his final U.S. gig in Los Angeles on September 25. King Krule will also play venues in the United Kingdom and Europe in October and November. Find the full itinerary below.

Space Heavy is King Krule’s follow-up to 2020’s Man Alive! Marshall wrote the album during periods in London and Liverpool between 2020 to 2022. He was largely inspired by the notion of “the space between” while conceptualizing his new batch of songs, which he recorded with producer Dilip Harris, saxophonist Ignacio Salvadores, drummer George Bass, bassist James Wilson, and guitarist Jack Towell.

Upon announcing Space Heavy last month, Marshall shared lead single “Seaforth,” along with with a music video directed by Jocelyn Anquetil . A couple of happy dogs co-starred with the musician in the clip.

King Krule Carves Out a Space for Himself

Ten years into his career, the musician still sounds fresh and experimental.

Archy sitting, holding his face, wearing a grey Etro suit

A tiny Brooklyn concert venue might be the last place you’d expect to see an act like King Krule, especially since he’d headlined the Primavera Sound festival in Barcelona the year prior. But there he was, facing a crowd of no more than 150 people at Sultan Room in Bushwick, bathed in blue and hot pink lights; his hollowed-out cheekbones and ginger flat top looking eerily impressive amid the shadows. The small crowd vibrated with palpable excitement, waiting to hear the latest King Krule project: a new album titled Space Heavy, out June 9. Lucky fans with quick trigger fingers who were able to snag tickets to the “Shh Tour” were treated to a preview this spring.

If you were at Sultan Room that night in April, you’d know the “shh” part was on point: between songs, you could hear a pin drop. King Krule didn’t seem to want to fill the space with salutations or commentary for the crowd. The scuzzy, lullaby-like melodies set against his signature baritone voice and lyrics reminiscent of Edgar Allen Poe’s prose said everything.

King Krule’s fan base is widespread and rabid—there are Reddit threads discussing such minutiae as which guitar pedals he uses and countless supporters who look for clues on when he’ll drop his next song. They love and consume every part of his career, his history, and how his music has evolved since Archy Marshall (his given name) stepped into the limelight at 16 years old under the moniker Zoo Kid. The crowd at Sultan Room roared with approval when Marshall returned to the stage for an encore of “Out Getting Ribs,” from King Krule’s first album, 2013’s 6 Feet Beneath the Moon . What makes Marshall even more enticing to fans is his enigmatic nature; he’s known to disappear for years between projects, eschewing a social media presence or public outings for complete and total privacy. He’s also notably averse to the press.

That much was evident on the day we met for our planned interview. He’d just played two shows, partied the night before with childhood friends, and had another concert scheduled in upstate New York the next night. Inside a Brooklyn hotel room filled with racks of clothing, he asked to chat another day. “I’d like to get this show on the road so I can go to sleep,” he tells me.

When we meet again, it’s over Zoom weeks later, where Marshall is seated on the couch of his new home in London, his hometown. That house is one of the many places where the artist created Space Heavy , his first full-length album since 2020’s Man Alive! which he released just weeks before the coronavirus pandemic hit. “When we was performing Man Alive before it got shut off, I thought we, as a band, was in the best moment we will ever be in, in a lot of ways,” he says. “We were playing better than we’d ever played. I had so much clarity and so much force behind myself, and I felt really good physically and mentally. I used that energy to write a lot of music and to play and to have fun.”

Marshall began working on Space Heavy during the summer of 2020. “I would spend the day outside, and then when it cooled down, I would go to my studio and have long nights there,” he says. During the next two years, Marshall traveled from his former home in Liverpool to his mother’s house in Southeast London, while booking studio time all over Britain to record.

One room in Marshall’s mother’s house that served as an integral space for making songs on Space Heavy . The musician refers to it as “my studio room.” It used to be a bathroom, he explains, with a tub right in the middle of the hardwood-floored space, but he has since converted it into a place where he can record in peace. “It’s a bit like a map of my brain,” he says. “It’s quite all over the place with different equipment. Nothing works. But I understand it.” There’s a big window on one of the walls, a couple of tables made out of old doors, his MPC, six speakers, and “kind of shitty, high-fi stag speakers.” There’s an enormous boiler in the room, which Marshall turns off when he’s recording. He insists the wires and old machinery all over the place may not have jived in someone else’s hands, but it works for him. “Only my brain could make it work. If someone else walked in there, it wouldn’t.”

While making Space Heavy , he was listening to all kinds of stuff: Transa by Caetano Veloso, Jonny Greenwood’s movie soundtracks, rock steady reggae. Although he says he has a hard time pinpointing any direct references that influenced the album, it’s one that feels like all of the experiences, lessons, and best parts of his previous projects, cherry-picked and consolidated into one piece of work.

In 2019, he had a daughter, Marina, with the photographer Charlotte Patmore. Becoming a father, he says, changed his whole world. “As I get older, more mature, more comfortable with how I approach recording music, I wanted to have a lot more precision and basically record exactly what was needed,” he tells me. “As soon as the album was done, [I wanted] to finish it, to just leave it like that. I didn’t want to create a surplus of recordings because it starts to create a bit of a fog in my brain.” (He tells me that Marina, now four years old, is currently obsessed with any track from Solange’s When I Get Home album, all versions of “Baby Shark,” and mimicking the deep growl of her father’s voice.)

Space Heavy travels between the darkest, most brutal guitar and sax sounds for which King Krule is known to songs that sound like lullabies for his toddler. The first single, “Seaforth,” begins with a description of a mysterious woman on a beach in Marshall’s dreams. There is a hopeful, loving tone to the track: “Despite the brick walls and the ceiling up here, I’m freer than the birds,” he sings.

“The song starts with talking about being emotionally attached to a memory, and it coming to haunt you,” Marshall explains. “But the song is also about my relationship with my daughter and the world around us.

“When I say ‘up here,’ I mean, ‘up here,’” he adds, pointing to his head. “So no matter what the surrounding or place you are in, at least here, you can escape.”

Marshall grew up between a house in East Dulwich belonging to his mother (who was also formerly his manager) and his father’s flat in Peckham. He comes from a long line of artists: His grandparents and his parents were musicians, art directors, designers, and costumers. In 2013 he told The Guardian that experienced “a lot of fucking weird shit” as a child, of which his strict father was mostly unaware. At 13, Marshall refused to attend school; he recalls that his dad had to physically carry him to class, otherwise he would skip and hide in his room. He was assigned a tutor, then shuttled to two different education facilities for “permanently excluded” children.

Through all of the movement and discomfort, Marshall sought refuge in music. He was posting songs on Bandcamp as Zoo Kid when an executive from the label True Panther stumbled upon “Out Getting Ribs” in 2011 and signed him as King Krule.

He was quickly hailed as the answer to the return of indie rock, the most exciting new act of the year. In early interviews, he spoke about how, inspired by his parents, he wanted to create music that is art, but not art for sale. “When you’re young, you get asked all these questions and you want to be perceived as intelligent, even though you’re not really intelligent,” Marshall tells me on Zoom. “But I always knew that I was going to be an artist, and someone who was going to be appreciated.”

These days, he’s changed his tune: “I’ve been trying to sell out for years. I can’t believe you don't think this record’s more poppy—that’s offended me,” he says with a chuckle. (Then he mentions another ambition: to write “a really shitty, really bad, romantic, period kind of novel. I’ll get it made on TV as well.”)

king krule tour 2023 reddit

Even if he harbors secret pop star ambitions, part of what makes Marshall unique is how he’s held fast to a scrappy, experimental approach to making and performing music. The “Shh Tour” was inspired by an idle night out in Portugal between performances, with his bandmates Ignacio Salvadores and George Bass. “After Man Alive! got cut, we played a festival in England the next year, the first time we’d played in maybe a year,” he recalls. “And I felt kind of soulless. I couldn’t get into it, and that alarmed me.

“And then we played at Primavera. I felt so comfortable on stage, just really chill and in control. I missed my flight back to London from Barcelona, so I went straight to Portugal. That was nice, ‘cuz I hadn’t had a holiday for about 10 years. We was just bored, so I was like, Why don’t we borrow some instruments this week and play a random club?”

The impromptu show was “nice” but “tense.” “I was really nervous,” he remembers. He pauses, lights a match and watches it burn. He rubs his eyes, then his cheeks, then his nose, his whole face obstructed by his hands. “I hadn’t felt nervous like that for a very long time, and I quite enjoyed the looseness of it, and also the idea that it was this close to completely falling apart. The compositions should be allowed to breathe in different ways. You know, you don’t wanna fall out of love with a project: you want it to stay exciting, you want it to interest you still. And that was the way of doing it, to approach the compositions in a different space with a different energy.”

With his reverb drenched guitar parts and deceivingly world-weary vocals, King Krule (otherwise known as Archy Marshall) chooses not to overcrowd his songs with unnecessary layers of sound, preferring instead to place more onus on his incredibly individual and surprisingly deep and crunchy voice. Infusing his youthful indie angst with an impressive lyrical palette, and being influenced somewhat by his interest in Hip Hop (have a listen to some of his Edgar The Beatmaker material and his collaborations with the likes of RATKING), he has succeeded in sculpting a very individual sound for himself. His live performances are not to be missed, if only to show you that he is far younger than his morose tone may suggest. His awkwardness on stage only adds to the tortured-poet image that he has cultivated, and he does not fail to exhibit his mellow-jangle guitar skills when singing songs such as ‘Ocean Bed’ and ‘The Krockadile’, both definite personal favourites. An emotionally simmering songwriter, he is also a skilful performer whose shows are well worth catching: This London based talent is not to be missed!

One of the best experiences. Not only as a sound matter but as a live performance matter. It was incredible how not only the whole team could reproduce the album sound but how every tune had an intense emotion of truth. Real emotions for real music, real music for real emotions.

Thank you, King Krule team!<3

King Krule was amazing, he sounds almost equally as good in person! The Black Cat was also the perfect venue for his show. The show was sold out and the opener, Show Me The Body was a little more hardcore than Krule, but I liked it. Killer show overall, 10/10!!

I seen King Krule in Glasgow earlier in the year after following his music for the last 2 or 3 years. I was there with my son and daughter. Totally amazing voice and guitar. Looking forward to the next gig I can get to, Paul, Derry

King Krule is a really good live performer. He really embodies the songs he sings and his emotions run really heavy during his shows. The Warsaw was a great venue to see him in as it was intimate and sentimental, much like he is.

Probably the best gig I’ve been to. He was ridiculously good. If I had to say one negative was that the crowd was a bit pushy but can’t really blame them as the vibe was off the Richter. Much love for the Zoo Kid

2025 NFL mock draft: Who are next year's top players — and how many QBs go high?

Rob Rang

The ink is barely dry on the 2024 NFL draft, but we are already looking ahead to next year – and so are the defenders.

After an unprecedented 14 consecutive picks spent on offensive players kicked things off in Thursday's first round, next year's class appears much more even, with a quality crop of cornerbacks and edge rushers ranking among the most intriguing position groups, with a handful of Ohio State Buckeyes among the headliners.

But don't worry, there will be plenty of playmakers available to teams with a premium pick next year — including a trio of quarterbacks and running backs.

No one knows how the 2024 NFL season will play out, so for this mock draft, we simply used the inverse order of the current Super Bowl odds (via FanDuel) to create the selection order.

1. Carolina Panthers – JT Tuimoloau , Edge, Ohio State

With "just" 12 sacks over his first three years at the college level, Tuimoloau has not produced the eye-popping production some expected after he signed with Ohio State as a celebrated prep, but don't let the stats fool you. The power-packed 6-foot-5, 279-pounder turned down a chance at a first-round selection this year to return to Ohio State. I anticipate will play his way into a top 10 selection cinch next fall.

2. New England Patriots – Travis Hunter , CB/WR, Colorado

A flashy dual-threat athlete whose playmaking ability is reminiscent of his Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, Hunter has the pure cover skills and soft hands to star wherever his future NFL teams most needs help.

Deion Sanders says Shedeur Sanders & Travis Hunter won’t play for some NFL teams

Deion Sanders says Shedeur Sanders & Travis Hunter won’t play for some NFL teams

3. Denver Broncos – Mason Graham, DT, Michigan

With all due respect to Cincinnati Bengals second-round selection Kris Jenkins, Jr. the best interior defensive lineman for Michigan during last year's title run was the ultra-powerful 6-foot-3, 318-pound Graham. A rare true freshman starter at Michigan, Graham bulldozed his way into First Team All-Big Ten honors a year ago with 36 tackles, including 7.5 for loss and three sacks.

4. Washington Commanders – Will Johnson, CB, Michigan

A blue-chip prospect who would have been the first cornerback selected in this year's draft had he been eligible, Johnson offers a tantalizing combination of size, speed, physicality and ball skills. The 6-foot-2, 202-pounder projects as an immediate difference-maker similar to the Broncos' Patrick Surtain Jr., registering seven interceptions over his first two seasons at the college level.

5. Tennessee Titans – Emeka Egbuka , WR, Ohio State

Year in and year out, the Buckeyes churn out first-round-caliber wide receivers and the pipeline will continue in 2025 with the powerful 6-foot-1, 205-pound Egbuka, who caught 10 touchdowns and registered 1,051 yards while serving as the second option behind Marvin Harrison, Jr. Already productive, Egbuka's numbers could explode in 2024.

6. New York Giants – Quinn Ewers , QB, Texas

Projected by many to be replaced by celebrated signee Arch Manning , Ewers instead showed off the accuracy and grit scouts expect of a future NFL starter, improving from a 58.1% completion rate to 69% with an impressive 37-12 touchdown-to-interception ratio over his two seasons in Austin.

Steve Sarkisian, Texas HC names Quinn Ewers QB1 over Arch Manning

7. Arizona Cardinals – Kelvin Banks Jr ., OT, Texas

Banks has been money at left tackle for the Longhorns the past two seasons, earning all-conference accolades both years, including first-team honors in 2023. Similar in some ways to this year's No. 20 overall selection Troy Fautanu, Banks' lack of ideal height — Texas lists him at 6-foot-4 and 324 pounds) — may push him inside to guard in the NFL. Regardless, he's great lineman.

8. Minnesota Vikings – Nic Scourton , Edge, Texas A&M

One of the most celebrated transfers of the offseason, Scourton returned to his home state of Texas after leading the Big Ten with 10 sacks a year ago at Purdue (among his 50 overall stops, including 15 tackles for loss). At 6-foot-4 and 280 pounds, Scourton combines prototypical size with good snap anticipation and power.

9. Las Vegas Raiders – Shedeur Sanders , QB, Colorado

Despite what his gaudy statistics suggest (27 touchdown passes compared to just three interceptions in 2023), Sanders won't be a fit for every team. But his awareness, accuracy, touch and mobility makes him one of the more intriguing dual-threat quarterbacks in college football, projecting similarly as former PAC-12 foe Bo Nix.

Do Shedeur Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes have a target on their backs?

Do Shedeur Sanders, Colorado Buffaloes have a target on their backs?

10. New Orleans Saints – Ollie Gordon II , RB, Oklahoma State

Only one running back was selected in the first two rounds of the 2024 NFL draft (Carolina took Texas' Jonathon Brooks at No. 46 overall) and that vacuum could be filled next spring with several quality options. Gordon was the Big 12's Offensive Player of the Year and the Doak Walker Award winner as the nation's top back, leading the country with 1,732 rushing yards and finishing second with 21 rushing touchdowns.

11. Seattle Seahawks – Deone Walker , DT, Kentucky

Football is a big man's game and they don't come much bigger than the 6-foot-6, 346-pound Walker, who earned Second Team All-SEC honors from league coaches a year ago after leading the Wildcats in tackles for loss (12.5) and sacks (7.5) despite fighting near-constant double-teams.

12. Indianapolis Colts – Will Campbell , OT, LSU

The 6-foot-6, 320-pound Campbell (along with right tackle Emery Jones) played a critical but underrated role in Jayden Daniels' run to the Heisman Trophy. An immediate standout who earned second-team All-SEC honors from league coaches as a true freshman, Campbell ascended to first-team honors in 2023, showing off the size, agility and strength to warrant an early first-round pick.

13. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – Donovan Jackson , OG, Ohio State

A powerfully built 6-foot-4, 320-pounder, Jackson is the latest in the long line of former five-star recruits polishing their game at Ohio State before earning a high selection in the NFL. He generated all-conference honors at left guard following each of the past two seasons, including first-team accolades by both the media and league coaches in 2023, but nevertheless returned for a chance at a national championship.

14. Pittsburgh Steelers – Luther Burden III , WR, Missouri

A natural playmaker as both a receiver and returner, Burden has lived up to his prep hype as a five-star recruit, finishing second in the SEC in 2023 with 1,212 receiving yards and nine touchdown receptions. Powerfully built at 5-foot-11 and 208 pounds, Burden is appropriately named as he is a real problem for defensive backs.

15. Los Angeles Chargers – James Pearce Jr ., Edge, Tennessee

Pearce led the SEC with 10 sacks in 2023 and finished second in the conference with 15 tackles for loss. Listed by the Vols at 6-foot-5 and 242 pounds, Pearce has a lean, lanky frame that can handle another 10-15 pounds without sacrificing his trademark burst and bend off the edge.

16. Jacksonville Jaguars – Princely Umanmielen , Edge, Mississippi

A four-year producer at Florida with 24.5 tackles for loss (including 14.5 sacks), Umanmielen transferred to Ole Miss in the offseason in hopes that a change of scenery could result in a breakout campaign. Umanmielen (6-foot-5, 255 pounds) has the size and explosiveness scouts want to develop, but he needs to show greater consistency.

17. Chicago Bears – Ajani Cornelius , OT, Oregon

As opposed to most Ducks flying south for the winter, this one flew west from the Bronx (by way of the University of Rhode Island), joining Oregon in 2023 as one of the more celebrated blockers in the transfer portal. The 6-foot-5, 310-pounder had no trouble with the jump in competition, earning Honorable Mention All-PAC-12 honors last year, allowing just a single sack and providing plenty of punch in the running game.

18. Cleveland Browns – Jalen Milroe , QB, Alabama

To earn a first - round NFL draft selection, Milroe will have to show significant improvement as a pocket passer, but he has a head coach in Kalen DeBoer who can develop his accuracy and anticipation and, of course, already boasts elite size and athleticism. Milroe will be one of the most fascinating and closely scrutinized prospects in the country next season.

19. Los Angeles Rams – Smael Mondon Jr ., ILB, Georgia

As the NFL increasingly spreads horizontally, as well as vertically, linebackers with true sideline-to-sideline speed are jumping in value. Mondon is a 6-foot-2, 230-pound heat-seeking missile who could be on the verge of a Butkus Award season.

20. New York Jets – Colston Loveland , TE, Michigan

With just six touchdown receptions to his credit, Loveland likely won't generate first-round buzz from those scouting stat sheets, but the 6-foot-5, 245-pounder possesses the soft hands and balance through contact to be a monster in the middle in the NFL.

21. Atlanta Falcons – Mykel Williams , DL, Georgia

There wasn't a member of the Georgia defense drafted in the first round this year but don't expect that to be a trend. The twitchy 6-foot-5, 265-pound Williams is still growing into his body, but scouts are excited about his upside — and that is after he led the Bulldogs with 4.5 sacks a year ago.

Falcons select Michael Penix Jr. 8th overall in the ’shocker’ of the NFL Draft

Falcons select Michael Penix Jr. 8th overall in the ’shocker’ of the NFL Draft

22. Miami Dolphins – Benjamin Morrison , CB, Notre Dame

A true ballhawk with nine interceptions recorded over his first two seasons, the six-foot, 186-pound Morrison is well known for his soft hands and instincts in coverage, but scouts also like his reliability as an open-field tackler.

23. Green Bay Packers – Blake Miller , OT, Clemson

It isn't often that true freshmen start at blue-blood programs like Clemson, but that is the road Miller has traveled on his way to the NFL, earning the nod at right tackle in all 27 games of his college career. Balanced and powerful at 6-foot-6 and 310 pounds, Miller could be Clemson's highest-drafted blocker of the Dabo Swinney era.

24. Philadelphia Eagles – Collin Oliver , LB, Oklahoma State

Whether off the edge or in more of a traditional linebacker role, Oliver is a proven playmaker, registering an eye-popping 38.5 tackles for loss and 21.5 sacks among his 130 career tackles. At 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds, Oliver won't be a fit for everyone — just those willing to prioritize big plays over prototypical size.

25. Houston Texans – Harold Perkins, Edge, LSU

At 6-foot-1 and 220 pounds, Perkins lacks the bulk the NFL prefers off the edge, but his explosive burst and closing speed are undeniable. He enters his junior campaign having already recorded 27 tackles for loss and 13 sacks, along with seven forced fumbles.

26. Dallas Cowboys – Danny Stutsman , LB, Oklahoma

After leading the Big 12 in tackles in 2022 and earning All-American accolades (despite battling injury) a year ago, Stutsman was thought to be a shoo-in to join the 2024 NFL draft. Instead, by returning, the rangy 6-foot-4, 241 has a chance at being the first off-ball linebacker selected next spring. He certainly checks boxes for his playmaking ability, recording 267 tackles, including 28 tackles for loss already.

27. Buffalo Bills – Denzel Burke , CB, Ohio State

The first cornerback didn't come off the board until No. 22 overall this year, but Burke is part of a very intriguing class that looks like one of 2025's strongest groups. Silky smooth in coverage, Burke just needs to show more ball-hawking skills, turning just two of his 26 career pass breakups into interceptions.

28. Detroit Lions – Abdul Carter , Edge, Penn State

Ever since James Franklin took over at Penn State, the Nittany Lions have churned out edge rushers and all indications are that Carter is next. Even while splitting duties with 2023 top-100 draft picks Chop Robinson and Adisa Isaac, the 6-foot-3, 250-pound Carter earned first-team All-Big Ten honors with 5.5 tackles for loss, including 4.5 sacks.

29. Cincinnati Bengals – Jonah Monheim , OL, USC

A four-year starter with experience at both tackle spots as well as right guard, Monheim is expected to slide inside to center in 2024, showing off a combination of size, agility and versatility that helped earn former Duke blocker Graham Barton Tampa Bay's top pick, No. 26 overall.

30. Baltimore Ravens – Ashton Gillotte , Edge, Louisville

A surprise returnee after earning first-team All-ACC honors with 45 tackles, including 14.5 for loss and 11 sacks, Gillotte is a slippery — if unconventionally built (6-foot-3, 275 pounds) — edge rusher with the burst and bend that translates well to the next level.

31. Kansas City Chiefs – Quinshon Judkins , RB, Ohio State

A transfer from Ole Miss, where Judkins was the first running back from the SEC to score 15+ touchdowns in each of his first two seasons since the legendary Herschel Walker (Georgia), the six-foot, 219-pound Judkins is a greasy runner who accelerates smoothly and slithers his way through arm tackles.

32. San Francisco 49ers – Tyler Booker , OG, Alabama

A physical mauler similar in many ways to his former Alabama teammate, JC Latham (now a member of the Tennessee Titans ), the 6-foot-5, 352-pound Booker cracked the starting lineup in 2023 and immediately earned All-SEC honors. Scouts will love the fact that he enjoyed his strongest performance of the year last season in the SEC Championship victory over Georgia.

king krule tour 2023 reddit

Taylor Swift has dominated all 10 spots on Billboard's Hot 100 chart once before with "Midnights," and now the pop star is claiming the top 14 spots for her newest era "The Tortured Poets Department."

  • “Fortnight” feat. Post Malone
  • “I Can Do It With a Broken Heart”
  • “The Tortured Poets Department”
  • “So Long, London”

All 31 songs from Swift's 11th studio album made the top 100 plus "Cruel Summer" from "Lover," according to Billboard . This adds to Swift's collection of records. "Tortured Poets" is her 14th chart-topping album, tying her with Jay-Z for the most No. 1s by a solo artist. The Beatles have 19.

When it comes to singles leading the Hot 100, "Fortnight" is Swift's 12th chart-topping hit. She's hit the number one spot for:

  • “Fortnight” feat. Post Malone from "The Tortured Poets Department"
  • “Is It Over Now? (Taylor’s Version)" from "1989 (Taylor's Version)"
  • “Cruel Summer" from "Lover"
  • “Anti-Hero" from "Midnights"

'Tortured Poets' takes No. 2 slot for album sales

As far as sales numbers, the album of 31 tracks earned 2.61 million album units in the U.S. with 1.914 million being traditional album sales (vinyls, CDs, cassettes and digital downloads). In 2014, Billboard began ranking the most popular album units (instead of traditional album sales). Since then, Adele and Swift have led the pack for the 10 biggest weeks :

  • Adele: "25," 3.482 million, Dec. 12, 2015
  • Taylor Swift: "The Tortured Poets Department," 2.61 million, May 4, 2024
  • Taylor Swift: "1989 (Taylor’s Version)," 1.653 million, Nov. 11, 2023
  • Taylor Swift: "Midnights," 1.578 million, Nov. 5, 2022
  • Taylor Swift: "Reputation," 1.238 million, Dec. 2, 2017
  • Adele: "25," 1.193 million, Jan. 9, 2016
  • Adele: "25," 1.162 million, Dec. 19, 2015
  • Drake: "Views," 1.039 million, May 21, 2016
  • Taylor Swift: "Lover," 867,000, Sept. 7, 2019
  • Taylor Swift: "Folklore," 846,000, Aug. 8, 2020

According to Luminate, an entertainment industry data and analytics company, Adele's album "25" is the only album in the top 10 with more than one successful week of album equivalent units sold.

'My mind is blown.'

Swift took to social media on Sunday to thank her fans: "My mind is blown. I’m completely floored by the love you’ve shown this album. 2.6 million ARE YOU ACTUALLY SERIOUS?? Thank you for listening, streaming, and welcoming Tortured Poets into your life. Feeling completely overwhelmed. I was already so fired up to get back to the tour but you doing THIS?? May 9th can’t come soon enough 🤍."

May 9 refers to her next Eras Tour concert in Paris, France, where fans believe she will incorporate the new album into her colossal set .

For the love of vinyl

From "Fortnight" to "The Manuscript," Swift has been promoting her newest creation with several partners, inundating the news and social media with the release. Spotify built a library pop-up in Los Angeles full of Easter eggs. Swift became the first artist to reach a billion streams on the platform in just five days. Apple Music featured a game where Swifties could search lyrics for a secret code leading them to the first line of "How Did It End?": "We hereby conduct this post mortem." In a tweet , the streaming service said "the album broke the record for biggest pop album of all time by first-day streams."

As for vinyls, Swift sold 859,000 copies, smashing her previous record of 693,000 for "1989 (Taylor's Version)." One factor that contributed to the new historic win is she sold four vinyl variants .

Solo artist with winning streak

Swift started 2024 beating the King of Rock and Roll for the solo artist with the most weeks spent on top of the  Billboard 200 albums chart .

"1989 (Taylor's Version)" maintained a stronghold at number one, as the Mastermind Queen surpassed Elvis Presley's 67-week record with 68 weeks,  Billboard announced on New Year's Eve . With "The Tortured Poets Department" Swift now has 70 weeks at No. 1. Only The Beatles have more with 132 weeks.

Takeaways from this week’s reports on the deadly 2023 Maui fire that destroyed Lahaina

A new report released by the Hawaii Attorney General’s Office shows that an emergency manager delayed his return, communications broke down and forecasts weren’t heeded during the Maui wildfire that became the deadliest in U.S. history. Attorney General Anne Lopez said this phase of the report is not to place blame on anyone. (Apr. 17)

HONOLULU (AP) — More than half a year after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in more than a century burned through a historic Maui town, officials are still trying to determine exactly what went wrong and how to prevent similar catastrophes in the future. But two reports released this week are filling in some of the blanks.

The most recent is a detailed timeline of the fire that tore through the heart of Lahaina on Aug. 8, 2023, killing 101 people . Released Wednesday by Hawaii Attorney General Anne Lopez, it is the first phase of a three-part comprehensive investigation being conducted by the Fire Safety Research Institute , or FSRI, with more coming in the next several months.

The previous day, the Maui Fire Department put out an after-action report produced by the Western Fire Chiefs Association. It detailed the challenges the department faced, as well as more than 100 recommendations for improvements.

Here are the key takeaways from the reports:

COMMUNICATION WAS A STRUGGLE AMID THE CHAOS

A major windstorm was toppling power lines and utility poles throughout Lahaina, and the first fire of the day sparked when a live power line snapped and hit dry brush. But firefighters and police received mixed messages about whether Hawaiian Electric had de-energized the lines, according to the FSRI report.

In the early afternoon — before the initial fire flared back up and began overtaking the town — a utility worker told fire crews that he could not confirm if the lines were de-energized. It wasn’t until after homes began catching fire that dispatchers reached Hawaiian Electric and got confirmation that the power was out.

The report also described a communications breakdown between police, firefighters and other emergency officials. Cellular networks were down, and the police and fire agencies used separate channels that public officials and others couldn’t listen to. Overwhelmed dispatchers had single operators trying to monitor as many as five or six channels at once.

Residents and tourists had no way to get emergency alerts or communicate with loved ones, and 911 operators were inundated with calls. One of the operators was off-island and wasn’t getting geographical location information with calls, and thus didn’t know where to send people fleeing the flames.

Meanwhile the head of the Maui Emergency Management Agency, Herman Andaya, was off-island at a work conference and getting regular text messages and calls from staffers about the rapidly changing fires. After a series of evacuations in Lahaina, he asked his assistant if he should come home but was told that “it may look OK,” according to the report. A few hours later, after much of the town had burned, Andaya said he would come home the following morning.

An after-action report from police earlier this year also identified communication challenges and recommended that a high-ranking officer be placed in the island’s communication center during future emergencies.

THE FIRE WAS SWIFT AND UNRELENTING, AND ESCAPE ROUTES WERE FEW

Firefighters thought they had extinguished the morning blaze, which started near a part of town that is far from the ocean. But less than 40 minutes after they left the scene, the flames reerupted, quickly spreading from home to home in a nearby neighborhood.

Wind gusts that were still toppling power lines pushed embers and burning debris farther into Lahaina.

As firefighters and other emergency crews scrambled to evacuate houses and get people to safety, dark smoke dropped visibility to near-zero at times. Those roads that weren’t blocked by trees, utility poles or power lines became jammed with traffic that sometimes ground to a standstill.

But the time people had to escape would likely have been tight even if the roads were all clear: Within 90 minutes, spot fires were burning all the way to the ocean, according to the FSRI report, and spreading north and south.

Some people died in their cars. Others leaped into the ocean to escape the flames. Still others abandoned vehicles and fled on foot.

RESOURCES WERE SCATTERED AND STRETCHED THIN

Firefighters risked their lives again and again — packing survivors into fire trucks to get them to safety, physically carrying victims away from danger, and taking shelter behind their own disabled vehicles — according to Tuesday’s report.

Many of the department’s crews and engines were already deployed to fight other wildfires on a different part of the island when Lahaina began to burn. The back-up fire engines used in emergencies weren’t fully stocked with equipment, and valuable minutes were lost restocking them before they could be put into action.

The report also highlighted a lack of mutual aid agreements between Hawaii counties, which meant that there was no standard way to request help from neighboring islands. The agencies also lacked a plan for evacuating tourists and residents who did not speak English — and language barriers made it difficult for the firefighters to warn some people of the need to flee.

WHAT COMES NEXT?

FSRI investigators are still trying to get some records from the Maui Emergency Management Agency. Research program manager Derek Alkonis said Wednesday that they requested incident activity logs and other records from MEMA on multiple occasions but still had not received all the data.

Alkonis did not go into detail about what he called “a difficulty with gaining information” from the agency, but said the reason is “going to be analyzed in subsequent reports.”

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is working on a report about the origin and cause of the fire on behalf of the Maui Fire Department. That report is not yet complete but is expected to be released in the next few months.

Boone reported from Boise, Idaho; Keller from Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Lauer from Philadelphia. Christopher Weber in Los Angeles, Audrey McAvoy in Honolulu, Claire Rush in Portland, Oregon, Hallie Golden in Seattle, Anita Snow in Phoenix and Mark Thiessen in Anchorage, Alaska, contributed.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival has announced its all-star lineup of jurors to decide this year’s Palme d’Or.

As previously announced , “Barbie” director Greta Gerwig will serve as jury president . Fellow recent Oscar nominee Lily Gladstone is part of the jury, as well as writer/director J.A. Bayona, Eva Green, Omar Sy, Pierfrancisco Favino, director Kore-eda Hirokazu, screenwriter Nadine Labaki, and screenwriter and photographer Ebru Ceylan.

New films from Paolo Sorrentino (“Parthenope”), Mohammad Rasoulof (“The Seed of the Sacred Fig”), Karim Aïnouz (“Motel Destino”), and Andrea Arnold (“Bird”) are also debuting in competition.

The winners will be announced on Saturday, May 25 at the Closing Ceremony, broadcast live by France Télévisions in France and by Brut internationally.

“Star Wars” creator George Lucas will be receiving an honorary Palme d’Or . Last year in 2023, Justine Triet’s Academy Award-winning feature “Anatomy of a Fall” took home the top title of Palme d’Or, as awarded by Ruben Östlund’s jury.

The Un Certain Regard jury, which has yet to be announced, will have Canadian filmmaker Xavier Dolan as jury president . Dolan’s Cannes accolades include “Laurence Anyways” in Un Certain Regard and “Mommy,” which was Dolan’s first feature in competition. “Mommy” tied with Jean-Luc Godard’s “Goodbye to Language” to win the Jury Prize. Dolan later joined the jury chaired by the Coen brothers at the 68th Festival de Cannes. Dolan debuted “It’s Only the End of the World” at the festival the following year, and “Matthias & Maxime” premiered in competition in 2019.

The Cannes staple filmmaker previously hinted at possible retirement in a 2022 interview with  Le Journal de Montreal .
