  • Upon your arrival at Bagdogra Airport, you will be warmly greeted by our driver. From there, we will proceed to Jaigaon. After reaching Bhutan's border town, Phuentsholing, our representative will assist you with immigration formalities and check-in at the hotel. Phuentsholing is a bustling commercial center located on the northern edge of the Indian plains, at the foot of the
  • Himalayas. It's a place where Indian and Bhutanese cultures blend harmoniously, showcasing a unique fusion of traditions.
  • If time allows, in the evening, we'll visit Zangtho Pelri, a small temple situated in the city center, symbolizing Guru Rimpoche's heavenly abode.
  • Overnight stay at the hotel in Phuentsholing. (Altitude 300m) Meals: Dinner included

Day 2 - Phuentsholing - Thimphu (165 kms)

  • After breakfast, our Road Captain will provide you with an orientation on bike riding, including traffic rules and do's and don'ts. Following the briefing, we'll embark on an exciting journey along the Phuentsholing – Thimphu highway, which was constructed in 1961, boosting economic ties between India and Bhutan. Along the way, we'll make a stop at Gedu University for photo opportunities. After a brief tea break at a highway restaurant near Chukha, we'll continue our journey.
  • After capturing some beautiful photos, we'll head towards Thimphu. Upon arrival in Thimphu, the capital city of Bhutan and the heart of government, religion, and commerce, you'll check into the hotel. Thimphu is a unique city where modern development coexists with ancient traditions. With a population of approximately 100,000, it is one of the world's few capital cities without traffic lights.
  • We'll visit Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang), home to one of the largest Buddha statues in Bhutan, standing at 169 feet (51.5m), crafted from bronze and gilded in gold. This location also offers a stunning panoramic view of the Thimphu valley. Later, we'll drive to upper Motithang in Thimphu to explore the Takin Preserve, where you can see the national animal of Bhutan, the Takin.
  • Overnight stay at the hotel in Thimphu. (Altitude 2,320m) Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 3 - Thimphu - Punakha & Wangdue (75 kms)

  • After breakfast, we'll drive up to Dochu-la pass (3,088m/10,130 ft), making a brief stop to enjoy the breathtaking view and appreciate the chorten, mani wall, and prayer flags adorning the highest point on the road. On a clear day, you can catch sight of several prominent peaks, including Masagang, Tsendagang, Terigang, Jejegangphugang, Kangphugang, Zongphugang, and Gangkar Puensum, the highest peak in Bhutan at 7,497m.
  • In the afternoon, we'll visit Punakha Dzong, also known as the "Palace of Great Happiness." Built in 1637 at the confluence of the Phochu and Mochu rivers by Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, this majestic dzong served as both a religious and administrative center in the past. It boasts a six-story, gold-domed tower and houses courtyards and religious statuary, providing a glimpse into the rich history and spiritual traditions of Bhutan.
  • After exploring Punakha's city center, we'll take a short walk to Chimi Lhakhang, a monastery located on a ridge surrounded by picturesque paddy fields. Popularly known as the "Fertility Temple," it is associated with Lama Drukpa Kuenley, also known as the "Divine Madman."
  • Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 4 - Punakha - Paro (135 km)

  • After breakfast, we'll drive back to Paro, descending from Dochu La and following the Wang Chhu and Paro Chhu river valleys. Along the way, we'll visit Simtokha Dzong, the country's oldest fortress, built in 1629 by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyel. The name "Simtokha" translates to "Atop a Demon," and legend has it that the dzong was constructed to subdue an evil spirit troubling travelers in the region.
  • Upon reaching Paro, we'll check into the hotel and then head to Ta Dzong, originally a watchtower and now the National Museum. The museum houses a vast collection of antique thangkha paintings, textiles, weapons, armor, household items, and a diverse array of natural and historical artifacts.
  • We'll also take a stroll to Rinpung Dzong, meaning "fortress of the heap of jewels." The dzong has a fascinating history, and its wooden galleries feature exquisite wall paintings that depict Buddhist stories and cosmic Mandala.
  • In the evening, you can explore the local market in Paro.
  • Overnight stay at the hotel in Paro. (Altitude 2,280m) Meals: Breakfast & Dinner included

Day 5 - Paro - Tiger's Nest Monastery Hike (6-7 Hrs)

  • After an early breakfast, we'll embark on a hike to the site of Taktsang Monastery, commonly known as the "Tiger's Nest." This sacred monastery, tragically damaged in a 1998 fire but subsequently rebuilt, clings to a sheer cliff around 2,000ft/600m above the valley. It is believed to be the place where Guru Padmasambhava, an Indian saint, flew on the back of a tiger to defeat five demons who opposed the spread of Buddhism in Bhutan.
  • The hike takes approximately 1.5 hours to reach the teahouse, from where you can choose to continue uphill to the monastery for another hour. Lunch will be served at the teahouse, offering stunning views of Taktsang and the Paro valley below. The return trek downhill will take slightly less time than the ascent. In the evening, you can take a leisurely stroll around Paro town.

Day 6 - Paro - Chelela Pass - Phuentsholing (210 Kms)

  • Following breakfast, we'll embark on a drive to Chelela Pass, one of the highest motorable passes in Bhutan, situated at an altitude of 3,988 meters. The drive to the pass takes about an hour through a dense forested road. Chelela Pass offers spectacular views of the sacred mountains, Jumolhari and Jichu Drake, along with hundreds of prayer flags fluttering in the wind.
  • After capturing memorable photos, we'll drive back to Phuentsholing, Bhutan's border town. This thriving commercial hub is located on the northern edge of the Indian plains, nestled at the foothills of the Himalayas. You'll check into a hotel in Phuentsholing.

Day 7 - Phuentsholing to Bagdogra Airport (Drop)

  • After breakfast, we'll conclude your Bhutan trip and provide transportation to the Indo-Bhutan border in Phuentsholing for immigration formalities. From the border, you'll be transferred to Bagdogra Airport for your onward journey, using an Indian vehicle.
  • Meals: Breakfast included

  • Solo Bike Trip To Bhutan: A Journey Of A Lifetime That Helped Me Overcome Depression!

27 Mar 2023

Tariq shares a thrilling account of his solo bike trip to Bhutan and tells us how his almost 5000 KM journey helped him overcome depression and other challenges. His little adventures will make you believe that sometimes a road trip is all you need to bring back the zeal in life.

My name is Tariq Shakeel, 28 now, I am into finance and accounting and a freelance tutor, who is chasing his passion and turning out to be a full time traveler. When I started traveling, I had no idea what ‘traveling’ really is.

I grew up amidst nature but it soon drifted away, I wanted it back!

Being born and raised up in a suburban family, I had many opportunities to stay in close proximity with nature, forests, hills, and rivers. However, after moving into cities, all of this was gone and I started longing for this close contact with nature, which pushed me to visit new places in search of peace and belonging.

bhutan bike trip

Thankfully, I had my bike with me which not only gave me freedom to roam but also think and explore. It gave me an opportunity to reach out to remote places and connect with new people, traditions, and customs.

Travel for me is..

Nirvana lodge stay in paro

For me, travelling is all about seeing new things, getting new impressions, and having different experiences. Unlike popular belief, it is not about escaping from our daily grind and the thousands of small and big obligations that life brings with it. It is about removing the veil that lies between nature and us and finding out that how nature is always pure, mysterious and giving.

Traveling very often means, putting up with way less than we are used to, staying in rooms that might not live up to our usual standards, waiting for bus, trains or airplanes to arrive or depart, enduring annoying security procedures, dealing with unknown languages and undecipherable street signs, eating things our stomachs are not cut out for and subjecting ourselves to different time rhythms and zones. But for me, traveling is all about photography and experiences since photographs are the best memories I can create.

My past experiences with traveling and how has things changed since then!

thimphu gate in bhutan

I have been traveling since my school days and even since then, it has always been as important as my studies. I remember going on vacations with my parents and going on adventurous school trips with school mates. I remember learning skiing when I was in 9th standard.

But now, I travel for travel’s sake. The great affair is to move. Travelling is more than the seeing of sights; it is a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living. To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travelling was to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar that it is taken for granted.

Every new place contributes something new in my life. Talking about my favorite experiences, From Trekking in Himalayas to Spending sleepless nights at the frozen Chadar River trek where the temperature dips to -35 Degrees, to riding through some of the highest motorable passes and villages, to riding on the mighty Sach pass and India’s most dangerous road of Killar – Kishtwar, every thing is memorable and special for me.

Solo bike trip to Bhutan, a ride that helped me overcome depression!

Chele le pass bhutan

There are wounds that never show on the body but are deeper and more hurtful than anything that bleeds. This is called ‘depression’.

Depression is a disease, just like any other. You hear? People can give you support. But you have to treat yourself. This is what I was told by my counselor. And I was put on medicines.

I was shattered by the cruel phases of my life and didn’t have any idea how to collect those shattered pieces and move on. A depressed person doesn’t have control over their thoughts. Depression makes it very difficult to do anything; to take any action. While I was suffering from it, all I felt like doing was to lock myself in my room and stay in bed for days. I know it will just take me 5 minutes to eat my food or to take a bath or just to wash my face. But I remember, I didn’t move. But then they say, the best part of being sad is that you learn something.

And one beautiful morning, I decided to ride again. I mustered enough Courage to say to myself that you are way worthy of all the beautiful things that nature is holding in her.

Mount Jomolahri in bhutan

Every depressed person has his or her own story of combating depression. So the same thing may work for few but not for others. My story is something weird. I decided to fight against it by doing what I am good at. Ride. A ride for my life Nature is pure, mysterious and always giving. And so was I. Time and again people have shown their nasty and selfish side to nature but it always gives back the pleasure and the beauty of being with it. I decided to find my solace by motor biking to world’s happiest country Kingdom Of Bhutan

For my part, I traveled not to go anywhere, but to go. I travelled for travel’s sake. The great affair was to move. Travelling was more than the seeing of sights; it was a change that goes on, deep and permanent, in the ideas of living. To my mind, the greatest reward and luxury of travelling was to be able to experience everyday things as if for the first time, to be in a position in which almost nothing is so familiar that it is taken for granted.

My initial plan was to start from Delhi and cross Lucknow via the longest expressway Agra – Lucknow expressway of whopping 550 kms. Next day reach Silliguri via Muzaffarpur and cross the Indo-Bhutan border and enter Bhutan via Phuntsholing. Then Cruise across Bhutan starting from West Bhutan and going towards East Bhutan.

face mask dance in bhutan

The route plan was Delhi- Lucknow – Silliguri – Phuntsholing – Thimphu – Haa – Chelela pass – Paro – Tigers nest – Thimphu – Dochula pass – Punakha – Chimi Lhakhang – Phobjikha – Gangtey – Trongsa – Chumhi – Jakar – Tang valley – Ura Valley – Jakar – Trongsa – Tingtibbi – Gelephu (border city) – Silliguri – Lucknow – Delhi.

Bhutan is a purely mountainous country. Nested in the Himalayas, more than 60% of its area is still forest covered. It’s a land of history, mystery, and culture. I can relate myself to nature very well.

Travelling on my bike on Bhutan’s road was so unpredictable that on an average it had 10 turns per kilometer. Altitude changes frequently between 2000 to 4000 Meters. From Roads to no roads, rains mud slush winds… nothing could deter me. Riding in the scorching heat of 45 degrees of four states namely New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and West Bengal, I reached the Kingdom of Bhutan and took shelter in the lap of Mighty Himalayas. I never visited clubs in my life, but after dancing to the beats of a local club in Trongsa I realized that people don’t have time to judge or notice you.

Travel is the biggest teacher after life!

budha point in bhutan

Roaming aimlessly in the plains of Bumthang valley made me realize that sometimes all you need to do is being “aimless”. A typical traditional homestay in Phobjikha taught me how to communicate without words. We all can easily understand one universal language, ‘language of Love’.

I had never eaten these many chilies and cheese in my entire life than in those 14 days. It convinced me to think that we should stop finding reasons from everything in life; we don’t have control over it. Staring at the majestic Jomolhari peak to highest unclimbed mountain Gangkhar Puensum, I realized no problem is as big as it seems. After visiting Phallus village and watching Mask face dance, I realized that our perception of the world is still wrong. We think that we know this world very well, but we know just an inch about it. The world exists and functions beyond our thinking and perception.

From kids playing football to men’s playing archery, from Riding on the windy Chelela pass to the mesmerizing Dochula pass, and from trekking to misty Tiger’s Nest to beautiful Dzongs of Punakha and Paro, everything was so fresh and full of energy as if they were scolding and shouting at me for hiding myself away from them and at the same time with the warmth they were trying to tell me that no matter what happens, no matter how you end up in your life, you can always turn towards us and we will never let you down.

While riding I could actually see the clouds flowing through me and sometimes below me as well. There were many times when I was compelled to stop my bike for hours and admire the pristine beauty of Bhutan. And I realized, world has so much more to offer, and it is really a nice place to be.

In the end, what did I gain?

trip to bhutan

This splendid 5000 km motorbike trip spread over 14 days changed everything for me. Every morning during my trip I had to get up and remind myself that look out, there are memories out there waiting for you to live. The way I used to look at myself and my life has taken a leap. I was going to change and I was going to change for good. A depressed person does not have control over their thoughts. Biking gave me that freedom and control. Freedom of thoughts… to explore.. to stay. To be the one.

Not all those who wander are lost may be true. But for me, I realized that all those who wander certainly find themselves. Riding on thousands of kilometers of tarmac, I had time to think about myself. When you are in depression your thoughts are like a pendulum oscillating between the two phases of life but when I was looking at the world through the visor of my helmet, the world seems so different. I was right there in the moment, for that moment everything just seem to matter and all my problems vanish in the thin air of kingdom of Bhutan. My Depression transformed into excitement and anxiety dissolved in the cool crystal clear waters of the numerous rivers and lakes.

homestay in bhutan

I was suffering from depression, and I am not ashamed about it. I am not ashamed about it just like any other person suffering from any other illness or disease. And I was not embarrassed to seek help, just like any other person seeking doctors’ help. One of the roadblocks to recovery for those who suffer from depression is our culture’s tendency to stigmatize depression and other mental health problems.

Depression was on its way out – happiness was on its way in!

monks with trumpets in bhutan

I believe that the stigma surrounding depression arises from living in a culture where feelings of vulnerability are considered weak and unacceptable. This is especially true for men who are raised with the injunction that “big boys don’t cry”—i.e., it is not okay for men to be vulnerable and show their feelings. In this sense, every one of us who has ever struggled with crippling depression or anxiety is a hero–and there certainly is no shame in that. Everyone is a fighter and a survivor of their own type. And so are you. Find yourself, be a Spartan.

This bike tour is back in the program in 2021, for 2020 please check our new Bhutan Intensive Motorcycle Tour ! If you want us to organize an individual and customized 11 day Bhutan Tour, we can do that for you any time ..

Bhutan highlights motorcycle tour – 11 day royal enfield bike tour of bhutan.

Only a few thousand visitors visit the mountain kingdom every year and the high price of admission is likely to keep it that way. USD 200.00 is the minimum daily expenditure for tourists in Bhutan, and individual travel without a guide is not permitted.

In return, visitors can marvel at the country’s spectacular, virtually untouched natural beauty.

Bhutan is a land of snow capped mountains, deep, broad valleys with fertile rice paddies and orchards, tiny villages and bustling market towns. Yet the south is covered in jungle and more reminiscent of India than the Himalayas. Bhutan is a thoroughly exotic country that stimulates all of the senses.

The previously-inaccessible biker’s paradise in the Himalayas is now within the reach of a dedicated few.

We bring our own fleet of 500cc Royal Enfield Bullet motorcycles to Bhutan, all featuring electric starters and gearshift on the left.

Our Bhutan highlights motorcycle tour begins in Calcutta – with a flight that touches down at Bhutan’s only airport in Paro, surrounded by Himalayan peaks at an altitude of 2,300 meters. Our adventure in the saddle can begin the same day.

Riding a motorcycle in Bhutan is different.

Straight roads hardly exist, and we’ve counted an average of 10 curves per kilometer. The roads are quite empty, and the capital city of Thimphu doesn’t even have a traffic light! Our motorcycle tour of Bhutan takes us along small mountain roads in varying conditions, and the ride never gets boring – beautiful landscapes soon cure us of the urge to ride hard. We kick back and savor the pure joy of cruising on our Bullet motorcycles at a relaxed 30 to 70 kph.

Our Bhutan bike tour is structured to allow enough time to get to know the countryside and the residents of the villages along the roads. We travel together with local friends who give us unique insights into their country and who share our love of biking.

The detailed route of the 11-day Bhutan Highlights Motorcycle Tour

Here is the current Bhutan motorcycle tour map

Bhutan motorcycle tour map

Day 1 Saturday: Flying independently from home to New Delhi.

Reach in the morning of Day 2 and spend some time in the transit section of the international airport.

Day 2 Sunday: Paro (Altitude 2,300 m)

Afternoon flight with DRUK AIRWAYS to Paro, transfer and time to relax at the hotel. The town itself is rather small, as most people live in the surrounding countryside, working the most fertile soil in the country. The road from the dzong to Paro is lined by very large chortens. The royal palace of Ugyen Pelri, built by Paro Penlop Tshering Panjor around 1930, is barely visible on the right. We’ll be spending the night in the old Gangtey Palace, one of Bhutan´s finest Heritage Resorts, cosy and rustic, with the option to enjoy the traditional Bhutanese “Hot Stone Bath” and the scenic Paro town and Dzong view from the bar and terrace.

Accommodations: Hotel Gangtey Palace Distance Travelled: 60 km

Day 3 Monday: Paro (Altitude 2,300 m)

Today we’ll take a short motorcycle tour of the Paro Valley in western Bhutan to the imposing ruins of the Drukgyel Dzong fortress monastery. The day will also include time for sightseeing and shopping in the town of Paro, a settlement that was not established until 1985. As is so often seen in Bhutan, there is no village near the dzong.

The houses along the main street are built in the traditional style and are painted with colorful patterns. The ground floors usually contain small shops typical of mountain villages that stock the basic essentials for the inhabitants. Alternatively, we can organize a memorable trek to the renowned Taktshang monastery (the “dragon’s nest”) – a Bhutanese national treasure with a stunning vista. (a 2-hour, 500-meter climb)

Accommodations: Hotel Gangtey Palace Distance Travelled: 150 km

Day 4 Tuesday: Thimphu (Altitude 2,600 m)

Today we’ll be doing a fantastic climb up to the Cheli La pass (3,990 m) on our motorcycles. This is Bhutan´s highest road ! We’ll then take the new main road into Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital city. (2,400 m, approx. 50,000 inhabitants) Our accommodations for the night are in a rustic and cosy , scenic located local Resort. A speciality dinner is lined up for us in the evening, followed by a little tour of the capital’s pubs, if you’re up to it.

Accommodations: Wangchuk Hotel Distance Travelled: 120 km

Day 5 Wednesday: Punaka (Altitude 1,600 m )

A short sightseeing tour in the morning and time to change money and shop – at 11:00 am it’s time for our next motorcycle ride through the mountains.

Just out of Thimphu, the road begins a steep, twisty climb to the Dochu La pass at 3,450 meters. The top of the pass is visibly marked by a large Bhutanese chorten and prayer flags. The road down from Dochu La into the Punakha Valley and on to Wangdi Phodrang goes on for some distance, descending 1,700 meters to the valley floor.

In Punaka, we’ll visit the largest and mightiest dzong in Bhutan and spend the night at the Singye Lodge (approx. 100 km). Via Dochu La (3,140 m) to Wangdue Tzong, then Punaka.

Accommodations: Y.T. Resort Distance Travelled: 100 km

Day 6 Thursday: Trongsa (Altitude 2,180 m)

We’ll then climb back up the winding Pele La pass (3,300 m),From there we’ll ride through the Black Mountains to the incomparable Phobjikha Valley – the winter habitat of Tibetan cranes and location of one of the largest fields of dwarf bamboo. We´l have lunch at a local guest house and then there is time for a short hike through medieval villages and to the dzong.

The long descent ends near the imposing Chendebi chorten, where we stop for a tea, coffee and a brief Photo shoot. After another hour of winding our way through the mountains on our bikes, we’ll catch our first glimpse of the dzong. Eight kilometers outside of Trongsa, the road takes a tight bend to the left around an outcrop and presents us with one of the most breathtaking vistas in Bhutan.

Dinner and Overnight in the cosy Yangkhil Resort, Campfire included.

Accommodations: Yangkhil Resort Distance Travelled: 120 km

Day 7 Friday: Bhumthang (Altitude 2,580 m)

After Breakfast we visit Trongsa dzong, a fortress built in 1648, sprawls down a steep hillside. Like nearly all towns in Bhutan, Trongsa is dominated by a dzong that dwarfs the surrounding buildings. Than we saddle the Bullets and we’ll cross the Yotong La pass (3,425 m) on our way into the picturesque Bhumthang Valley. En route, we’ll stop briefly to visit the Chumey Yathra weavers. (approx. 160 km, 6 hours in the saddle!)We’ll spend the night in the splendid Swiss Guest House Resort ( with attached beer Brewery ) in Jakar.

Accommodations: Swiss Guest House – Resort Distance Travelled: 90 km

Day 8 Saturday: Mongar (Altitude 2,200 m)

From Bhumthang, we’ll be heading east. Foreigners may be few and far between in western Bhutan, but virtually none make their way into the regions we’ll be seeing today. On the way to Mongar (1,800 m), we’ll be crossing the Tumsi La, on of Bhutan’s highest road passes. During the motorcycle ride, we can observe the changes in the beautiful surrounding vegetation as we climb through the various climate zones. But first, we’ll visit Ura, a village that is not typical for Bhutan. The houses are all built very close to one another, all facing in the same direction. (approx. 140 km). Overnight in the stylish Wangchuk Hotel in Mongar.

Accommodations: Wangchuk Hotel Distance Travelled: 180 km

Day 9 Sunday: Tashigang (Altitude 2,300 m)

Today we’re going to cruise on our bikes to Tashigang via Drametsi. We’ll cross the Korila pass (2,490 m) and wind our way through refreshing evergreen forests in the Yadi Loops. From the hot Kanglung Chu valley, we’ll ride up to the quiet little mountain town of Tashigang (approx. 150 km).

Our romantic hotel is is built like a small fortress and has more atmosphere than actual creature comforts, but we’ll hardly miss them considering the spectacular views. Accommodations in Hotel Druk or Doethjung Resort

Accommodations: Hotel Druk or Doethjung Resort. Distance Travelled: 120 km

Day 10 Monday: Samdrup Jongkhar (Altitude 600m)

Today we’ll tackle the last leg of the Bhutan Motorcycle Tour, from Tashigang to Samdrup Jonghar. 30 km into the day, we’ll reach Bhutan’s only university in Kanglung. Later, in Khaling, we’ll visit weavers, practitioners of a craft that’s very popular here in eastern Bhutan.

For the rest of the ride, we’ll once again experience Bhutan as a true paradise for bikers, with endless winding roads through the mountains. We’ll enjoy the view during our picnic lunch, then slowly descend to Samdrup Jongkhar, a town on the border to the Indian state of Assam, at an altitude of only 200 meters. And that’s the end of the bike tour! Dinner will be served at Hotel T.L.T., a basic place, but the best one in town.

Accommodations: Hotel T.N.T. Distance Travelled: 180 km

Day 11 Tuesday: Coach Transfer to Guwahati – Flight to New Delhi (Altitude )

Keep your itinerary ready, otherwise travelling visa will not be sanctioned. Get in touch with any tour operator to get the permits beforehand.  A free-of-cost travel permit is given in Phuentsholing for an Indian national although, for a vehicle, you need to pay a reasonable amount to get car permit sanctioned by Road safety And Transport Authority. Turn up before 9:00 AM (Bhutanese time).  Carry ID proof (voter ID card, PAN card, driving license etc.) with a passport (valid for six months minimum), insurance paper in case you are driving your car, pollution certificate of the vehicle and RTO book.  The travel permit is only applicable for visiting Paro and Thimphu for seven days. For other destinations like Phobjikha and Bumthang , you have to get a separate license from RSTA in Thimphu.     Non-Indians need a visa and also an exit stamp on their passports from Indian Immigration Office.  After disembarking at Jaigaon main stop, get your luggage and get down at the Immigration Office. After completing the formalities, you can reach the Bhutan Gate on foot as it is close by.

According to Google Maps, the distance between Kolkata to Leh, Ladakh is a whooping 2535.6 km. Covering this distance on a bike is no mean feat. There are a lot of things that need to be considered before you start for the epic Ladakh bike trip. We have tried to answer most of the questions that we usually get by our readers.

Kolkata to Ladakh Bike Trip Map

The Ladakh Bike Trip itinerary details are covered first and then the important tips for doing a safe bike trip to Ladakh.

Magnetic Hill Ladakh on Sinagar Leh Highway

Start from Kolkata quite early, may be, at 4 AM in the morning so that you can cover as much distance possible. You will reach Varanasi by evening.

Again start quite early to cover as much distance as possible. There are always chances of mishaps on roads. So starting early always benefits. This will be a long day on the road. So after reaching Delhi, just check-in to your accommodation and crash for the night.

The distance is lesser than the previous day, but time will almost be the same.

Jammu to Srinagar passes through the beautiful landscape. Enjoy the vistas as you ride your way to Srinagar.

This is a comparatively shorter day. A stop at Kargil is recommended as it helps in acclimatization. The place is beautiful in itself and deserves a day to explore. On the way, you can stop for sometime at Drass.

The way from Kargil to Leh is simply awesome. Ride slowly, totally enjoying the road, the landscape and everything. On the way you can stop at Mulbekh, Lamayuru Monastery, Likir and Alchi Monastery. Depending on your time, you can also stop the Magnetic Hill and Sangam point at Nimmoo to take some photographs. You will probably reach Leh by late afternoon.

This is the day to relax a bit and acclimatize. Get your permits done and visit Shanti Stupa, Leh Palace and the local markets. If you want, you can stay one more day in Leh.

Start early and rode towards Nubra Valley, crossing Khardung La Pass on the way. The road near Khardung La is a bit rough and has steep ascent. So if needed, stop on the way and then ride. You should stop at Khardung La Pass and enjoy the beauty there. Have tea and pakora at the army canteen, take some photographs. Once you are near Nubra Valley, the roads are one of the best. Just imagine riding down the black road with mountains on one side and the sand dunes on the other! It will be the ultimate experience. You can stay at Hunder or Diskit for the night.

Places to visit at Nubra Valley: Diskit Monastery, Maitreya Buddha Statue, Camel safari at Hunder, Turtuk.

If you wish to visit Turtuk, one more day is required at Nubra Valley.

Nubra Valley on Ladakh bike trip

This is one of the alternative routes to Pangong from Nubra Valley when you do not have to return to Leh. But the road conditions from Shyok village to Pangong Tso has some bad stretches. Also, the Shyok River often overflows the road. This route has almost no civilization and so getting help during any mishap becomes difficult. It is better to inquire about the road conditions before starting on this route. Also, you have to start really early, at around 5 AM, so that you do not face the overflowing Shyok River. Stay at a homestay near the Pangong Lake.

Get your tank filled from Diskit and carry extra petrol.

Day 10: Pangong –Chusul – Mahe – Tso Moriri (301 km, 9 hours)

bikes at the side of Pangong Tso

Start early as you have to go a long way. This route is not in the best conditions and traffic is also very very few. The advantage of this route is that you can go to Tso Moriri without having to get back at Leh. This saves a day. Bust as we said before, the route is deserted. Be sure your bike is in good condition and you have the repair kit handy. Also, keep extra petrol. There are no petrol pumps on the route.

To travel in this route, you will need a separate permit.

Camping is not allowed at Tso Moriri Lake. You can stay at the homestays in Korzok village.

The route goes through Korzok and Chumthang to Leh. While return, you can stop at Hemis Monastery and Shey Palace.

Leh Manali Highway road conditions

The return starts by Leh Manali Highway. If you want, you can stay another day at Leh before starting this journey.

Leh Manali Highway has adventure written all over it. The rugged landscapes, the loops and bends all make for quite a thrilling journey. Stop at Sarchu for the night. If you want, you can ride further up to Jispa.

Start early so that you can reach Manali well within time. You will be needing the much required rest.

This is going to be a long day. If you have time, you can stop at Chandigarh.

Again covering as much distance as possible.

The final day of the journey and return home.

Some Important Tips for Ladakh Bike Trip

Now that you have decided to go to Ladakh by bike (from Delhi, Kolkata or anywhere), here are a few tips that you should keep in mind.

Best Time to for Ladakh Bike trip

Ladakh is difficult terrain. During the winter months, the roads remain closed due to heavy snow. The ideal time to go for a bike trip to Ladakh is between June to September.

Best Bikes for Leh-Ladakh Bike Trip

Ladakh bike trip - on way to Pangong Lake

Earlier the only bike that came to mind while going for a Ladakh bike trip was Royal Enfield. The adventurous ones wanted the best bikes for the trip of their lifetime. But we have seen people going to Nubra Valley even on a scooty!

So the best bike depends on how comfortable you are riding the bike, what things you are carrying and whether anyone is riding pillion. Another very important thing is the condition of your bike. Here are a few factors that you need to consider while choosing your bike for Ladakh:

Age of the bike: The newer the bike, better the chance of its performing better on Ladakhi roads.

Pillion: If you are having some riding with you as pillion, then please take a bike with higher engine capacity. For a smaller engine bike, it will be difficult to navigate on the steep ascents.

Luggage: For a 500 cc bike, the luggage is not a concern, but if you are riding a 100cc or 125 cc bike, then travel light. More the luggage, more difficult will it be for both you and your bike.

Performance: You need to know your motorcycle well. You need to know how it performs at ascents or at difficult terrains. If you have any doubts, then get it fixed first. You need to have your bike in the best condition for your trip to Ladakh. Also, make sure that your bike does not have any worn out parts. Get it replaced if there are.

Get it Serviced: Get your bike serviced at least a week before the trip. Check all the cables, wires, gears, tires etc. After getting it serviced, ride it for some days to know whether it is performing to your expectation.

Having said these, we would recommend you to take the bike that you are comfortable riding and controlling. The bike is your companion throughout the journey and so you need to know it well.

Can I do the Ladakh Bike trip on a 100 cc bike or scooty?

The next question that comes is that whether doing this trip is possible on a scooty or a 100 cc bike. Yes, it is quite possible to do the trip, but there are some limitations and precautions that you have to understand.

There are challenges of doing the trip on a scooty or low power bike. The main challenge that you will face is the steep ascents. Khardung La, Chang La and Tanglang La have steep ascents for several kilometres. Secondly, the challenging road conditions make it difficult for riding on scooty. There are routes where you might have to cross rivulets or streams of water caused by the melting snow, which can be quite deep. Riding a scooty on such roads definitely is a big challenge due to low ground clearance.

At Ladakh, you might have to ride for long periods of time. If you ride your scooters or low power bikes continuously for a long time, there might be a problem of overheating.

Roads of Ladakh

Tips for doing Ladakh trip on a scooty or 100 cc bike

  • Know the limitations of your bike or scooty. These vehicles will gasp for power on the high mountain passes and the difficult roads. The 100 cc bikes and scooty can be quite slow at certain times. In such cases ride slow and do not overexert your bike engine.
  • Do not try to speed with other bikes. Go slow and enjoy the vistas. You have come to enjoy the adventure and not to compete with others.
  • Avoid low gear ride so as not to overheat the engines. At times when the road is extremely challenging and you have to ride in low gear, then take a break after every 30 minutes. This will let your engine cool down a bit. If your engine heats up, you may have to stop for some time, let it cool down and then continue your journey.
  • Service your scooty or bike before you start the trip.
  • Carry enough spare parts for your bike, so that you do not fall into trouble if your bike breaks down. Ensure to carry spare parts like clutch cable, accelerator cable, brake cables, spark plug, adhesives, coolant, spare headlight bulbs, puncture repair kits etc. This holds true for other bikes as well.
  • Travel as light as possible
  • Do not ride with pillion on your scooty or 100 cc bike.
  • Start early. As the day passes, the streams get swollen and it will be difficult to cross them with a low power bike.

How to carry your bike on train?

If you do not want to ride from your home town, you can send your bike on the train to New Delhi or Jammu. You can send your bike as luggage or parcel in trains. You would need the original documents and copies of your driving license, ID proof and bike documents like R/C, Pollution Certificate, Insurance copies etc. Go to the Railway Station Parcel Office and get it done. You have to pay a charge for carrying the bike on the train.

You may read this article to know more about the procedure to carry your bike on the train.

NOT RIDING A BIKE? CHECK OUT OUR MOST COMMON ITINERARY OF LADAKH !

Renting a bike or self-owned bike for Ladakh trip

A self-owned bike or motorcycle is always better because it will be better maintained and perform better over a rental bike. In your entire trip, the motorcycle will be your constant companion. So you need to know it in and out for a good trip. If you do not mind riding from your hometown, or the additional cost and hassle of transporting your bike, then self-owned bike is the best option.

If you do not want to take your own bike, then there are plenty of bike rental agencies in Leh. You can also rent bikes from Srinagar or Manali.

Bike rentals in Ladakh

If you do not wish to take your on bike, then you will get bike rentals in Leh. There are many shops and travel agents in Leh from where you can get motorcycles on rent. You can even inquire at your hotel and they will guide you accordingly.

The cost of bike rental ranges from INR 1000 to INR 2000 (RE Himalayan) per day. The cost of the bike depends on the model, make and the condition of the bike. You also might have to pay a security deposit for renting the bike.

Before you rent a bike, check its condition and take a test ride.

Can a motorcycle rented outside be used in Ladakh?

No, you cannot use a motorcycle rented outside (like in Srinagar or Manali) inside Ladakh. You can only take it as far as Leh by the Srinagar Leh Highway and Manali Leh Highway. For riding around in Ladakh, you have to rent a bike from Leh city. The rule is the same for bikes rented from Delhi also.

Kolkata to Ladakh Bike Trip

Petrol Pumps on the route

This is another important factor for a bike trip or any road trips, especially in Ladakh. Petrol pumps are few in the region. So if you spot a petrol pump in the region, get your tanks filled. Also, carry extra fuel with you in jerrycans.

The 474 km long stretch of Manali Leh Highway has a couple of petrol pumps. Manali has a petrol pump. Then after crossing the Rohtang Pass, Tandi village has another pump, 10 km before Keylong. The next petrol pump is 365 km away at Karu just before Leh.

You can also get fuels at the Dhaba tents at Sarchu and Pang. But they will be costlier.

Unlike Manali Leh Highway, Srinagar Leh Highway has more options. After Srinagar, there are petrol pumps at Ganderbal, Sonmarg, Kargil and Khalsi. Khalsi is about 95 km from Leh town. There is no need to carry extra petrol in this route.

There is one petrol pump at Nubra Valley in Diskit Village.

There are no petrol pumps near Pangong Tso. Karu Petrol pump near Leh town is the nearest one. It is about 130 odd km from Pangong Tso. You will, however, get black fuel at Spangmik and Chushul village,

There are no petrol pumps at Tso Moriri or the nearby villages. Here also, Karu, 200 km away is the nearest one. You will get black fuel at Nyoma and Chumthang village.

There are no petrol pumps near Hanle as well . You have to carry extra fuel if you wish to travel to these places.

What to pack for a bike trip to Ladakh?

A bike trip to Ladakh needs some thoughtful packing. You have to carry your luggage on your bike. So you need to pack light and smart. Here are a few essential things that you need to pack for your Ladakh Bike Trip.

what to pack for a bike trip in Ladakh

Story of a Bike Trip from Kolkata to Ladakh

Now that you have got information about the trip, here is a first-hand account of a biking enthusiast who had done the Ladakh Bike Trip from Kolkata. Sujay is from Kolkata working as Asst. Professor of Mathematics in a Kolkata college. He is extremely fond of his bike and loves to travel to various places in his bike. He is a dear friend and very graciously agreed to answer a few of our questions.

Ladakh Bike Trip

Q1. What made you go for this epic Ladakh Bike trip?

A: Whenever I hear the word Ladakh, only two things come to my mind. The unending beautiful landscape surrounded by the rustic hills and my bike roaring on the pitch black roads towards eternity. I think it is the dream of every biker to traverse the rugged terrains of Ladakh once in their lifetime, to cross the highest motorable pass at around 18000 ft is the adrenaline rush all the bikers want to feel.

Q2: Tell us about your journey.

A: I started from Jadavpur, Kolkata on September 24, 2017 on my Royal Enfield Thunderbird 350. I had packed every possible thing I could think of. I started at 2 AM in the morning as I wanted to cover as much distance as possible. My plan was to reach Kanpur on the first day. But my bike got a major breakdown at Aurangabad in Bihar and I lost 2 precious days. On Day 7, I started from Sonmarg towards the journey of my lifetime.

I crossed the treacherous Zojila Pass towards Kargil. I had wanted to see the Kargil War Memorial, but the roads were closed, as it was Muharram on that day. I took a bypass and reached Leh at 6 PM in the evening.

The next day, I roamed around Leh city taking in the beauty as much as I could. I got the required permits and visited the Shanti Stupa in the evening. The next day was crucial for me, as I was preparing to cross the Khardungla Pass, the highest motorable road in the world. I reached Khardungla at about 9:45 AM, spent some time there and then started my journey towards the Nubra Valley. Nubra Valley is a beauty in itself. I quite enjoyed riding my Enfield on the almost empty roads with the cold desert on either side. At Nubra, I visited the Distik Monastery and enjoyed some time at the sand dunes.

The next day, I started towards Pangong Lake through the Shyok Valley route. This route is one of the most beautiful routes of Ladakh. I would like to say here, that most of the tourists and bikers avoid this route. They are misinformed that this route is dangerous and has no shops on the way. But what I experienced is quite the contrary. I reached Spagmik at around 2 PM and cosied up in my tent. I could see the blue waters of the Pangong Lake through my tent. It was indeed a surreal experience to stay near Pangong Lake and see its changing colours.

It was freezing at night. I had wanted to take star trails, but the moon shone brightly thwarting my efforts. The cold too played a part in it!

That was almost the end of my Ladakh trip. Now was the time to return home safely. I started from Pangong the next day, reached Pang, then Pang to Manali and finally, after travelling through Noida and Allahabad, I was back at Kolkata on October 8, 2017.

Q3: How was your experience at the Ladakh bike trip?

A: It was the experience of a lifetime. Ladakh is indeed a beautiful place with all the mountains and valleys. My night at Pangong Lake was quite a memorable one. May be more so because I was leaving the next day. Added to the beauty of the place, was the thrill of riding the bike at such difficult terrains. I felt as if I conquered the world!

Q4: Did you face any problems on the road?

A: There were no problems as such. Only my bike broke down on the 1st day at Aurangabad in Bihar. I lost 2 days there. And when I reached Kargil, the roads were closed, as it was Muharram that day. I had to take a bye pass.

Nevertheless, the journey was quite successful without much difficulty. The people were friendly and helpful. And getting the permits at Ladakh was no hassle. You don’t have to go to any agencies.

Q5: Any suggestions or tips?

A: The road before you is endless. Just put your helmet on and take the ride of your lifetime. I am sure you will not regret it.

Get your bike serviced properly. Carry your preferred bike oil as you might not get it in Leh as they have limited stocks. Also keep your documents and papers in order. Plan the number of days you want to travel and the route map beforehand. Take proper clothes and biking gears with you.

Spend a day at Pangong Lake. It is worth all the travel. You may also take the road from Nubra Valley to Pangong via Shyok. The roads are okay.

But if you are not travelling with no group then please remain prepared all the time. As in, if you have minor trouble with your bike on road, then you must be ready to fix up the issue on your own. Thanks for the article Ladakh solo bike trip.

Hi, thanks for putting all of this information together. I’ll be riding a motorcycle through Ladakh, Leh in 2 weeks. This might sound ignorant on my part but I’m an American. I’ve read that parts of Kashmir are unsafe. I’ve never been to India. Should I worry about anything in this region? I only ask due to the recent travel advisories regarding safety in parts of Kashmir.

Hi TJ! Thanks for stopping by our blog. Well, you do not have to worry about Ladakh, because that place is absolutely safe. The recent developments pertain to the Kashmir Valley. So once you are in Ladakh, there will be no issues. How are you reaching Ladakh? If you have any specific queries, mail us at [email protected] . We will be happy to help.

I want to travel double on my bike. What problems or restrictions I might face. Is it ok to travel double? Can you suggest precautions for the same?

Amazing.. U captured all details.. And as always pics says it’s aloud

I do want to do this however won’t get so many leaves. Going to Ladakh on a bike is so exciting and going from Kolkata will be more exciting

Thanks Tanayesh. I think this is one trip that we should do together? 🙂

I have never been to Ladakh though it is one of the places that I have always wanted to visit. Travelling to Ladakh on a bike from Bengal must have been so adventurous. I loved the detailed itinerary you have shared along with useful tips especially the one about refueling at regular intervals. Ladakh truly is a paradise 🙂

We will visit Ladakh for sure!

Wow this is so awesome! I would love to do this some day. Thanks for sharing such a detailed itinerary.

Guys you are an example for many.. U give your 200% for traveling. A nice long read

Thanks Sapna!

Those pics are to die for. Plus such a detailed post. Kudos for that.

Thank you, Rahul!

Wow. That’s a fresh perspective on the Ladakh Bike trip. It ill sure inspire people from Kolkata to take this trip. I like the stop in Varanasi. It is such an exciting destination that one can stay here for 3 days itself. Riding all the way from Kolkata would be tiring but fun. I have always wanted to ride a bike in Ladakh but all my Ladakh trips have been on a cab. Someday for sure!

Thank you Abhinav! Sure, biking from Kolkata to Ladakh is tiring, but thats what the bikers are looking for! 🙂

Kolkata to Ladakh by road is sheer adventure and the way you did it , its incredible 🙂 amazing pictures

Thank you Pamela!

Kolkata to Ladakh road trip on a bike will really be 16 days of bliss. However I’m sure there are hardships and challenges that one could face on the road. Your well-narrated experience, and tips can really help those planning their road trip.

Thank you Seema. The bike trip is the ultimate adventure on road!

This post is a complete guide to travel journey which will really help! I have never been a travel freak so far but this post will help me out in my simple journeys!

Thank you Nitya! This is for all the bike lovers.

How much distance u traveled in this tour???

We have answered it in the article. Thank you!

Really very helpful facts and timing. I would like to know at what time of the day you completed the ride. Is it day time or night? And what do you suggest?

And also I would like to know the speed and Km you covered per pay at an average to complete the ride in 2 weeks.

Average speed was 80-90 kmph

I used to start at 7 AM and drive for almost 11-12 hours.

I really want to visit Ladakh by bike.

I agree with the fact that It is the dream of every biker to traverse the rugged terrains of Ladakh once in their lifetime, to cross the highest motorable pass, the adrenaline rush all the bikers want to feel. It’s good to know that your experience on a bike trip was so good. Thanks for your suggestion at the end of the blog. I really enjoyed reading and watching the video.

Thank you Vipul for liking the video and the post!

Exploring the Sikkim Silk Route on Motorbike

Photo of Sushant Panda

People who smoke get slides when they don't smoke for quite sometime....and something simalr happens with Riders when they are kept away from roads for long. It had been 6 months since I hadnt taken my Zeus (Bullet on a ride) and there was this inner calling which made me look for places around Kolkata and to my surprise there were not many.

Thats when my friend spoke about Zuluk Pass (59 hairpin bends) and Made me google about it. Trust me when I saw the first pic Google suggested me, I had made my mind and I knew my next ride had to be Zuluk.

Before I start talking about my ride lets understand what is the famous Sikkim Silk Route is all about.Old Silk Route or Silk Road which passes through East Sikkim is a part of the ancient network of trade routes which connected China to India . This route passed through Lhasa and Nathu La and Jelep La Pass and finally reached the port of Tamralipta (present Tamluk in West Bengal).

So after all the research we realised we can do the Sikkim Silk Rout starting at Siliguri and can End the ride at Gangtok via Zuluk.

The only pain in this plan I had, was to take my Bike to Siliguri. After my Bhutan experience I had no mood to ride from Kolkata to Siliguri. Finally three riders choose to join the ride from Siliguri. So we transferred our bike on Train to Siliguri and thats where we started our ride.

Things to remember while transferring bike to destination.

Best mode of transport is always Indian Railway. Get all ur documents ready (Bike registration, DL, Insurance, Pollution Check). Find an agent to do all the packing and documentation (it saves lot of time n hassles). Transfer the bike two day in advance so you receive the bike right on the day of ur ride. Get it properly packed at the station to avoid damages and unpleasant surprises.

Its essential to get your permit done before hand when you plan this trip. Permit is required to enter Sikkim, Cross Zuluk, Nathula, And Enter Gangtok. Preferable 05-06 copies of Permit + Permission from Sikkim Home Department. And Proper copies of the vehicle documents is essential.

Suggest to take help of an agent by sending documents before one week to get the permits done. So last minute running around is avoided.

Day-1: ( Siliguri to Reshi )- Via Kalimpong -- Pedong.

Took the delivery of bike from New Jalpaiguri station and got it checked before the ride. The Ride starts from Siliguri. You start climbing hills right after sevole more. The roads to Kalimpong goes right along bank of Teesta River and the first feel of a hill station is what you get when you reach Kalimpong through the curveous roads. Then you descend & climb many more hills till you reach Reshi. A beautiful town on the river bank. Stay at an eco resort. (Prior booking is advisable). Rest in the right at the river side resort. Rooms are as cheap as 700 per person. (includes Dinner & breakfast). Beautiful place to relax and enjoy serenity of the nature. Take cottages which are facing the river. A trek of 15-20 mins to reach Reshi Eco-resort while taking bamboo bridges and jungle pathways. We were escorted by a German Shepard till we reached the Resort. Rooms were basic but spaicious. Suggest to carry your own Towel & toiletries. Food is homely. You can sip your rum..breezer sitting right on the river bank & enjoy the sunset.

You don't need entry permit till Reshi.

Day-2: (Reshi to Gnathang )-- Via Rongli, Zuluk.

Lazy breakfast, exploring the river bank jungle, clicking pictures of birds, butterflies and landscapes did set the mood for the day.we packed our saddle bags, carried it back to river through the same routes we came from and bid farewell to Reshi. Loaded the bags on bike-- secured it with Bungee cords, covees it with polywraps to save it from Rain,we started our trip for Zuluk pass. First check point is right after 40 mins of ride from Reshi. Don't forget to show your pass and give a copy at the post.(Or else you may have to return back if you cross the gate without submitting a copy). The beauty of Hills starts right after Reshi. Roads are narrow and picturesque and you won't regret riding. Monsoon rain did make us stop at places but didn't kill our spirit because Zuluk was waiting for us. We rode through the misty clouded mountains. Roads were well maintained and ride was nothing but sheer pleasure.

Crossing Zuluk and taking 59 hairpin bends was the kick of the Day 02 ride and we reached a small town called Gnathang. Thambi View point was amazing from where you get the best view of Zuluk. We couldn't see the whole landscape of Zuluk along with all the hairpin bends due to clouds but still the view was breathtaking and my camera shutter didn't stop for 15-20mins. Book your homestay at Gnathang before you reach. We experienced the best hospitality of simple & homely people of hills who cooked maggi-- gave us hot coffee as many times as we asked with a smile-- made your room warm with room heaters and cooked amazing chicken.

Day-03: (Gnathang to Gangtok) Via-- Kupup , Nathula, Changu Lake.

We started as early as 6 am. Visited Thambi view point again. And then we were back to explore the route full of lakes, army bunkers, snow covered hills. It was day full of sight seeing. Every 02 kms you get to see a lake. Take prior guidance of Locals so you don't miss any. And what all we saw....is like a never ending list.

  • Thambi View Point
  • Tukla Valley
  • Jelepla Pass
  • Eagle’s Nest Bunker
  • Strawberry Lake
  • Lampokhari Lake
  • Laxman Chowk
  • OldBaba Mandir
  • New Baba Mandir
  • Menmecho Lake
  • Nathula Pass
  • Four Lake Point
  • Yak Golf Course (Golf course at World's Highest altitude of 13000ft)
  • Younghusband’s Track
  • Changu Lake

The ride after Changu Lake was bit difficult due to Land slides, heavy fog and increased traffic of tourist visiting Nathula from Gangtok. But our bikes cruised through all this till we reached Gangtok. Its a trip worth exploring on bike and not to mention a delight for photographers & explorers. Don't miss to see the Chinese Army Camps while crossing Kupup and reaching Nathula. Another border touched another pass conquered and we reach Siliguri back from Gangtok descending down. If you have time explore Monastries near Gangtok, Play Casino & enjoy the Karoke bar at the Mall road.
