Krabi To Koh Phi Phi: The Best & Easiest Way To Travel (2024)

Find out how to travel from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi. Whether you are looking to take a ferry or a speed boat. So, let’s find out prices, booking tickets, the best companies and more!

Southern Thailand is an absolute gem you must check out while you are exploring this impressive country. From the beautiful beaches to the lush tropical jungles, it’s really something else.

Koh Phi Phi is a tourist hotspot that must be on nearly every person’s Thailand itinerary. Made famous thanks to the nearby Maya Bay and is an absolute picturesque spot.

I visited Koh Phi Phi towards the end of my travels in Southern Thailand and it was different than all the other islands I had been to at that point.

This was a mecca for travelers who like to party and those who are in Thailand for a drunken good time. Honestly, it wasn’t what I was expecting, as I don’t really drink that much anymore.

Though we managed to make our own fun and because we were traveling in the wet season the rains usually appeared during the evenings anyway, so everyone retreated to their rooms.

But how exactly do you travel from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi? Obviously, being an island you will need to take some sort of boat service to get there. But which one is the fastest? Are there any unsafe ones and how do I go about booking tickets?

I will answer all this and more below in this guide for how to travel from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi.

How To Get From Krabi To Koh Phi Phi For An Easy Travel Day

🚗 How I Book Cheap Transport In Thailand: 12Go Asia

Krabi To Phi Phi Island Distance

Once your Krabi itinerary has come to an end and you are trying to figure out where to go next, why not choose Koh Phi Phi? They are relatively close together and thankfully it is relatively simple to work out the distance from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi.

This is because there is only one real route you can take to get there.

However depending on what type of boat you decide to book will affect how long this journey actually takes. For example, a speed boat is a lot quicker than a local ferry.

If you are short on time you can do a day tour to Koh Phi Phi, this is actually one of the best tours in Krabi and is super popular among travelers on a strict itinerary.

All in all the journey itself is roughly around 45 kilometers over the Andaman Sea . This is likely to take you somewhere between 30 minutes to 2 and a half hours depending on the type of boat you booked.

Also, be aware that if you are traveling during the wet season this trip may take longer again thanks to the ocean currents and waves being a lot more aggressive than during the dry season.

Just be aware in Thailand you can’t rely on things to run on time. Therefore you are best to give yourself an extra hour than stated on your ticket to complete this journey.

Ferry From Krabi To Phi Phi

Here is a breakdown of the ferry schedule from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi. However, be aware these can often change, especially in the dry season versus the wet season.

Make sure you check out 12.Go Asia for an updated list of current operations.

Krabi To Phi Phi Island Ferry

The easiest, simplest, and basically the only way to travel from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi is by booking a ferry.

Sure there are also speedboats.

Though the majority of travelers will book a ferry thanks to being a much more affordable option and that in reality, it doesn’t really take too much longer.

Just be aware that since this is the most popular option with travelers, the ferry boats can quickly get booked up in advance. It will be best to book your journey at least a couple of days out.

This can either be done with your accommodation in Krabi or online on websites such as 12.Go Asia .

If you book with your accommodation it will likely also include a transfer to the ferry port. Just make sure your ferry transfer actually picks you up on time.

Ours was 20 minutes late because they forgot about us. As a result, when the van finally arrived they then speed through Krabi town at 80+ kilometers per hour as we rushed to the port before the boat left.

We were told simply to run once we arrived in order to make the boat on time. The downside to this was all the seats inside the boat were taken so we had to sit out the front under the midday sun.

However, this is the downside of booking through your accommodation as you don’t really know what ferry company they’ve used. Usually, we thoroughly research our options before booking online. Remember things in Thailand are definitely more relaxed.

Either way, I recommend you do some research, especially regarding previous accidents on the boats. This is important as the ferries in Thailand have quite a reputation for questionable safety standards.

Whether this is not enough life jackets on board, or just venturing out in rough seas. I highly recommend reading reviews if you are worried about this.

Ferry Price From Krabi To Phi Phi

For the journey from Krabi to Phi Phi, you will find tickets starting around $14.00 . This is a pretty decent price, though just be aware you will likely be packed on board with numerous other travelers.

As I said above, I highly recommend booking your tickets in advance, rather than showing up at the pier on the day. This is especially so in the high season where it is pretty normal for the boats to get completely booked up.

The only exception to this would be if you are traveling in the monsoon season, also known as the low season. This is because you don’t have all those other travelers there competing for one seat, and secondly, you can make sure the weather is decent.

When it comes to actually booking a ferry, you can do so on the 12.Go Asia website from anywhere in the world. This means if you are on a strict itinerary you can book months in advance from the comfort of your own home.

Alternatively, you can book once you are in Krabi at one of the many travel agencies along the streets.

The majority of accommodation providers in Thailand are usually more than happy to organize ferry boats and buses for you. It may cost a couple of dollars more.

Though the majority of the time they will also include transfers to the pier which makes things a bit simpler for you.

How To Get To Phi Phi Island From Krabi By Speed Boat

Taking a speed boat will be a quicker option, though it will be a few dollars more expensive than taking the ferry.

I know the majority of backpackers generally take a ferry over a speedboat. However, this is because they aren’t fussed about how long it takes and will be wanting to save money.

If you are short on time then it would be well worth booking a speedboat from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi.

This can be done in advance on websites such as 12.Go Asia or if you would like to book once you are in Krabi you will just need to visit one of the numerous travel agencies.

Day Trip From Krabi To Koh Phi Phi

If you are short on time it is still well worth visiting Koh Phi Phi from Krabi in the form of a day trip. Luckily, these are pretty easy to organize thanks to both locations being popular tourist destinations.

Get Your Guide offers this exact day trip called Phi Phi Islands Full-Day Speedboat Trip from Krabi . This is a top choice with the entire day costing $50.00.

This tour takes you to Koh Phi Phi, but you will also be able to visit Railay Beach, Bamboo Island, Viking Cave, Pileh Lagoon, and Monkey Beach. Also, with lunch included this is a full day of snorkeling, swimming, and enjoying the island life under the Thai sun.

Getting From Koh Phi Phi Wharf To Your Accommodation

Koh Phi Phi is an island with no cars and minimal roads only built for motorbikes. This means getting to your accommodation isn’t always the easiest.

Luckily the majority of accommodation providers and located relatively close to the wharf. On top of this thankfully the island is pretty flat. Though you may find yourself sweating up the side of the occasional hill.

When you arrive you will see numerous hotel workers all holding up signs of different places with large metal carts sitting next to them.

You can put your baggage in these carts and they will take it to your hotel while you walk alongside. If you happen to be staying somewhere a bit more luxurious then this will likely be an option for you.

Things To Do In Koh Phi Phi

Koh Phi Phi isn’t just a party place, it also has some excellent things to do.

Whether you like a bit of exploration, life on the ocean, or simply just relaxing, there is something for everyone here.

Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint

No doubt one of the best things to do in Koh Phi Phi is to check out the viewpoint . I am sure at least once every traveler will hike their way up the hill to check out the view. Yes, it is as amazing as it looks in photos.

At the top, you will be asked to pay an entry fee of $1.00 / 30 THB. Though it is well and truly worth that small price. There is also a small bar at the top where you can buy drinks.

Visit Maya Bay

Maya Bay was made famous by the film The Beach, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Though throughout the years the number of travelers it attracted was not sustainable.

Litter was left everywhere, the reefs were destroyed, and as a result, the Thai government made the move to close it. Now it has reopened but you cannot swim to protect the marine life.

Keen to see if you may want to visit Maya Bay since it’s reopening. I recommend checking out this video by one of my favorite travel Youtubers, Paddy Doyle:

MAYA BAY on Koh Phi Phi is OPEN 🏝️ What Is It Like Now?

Drink Buckets

You can find tables set up in the main town full of buckets, each containing different ingredients depending on your liquor preference. They are also cheap, but be aware they are potent.

The best places to party here on Koh Phi Phi are Slinky Bar, Stockholm Syndrome, and The Apache Beach Bar.

There is also the popular Ibiza Pool Party held at Ibiza House. This happens every Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday with free entry from 1 pm to 9 pm.

Go Snorkeling

What better activity to do when you’re in a tropical paradise than snorkeling?

Koh Phi Phi is teeming with an assortment of underwater life. There will be so many fish to see and the waters are warm like a bath. That’s one of my favorite things about Southeast Asia.

For the best snorkeling, I recommend heading to Hat Yao.

This is a beach on the south coast of Phi Phi Don and just a 30-minute walk from Ton Sai. Once there you can spot clownfish and if you’re lucky you may even see a black-tipped reef shark!

pufferfish while snorkeling in koh phi phi

Kayaking To Monkey Beach

There are plenty of places offering rentals on both sides of the island. However, to visit Monkey Beach you will want to hire it from the Loh Dalum Beach Side.

The rental should cost you approximately $12.70 / 400 THB. You should be able to reach the beach within an hour where you can then enjoy meeting some new furry friends.

Island Hopping

Bamboo Island : Bamboo Island may not be as picturesque as Koh Phi Phi with the steep limestone cliffs. However, you can never go too wrong with a secluded sandy white beach. The waters are crystal clear so make sure to bring your snorkel mask for a spot of snorkeling!

Mosquito Island: As the name suggests, you may not be exactly alone while visiting Mosquito Island. Don’t be fooled by the name, the mosquito population should only be an issue if you are visiting during dusk. If you are coming for the day and the sun is out you will be fine.

Where To Stay In Koh Phi Phi?

Everything in Koh Phi Phi is relatively close together. There is the main town, Tonsai, where you arrive, and then all the accommodation is spread throughout here as well as up the hills.

I stayed in the cheapest “resort” I could find. Knowing I wouldn’t be partaking in the drunken parties I decided I would book a place with an infinity pool with an amazing view.

It ended up costing us around $25.00 per night, which split between the two of us that were traveling was a pretty good price at $12.50 per night.

However this place is no longer operating, and I think that may be a good thing. Reviews were seriously not good, and even though I had a pretty good time, it was obvious not everyone had this experience.

Also, it was the first and only time I saw a print-out list of the cost of literally EVERYTHING in the room and how much we’d be charged if we broke it. Fantastic.

In terms of accommodation in Koh Phi Phi, you can literally find everything here. From 5-star resorts to those squished dorm room hostels and locally run guesthouses.

However, what they all the in common is they will all be ridiculously overpriced.

Enjoying the beautiful Maya Bay in Krabi, Thailand

About the Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi Islands are the jewel of the Andaman Sea.

Scattered across the Gulf of Thailand, it’s made up of two main islands; Koh Phi Phi Leh and Koh Phi Phi Don, with other smaller islands dotted around, mostly uninhabited.

Koh Phi Phi Don is the largest island, and the only one with a small town on it. It has a very chill laid-back vibe, and it’s one of the main backpacker destinations for all travellers to Thailand.

Not far from Koh Phi Phi Don, you will find Koh Phi Phi Leh, a beautiful island that’s long enticed travellers, thanks to its gorgeous coral reefs, imposing limestone cliffs and the famous Maya Bay.

Even though they’re technically part of Krabi, most people visit Phi Phi as part of their  Phuket itinerary , as it’s fairly close.

Many travellers visit Phi Phi on a day trip, and if that’s your plan too, you’ve come to the right place!

How to get to Phi Phi Island

First of all, it’s not really possible to do the Phi Phi day trip independently. The only real way to do it is to hop on a tour, either from Phuket or Krabi, depending on where you’re staying.

How to get to Phi Phi Island from Phuket

The Phi Phi Island day tour from Phuket is mostly done by speedboat.

You’ll be picked up from your hotel and taken across the sea to various different sights around the Phi Phi Islands. Tours may include a buffet lunch, mask and snorkel, and the national park fee.

Technically speaking, from Phuket, there are also public ferries, which could make a Phi Phi island day tour (sort of) possible without joining a tour.

However, the ferry takes around two hours, but I would say that the ferry times are a little bit inconvenient if you’re just going for the day.

You can check ferry times here . When I visited Phi Phi, the ferries were leaving Phuket around 10AM, arriving in Phi Phi around 12PM. The latest ferry back from Koh Phi Phi Don was then around 3PM.

That doesn’t give you much time to explore these beautiful islands. It’s better to join a tour like this one , which has better timings, leaving earlier in the morning and coming back later in the afternoon.

I have linked below some of the best tours to Phi Phi Island from Phuket.

Phuket: Maya, Phi Phi, and Bamboo Island with Buffet Lunch : This is the classic Phi Phi Island day tour from Phuket. It includes a buffet lunch, a visit to Viking Cave and a snorkel at Bamboo Island.

How to get to Phi Phi Island from Krabi

Getting to the Phi Phi Islands from Krabi is the same as from Phuket. You can either take the ferry (which I don’t recommend for a day trip), or join a speedboat tour.

The ferries from Krabi take around 90 minutes to reach the Phi Phi islands along the 40-kilometre crossing.

Similarly to the ferries from Phuket, the timings aren’t convenient for a day trip, as they don’t leave you with much free time there.

Instead, check out one of these speedboat tours. These tours are one of the most popular ways to see the islands, ticking off all the main sights on a single full-day tour.

It involves being up bright and early at your accommodation in Krabi, before being taken to Railay Beach . From there you’ll hop on the speedboat and be whisked around the islands.

This sort of trip includes an English-speaking guide, lunch, and snorkel equipment.

Note that many tours from Krabi don’t include the entrance fee to the national park (400 THB), which must be paid at the entrance to the park in Koh Phi Phi Leh.

What does a Phi Phi Island day tour include?

Regardless of whether Phi Phi island tour sets off from Krabi or Phuket, they tend to include many similarities.

From the mode of transport (either a longtail boat or a speedboat) to the sights you’ll see along the way, it will basically be the same tour.

Therefore, don’t let the starting point of your day trip influence your Thailand itinerary , as you will visit all of the beautiful must-see sights of Phi Phi both if you visit from Krabi or from Phuket.

There are some differences however, as a Phi Phi island day trip cost can vary massively depending on the package. If you choose a private boat over a group tour, small group versus large tour, any extra stops and so on.

Mostly though, you’ll be whisked away to the following big-hitter destinations in this beautiful archipelago.

Visit Maya Bay

Pretty much every single Koh Phi Phi day trip will include a visit to Maya Bay . This iconic spot was made famous as a filming location in The Beach , the 2000 travel movie starring Leonardo diCaprio.

With a beach backed by soaring cliffs, you can easily see why the hidden cove has become fairly busy today. Maya Bay was actually closed for four years, to allow it to recover from the effects of over tourism.

Today, Maya Bay is open once again, but boats can no longer dock inside it and you’re not allowed to swim in the water. You can only get in up to knee-length water for pictures.

However, don’t let that deter you, as it’s still a truly stunning spot. Plus, you’ll be able to snorkel and swim in other stops of your Phi Phi Islands day trip.

The beach itself is a 100-metre-long stretch of white sandy beach, which is an idyllic place to lounge around for a while soaking up the surroundings.

Snorkel in Phi Leh Lagoon

After Maya Bay, most tours will head over to another of the area’s beautiful lagoons; Phi Leh Lagoon, also located on Koh Phi Phi Ley.

Cutting into the shape of the island on its eastern side, this 600-metre-long bay is an integral part of tours in the area and, well, it’s not hard to see why: it’s a stunner.

The lagoon is centred in front of a 100-metre-high limestone cliffs, while the water itself is emerald and translucent.

This makes for excellent conditions for snorkelling (it’s one of the best snorkelling and scuba diving spots in Thailand after all!), which is exactly what people do when the tour boats rock up here.

Explore Viking Cave

Viking Cave is around half an hour on the boat from Phi Leh Lagoon. It’s most famous as a collection point for the natural bounty that are swallow’s nests — the main ingredient for Chinese delicacy bird’s nest soup.

You’re not allowed up in the cave where the locals climb up to collect the nests, but you can see them ascending up the cliffs while you’re floating around in the boat below; the tour boat usually makes sure to slow down so you can glimpse the spectacle.

Interestingly the cave doesn’t get its name from Vikings, but instead from some 400-year-old graffiti of Chinese fishing junk.

See the monkeys at Monkey Beach

As the name suggests, this large beach is home to monkeys. You will se monkeys in the trees that line the beach, and they often come down to the sand as they know tourists often have food on them.

Other than the monkeys, which can be a little bit pesky if you’re not careful, it’s a beautiful spot framed by turquoise seas and verdant cliffs, with soft, silky sand to dig your toes into.

Here you can relax for a while, see the monkeys in this unique setting and go for a swim in the crystal clear waters of Monkey Bay.

Don’t leave your bags unattended, as the monkeys will open them to see if you have food inside!

Chill at Bamboo Island

Also called Koh Pai, Bamboo Island sits to the northeast of the Phi Phi archipelago.

It’s a tiny island (only 700 metres long), but size doesn’t matter: this heart-shaped island is absolutely beautiful, featuring a wide beach that slopes gently into the sparkling sea.

There’s not much here, only a coral reef out to sea and a small beach eatery, but who cares? It’s gorgeous.

Snorkelling is great here since the water is nice, warm and perfectly crystal clear (and also because of the coral, obviously).

Kayak to hidden coves and beaches

This isn’t an option on all Phi Phi island tours, but sometimes the bigger boats will bring kayaks with them.

This means you’ll get to kayak to little secret coves and hidden beaches when the boat drops anchor in one of more of the stunning locations I listed above.

From Krabi: Phi Phi Islands Speedboat Day Tour

This day trip is the same classic Phi Phi island tour as above, with the difference that it sets off from Krabi.

Like many, this is a Phi Phi island tour by speedboat and it will see you zipping across the sea on an adventure around the archipelago.

Highlights include swimming and snorkelling at Bamboo Island (it’s really stunning), passing by the interesting Viking Cave, swimming in Maya Bay, and snorkelling at Phi Leh Lagoon. It also includes lunch.

From Phi Phi: Full-Day Sunset Long Tail Boat Tour

This small group tour of the Phi Phi islands is a great option for anybody who feels like staying in the Phi Phi Islands overnight.

Unlike most tours, it’s done via a traditional longtail boat instead of a speedboat, and it makes eight stops along the way. You’ll also get to see the sunset on this tour, which is another bonus.

However it starts in Koh Phi Phi Don, not from the bigger Phuket or Maya Bay harbours. As such, it’s only suited for those who plan to take the ferry to Phi Phi, stay overnight and then join a boat tour the next day.

From Phuket Or Khao Lak: Phi Phi Islands Early Bird Tour

This early bird tour is a great option if you want to avoid the crowds in Maya Beach, possibly making it the best Phi Phi Island tour for anybody who wants to see pristine beaches without the other tourists.

You also get to climb to an amazing viewpoint on Phi Phi Don — and that’s before you’ve even stopped for breakfast!

There’s also a picnic lunch involved later on in the day, and plenty of time for swimming, snorkelling, and lounging around. Plus, the price of this Phi Phi islands tour makes it a good value for money.

Krabi: Phi Phi Sunrise & 4 Islands by Speedboat with Lunch

Also leaving early in the day to help you avoid crowds, this tour is an interesting option since it goes from Krabi and also includes the Krabi four islands tour.

That’s what makes it a bit different from the other Phi Phi tours, mainly because it includes some islands that you wouldn’t otherwise see on the main tours.

There’s also the bonus of a pretty decent Thai buffet at a hotel restaurant for lunch.

Is a Phi Phi island day trip worth it?

Yes and no… While it’s a beautiful archipelago — I mean, obviously it is — with some iconic and pretty unique sights like Maya Bay, it is also super busy and overly touristy.

There are other beautiful islands to visit in Thailand. Many, many more in fact (for example Koh Lipe , the Surin Islands or Similan Islands ) that are far less touristy than Phi Phi which you could visit.

But if you’re dead set on visiting Phi Phi island (I don’t blame you, it was a must on my travel bucket list too), I would recommend going there via ferry and trying to spend at least one night there.

This means you’ll be able to enjoy the chill town and see it after the daytrippers leave, and then for something special maybe go to Maya Bay for a super early bird tour and see it without the huge crowds.

I visited the Phi Phi Islands three times, once on a private boat tour from Krabi, and twice staying overnight. The two times I stayed overnight were much more enjoyable. If you do opt for a day trip, try a private tour if you can.

The Phi Phi Islands are very touristy, but there’s no denying they’re beautiful and definitely worth visiting. Just make sure you spend at least a night there, and see everything they have to offer, instead of just visiting on a day trip.

Where to stay for your Phi Phi day trip

For a Phi Phi Island day trip, you can either stay in Krabi or Phuket. Personally, I much preferred Krabi as it’s more laid-back than Phuket, and it’s also shorter boat trip to the Phi Phi archipelago.

I have listed below some of the best places to stay for every budget.

Budget: Railay Viewpoint Resort   – This budget option is great for those who want spacious rooms and a pool with view for an affordable price. It’s tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the main road of Railay Beach.

Click here to book your stay at Railay Viewpoint Resort!

Mid-range: Railay Princess Resort & Spa   – This is where we stayed for a week and really enjoyed it. The property is clean, the rooms spacious, it offers a lovely breakfast buffet, has a great pool with view and is in an easy position to reach close to East Railay Pier. What more could you need?

Click here to book your stay at Railay Princess Resort & Spa!

Luxury: Rayavadee   – If you want to treat yourself, this is the place to do so! Located in Phra Nang Beach (the only hotel there) this luxury property offers gorgeous private villas nestled in nature.

I didn’t personally love Phuket, but it’s one of the most popular beach destinations in Thailand for a reason.

If you’re planning lots of day trips in the Gulf of Thailand, you should stay on the Eastern side of Phuket, so you don’t have to drive as much within Phuket to get to the harbour and boat trips.

Here are some great places to stay in Phuket for every budget.

Budget: Bodega Phuket Party Hostel   – I haven’t stayed here personally, but if you’re in a party mood, I’ve heard this hostel is the place to be in Phuket.

Click here to book your stay in a hostel in Phuket!

Mid-range: The Crib Patong  – I stayed here on my second trip to Phuket. It’s a really cute boutique hotel that was close to the nightlife of Bangla Road, but just far enough that the noise wasn’t annoying at night.

Check the latest prices and availability at The Crib Patong here!

Luxury: Hilton Phuket Arcadia Resort & Spa, Karon Beach – I stayed here on my first trip to Phuket. Located right on the beach and away from the chaos of Patong, it’s the perfect place if you’re looking for a fancy stay.

In Koh Phi Phi Don

I know this article is about doing a day trip to Phi Phi, but as I already said, I really think you should spend at least one night there. If you choose to do so, here are some great places to stay in Phi Phi Don for every budget.

Budget:  Sweet Dee Hostel   – Phi Phi is a bit of a party destination, so if that’s what you’re looking for, a hostel like this is a great place to be. They only offer dorms with lockers, and are centrally located in Phi Phi.

Click here to book your stay at Sweet Dee Hostel in Phi Phi!

Mid-range: Papaya Phi Phi Resort  – This is where I stayed on my second trip to the Phi Phi Islands. It’s not particularly fancy, but has a lovely view, and all the rooms have small balconies where you will be served breakfast in the morning.

Check out the latest prices and availability at Papaya Phi Phi Resort

Luxury: Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort   – I stayed here on my first trip to Phi Phi and can honestly say it’s great. It’s a 10-minute walk from the harbour, in a quieter part of the island, with a great pool and view.

Check out the  availability & prices at Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort

What to pack for your day tour to Phi Phi Island

For a full breakdown of what you should pack for Thailand, check out my Thailand packing list . Here I just included a few essentials that you will need for visiting the Phi Phi Islands.

Fast drying towel – There’s a lot of swimming and lounging on beaches involved in these day trips, so make sure to have one of these! I love these towels because they are quick to dry and they don’t take up much space.

Waterproof jacket – If you visit in rainy season, you’ll be glad to have one of these!

Power bank – You don’t want your phone to die on you just as you’re about to snap a gorgeous photo of that beautiful Phi Phi Island landscape!

Dry bag – To keep your valuables safe and dry during the boat trip.

Final thoughts on doing a Phi Phi Island tour by speedboat

There you have it, the ultimate guide to doing a day trip to the Phi Phi Islands! Have you been to Koh Phi Phi before? How did you find it? Let me know in the comments below!

The islands of the Phi Phi archipelago are amongst the most famous islands in Thailand, and that means they can get incredibly busy. As such, I personally think you’re better off staying in Phi Phi overnight, instead of just a day trip.

That will give you time to properly enjoy these islands, and visit popular places like Maya Bay before the day-trippers arrive.

If your Thailand itinerary doesn’t allow for an overnight stay, and you’re set on a day trip, don’t worry, as it will still be an unforgettable experience, even if just for the day.

The beach of Maya Bay as seen from the sea (boats are no longer allowed in the bay!)

The beach of Maya Bay as seen from the sea (boats are no longer allowed in the bay!)

I’ve been to Thailand four times, and three times to Phi Phi, so I understand the pull of these islands. One of the things I love about Thailand is the rich variety.

After visiting Koh Phi Phi, you could head to the north, play with elephants in Chiang Mai , discover the temples of Chiang Rai or Ayutthaya , explore the hustle and bustle of Bangkok , and even learn to cook pad Thai during a Thai cooking class .

So yes, go on a day trip to Phi Phi Island, but don’t forget to go beyond and see the other beautiful places in Thailand!

I hope you found my Phi Phi Island day trip guide useful, and that it will help you plan the perfect day tour. If you have any questions, just let me know in the comments below!

How to go from Krabi to Phi Phi Island

The island of Koh Phi Phi in Thailand doesn’t have an airport and therefore must be reached by boat.  There are speedboats, ferries, and long tail boats that make this trip, but first, you’ll have to reach one of two main places from which you can get to Phi Phi Island.  These are Phuket and Krabi.  Koh Phi Phi is a small island, and it’s also likely to be busy, so your first consideration should be how long you want to spend here, as a day trip from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi is also a popular option.  This guide covers you whether you’re going from Krabi to Phi Phi Island or Phi Phi Island to Krabi as you’ll need to know the best way to travel between these two destinations.  There are several options for transport between Krabi and Phi Phi Island, but they’re all boats!  Here’s our guide on how to get to Phi Phi Island from Krabi.

Easiest Way to Go from Krabi to Phi Phi

The easiest way to get to Phi Phi from Krabi is to take the combined shuttle and boat – all connections are guaranteed. And it’s really easy.

Where is Phi Phi Island

Phi Phi Island is about 40 kilometers (25 miles) from Krabi, which makes for a relatively quick trip.  If you’re coming here, to Koh Phi Phi from Bangkok, then you’ll need our guide on going from Bangkok to Phi Phi .

The six islands of the Phi Phi Group are found between Phuket Island and the Straits of Malacca, they’re actually equidistant and are in the Andaman Sea.   It takes about 90 minutes to go from Krabi to Phi Phi Don, the main (and only inhabited) island of the group, although you can get there in as little as 30 minutes if you opt for a speedboat.  Bear in mind if you’re traveling in the off-season. aka the wet season, aka the “green” season, then it can take longer, as the sea state is much rougher and the boats will go slower.

How to Go from Krabi to Phi Phi Island – Transport Options

This is a simple guide.  As it’s easy to get to Phi Phi Island from Krabi.  You need to take a boat.  And your choice is what type of boat!

Arriving at Phi Phi Island

You can also snorkel and explore the famous Viking cave, where swallows nest.  There’s Phi Phi Lee – and other parts of the islands only accessible by boat and the glorious Monkey Beach (and yes you get to see monkeys too).  A Thai buffet lunch is provided, as well as time to explore Phi Phi Don island.  This top-rated day trip also includes afternoon snorkeling at Bamboo Island.  Phi Phi island trips are particularly popular, so you should book your place as soon as you know your dates.

Combined Tickets Buses + Ferries from Krabi to Phi Phi Island

The first part of your journey from Krabi to Phi Phi will be to get from wherever you are staying in Krabi to the pier where the ferries leave from.  The pier for Phi Phi Island in Krabi is the Klong Jilad Pier. Taxi from Krabi Bus Terminal to Klong Jilad Pier

It’s easy to take a taxi to the Klong Jilad Pier from Krabi, either ask your hotel or hostel to arrange one, or use Grab to arrange it.  If you haven’t pre-booked a ferry then the first one leaves at about 09:00. This first ferry is likely to be popular with those people coming down from Bangkok on a through ticket.

Ferries from Klong Jilad Pier to Phi Phi Island

You’ll find at least 5 ferries a day going from Klong Jilad Pier to Koh Phi Phi, with the last one leaving at around 15:00.  You can also take speedboats and long tail boats.  The average time that these boats take is 2 hours, although speedboats can get there in 45 minutes.

Koh Phi Phi is a popular island, and it is recommended to book both your accommodation and the ferry before you arrive in Krabi.  You can check and book ferries and fast boats from Krabi to Phi Phi Island here.

Koh Phi Phi Arrival

There are no cars on Phi Phi Island, but there are sidewalks and also signs.  It’s also a small island (9.73 kilometers square – 3.76 miles square) and it’s pretty easy to get around on foot.

You’ll arrive on the single pier, where you’ll be shephered into the line to pay your “Green Tax”. This is a cash only payment that is designed to pay for garbage to be collected on the island. Hold onto your ticket.

Green Tax Phi Phi

Although I mentioned that there are 6 islands in this group, Koh Phi Phi Don is the only one that is inhabited, and this is where the ferries and boats come to.  You’ll arrive at Tonsai Pier, which is in the village of Tonsai, which is itself in Tonsai Bay.  It’s pretty hard to get lost, but you can map out your walking directions to your hotel.

If you’re staying more than a short walk away, then there’s usually a longtail boat transfer included by your hotel. We stayed at the quiet Phi Phi Bayview Resort and they included a transfer for us, we were met off the boat and they took us to a longtail boat which took us to the hotel.

Krabi to Phi Phi Islands: Everything You Need to Know to Plan the Perfect Day Trip or Overnight

' src=

Halfway between Krabi and Phuket in the Andaman Sea, the gorgeous Phi Phi Islands offer towering limestone walls, vibrant blue water, idyllic beaches, and abundant sea life. Visiting these islands during your stay in Krabi is a must. There are several ways to get from both Phuket and Krabi to Phi Phi Islands, either via a guided tour or by taking a ferry.

We researched the options extensively before deciding to book a day tour from Krabi to the Phi Phi Islands. We also considered doing a day trip via the ferry as well as spending a few nights on the Phi Phi Islands. Doing a day trip tour to the Phi Phi Islands from Krabi was the perfect option for our family and we enjoyed every minute of our day on the water.

In this article you can find the best tours to the Phi Phi islands as well as general information to help you plan your visit from Krabi to Phi Phi Islands.

See more of our 2 Week Thailand Itinerary.

Should you Make the Trip from Krabi to Phi Phi Islands?

With so many things to do in Krabi, it’s hard to decide whether a trip to the Phi Phi Islands is worth it and whether there are enough activities on the Phi Phi Islands that are different from the closer islands around Krabi. We did a tour to some of the closer islands and visited Railay Beach and are still glad we decided to go out to the Phi Phi Islands.

In our opinion, the Phi Phi Islands are worth it and different than the mainland and closer islands.

Since the islands are set so far out in the Andaman Sea, you really feel like you are visiting a different place. Also, the islands are inhabited, unlike some of the islands near Krabi. We also found the snorkeling on the Phi Phi Islands to be much better than the snorkeling we did around Krabi.

Are the Islands of Krabi or Phi Phi Islands Better? If you only have time to visit one of these areas I would recommend staying in Krabi and visiting these islands. While we loved the Phi Phi Islands, with several days Krabi offers more options and the local islands are beautiful.

Krabi to Phi Phi Islands

How to Get to Phi Phi Islands from Krabi

There are really just a few ways to get to the Phi Phi Islands from Krabi.

First, you can book a tour – I will go into more detail below, but this is the tour we took. If you are booking a tour, pay attention to the length of the trip, the size of the boat, and whether they offer lunch.

If you are looking to find a cheaper option to get to Krabi or just don’t fancy being on a tour all day, you can also take a ferry out to the Phi Phi Islands . This gives you the flexibility to stay for either a day or do one or more nights on the island.

The ferry ride from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi takes between 1.5-2 hours. The ferry used to leave from right in town in Ao Nang, but there is a new ferry terminal about 3 km south of town. Most tickets will include a free taxi transfer to the ferry terminal – check this when you are purchasing your ferry ticket. Double-check the information when you book as some of the ‘ferries’ you can book are actually large speed boats.

Phi Phi Island Boat Tour From Krabi

The ferry arrives at the largest of the Phi Phi Islands. From here, you can walk, eat, and explore the island, or book a separate boat tour to see some of the other islands (if you are already on Koh Phi Phi, you can book a longtail boat tour like this one ).

There are a couple of ways to book your ferry tickets. One option is to book through Viator for the high-speed ferry. You can also search for and book ferry tickets below. Note that ferries run several times a day.

Where to Stay on the Phi Phi Islands

If you are taking the ferry and booking a separate tour on the islands, you will likely want to spend the night. Here are a few great options we considered for our overnight on Phi Phi:

Viking Nature Resort – Great location and excellent food

Voyagers Hostel – A less expensive option close to the beach

Phi Phi Relax Beach Resort – located across the island you will need to take a boat to get to the resort.

Best Day Tours from Krabi to the Phi Phi Islands

After looking extensively into taking a ferry to the islands and spending the night. We decided that by the time you added up the cost of the ferry, a boat tour on the islands, and the hassle of changing lodging, it was better to visit the islands on a day trip via a speed boat. While we missed the chance to spend the night on the islands, for our family it worked out great.

Krabi to Phi Phi Islands: Sleeping on the Sea Eagle Tour

Speed Boat Tour of Phi Phi Islands Via Sea Eagle – this is the tour we took on a medium-sized speed boat. There were probably about 25 other people on the tour with us. During the tour, we went to all the highlights of the Phi Phi Islands, had lunch, snorkeled, and never felt rushed. We were surprised by how good the snorkeling was when we were there.

Krabi to Phi Phi Islands

Phi Phi Island By Speed Boat from Krabi – This is another tour we considered. The price is higher, but the boat is smaller with fewer people aboard. It includes many of the same stops as the tour we took with Sea Eagle.

You can search for other tours online. We found the best options on Viator and you can see some below. Make sure to read the reviews before booking.

Other Island Hopping Tours from Krabi

If you’ve gotten this far in the post and have decided that this tour isn’t for you, or you’re looking for more information about all the island tours from Krabi, make sure to check out the post: The Ultimate Guide to Visiting the Stunning Islands of Krabi .

Unless you are really rushed on time you should avoid the tours that try to visit the Phi Phi Islands AND some of the other islands in the same day . This means you will need to rush through some of the best stops and you will be exhausted. We were wiped out after our day trip to the Phi Phi Islands and I can’t imagine if we had crammed in more stops.

Krabi to Phi Phi Islands

What to Pack for You Phi Phi Island Tour

Once you’ve decided how to get to the Phi Phi Islands, you will want to make sure you have everything you need for the perfect day. You will be spending lots of time getting in and out of the water, so make sure you wear your bathing suit and bring layers you can put on top. Since you will be eating in a restaurant, you will want to have clothes and shoes you can easily put on without changing.

Here is a list of the items to bring along

  • Camera/phone (in waterproof covering)
  • Shoes (we just brought sandals with us)
  • Water (most tours also have beverages)
  • Snacks (some may be provided)
  • Snorkel Gear (optional – most tours provide this, but we prefer at least our own masks and snorkel)

1. Maya Bay

Maya Bay is one of the most famous spots in Thailand , and rightfully so, as it’s one of the most beautiful sceneries we’ve ever seen due to its fascinating beach in a closed bay.

Beautiful water and beach, Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

Maya Bay ’s popularity and tourism started shortly after the movie ‘The Beach’ starring Leonardo di Caprio, was filmed there in 2000.

Due to mass tourism, Maya Bay closed in 2018 for reef and nature restoration and was closed for four years.

After many years, they reopened Maya Bay in January 2022 with more restrictions than in previous years.

Swimming in Maya Bay is forbidden; you can only walk in water up to the knee depth. If you go in the water any further than knee depth, rangers will whistle and warn you not to do that, and if you continue doing it, you will be fined.

The ban on swimming in Maya Bay is in place to protect the blacktip shark population that’s breeding there.

Sharks at Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

Maya Bay is a part of the Hat Noppharat Thara-Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park, and the entrance fee is 400 baht or 12 USD for adults and 200 baht or 6 USD for children.

Good to know: Some tours to Phi Phi Islands include the Maya Bay fee in the price, but just in case, make sure to check this with your tour operator!

People on the Maya Bay Beach, Phi Phi Islands

While Maya Bay is absolutely stunning and worth visiting, make sure to set your expectations, as this is one of the most visited spots in Thailand , and it will be crowded. It’s something you can not avoid.

Insider tip: Choose an early bird tour or a late afternoon one to have fewer people there (but still some)!

Drone warning: It is forbidden to fly drones in Maya Bay. The area is small, and rangers will stop you immediately if you try to drone from Maya Bay beach.

2. Pi Leh Lagoon

Pi Leh Lagoon is located close to Maya Bay , and it’s a beautiful inlet with crystal clear turquoise water, surrounded by stunning karst hills.

Beautiful bay at Phi Phi Islands, Krabi

We enjoyed a 15-minute swimming stop at Pileh Lagoon. We jumped in from our boat and had a fantastic time.

Depending on which tour you book, you might also visit another bay for swimming.

Note: While Pi Leh Lagoon and the color of the water is beautiful, it was pretty crowded with boats, so we had to stay close to our boat and swim in a bit smaller area than we’d loved to. Still, it was very much enjoyable.

3. Viking Cave

On the way to the next stops from Pileh Lagoon, you pass by the Viking Cave, a privately owned cave used for collecting swiftlet bird nests.

Viking Cave, swiflet birds nest, Phi Phi Islands

The swiftlet bird nests cost a lot of money and are used in bird’s nest soup in many SEA countries like Thailand , Vietnam , Cambodia, Malaysia , and in China. Moreover, bird’s nests have been consumed by royalty for centuries as the most luxurious, priceless, and nutritious food.

4. Monkey Beach

Monkey Beach in Phi Phi Islands is a famous beach where, as the name implies, you can see monkeys.

The monkeys often come to the beach, and you can see them swimming in the water if you’re lucky.

We only had a short stop here and didn’t go out to the beach; we just observed a few monkeys from the boat. And we didn’t mind a brief visit here.

Note: We were encouraged not to feed the monkeys, so if you’re reading this, please remember this if you visit. 🙂

5. Snorkeling

Phi Phi Islands are great for snorkeling, although it depends on the spot you visit, which depends on the itinerary of the tour and the weather conditions that day.

Swimming in Pi Leh Lagoon, Phi Phi Islands

On our visit, visibility wasn’t the best, and it wasn’t the best snorkeling spot we’ve been to in Thailand , but we still enjoyed it.

Note: The visibility depends on the weather, as with strong waves and cloudy skies, it will be much lower.

For the best snorkeling in Thailand , check out the Surin Islands , Koh Tao , or Phi Phi Islands (beyond Maya Bay).

Snorkeling on a Phi Phi Islands day trip

After seeing the main highlights of Phi Phi islands , you head out for lunch.

We had a Thai buffet lunch at the restaurant of Phi Phi Holiday Resort on Phi Phi Don Island. But it might be another resort restaurant on your visit.

Lunch on Phi Phi Islands day trip

And the lunch included vegetarian and vegan options as well. So just advise the tour operator of your food preferences in advance.

We quickly ate lunch to enjoy swimming at Laemtong beach. While it’s not the most beautiful beach in Phi Phi , as it can be crowded with boats, the water was nice and clear, and we enjoyed swimming there.

7. Bamboo Island

The first or last stop of your Phi Phi Islands day tour from Krabi will likely be Bamboo Island (Ko Mai Phai), a tiny, beautiful island with a dreamy sandy beach.

It’s also a great snorkeling spot as it’s surrounded by a nice coral reef.

Bamboo Island, Koh Phi Phi, Krabi

8. 4 Islands – Poda, Chicken, Koh Tup, Koh Mor

Depending on the tour you choose, it can also include visiting the famous group of islands near Krabi , which are Koh Poda, Chicken Island (Koh Kai), Koh Tup, and Koh Mor.

What to expect

It’s true that the tour to Phi Phi Islands from Krabi can be a bit hectic, as it’s the most popular trip, there are always crowds, and you’re on a tight schedule.

But it allows you to see the main spots and enjoy snorkeling and swimming at beautiful places like the small islands with beautiful sandy beaches.

Snorkeling around Phi Phi Islands

We highly recommend booking the early bird tour from Krabi if you want to avoid the crowds at least a tiny bit.

Maya Bay is the busiest spot of the tour as it’s crowded with people from Phuket and Krabi and boats from Phi Phi Don.

And the most chaotic part is the boat docking at Maya Bay, as they’re not permitted to dock inside the bay but rather on the other side where there is a floating dock. And then you walk for about 5 minutes to get to the Maya Bay beach.

Lo Samah Bay, floating pier for Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

And boats are not permitted to stay docked at the floating pier, so after you’re done with the beach, you must stay with your group and board the boat simultaneously. When you’re done, the boat must move away to make space for the other arriving or departing boats.

We were lucky to avoid the biggest crowd at Maya Bay, as when we left 30 minutes later, we saw a much more enormous influx of visitors coming there.

Note: If you want a tour around Phi Phi Islands with a traditional longtail boat, you must first get to Phi Phi Don and then take a longtail boat tour.

Private or shared Phi Phi Islands tour

Both private and shared tours to Phi Phi Islands from Krabi are great, as you get to experience the most famous spots in one of the most beautiful areas of Thailand .

Arijana Tkalcec and Matej Span at Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

For those with a higher budget or groups, doing a private Phi Phi Islands tour makes sense, as you can customize your itinerary, have a more relaxed schedule, and enjoy the places you want more.

On the other hand, the shared boats are a great budget option. And if you want the best deal, take the early bird one.

Check out the top-rated shared boat tours below:

Is the Phi Phi day tour worth it?

The day trip to Phi Phi Islands and the famous Maya Bay is the most famous and one of the must-do things while in Krabi .

And the day tour from Krabi to Phi Phi Islands is especially worth your money if your budget or schedule doesn’t permit a stay at Phi Phi Don Island.

What is the price of the Phi Phi Islands day tour?

The price for a Phi Phi Islands day tour from Krabi is between 50 USD and 120 USD for the shared tour and between 250 USD and 600 USD for the private boat.

What does the day tour include?

The typical Phi Phi Islands day tour includes:

  • Hotel transfer
  • Fresh fruits onboard
  • Water and soft drinks
  • Life jackets, snorkeling equipment, and fins
  • National Park fees (not all tours include it, so make sure to check before!)

What to pack for the Phi Phi Islands day tour?

These are the main things you need to pack for the Phi Phi Islands day tour:

  • Reef safe sunscreen
  • Quick-dry Towel
  • Bathing suit
  • Dry clothes (use code SHIPPEDAWAY for 10% at Unbound Merino )
  • Waterproof bag
  • Waterproof phone pouch
  • Action camera ( GoPro with a waterproof case or Osmo Action )

We have a waterproof backpack that was very useful for our island hopping trips in Thailand and kayaking or beach days. We can fit our camera and drone inside and feel safe.

Boats, especially speedboats, get wet, if not from water splashing inside, then from constantly going in and out of the water, especially on snorkeling trips.

Most people were using waterproof phone pouches with their phones instead of action cameras, which works perfectly fine.

Best time to visit Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay

The best time to visit Phi Phi Islands and Maya Bay is between December and March when the weather is the most stable.

The hottest months in Phi Phi Islands are mid-March to May, when the weather slowly worsens as the monsoon approaches.

The monsoon season with heavy rainfall in Phi Phi Islands is from June to October.

Arijana Tkalcec walking in the water at Maya Bay, Phi Phi Islands

However, the weather in Phi Phi Islands can be unpredictable. For example, we visited in January and had a mix of beautiful clear blue skies, clouds, and rain later in the day.

But don’t let this discourage you from visiting. 🙂

Conservation and sustainability

While the coral reefs around the Krabi islands aren’t the healthiest in Thailand , they are slowly improving.

We love that there’s lots of effort and measures taken to protect and expand the corals, like replanting and limiting access to some areas.

So, on this tour, it’s encouraged to only apply reef-safe sunscreen at least 20 minutes before getting into the water so it doesn’t wash off your body.

The key ingredients you want to avoid in sunscreen are Oxybenzone and Octinoxate, which are known to be the most destructive to reefs.

Read more: Environmental effects of sunscreen (Wikipedia)

Chilling and swimming in Pi Leh Lagoon, Phi Phi Islands

Important to know: If you put sunscreen right before entering the water, it can wash off completely, so you won’t be protected, and you can further damage ocean life.

You also shouldn’t throw any food into the sea. They encourage NOT to feed the fish, which is very important for corals.

We didn’t have high expectations for the Phi Phi Islands day tour, but we thoroughly enjoyed our day around the fascinating scenery.

So going to Phi Phi Islands just on a day tour from Krabi is, in our opinion, still very much worth it.

Phi Phi Island – tours and independent visits

Last updated on 28 October 2018 by Your Krabi

krabi day trip to phi phi

Click for larger view

The Phi Phi group of islands consist of four islands: Phi Phi Don (the only inhabited / developed one of the group); Phi Phi Leh; Bamboo Island (Koh Pai); and Mosquito Island (Koh Yung); and two rocky outcrops frequented by divers: Koh Bida Nok and Bida Nai.

Despite the crowds, the Phi Phi Islands remain a Krabi ‘must-see’ and richly deserve their reputation as ‘the jewels of the Andaman Sea’. Though the main sites visited can be clogged with boats (Phi Phi is also accessible by day trip from Phuket, from where the majority of the boats come), they are still, in our opinion, worth visiting for the incredible shifting landscapes and myriad hues of the water as you pass by.

The vast majority of people choose to visit Phi Phi on a day trip from Krabi or Phuket. The standard speedboat tours to Phi Phi departing from the Krabi mainland will take you to world-famous beaches such as Maya Bay, where the movie ‘The Beach’ was set [update: Maya Bay is now closed indefinitely ], the pristine white sand and turquoise water of Bamboo Island, and the twin bays of Phi Phi Don.

The “10 stops” advertised in most programs really consist of these 3 – 4 beaches and 2 snorkeling stops in open water – usually around Hin Klang and Monkey Bay, which are sadly now a poor shade of the colourful coral gardens they once were, though there are still fish to be seen. The other “stops” are a mere slowing down of the boat at certain spots on the cruise to take pictures, such as at Viking Cave or in some pretty coves around Phi Phi Leh (Losamah, Lao Bileh).

krabi day trip to phi phi

At around midday, all the tours stop for a mediocre but edible buffet lunch on the only inhabited island in the group, Phi Phi Don. Day tour operators unfortunately have no choice but to use the services of this restaurant; if you object to the canteen-style food and location (note: the restaurant itself is clean and otherwise perfectly ok), you are free to eat independently elsewhere – we would recommend any of the beachfront cafes a short walk across the island on Lohdalum Bay, or the eateries in the village. Do inform your guide, and check the departure time of your boat before you go, however!

Note that speed boat travel is not recommended for infants under 1 year old, pregnant women, or anyone with back problems, or prone to seasickness, due to the bumpy ride. In these cases, or for any other reasons you may have for not joining a speedboat tour, your options would be:

  • to visit the islands with a dive boat tour from Ao Nang or Krabi (there is no stop on Maya Bay, but it is comfortable and excellent for keen snorkelers)
  • to visit only the main island, Phi Phi Don, with the daily passenger ferry from Ao Nang or Krabi Town (which would give you 3 -4 hours on the island, enough to climb to the viewpoint, or take a short longtail trip to Phi Phi Leh)
  • to visit the islands departing from Phi Phi Don, by staying overnight there – a cruise of the neighbouring islands can then be done in any number of ways, e.g. by longtail boat, glass bottomed boat, yacht, sleep aboard cruise, dive boat etc.

krabi day trip to phi phi

For those who don’t mind speedboats, but object to group tours, boat charters to Phi Phi are available as well .

We list all of the group tour options available for the Phi Phi Island with departure from Krabi below. The order of places visited on the Phi Phi Island tour varies year round according to the tides and weather, so it is not practical to post an hour-by-hour itinerary. There is a 400 baht entry fee payable by all non-Thai visitors to “The Beach” (Ao Maya) on Phi Phi Leh.

Visiting the Phi Phi Islands from Phuket or Krabi in Southern Thailand

The beautiful Phi Phi Islands are stunning and often included on adventures in Thailand. In fact, I’d say that visiting the Phi Phi Islands from Phuket or Krabi is one of the best things to do in the whole of South East Asia. For many people, it is one of the main reasons to go Thailand.

Undoubtedly, the islands are stunning. They are home to some of the world’s most gorgeous beaches and impossibly clear waters. Days spent in the Phi Phi islands are picture-perfect paradise. Silky soft white sand and huge karst limestone rocks rise from the turquoise waters. If you’ve seen the film ‘The Beach’ with Leonardo diCaprio, you’ll recognise this area. It’s certainly one of the reasons these islands have become so popular.

To visit the Phi Phi Islands, you have two main options. You can either visit as a day tour from one of the neighbouring larger towns (Phuket or Krabi). Or you can travel on the ferry to the islands and spend a few days there. I’ve done both options over the past few years and it really comes down to a personal preference, and time.

So in this guide, I’ll share some of the options on offer for visiting the Phi Phi Islands from Phuket or Krabi, whether as a day trip or few a couple of nights. I’ll cover options for getting there, potential day trip companies and places to stay, so you can make an informed decision for your trip.

Visiting the islands from Phuket

Where are the Phi Phi Islands?

The Phi Phi Islands are located in the Andaman Sea on the western side of Southern Thailand. The main points of access are Phuket and Krabi, both of which are similar distances from the Phi Phi Islands (approx 46km). You can fly in on regular daily flights from Bangkok and other destinations in South East Asia into both these places. You can even fly to these places on airlines such as Emirates from Dubai, meaning you can miss out Bangkok entirely, if you want.

However, from Phuket or Krabi, there are no flights, so the only way to arrive is by water.

Location of the Phi Phi Islands

Why go to the Phi Phi Islands?

As mentioned, you have two main options.

You can either visit as a day trip, or for several nights. When I first visited the Phi Phi Islands in 2010, all the accommodation options were pretty poor and basic (although great as a backpacker). If I went now (in my late 20s), there’s not a chance you’d find me sleeping some of those places today. However, several beautiful hotels have opened covering all budgets.

In fact. the Phi Phi Islands has had a real tidy up. Back in 2010, I found the main island Koh Phi Phi Don to be covered in litter, particularly the beach nearest town. It was filthy. There was also a lot of construction work going on, due to a rebuild following the 2004 tsunami – you may remember the Phi Phi islands was one of the worst hit areas.

Today, the islands have been restored to their former beauty, and are better than ever. Eco-friendly initiatives have been implemented across the islands, meaning the water is far cleaner and the beaches have little to no litter. It’s far better.

Day trip from Phuket to the Phi Phi Islands

Further, Koh Phi Phi used to be an absolute must-visit on any backpacker’s itinerary in South East Asia. Before other places in Thailand were ‘discovered’, Koh Phi Phi received the majority of the tourists. The infrastructure was buckling under the weight, and bars and hotels were being built in very rushed conditions to meet the demand of tourists. Whilst it was a lot of fun, it attracted an irrespsonsible kind of tourist and all kinds of accidents were happening.

But things have really changed. There are now so many other beautiful beach destinations to visit from Phuket and Krabi that it has really relieved the pressures on Koh Phi Phi.

The overall quality of everything has now improved. It’s back to being the stunning island paradise it once was.

Day trip from Phuket to the Phi Phi Islands

Visit the Phi Phi Islands as a day trip or stay for a few nights?

If you visit for the day from Phuket or Krabi, you can still spend time on some of the most beautiful islands but obviously, for far shorter. It’s possible to see the main sites such as Maya Bay and other stunning beaches and coves, but you wouldn’t visit Koh Phi Phi Don, the main island.

If you stay for several nights, you’d still need to join an organised boat tour in order to visit some of the scenic spots in the Phi Phi Islands. But you would have the luxury of spending several days relaxing at one of the well-priced hotels.

Visiting the Phi Phi Islands for the day from Phuket is probably the better option if you’re short on time. It’s one less extra transfer/movement, which means less risk of inclement weather and therefore cancellations. However, the cost of a day trip from Phuket or Krabi can be quite steep.

On the other hand, doing a day tour to some of the scenic spots around the Phi Phi Islands from a hotel already located there does mean you might get to some of the spots before the crowds arrive.

Anyway, please find my mini guides to either visiting as a day trip or staying in the Phi Phi Islands below.

Maya Bay

Visiting Phi Phi Islands as a day trip from Phuket or Krabi

So if you think visiting the Phi Phi Islands as a day trip makes best sense, than this section is for you.

For this, I would recommend booking a day tour ahead of time. There are so many companies all over Phuket and Krabi offering tours, it’s hard to know which one to go with. If you book a day trip through your hotel, you’re likely to pay a premium, and if you book with a tour operator at a local agency, you can’t really be sure of the quality of the tour.

There, I strongly advise pre-planning your tour in advance. Not only you can read reviews of other customers, but you can also see photos of the boat and other inclusions.

Speedboat from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi

I’ve popped a few tour suggestions below, covering departures from both Krabi and Phuket.

Group tours – between £40-£120 per person. Prices varies based on boat type and inclusions.

Departures from Krabi

  • Phi Phi Islands Full-Day Speedboat Trip from Krabi
  • Krabi: Phi Phi Sunrise & 4 Islands by Speedboat with Lunch
  • Krabi: Phi Phi Islands by Premium Speedboat
  • From Krabi: Phi Phi and 4 Islands Luxury Speedboat Tour

Departures from Phuket

  • Phi Phi Islands: Early Bird Tour From Phuket
  • From Phuket: Deluxe Phi Phi Tour by Speedboat & Lunch Buffet
  • Phuket: Phi Phi, Maya, Bamboo, and Maiton Island Day Trip
  • Early Riser Phi Phi Island Trip by Speedboat from Phuket
  • From Phuket: Phi Phi Sunrise Small Group Tour & Lunch Buffet

  • From Phuket: Phi Phi & Khai Islands Snorkeling by Speedboat
  • Phuket/Khaolak: Phi Phi Islands Day Trip & View Point Hike
  • Phuket: Phi Phi, Maya Bay & Yao Yai Premium Speedboat Tour
  • Phuket: Phi Phi Island Snorkeling Small-Group Day Trip

Private tours – far more expensive but a truly special experience. If you have the full group size, you might find it to be really good value. These tours cost from around £400- £780 per group of 10, so £40 or £78 per person.

  • Phuket: Full-Day Private Speedboat Charter to Phi Phi Island
  • Krabi: Private Large Speed Boat Charter To Phi Phi Islands (20 people)
  • Phi Phi Islands Full-Day Private Speedboat Charter from Krabi
  • Krabi: Private Speedboat Tour to Phi Phi and 4 Islands

Alternatively, another company I can recommend is Phuket Sail Tours who have some brilliant TripAdvisor reviews.

What to expect on a day trip from Phuket or Krabi

Most boat trips include pick-up at your hotel and transfer to the marina.

On arrival to the marina, you may have to fill in a couple of forms, and you may receive breakfast.

Following this, you’ll jump on board your speedboat (or similar). I recommend finding a company that either only takes small groups, or one that states it doesn’t over fill the boat. You’ll see many boats through the day that are huge and crammed with people. It definitely isn’t a nice experience!

Speedboat from Krabi to Koh Phi Phi

The first stop is often Bamboo Island. If your tour arrives early, you might get the chance to enjoy unbelievable paradise before anyone else arrives. The beach is immaculate and the sea crystal clear – a really unbelievably gorgeous spot.

Bamboo bear near Koh Phi Phi islands

Throughout the day, you’ll enjoy a number of snorkeling stops, and a delicious lunch prepared by the team.

Most tours include a stop at Maya Bay. Made famous by ‘The Beach’ film, it is this very beach where mass tourism has taken over. Boats jostle for space up alongside the bay. However, I have seen some recent reports that Maya Bay has been closed to tourists. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is still the case. I visited in 2010 and was one of a handful of people on the beach. On my most recent visit in early 2018, it was completely packed.

Staying in the Phi Phi Islands: A Travel Guide

So you’ve decided to base yourself in the Phi Phi Islands for a few nights? Great! Here’s a helpful travel guide.

Getting there

If you’re not joining as a day tour, you’ll most likely need to work out your own arrangements.

Fortunately, taking a public ferry or a speedboat from Phuket or Krabi to the Phi Phi Islands is very straight forward. You can even connect on boats from other towns or islands in the region now, making it more efficient than ever. For example, you can take a high speed ferry directly from Koh Lipe , Koh Lanta or Railay , which is very convenient!

Visiting the Koh Phi Phi islands

The public ferry is the most popular way to travel to the Phi Phi Islands. It takes around 1-2 hours from Phuket or Krabi. In Phuket, the main port is Rassada Pier, located in Phuket Town. In Krabi, the port is Klong Jirad Pier. Neither are that close to Phuket/Krabi’s airports.

You can book on tickets on the day, but I’d recommend getting to port early. Alternatively, you can book your ferry transfers here.

Ferry transfer Phuket to/from Phi Phi or even all the way from Phuket airport to Phi Phi here.

The ferries are pretty good now. Some have open decks for sunbathing and the inside cabins have aircon.

The other alternative is a private speedboat transfer. This can be really convenient to take you right to the drop-off point for your hotel. Particularly if it’s not on the main island. This is a more expensive mode of transport, but can be really good value if it’s a group travelling.

Book your speedboat transfer from Phuket to Koh Phi Phi here or Krabi beaches to Koh Phi Phi here .

Visiting the Koh Phi Phi islands

Where to stay in the Phi Phi Islands

So in this blog post, I’ve been talking about the main island – Phi Phi Don. But realistically, if you’re going to base yourself in Phi Phi for a few days, you can stay in any of the six islands. They’re called Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh, Koh Yung, Koh Phai, Bida Nok and Bida Nai.

Phuket to Koh Phi Phi

I’ve listed a few hotels in the Koh Phi Phi area that would all offer a wonderful stay. It’s important to note however that there aren’t any really ultra-luxurious hotels in the area. If you’re looking something a bit more higher end, I’d recommend staying in Phuket and doing a day visit.

Luxury hotels:

  • Phi Phi CoCo Beach Resort
  • Zeavola Resort
  • Phi Phi Cliff Beach Resort

Mid-range hotels:

  • Phi Phi Island Village Beach Resort
  • Holiday Inn Resort Phi Phi Island
  • The Cove Phi Phi
  • PP Princess Resort
  • Phi Phi Andaman Beach Resort
  • Phi Phi Villa Resort
  • Coco Bella Resort

Thanks for great info ! When would you say is best time of year to go there ?

December to April is like peak time because the weather is best but I’ve been all year round and except for a heavy downpour each afternoon, even the summer months were fine! Just a bit steamier too! x

I have been to Phi phi island years ago but not really going into a tour in the water. Thank you for showing how to tour without congestion. I need that as I love my pictures without many photo bombers in it. I also love some quiet time without too many other tourists. Your pictures look awesome, the water look so clear and weather was great!

I’d love to be able to see a place so incredibly beautiful without the stressful crowds impeding my view. Thank you for providing this amazing post on ways to avoid the hassle of other tourists! 🙂

Oh, my goodness!! Phi Phi Island is breathtaking and stunning. The peaceful and calming ambiance of this island is so fulfilling and relaxing. I would love to visit this place someday.

WOW that place looks absolutely gorgeous… and as I sit here looking out my window at the snow you are certainly inspiring me to work harder and make enough money to get my ass on a vacation somewhere warm!

This looks like an amazing place to visit. I love how remote this location is!

I’m completely in awe, this is exactly what I imagine when I think of my ideal paradise. I would love to visit Thailand one day. Also fabulous tip about walking to the end of the island for a more peaceful, less crowded time!

What lovely pictures! I have been dying to go here for like…forever! I am just living through you right now 🙂

Absolutely beautiful and so glad that you were able to find a way to enjoy it without the crowds. Not sure how you ever left that!

Thank you! 🙂

I haven’t seen that film (not a fan of DiCaprio), but gosh, these islands look gorgeous! Such a pity that they’re so popular. It’s understandable of course, but I just hate the crowd of tourists.

Same… defintely better to go in Spring than Summer 🙂

This is absolutely a stunning place to relax. I like the laid-back vibes, there’s no schedule, no hustle-and-bustle, no reason to be in a hurry.

Exactly! True paradise 🙂

Oh such a cool trip! I went there with a scuba diving excursion which was lots of fun. But we didn’t get the chance to stop and swim on the beach. Your photos look so lovely 🙂

Ah awesome, did you see lots of good fishies?! We had opposite trips, but I’m a bit scared of diving! Thanks 🙂 x

I would love to go to Thailand and hopefully be able to visit Phi Phi as I love being in the beach. Great photos you have here!

Loved your blog. Thanks for sharing this content to help us travel better. One question- I am planning Phuket-krabi trip in November. Can I took ferry from phuket to phi phi and then 1 stay in phi phi. and after that return ferry to Krabi.

Round the World in 30 Days

5 Dreamy Day Trips from Krabi that Prove Thailand is Drop Dead Gorgeous

Krabi Thailand Things to do

Inside: From the stunning limestone cliffs of Phang Nga Bay to the glittering beaches of the Phi Phi Islands, here’s why Krabi is the perfect home base to discover the wonders of Thailand.

Ahh, Thailand.

It’s one of my favorite countries in the world to visit. In fact, I’ve included Thailand on the itinerary for 8 out of 10 of my Round-the-World trips . I just can’t get enough.

Note: This post may contain affiliate links. If you choose to book through these links, I receive a small commission, which I will undoubtedly blow on more flights (it’s a vicious cycle).  All of this internet voodoo takes place at no additional cost to you.

It’s so much more than just the fascinating culture and friendly smiles of welcoming locals. From gilded temples to sparkling white-sand beaches, Thailand is home to a stunning landscape that beckons travelers (like me) back again and again.

And let’s be honest, Thai food is worth the trip alone. From street food to seafood, it’s a culinary adventure.

But while the bustling city of Bangkok is a must when visiting Thailand, the incredible Thai islands are the real show stopper.

Read More: Everything’s Better in Bangkok

I’m talking about some of the world’s dreamiest tropical islands. More than 1,400 islands, in fact. Thailand’s beautifully diverse islands wow visitors with turquoise lagoons, white-sand beaches, coral reefs, and abundant marine life.

And many of those Instagram-worthy islands can be explored within a short speedboat ride of popular resort destinations like Phuket and Krabi.

But first, do I need a Covid test for Thailand?

As of October 2022, Thailand is fully open to all travelers regardless of vaccination status and without the need for pre-arrival testing. After several years of Covid-related restrictions, this is welcome news!

Now, let’s get back to the fun stuff!

Which is better Krabi or Phuket?

Yes, most of the lovely islands I list below can also be visited by day trip from Phuket. However, I much prefer Krabi as a home base for island-hopping in Thailand.

And here’s why.

A small province in the south of Thailand, Krabi is bordered by the calm, azure Andaman Sea on one side and Malaysia on the other. It’s a more tranquil option than the popular tourist hub of Phuket, and that’s why Krabi is the perfect place to unwind and relax on an empty beach.

Tip: If you don’t like crowds, never, ever go to Phuket over Chinese New Year.

Read More: Packed in Phuket: A Lesson in What Not to Do for Chinese New Year

Sure, Phuket is mountainous and beautiful. But it’s also jam-packed with high-end resorts. And that equals traffic.

So when given the choice between the mega-resorts and traffic of Phuket versus laid-back Krabi, I choose Krabi.

Every. Single. Time.

The province of Krabi boasts some of Thailand’s most spectacular beaches. Resorts here are more spread out, beaches are less crowded and sunsets are divine.

So if you’re trying to decide between Phuket and Krabi, choose Krabi. You won’t regret it.

Krabi Thailand

How to Get from Bangkok to Krabi

While there are a few international flights directly to Krabi (from Singapore, Malaysia, Qatar, and China), most international flights arrive in Thailand via Bangkok.

From there, it’s a quick, easy, and affordable flight to Krabi’s (KBV) airport with round-trip flights averaging less than $100 US.

Flights to Krabi are available from both of Bangkok’s airports, Suvarnabhumi International Airport (BKK – where international flights arrive) and Don Mueang International Airport (DMK – home to most domestic flights).

Flights from Don Mueang tend to be a little cheaper. However, if you’re arriving on an international flight into BKK and heading straight to Krabi, it’s not worth the considerable hassle to change airports.

Of course, if you’re spending a few days in Bangkok before heading on to the islands, flights from Don Mueang are a great option.

Do I need a rental car in Krabi?

It’s not necessary to have a rental car in Krabi. Transportation options are readily available at the airport and most day trips include pickup at your resort.

That said, I always prefer to rent a car when visiting Krabi. I enjoy the freedom of having my own wheels to explore on my own schedule.

And since Krabi covers a much larger area than Phuket, having a car can be an advantage to get from your resort to Krabi Town or to the pier to hire a long-tail boat for the day.

I would NOT, however, recommend getting a car in Phuket. Distances in Phuket are shorter, traffic is a real issue, and taxis and tuk-tuks are an affordable way to get around.

By comparison, driving the country roads of Krabi province is very straightforward as long as you’re comfortable driving on the left. If you do decide to rent a car, I like DiscoverCars.com for finding the best deals with no surprises at the counter.

My favorite rental car booking site to use all over the world. No hidden costs, free cancellation, and 24/7 customer support.

What’s the best time to visit Krabi?

For both Phuket and Krabi, the best time to visit is mid-November through April which is considered high season. You’ll find the holiday months of December and January especially popular, as well as the weeks surrounding Chinese New Year.

During the high season months, you’ll enjoy sunny skies and calmer seas for boat trips making this an ideal time to visit.

However, you can visit either destination year-round. But if you do visit in the summer rainy season, expect the occasional torrential downpour and a 50/50 chance of canceled boat trips.

All of my trips to Thailand have been in the high season months. Except for one visit to Krabi in July. Yes, we got a lot of rain on that trip, but we also got fewer crowds and terrific hotel deals. So there are a few perks to visiting in the low season.

How many days in Krabi is enough?

Honestly, you could spend a month in Krabi and still keep finding new islands and beaches to explore. Or you could spend just a week and squeeze in all the terrific island day trips I’ve listed below.

I’d say a week is the minimum amount of time to properly explore the region and some of the best nearby islands. But if you have 10 days or two weeks, even better.

Where to stay in Krabi

Krabi has everything from 5-star luxury resorts and charming boutique properties to budget hotels and apartment rentals. I’m a big fan of some of Krabi’s resort options since resorts of this caliber outside of Southeast Asia would be twice the price.

In other words, it’s easy to find luxury for less in Thailand.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Banyan Tree Krabi – For a real splurge, this chic beachfront resort is a true oasis. Situated on beautiful Tab Kaek Beach, each room is a spacious suite with stylish decor. The best part? Every suite comes complete with a private pool. If you’ve always dreamed of a suite with your own private pool, this is one of the most affordable places to find it. In fact, a room with a private pool will run you twice as much per night at the Rayavadee (below).
  • Dusit Thani Krabi Beach Resort – I first stayed at this affordable, luxury resort back when it was the Sheraton Krabi and it’s always been one of my favorite places to stay when visiting Krabi. Located on peaceful Klong Muang Beach, this resort has everything you need for a relaxing Krabi holiday…at half the price of the other two options on this list. Bonus: There are several restaurants within walking distance so you can avoid the typical overpriced resort restaurants.
  • Rayavadee Krabi – When it comes to natural, scenic locations, the Rayavadee resort is hard to beat. Located on Railay Beach, Rayavadee is surrounded by soaring limestone cliffs and swaying palms. All rooms are private villas (called “Pavilions”) that blend seamlessly with the natural surroundings.

What are the best islands to visit from Krabi?

So let’s get to the good stuff…island hopping!

If you’re visiting Krabi, here are five great island day trips to add to your must-do list:

1. Hong Island

Set against the spectacular backdrop of Phang Nga Bay, the four small islands that make up the Koh Hong group are widely considered to be some of the area’s most beautiful.

A part of the National Marine Park, the largest of the four islands is the superbly scenic Hong Island. This uninhabited island features soaring limestone cliffs and a vast interior lagoon (the “ chamber ” from whence its Thai name, “ Hong ” originates).

Hong Island Krabi Thailand

The deep emerald green of the lagoon is accessed through a dramatic cliff passage and is best explored by kayak or longtail boat. And don’t forget to bring a few slices of bread to feed the schools of tropical fish that will eagerly eat right out of your hand just a few steps from shore.

Krabi to Hong Island by Speedboat Tour

There are plenty of group day trips that visit the Hong Islands. The benefit of a group tour is that they allow you to also visit the small beautiful islands of Pakbia, Rai, Lahding, and Daeng in one easy trip.

The downside, of course, is that you’ll be visiting the islands with lots of other day-trippers.

Hong Island Private Longtail Boat

Hong Island One-Day Tour by Speed Boat

A speed boat group tour is the most affordable way to see Hong Island from Krabi. This 6-hour trip allows you to take in more of the surrounding islands and also includes lunch, drinks, and snacks. The only downside is you’ll be visiting with a group.

Krabi to Hong Island on Your Own

The closest beach to reach Hong Island is Klong Muang, where I recently stayed at the Dusit Thani Krabi. A longtail boat from this quiet beach will have you stepping off the dock onto Hong Island in just over 30 minutes.

Krabi to Hong Island by Private Longtail Boat

If you want to book your Hong Island trip in advance instead of hiring a longtail boat when you arrive, this private tour is a great choice. They also provide transportation from your hotel:

Hong Island Private Longtail Boat

Hong Island Tour by Private Longtail Boat

A private longtail boat is the only way to beat the crowds at Hong Island and this trip is my favorite option. Ignore the start times listed, they’ll customize the trip to whenever you want to go. My advice? Get an early start and head out by 7:30am.

Fair warning, go early if you want to capture the image above. We arrived a little after 8:00am and tour boats began to show up in force by 10:00am and continued throughout the day. On your own, you can easily visit Hong Island as a half-day trip (in the morning) and plan something else for the afternoon.

Bottom Line:  If you’re looking for a quick and easy trip to a beautiful offshore island, Hong Island is a terrific choice.

2. Phi Phi Islands

The Phi Phi islands are an archipelago of six islands in Thailand. The two largest and most well-known islands are Ko Phi Phi Don and its sister island, Ko Phi Phi Leh.

The islands catapulted to fame in 2000 when Phi Phi Leh’s stunning Maya Bay was featured in the film “ The Beach ” with Leonardo DiCaprio. Due to large waves that make the entrance to the bay dangerous in the low season, it’s only possible to visit Maya Bay from November to April.

However, in 2018 severe over-tourism led Thai officials to temporarily close Maya Bay to visitors. While it was initially announced to be a 6-month closure, the bay remained closed to visitors for several years.

Thankfully, as of October 1, 2023, Maya Bay is once again open to visitors. So get there while you can!

Tip: Before you book a Phi Phi Islands tour, check with the tour operator to be sure it includes a stop at Maya Bay. While the bay has re-opened, not all tour operators have added this stop back to the itinerary.

Koh Phi Phi Thailand

Can you spend the night on Phi Phi Don?

Indeed you can! And there are some gorgeous resorts on the island. Here are a few great resort options on Phi Phi Don:

  • Zeavola Resort  – Generally speaking, hotels are pretty affordable on Phi Phi Don. But if you’re looking for a bit of a splurge, this secluded beachfront resort is my top choice on the island. Located on the northern tip of Phi Phi Don, this 10-acre retreat with a private, pristine beach is a true oasis on an island better known for backpackers and guesthouses.
  • Phi Phi Holiday Resort  – Just a bit further south from Zeavola on the tranquil northern peninsula, this resort benefits from the same scenic location at a more affordable price. While the rooms are slightly dated (compared to Zeavola), they are sparkling clean and well-equipped. And the stretch of beachfront at this resort is so gorgeous you’ll have trouble tearing yourself away to explore the rest of the island.
  • HIP Seaview Resort @ Phi Phi  – Situated on a hilltop with panoramic sea views (hence the name), this boutique resort is a steal with most rates below $100 US/night. Rooms are comfy bungalow-style, most offering stunning views thanks to the elevated location. The flip side of that? To reach the beach, you’ll need to navigate a considerable stairway.

Krabi to the Phi Phi Islands by Tour

If you don’t have enough time to spend the night on beautiful Phi Phi Don, you can still visit the island from Krabi by day trip. Due to the travel time out to the island and back, most tours last at least 7 hours.

There are dozens of tour options to choose from. Here are a few good ones:

Krabi to the Phi Phi Islands on Your Own

To go it on your own, you have two options – ferry or speed boat. The ferry is the most popular (and affordable) option and takes about 90 minutes. During high season, it’s advisable to book your tickets in advance. Ferries depart from Krabi’s Klong Jilad Pier.

All ferries arrive on Phi Phi Don’s Ton Sai Pier.

Speed boats to Phi Phi take about an hour and are available from Ao Nang Pier, Railay Beach Pier, and the Krabi River Marina.

Because timetables and prices change frequently, it’s best to get the most current information from your hotel before planning your day trip.

3. The 4 Islands Tour

One of the most popular day trips from Krabi, the 4 Islands Tour includes Koh Poda, Ko Kai (Chicken Island), Tup Island, and Phranang Cave Beach.

Chicken Island Krabi Thailand

This day trip includes 4 small islands with breathtaking beaches and terrific snorkeling. Plan on a full day for this one, too. The average trip is a minimum of 6 hours and typically includes lunch.

Hong Island Private Longtail Boat

4 Island Sunset Snorkeling Cruise + bioluminescent Night Snorkel

This is my favorite of the “4-islands” trips because it actually includes 5 islands! Plus sunset and a very awesome night snorkel. You’ll spend the day exploring on a classic junk boat instead of a speed boat and a buffet dinner is also included.

Bottom Line:  If you’re looking to squeeze in several unique islands in a single day, the 4-Islands tour is your best bet.

4. Phang Nga Bay (James Bond Island & Koh Panyee)

Yes, James Bond island is a bit of a tourist trap. But the boat trip to get there is one of the world’s most scenic. So, to me, it’s still well worth the trip.

Bonus:   Most tours combine the trip to James Bond island with a fascinating stop at Koh Panyee .

James Bond Island

Made famous in the movie, “ The Man with the Golden Gun, ” James Bond island is one of Thailand’s most popular photo-ops. Though the movie places the location in China, Thailand is the island’s true home.

James Bond Island Phang Nga Bay Thailand

It’s an extremely frequent stop with the jam-packed tourist boats so the tiny island is pretty much always crawling with people. My advice? Get your photo op and savor the outstanding boat ride through Phang Nga Bay.

When three families set sail from Indonesia some 200 years ago in search of a new place to live, the vertical limestone cliffs of this tiny island hardly seemed a logical choice. But the first of these families were lured by the abundance of fish and raised a flag atop the cliff to signal the others – giving the island its name, Koh Panyee or the Island of the Flag.

Today, more than 1,400 people from 315 families call Koh Panyee home.

Krabi Thailand Day Trips

Over the years they have expanded their village to include hundreds of huts, restaurants, and houses built on stilts over the shallow sea, as well as a school, a mosque, and a health center.

While fishing was once the sole industry for these villagers, tourism now dominates the local economy. Restaurants overlooking the sea here are the typical stop for lunch when spending the day touring Phang Nga Bay.

Krabi to Phang Nga Bay by Tour

Options abound from the Krabi area for a leisurely day trip around beautiful Phang Nga Bay. This is one of my favorites:

Hong Island Private Longtail Boat

Island Hopping to James Bond Islands from Krabi with Speedboat

While this IS a speedboat tour, they limit the group size to a max of 17 people so it’s more of a “small group” tour than the larger speedboats. Plus the guide does a great job of staggering island visits to avoid most of the crowds. This full-day trip also includes lunch.

Krabi to Phang Nga Bay on Your Own

If you have a car and you’re up for an adventure, make the 90-minute drive to Phang Nga’s Surakul Pier.

There, you’ll find plenty of longtail boats available for hire for a tour of the bay. You can join another small group or hire your own longtail boat for the day as I did a few years ago on  Round the World #5 . It was a relaxing and affordable way to explore the bay and its top sights.

5. Koh Lanta

Originally settled by a nomadic clan of sea gypsies more than 500 years ago, today Koh Lanta still remains 95% Muslim lending it a more conservative culture than other parts of Thailand.

Stretching nearly 20 miles and boasting 11 white sand beaches, Lanta Yai is the main tourist destination in the archipelago. It’s also where most hotels and tourist facilities are located.

Koh Lanta Thailand

Koh Lanta is one of my favorite Thai islands. It’s less touristy than many others and is known for long stretches of empty beaches. So, in my opinion, it’s worth spending several days. But the island can be visited on a day trip from Krabi.

Tip:   If you do decide to spend a few days and you’re looking for a great hotel right on the beach, check out the   Lanta Castaway Resort .

Krabi to Koh Lanta by Tour

Most tours to “Koh Lanta” actually visit several of the small surrounding islands like Koh Rok and Koh Haa. Many also visit the stunning Emerald Cave on Koh Mook. Plan on a full day and several idyllic islands to explore.

Krabi to Koh Lanta on Your Own

Koh Lanta is easily accessible by speedboat or ferry. The ferry takes a little over 2 hours and can be crowded and uncomfortable during the high season.

Alternatively, from Krabi’s private speedboat dock, the journey takes just 15 minutes. Of course, that convenience costs more, but if you’re visiting just for the day, the time savings is definitely worth it.

Wrapping it up!

And there you have it, the 5 best island-hopping day trips you can’t miss when visiting the Province of Krabi.

So whether you’re looking for sunbathing, snorkeling, or just a day on the water exploring some of Thailand’s best islands, Krabi is the perfect launching point.

So, what to do and how to spend one day trip on Koh Phi Phi (Ko Phi Phi day trip) from Krabi (Koh Phi Phi day trip from Krabi) perfectly? Let’s check out our Koh Phi Phi blog (Koh Phi Phi travel blog) with our guides from how to get there, top things to do on Koh Phi Phi to find out the answer!

Best beaches in Thailand Laem Tong Beach — Koh Phi Phi (1)

Koh Phi Phi is not actually an isolated island but an archipelago off Phuket, a province in southern Thailand. However, to explore Koh Phi Phi, visitors do not often go to Phuket, but they will come Krabi first and then take the boat to the island. Known as where has one of the cleanest beaches in the world, Phi Phi Island consists of 6 islands with the main islands are Phi Phi Don, Phi Phi Leh, and Maya Bay. From the air looking down to the South, the islands of Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Leh are like two P character, so Westerners called PP and the locals called Phi Phi.

When we just arrived in Krabi, we bought ferry tickets at the airport, 700 Baht/round trip. But for some reason, when I search online, I thought that there was no boat in Phi Phi to Ao Nang, so I bought return tickets to get back to Krabi town, while I booked the hotel in Ao Nang. So, we have to spend a bit of money to get from Krabi to Ao Nang, but had to take a detour. The price of one-way tickets is also different because getting to Phi Phi – Krabi costs about 400 Baht while returning to Ao Nang only 300 Baht.

Koh Phi Phi day trip from Krabi: Take the ferry to the island

krabi day trip to phi phi

The speedboat takes us through the waves from Krabi to the island. Actually, the waves here are nothing compared to the waves when taking a public ferry in the Maldives, even though both are peaceful sea, calm water. My energetic nature still cannot be ignored, taking the ferry would not made me sit still and have to run around every corner to explore, visiting, see if there is anything special, and also to take pictures again. There are many Western visitors, almost backpackers, solo travelers on the ferry, so backpack traveling is popular trending in the world today, especially Thailand fertile land is the paradise for backpackers around the world.

krabi day trip to phi phi

Ferry Ticket (One Way) between Koh Phi Phi and Krabi

The ferry arrives at Phi Phi Don at 3pm, this is the main island among the islands of Koh Phi Phi. Blue sky without a cloud, the temperature is also hot. The first impression is that this island is so bustling, bustling right at the pier. Near the shore, I see all kinds of boats, from the typical Longtail boats in Thai waters to the medium-sized and large speedboats. The longtail boats lined up neatly look good on the eyes. The sea water is clear, seeing the bottom, so clean, and that’s reason why we not step up to the shore yet, there have been some people waiting to collect environmental money already. In general, this Thai land always wants money from visitors, these environmental fees are small, but when taking the 4 island tour, they collect quite much. They collect foreign guests a total of 200 Baht/guest while Thai people only pay several dozen Baht.

krabi day trip to phi phi

We quickly pulled our luggage to find our hotel that book through Booking.com in advance. What made me choose this Marine House ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) hotel is the good price compared to the common price but it’s located right in the center of the island, about 5 minutes walk from the pier. The room rates on the island are quite expensive, significantly more expensive than hotels in Krabi or Ao Nang. I have just been walking for a few minutes on the island and I was excited, the alleys, street corners are arranged and built in very western style, from the shops, hotels and restaurants along the road are built according to planning standards, clean, similar but still retain its own characteristics. Generally is extremely professional with an island specializing in tourism.

krabi day trip to phi phi

The first thing that caught my eye is the architecture of the Marine House, which looks more like a stilt house with two floors were built of wood, quite solid, in the middle is the very large hall and the rooms arranged around it. But the attitude of the staff is a minus point, there is no smile for the two guests who passed thousands of kilometers away to come here! The cold-faced receptionist held my passport and booking information, collected the money and gave the key, the end. Well, I don’t mind anymore, check-in and rest.

krabi day trip to phi phi

My room at the second floor, there is a bed and a bathroom. In general it is okay, only the toilet is not bright and eye-catching, “Well, you’ll get what you pay for”. After a short resting, we immediately run to the beach to play. The most beautiful beach in central Phi Phi is probably the beach opposite Tonsai pier, located on the other side of the island. Spread a wide towel that bring from the hotel onto the sand, bring some snacks and some chocolate milk bought from 7 Eleven on the island, so it was a romantic afternoon already.

White sand beach is quite smooth and beautiful, there are many tourists lying in the sun here. But it seems this sun exposure is only for western backpackers contraindicated for Asian girls to keep their skin white and smooth. Westerners are really happy, born is beautiful, white skin, they can sunbath everywhere to get honey skin. While Asians themselves are yellow skin and only wish to have a fair skin like them. Those are only girls, but I do not pay much attention to my skin, I like to be bare-headed and wear a sleeveless shirt, LOL.

krabi day trip to phi phi

In addition to white sand, this beach has many luxury hotels and resorts. Right behind my lying spot and also the most bustling hotel in this area, The Beacha Club Hotel ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) with a swimming pool overlooking the sea. I always see some western guys lying on the edge of the pool with beer bottles in hands are in the vibrant music spread to the beach. Or some resorts located on the cliff overlooking the sea as Phuphaya Seaview Resort ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) , Phi Phi Sea Sky Resort ( Agoda.com or Booking.com ) , living in the middle of nature, just waking up and you see the sea already.

In addition, you can refer to one of the best Airbnb in Koh Phi Phi : Stunning View Phi Phi Bungalow! at $39/night or phi phi villa resort at $82/night or Phi Phi Island The beacha club 1 superior room at $107/night.

Bamboo Island, Koh Phi Phi2

Phi Phi Island as well as Ao Nang, Krabi you will not see the sun slowly going down to the horizon at sunset. In Ao Nang, only in Railay Bay can expect to see the sunset completely, or if in Phi Phi you only can watch the sunset when climb to the top of the View Point, this place must be the next day I can go. After lying on the beach in the sun and taking pictures, we returned to the hotel to take a shower and then go to eat. On this island, the eateries and restaurants are not lacking, if you want to eat fresh seafood, the big restaurants always satisfy your taste. As for traditional Thai food, you can go to the market or in the center is also very much. We went into such a restaurant, this restaurant is a bit more special when on the wall with the scribbled lines covered, which are the words that tourists write on to mark to commemorate their trip to Phi Phi. Of course we also not forget to make some lines!

krabi day trip to phi phi

Evening on the island is super bustling with many vibrant bars no less Khao San or Sukhumwit area in Bangkok. In addition, at the coastal restaurants, there is fire dancing, or simply taking a walk to visit, sometimes stopping at a tattoo shop to admire the tattooists who are making works for guests. In Vietnam, the trend of tattooing with electric pen but here they mainly tattoo by bamboo tool. Westerners tattooed a lot, looking at them very relaxing, it seems that the Westerners are determined to stay on the island for many days, not like me only stay for 1 day and 1 night.

krabi day trip to phi phi

The whole island at night feels like a huge night market, souvenir, clothes, brocade weaving shops are everywhere. The center of the island is planned as a giant matrix with lots of small roads, alleys.. that make you feel like walking into an old quarter in Hanoi, vibrant and eye-catching without boring. Afterward, I went out to the beach again to watch people perform fire dancing and singing. The special thing is that there are many cats, small cats, big cats and fat cats on the island, I asked locals that why the island has so many cats, they just said it was like that before. Most cats look fat and clean, and they are lazy, they lie all day, chubby, but adorable!

krabi day trip to phi phi

Fried ice-cream rolls in Phi Phi is very delicious, although in Thailand has many places with fried ice-cream rolls, but in Phi Phi this must be said to be particularly delicious. Wandering around the island, I met such a shop, located in a quite deserted area, but the customers are very crowded. I lined up for a long time for my turn. Seeing they chopping up, kneading back and forth ingredients to make ice cream make me mouthwatering, there are many flavors to choose from, chocolate, corn, syrup, and strawberry strips above are even more attractive. The owner is very friendly too!

krabi day trip to phi phi

The island look so small, but I have to spend whole evening to walking to explore all the roads, alleys and corners on the island. The later the island gets more and more bustling and vibrant, because it’s time to begin nightlife in the bars. Live music bars, small bars, big bars, and even boxing, Muay Thai is extremely vibrant but just passing through it feels like the heart is racing, it’s hard to resist the attraction of vibrant. The Westerners seem to go to the island to reduce stress, so I see no one seems to come to the island for the purpose of relaxation, to go to the island to drink, to dance, “dancing”, “have a drink” is a catchphrase of most of guys here. Sitting and chatting with these guys for a while, but they will go to the bars at 10 or 11 o’clock.

Thai Boxing In Koh Phi pHi

“Would you like something to drink?” “Come on, let’s go!”

Even the people I didn’t talk to, but seeing me, they also drag me out to drink, so it was true that everywhere is home, every people is friend when you are backpacker. Regardless of the nation, color or from anywhere, talk about everything in any topic, ask about each other’s trips, places that each person has experienced, about life, work, everything in comfortable way. So fun!

Koh Phi Phi blog: Early in the morning on the top of Viewpoint

Koh Phi Phi, Thailand

4 am, drowsy because sleep was not enough after playing hard last night. But I still tried to wake myself up for the purpose of this sunrise shooting at the top of the Viewpoint in Phi Phi. It is said that Phi Phi has 3 viewpoint, the highest viewpoint is viewpoint 3, and also the hardest to reach here. Waking up and carrying tools alone, the whole island was still asleep after a noisy night of playing. The alleyways are still very bright with lights, but to the foot of the mountain, the starting point with the long stairs to the top is not like that anymore. It was all dark, and I follow through such steps, somewhere are houses, hotels, resorts, but there were also places with only trees. The surroundings were pitch black, my hands always had to turn on the flash of my phone to navigate the road. Sweat started to flow like a shower …

krabi day trip to phi phi

Before reaching the top of the viewpoint 1, there is a barrier blocking the path, so this is the ticket gate to get to the viewpoint. Of course there’s no one here to sell tickets now, so I walked over and went on. Viewpoint 1 is located at the lowest position, able to see a part of Phi Phi but is not very clear. I stay here few minutes and then I continued to the viewpoint 2. This point is quite close to the previous point, which is the place where visitors check-in the most because this area is quite large with big rocks. There is also a signboard that wrote “Koh Phi Phi Viewpoint” looks very stylish, take photo here is great with stunning views. But well, let it be, I just continue go to the top of viewpoint 3. Now this is a real challenge because the road is quite long but difficult to go. In fact, it is not too high compared to climbing some peaks in Vietnam like Yen Tu mountain path, but I’m losing strength for the other two viewpoints below and going alone should be a bit lazy. Close to the top, without any step, It only is a dirty road, so if you intends to climb like me, bring shoes for easy climbing.

krabi day trip to phi phi

The highest Viewpoint 3, which is a fairly large yard and has a small house there, seems to let someone stay and watch this place. Step into the yard with the sign to leave the shoes outside because the yard is quite clean. From here, you can clearly see Phi Phi with two separate white sand beaches on both sides, extremely majestic. The only thing is that the direction of the sun is the opposite, so if you want to watch the sun, perhaps it is better to go at sunset. Standing on the top, feeling the fresh air, slowly watching the island in the palm of your hand and slowly entering into a new day, is also very relaxed …

krabi day trip to phi phi

I started down the mountain, down to the viewpoint 1, some tourists were up there already. And then also inevitably be retrospectively collected tickets, before going up early, I’m not buy yet. 30 Baht for each person and there are people walking around to collect from each person. Meet a few guys who climb like me, every guy is strong with thick body. I met a friendly Middle Eastern Canadian guy, we got to know each other (mostly to take pictures for each other!), And then talk about everything. He is also very approachable and open, stay in Thailand for a month, showing all the photos in his phone of the places he visited. It is a true Westerner, really lucky and happy guy!

Koh Phi Phi, Thailand

After return to the hotel, we started packing, go to breakfast, then check-out. Of course I still sent my luggage at the hotel because my ferry back to Krabi departs in the afternoon. Going to the pier is also no less bustling than any bar, because here is the gathering point of all types of tours, buying tickets for boats to the neighboring islands and bays. Try going to Maya Bay to play because it’s quite close, but the longtail boat tickets are also cheap, around 150 Baht/way. In general, it is very convenient to go between islands here, there are always longtail boats everywhere, you can buy one way ticket because there are always longtail boats docked in the bay already. You can imagine the longtail boat here is like the waterbus in Venice. Maya Bay is a fairly enclosed bay, calm and clear to the bottom. The beach is also beautiful with surrounding limestone mountains, it’s hard to compare to paradise like the Maldives but it can be said that each place has a different beauty depending on how you feel.

krabi thailand things to do

Playing through the morning, until early afternoon is also the time when high-speed ferry runs from Phi Phi to Krabi. Goodbye to the beautiful and vibrant island, if given a choice to return I may still want to go to Phi Phi again, feel more, visit more neighboring islands, and live more with the island. This is not an normal island, but a symbol of overcoming difficulties and challenges, because Phi Phi itsself decades ago was a deserted place when it was attack by a tsunami disaster. But only a short time later, it returned to itsself and even more beautiful. Goodbye Phi Phi …

FAQs About Phuket to Phi Phi Tours

Phi Phi tours range from $50 to $150 for a shared boat, while private boats can cost around $1000 for 15 people. But this is just an average.

To reach Phi Phi from Phuket , you can take a ferry or speedboat. Ferries are more affordable but slower, taking about 2 hours. Speedboats are faster, taking around 45 minutes to 1 hour. Both options are readily available and can be booked through a operator or at the pier yourself.

While a day trip to Phi Phi Island can give you a taste of its beauty and attractions, I recommend spending at least an overnight if you have the time. If you have only one day, visit popular spots like Maya Bay, Monkey Beach, and the Viewpoint.

Yes, a Phuket to Phi Phi day trip is definitely worth it. It’s known for its limestone cliffs, crystal clear water, coral reefs, and vibrant marine life. You can go snorkeling, swimming, sunbathing, and exploring iconic locations like Maya Bay.

Phi Phi can be a bit pricey compared to other spots in Thailand, especially for places to stay and things to do. But there are choices for every budget, so you’ll find both fancy and affordable options.

The best time to visit Phi Phi Island is during the dry season, from November to April. The weather is usually sunny with minimal rainfall, perfect for beach activities and exploring. However, this is peak season, so expect bigger crowds and higher prices. For a quieter but wetter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons of May to October.

Phuket is a tourist hub of activities and vibrant nightlife. It’s a place with endless options. In contrast, Phi Phi is smaller and more relaxed, known for its natural beauty. If you want more of a city vibe, choose Phuket. For a serene getaway, Phi Phi is perfect.

Swimming in the archipelago is generally considered safe, but be aware of the tides and currents, especially during certain seasons when the sea conditions can change. Swim in designated swimming areas and avoid areas with strong waves or dangerous rocks.

Final Thoughts: Best Phi Phi Island Tour

Phi Phi and the whole area around Phuket (like Krabi & Railay Beach, Khao Lak, Khao Sok National Park, and smaller islands like Koh Phayam ) are seriously amazing spots in Southeast Asia .

With towering karst cliffs and clear turquoise waters, these places are a must-visit on any Thailand itinerary. Aside from Phi Phi Don, you’ll need to join a tour to explore the other destinations.
