Kuranda Skyrail & Scenic Rail Experience From Cairns Itinerary

Just 25 km northwest of Cairns in Queensland’s tropical north, Kuranda is a village surrounded by rainforest rich in life. The oldest tropical rainforest anywhere in the world, its attractions are not only natural but also cultural. To do them the justice they deserve look no further than our Kuranda Tour! Explore this quirky town and its stunning natural attractions via the unique Skyrail and Scenic Railway on our trip from Cairns.

The day begins with hotel pickup mid-morning in the state’s far north. After a quick bus trip, you’ll have the chance to be suspended high above the forest canopy in a gondola of the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway. Your ticket allows you to temporarily alight at its Red Peak and Barron Falls stations, taking in the beautiful scenery.

At Freshwater Station, on the opposite side of Mount Whitfield Conservation Park to central Cairns, jump straight aboard the carriages of the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Take your pick of the best seats, without having to queue for tickets, which have already been organized for you.

From its windows, you’ll be able to experience a journey first taken in 1891. It will take you through the stunning beauty of Barron Gorge to the heart of the tree-clad Macalister Mountains at Kuranda. Stretching for 37 km and lasting just under two hours, you’ll not only cross the stream of Stony Creek Falls, but also come face to face with Surprise Falls and Barron Falls with a pause at a dedicated lookout.

Your tour continues with around three and a half hours of free time to explore all Kuranda has to offer. Having admired the art and handicrafts available at the stalls of the Heritage Market, you may like to add-on a trip to Kuranda Koala Gardens, one of the few places in Queensland where it’s possible to hold these icons of Australia.

Kuranda Scenic Railway

The year was 1882 and the residents of the tin mining settlement, Herberton, had a serious problem – they were facing starvation! Due to constant flooding, the settlement was unable to bring in supplies from nearby supply towns, so it was decided that a railway needed to be built as soon as practical. Bushman, Christie Palmerston, was selected to map out a suitable route for the new line and the then premier, Sir Samuel Griffiths, was given the honour of turning the first sod when construction finally began in 1886.

The rail line – which stretched to Mareeba through the Atherton Tablelands – was to be built in three stages, with lengths of 13.2 km, 24.5 km, and 37.4 km. All three stages – a total of 75.1 km – were full of challenges, but the middle section was particularly arduous and harrowing, with Indigenous opposition, sheer inclines and dense rainforest creating barriers to completion. Despite these challenges – and with absolutely no modern equipment – 2.3 million metres of earthwork, 93 curves, 15 tunnels and a multitude of bridges were created to complete the line. Celebrations were held and the track was finally declared open in June of 1891, changing the lives of the people it gave access to forever.

These days, the Kuranda Scenic Railway is primarily used to provide visitor access to the quaint village of Kuranda. The iconic railway meanders for almost two hours through thick, lush World Heritage Listed rainforest, deep ravines and sparkling waterfalls on its way from Cairns to Kuranda, giving its passengers a view of Tropical North Queensland’s true beauty. While the old steam engine has been replaced by a modern diesel model, the carriages themselves are authentically refurbished redwood heritage carriages, recalling the lavish style of train travel in the early 1900s. Kuranda Village itself is full of an assortment of interesting attractions, artistic residents and plenty of old-world charm.

The Kuranda Scenic Railway is an experience you’ll definitely not want to miss and the views are simply stunning. Don’t forget your camera!

Cairns to Kuranda by train, plus more scenic routes that don't cost a fortune

Posted: 7 November 2023 | Last updated: 15 March 2024

Slow and relaxing, train travel is one of the best ways of getting around if you have the time to spare. Some of the most breathtaking views in the world can be enjoyed from behind a train window and you don't necessarily have to shell out the big bucks for an epic ride. Here we take a look at the world's most scenic train journeys that you won't have to splash out on.

Christchurch to Greymouth, New Zealand

Taking in some of New Zealand's most dramatic landscapes, the TranzAlpine route from Christchurch to Greymouth travels through some of the most incredible sights on the South Island. The train crosses the Canterbury Plains and travels alongside the Waimakariri River before ascending into the mountains where it crosses the Staircase Viaduct. One-way fares start from £116 ($142) and all the seats line up with the huge panoramic windows and roof skylights.

Perhaps one of the most stunning features along the TranzAlpine's route is traversing the snow-capped mountains of Arthur's Pass National Park. The scenery then quickly turns subtropical as the train continues its journey through the west coast's rainforests and one of the best experiences on the train is stepping out on the open-air viewing car.

Glasgow to Mallaig, Scotland, UK

Dubbed Britain's most scenic train route, the West Highland Line runs from the Scottish city of Glasgow to Fort William before continuing its journey towards the port of Mallaig. The journey traverses the Scottish Highlands' epic landscape and passes through the remote wilderness of Rannoch Moor. After a brief stop in Fort William, the train crosses the Glenfinnan Viaduct – the same bridge the Hogwarts Express crosses in the Harry Potter films.

For an even more authentic Harry Potter experience, there's The Jacobite steam train – it's the one used in the films. This year the train is scheduled to run Monday to Friday from early April to late October between Fort William and Mallaig. A standard adult return ticket costs £57 ($69). Otherwise, regular ScotRail trains between Glasgow and Mallaig run every day and a one-way off-peak fare is around £29 ($35).

Built by the British in the late 1800s, Sri Lanka's rail system was originally used to transport tea and coffee for export so it's no surprise that this seven-hour trip takes passengers through stunning tea plantations, remote villages, lush green hills and tumbling waterfalls. If travelling from Kandy, know that the better views are from the seats on the right.

Kandy to Ella, Sri Lanka

One-way tickets from Colombo's Fort station to Kandy cost around £2 ($2.40) for a third-class reserved seat and £5 ($6) for a first-class ticket in an air-conditioned car. The train makes several stops along the way where locals sell fresh fruit and snacks right by the tracks.

Flam to Myrdal, Norway

Often described as one of the most beautiful train rides in the world, this journey is just under two hours and takes in some of the most beautiful scenery Norway has to offer. The Flåm Railway travels from sea level at the Sognefjord in Flåm to the Myrdal mountain station, 2,841 feet (866m) above sea level.

Passing deep ravines, cascading waterfalls and towering peaks, the journey is equally stunning in both summer and winter, when a blanket of snow turns the green landscape into a winter wonderland. The Flåm Railway connects with trains running between Oslo and Bergen, and round-trip fares start from £38 ($46).

Williams to Grand Canyon Village, Arizona, USA

The trip on the Grand Canyon Railway begins in Williams, a small town 30 miles (48km) west of Flagstaff. Meandering its way through ponderosa pine forests and open prairie, the train terminates in Grand Canyon Village on the South Rim of the Grand Canyon National Park before heading back to Williams. On the way, passengers are encouraged to get into the spirit of the Old West and enjoy the musical entertainment, cowboy characters and other surprises.

Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, Vietnam

When travelling on The Reunification Express line (also known as the North-South Railway) you don't have to choose between seeing historic cities, charming towns and spectacular coastline – this journey has it all. Traversing more than a thousand miles between Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City in the south, the route is one of Asia's most popular train rides. The full journey takes over two days but you can hop on and off at destinations like Hue and Da Nang.

A trip on this train takes in breathtaking Vietnamese landscapes like Hải Vân Pass, Vân Phong Bay and the Annamite Range. Peru is filled with exciting train journeys from the luxurious Belmond Andean Explorer to the much-loved tourist route between Cusco and Machu Picchu. For an unusual (and a more wallet-friendly) experience, travellers should choose the Ferrovías Central railway. Transporting passengers from Lima to Huancayo, the charming capital of Peru's central highlands, it's the second-highest passenger train in the world reaching a height of almost 16,000 feet (4,782m) as it travels through the Andes.

5 Natural Wonders to Explore From Cairns

Tully Hole, Cairns

For a road trip featuring incredible landscapes at almost every turn, Cairns is calling. The heart of Queensland’s tropical north has some of the country’s most spectacular natural wonders within easy driving distance, so you’ll have plenty of time for rock-pool soaking, trail navigating and wildlife spotting along the way. With so much to explore, the best way to navigate this patch of paradise is on four wheels. Hire a car with Avis at Cairns airport, and if you complete Avis PreCheck before you arrive, you can get on the road to start your adventure quicker. Here’s our pick of the best places to visit on your journey through the region.

Spot turtles at Palm Cove

Palm Cove

This palm-fringed beach was just named one of the world’s best, so it’s well worth the 30-minute drive from the airport to lay beneath its iconic coconut trees. Spend your day swimming and strolling along the two-kilometre stretch of sand, or book a kayak with Pacific Watersports to nearby Double Island and keep a lookout for green sea turtles and eagle rays.

A long lunch is best enjoyed beachside at Nu Nu Restaurant , where you can sample their famous wok-fried chilli mud crab laksa. For something more casual, order a takeaway lime pepper calamari and prawn tacos from Lucky Fish .

Swim among the Babinda Boulders

Babinda Boulders

Drive 55 minutes south along the Bruce Highway from Cairns through sugar cane fields, banana farms and ancient rainforest to find the undulating rock formations and emerald green waters of Babinda Boulders – a spiritual and sacred area to the Yidinji people. Here you can swim (these tropical creeks are fast-flowing so water safety is essential), stretch your legs on a 1.3-kilometre return walk to the Devil’s Pool Lookout and then settle in with a picnic spread alongside the swimming hole.

If you’re low on lunch supplies, stop at Babinda Bakery on the way to pick up a pie or one of its decadent cream buns.

Break a sweat summiting Walshs Pyramid

Walsj Pyramid

Head 25 kilometres south of Cairns to discover this 922-metre-tall pyramid-esque peak, which rewards hikers with 360-degree views of the region. The challenging six-kilometre trail will take five to six hours to complete, with steep and rocky sections interspersed with suitable spots to pause and overlook the surrounding ranges.

If you’re heading out on a weekend, fill your backpack with tropical fruit and snacks at Cairns’ Rusty’s Markets – it’s open Friday, Saturday and Sunday – and cool off with a post-hike swim at Behana Gorge, which is less than a 10-minute drive from the bottom of the mountain.

Earn 4 Qantas Points per $1 spent on Avis rentals in Australia. You can also use Qantas Points to book your car .

Get blown away by Din Din (Barron Falls)

Skyraill

Barron Gorge National Park, 45 minutes from Cairns, is a must-visit, especially in the wet season from November to March as 265,000 megalitres of water crash over the 250-metre falls. Feel the cool mist as it drifts on the breeze from the viewpoint on the 1.2-kilometre return track, get a bird’s-eye view of the spectacular sight on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway or go the long way around on the historic Kuranda Scenic Railway.

Make a pit stop in the nearby village of Kuranda to refuel at Frogs Restaurant (you can’t go past the barra and tamarind curry) before spotting one of the region’s most iconic residents, the southern cassowary, at Birdworld .

Explore the Daintree Rainforest

Daintree Rainforest

A trip to Far North Queensland isn’t complete without exploring the World Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest – and Mossman Gorge is one of the best places to start. From Cairns, follow the Great Barrier Reef Drive north for 77 kilometres – take in spectacular views over the sparkling coast along the way – until you reach Mossman Gorge Cultural Centre .

Here you can tick off the ultimate outdoor to-do list: dip in crystal-clear rockpools (the area is considered generally safe from crocs), take in the spectacular Cassowary Falls and wander through the 135-million-year-old rainforest. You can also join a guided Ngadiku Dreamtime Walk led by the local First Nations community who share their knowledge about the region’s flora and fauna.

Avis PreCheck ™ is a digital check-in which helps to streamline your car pick-up process. By pre-adding your Driver’s Licence and method of payment details to your Avis reservation, you can breeze through pick up, saving time at the counter.
