Pro-Palestinian demonstrators block traffic into Chicago airport, causing headaches for travelers

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators blocked a freeway leading to three Chicago O'Hare International Airport terminals Monday morning, temporarily stopping vehicle traffic into one of the nation's busiest airports and causing headaches for travelers.

Protesters linked arms and blocked lanes of Interstate 190 around 7 a.m., a demonstration they said was part of a global “economic blockade to free Palestine,” according to Rifqa Falaneh, one of the organizers. Traffic in the San Francisco Bay Area was also snarled for hours Monday morning as pro-Palestinian demonstrators shut down both directions of the Golden Gate Bridge and stalled a 17-mile (27-kilometer) stretch of Interstate 880 in Oakland.

O'Hare warned travelers on the social platform X to take alternative forms of transportation with car travel “substantially delayed this morning due to protest activity.”

Some travelers stuck in standstill traffic left their cars and walked the final leg to the airport along the freeway, trailing their luggage behind them.

Among them was Madeline Hannan from suburban Chicago. She was headed to O'Hare for a work trip to Florida when her and her husband's car ended up stalled for 20 minutes. She got out and “both ran and speed walked” more than 1 mile. She said she made it to the gate on time, but barely.

“This was an inconvenience,” she said in a telephone interview from Florida. “But in the grand scheme of things going on overseas, it’s a minor inconvenience.”

While individual travelers may have been affected, operations at the airport appeared near normal with delays of under 15 minutes, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation.

Inbound traffic toward O’Hare resumed around 9 a.m.

On the Golden Gate Bridge in California, a small number of demonstrators stood by, as did police. Some protesters held a black banner that read “Stop the world for Gaza.” The iconic bridge was closed off to all auto traffic, bicyclists and pedestrians.

In Chicago, dozens of protesters were arrested, according to Falaneh. Chicago police said Monday that “multiple people” were taken into custody after a protest where people obstructed traffic but did not have a detailed count.

Protesters say they chose the location, in part, because O’Hare is one of the largest airports. Among other things, they’ve called for an immediate ceasefire in the war between Israel and Hamas .

Anti- war protesters have demonstrated in Chicago near daily since Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack on southern Israel that killed around 1,200 people. Israeli warplanes and ground troops have conducted a scorched-earth campaign on the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli offensive has killed more than 33,700 Palestinians, according to the Gaza health ministry. The ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count but says women and children make up two-thirds of the dead.

World's busiest airports show surge in international travel. Here are the rankings

By leslie josephs,cnbc • published april 15, 2024 • updated 5 hours ago.

  • Airports in Tokyo and London jumped in the rankings as international travel returned last year.
  • Domestic U.S. airports had become more popular during the pandemic amid international travel restrictions.
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport once again topped the list as the world's busiest airport.

International travel roared back last year, pushing airports from London to Tokyo up in a global ranking of passenger traffic.

24/7 Chicago news stream: Watch NBC 5 free wherever you are

Dubai International Airport ranked as the second busiest in 2023, up from fifth place in 2022 and fourth place in 2019, according to Airports Council International's preliminary ranking, which was released on Monday. Passenger traffic to Tokyo Haneda International Airport jumped 55% last year from 2022, and the airport ranked fifth, up from 16th place a year earlier.

Global airports served 8.5 billion passengers last year, up 27% from 2022 but still about 6% below pre-pandemic counts, ACI said, citing preliminary figures.

The resurgence of international travel has been a bright spot for airlines with big international networks, while ultra-low-cost, domestic-focused U.S. airlines have struggled in recent months. Domestic U.S. airports continued to post big gains in passenger counts, but some slipped in the rankings compared with the middle of the pandemic , when international travel restrictions limited long-haul trips abroad.

Nearly 78 million people used Denver International Airport last year, up 12% from 2022, but the airport, a major hub of United Airlines , fell in ACI's ranking to sixth place from third.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, Delta Air Lines ' biggest hub, once again topped the list of the busiest airports, serving 104.7 million passengers, ACI said.

Here are the 2023 rankings (with 2022 rankings in parentheses):

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (1)
  • Dubai International Airport (5)
  • Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (2)
  • London Heathrow (8)
  • Tokyo Haneda International Airport (16)
  • Denver International Airport (3)

U.S. issues travel warning for Israel with Iran attack believed to be imminent and fear Gaza war could spread

By Debora Patta , Tucker Reals

Updated on: April 13, 2024 / 5:25 PM EDT / CBS News

Update: Iran launched drone attacks against Israel on Saturday. Read CBS News'  latest coverage here .

Tel Aviv  — Israel is bracing for a worst-case scenario that U.S. officials believe could materialize within just hours — the possibility of a direct attack on Israeli soil by Iran in retaliation for a strike almost two weeks ago that killed seven Iranian military officers. Iran has vowed to take revenge for Israel killing its commanders, who were hit by an April 1 strike on the Iranian embassy in Syria's capital.

Two U.S. officials told CBS News that a major Iranian attack against Israel was expected as soon as Friday, possibly to include more than 100 drones and dozens of missiles aimed at military targets inside the country. Sources have told CBS News the retaliation could include attacks carried out both by Iranian forces, and proxy groups around the region that it has been funneling additional arms to for weeks.

The officials said it would be challenging for the Israelis to defend against an attack of that magnitude, and while they held out the possibility that the Iranians could opt for a smaller-scale attack to avoid a dramatic escalation, their retaliation was believed to be imminent.

Asked Friday how imminent he believes an attack is, President Biden responded, "I don't want to get into secure information, but my expectation is sooner than later." The president urged Iran not to move forward, saying his message to Tehran was: "Don't."

Tehran has not indicated publicly how or when it will return fire, so it's unclear how far Iran's leaders will go. If they decide to carry out a direct attack on Israel, there's fear it could blow Israel's ongoing war against Iranian ally Hamas up into a much wider regional conflict.

With the Iranian retaliation expected at any time, the U.S. State Department on Thursday warned Americans in Israel not to travel outside major cities, which are better protected from incoming rocket fire by the country's Iron Dome missile defense system. The latest guidance noted that travel by U.S. government employees in Israel could be further restricted with little notice as things develop in the tinderbox region.

"Whoever harms us, we will harm them," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed Thursday as he visited troops at an Israel Defense Forces airbase. "We are prepared … both defensively and offensively."

Iran-Burning Flags Of The U.S. And Israel

On Saturday, all U.S. embassies in the Middle East were put on high alert and required to hold emergency action committee meetings. Diplomats in Lebanon and Israel were specifically told not to travel to certain areas within those countries.

Sima Shine, a security expert and former official with Israel's national intelligence agency Mossad, told CBS News it was a dangerous moment for the region, and the "most worried" she has been. She said anxiety over an all-out war was likely just as high "on both sides, in Israel and in Iran."

If Iran does choose to strike Israel directly, it could involve a complex missile and drone attack similar to the one Iranian forces launched against a Saudi oil facility in 2019 .

"They will try to do it on the military or some military asset," Shine predicted. "But the question will be the damage. If there would be many injured people, killed or injured … I think it has the potential for a huge escalation."

Iran- International Jerusalem Day Rally In Tehran

Shine stressed, however, that she still believes neither side actually wants a regional conflict.

U.S. "really trying to avoid war"

The U.S. sent a senior general to Israel this week to coordinate with the close American ally on any response it might make to an Iranian attack. Speaking Friday on "CBS Mornings," America's top military officer said, "we're really trying to avoid war."

"This is part of the dialogue that I have with my counterparts within the region, to include the Israeli chief of defense, who I talked to yesterday," said Joint Chiefs chairman Gen. Charles Q. Brown, Jr., adding that the U.S. military was "doing things not only to prevent a war, but at the same time, one of my primary things is to make sure all the forces in the region are protected."

"My role, as the chairman of the Joint Chiefs, is to plan and prepare," Brown said. "That's one thing we do very well."

Brown's Israeli counterpart, Chief of the General Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, "completed a comprehensive situational assessment on the readiness of the IDF for all scenarios," Israel's military said Friday.

"The IDF is very strongly prepared, both offensively and defensively, against any threat," Halevi was quoted as saying in the statement. "The IDF continues to monitor closely what is happening in Iran and different arenas, constantly preparing to deal with existing and potential threats in coordination with the United States Armed Forces."

The IDF said the visiting U.S. general, Central Command chief Gen. Michael Erik Kurilla, was taking part in the IDF's situational assessment.

The dilemma for Iran, said Israeli expert Shine, is to figure out how to deliver its promised response to Israel's attack in Syria, but in a way that does not lead to further escalation. Likewise, Shine said Israel could choose to show restraint when it responds to whatever Iran eventually does.

If either side gets the balance wrong, the consequences for the region, and even the world, could be dire.

Weijia Jiang, David Martin, Margaret Brennan and Olivia Gazis contributed reporting.

The Midwest Now Has a New Nonstop Flight to Rome

ITA Airways, Italy’s main airline, launched new service connecting Chicago and Rome.

kwik travel chicago

Alessandra Amodio/Travel + Leisure

A visit from the Windy City to the City of Seven Hills just got easier. On Sunday, ITA Airways, Italy’s main airline, launched new service connecting Chicago and Rome. The route will initially operate six times a week, and will soon increase to seven times a week in June, the airline shared in a press release. The 9 hour and 20 minute flight will depart Chicago's O'Hare International Airport at 3:00 p.m. and arrives in Rome's Leonardo da Vinci–Fiumicino Airport at 7:20 a.m. the next morning. The route will operate with three different cabins (Business, Premium Economy, and Economy) on an Airbus A330neo aircraft.

Tickets for future flights are now available on ITA's website . "This new destination, the seventh in North America, further enriches the intercontinental network of ITA Airways and consolidates our expansion towards the United States, which is the first international market for our Company,” ITA Airways' Chief Commercial Officer Emiliana Limosani said in a statement. ITA Airways is a part of the SkyTeam Alliance loyalty program which allows travelers to redeem or earn miles from other member airlines including Delta. Contrarily, Chicago’s O’Hare is a large hub for United Airlines, a member of the competing Star Alliance network, which operates multiple flights to Italy.

The new Chicago route is an expansion of the airline’s' presence across North America. During the peak summer travel season, ITA will operate 140 weekly flights between North America and Italy.

Travelers on ITA will immediately feel immersed in Italian culture upon boarding as its aircrafts' interiors are designed by car designer Walter De Silva, and crew uniforms styled and designed by the famed Italian fashion house Brunello Cucinelli. Its in-flight menu is also by Italian chefs.

Rome was recently ranked as one of the top five most popular summer destinations of 2024, according to Google Flight data . American Airlines also recently announced its largest schedule to Italy this summer, also with daily service to Rome from Chicago.

Things To Do

“Dune: Part Two” actor Babs Olusanmokun said he loved his years living in Brazil, thanks to the amazing music and culture.

Babs Olusanmokun is having an incredible year. After returning to the “Dune” franchise as Jamis in “Dune: Part Two,” the actor will next be seen in Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare”, which opens in theaters on April 19. The Nigerian American actor is also a cast member of the “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds” series, portraying Dr. Joseph M’Benga. One of the perks of his job is filming on location, he told us: “For ‘The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare,’ we shot in Turkey and England. Turkey was so fun and welcoming. It’s such a huge country.”

Q: What does shooting on location provide you as an actor?

A: It brings a certain authenticity that’s very difficult to capture in a studio. [For instance] on Jeymes Samuel’s “The Book of Clarence” we shot in Matera, Southern Italy. Such a stunning place! Matera is one of the longest continuously inhabited places on earth. We’re talking thousands of years. I was in awe anytime I walked around.

Q: How do you maintain your health while working almost nonstop?

A: It’s been busy in a really good way for me. You won’t catch me complaining! I always make an effort to keep it together health wise wherever I am in the world. I make use of the hotel gym at least four days a week. If not, I go for runs outside or even do cardio in the hotel room. I’m a stickler for fitness. As for nutrition, I start with hydrating with water consistently during the course of the day. Then I simply make sure I eat well also. I’ve been lucky with the quality of healthy food in the various locations I’ve worked at so far.

Q: Where did you shoot the “Dune” films?

A: For “Dune,” I shot initially in Budapest, which is quite wonderful architecturally. The city is also very welcoming. They’ve got grand boulevards and the Danube River running through demarcating the hilly Buda and lower plain Pest – hence Budapest. Budapest also has some very good restaurants. I shot the bigger chunk of my role in “Dune” in Jordan. The majestic desert of Wadi Rum, also the shooting location for films like “The Martian.” It was a real blessing to be working in that incredible natural setting. Words can’t really convey its beauty. I also found myself in the desert of the United Arab Emirates, between Dubai and Abu Dhabi for “Dune: Part Two.” What a beautiful landscape. Such glorious sand dunes!

Q: What is your favorite vacation destination?

A: I’d say my favorite vacation spot is the South of France. It’s got great weather and unbelievable cuisine.

Q: As the son of a diplomat, I understand that you grew up around the world. How did that affect you?

A: It was really wonderful growing up like that. I think I just took it in stride as a kid and simply enjoyed it. I was always up for the adventure of traveling even though you do have that constant restart and discovery of new relationships. I’m a lot more appreciative of the experiences now as an adult, of course. But even as a kid, I sensed it was something of a privilege. It was special to make friends from literally all over this world of ours. Very grateful for it all.

Q: Did you study Brazilian jiu-jitsu when you lived in Brazil?

A: I actually only started training when I moved from Brazil to New York City after high school. I was still more of a karate kid in Brazil. [Laughs.] I’ve been a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt for a long while now. It’s an incredible art form that I hold dear.

Q: What would you like people to know about Nigeria?

A: Lagos, where I was born, is vast and quite fast paced. Lots of people are working hard to make a better life for themselves. Lots of Nigerian artists – musicians especially – have gone global. Lagos is where you can go and listen to them on their way up.

Q: What was a trip you took as a child that stands out?

A: I did a school trip to a place called Mont-Saint-Michel. It’s this very old walled city in Normandy, France. It was quite magical. It’s a tidal island. I remember it being the first time I learned about quicksands and the danger of it.

Q: What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from your travels?

A: That people can be different, yet so familiar at the same time. That regardless of how much we differentiate ourselves, we still have a commonality with other cultures that we should take note of. Pretty much, don’t be narrow-minded. It will simply keep you small.

Q: Where are your favorite weekend getaways?

A: The Berkshires and Paris.

Q: Do you speak any foreign languages?

A: I speak Yoruba, Brazilian Portuguese, French and some Spanish.

Q: What are your five favorite cities

A: Paris, New York, Lagos, London, Cape Town.

Q: Where would you like to go that you have never been to before?

A: I’d love to visit Japan – and Asia in general.

Q: What kind of research do you do before you go away on a trip?

A: If it’s a city, I will look for interesting neighborhoods and good restaurants.
