Sake Tasting and Brewery Tours in Kyoto

Kyoto has a reputation for producing high-quality sake which continues to this day.

The Kyoto district of Fushimi is famous throughout Japan for brewing sake. Visitors to the Fushimi Inari shrine would be wise to take a sake tasting and brewery tour.

Plenty of clean water from its underground springs is the foundation of Fushimi’s sake. Today almost 40 breweries exist. The district has retained its character through the preservation of old brewery buildings.

A sake tasting and brewery tour in Kyoto is a journey itself to the heart of Japanese culture.

Fushimi Sake District

kyoto brewery tour

The Fushimi Sake District () is a charming, traditional sake brewing district along the willow-lined Horikawa River in southern Kyoto . Revered for the clean, soft water that flows in abundance from the river's underground springs, the district is home to nearly 40 sake breweries. Alongside Kobe 's Nada District , Fushimi has been a leading sake brewing district in the country for many centuries.

Among the local breweries is industry giant Gekkeikan which was founded here in 1637 . Many of the district's buildings preserve their traditional appearance with wood and white-plaster walls. A few of the breweries in the area are open to the public and offer shops where you can taste and purchase their products (including some exclusive items not available elsewhere), restaurants and museums.

Fushimi grew during the Azuchi-Momoyama Period at the base of Fushimi Castle (on Momoyama Hill after which the period was named), the retirement palace of Toyotomi Hideyoshi , the contemporary ruler of Japan. It flourished as a sake production site thanks to its strategic shipping location at the junction of two rivers, the availability of good water and the high demand for alcoholic beverages by the inhabitants of the castle and its town.

A few hundred years later, in the waning years of the Edo Period , Fushimi became a venue for the preparations and a battle leading to the Meiji Restoration . Sakamoto Ryoma, one of the most famous proponents of the restoration, frequented the local Teradaya Inn where he barely survived an attack on his life on one occasion. The inn was rebuilt since. It stands near the sake breweries and is open to tourists for daytime viewing and overnight stays.

At Fushimi's prime as a shipping port, flat-bottom, wooden boats plied the rivers, moving goods to and from the castle town. Wooden boats can still be seen on the river, although these days they carry sightseeing cruise passengers rather than mercantile goods. Cruises depart from docks near the Gekkeikan Brewery and the Teradaya Inn. The cruises both go as far as the junction with the Uji River and take about 50 and 40 minutes respectively.

While you could always try it at a local restaurant, why not go all in and try one of the top Kyoto sake tasting tours out there today? Let’s dive right in!

Best Sake Tasting Tours in Kyoto

Quick answer: the 5 best kyoto sake tasting tours for 2024.

Kyoto Sake Tasting Tour Reviews

1. kyoto sake brewery & tasting walking tour.

  • Duration: 1.5 hours
  • Departure: Yoshijima Yaguracho, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-8224
  • Departure Time: 1:30 PM
  • Includes:  Sake tasting (18 types), photos, admission fee of Sake Museum, those under 20 years old will instead get snacks/food

I first discovered sake-tasting tours because I had an afternoon free and wanted to go on a more unique experience. That’s when I came across the Kyoto Sake Brewery & Tasting Walking Tour , which perfectly combines history, cool little coffee bars, and plenty of sake.

This is my top tour selection as it’s one of the best for the price, with seamless organization and tons of easy-to-consume information from the very get-go.

We met up with our guide in central Kyoto and the meeting place was luckily very easy to walk to from our hotel. Upon arrival, we saw that we already had a little group of fellow tourists from around the world going on, which made it even more fun.

Our guide was very sweet and friendly, and spoke perfect English, making it easy to understand everything he had to say.

The Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum is where we started off, where we learned so much about the history of the alcoholic beverage, and why it’s perfect to make in Kyoto.

We then learned about the different techniques surrounding the production before trying a huge range of different sake styles!

Expand To See More See Less

This tour offers the most tastings of any I’ve come across, though in a lesser quantity (to make sure you’re fine by the end of the tour!).

After that, we headed to a cool little local bar, where we were able to sample a few other sake varieties while learning more about these specific styles’ history and brewing processes.

I was also pleasantly surprised at the fact that our guide took professional photos throughout the tour, which we were able to have sent to us afterward for a fantastic memento.

Overall, this was a great tour all the way through, with plenty of handy facts that will help me select the perfect sake, no matter where I am.

  • Duration:  3 hours
  • Departure: 247 Minamihamachō, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-8660
  • Departure Time: 10:00 AM, 1:00 PM, 3:00 PM
  • Includes:  English-speaking local guide, 10 sake tastings, snacks for sake pairing, cheat sheet + tasting notes

This next tour is yet another one of those “biggest bang for your buck” options, highlighting the history and culture of sake-brewing, locally.

The 3 Hours Kyoto Insider Sake Experience  is ideal if you’re looking to gain a better understanding of where sake originated, the culture surrounding it, and the different types. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or it’s your first time trying the beverage, I know you’re going to love it as much as I do!

We met our guide right outside the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, which is a relatively small yet very charming place that is worth visiting on its own.

It’s very easy to get to from Fushimi Inari’s station, located in a tranquil neighborhood that offers insight into how locals live. We took a little stroll to the biggest sake brewery in Fushimi, where we gained in-depth knowledge of sake from professionals who know the beverage inside and out.

Starting off in the museum offered us some basic knowledge about the drink’s background before heading to the tasting, which was a more immersive experience and allowed us to learn quite a bit about the traditional brewing processes that have been in practice for centuries.

The production area is very interesting, and they did a great job of explaining what each piece was used for. We then got to see the older tools in the museum section of the building, which made a lot more sense after the tour.

After all the touring of the production area, we got to try tons of different samples of sake, from dry and more bitter to smooth and sweet. They even set up a thoughtful food pairing for us, where we tried traditional Japanese snacks to complement each sake type.

Overall, this was a super educational, fun experience and I learned much more than I ever thought possible in just a few hours!

3. 1.5 Hours Kyoto Insider Sake Experience

  • Departure: 271-1 Kurumamachi, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-8365
  • Includes:  Local English-speaking guide, 7 sake tastings, snacks

If you have a packed schedule and don’t have much free time, this next tour is the best option for you! The  1.5 Hours Kyoto Insider Sake Experience  may be relatively brief, but packed full of info with the opportunity to sample plenty of sake first-hand.

This was a great way for me to learn quite a bit about sake, making it one of the best “beginner” classes out there.

We met in Fushimi where we saw our guide and got to know the rest of our small group, which was fun to get to know others from around the world. I found it pretty easy to access, which was important for me as I was on a pretty big time crunch.

Not to mention, they have both an afternoon or evening tour departure option, making it even easier to add into a busy itinerary.

Our guide was very friendly and knowledgeable, answering any questions we threw at them and explaining things in a way that anyone could understand.

The Fushimi District is known worldwide for its top-notch sake production, and when you take into consideration its over 30 breweries, it makes sense.

While I’d love to check out each one, we learned a surprising amount in our sake-tasting workshop!

We all sat down and listened to our expert guide as we sampled 7 different sake varieties and learned which types were ideal for certain occasions and flavors.

This was only enhanced by the traditional Japanese food items paired nicely to each sample, with included cheat sheets there to help us. I actually still use the sheet while in Japan and outside the country while ordering sake!

4. Kyoto Sake Brewery Tour with Lunch

  • Duration:  n/a
  • Departure: 4-chōme-291 Ryōgaemachi, Fushimi Ward, Kyoto, 612-8082
  • Departure Time: 11:00 AM
  • Includes:  Several sake tastings, local lunch, English-speaking guide.

Tucked right into the breathtaking landscapes of Kyoto sits one of the biggest epicenters of sake brewing, categorized with attention to detail and traditions that have been passed on well over a few centuries.

If you’re looking to gain a deeper understanding of the country’s famous rice wine, the Kyoto Sake Brewery Tour with Lunch  is the perfect opportunity to check out this revered practice.

Led by knowledgeable guides, the immersive experience kickstart with a visit to various traditional sake breweries in some of Kyoto’s most historic neighborhoods.

We started off by exploring the Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, where we were able to casually stroll around while learning the basics about the historic tradition and methods of brewing rice wine.

The charming area is one of my favorites in Kyoto, lined with little shops selling fantastic artisanal creations. After the museum, we then visited a couple of different breweries – one small and one large – to gain some perspective on how the scale and individual sake production differs.

They operate in surprisingly different ways, with many different similarities in terms of production methods. Throughout both visits, we were able to sample plenty of different types of sake while learning about each one from our interesting guide.

My favorite part was sitting down for a delicious local lunch with Yakitori perfectly paired with sake while chatting with our guide and the others in our small group about what we’d seen and tried so far.

As if that weren’t enough, we also had time to walk around outside and see important temples, parks, and other Japanese landmarks! If you’re looking for one of the best beginner sake tastings and tours, look no further than this one!

5. 3-Hour Private Japanese Sake Breweries Tour in Fushimi Kyoto

  • Departure Time: 1:00 PM
  • Includes:  Snacks, alcoholic beverages, admission fee to Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum

Last but certainly not least, I bring you another 3-hour sake tasting experience that will teach you all about a wide variety of sake from current day to hundreds of years back.

If that sounds like fun to you, I highly suggest checking out the 3-Hour Private Japanese Sake Breweries Tour in Fushimi Tokyo . I absolutely love this tour for how well it goes into sake production while combining history and culture by exploring the unique Fushimi district.

Starting off at 1:00 pm, I will admit that it wasn’t the most convenient start time, but it’s still quite a fun way to explore and learn before dinnertime!

We started by meeting our guide and the rest of our small group outside the exit of the Keihan Railway North station, which was easy to access.

We then headed straight into the intriguing Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum, which has a gorgeous original wooden brewery construction made over 200 years ago!

Heading inside the museum, we got to learn about sake before heading out in the courtyard where we could sample Fushimizu straight from a well, which is the water used in brewing the rice wine.

It’s very soft, smooth, and tasty, and I was surprised at just how much I loved it (which observing traditional brewing tools, that were pretty cool!). We then boarded a “pleasure boat” which was used hundreds of years ago for logistics purposes between Fushimi and Osaka.

Next up is the impressive Fushimi Sake Village that’s been open for less than 10 years, but is essentially a playground for sake and Japanese food lovers!

With 17 breweries around here, you’ll get to sample plenty of 100% authentic Fushimi local sake that’s incredibly pure and unchanged. I didn’t know that the Kappa Gallery was responsible for the characters, but was also the first company to produce local beer!

Follow it up with some tasty treats at the Fushimi Yume Hyakushu Cafe, as well as the trendy, bustling shopping district of Fushimi!

During the tour, we will spend time at the Gekkeikan Okura sake museum where a brief history of sake can be understood. Since they have been making sake since 1637, with a nearly 4-century-old process, our guests really see how things have been done for generations.

At the Gekkeikan Okura sake museum, we will also get a chance to see the sake brewery. Our guests will get a sense of the traditional brewing process which involves a combination of water, malt, yeast, and steamed rice. The different cuts and variety of rice play a big part in the distinction of the sake. If a grain of rice has less grain shaved off, it is more bitter. Generally, the more grain is shaved, the sweeter it will taste.

Please note: due to legal restrictions at some of our stops on this tour- all members of your group must be 20 years old or older. Single travelers: please email us directly and let us know if you have any dietary restrictions or allergies. Tour Highlights:

Inside Kyoto

A Kyoto Travel Guide

Exploring Fushimi – Kyoto’s Sake District

To the south of Kyoto lies Fushimi: a famous center of sake production. Michael Lambe guides us through this picturesque area to sample the delights of sake culture and explore its tree-lined canals, historic sites and beautiful wooden brewery buildings.

The Okura Kinenkan

The Waters of Fushimi

Fushimi. Say it aloud and the very sound of those soft syllables seems refreshing. This is not inappropriate. The name originally meant “underground water”, and Fushimi is famous for its springs.

A boat cruise on a Fushimi canal

The water from these underground sources is soft, mellow and is held to be particularly delicious – perfect for sake production. Many sake breweries thrive in this area and Fushimi sake is renowned as the perfect complement for Kyoto cuisine.

Fushimi Yume Hyakushu Café

Historically the waters of Fushimi also made this area an important hub of transport and trade. Here the confluence of three rivers, the Uji, Katsura and Kamo, and an intricate network of canals were put to good use, sending rice, sake and other goods between the cities of Kyoto and Osaka.

A diorama of Fushimi’s waterways

However, before we cruise Fushimi’s waterways, or sample its famous rice wine, let us first pay our respects to the deity of rice!

Fushimi-Inari-Taisha Shrine

Fushimi-Inari-Taisha Shrine

Fushimi is a big district but its most famous and popular location is Fushimi-Inari-Taisha Shrine . Tourists flock to visit this site dedicated to Inari, the god of rice. Climb through the endless corridors of vermilion torii gates that line the paths of Inari Mountain and you will be rewarded with spectacular views over the city. In 2014, TripAdvisor users ranked Fushimi-Inari-Taisha Japan’s top tourist attraction .

The view from Inari Mountain

Fushimi-Inari-Taisha can be accessed via JR Inari Station or Keihan Fushimi Inari Station. If you go, be prepared for crowds. However, if we follow the train lines south and venture deeper into Fushimi, we can discover a quieter, but no less fascinating area of quaint back streets and tree-lined canals, steeped in history and sake culture.

Choken-ji Temple

Take the Keihan line south from Fushimi-Inari Station and get off at Chushojima. You are now at the heart of Fushimi’s sake-brewing district. Walk north till you reach a canal and Choken-ji Temple. You will recognize it by its red walls and massive gingko trees.

The entrance to Choken-ji.

The temple is dedicated to Benzaiten, the only female member of Japan’s seven lucky gods. Originally an Indian river deity, her Japanese incarnation is primarily a patron of water courses and those who ply their trade on the river.

Choken-ji Temple grounds

However, by extension she is also held to be a deity of everything that flows: words, music, knowledge and, of course, sake. Artists and musicians pray at this shrine to keep their inspiration flowing and local businesses pray here that their profits keep flowing too.

This temple is open from 8am until 5pm daily.

The Maria Lantern – A Relic of the Hidden Christians

In a corner of Choken-ji’s grounds is a lantern. If you look closely at its base you can see a figure which represents Mary, the mother of Jesus.

The Maria Lantern at Choken-ji

During the Edo period (1603 – 1868), Christianity was outlawed by the shogunate under pain of death. However, here and there some pockets of hidden Christians kept their beliefs alive. Many Christian families would hide Christian religious images within outwardly Buddhist statues, or as we see here they would carve a religious image at the base of a simple garden lantern where it could be easily concealed. A wooden sign by the lantern gives some information about the lantern’s origins.

Christian image at Choken-ji temple

Apparently, the lantern was found in the garden of a 19th century tea-house, named Beni-ya. This was a high class business in the local pleasure quarter, whose girls would entertain members of the Imperial Court, and local hero Sakamoto Ryoma was also a customer. Beni-ya had a special hidden room for secret assignations, and attached to it a small garden in which they kept this lantern. How this religious item ended up in the secret garden of a tea-house is not explained. However, before being made illegal in 1614, Christianity had flourished in Fushimi. There was a church here (now the site of an elementary school), and Takayama Ukon (1552 – 1615), a powerful Christian samurai lord, had a home here. Doubtless some Christian families in Fushimi continued to keep their faith in secret.

Jikkokubune Canal Cruise

The boat launch for Jikkokubune canal cruises

There is a bridge over the canal directly outside the entrance of Choken-ji temple that will take you to the boat launch for jikkobune canal cruises. The jikkobune are the flat-bottomed boats that once carried rice and sake to and from Fushimi. Now they are fitted out with seats for a very enjoyable 15 passenger cruise down to the harbor and lock gate that joins the canal to the Uji-gawa River.

The Misukomon harbor and lock gate

Here there is a small museum where passengers can take a short break. The information here is all in Japanese but the dioramas depicting Fushimi as it was in times gone by are still worth a look.

A diorama of Fushimi at the Misukomon Museum

Another boat will then arrive and pick up the passengers for the return journey. The canals are lined with willows and cherry trees, so at times you feel as if you are floating through a green tunnel. It is a delightfully relaxing experience that I would highly recommend.

Spring green along the canal

These tours last for 55 minutes and cost 1000 yen (500 yen for children under 12). When you buy a ticket for the next available tour, you will be asked to come back at least ten minutes before the tour departs as it takes time for everyone to board the boat and get ready. There is also another tour in a larger 30-seat boat that starts at a launch point near the Teradaya Inn, and that lasts 40 minutes. Jikkokubune canal cruises are only available from April 1st until November 30th and the schedule changes according to the season. Check the website for availability and have someone Japanese interpret the finer details.

Sake Tasting at the Gekkeikan Okura Kinenkan

Gekkeikan is the most famous of Fushimi’s breweries, and is also one of the world’s oldest companies having been founded here by Jiemon Okura in 1637. The Okura Kinenkan is a former sake warehouse that has been converted into a museum. It is a beautiful old building situated conveniently, right behind the launch for the Jikkokubune.

The Gekkeikan Okura Kinenkan

Whichever way you look at it, the 300 yen entry fee for this museum is an absolute bargain. The admission fee not only includes entry to the museum but also includes a free tasting of sake and plum wine. You also receive with your ticket a small plastic bottle of sake to take away with you. It’s excellent marketing of course. I enjoyed all the sake I sampled there and I liked the plum wine so much, I bought a bottle to take home with me.

The Okura Kinenkan entrance

The museum features tools and artifacts that explain traditional sake making methods as well as items related to the history of the company. English explanations accompany the displays and as you wander about the exhibits you can listen to recorded folk songs from the pre-Industrial era that workers in the breweries would sing to accompany their labors.

Displays explain the traditional sake brewing process

Check the museum website for details of its opening hours and an access map.

The museum gives a real taste of sake culture

You can pick up a free English pamphlet here which contains a detailed map of the local area. This will prove particularly useful in finding our way to the next location on our tour – The Teradaya Inn.

The Teradaya Inn

The Teradaya Inn

Following the map you received at the Okura Kinenkan, go north and then west to reach the Teradaya. In the 19th century Fushimi was a thriving river port and people would stay at this inn when traveling by boat between Osaka and Kyoto. It is still a working inn today as well as being a museum dedicated to its most famous guest: the legendary samurai, Sakamoto Ryoma.

A statue of the famed revolutionary Sakamoto Ryoma and his wife, Oryo

Ryoma is a hugely popular figure in Japan. In a time when Japan was still ruled by a feudal military government, he was working with other revolutionaries for his vision of modern democracy. In March 1866, Ryoma was staying at the Teradaya Inn when it was suddenly attacked by pro-government forces. A girl, named Oryo, who was having a bath on the ground floor, ran naked up the stairs to warn Ryoma that he was under attack – and only just in time. Ryoma received sword cuts on his hands but with another comrade he managed to fight off superior numbers with his revolver and made his escape. Later Ryoma and Oryo were married and departed on their honeymoon from this very Inn. This was the first honeymoon ever taken in Japan.

Ryoma memorabilia

Unfortunately, the displays at the Teradaya do not have accompanying English explanations. However if you are a history buff then a visit to this site is a must, if only to see the notch on a wooden pillar that is said to be a sword cut from that death-defying skirmish! Local business has done much to capitalize on the association with Ryoma, and his image is everywhere about Fushimi. A life size cutout figure of the burly samurai greets you as you step off the train at Chushojima, and a nearby shopping street has been renamed Ryoma-dori Street in his honour.

Entry to the Teradaya Inn is 400 yen. To read more about Sakamoto Ryoma and the history of those times read my Kyoto Samurai article .

Fushimi Yume Hyakushu Café

Inside the Fushimi Yume Hyakushu Café

Head back eastward from the Teradaya and then turn right to find the black walls of the Fushimi Yume Hyakushu Café. This is another converted Gekkeikan building dating from 1919. The café inside makes for a pleasant rest stop, and there is also a souvenir shop selling sake and various sake related products.

Treat yourself to some sake flavored sponge cake – delicious!

Address: 247 Minami Hama-cho, Fushimi-ku, Kyoto City Tel: 075-623-1360 Opening hours: Weekdays from 10:30am to 5pm Closed on Mondays (except National Holidays)

The Fushimi Sake Festival

Fushimi Yume Hyakushu Café

Each spring a sake festival is held in Fushimi. The main events at the festival are sake tastings at two separate locations in which you can sample over 30 different varieties.

Sake tasting at the Fushimi Sake Festival

This is an annual event, but the date (usually in March) is not fixed and tickets for the main sake tastings, which are sold in advance, are limited to just 800 people. Naturally these sell out quickly. If you can’t speak or read Japanese and you don’t live locally, then this makes the event very difficult to plan for. However, unless you are a real sake connoisseur, you don’t really need to taste over 30 different varieties! Many local shops and breweries hold smaller sake tastings on the same day that you don’t need special tickets for.

Gekkeikan Okura Kinenkan

The streets are also lively with stalls selling food, ceramics, and other sake related goods. In recent years Fushimi has also held a Jazz festival on the same day at several locations around the town. So if you happen to be in Fushimi on the right day in March, you can still take part and enjoy this cheerful local festival.

Local jazz band, Fujiya Mountain

For news of the sake festival and other sake related events, check the Fushimi Brewers’ Association website in Japanese and their very useful and informative English language website .

Kizakura Kappa Country

After a hard day’s touring you deserve a good meal. Head north from the Fushimi Yume Hyakushu Café and then turn left on Aburakake-dori Street. A little further to the west is Kizakura Kappa Country, another converted sake brewery. This building houses a museum, souvenir shop and restaurant. It is the restaurant that we are interested in. This is actually one of my favorite places to bring guests to Kyoto, as it is so much fun.

Kizakura Kappa Country at night

The Kizakura company makes a range craft beers as well as sakes, and you can try them both out here in little taster sets.

A sake taster set

Once you have found the drink that suits you, you can then order that particular tipple and quaff it to your heart’s content.

A craft beer taster set” which is made with sake yeast

The food here is pretty good too. They have the usual izakaya style pub-restaurant fare, but also some unique dishes made with the local brews. Beef stewed in beer with mashed potatoes for example, or sake flavored cheesecake.

Sake flavored cheesecake and a locally brewed beer

And if you really like any of these drinks you can purchase them at the souvenir shop on your way out. Cheers!

How to Get There

You can get to the brewery by train and shuttle bus.

From whiskey to beer

Suntory operates a whisky distillery, and even produced the first whisky to be registered in the U.S. (In fact, you can also tour the Suntory Yamazaki Distillery, 30 minutes south of the brewery by train.)

After their success with whiskey, Suntory began brewing its own beer, and soon became one of the most popular breweries in the country.

Hour-long tours are available at the brewery, with corresponding pamphlets in English, Korean and Chinese. A guide will take you around the rather industrial factory, where you can learn about the beer-brewing process from beginning to end.

After the tour comes the best part—a tasting session where you can try Suntory's beers for free. Juice, tea and water are also available. A pouring demonstration is held while you imbibe.

9 Places to See the Summer Olympics Without Setting Foot in Paris

You may have trouble finding accommodations or tickets to events in Paris, but other destinations around France are hosting sports like soccer, sailing, basketball and surfing.

The stone buildings of a Marseille, France, situated next to a port filled with sailboats. A hill rises in the background, and there is a church with a tall spire on top. The whole scene is bathed in rose-colored light.

By Sophie Stuber

For sports fans, Paris will be the center of the universe this summer — and with 15 million Olympic and Paralympic visitors expected, it will feel like it, with crowds and high prices. But Paris isn’t the only Olympic site in France: Nine destinations outside the metro region are also hosting events, giving travelers a way to catch some action without getting caught up in the crush.

In places like Bordeaux, Marseille and even Tahiti, you can watch top athletes compete in soccer, basketball, sailing and surfing. (Tickets have been added in batches, so if the ones you want aren’t available, keep checking the ticketing site, tickets.Paris2024.org . If all else fails, the official resale platform opens on May 15 .)

And when you’re not watching sports, you can take advantage of museums, parks, design centers, and fresh food and wine options. In Nantes, you can even ride a mechanical elephant.

Here are some ideas for planning your own alternative Olympic trip.

Basketball: July 27 to Aug. 4; tickets from 50 euros ($54).

Handball: Aug. 6 to 11, tickets from €45.

Start with a stroll around Vieux-Lille and a coffee in the Grande Place, taking in the colorful facades of this city near the Belgian border. Head over to the St.-Sauveur area to see the Art Deco belfry and exhibitions at Gare St.-Sauveur , a former train station. On Sundays, at the rambling Wazemmes market , about 400 vendors offer produce, fish, plants, fabrics, textiles and leather goods. Head out to Parc du Héron , east of the city, to see the LaM museum (€7), with works by the likes of Pablo Picasso, Amedeo Modigliani and Joan Miró. Lille is better known for beer than for wine, and the Brasserie Gobrecht offers brewery tours every Saturday (reservations recommended).

Where to stay: Hotel de la Paix (€354 per night); Hotel Carlton (€406).

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 2; tickets from €24.

Capital of a region best known for its wine, this small southwestern city sells local wine-walk maps at its tourist office. Stop by the Marché des Capucins , a local indoor market that also houses Bistro Poulette , a slightly chaotic and very delicious spot serving moules-frites, or mussels with fries. In the afternoon, check out the Bassins des Lumières (€15), the largest digital art center in the world, and the Cité du Vin (€21), which offers wine-tasting experiences. To wind down in a quiet wine bar, try Yarra , or for a cocktail, Symbiose . If you have time for side trips, spend a day in St.-Emilion, about 27 miles away, where you can sample great wines. Or check out the nearly 340-foot-high Dune du Pilat , the tallest sand dune in Europe — about 37 miles southwest of Bordeaux, near the beach town of Arcachon.

To stay: Les Chambres de Marie (€170); La Maison Galiène (€259); Yndo Hotel (€355); Le Palais Gallien Hôtel & Spa (€419).

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 8; tickets from €24.

The street signs in Nantes are in both Breton and French, reflecting the city’s historical ties to Brittany. Start at Talensac Market for picnic supplies, especially radishes, local cheeses and strawberries. Pick up local delicacies like Gâteau Nantais (almond poundcake) and Far Breton (flan with Armanac-soaked prunes). Take your picnic lunch to the courtyard of the Château des Ducs de Bretagne , a medieval castle and museum (courtyard is free; museum is €9). On the Île de Nantes, a former shipyard has been transformed into a wild mechanical theme park. The Machines de l’Île mixes Jules Verne’s stories with Leonardo da Vinci’s designs in the form of a ridable mechanical elephant and sea creatures (€9.50 for the elephant ride or gallery visit). The Mémorial de l’Abolition de l’Esclavage (free) covers Nantes’s history as the most active slave-trading port in 18th-century France. The artists behind the glass-and-concrete memorial, Krzysztof Wodiczko and Julian Bonder , aimed to create “a metaphorical and emotional reminder of the primarily historical, but also very current, struggle for the abolition of slavery.”

To stay: Hotel Voltaire Opéra (€103); Hotel de la Cité (€120).

Châteauroux

Shooting: July 27 to Aug. 5; tickets from €24.

The small city not far from the Loire Valley is named for Château Raoul , the 10th-century castle that’s now part of a local official’s private residence. The best view of the château is from the Gütersloh Bridge. Follow the “coulée verte” — or green corridor — along the banks of the Indre River, stopping by Parc de Belle-Isle , which has a lake for swimming, with kayaks and stand-up paddle boards to rent, as well as a beach, playgrounds and camping. The Franciscan Cordeliers Convent (free), which dates to the 13th century, today offers contemporary art exhibits and miles of gardens, and the Bertrand Museum (free), a former 18th-century townhouse, showcases diverse collections in each of its 26 rooms, including the plaster original of the Camille Claudel sculpture “Sakuntala.”

To stay: Au Lys Blanc (€138); Les Rives du Château (€210 for a two-bedroom apartment).

Lyon and St.-Étienne

Soccer: Lyon, July 24 to Aug. 9; tickets from €24. St.-Étienne, July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

It will be easy to catch soccer matches in either Lyon or St.-Étienne, only an hour apart by train or car in east-central France. In Lyon, often called the gastronomic capital of France, visit the majestic Notre-Dame de Fourvière Basilica , then savor an ice cream at La Fabrique Givrée . Explore the city’s network of covered passageways, called traboules — originally for workers to transport textiles and later used during World War II by the French Resistance for clandestine meetings. Then climb up to the Pentes de la Croix-Rousse neighborhood, with its tiny streets, shops and views of Lyon below. On a clear day, you can even see Mont Blanc. The Lugdunum museum (€7) and the nearby Roman theater (€4) take visitors back to 43 B.C., when Lyon was known as Lugdunum, and La Maison des Canuts (€9.50), covers the city’s history as a capital of silk.

Between Lyon and St.-Étienne, Pilat Regional Natural Park offers more than 900 miles of rocky terrain for hiking and biking, culminating at the summit of 4,700-foot Crêt de la Perdrix , with views of the Alps and Massif Central range.

St.-Étienne, about 40 miles southwest of Lyon, is transforming its historical industrial identity into one of design and innovation. At the heart is the Cité du Design (€4.50), the former site of a weapons factory, which has served as a center for art and research since 2010. The complex, now a key economic force in the city, is open to the public year-round and hosts art and design exhibitions.

To stay in Lyon: Fourvière Hotel (€189); Hôtel du Théâtre (€323).

To stay in St.-Étienne: Le Parc 42 (€113); Le Golf Sauna (€269).

Sailing (including windsurfing, kitesurfing and more): July 28 to Aug. 8; tickets from €24.

Soccer: July 24 to Aug. 6; tickets from €24.

This Mediterranean port city mixes urban grit and natural beauty. Start by visiting Le Panier, the village-like oldest part of the city. Try navettes , a traditional orange flower biscuit, and sample some sardines or panisses , traditional chickpea fries, on a sunny terrace. Detour through the touristy but pleasant Old Port on the way to Mucem (€11), the first major museum dedicated to Mediterranean civilization and cultures. Have a pick-me-up at Deep Coffee Roasters , a specialty roaster tucked away between touristy shops. At sunset, climb up to Cours Julien , a hip neighborhood with beautiful views for your apéro. Don’t miss the Cité Radieuse , a UNESCO-listed apartment complex that shows off the architect Le Corbusier’s Modernist mastery (you can stay at the hotel in it). And just southeast of the city, the Calanques , a series of small, narrow coves , offer miles of oceanside trails and rocky scrambles along turquoise water.

To stay: Hotel Le Corbusier (€229); Maison Juste (€300).

Soccer: July 24 to 31; tickets from €24.

Summer is peak season in Nice, the queen city of the French Riviera, where the mountains meet the Mediterranean. Run, bike or in-line skate along the Promenade des Anglais , a four-mile seaside path. Then climb up to the Colline du Château , a rocky hill east of the promenade with views of Nice and even as far as the Alps. For a longer walk, follow the trails from Coco Beach to the Cap de Nice along the coves. Then head to Cours Saleya , a pedestrian section of the Old Town, with flower stands, antiques and local food like the socca , a chickpea pancake. The Musée de Préhistoire Terra Amata (€5), constructed on top of an excavation site, reveals what Nice was like up to 400,000 years ago. Or just enjoy one of Nice’s pebbled beaches in a lounge chair.

To stay: Hôtel Rossetti (€186); Yelo Mozart (€238).

Teahupo’o, Tahiti

Surfing: July 27 to 31 ( events could shift through Aug. 4, depending on surf conditions); fan zones free.

For surfing’s second Olympics since its debut in Tokyo, the competition takes place far from mainland France in Tahiti, part of French Polynesia. Since the wave is offshore, there will be two ticket-free fan zones — Taharu’u Beach and Paofai Gardens — to watch the events on large screens. A third fan zone at PK0 beach in Teahupo’o will have free tickets but limited access. Tahiti offers white sands and turquoise lagoons in addition to near-perfect waves. For snorkeling, try the lagoon near Maui Beach , five miles from Teahupo’o. For black volcanic sands, head to Taharu’u Beach, about 20 miles northwest of Teahupo’o. About 45 miles from Teahupo’o, Papeete, the capital of French Polynesia, with a population of about 26,000, offers a variety of local delicacies like poisson cru: raw fish with lime juice and coconut milk, served with rice. Sample local fare, including steak frites and skewered veal heart, from food trucks, called roulettes, at Place Vai’ete, on the waterfront, near the Papeete Market.

To stay: Kia Ora Lodge (€265, seven miles from Teahupo’o); Punatea Village (€73, six miles from Teahupo’o).
