This 'transformer' bag is perfect for both daily and travel backpack. The expanded mode is really universe-eater, I thought that I've put my everything in but I never make it full. The shoulder straps design is perfect. Unlike other backpack that make squishy pad, ACE did a magic with the shape instead to make it comfort.

It’s no secret that I really liked FREYA-RUCK2. It was a good bag for girls who don’t want to bring a bulky backpack to the office with a laptop and some cables inside the bag. In addition to that, there are also many zippered pockets inside. It’s very stealthy and great for keeping items like a passport or wallet. Even with all of that stuff inside, it was comfortable and easy for girls to lug around.

The wheels are incredibly easy to push around in ALL directions, and I love the function that allows me to open up the luggage while it is still standing up (in case you need to just take something in and out quickly without having to plop down on the floor to go through the entire luggage in public). Lastly, I really do enjoy the stop button which allows me to stop worrying about the luggage wheeling off somewhere. All of these functions (super light, functional design, ease of use) will allow your travel day to be much less stressful!

If you're headed on a long trip or just consider yourself an over-packer, you might need more than one bag for your belongings (not to mention space to overfill with souvenirs on the way home). Instead of lugging around a hodgepodge of pieces, consider a luggage set. There's nothing more chic and put together than carrying a coordinating set of luggage complete with carry-on and checked bags. And if you're vacationing with kids or family, traveling with a matching set is a great way to keep track of all your bags. But with so many options to choose from, including different types of materials and all kinds of organizational features, it can be difficult to decide which luggage sets will look great, hold up to frequent use and really be worth the splurge.

Samsonite continues to stand out in our Lab evaluations and has wowed our consumer testers , earning it the title of best overall luggage brand . This luggage set includes two of our top-tested suitcases from the brand's Freeform collection — the smaller 21-inch carry-on model and the larger 28-inch checked bag. These suitcases are made of durable hardside material that performed well in our drop tests, resisting major damage after being released repeatedly at different angles from a set 3-foot height.

When we packed the suitcases with a standard load of items like clothing, shoes and accessories, we were impressed by how well everything fit inside with room to spare — even without having to use the 2-inch expansion system. One caveat: Some of our testers noted that the carrying handles on suitcases in this collection felt a bit tight, which made it more difficult to lift or lower the bags. However, the telescopic handles received higher scores for feeling sturdy and comfortable to use. Testers also appreciated how easily the suitcases navigated around twists and turns and said the 360-degree spinner wheels were smooth.

The hardside suitcases are made of lightweight ABS plastic that keeps the price low, though it wasn't as scratch-resistant as some other suitcases we tested. It did hold up well in our drop tests though, with no serious denting or breakage after being released repeatedly from a set 3-foot height. When testers rolled the suitcases through our luggage obstacle course, around turns and over different surfaces from wood to carpeting, they were impressed by the maneuverability and wheel performance.

As the name implies, these Delsey Helium DLX suitcases are some of the lightest we've evaluated in the Lab. No more lugging around bulky bags or struggling to lift your carry-on into the overhead bin. Despite being so lightweight, these bags are tough. In our tests for durability, the luggage held up well after being released repeatedly in our drop tests, and the softside nylon material showed no signs of wear after being rubbed back and forth 15,000 times by our abrasion tester.

In our evaluations, we found the exterior zippers a bit tricky to use, and the bags received lower scores for maneuverability than other suitcases we tried, but they did earn high scores for their comfortable gripped telescopic handles and for being easy to pack. All three of the suitcases open into one primary packing compartment with compression straps, and the lids of each bag are equipped with zippered pockets and elastic sleeves for additional storage. There are removable bi-fold organizers inside as well. I particularly love that the linings can be unzipped and removed for easy cleaning.

When we packed the bags in the Lab, we appreciated how smoothly the zippers opened and closed and how much we could fit inside.

The polycarbonate material is super lightweight — even lighter than some of our favorite softside luggage — and ultra-durable. It performed well in our drop tests, remaining in great condition after being released multiple times from a set 3-foot height. In our scratch tests, the bags showed minimal scuffs and markings. One caveat: Our consumer testers gave the telescopic handle lower ratings for feeling a bit wobbly when fully extended. The bags received high scores for their maneuverability and smooth wheels. How we test the best luggage

At the Good Housekeeping Institute , we test all kinds of luggage to determine which pieces are worth buying. We evaluate luggage in the Textiles, Paper & Apparel Lab and share it with consumer testers who bring the luggage on their own trips and then provide us with valuable feedback. Here's what we look for when we test suitcases:

• Size and weight: To ensure that the brands' listed dimensions for the suitcases are accurate, we measure each bag in the Lab. We weigh the bags and place carry-ons in a 22" x 14" x 9" area to make sure the suitcases meet most airline restrictions.

• Ease of use: We test the luggage to determine how easy it is to open and close zippers and built-in locks, raise and lower the telescopic handles, roll the wheels, grab the carrying handles and more. We then rate and score the luggage for overall ease of use.

• Packing: We fill each piece of luggage with a standard load of items like clothing, shoes, accessories and toiletries (pictured) to test the capacity. For larger checked bags, we pack them with a week's worth of items and for carry-on bags, we add a weekend trip's worth of items. We then score each suitcase on how much it's able to hold.

• Drop testing: We fill the suitcases with a standard amount of weight and then load them into our drop tester (pictured). We then release the luggage from a set 3-foot height and repeatedly drop the luggage from different angles, evaluating each piece for any dents, damages or scuffs.

Australian travel bag brand Crumpler announced today (June 28) that it has opened three stores in a row and a regional office in Hong Kong, as part of its global strategy to expand in Asia.

The brand idea stemmed from the founder's DIY messenger bag, which he used as the core design concept when starting Crumpler in Melbourne over two decades ago. The brand eventually established itself as a fun and creative travel bag brand with a wide range of stylish and sturdy products, including backpacks, laptop bags, camera bags, luggage and accessories according to its General Manager, Hong Kong and South East Asia, Mr Jeff Tan.

Mr Tan said, "Hong Kong offers an international window for us to promote our brand to the world. Therefore, we are strengthening our presence here by opening three stores in Hysan Place in Causeway Bay, Harbour City in Tsim Sha Tsui and tmtplaza in Tuen Mun. We plan to have 10 sales locations in the city within two years. By having our own retail outlets, we are confident that we will be in a more advantageous position to introduce our unique brand and products to Hong Kong and beyond."

He added, "Apart from the consumer market, we are also expanding our portfolio to meet corporate customers' needs. Our Hong Kong office will work with corporate clients to design and produce customised bags, similar to our partnership with the Australian Olympic Team and other institutions. Style or Function? Experts Pick the Best Luggage Brands for 2024

Getting behind the wheel and heading out of town for the weekend (or longer) is one of the pure joys of being an automobile enthusiast. Whether you're driving a minivan full of rowdy preteens to the waterpark or getting away for the weekend with that special someone in a Revuelto , the road trip is perhaps driving's greatest pleasure.

But you gotta pack. Sure, there's a certain romantic spontaneity in just taking off, hygiene and clean socks be damned. But that romance only gets you as far as the next morning's shower. No, a quality piece of luggage is required, be it a weekender duffel or a spinner suitcase.

We travel a lot—but are we getting all we can from our luggage? Are we missing anything? In order to get a better handle on the best luggage brands on the market today, we turned to the experts.

If anyone knows style, it's the editors of Esquire ; and if anyone knows about quality, it's the product testers at Good Housekeeping . Both magazines have published curated lists of the Best Luggage Brands over the last few years, so we took a ride to the Hearst Tower in Manhattan to find out their latest recommendations. (Full disclosure: Both magazines, along with Road & Track and its sister publications at Hearst Autos, fall under the Hearst umbrella.)

The consensus? The type and style of luggage you prefer isn't really important—we all have different tastes, after all—but the brand is. Modern tech and materials have revolutionized the luggage industry in the last decade or so, and with startup companies popping up seemingly every week and dozens of unpronounceable brand names on the internet, it can be hard to separate the gems from the junk.

Both of the experts we asked spotlighted a healthy amount of trusted luggage brands like Samsonite, Victorinox , and Tumi. And they introduced us to new and notable luggage from Paravel and Solgaard . Sprinkle in familiar names like Away, Filson , and Herschel Supply Co., and we've come up with a list of 11 quality luggage brands that Road & Track readers should consider tossing in the back of the car the next time the open road calls.

One of the most renowned names in luggage. The venerable Good Housekeeping Institute named Samsonite its "Best Overall" luggage brand because it offers "a wide assortment for every preference—from business travelers to vacationers—and has continuously proven to be high quality as we've tested it over the years." Esquire editors loved the brand too, specifically noting that Samsonite overcomes its heritage reputation by continuing to churn out "smart, modern" luggage.

The Tru-Frame Carry-On Spinner features four multi-directional dual wheels and an ultra-protective security frame with sealed gasket closure. It also has an integrated TSA-friendly combination lock and a deluxe interior with two divider panels, two cross-straps, and plenty of organizational pockets.

Solgaard's expanding closet-style spinners are the biggest innovation in carry-on luggage since Away introduced its integrated Li-ion battery back in 2015. Heck, even Time magazine named Solgaard luggage one of its Best Inventions of 2018 . The built-in shelving system allows you to organize outfits rather than just toss in a pile of clothes, letting you dial in various looks for particular events and arrive with everything you might need.

The Carry-On Closet is constructed with a tough polycarbonate shell and an aluminum frame and features an integrated USB charging port. Five internal shelves compress when the suitcase is closed, keeping your clothes neat during travel. When you arrive, just open it up and let your travel closet expand. The interior lining is made from 100% recycled ocean-bound plastic.

Seattle's Filson began as an outfitter for the pioneers of the 1897 Yukon Gold Rush. Today, Filson apparel and gear represent the ultimate in quality to outdoor enthusiasts and tradespeople the world over, combining durability and style in a rugged aesthetic derived from function. Looks good and works great? Sign us up.

The Medium Rugged Twill Duffel is perhaps Filson's best-known piece of luggage. The lightly waxed fabric keeps your gear dry, and bridle leather from Wickett & Craig is used not just for the removable shoulder strap but also for Filson's signature leather wraparound handles, designed to cradle heavy loads. The bag closes with a solid brass YKK zipper that's protected by a snap storm flap. Solid brass hardware is used throughout, and interior end pockets provide organization. It's perfect for throwing into the back seat for a weekend road trip; it even makes an ideal carry-on.

Away burst onto the travel scene in 2015 with a carry-on spinner suitcase that featured an internal Lithium-ion battery—a real game-changer for modern business travelers. Today, Li-ion batteries have proven to be, well, somewhat hazardous and are allowed only in carry-ons—and only under stringent guidelines that usually result in an exhaustive and timely TSA search. Away's battery is now ejectable, making it easy to show to TSA officers or pop out from checked luggage and drop into your carry-on. Unfortunately, it's currently available only in select few suitcases, including The Bigger Carry-On, Aluminum Edition .

Larger and slightly heavier than Away's signature spinners, the Bigger Carry-On is also more durable—and far better-looking, in our eyes. Pricey? Sure. But its convenience, quality, and tech are undeniable for frequent travelers. Not worried about on-the-go charging? The standard Bigger Carry-on Flex costs about half the price but doesn't offer a battery. Neither does the smaller, lighter, and less expensive Carry-On Flex .

Herschel Supply Co.

As Esquire points out, many of us probably already own—and love—a Herschel backpack. The aesthetic carries over to the brand's complete line of luggage. Sporty, hip design cues blended with quality materials and construction make for fantastic suitcases, duffle bags, and more.

The 50L Outfitter Wheelie Duffel features the same casual-but-classy aesthetic as Herschel's ubiquitous backpacks but in carry-on roller-luggage form, with a retractable two-stage locking trolley handle, zippered U-shaped closure, and top and side carrying handles. It's also available in a 70L size for long trips.

We're not as concerned with fashion as we are with style and performance. However, a blend of all three is impossible to deny, and we have to admit this black/white spinner is a stunner. More impressive is Paravel's commitment to sustainability.

The Aviator Carry-On is crafted of sustainably sourced materials including recycled polycarbonate, aluminum, and plastic water bottles. Even the zippers are made with recycled materials, and Paravel's worldwide shipping is carbon offset. The Aviator also comes in a larger carry-on size as well as a Checked size.

While this color scheme is surely a knockout, any white suitcase is bound to get dirty and scuffed up pretty quickly. Thankfully, Paravel luggage comes in a variety of styles and colors to suit any taste.

We agree with Esquire : "If you're a traveling businessperson, there's nothing more classic than Tumi luggage." With everything from hard-sided check-ins to soft-sided spinners, briefcases, and many more options, Tumi luggage hits that sweet spot between stylish and practical like nobody else.

The Alpha Garment Bag Tri-Fold Carry-On is just one example. It can carry up to two suits or gowns, with plenty of room left over for toiletries and business materials—plus all that swag you accumulate at events, conferences, and presentations. Then it all folds up twice into a compact 15 by 22 by 6 inches (L/W/H)—a perfect fit for an overhead compartment. Or just lay it flat in the back seat or trunk. If you're in the market for top-of-the-line hard-sided luggage, look no further than premium German luggage brand Rimowa. It's not cheap, but Good Housekeeping says its polycarbonate spinner "performed among the best in our testing based on its weight, packing space, durability, and maneuverability." Rimowa only makes hard-sided luggage, but with several collections ranging from the Essential Lite to the Original , which is made of durable aluminum and has "clever packing compartments," there's something here for every discerning traveler.

We love the foot-locker aesthetic of the Classic Trunk . It comes in silver or matte black and is made from anodized aluminum alloy, with riveted matte black aluminum corners and handmade leather handles. All Rimowa luggage comes with a lifetime guarantee.

Ever stand at baggage claim and wonder which black spinner suitcase belongs to you? Stop wondering with Roam. Roam's customizable hard-sided carry-ons let you choose from several colors for the front, back, lining, trim, and even the zipper. Amazon Basics

Don't scoff— Good Housekeeping put a ton of luggage through its renowned testing lab wringer and found that Amazon Basics luggage is a phenomenal deal for the price. They also noted the wide variety of luggage available, from backpacks and duffels to soft-sided spinners. If you're simply looking for (let's just say it) cheap luggage that gets the job done, you could easily spend way more and wind up with far worse.

GH specifically called out the Hardside Spinner Carry-On . Lab testers found it to be "exceptionally easy to pack" and liked its maneuverability and wheel performance. They also liked that it came in a variety of colors and sizes, and was even available in two- and three-packs, although they noted "the ABS material wasn't as scratch-resistant as other models in our tests."

Things to Consider When Choosing a Luggage Brand

Even Esquire , that harbinger of fashion and trends since 1933, admits that style isn't the most important consideration when choosing a luggage brand. "Luggage is more about practicality," the site says, pointing out that individual traveling style should take a back seat to your luggage needs and the features you'll require.

Consider the length of your trip, the reason for it (Business? Pleasure? A bit of both?), and what you'll need to wear while you're away from home. Many travelers advise leaving a bit of space in your luggage, and we agree; we always pick up souvenirs and/or swag while on the road, and a stuffed suitcase on your way out might not be able to contain everything you come home with.

Other luggage considerations, according to the experts at Good Housekeeping :

• Soft or hard : Soft-sided luggage can expand to fit a few extra items or compress into tight spaces. It often has more pockets and organizational compartments too, into which last-minute items can be tucked. And in small automobile trunks and cargo holds, a soft suitcase might squeeze into places a hard-shell bag won't.

But for protection and durability—and of course, pickup-truck beds—hard-sided luggage is the way to go. Usually made of polycarbonate or aluminum, suitcases with solid shells are often lighter and much more hard-wearing than soft luggage. Waterproofing (or at least water-resistance) is vastly improved. Best of all, modern polycarbonate materials are tougher and lighter than ever. They're far easier to clean too.

• Size & style : Most luggage brands offer suitcases in both carry-on as well as checked-in sizes. For road trips, this might not be as much of a consideration—until you try to stuff a checked-size suitcase into the cargo hold of a sports car. Get the right size for the trip you're taking. If you're just headed out of town for the weekend, a small, lightweight, compressible duffle bag might suit your needs—and look fantastic over your shoulder as you're strolling through the hotel lobby.

For business trips, consider what you'll wear while on the job. If you need a change of nice clothes on your trip, a foldable garment bag and a small weekender for casuals might be all you need.

• Mobility : There's no excuse anymore to lug around a suitcase without wheels. If you're considering buying one, don't. Most modern suitcases and even large gear duffles offer wheels to make moving through airports and parking lots far smoother and easier. Any wheeled luggage should also have a telescoping handle to make toting it around and packing it away that much easier.

If you do opt for a suitcase, go for what's known as a spinner, with four rotating wheels that offer 360 degrees of freestanding mobility. If you must go without wheels, opt for a duffle or garment bag instead of a case.

• Extra features : As modern luggage gets lighter and better, it also gets more helpful and practical. (And, yeah, probably more expensive too.) Look for things like exterior compartments or pockets that offer easy access to valuables without opening the luggage—or sacrificing security. Many modern luggage brands offer TSA-approved Li-ion batteries to charge devices on the go. Locks, telescopic handles, side handles for easy lifting, hard-shell corners for durability—the list goes on and on. So unless you're really trying to save money on luggage, there's no reason to skimp on features.

How Good Housekeeping Tests Luggage

The Good Housekeeping Institute has been testing and evaluating consumer-facing products for over a century. Today's GH Institute Testing Lab takes up an entire floor in Midtown Manhattan's Hearst Tower and puts everything from appliances to bedclothes to apparel through its legendary wringer in hopes of achieving that coveted nod from Good Housekeeping .

Luggage evaluations are conducted in the Good Housekeeping Institute's Textiles Lab and combine proprietary test methods using specialized equipment. Lab testers even set up an office obstacle course for luggage to navigate, to gauge each piece's mobility.

During testing, each piece of luggage is evaluated for the following factors:

Size, weight, and ease of packing: Every piece of luggage is weighed empty, then checked to make sure it meets contemporary airline measurement restrictions. The Lab also examines the zippers and latches and rates how easy it is to open and close each piece, along with the accessibility and convenience of packing compartments.

Capacity : Using a standard load—for instance, carry-on luggage gets enough clothing, accessories, and toiletries for a three-day, two-night trip—GH scores each piece of luggage based on how much it's able to hold.

Drop test : The GH Testing Lab is loaded with machines and devices for testing all kinds of items, and luggage is no exception. For suitcases, a specialized machine drops each piece from a 3-foot height and then testers check for damage. The luggage is then filled with a standard weight and repeatedly dropped again from different angles to mimic real-world use (and abuse!).

Abrasion, scratch, and water resistance tests: To gauge how well the outer surface reacts to real-world hazards, the Lab performs scratch tests on hard-sided luggage and abrasion tests on soft-sided luggage. Using blotting paper on the inside of zippers, testers pour water onto the case and measure how much moisture seeps through.

Obstacle course : This is the fun one. Institute testers set up an obstacle course around the office floor that requires lifting and rolling cases around cones, in and out of doorways, over different surfaces, and more, getting feedback on things like mobility and maneuverability, sturdiness, and wheel performance. They also share their feedback on appearance and overall satisfaction.

Sure, their suitcases may be stuffed to the brim with high-end toiletries and designer fashion, but I’m less interested in what the celebs are packing and much more interested in what they’re rolling alongside them . Don’t expect to see these star athletes, actors, and musicians at the airport with a rickety old four-wheeler they bought online two days earlier.

So which luggage brands pass the test of travel for the people who are traveling all the time? (Dua Lipa, I’m looking at you.) Which styles are the essentials, the reliables, the fashionable—and, more important, functional—bags and suitcases that can secure coveted celebrity-approved status? From an eighty dollar Herschel backpack to a nearly two-grand Rimowa suitcase, this is the luggage that our favorite boldfaced names are using.

China Brief: Consumers Are Spending Again (Outside of China)

Now that we’ve concluded the first quarter of 2024, we thought it would be a good opportunity to take stock of the state of consumption in China. In this edition of “China Brief”, we’ll do a quick scan of key macroeconomic indicators and zoom in on some of the core drivers of recent consumption growth.

While the Chinese economy faces continued headwinds and consumer companies are encountering increasingly fierce competition, one encouraging message emerges from our analysis: we’re off to an encouraging start in the Year of the Dragon.

Macroeconomic indicators holding steady

China experienced a moderate recovery in 2023, marking the first year of bounce-back since the conclusion of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although many harbored higher expectations, it’s crucial not to overlook the positive aspects:

— GDP growth & consumption: GDP grew by 5.2 percent last year, contributing 34 percent to global GDP growth. Admittedly, the growth we saw in 2023 was set against the relatively low base of 2022, a year marred by pandemic- induced lockdowns and stringent travel restrictions. A staggering 83 percent of this growth stemmed from a surge in consumption.

— Employment and income: China finished 2023 with a stable 5.1 percent urban unemployment rate (compared with 5.2 percent at the end of 2019). Inflation held steady at a modest 0.2 percent, while consumers saw their average disposable incomes rise by 6 percent. But as consumer sentiment continues its slump, consumers prefer to sock their cash away in the bank rather than spend it, pushing the savings rate higher. The savings rate in China hit 31.7 percent in 2023. This is propelling the country’s total pool of savings to record highs. To put the numbers into perspective, the total amount of new savings accumulated by Chinese consumers during 2020-23—56 trillion renminbi— exceeds the 47 trillion renminbi in retail sales generated during 2023. (Exhibit 1)

— FDI: Despite concerns around rising geopolitical tensions and a decline in inbound foreign direct investment (FDI) into China by 8 percent 2023, according to China’s Ministry of Commerce, it’s often overlooked that this was the third highest level of FDI in China’s history, only trailing the FDI that China attracted in 2021 and 2022.

— Exports: China’s exports grew by 7 percent during the first two months of 2024 compared to the same period last year, including a 5 percent increase in exports to the US.

While several macroeconomic indicators are pointing in a promising direction, there are a number of areas that are still cause for considerable concern, foremost of which is the continued slump in consumer and business sentiment. The collapse in property transactions in 2023 is a big factor behind the drop in confidence.

A 5 percent decline in exports in 2023, zero growth in fixed asset investment by privately-owned companies, and double-digit unemployment are other key factors driving a reduction consumer spending and investment.

Chinese consumers show promising signs

So, how did China’s consumers kick-off the Year of the Dragon?

The early months of 2024 paint a picture of a Chinese economy that is navigating the post-pandemic world with considerable momentum. While it’s too early to accurately forecast how the remainder of the year will take shape, key consumption indicators are heading in the right direction.

Retail sales in the first two months of 2024 show a healthy year-on-year increase of 5.5 percent, with goods contributing a 4.6 percent rise. Remarkably, foodservice sales leapt by 12.5 percent, indicating a robust recovery in hospitality sectors, possibly buoyed by increased consumer confidence and relaxation of any lingering pandemic restrictions.

Air passenger numbers soared by an astounding 44.4 percent. This upsurge is perhaps the most vivid indicator of renewed mobility and a resurgent appetite for travel and face-to-face business engagements, signaling that air travel has rebounded from the doldrums of the pandemic era.

The food sector saw a 9 percent year-on-year growth. The modest growth in cosmetics and clothing, at 4 percent and 1.9 percent respectively, could suggest a cautious consumer approach to discretionary spending in these segments. Home appliances experienced a moderate 5.7 percent increase, potentially reflecting a steady demand for home improvement (Exhibit 2).

The automotive sector represents another promising area of growth in consumption. While overall auto sales grew by a very healthy 17 percent, during the first two months of the year electric vehicles (EVs) outpaced this number with an impressive 37 percent surge, highlighting changes in consumer preference for greener alternatives, and the government’s push for EV adoption through policy incentives.

Travel bounces back

Both domestic and international travel have continued to bounce back. Travel within Mainland China now significantly exceeds pre-COVID-19 levels, with January and February seeing a 16 percent higher volume than the same period in 2019. This aligns with trends observed in the second half of 2023.

Domestic travel during this year’s Lunar New Year holiday jumped by 34 percent compared with the same period in 2023. This represents a 19 percent increase over the level reached in 2019.

Travel to Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, as well as to international destinations, continues to see gradual month-by-month increases. International travel, as of January and February, reached 77 percent of 2019 levels, steadily rising from December, which reached 63 percent of 2019 levels, and September, at 54 percent of 2019 levels. (Exhibit 3)

We are now just counting the months until Chinese travel activity fully rebounds to pre-COVID-19 levels.

Indeed, McKinsey’s global ConsumerWise survey of consumer sentiment, conducted in February, suggests an optimistic trajectory for international travel, with 36 percent of respondents in China saying they intend to spend more on international travel over the next three months, the highest of all discretionary spending items. (Exhibit 4)

Despite the complexities of applying for overseas travel visas, as well as the high costs of flights and hotels, it looks increasingly likely that China’s travelers are on track to resume the pace of overseas trips they once enjoyed.

Interestingly, while expenditures on property and personal items such as apparel and cosmetics are decreasing, spending on higher-value items like cars and international travel are on the rise.

Overseas spending surges

Although international travel hasn’t fully bounced back, overseas spending has recovered disproportionately faster than the growth in the number of outbound travelers.

Despite a stark reduction in the number of shoppers—a likely residue of the pandemic’s impact—spending per person has surged. According to data from Global Blue, the average spending per Chinese traveler has substantially exceeded 2019 levels: 14 percent higher for those traveling to Italy, 20 percent higher for travelers to France, and a striking 117 percent and 64 percent higher spending per person for travelers to Japan and Singapore, respectively. (Exhibit 5)

These results surprised industry watchers, as many had predicted a decline in overseas luxury spending due to the development of a stronger domestic luxury market, and a price gap between domestic and overseas luxury items that has narrowed since 2019.

Japan’s leap in spending per person is a testament to the country’s enduring appeal and as a destination for luxury and technology goods, which Chinese consumers have long favored. Singapore’s sales spike might be attributed to its status as a financial hub and shopping destination. The substantial jumps in individual spending in Italy and France, despite a drastic fall in shopper numbers, could be reflective of a “quality over quantity” shift.

As travel rebounds, the pent-up demand and accumulated wealth during the pandemic seem to be channeled into more luxurious and high-value purchases, indicating the Chinese consumer’s desire to invest in unique and high-end experiences. This early wave of post-pandemic travelers from China may skew toward wealthier consumers, as they have more disposable income and can afford the higher flight and hotel costs that are prevalent today.

While the pandemic might have temporarily stemmed the flow of Chinese tourists abroad, the floodgates have opened to a wave of affluent spenders. For businesses in destination countries , catering to this new wave of luxury-focused consumers could be key to capitalizing on this emerging market dynamic.

Super-charged EV sales

A 37 percent surge in sales of electric vehicles in 2023 drove a 6 percent rise in the overall market for passenger vehicles, which continued to grow by double-digits in the first two months of the new year. EVs now represent 35.6 percent of China’s total automotive market of 21.7 million vehicles.

The electric vehicle segment remains led by domestic brands, which held 84.5 percent share in 2023, dropping from 88.9 percent in 2019. Except for Tesla, which has carved out a notable 7.8 percent share, foreign brands have struggled to gain a foothold in China’s EV market.

While the overall size of the market for internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles is declining, foreign brands have managed to hold onto their share of this still sizeable market, which in 2023 saw sales of 14 million units. Their share rose slightly from 65.2 percent in 2019 to 66.3 percent in 2023. (Exhibit 6)

In the EV segment, Chinese brands, along with Tesla, are perceived to offer superior options, and hence command a large portion of the market.

The transition from ICE vehicles to EVs is leading to a decrease in the market share of foreign brands, supporting a widely held belief that Chinese consumers prefer domestic car brands. In reality, however, the fact that foreign brands have maintained their share of ICE vehicles dispels the notion of a “go-local” phenomenon.

The journey ahead

While early consumption data for the first two months is promising, the verdict is still out on what this means for the remainder of the year.

Given the enormous savings Chinese consumers have accumulated over the last few years, once they regain their confidence, they’ll likely increase their spending. We also reaffirm our view that the era of double-digit growth is behind us, and companies will need to adjust their expectations accordingly to thrive in an increasingly competitive market. Success will require a more granular and targeted approach. Consumer marketers will need to focus their attention on identifying fast-growing consumer segments and product categories, while tapping into the ongoing shift in consumer preferences from products to services.
