Lancia Voyager Is Down on the European Street

Vincenzo Lancia may yet rise from his grave and crush all these badge-engineering abominations.

The venerable Italian brand —bought by Fiat in 1969 and gradually bleeding out since the 1990s—is being relaunched as an all-electric marque and may well regain its former glory .

To tell that story later on, though, we need to take a look at Lancia's low point: the 2010s. That's when the purchase of Chrysler by Fiat led to Chrysler minivans with Lancia badging. I spotted a Lancia Voyager parked on the not-so-mean streets of Luxembourg City recently.

The Voyager wasn't the only Chrysler product sold in Europe with Lancia badges; the Chrysler 300 sedan became the Lancia Thema II on that side of the ocean as well, joined by the Chrysler 200 convertible with Flavia badging .

If you think American Chrysler purists were angry about the Fiat-derived Dodge Dart , just imagine the rage that European Lancia purists felt over the Voyager and Thema II. Meanwhile, Saab badges were going onto Chevy Trailblazers and Nissan Frontiers were being sold as Suzukis , proof that the world had gone completely mad.

The Voyager name has gone on many vehicles over the decades, including a Royal Navy destroyer in 1918 , a Mercury station wagon in 1957-1958, the first aircraft to fly nonstop and unrefueled around the world , various Kawasaki motorcycles since 1979 , the most-traveled vehicles in human history and, of course, the original K-car-based Plymouth Voyager minivan . After Plymouth got the axe in 2001, Chrysler badges were hurriedly pasted on US-market Voyagers for a couple of years.

The Chrysler Town & Country was sold in Europe as the Grand Voyager , and I managed to find one of those vans in Esch-sur-Alzette , the heart of Luxembourg's once-thriving steel industry. Just to keep things interesting in the far-flung Chrysler Minivan Empire, Volkswagen took a shot at selling thinly disguised Dodge Caravans as Routans in North America.

The Lancia Voyager was sold just for the 2011 through 2015 model years, after which the Ypsilon became the only Lancia model available anywhere .

Chrysler Voyager Makes a Comeback for 2020

FCA is introducing a brand new vehicle for 2020: the Chrysler Voyager.

Based on the Pacifica minivan, it will be a standalone model available at a more affordable price. We can only assume that it will eventually replace the Dodge Grand Caravan .

Under the hood is the same 3.6-litre V6 engine that powers the Pacifica. Producing 287 horsepower and 262 pound-feet of torque, it is mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. Unlike the Pacifica, however, there won’t be a plug-in hybrid model.

The 2020 Chrysler Voyager will come in L, LX and LXi trim levels, with the latter reserved for fleets.

Standard equipment will include a small 3.5-inch touchscreen. Optionally, FCA will offer a 17-inch display powered by its UConnect 4 infotainment system, which is compatible with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

While the Voyager is set to go on sale in the U.S. for 2020, the situation is different in Canada. We don’t know exactly when it will arrive here, but it won’t be next year.

The new Chrysler Voyager will be manufactured alongside the Pacifica in Windsor, Ontario.

If the name rings a bell, it’s because the Plymouth version of the Dodge Caravan sold in the 1980s was called Voyager. And since 2011, Lancia has been selling the Grand Caravan under the Voyager name across Europe.

Wireless Apple CarPlay on Chrysler Voyager, how to connect

Chrysler Voyager now supports wireless Apple CarPlay that lets you access your iPhone apps like iTunes, Google Maps and Spotify through the touchscreen of your vehicle without having to plug-in your USB cable. You can also make phone calls, send messages or use navigation with voice commands using Siri.

Enable CarPlay and Siri on iPhone

You must have iPhone 5 or newer device with iOS 7.1 or newer version to use Apple CarPlay on Chrysler Voyager – wireless CarPlay only works with iOS 9.1 or higher. Before you begin, ensure CarPlay and Siri are enabled on your iPhone. Also, make sure that the “Press Home for Siri” option is enabled under “Siri & Search” in settings.

If you can’t see CarPlay or Siri & Search under your iPhone settings, then go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps , and make sure both CarPlay and Siri & Search are enabled.

Wireless CarPlay in Chrysler

If your Chrysler Voyager has a Uconnect 5 system, available in 2022 and later models, you can access Apple CarPlay integration wirelessly over Wi-Fi.

• Enable WiFi and Bluetooth on your iPhone.

• Then on your iPhone, go to Settings and then Bluetooth .
• Select your vehicle name, which usually is “Uconnect”, on your iPhone’s Bluetooth discovery list.
• A Bluetooth Pairing Request pop-up will appear on your iPhone with a pin-code. Make sure it matches the code displayed on your Voyager’s infotainment screen (for safety reasons) and then press OK in your vehicle, also press Pair on iPhone.
• Then touch Allow on Allow Contacts and Favorites Sync prompt on your iPhone if you want to access your phone contacts via Apple CarPlay in Voyager.

• Accept Apple CarPlay terms and conditions in vehicle, if any appear.
• A message “Connecting to Apple CarPlay” will appear and then CarPlay will launch on the touchscreen.

CarPlay via USB

If your Chrysler Voyager has a Uconnect 4 system that supports Apple CarPlay, you can access features by connecting your smartphone to the USB port.

• Connect your Apple iPhone to your Chrysler Voyager USB port using an Apple-approved Lightning-to-USB cable.
• Accept Apple CarPlay terms and conditions, if any appear.
• Touch Allow on your iPhone when prompted. This allows the use of CarPlay with your Voyager while phone is locked.
• After a few seconds Apple CarPlay will launch on your Voyager’s infotainment system.

If you’re unsure which USB port supports CarPlay on your particular Voyager variant, then consult your vehicle’s owners manual – or you can try plugging in the cable, one by one, in all the USB ports in dashboard and center console.

CarPlay not working on Chrysler Voyager

If Apple CarPlay does not start on your Voyager when you plug in the USB cable and there is no CarPlay icon in the list of apps in the infotainment system, it can be due to a number of reasons:

• CarPlay is disabled in the infotainment system settings of your Voyager.
• CarPlay is disabled in your iPhone, go to ‘Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > Allowed Apps’ and enable both CarPlay and Siri.
• The Lightning-to-USB cable you’re using is defective. Try a different cable, preferably original Apple cable.
• The connected USB port on your Voyager does not support CarPlay. Try other USB ports.
• A software glitch is responsible for the CarPlay problem. Try resetting the Voyager’s infotainment system to its factory settings.
• You’ve an older model of Voyager that does not support Apple CarPlay. Only 2020 and later model year Chrysler Voyager vehicles are compatible with CarPlay.

If you still can’t connect CarPlay in your Chrysler Voyager, then you should get your vehicle checked by an authorized Chrysler dealer.

Using Siri on Chrysler Voyager

Siri is Apple’s voice recognition feature that helps you to concentrate on the road while driving your Voyager as you can control the functions of the iPhone with voice commands.

The virtual assistant allows you to place phone calls, listen to and send text messages, play music on your iPhone, get directions and use other functions of your iPhone hands-free. You can even ask Siri for current weather conditions, stock prices or upcoming events on your calendar.

To access Siri, press and hold the talk button on the steering wheel of your Voyager until you hear Siri tone.

You can also access Siri by holding down the home button located at the bottom left corner in the CarPlay app.

If the Listen for “Hey Siri” function is enabled in your iPhone device under Siri & Search settings, you can also just simply say: “Hey Siri”. After hearing the audible alert, you can begin asking Siri for assistance.

For best results when using Siri, speak clearly and reduce background noise by closing the windows and moonroof. Also, direct the air vents on dashboard so that they are not pointing towards the vehicle’s microphone.

Which Voyager models support CarPlay?

2020 and later model year Chrysler Voyager vehicles are compatible with Apple CarPlay. 2022 and later model year Voyager vehicles equipped with Uconnect 5 infotainment system support wireless Apple CarPlay.

Using Google Maps on Chrysler Voyager with CarPlay

If your iPhone has iOS 14+ operating system, you can freely use Google Maps in Apple CarPlay on your Voyager. Apple now allows the use of Google Maps in the home screen. Apple has allowed the competitor’s map service in its car application since iOS 12, but the homescreen that was newly introduced in iOS 13 in 2019 could not yet be equipped with maps. Here, users were still limited to Apple’s own map service. With iOS 14 that changes. Now CarPlay automatically selects the last service used for the view.

Using Waze navigation on Chrysler Voyager with CarPlay

You can use Waze navigation app in CarPlay if you have iOS 12 or higher operating system installed on your iPhone. Download and install Waze app from App Store on your iPhone, then start CarPlay on your Voyager’s infotainment system display. Then press Waze icon to launch the app.

Using Spotify on Voyager

You can use Spotify to stream music on your Voyager. Just install the Spotify app from App Store and its icon will appear in the infotainment display when CarPlay is active.

You can use voice commands to play music hands-free on Spotify with Siri. Just add “on Spotify” at the end so that Siri knows which service you’re referring to (e.g. “Hey, Siri, play my ‘Your Mix of the Week’ playlist on Spotify”).

Siri can play songs, artists, albums, playlists, podcasts, and more. You can also “like” music, ask what’s playing, and control playback (e.g. volume, skip song, play / pause).

Do not disturb while driving

When driving, keep your eyes on the road. A quick look at the navigation device is of course allowed in order not to miss the next junction. The “Do not disturb while driving” function can be activated so that your iPhone does not distract you with unnecessary notifications while driving your Voyager. iOS 13 extends this option to CarPlay as well. On your iPhone go to Settings > Do Not Disturb, then scroll down and touch “Activate” under “Do not disturb while driving”.

Sort apps in CarPlay

You can sort CarPlay apps in your Voyager quickly and easily through your iPhone. To do this, go to Settings > General > CarPlay , then select your vehicle under “MY CARS” . On the next screen you can rearrange app icons by touching and dragging them. You can also hide icons by touching the minus button on them.

Not all apps are compatible with CarPlay

If you think you can use all your iPhone apps in your Chrysler Voyager with CarPlay, then you’re wrong. The selection of compatible applications is limited, and you have to live with restrictions, especially with messenger apps. iMessage and WhatsApp can be controlled almost exclusively via Siri. That means you cannot see your message history, but only have new messages read out to you or even dictate messages yourself.

The following apps can be used with CarPlay on your Voyager, among others: Music, Phone, News, Podcasts, Audio books, Audible, Google Maps, Sygic TomTomGO, Whatsapp, calendar, Settings, Telegram, Waze, Spotify, TuneIn, Tidal, Pandora, Youtube Music and Amazon Music.

While the Chrysler Voyager is still available to corporate customers as a fleet-only vehicle, the consumer Voyager model has been discontinued. The current Chrysler minivan lineup for consumers includes the Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid models.

The consumer Chrysler Voyager model was discontinued in 2021.

The Chrysler Pacifica is a comfortable, spacious minivan that continues the tradition established by previous Chrysler minivan models like the Voyager and the Town & Country. If you’re looking for a hybrid or all-wheel drive minivan, the Pacifica offers those capabilities also.

You may be able to purchase a used Chrysler Voyager through your local dealer . Please note that stock is limited and your local dealer may be unable to source a Chrysler Voyager for you.

Voyager 62TE transmission problem

Hi everybody, I have a 2015 Lancia Voyager 2.8 CRD 178cv, which is the same as a Dodge Caravan or Chrysler Town&Country, with a 62TE transmission. Here is my issue : I can start the vehicle normally but I have a problem with the transmission : no matter how much I put the gear lever on D or R or else, nothing happens, it's as if I was in Neutral position each time. I'm thinking about an electronic problem more than a mechanic one, but I'm not a specialist. There is no message on the board, no suspicious noise, no liquid leak. Does anyone knows this problem ? Some ideas to know how can it be solved ? Thanks for your help, and sorry for my bad english ;-) This car is not much known in France so I ask for american help ! Camille  

Thanks for Canadian Help ;-) I could not check fluid level after the breakdown but I think fluid level was always good. I 've never seen fluid leak the days before, and neither when it brokes up. It's strange because I didn't have any problems before, never. The transmission have always been great since I buy the car one year ago. And again, no noise before and during the breakdown, just like it's stucked on Neutral despite I put the gear lever on D or R...  

Does van roll when in park? If I does you might have a broken axle.
