P&O Britannia Cabins (Tour & Review 2019)

In this post, I will be discussing all cabin grades available onboard Britannia and sharing a review of the balcony cabin that I enjoyed during my week cruise around the Norwegian Fjords. In this post we will cover:

Inside cabins

• Inside solo cabins

Sleeps up to: 4

Anybody who knows me knows that I am a lover of inside cabins. I love the price, of course, but also love the amazing night’s sleep that it provides. When I stay in an inside cabin I am more likely to get out and about to explore the ship which is an added bonus.

Inside cabins Britannia’s boutique style cabins feature a large flat screen TV for films on demand, pamper packs from The White Company, bathrooms with glass shower screens and bespoke artworks from British artists.

How big are the inside cabins on Britannia?

The inside cabins range from 137 – 181 feet which is pretty standard. The bed is two single beds which push together to make a queen. It is totally up to you how you have this. On a couple of occasions, I have been cruising with my brother and arrived to find the beds pushed together. If this happens to you, don’t worry! Just let your room steward know and they’ll be happy to change it for you.

How many people can fit in the inside cabins on Britannia?

The inside cabins can take four adults although I would urge you to think before booking this. It may be the best option but can be very cramped. I have done it in the past but wouldn’t recommend it for a long period of time. The below video was filmed onboard Royal Caribbeans Independence of the Seas and should give you an idea of how 3/4 adults can share a cabin.

It is worth noting that P&O will not push the two bottom beds together when there are guests staying above. Not sure why this is the case. Below shows the pullmen beds in the ceiling.

What is included in the cabin? (Included in all cabin grades)

All cabins come with the following as standard:

• Tea and Coffee making facilities
• Air conditioning
• Toiletries (shampoo, conditioner and moisturiser).

Solo inside cabin

Sleeps up to: 1

P&O do offer solo inside cabins. These allow solo cruisers to have their own space and it is USUALLY cheaper than paying the dreaded ‘solo supplement’. I really like the look of these solo cabins although P&O do not have a solo ‘lounge’ or any other solo space. That said I really don’t think that you would need it. I was amazed by how friendly and polite all the guests onboard were. Everybody chatted and got along, I even made a few friends onboard!

The guests onboard were so lovely that I even suggested table sharing in my ‘ 8 free ‘must do’ activities onboard Britannia ‘ post. Table sharing is something that I very rarely do but it was such a positive experience.

I am usually an inside cabin cruiser but was lucky enough to have a balcony cabin onboard Britannia. I am so glad that we did. The Norwegian Fjords are stunning and I wouldn’t want to miss a second. We even took our duvets onto the balcony one afternoon to watch the sail aways. Below is me enjoying the cabin with my inflatable Britannia!

The styling inside the cabin is exactly the same as the inside cabin. It is worth noting that some balcony cabins have a sofa/couch where as ours just had a chair.

How big is the standard balcony on Britannia?

The balcony is more than big enough. I’ve heard a lot of people complaining about the size of the balcony but I never had any issues with it. I would say that for one or two people the size is more than adequate. If 3 or 4 people wanted to go on the balcony at the same time it would be a bit of a struggle. Not impossible but you’d have to stand very close together.

It’s also worth noting that some balconies are bigger. We had the standard balcony cabin on deck 11, F111. As you can see in this picture the balconies on the deck below were much bigger. We were right at the front of the ship.

What is in the Balcony cabins onboard Britannia?

• Twin/Queen beds
• A desk with mirror + chair
• Another chair or a sofa
• Table (perfect for putting your room service on)
• Bedside tables
• Tea + Coffee making facilities

My review of the Balcony cabin F111.

I liked the cabin and can’t really find anything to fault with it. I particularly liked the separate area by the wardrobes for changing. The bathroom was pretty small, probably one of the smallest I’ve had on a ship but this wasn’t a problem at all. Cruise ship bathrooms are organised so well that everything has it’s place. The shower was actually pretty big and had a door instead of a curtain which I liked.

While onboard I filmed a video about all the little things that I loved about Britannia. In the video you’ll see the tea and coffee making facilities plus a little of the cabin.

Solo balcony cabins

As far as I know, P&O are the only cruise line to have solo balcony cabins. Please let me know in the comments if this is incorrect!

Each cabin has a single bed, the same bathroom as the bigger balconies and a balcony that is also of the same size. The decor is the same as all of the other cabins onboard. The balcony has two seats on it which I like, this means that you can bring a friend back to your cabin.

Superior deluxe balcony

Another option is a super deluxe balcony cabin. These are basically slightly bigger versions of the standard balcony cabin with a few extras.

Perfect for us as a family of 4 travelling with an 8 & 2 year old. Plenty of space, sofabed pulls out into a double bed. Curtain pulls across to separate the two sleeping areas. Large flat screen TVs in both areas. A nice sized bathroom with bath and shower over. Only real negative is once the sofabed is pulled out (around 6.30pm) and made up, you can’t access the minibar fridge or the dressing area at all as the bed is right up against it. The sofa is easily pushed away though   – Kerry 

What is the difference between a standard balcony and a super deluxe balcony?

• Extra space. The main difference is that the deluxe balcony is bigger than the standard balcony.
• Seating area – Deluxe balconies have a seating area with sofa whereas the standard balcony cabin only has a couple of chairs and a desk.
• Baths! The deluxe balconies have a bath. This one would be very tempting for me because I LOVE a bath. I’ve never had one on a cruise ship though.

Accessible cabins

P&O have 37 accessible cabins which have wider doorways, bigger bathrooms and generally more space. My gran has cruised on Britannia and was really impressed with the size of her accessible cabin. These are available on a first come first serve basis so if you need one make sure you book early.

Suites (Premium suites, Owners suites & Penthouse suite)

There are a number of suites available onboard Britannia.

The ultimate in luxury, our butler-serviced Suites offer the extra space of a lounge area (perfect for entertaining), a superior bathroom, dressing area and a broad balcony so you can take in the sights, or simply soak up the warmth of the sun in complete privacy. Choose to stay in a Suite and you’ll also be treated to some special touches.

Britannia doesn’t have any family suites, unlike Azura and Ventura.

All suites include:

• Butler service (included but optional)
• Daily canapes
• Fruit basket
• Mineral water (on arrival)
• Whirlpool bath

Types of suites

There are three types of suites. Penthouse, Owners and Premium. The Penthouse suites are the smallest. Owners suites are slightly bigger and then Premium suites are the biggest.

What plug sockets are on Britannia?

All cabins have UK plug sockets! Woohoo. There is one shaver socket in the bathroom and 5 other sockets in the rest of the cabin. Some UK and some US.

Other things to note:

• Britannia has NO oceanview or porthole cabins. At all! That’s one less option to consider I suppose.
• Britannia is the sister ship of Royal Princess. The cabins are pretty much the same but just decorated differently.
• There are 64 suites. 460 inside cabins. 27 solo cabins.

I am enjoying reading through your blogs I am not 'young' but I appreciate your reviews and comments and introductions to some cruise lines not as often discussed in North America. You asked about solo balconies - RCL offers something called 'Super Studio Ocean View with Balcony'. They can sleep two, but are smaller than standard rooms and intended for solo guests.

P&O Cruises Britannia: New look, tasty dishes and extra sparkle as popular cruise ship is given multi-million pound makeover ahead of 10th anniversary

One of Britain’s favourite cruise ships is back on the high seas and ready to sail after celebrating it’s 10th anniversary.

Britannia is one of P&O Cruises’ flagship vessels and has proved popular with holidaymakers since launching a decade ago. It emerged from a multi-million-pound refit at the weekend, ahead of its 10th anniversary cruise. The birthday makeover includes newly designed spaces as well as new experiences for travellers.

As with all good birthday celebrations, there is a new splash of colour, great food and tips from other friends within P&O Cruises’ family of ships. The makeover includes a refreshed colour palette throughout the public spaces, suites and cabins; extension of the Loyalty and Cruise Sales area; enhancements of the space and dining choices in the Market Café; and a significant investment in the crew areas. Bringing to life some of the distinctive design aspects from Iona and Arvia, the Sunset Bar has a new warm colour scheme and additional seating and the children’s splash area will see a colourful upgrade with interactive water features.

 Following the success of the luxury gelato brand Snowflake on Iona and Arvia, the Market Café will now offer Snowflake’s first gelato-filled doughnuts at sea. Flavours will include chocolate, strawberry, sea-salted caramel, praline and vanilla, wrapped in a freshly baked doughnut and covered in a choice of three toppings. P&O Cruises president Paul Ludlow said: “Britannia is our flagship, and with her 10th anniversary celebration cruise next summer we know the importance of ensuring the ship looks its absolute best to deliver an elevated experience for our new and loyal guests.”

 Britannia sets sail on the 10th anniversary celebration cruise on June 6, 2025, from Southampton, exploring the British Isles (B514). Ports of call will include Edinburgh (Newhaven), Kirkwall, Stornoway, Belfast, an overnight in Liverpool, and Cork (Cobh), with prices starting from £1,099 per person, based on two people sharing an inside cabin. More details of the celebration cruise, including special guest entertainers and other surprises, will be revealed later closer to the sailing.

Norwegian cruise line.

Launched in 2010, Norwegian Epic was the first cruise ship in the industry to feature studio accommodations for solo travelers. Norwegian Cruise Line offers this category on nine of the 19 ships in its fleet, including the newest ship, Norwegian Viva. These cabins, at an average size of 100 square feet, are designed and priced with the solo traveler in mind. They have no single supplements – and studio rooms on board Norwegian Bliss even boast virtual windows.

Guests of the studios get access to the private Studio Lounge. In this exclusive space, you can socialize with other solo travelers and enjoy complimentary refreshments. There are also singles meetups throughout the voyage and plenty of fun-filled onboard activities to mingle with like-minded cruisers. Solo travelers can check out all the fun for singles on Norwegian Viva this winter on a cruise to the Caribbean , or in spring 2024 as the ship sets sail for the Mediterranean .

MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises offers interior and balcony solo cabins for single cruisers on its Meraviglia-class ships: the MSC Meraviglia, Bellissima, Grandiosa, Virtuosa and the newest vessel in the fleet, MSC Euribia. The second-newest ship, MSC World Europa, has 28 cabins – 10 Studio Interior and 18 Studio Ocean View staterooms – designed specifically for solo travelers. MSC World America, set to debut in 2025, will also feature the solo studio staterooms.

During voyages with MSC Cruises , single cruisers are invited to a complimentary, hosted cocktail party to mix and mingle with other solo travelers. The daily program is also an excellent source to discover additional activities, entertainment and opportunities to meet other cruisers. Three of Holland America Line's newest ships each offer 12 solo cabins to accommodate single travelers: the Pinnacle-class Nieuw Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Konigsdam. These ocean view staterooms range in size from 127 to 172 square feet and feature the same amenities as the double occupancy cabins but with a double bed. The cruise line's Single Staterooms are priced for one person. If a guest chooses to book a different stateroom, single supplements for double occupancy cabins are as much as 100% over the standard fare, depending on the voyage and the cabin category.

Long committed to solo travelers, the line offers many activities where guests can meet other singles such as wine tastings, cocktail mixers, exercise classes, daily quizzes, sports challenges and more. If you're a solo traveler and a member of AARP, Holland America is now the exclusive cruise benefit provider to AARP's members. Solo cruisers will have access to an AARP member-only onboard credit that ranges from $50 to $200, depending on the itinerary and stateroom category.

For itineraries, Holland America's Alaska cruises and cruisetours are perfect for solo travelers, offering many opportunities to connect with fellow cruisers. Another favorite for singles is the line's fall voyages sailing from Boston to Québec City or Montreal.

Royal Caribbean International

Royal Caribbean International features studio staterooms on select ships that range in size from 101 to 199 square feet. These solo accommodations include interior rooms, virtual balcony staterooms and a super studio ocean view stateroom with a balcony. The cabins do not carry the single supplement fee singles encounter when booking other types of staterooms, making them an attractive option when traveling alone.

Once on board the ship, solo cruisers will have countless options to engage and socialize with other travelers. When it comes to dining with Royal Caribbean , make a reservation at the Japanese restaurant Teppanyaki for an entertaining meal with new friends, or join fellow foodies for the intimate Chef's Table experience (the dining venues vary by ship). Luxury line Atlas Ocean Voyages offers single cruisers 183 square feet of beautifully appointed space in solo accommodations that come without single supplement fees. These ocean view staterooms feature a queen bed, a panoramic picture window, a private spa bathroom with a rain shower and body jets, a stocked minifridge replenished daily with personal favorites, and other luxurious amenities. Single guests can also book other stateroom or suite categories with single supplements starting at 50% of the double occupancy price.

The line's three intimate yacht-style cruise ships – World Navigator, World Traveller and the new World Voyager, whose inaugural season begins in Antarctica in November 2023 – are all-inclusive . The line's two newest vessels, Celebrity Beyond and Celebrity Ascent (set to debut in late 2023), each boast 32 single staterooms with an Infinite Veranda. Its superyacht-style ships – Scarlet Lady, Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady – offer 40 interior cabins ranging in size from 105 to 177 square feet. The company waives the single supplement on a selection of staterooms, including its Panorama Suites, on select European and Asia departures. The company recommends booking early as the specially priced cabins do sell out. Solo travelers make up about 10% of the passengers on this river cruise line .

Avalon's fleet of Suite Ships operates in Europe and Southeast Asia and features cabins with a minimum of 172 square feet. About 80% of the staterooms are Panorama Suites, which have 200 feet of living space, beds with a view and the river cruise industry's only open-air balcony. With Avalon excursions, solo cruisers have opportunities to meet like-minded guests during immersive tours, cooking classes, wine tastings, yoga or fitness classes, biking or hiking trips, and more. Single guests can choose to dine at tables for just two people or ones that can accommodate up to eight passengers.

The line's four midsized sister ships – carrying no more than 700 passengers – are mostly all-inclusive. Amenities included in the cruise fare include most meals; standard spirits, wines and beers; bottled water, soft drinks, and specialty teas and coffees; shuttle service in port; gratuities; and complimentary AzAmazing Evenings ashore or Destination Celebration experiences on the ship. Some of the world's largest reservoirs can be found along the river, which has a symbolic meaning in Russian culture, referred to as Mother Volga (Volga Matushka) in Russian folklore and literature.

Once unthinkable as a cruise vacation destination, Russia is today more accessible than ever, with stops along its largest European lakes and rivers. For river travel lovers accustomed to European itineraries, the Russian experience will be quite different. Russia has a special feel of uniquely designed riverboats. Built to handle larger lakes (Lake Ladoga for example, is the largest European freshwater body of water), these vessels usually feature larger size and capacity (up to six decks), deeper draft, and most of them are refurbished instead of being newbuild.

The itineraries offered are activity-intensive in Moscow and St Petersburg, with long periods of cruising and less ashore time in the middle. Smaller "Golden Ring" cities (so named due to their historic significance) are full of icon-riddled monasteries and Orthodox churches. Most cruise lines hire local experts and fill the days of sailing along the river with lectures on country's history, cooking demonstrations and language lessons.

Most of the tours offered by the companies sailing along Volga River are identical, so customers choosing between the different itineraries should look at how the river ships spend the time within Moscow and St. Petersburg. Some lines have their guests stay onboard, which can be as far as 1 hour out of both cities. Others put their clients up at hotels near the center of the city, with several meals at customer's expense.

Compared with other river routes, Russia features a short season, between early May and late October, with high season in June (known as White Nights because of the endless daylight), July and August. Even if the weather is chilly, there are some advantages to sailing early or late: you'll beat the crowds which can make a visit to the Hermitage a bear. Most Russian museums lack air-conditioning, and while the climate is generally temperate, in the summer Moscow often experiences high humidity heat waves.

Remember to think about your Russian visa at least 2 months before your voyage, to have enough time to fill out the paperwork, including a lengthy online application. And don't forget that the Russian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet. Even in the cities, you'll rarely find signs in English, so learning some letters and a few phrases will help you get around.

• In 2011 was bought MS Marshal Koshevoy (from Ukrrichflot, Ukraine) but in April 2013 the ship was sold to Viking Cruises (now operates as Viking Akun ).
• In 2016, was purchased MS Tikhi Don from the UK-based Grand Circle Travel company. In 2017, the ship started operations for Orthodox Cruise Company serving international tourists.

Imperial River Cruises Russia

"Imperial River Cruises Russia" was founded in 1992 and operates on inland waterways in both Russia and Ukraine. Company's chartered ships navigate on the rivers Volga, Don, Neva, Svir, Dnieper (also on the Danube) and the Russian lakes Onega and Ladoga.

The most operated itineraries are between Moscow and St Petersburg (visiting Uglich, Kostrom, Yaroslavl, Goritzy). Specially designed itineraries visit Vladimir, Suzdal, Zagorsk, Solovki Island. Russian cruise ships

Currently, in Russia is operated a huge fleet of over 200 river cruise ships. All these vessels were built during the USSR (Soviet Union) times, roughly in the period between 1950-1990. Depending on class and series, these boats differ in terms of size, equipment (different engine designs), passenger capacity, onboard facilities and venues, cabins (types and number). Amenities additionally differ by shipowner (cruise company).

All these old-design Russian ships were completely refurbished and rebuilt for their new shipowners, Some of these ships are operated (via partnerships or under charter) also by foreign companies (like Viking, CroisiEurope, Uniworld, AMAwaterways, Grand Circle, Nicko). During their multi-million-dollar drydock refits, vessels passenger capacities were considerably reduced to improve travel comfort and safety.

Regardless of their age, all these motor ships undergo regular drydock refurbishments , machinery and safety checks, scheduled repairs (including annual surveys). Drydocks are every 5 years and include repairs, hull inspection, propulsion-steering inspection, general maintenance works.

Each ship is equipped with life-saving appliances (lifeboats and rafts) in amounts exceeding the boat's max passenger and crew capacity. Each cabin is equipped with lifejackets with illustrated instructions in several languages. All ships are equipped with modern fire-fighting systems. Crew and staff are experienced and highly professional certified employees.

• St Petersburg (Russia's second-largest city - after Moscow) was built by Tzar Peter the Great in 1703. It is located in the Neva River delta (Gulf of Finland's east coast). Saint Petersburg includes the territories of more than 130 islands interconnected by over 300 bridges. The city has a huge number of cultural and historical sights, architectural landmarks, museums, magnificent palaces (Russian Tsars' former residences), grand parks, wide avenues, bridges, numerous monuments. Among its most famous tourist attractions are the Hermitage museum (housing over 2 million pieces of art). Two days is never enough to see everything in this remarkable city. However, passengers will usually visit the Hermitage, admire the city's 19th-century architecture during a canal cruise tour, take in a cultural performance, visit one of the Versailles-style palaces in St. Petersburg's countryside (Pushkin or Peterhof).
• Moscow (Russian Federation's capital and largest city) was founded in 1147 by Prince Yuri Dolgoruky. The city was destroyed several times - by the Mongolians, Napoleon, the Nazis. The heart of the city lies in the Red Square, which contains Lenin's Tomb, St Basil's Cathedral, and GUM Department Store. Kremlin's red walls also border the square. • Yaroslavl is one of the Golden Ring cities of Russia, and the largest city to visit during the middle of your Volga cruise. The town is famous for its gorgeous churches. It also offers several pedestrian-only streets full of shops and cafes, as well as a lovely embankment used as a park.
• Uglich has a provincial setting. It was found in the 10th century and was a scene of some of medieval Russian history's most remarkable events. Here were exiled the Ivan Terrible’s 7th wife and her son Tsarevich Dmitry. Soon after, Tsarevich was mysteriously murdered here. Soon after, a dedicated to this event church ("Church of St. Demetrius on the Blood") was erected. Within the Uglich Kremlin walls is the town's oldest building - "Prince’s Palace". • Astrakhan was founded at the end of the 13th century and is located on the Volga's left bank. Port’s activities extend 100 km downstream and over 300 km upstream along the river. The city is a major trading center and its main business is freight shipping (coal, timber, salt, food, industrial products). Astrakhan is not linked to the railroad network. Cargoes are transferred by floating cranes from river ships to seagoing vessels.
• Goritsy is a small village on River Sheksna, famous for its Resurrection Convent, At approx 4 ml (7 km) from Goritsy is Kirillov - a pilgrimage site with many historical and architectural monuments. Among those are the Kirillo-Belozerski monastery, Ferapont monastery (UNESCO site), 12 churches, 25 civil monuments.
• Kizhi Island (Lake Onega) is located approx 70 km (40 ml) to the northeast of Petrozavodsk. The island has two onion-domed churches. Also here is the 17th-century-built 22-domed church - constructed without using a single nail. Its "Church of the Transfiguration of our Savior" and "Church of the Intercession" were rebuilt several times and are preserved in their original 17th-century design.
• Mandrogi (Mandroga) is a small village on the Svir river recently created as a tourist attraction. It features small wooden log cabin houses. Its “town of masters” is a market for hand-made Russian art craft, including paintings, painted wooden dolls, embroidery, pottery. Other attractions are the elk nursery and the quail farm, horse-riding tours, food tasting (pastry), vodka tasting (museum of Russian vodka).
• Kostroma is also one of the Golden Ring cities, and once was one of Russia's 3 largest cities - after Moscow and Yaroslavl, It is located at the confluence of the rivers Volga and Kostroma. Among the attractions are the St Ipathy monastery, an open-air museum (traditional wooden architecture- izbas, mills, churches are gathered in one place).
• Kizhi is famous the whole world over. It has become the symbol of the grandeur of unique Russian culture. Visiting the Kizhi Islands gives a great chance to appreciate the enchanting medieval atmosphere and get acquainted with the customs and free spirit of men living in a spacious area with a rigorous climate
• Kazan. The largest port in the Volga basin, it transships cargoes transported by water alone or by water and rail. The port receives coal from Kuznetsk Basin for Kazan's heat and electric power plant, food and industrial products, and ships out products of city's enterprises and Siberian timber. The port includes Tsentral’nyi, Kama, and Volga cargo areas, as well as a number of landings, the biggest of which is Naberezhnye Chelny and Chistopol’. The basin of the Tsentral’nyi Cargo Area and passenger area are protected by a breakwater.
• Novgorod (Nizhniy Novgorod) is an ancient stronghold founded by Gran Prince Yuri as a frontier post, is now the 5th largest city of Russia as well as one of the main centers of river tourism in the country. In the 19th century, Nizhniy became the trade center of the whole state as it was the place of the biggest fair in the Russian Empire. A proverb of that time says: "Moscow is the heart of Russia, St. Petersburg is its head, and Nizhniy Novgorod - its pocketbook". The city was renamed "Gorky" in Soviet times, in honor of the writer Maxim Gorky, born there. Until 1990, Nizhniy Novgorod was “closed” to foreigners as USSR protected its military secrets. Nizhniy Novgorod is included in the UNESCO list of 100 cities constituting world cultural and historical value.
• Samara - during the Soviet period the city was named Kuybyshev, in honor of the Soviet party figure Valerian Kuybyshev. The shortest ways from Central and Western Europe to Kazakhstan, Siberia, and Central Asia run through Samara. The city has a rich cultural heritage: Alexey Tolstoy spent his childhood and youth there. Maxim Gorky started his literary career in the city - he worked in "Samara Newspaper". The Czech writer Yaroslav Gashek also worked in Samara, during the Civil war. Famous artists like Ilya Repin, Ivan Ayvazovsky, Vasily Surikov, lived in the city. During the Great Patriotic War, the Seventh Symphony of Dmitry Shostakovich was performed in Samara for the first time.
• Tver - the White Trinity Church (1564) is the sole ancient monument of Tver as in 1763, there was a great fire after which the city was rebuilt in Neoclassical style. There are also a lot of buildings of Catherine the Great. Tver State University is highly rated in the region. In 1931, Tver received the name Kalinin, in honor of the Soviet leader Mikhail Kalinin. The city was occupied by the German army in 1941. Only 2 months later it became the first big city in Europe liberated from the occupation.
• Ulyanovsk is located on the right bank of the Kuibyshev Reservoir. Port's activities extend 90 km downstream and 100 km upstream along the Volga. The port unloads mineral construction materials, food, and industrial products for the cities of Saransk and Uljanovsk, and ships out coal from Kuznetsk Basin, automobiles, foodstuffs. Its passenger area was rebuilt in 1969 and includes a large number of landings, the biggest being Melekess and Sengilei. The basin of the port of Ulyanovsk is protected by a breakwater.
• Saratov (founded in 1590) is the capital city of a huge province that as size equals the territories of Albania, Belgium and Switzerland combined. In the late 19th century, Saratov became a center for industry and trade, Among the city's attractions, are Moskovskaya street (Europe's longest straight street), one of Europe's longest bridges (2,8 km long), children’s theater, puppet theater, Russia’s oldest circus, musical conservatory, beaches, Art Galleries, Lipki Park, two large casinos.
• Volgograd (currently Stalingrad) was founded in 1589. This is a major port and shipping hub linking Donets Basin with the Urals and Upper Volga Region. It ships grain, coal, food, and industrial products upstream and receives mineral construction materials and timber. The port’s districts are situated within the cities of Volzhsk and Volgograd (Tsentral’nyi). Kamyshin is the biggest landing belonging to the port. Among Volgograd's attractions is the Mamayev Hill with numerous sculptures devoted to the WW2 victims and topped with the world’s largest freestanding statue “Mother Russia” (height 52 m / 171 ft).
