1. Full-day Lanzarote Volcano Tour

One of the most popular tours to Timanfaya is this seven-hour excursion , which allows you to fully explore the southern part of Lanzarote. Not only will you visit Timanfaya National Park, but you’ll stop at famous sites like La Geria and the town of Yaiza. It’s a full day and one of the overall best tours in Lanzarote .

Your first stop on this Lanzarote volcano tour includes geothermal demonstrations at Islote de Hilario , Timanfaya’s Visitor Center. Here, you’ll see how the underground heat continues to rise, even though the last volcanic eruptions here took place in the 18 th century.

Montañas de Fuego, Timanfaya tours

The trip continues with the famous Route of the Volcanoes , in which you’ll ride a bus past the most incredible landscapes in the park and some of the most active volcanoes in Lanzarote . During this 35-minute bus ride, you’ll see lava flows, craters, and different shades of volcanic sand.

In addition, you’ll enjoy three hidden gems of Timanfaya. First is Los Hervideros , a series of impressive cliffs made of lava. When the waves hit the walls of the cliff, the water seems to boil, hence that name. You’ll also see El Golfo , part of a volcanic crater that offers beautiful views. Finally, visit Charco de Los Clicos , some natural pools with water that turns green from the high concentrations of sulfur.

This Lanzarote volcano bus tour ends in the town of La Geria , which is known for its vineyards and cultivation methods that were designed specifically for volcanic soil.

  • Highlights : Route of the Volcanoes, Los Hervideros, El Golfo, Charco de Los Clicos, La Geria
  • Duration : 7 hours
  • Price from : €40
  • Departs from : Costa Teguise, Arrecife, or Puerto del Carmen

If you’re fond of hiking, this guided hike is the perfect Timanfaya excursion for you. This three-hour tour will take you past craters, between calderas, and through the remains of amazing lava tunnels.

This Lanzarote volcano tour begins with pick-up service from different points on the island. If you choose the option without pick-up, you’ll have to get to the meeting point ( Finca Testeina car park) on your own.

3. Excursion to Timanfaya, Cueva de los Verdes & Jameos del Agua

One of the best Timanfaya tours is this excursion , which includes admission to Timanfaya National Park and a visit to the Cueva de los Verdes and the Jameos del Agua .

This Lanzarote volcano trip includes hotel pick-up and bus transportation to Timanfaya National Park. There, you’ll do the Route of the Volcanoes and witness the incredible landscapes of the Fire Mountains (Montañas del Fuego). The tour also includes a stop at the Visitor Center, where you’ll watch geothermal demonstrations showing you the effects of the volcanic eruptions from hundreds of years ago.

Cueva de los Verdes, lanzarote trips to volcano

Your Timanfaya National Park tour continues with a visit to the Cueva de los Verdes , one of the most famous attractions on Lanzarote. This natural cave formed after the land was upturned during an eruption, and it’s one of my favorite places on the island because it’s so unique.

The last stop is the Jameos del Agua , another area that was shaped by volcanic lava and debris. Keep your eyes peeled for tiny white crabs, an endemic species in Lanzarote. Also, this site is home to a series of gardens designed by César Manrique , the most pivotal artist from the Canary Islands.

  • Highlights : Route of the Volcanoes, Cueva de los Verdes, Jameos del Agua
  • Duration : 9 hours
  • Price from : €64
  • Departs from : Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Playa Honda, Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero, and Playa Blanca
  • Description : This tour includes hotel pick-up and drop-off, as well as bus transportation to Timanfaya National Park, Cueva de los Verdes, and the Jameos del Agua. A tour guide and admission to all three sites is included.

4. Timanfaya & Jameos del Agua trip with wine tasting

Another great volcano tour in Lanzarote is this full-day excursion that takes you to several popular attractions and a wine tasting.

This Timanfaya tour begins with a stop in Yaiza , a picturesque town overlooking the mountains and its volcanoes. While you’re here, don’t miss the opportunity to try a traditional Lanzarote drink of coffee with milk.

Afterward, immerse yourself in the landscape of Lanzarote’s west coast. This excursion to Timanfaya includes stops at Los Hervideros, Charco de Los Clicos, and El Golfo. The landscapes of each of these places are spectacular, and your tour guide will tell you all about the volcanic formations. Once in Timanfaya National Park, take the Route of the Volcanoes bus ride before ending up at the Visitor Center, where you’ll see some interesting demonstrations.

Jameos del Agua, volcano tours lanzarote

The day trip continues with a visit to Mancha Blanca , another charming Lanzarote town that’s known for its Canarian architecture, specifically its church. Then, continue through the wine region of La Geria , where you’ll learn about the local methods used to cultivate wine in the volcanic soil. Of course, you’ll get to taste some of the best wines in the area.

The last leg of this Lanzarote volcano tour ends with amazing views of the Valley of 1,000 Palms , one of the highest viewpoints on the island. You’ll also see one of the most beautiful spots in Lanzarote, the Jameos del Agua , an underground tunnel formed by ancient volcanic eruptions.

  • Highlights : Yaiza, Timanfaya, Mancha Blanca, La Geria, Valley of 1,000 Palms, Jameos del Agua
  • Duration : 10 hours
  • Price from : €56
  • Departs from : Costa Teguise, Arrecife, Puerto del Carmen, Puerto Calero, Yaiza, and Playa Blanca
  • Description : This tour includes admission to Timanfaya National Park, the Jameos del Agua, and pick-up/drop-off service. You’ll be led by a professional tour guide and enjoy a wine tasting. The tour doesn’t include Timanfaya camel rides.

5. Timanfaya volcano tour from Fuerteventura

If you’re visiting Fuerteventura, I recommend taking this one-day tour to explore Lanzarote and discover its volcanic landscape. This excursion to Timanfaya includes a wine tasting in the wine region of La Geria, as well as a stop at Charcos de Los Clicos.

After getting picked up from your hotel, you’ll travel to the Port of Corralejo. From there, board the express ferry to Playa Blanca , a town on the coast of Lanzarote and the starting point for this Lanzarote volcano bus tour .

Route of the Volcanoes, volcano lanzarote tour

The first site you’ll visit is Timanfaya National Park, home to a unique volcanic environment and lots of geothermal activity. Your Lanzarote volcano tour continues to La Geria , where you’ll learn about the island’s extraordinary wine production process. Also, you can sample some delicious local wines while admiring the ash-covered vineyards.

Next, check out the southern coast of Lanzarote and see the Charco de Los Clicos and its dreamy cliffs. Finally, you’ll take the ferry from Playa Blanca back to the island of Fuerteventura.

  • Highlights : Timanfaya National Park, La Geria, Charco de Los Clicos
  • Departs from : Fuerteventura (Corralejo, Castillo/Caleta de Fuste)
  • Description : The tour includes admission to Timanfaya National Park and a wine tasting. Enjoy pick-up service and a round-trip ferry from Fuerteventura to Lanzarote.

6. Camel ride, one of the most popular Timanfaya tours

Although this particular excursion in Timanfaya is very popular, I don’t recommend it. Personally, I think you can enjoy all that Timanfaya National Park has to offer without doing this type of tour.

We visited the park and took the Timanfaya tour by bus, along the Route of the Volcanoes. This allowed us to go further into the park and see a wider variety of incredible landscapes. Best of all, we didn’t have to disturb any animals.

Echadero de Camellos, lanzarote volcano tour

If you still want to do this Timanfaya camel tour, this camel ride follows an authorized footpath where you can appreciate Lanzarote’s volcanic environment. The tour has a pick-up service that can collect you from your hotel and transport you to the Echadero de Camellos . The camel ride itself lasts 25 minutes.

Also, this tour ends with a stop at a small museum in Timanfaya, where you’ll learn about the camels and how they’re able to withstand the high desert temperatures.

  • Highlights : Timanfaya National Park
  • Duration : 30 minutes
  • Price from : €23
  • Departs from : Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, and Arrecife
  • Description : This tour includes hotel pick-up and drop-off along with a 25-minute camel ride.

That’s it for these Lanzarote volcano tours ! I hope this guide helps you decide which tour to take, but if you have any questions, feel free to leave me a comment below. I’ll be happy to help you out. Until then, enjoy your tour through Timanfaya National Park!

Description of this tour

Lanzarote is built on fire and lava.

On this tour you will discover the area destroyed by the volcanoes of the eighteenth century, and one of the main natural attractions of the island, the Timanfaya National Park. We also visit the volcano El Golfo with the green Lagoon, The cliffs Hervideros, Salinas de Janubio, Camel park and the wine region of La Geria.

In the Hilario Islet, already in the Timanfaya National Park, we will appreciate with three demonstrations  the high temperatures that are still recorded in the shallow earth to the geothermal anomalies of the zone. You can see how the heat of the earth is used for cooking and enjoy the views from the windows of the Restaurant El Diablo, a work of Cesar Manrique. It will be from the Islet of Hilario, from where we will leave by bus to make the impressive Route of the Volcanoes that takes us through the most protected area of the national park.

"Half the beauty depends on the landscape and the other half of the man who looks at it" (Lin Yutanq)

During the excursion we also visit the coast of Timanfaya making a first photographic stop in Los Hervideros, cliffs where the sea crashes hard creating a visual spectacle of great beauty and a second stop by the volcano El Golfo, one of the most beautiful volcanoes in the Canary Islands, to enjoy the views over the green lagoon or Charco de los Clicos.

On the way to La Geria, we will enjoy a panoramic view of the Salinas de Janubio, from the beginning of the 19th century, considered the most important salt pans of the Canaries. In La Geria, you can appreciate the vines cultures and taste the Lanzarote wine.

Went on the south tour of the island and everything was excellent

Nice and enjoyable tour.

I really enjoyed the excursion, all the places we visited were interesting. Eric was very nice and he knows everything about Lanzarote. Good value for the money!

Both the tours we took with you were fabulous. Everthing, from pick up to drop off was faultless. Guides were informative. Lunch on both days was teally enjoyable.

Trip was good, but the lunch need to be improved for sure! Wish the ground tour operated more frequency rather than south tour. the tour guide lady took care of me very well since I was the only japanese in the tour. hope to join other tour in your company next time when I visit Lanzarote!!

Great tour. Lovely guide.

Tour guide was very helpful. Overall experience was excellent and would definitely book again

Service: Excursion South Tour 08/06/2015 The excursion was well-organized, attractive, informative with no hurry. I saw unusual, breathtaking, beautiful landscapes, learnt much about the volcanos and people of Lanzarote, their life and I spent enough time on all sites. The guide was brilliant! Enormous knowledge, fluent in 3 languages, helpful, smiling. I disliked only the crowd at the presentation of the "geyser", we stood in three row around it. I suggest performing it in two parts for the group. I enjoyed the whole excursion very much. Kind regards, Miklos Lantos Budapest

Alejandro R

Wine in the food was terribly bad.

Eric, the guide was very good on both the trips we went on

Visit Timanfaya National Park - Best Day Trip in Lanzarote

timanfaya national park

Timanfaya National Park is one of Lanzarote's top attractions, with more than 1 million visitors annually, which makes the second most visited National Park in the Canary Islands, after Teide National Park.

What to see and do inside Timanfaya National Park

How to visit timanfaya national park, timanfaya visitor center, montañas del fuego (mountains of fire) bus tour, el diablo restaurant, camel rides, timanfaya national park walking tours, should you visit timanfaya national park.

Visiting Timanfaya National Park is a unique experience, which should not be missed by anyone coming on holiday to Lanzarote. You'll get to see a one of a kind landscape, made up of volcanic soil and rocks, which makes you feel like you're on another planet, due to its resemblance to the moon.

Facts about Timanfaya National Park

The park that we see nowadays was formed due to volcanic activity in the area and the largest eruptions date back to the year 1730 to 1736, which was a period of continued eruption that led to the landscape that we know today as Timanfaya National Park.

The park Timanfaya covers a great portion of Lanzarote as a whole, spread over 51,07 km²  in the southwest side of the island, in the municipalities of Yaiza and Tinajo.

There are over 25 volcanoes located inside the national park, but only one of them is still active: Timanfaya volcano, which is why the park was named after it.

visit timanfaya lanzarote

The volcanic landscape inside the national park is the main attraction and there are several ways to explore it.

The vast majority of the park can only be accessed by a bus tour, which takes you through the volcanoes in a guided tour that is available in various languages. There's also the possibility of exploring the park through guided walks on designated paths, but you need to book your spot ahead of time.

Inside the park, there's also a visitor's center where you can learn more information, a restaurant called El Diablo, an area for camel rides and a free car park where you can leave your car if you decide to drive here on your own.

So the main attractions in Timanfaya National Park are:

  • Timanfaya Visitor Center in Mancha Blanca - we recommend stopping here before going on the bus tour
  • Audio guided bus tour inside the Timanfaya National Park
  • El Diablo restaurant - how does it sound to try food that was cooked using the heat of an active volcano?
  • Guided walks , which must be booked way ahead of time
  • Camel rides - if you're interested, you can ride a camel and see a bit more of the volcanic landscape

bus tour timanfaya

From the Visitor Center you need to drive further along the road LZ-67, then turn onto LZ-602 when you see the symbol of El Diablo, which is the trademark for the park and was designed by none other than Cesar Manrique himself.

When you get to the car park you need to find a spot for the car and then wait for the next tour bus to leave.

Access to Timanfaya National Park is restricted in order to protect the landscape, so you can't drive around the park yourself and you can't go on foot either since it is strictly forbidden.

Once you get to the car park near El Diablo restaurant you need to wait to get on the next guided bus tour, with professional drivers from the park, who know the roads inside and out.

Even if you come with an excursion, you will need to change buses and go with one of the park's guided bus tours.

Tip for the bus tour inside Timanfaya National Park: if possible, try to sit on the opposite side from the driver on the bus. This side has slightly better views, but no matter where you stay don't worry since everyone stands up at the interesting bits in order to see the landscape on both sides.

The guided bus tour is available in several languages and it takes around 40 - 45 minutes.

The roads inside the park are narrow and windy, which may make some visitors scared and uncomfortable, but there is no need to worry, since the roads are only used by the park's buses, so there's no oncoming traffic.

Tips for the bus tour at Timanfaya National Park:

  • Where to sit on the bus: sit on the right side of the bus if possible
  • Tours take around 45 minutes for a complete route around the park
  • Visit the park early in the morning (between 9 am and 11 am) or after 3 pm in order to avoid queues if you visit by car
  • Buses stop at various points around the park for photos and for people to see the landscape on both side of the road.
  • You are not allowed to exit the bus during the tour, in order to preserve the park.
  • Since you'll only be able to take photos from inside the bus, your photos will have the reflection from the glass window.
  • You can still take some nice photos around the car park before or after going on the bus tour.

Steam geyser at Timanfaya National Park

geyser timanfaya lanzarote

Before or after the bus tour, make sure to ahead next to the restaurant El Diablo, where there's an employee of the park who pours water in order to demonstrate the high temperature of the volcanic, which forms a steam geyser when the cold water gets in contact with the hot volcanic soil.

el diablo restaurant volcano cooking timanfaya

This is the only restaurant in the area, so if you're hungry or you simply want to take a break and get a coffee, this is the only place where you can do that.

The main selling point of Restaurant El Diablo is the fact that they cook most of their meat on a grill which "uses" the heat coming from the volcano. So if you really want a unique experience when visiting Timanfaya National Park, give this restaurant a try. Food is nothing to write home about, but it's not bad either, albeit a bit more expensive, due to its exclusive location inside a national park. A once in a lifetime experience, which is worth it if you don't have very high expectations.

camel ride timanfaya national park lanzarote

There is the possibility of riding camels when coming to visit the national park Timanfaya.

Although this is not a tourist activity that we encourage, it is still a popular thing to do for many visitors to the park. It costs around €6 per person to ride a camel and the journey lasts around 20 minutes, while you get to see a bit more of the volcanic landscape.

Besides the bus visit, there's also the possibility of seeing a bit of the park by going on guided walks with one of the park's rangers.

  • READ MORE: Timanfaya National Park Walks

We have a dedicated article on the topic, where we explain what these routes and how you can book a spot to go on them. Just keep in mind that you need to book months ahead of time since there are very few spots available.

Honestly, for most people coming to Lanzarote, this is not a viable option for seeing Timanfaya National Park, since there are so few places available on these tours.

Also, due to the rugged landscape of the volcanic park, there aren't any places to hide from the sun along the way on these walks, so if you're visiting during the summer, for example, it will be extremely hot and hard to bear the sun and heat during the walk.

volcano timanfaya lanzarote

Is Timanfaya National Park worth it? And is it a good place to visit with kids?

In our opinion, YES it is very much worth a visit and depending on your child's age it will be an interesting place to see.

The landscape inside the park is truly unique and out of this world, formed only by volcanic rocks from the past eruptions, which give you a sense of how the Lanzarote we know today was formed.

Around the area there are several other places to explore if you want to know more about Lanzarote's fiery past:

  • Los Volcanes Natural Park
  • Los Hervideros
  • The lava fields between Los Hervideros and El Golfo
  • Beaches with black volcanic sand and volcanic rocks

One last suggestion for visitors: please don't take any volcanic rocks with you as souvenirs. Keep in mind that they were formed by volcanic eruptions hundreds of years ago and there's no way of creating new rocks, unless a new eruption occurs, which is not something anyone wishes to happen. So be considerate and admire the landscape, but leave it intact for future guests to enjoy it as well.

The volcanoes of Lanzarote – the essentials

What volcanoes can you see in lanzarote.

  • Timanfaya National Park
  • Montana Cuervo
  • Montana Colorada

La Corona volcano

It’s not easy to choose, but with these 4 activities, you have a good overview. In this article, we take a closer look at each of them.

If you don’t want to drive, there are many tours of Timanfaya and other volcanic sites – see options .

Recent volcanoes on Lanzarote

Origin of Lanzarote’s volcanoes

  • Over the course of Lanzarote’s history, several eruptions have shaped the island.
  • The La Corona volcano, now extinct, was created 4,000 years ago.
  • But many of them were caused by the famous 6-year eruption that took place between 1730 and 1736. It destroyed 26 villages and hamlets, as well as numerous farms.

How many volcanoes are there in Lanzarote?

Lanzarote is sometimes called the island of 1000 volcanoes. Because everywhere you look, they’re there. Well, 1000 is not the number. And it depends on what you call a volcano, how you count small frames and all. It’s more like a few hundred.

Eruption risks – are Lanzarote’s volcanoes active?

Before setting off on your trip, you may be wondering: will Timanfaya erupt again? What is the risk of eruption on Lanzarote? Lanzarote and Fuerteventura are located on the African Rift. It is thought that “if an eruption were to occur, volcanologists could give advance warning, but it would be difficult to say where on the island the eruption would occur” (according to volcanocafé ).

What are the mountains of fire on Lanzarote?

The Lanzarote Mountains of Fire are the most famous part of the island. They correspond to the volcanoes inside Timanfaya National Park. It’s called Montanas del Fuego in Spanish. And it’s a Unesco Biosphere Reserve .

These volcanoes are located on the western side of Lanzarote, in an area affected by the eruption that lasted 6 years, from 1730 to 1736. It’s famous for being one of the most spectacular eruptions on Earth, and for changing the shape of the island.

In the national park, you can find many volcanoes of different colors. But many of them have a reddish color, and when the sun rises or sets, they seem to be on fire.

Timanfaya, the main volcanic attraction

The part of the island that is protected in a national park is accessible to visitors. However, the main area can only be explored from a bus that circles the area on a single road. Along the way, you can see smooth and rough lava flows, and numerous craters. There are a few organized walks in other sections of the park, but places are limited. Read more about Timanfaya National Park .

Volcanoes of the Mountains of Fire Lanzarote

The main activity is the bus tour. Even if you can’t stop anywhere along the way (to protect the environment), it’s well worth it. The views are very impressive. You can book a half-day excursion from any of the resorts. Find out more here. Or combine with lava tube tours. Superb day trip! Read more

Lanzarote Volcanic Restaurant and Grill

The tour also includes 2 impressive experiences near the parking lot. They show just how hot it still is underground (600°C at 10m below the surface):

  • when they pour water into holes creating mini-geysers
  • when they see how things catch fire

It’s right next door to the famous Lanzarote volcano restaurant, where steaks and fish are cooked on a “volcanic grill” using only the Earth’s heat.

Other Lanzarote volcanoes to discover

Montana cuervo – our favourite.

Our favorite volcano is Montana Cuervo. We have a passion for all things volcanic. We love to see the power of the Earth and we really appreciate the colors and shapes created by the lava. As soon as we saw Cuervo, we fell in love with it, despite the fact that it’s the most visited after Timanfaya. We think it has a beautiful shape and a very deep, hypnotic color.

The advantage is that a path has been laid out around the volcano, offering breathtaking views of the lava flows, the crater and the surrounding volcanic area. You can even take a detour to enter the crater!

Montana Cuervo - Volcano in Lanzarote

Montaña Colorada

Another great hike in the Parc Naturel des Volcans. Red Mountain was the last to erupt at the eastern end of the Mountains of Fire fault line (in the 18th century). This is a fascinating region where you can learn more about volcano eruptions and their geological features (e.g. the giant volcanic bomb). You can walk around the crater. Along the way, you’ll see the many colors of the rock. And don’t miss the giant volcanic bomb. Unfortunately, no one was there when we were, so we don’t have a benchmark to give you an idea of size.

Montaña Colorada

Montaña Los Rodeos

A beautiful walk in the middle of a sea of lava, where some parts are very impressive. We loved it, as we were fascinated by the huge chunks of cracked lava. The trail then skirts the volcanoes and climbs to offer breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape and volcanoes. During the second half, you skirt the steep end of the lava! The climb is steep and slippery, but even if you only do a small part of it, the views are worth it!

Los Rodeos

The La Corona volcano is essential to understanding the formation of Lanzarote. Its eruption led to the merger of two territories, creating the island of Lanzarote. Today, the volcano reaches an altitude of 600m. The hike offers magnificent views of the island. The path takes you past vineyards and then on to the crater.

La Corona volcano

Caldera Blanca

The Caldera Blanca (White Crater) is an extinct volcano over two million years old. It was formed by a single volcanic eruption, and is one of the largest craters on the islands (1,200 meters in diameter). The hike takes you through a vast volcanic area, a sea of lava dating from the eruptions of 1730 to 1736. Then it’s a steep but fairly short climb up to the crater. Then you can go all the way around the crater, but if you’re tired, you can simply turn around and go back to the parking lot.

Caldera Blanca

Montana Negra

Thanks to its central location, the views from the summit of Montana Negra are among the best on Lanzarote. The steep ascent takes you up to 509 m above sea level, with direct views of Montana Colorada and Montana Cuervo. Montana Negra is an older volcano than its neighbors, which have covered it with black pyroclasts during their explosions. 45min round trip to the summit.

Montana Negra

Montana Roja

This volcano is located right next to the seaside resort of Playa Blanca, but few people climb this mountain to enjoy the view! Overlooking the town, Montana Roja (the red mountain, because of its color) is a volcanic crater that rises to 194m. It has a diameter of 350m. A beautiful walk takes you to the top and around the edge with superb views of the southern tip of Lanzarote. On a clear day, you can also enjoy views of Lobos Island and the north coast of Fuerteventura. This is one of our favorite activities at Playa Blanca .

Attractions linked to volcanic eruptions in Lanzarote

Where there are volcanoes, you can also discover amazing volcanic formations. Sometimes they are even more fascinating than the craters themselves. Here are just a few examples of what you can find on the island of Lanzarote.

Jameos del Agua Lanzarote

Jameos del Agua Lanzarote - Restaurant

One of Lanzarote’s most famous visits is to Jameos de Agua. This is a lava tunnel where certain sections have collapsed, creating open caves or ‘jameos’. César Manrique reimagined the space and it now boasts a restaurant, a lake with white crabs, a swimming pool and an amphitheater. The architecture is perfectly integrated with nature. One of the most unique places we’ve visited in the world. Read more about Jameos del Agua .

Lanzarote caves – Cueva de los verdes

Lanzarote caves - Cueva de los verdes

Another part of the same lava tube remained wilder, with only lights installed by artist Jesus Soto. The lava tube was created by the Montana Corona eruption. It is 6 km long and ends underwater. It’s a completely different experience, as it’s completely enclosed underground. See our article on Cueva de los Verdes .

Los Hervideros

Los Hervideros Lanzarote lava

One of our favorite landscapes in Lanzarote is Los Hervideros. It’s a place south of Timanfaya where lava flow has met the ocean, creating fascinating shapes and cliffs. What’s more, erosion has also taken its toll, and you can admire the caves and explore the lava. More photos in our article on the Los Hervideros lava cliffs .

Volcanic vineyards of Lanzarote

Lanzarote vineyards

Another of Lanzarote’s famous excursions is to the vineyards, unique because of the volcanic landscape. As a result of the eruption, much of the ground was covered with lava, which is not very good for agriculture. Especially as it rarely rains on Lanzarote. However, the locals discovered a way of growing grapes using picon (small volcanic rocks like gravel). It captures moisture and provides plants with water even when it’s not raining.

Tips for hiking around volcanoes

  • As we’ve already written, the ground is mainly covered with solidified lava. Stay on the path! Don’t step on the lava! First of all, it’s sharp and you can’t stand up well. Secondly, there may be caves beneath the lava and you risk falling suddenly.
  • Wear appropriate footwear. Most of the time, the path is made of picon, so it feels between sand and gravel and can be tiring on the leg. High-coverage shoes may be even better to prevent small stones from penetrating your shoes. We kept pulling them off ours…
  • Cover your head and apply sunscreen. The sun is really harsh. We had forgotten about the first day and were soon burnt out.
  • Bring plenty of water. There’s no shadow at all.
  • But it’s worth it!!!

Timanfaya National Park and the volcanoes in Lanzarote

The austere, otherworldly landscape of Lanzarote is shaped by hundreds of volcanic cones. Many of them date back to a series of devastating eruptions in the 1730s. For six years from 1730 to 1736, volcanic activity covered 200 square km of fertile farmland with layers of ash and lava.

Timanfaya National Park in Lanzarote Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

It destroyed up to 20 villages and caused most of the island’s inhabitants to flee to nearby islands. Part of this area now forms the Timanfaya National Park, one of the most popular attractions in Lanzarote.

The parish priest at Yaiza wrote in his diary “ a gigantic mountain rose and sunk back into its crater on the same day with such a terrifying sound, covering the island with stones and ashes. The fiery lava streams descended like rivers towards the sea with the ash, rocks and dense smoke making life impossible .”

Timanfaya National Park

A slice of the surreal moonscape left by the cooling lava was established in 1974 as the Timanfaya National Park. The whole of Lanzarote was declared a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in 1993, in recognition of this unique landscape.

Most of the volcanoes in Lanzarote are now dormant, but you can visit the Montañas del Fuego or Fire Mountains within the park. Here you can feel the heat of the volcanic activity at first hand.

Los Volcanes National Park Lanzarote Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

A visit to the Timanfaya National Park is one of the most popular things to do in Lanzarote. There are numerous guided tours that will take you there. However, it’s easy to visit independently, so long as you have a hire car.

Timanfaya National Park covers around 50 square km of the whole volcanic landscape. It’s worth knowing that the less well known Parque Natural de los Volcanes covers a further 100 square km around Timanfaya. This offers even more opportunities to experience the Lanzarote volcanoes.

Montañas del Fuego in Timanfaya National Park

From the ticket booth on the LZ-67 road, a short drive takes you to the start point for the Montañas del Fuego . Leave your car in the car park and take one of the coaches waiting to take you on the tour that’s included with your ticket. Cost of the ticket is €12 per adult payable at the ticket booth by the main road.

As far as the eye can see are the lava fields and volcanoes that were created in the eruptions of the 1730s. These eruptions have created a lunar landscape of rich brown and copper red.

Through this has been carved a single track road called the Ruta de los Volcanes . This road makes a loop through the national park with striking views and occasional steep drops.

Tip: If you plan to do a lot of sightseeing, you can get a joint ticket from CACT Lanzarote which covers to Montanas del Fuego and 5 other attractions for €35.

The coach tour on the Ruta de los Volcanes

You can’t walk or drive the Ruta de los Volcanes in your own car. The tour is in a standard size coach, which does have some limitations. Although there was an interesting recorded commentary played in several languages, the only opportunities for photos are through the coach windows.

We had a couple of quick photo stops to take photos from the coach doorway, but were not allowed to get out. We found there were better photo opportunities once we had returned to the car park from the terraces below the El Diablo restaurant.

Tip: As time is limited, if you want to take photos, try to sit close to the coach doorway so that you are first in the queue to take photos.

Timanfaya – Geothermal demonstrations

The Montañas del Fuego or Mountains of Fire, are named after the location at Islote de Hilario which still has some volcanic activity. On finishing the coach tour, we were directed to the terrace below the El Diablo restaurant to get a flavour of this at first hand.

The red gravel on which we stood was warm to touch. Through a hole in the earth, our guide demonstrated that the hot magma was not far below. The few branches of brushwood that were tossed down burst into flames in the heat.

El Diablo Restaurant at Timanfaya National Park Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Next the guide demonstrated a geyser effect by pouring a bucket of water into a hole in the ground which trickles down to the hot volcanic rock. Stand well back and a few seconds later a geyser of steam erupted high into the air before subsiding again – impressive!

If you don’t have a car you may want to book this half day tour that includes the camel ride and tour of the Montañas del Fuego .

The geyser in Timanfaya National Park

Timanfaya – El Diablo restaurant

The El Diablo restaurant can be visited before or after the tour. Here the volcanic heat is put to good use in a natural barbeque created by a deep pit. Over this a grill is placed, to cook chicken and other meats.

El Diablo Restaurant at Timanfaya National Park Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

The El Diablo restaurant was designed by Lanzarote artist, Cesar Manrique. It has a circular shape with wrap around windows that offer panoramic views over the volcanic landscape.

The restaurant offers a broad menu and a cafeteria for sandwiches. If you stop for lunch there it’s worth trying the grilled items that are cooked over the volcanic pit, if only for the sheer novelty value.

El Diablo Restaurant at Timanfaya National Park Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Timanfaya – Take a camel ride

A short drive in the direction of Yaiza brings you to the Echadero de Camellos or camel station. A train of camels is waiting here to take visitors on a ride along a well worn track that runs through the park. The cost is €12 per camel for two people and the ride takes around 20 minutes.

Check out my 7-day itinerary for hiking in La Gomera in the Canary Islands

Camels in Timanfaya National Park Lanzarote Photo Iulian Ursu

No need to book, just turn up and you can pay the camel handler directly and enjoy (or not) the swaying ride around the park. There is also a small gift shop and museum next to the car park. Here you can see information about the part these camels have played in the agriculture of Lanzarote. Camels can survive on very little water and are traditionally used for ploughing and farm work.

I didn’t have time to take a camel ride myself and am quite cautious about animal tourist attractions. But from what I read, the camels are well looked after. They are a domestic farm animal on Lanzarote so would be used to working on the land. However animal lovers will need to take their own view on whether it’s an activity they want to try.

For a fun day out, we recommend taking a full day tour like this one that includes the Timanfaya National Park as well as many other attractions around Lanzarote.

Timanfaya – the visitor centre

The Timanfaya park visitor centre is i n a separate location beside the main road that runs through the park. It’s a short drive from the Montanas del Fuego in the direction of Mancha Blanca.

The centre is free and well worth a visit to learn more about the volcanic activity in Lanzarote and around the world. Walk around the colourful displays, with videos of lava flow and volcano models. The interactive screens display more about how volcanoes affect our planet.

Visitor Centre at Timanfaya National Park Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

At the back of the centre is a viewing platform. Look out at the black sea of lava that flowed across the fertile farmland, covering numerous villages in the 1730s.

I also happened to be visiting when there was a simulation of the volcanic eruption, which took place in a separate basement room. The rumbling of the eruption, clouds of smoke and coloured lights brought to life the prospect of living close to an erupting volcano. It was a terrifying reality Lanzarote had to endure.

Parque Natural de los Volcanes

Many visitors to Lanzarote head to the Timanfaya National Park. However, this is only one slice of the whole area of volcanic landscape left from past eruptions. Much of the rest is covered by the Parque Natural de los Volcanes . Here there are various trails and information boards that you can visit freely.

Take a volcano tour in Lanzarote

We took a fascinating tour of some of the volcanoes with Eco-insider , a tour company that specialises in small group tours . These tours give you authentic insights into the culture and landscape of Lanzarote.

The benefit of making a tour like this is that we could leave our car behind and travel by land rover. This enabled us to get close to the volcanoes as well as learning all about them from an expert guide.

Flora and fauna of the lava fields

Our guide Carmen, from Eco-insider tours is an expert on the flora and fauna of Lanzarote. She brought to life the seemingly barren volcanic landscape, explaining that it is far from dead.

Most plants here are annual and they are adapted to the lack of rain with techniques for conserving water. They only break into leaf or bloom when there has been a shower of rain.

Montaña Colorado in Lanzarote Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

The green lichen covering the lava fields is a sign that the air is pure and the land has been undisturbed since the eruption. Carmen explained that lichen are the pioneer plants as they grow before anything else. They help to break down the rocks to create soil for other plants to colonise. The lichen can survive where no other plants can, drawing on moisture brought by the trade winds blowing from the north-east.

Among the soft green lichen were patches of Xanthoria parietina . It’s yellow color provided a splash of colour against the grey rocks. The Xanthoria lichen are a sign to hunters that there are animals living nearby, since they thrive on the excrement of birds and animals.

Volcanic crater – Caldera Blanca

Our first stop on the 3 Volcanoes tour was the Caldera Blanca or Montañas Blanca . This is one of the most popular of the volcanoes in Lanzarote to visit. The Caldera Blanca trail runs from Mancha Blanca where the Ruta Volcan Caldera Blanca takes you west out of the town to a car park.

From there you can walk the rest of the trail past the smaller Montana Caldereta to the volcanic cone of Caldera Blanca . The trail is also known as Los Islotes – the islets. The rivers of lava from the 1730s flowed round volcanic cones from earlier eruptions. These older volcanoes stand out like islands in a sea of lava.

Caldera Blanca in Lanzarote Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Climbing Caldera Blanca

As part of our 3 volcanos tour with Eco-insider, we could shortcut the long walk and take our landrover along the dirt tracks to park near the base of the volcano. From here we took an easy trail, climbing gently up the side of the montana, looking down on the land rover like a toy car below.

After the recent rains, the dry vegetation on the slopes was springing into life. The green mounds of Euphorbia looked fresh and lush, where they might normally resemble a bunch of dry twigs.

Caldera Blanca in Lanzarote Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

After the short climb we reached the top of the cone of Caldera Blanca. From here we could look down into the crater, with views towards the coast and ocean.

This volcano predates the eruptions of the 1730s when the lava flowed around it. The Blanca name comes from the white caliche material on the sides of the crater, which was used for agriculture in the past.

This was my favourite of the three volcanoes we visited. I loved the views from the top over the Timanfaya volcanic landscape and the sea beyond.

Volcano National Park in Lanzarote Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Volcanic bomb – Caldera Colorada

Our next stop was Montana Colorada – also known as Caldera Colorada. Here there is an easy, circular route, although you are not permitted to climb to the top of the volcanic hill. This volcano was one of the last to erupt in 1736 and makes a relatively low mound. This is typical of a one off eruption that stands above the landscape.

Montaña Colorado in Lanzarote Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Our focus here was the huge volcanic bomb standing in front of Montana Colorada. It was formed in one of the nearby eruptions that had ejected it from a crater. Carmen explained that experts have concluded it was more likely to have come from some distance away. Then it was carried along on one of the lava flows.

Volcanic crater – Caldera de los Cuervos

Our final visit on the 3 volcanoes tour was to Caldera de los Cuervos . This was formed during the eruptions of the 1730s. It was the first to erupt on 1 September 1730 with a single crater at the heart of the volcano.

The pool of lava eventually ruptured the crater wall on one side. This allowed the lava to flow out into the plain surrounding it, covering some of the nearby hamlets.

Caldera de los Cuervos Lanzarote Photo Heatheronhertravels.com

Caldera de los Cuervos is one of the few volcanoes that you can walk right into, to see the different types and colours of volcanic rock. Some of the lava was splattered out from the crater to form molten piles around the top of the cone. In other places it formed jagged heaps where the lava cooled and then was broken up by further flows pushing it forward.

Close to this caldera is Montagna Negra . This volcano is several thousands of years old and pre-dates the 1730s eruptions. During the Timanfaya eruptions, older volcanoes such as this became covered with volcanic material, giving it the black colour that gives it its name.

Taking a volcano tour in Lanzarote

We can highly recommend taking a volcano tour in Lanzarote, such as the 3 Volcanoes tour we took with Eco-insider. The volcanic landscape is such a unique part of this island and we learned so much more by exploring it with the insights of a guide. Carmen was able to bring alive the history and geology of what we were seeing.

Take a volcano walk in Lanzarote

Although you can’t hike within most of the Timanfaya National Park, there are a few hiking trails among the volcanic area of Lanzarote. If you are a serious hiker, it’s best to use a guidebook as some paths may be visible but forbidden. In general you need to stick to the obvious trails. For most of the trails you will need a hire car to get you to the start of the trail.

Caldera Blanca / Montana Blanca – Within the Parque Natural de los Volcanes, the Ruta Volcan Caldera Blanca is accessed from the small town of Mancha Blanca. Drive west from the town, turning off the LZ67 until you find the Car Park for the Volcanic trail. The trail leads through the badlands or malpais as the lava fields are known. It passes the smaller Caldereta, before you reach Caldera Blanca. You can climb to the top as we did and walk right around the rim of the crater for views towards the coast. The round trip can be completed in a few hours.

Tremesana Route – This trail can only be walked with a guide, as it passes through the Timanfaya National Park. Registration must be made online in advance. If you enquire at the Timanfaya Park visitor centre, you may be able to join a group at short notice if there is space. The guided walk is free and runs four times a week, taking around 3 hours. More information here .

More volcano walks

Montana Colorada / Caldera Colorada – This easy trail runs around the volcanic cone but you are not allowed to climb up it. Beside the trail you’ll find the huge volcanic bomb which is worth a short detour. For this trail take the LZ-56 that runs south from La Mancha and stop at the car park on the eastern side of the road.

Caldera de los Cuervos / Volcan el Cuervo – Take the LZ56 that runs south from La Mancha. There’s a car park on the west side of the road, a little further than the car park for Montana Colorada. From here you can take the well marked trail that leads towards the crater and runs right inside. Then go around the crater to get back to the car park.

The route from El Golfo to Playa El Paso runs along the rugged coast on the edge of the Timanfaya lava field. You can park in El Golfo at the end of the village by the children’s playground. Be sure to stick to the path as the lava is jagged and there are deep lava bubbles that you could fall into. You can either return by the same route of follow the circular path inland until it skirts back to El Golfo.

Montaña Los Rodeos – This 4 hour walk takes you along a straight dirt track to this high volcanic cone. There’s a trail that runs around the peak and one that takes you up to the top for views over the surrounding area. There is a parking area on the LZ-56 just south of La Mancha.

Plan your trip to Lanzarote

For a comprehensive but compact guidebook covering all you need to know about Lanzarote, I recommend the Lanzarote Marco Polo pocket guide . This is the guidebook that I used while were were there. There’s lots of background information and insider tips on the best things to see. It includes a free touring app with maps to download and use offline.

For guided tours I can recommend two excellent tour companies in Lanzarote;

Wine Tours Lanzarote run regular wine and craft beer tours and are extremely knowledgeable about the food and wine of Lanzarote. We took their most enjoyable wine tour covering three different bodegas which includes pickup from your accommodation. They also have a wine shop for deliveries of Lanzarote wines in the UK and Ireland.

Eco-insider Lanzarote offer a wide range of small group tours with knowledgeable local guides. We took their 3 volcanos tour , but they also run walking tours, birdwatching tours and a full day wine tasting tour.

You can also find some excellent full day tours and boat trips around Lanzarote on Get Your Guide , our recommended tour partner.

Where to stay in Lanzarote

We stayed at two delightful places during our 10 day trip to Lanzarote

  • Finca de Arrieta with Lanzarote Retreats. This small eco-village on the northern coast at Arrieta has a number of different villas, stone lodges and yurts with a relaxed and friendly vibe. It’s ideal for independent travellers. You can read my review of Finca de Arrieta here , or for more places to stay check out these Lanzarote hotels .

Visiting the Timanfaya National Park

January 15, 2019

When travellers ask about what they will find in Lanzarote , we tell them that here they will enjoy otherworldly beauty .

Lanzarote’s landscapes are as imposing as they are unique. Part of this charm is due to the Parque Nacional de Timanfaya, which is the only national park in the Spanish network that is of an eminently geological nature, since it is the result of the volcanic eruptions that took place between 1720 and 1736, and in 1824.

The absence of vegetation, the extreme ruggedness of the terrain, the variety of colours, the silhouettes of the volcanoes and the jagged coastline – all these make Timanfaya extraordinarily beautiful.

Visiting the park. What to do there.

There are various options for discovering and enjoying this protected space, uncovering its surprises little by little. Different facilities and infrastructures are located around the LZ-67, the road that connects the towns of Tinajo and Yaiza, and these are detailed below:

Visitor Centre

lanzarote volcano trip

Before starting the visit, we advise you to check out the Visitor Centre located in Mancha Blanca, which gives free access to an exhibition and an audiovisual programme offering a complete overview of the Park in several languages.

The Centre is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has a shop/bookshop.

Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire)

lanzarote volcano trip

In the Montañas del Fuego, visitors can immerse themselves in the world of volcanoes. This area is accessed from Taro de Entrada (on the LZ-67) where the entrance fee is paid ( information on entrance fees ), the price of which includes parking, geothermal demonstrations and a tour of the Ruta de los Volcanes (Volcano Route) by guagua (bus) .

9.00 a.m. to 3.45 p.m.

recommended: 1.00 p.m.

Services and facilities:

  • El Diablo cafeteria-restaurant.
  • Tour by bus (included in the entrance price)

Camel Rides

lanzarote volcano trip

Continuing on the LZ-67 in the direction of Yaiza, you will find the Echadero de Camellos. This is a place where you can go for a ride on a camel. The Echadero has a Museum – Information Point that offers an exhibition on the National Park, the traditional uses of camels and farming tools. It is accessible for people with reduced mobility. It is open from Monday to Friday, from 9.00 a.m. to 3.00 p.m.

Ride on a camel. €12 per camel for 2 people.

Walking Routes

lanzarote volcano trip

You can also enjoy this unique landscape on foot from the following trails:

  • Tremensana Route. This is a guided walk that covers some 2 km, and must be reserved in advance at the Mancha Blanca Visitor Centre. +34 928849839
  • Coastal Route. This can either be a guided walk reserved in advance like the previous route, or can be covered independently. The path goes through public land parallel to the coast.

** We recommend you to confirm the opening hours of the Visitor Center and Fire Mountains on the date of your visit, on the official websites, since these may be affected depending on the restrictions of access or season.

Look out for:

Lichens. These are unique protagonists in the inhospitable volcanic surface where they survive under the battering of the Trade Winds.

Volcanic cones. The most iconic are: Montaña de Timanfaya, Montaña Rajada, Caldera del Corazoncillo, Volcán Nuevo del Fuego or El Chinero and the Calderas Quemadas.

Inside the boundaries of the Park is one of the stations of the Laboratorio Geodinámico de Lanzarote, Lanzarote’s Geodynamics Lab.

The tourist facilities designed by César Manrique are a delight to the eye of the visitor.

The vestiges of the past make themselves felt today through the temperatures that reach 100-120ºC in the ground.

Advice and Safety

Visiting the Park requires respect for the peace and tranquility and the conservation of the environment. For this reason it is important not to disturb the animals , and also pulling up, gathering or extracting plants and minerals is forbidden, as well as altering any other natural element.

We would be grateful if, as far as possible, you could return waste to the populated areas , thus limiting the use of bins, and never leave or throw waste outside the collection areas.

Likewise, you cannot drive vehicles outside the asphalted areas open to the public . It is not possible to walk over the lava or on other volcanic material.

We would be grateful if between us all we could contribute to preserving this unique environment.

10 Lanzarote Volcanoes For An Explosive Canary Island Trip

Find the ride you need in.

Before you plan your trip, learn about the top 10 beautiful Lanzarote volcanoes you must visit. This guide will get you going in the right direction.

Lanzarote Volcano near the shore

If you’re ready to swap the beach for something a little unorthodox, the Lanzarote volcanoes should be on your radar. Adventuring through volcanic scenery isn’t the typical summer vacation, but it’s one you’ve got to consider.

Imagine your camera roll filled with pics of majestic mountains, fiery landscapes, and unimaginable geysers. Your friends will be oh-so-jealous, and you’ll have an insane experience to look back on.

So, if you want to put on your explorer hat, Lanzarote is the island for you.

Let’s jump right into the action.

  • Is Lanzarote a volcanic island? A quick intro:

drone view of two volcano craters in Lanzarote

Also known as the “Island of 1000 Volcanoes,” Lanzarote is the place to be if you want to admire these geographical wonders. But don’t worry if you’re not an experienced hiker; the island is filled with spectacular hikes for all abilities.

With dramatic landscapes and a history of eruptions, this island is home to over 300 volcanoes. Don’t worry — only one is active. Its last eruption was in 1730, so it’s safe to visit. Phew.

You’ll find this show-stopping Canary Island off the west coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Though it’s geographically part of Africa, it’s still considered European territory and is part of Spain.

Fun fact:  Lanzarote is over 15 million years old.

Have we enticed you to book your flights? Scroll down to get an overview of the top volcanoes and why you need to see them.

  • Will the Lanzarote Volcanoes erupt again?

landscape of many volcanoes in Lanzarote

If you’re curious about Lanzarote, this question is probably on your lips. But don’t worry. Booking a trip to this destination won’t end up in flames. A volcano eruption in Lanzarote isn’t on the cards anytime soon.

Timanfaya is the only active volcano right now. But the last time it erupted was in 1730 for a whopping 2,055 days. The island’s experts constantly observe volcanic activity for risks, and professionals carefully examine any seismic activity.

Fun Fact:  The 1730 Timanfaya eruption is why the Tinguaton, Tao, and del Fuego volcanoes exist.

  • 10 best Lanzarote Volcanoes

path leading through two Lanzarote volcanoes

Throw out the guidebooks. This is what you really need to know about the Lanzarote mountains.

Timanfaya National Park

Best for seeing the most famous sights and the only Lanzarote active volcano.

Lanzarote's Volcanoes in Timanfaya National Park

When you search for this island, the  Timanfaya National Park  is one of the top attractions — and for a good reason. This park isn’t only photo-worthy, but it’s home to an active volcano. Oh yes.

Active doesn’t mean it’s likely to erupt, though. The volcanic activity occurs 13 meters below the ground, and the only visible examples are the impressive jets of steam from the geysers in the park.

So, what’s inside the park — aside from underground volcanic activity? You can see craters, volcanoes, geysers, lava tubes, and more here. It’s a feast for the eyes. Don’t miss it if you’re in town.

There are several ways to see the park, including:

  • 9 km (5.5 miles) coastal hiking trail (best for experienced hikers and takes approx three hours)
  • 4 km (2.4 miles) walking trail (great for families and beginners)
  • Guided bus tours
  • Camel-back guided tours

As the only active volcano Lanzarote has to offer, this park will be busy in the summer months. But don’t let this put you off. Since it’s such a large national park, you’ll have lots of space to admire the sights.

Don’t miss the El Diablo restaurant. An in-park eatery that uses a 400°C/752°F pool of lava to cook the food. Foodies will want to tick this off.

Fun Fact:  The national park takes up a whopping quarter of the island.

Corona Volcano

Best for anyone looking for a high-altitude day out.

Corona Volcano in Lanzarote

On the island’s northern side, you’ll find the aptly named Corona Volcano (because it’s like the island’s crown —  get it? )

To get here, you’ll need to visit Ye village, which is 605 meters (1984 ft) above sea level. From here, you can hike up the crater. It’s best to go with a guided tour if you want to hear more about the history from a local guide. If you plan to go alone, make sure you have a rough idea of the trail before you arrive.

The volcano is excellent for beginner hikers and lasts around one to two hours, depending on your speed and group. The trail distance is 3.4 km (2.1 miles), and the elevation gain is 145 m (475 feet).

On the hike, you can admire the volcano’s complex caves, rough black basalt, and the green grasslands at its base. A volcano trip to Lanzarote isn’t complete without the Corona Volcano.

Pro Tip:  Make sure you see the world’s largest underwater volcanic tube before you leave. You can access this tunnel from Cueva de los Verdes.

Montana Blanca

Best if you want to see something different.

the rock formations of Montana Blanca in Lanzarote

Unlike the many black basalt volcanoes on the island, the Montana Blanca Volcano in Lanzarote offers a different look. This impressive sight isn’t dark and mysterious. It’s pale white and the highest on the island. You won’t be able to look away.

To get to this majestic site, you’ll need to make your way to the municipality of San Bartolome. In this town, you’ll find a visitors center, car parking, and maps with clear route markings.

The most popular hike to Montana Blanca takes approximately two hours. It takes you across different landscapes and to a gorgeous viewpoint.

Lanzarote always looks better from a height.

You may also come across mountain goats but don’t worry. These guys are friendly.

For the most part, this path is wide and suitable for intermediate hikers.

Pro Tip:  Don’t confuse Montana Blanca with Caldera Blanca. 20 km/12 miles separate these two peaks.

Caldera Blanca

Best for keen hikers.

Volcano Caldera Blanca in Lanzarote

Not to be confused with Montana Blanca, Caldera Blanca is another well-known volcano on this beautiful island. Created from the 1730 eruptions, Caldera Blanca sits 500 meters (1,640 ft) tall with an impressive 1199 m (3,937 ft) wide crater.

The Caldera Blanca trail is extra special as it directly leads to the volcano’s crater. The elevation of this hike is approximately 450 m (1,500 ft), and the trail is around 10 km (6.2 miles), making it a moderate hike.

Not ideal if it’s your first hike, but it’s not extreme. Just make sure you have water because it gets hot in the summer.

You’ll need to head to Mancha Blanca to get to the grand crater. From here, you should drive towards the Timanfaya National Park. On the way, you’ll see signs for this volcano. Hint: They’re approximately two km (1.2 miles) from the visitor center.

Pro Tip:  Download the route via an offline map app before you go.

Cuervo Volcano

Best for family-friendly trips.

Cuervo Volcano vineyard in Lanzarote

Situated between La Geria and the Timanfaya National Park, the iconic Cuervo Volcano is the first volcano formed due to the 1730 eruption.

If you want to visit the volcanoes without embarking on a difficult journey, this could be the day trip for you. Cuervo is considered a family-friendly volcano, as the main hiking trail is a simple five km (three miles) — one of the easiest on the island.

But the relaxing hike isn’t the only appeal. After a five-minute drive from this peak, you’ll find a volcanic winery (Bodega La Geria). Yes, a winery amongst the dry volcanic ash. This award-winning winery uses the Malvasia grape variety, creating an aromatic white wine.

Volcan Bermeja

Best for jaw-dropping views.

Volcan Bermeja in Lanzarote

Volcan Bermeja is a must-see volcano on the east side of Lanzarote. Unlike the inland volcanoes, this beautiful red volcano is best viewed from the nearby beach — Playa Montana Bermeja. Here, you can gaze upon the red rock from a black sand beach framed by turquoise waters.

But don’t bring your beach towel. Playa Montana Bermeja isn’t a swimming beach. The current is too strong. Sorry, water babies! However, there are plenty of incredible swimming beaches on the island, so don’t fret.

The best way to see Volcan Bermeja? On a road trip. Hire a car and drive down the island’s east side to admire the scenery along this coastline.

Caldera Colorada

Best for photographers.

Caldera Colorada in Lanzarote

You may not return home with a Lanzarote volcano eruption photo. Still, you can snap some images of an intense red-colored volcano.

Caldera Colorada is located in the center of Lanzarote, within the Los Volcanes National Park. Unlike the other dark volcanoes, this caldera is red and brownish, making for outstanding images and unforgettable memories.

There’s also a hiking trail that takes you around the volcano. You can find the trailhead in Mancha Blanca town, and it’s a simple, family-friendly route. The 2.8 km (1.8 mile) trail is completely flat, which is ideal if you want to take it slow.

Montana Teneza

Best if you want to avoid the crowds.

shore view Montana Teneza in Lanzarote

Without a doubt, Timanfaya is the most popular Lanzarote volcano. It’s an impressive sight. But the crowds that come with it aren’t so fun.

If you want to beat the hordes, schedule a trip to Montana Teneza. This lesser-known volcano sits within the Los Volcanes National Park but doesn’t see as many visitors as its famous friend.

So, if you want to lace up your hiking boots and explore without other humans, head to this spot. The trail around the volcano passes natural pools, volcanic beaches, and even Ana Victoria cave. It’s a true hidden gem.

Montana Roja

Best for a beach day.

lanzarote volcano trip

Montana Roja is a must-see volcano in the south of the island. However, you don’t have to head to a sparse national park to view this beauty. It’s easily seen from the beach — hence why it’s also dubbed the “Playa Blanca Volcano.”

Still, you can hike if you want. The Montana Roja trail starts on the west side of Playa Blanca, and the route is well-marked by an  Al Volcan  (to the Volcano) sign. If you’re driving, you can park by Jardines Del Sol.

Pro Tip:  You can explore this volcano’s crater and even climb inside. Bring sturdy shoes!

Montana Rajada

Best if you’re interested in hiking the Tremesana Route.

pathway leading to a Lanzarote Volcano

Finally, we have Montana Rajada. This is a spectacular black and red volcano with a jagged silhouette. This volcano isn’t on every Lanzarote itinerary, but it should be.

It is, however, on the Tremesana Route. This famous hike takes you through the volcanoes that erupted between 1730-1736. The route is around three km (1.8 miles), and you can book guided tours in English and Spanish.

You can also take a volcano tour bus through this area if you don’t want to walk long distances.

  • Packing list essentials for the Lanzarote Volcanoes

If you’re visiting in the winter, you should take a light jacket for the evenings. But in the summer, don’t even think about it.

  • Weather in Lanzarote

landscape of Lanzarote

Before you adventure up a Lanzarote mountain, ensure you’re dressed for the part. The best way to gauge the weather is by looking at past averages, so use these statistics as an approximation.

With over 300 days of bright sunshine per year, Lanzarote is a warm paradise. Even in the winter months (December, January, and February), daily highs sit around 22°C/71°F and drop to 14°C/57°F at night.

In the hottest summer months (June, July, August, and September), temperatures average 29°C/84°F but can reach up to 40°C/104°F — wowza! Temperatures sit around 20°C/68°F in the summer evenings.

Lanzarote has low rainfall with 125 to 150 mm per year. The wettest month is December, when you can expect 35mm of rain.

  • Map of the Lanzarote Volcanoes

Ready to go volcano-hopping (who knew there was such a thing)? This map will help you plan your holiday so you spend less time getting there and more time snapping incredible pics from the craters!

  • How to get to the Lanzarote Volcanoes

Volcanoes in Lanzarote

You’ll probably arrive at Lanzarote Airport (ACE), the island’s main international airport. From here, you’ll likely travel to Costa Teguise or Arrecife — the island’s two most popular destinations. Each is packed with accommodation, amenities, and restaurants.

From  Lanzarote Airport to Costa Teguise , you must travel 12 km (8 miles), which takes approximately 40 minutes by car. The most popular route is a  bus transfer from TL Travel.

If you want to go from  Lanzarote Airport to Arrecife , you’ll only have to travel five km (3.1 miles). This journey takes approximately 25 minutes via bus transfer. Quick and easy!

  • Final thoughts on visiting the Lanzarote Volcanos

Whether you’re an avid trekker or keen to see nature’s most remarkable sights, the Lanzarote volcanoes will ignite your spirit. Make sure you investigate all of the options before you go. A tailor-made volcano itinerary is a must on this Canary Island.

We’ll see you at the trailhead.

Yes, the Lanzarote volcano Timanfaya is technically active. But it hasn’t erupted since 1730. Volcanic experts constantly measure seismic activity; if the risk is observed, there’s a safety plan.

The last Lanzarote eruption was in 1824 and lasted around three months. This eruption was smaller than the 1730 one, mainly from the Nuevo del Fuego vent. As far as active volcanoes in Lanzarote go, Timanfaya is the only one today.

There are over 300 volcanoes in Lanzarote, but only Timanfaya is currently active. So, don’t expect a Lanzarote volcano eruption today.

4 perfect days in Lanzarote

Sarah Lee

The Spanish island of Lanzarote is part of the Canary Islands, so you would think it’s got a similar vibe to its sister islands Tenerife and Gran Canaria. But Lanzarote has a different feel altogether. The landscape was forged by volcanoes (one is still active today), so its center has bubbling geysers and huge craters, while other parts are made up of long powdery beaches, valley vineyards, and charming villages with buildings built out of towering rock formations.

You could easily spend an entire week here, but four days is enough to soak it all in. This itinerary delivers the highlights and a few lesser-known gems, with ratings and reviews from Tripadvisor users who've been to the island and loved it.

Tourist hiking in Timanfaya National Park, Lanzarote, Spain

Morning: Head to the island’s fiery heart

Get an early start to have Lanzarote’s most dramatic location mostly to yourself. Timanfaya is the fiery heart of the island, one of more than 300 volcanoes that have carved it out. The black pellets that cover the ground all over the island are bits of volcanic rock that were spewed from Timanfaya and other volcanoes over millennia.

At Timanfaya National Park you can get to the source of the island’s geology, hiking along trails or joining tours to see twisted lava formations and towering craters. You can explore part of the park without paying an entrance fee, but to fully immerse yourself in its giant red peaks, I recommend you take a 25-minute bus tour along the “Ruta de los Volcanoes,” departing from El Diablo Restaurant. You’ll see volcanic craters, lava fields, bubbling geysers, unique rock formations, and the Montañas del Fuego (Mountains of Fire), a group of dormant volcanoes loved by hikers and photographers.

Travelers say: “The scenery is impressive if you are interested in geology or volcanoes. Where else can you drive through a volcanic park where the ground in places is too hot to walk on? You cannot go to Lanzarote and not visit this amazing place.” —@ SussexChris

TIMANFAYA NATIONAL PARK TOUR OPTIONS

  • The Cycle Among Volcanoes Tour lets you take in the beauty of the volcanic landscapes and spectacular sunsets along less traveled paths through Timanfaya National Park.
  • Take an easy hike with a local guide to discover Timanfaya’s eruptions on a Volcano Trekking Tour . You’ll follow less-traveled trails and take photo stops in lava fields and craters.
  • On this Lanzarote Grand Tour , you’ll spend a day discovering the island’s volcanic heart by taking in Timanfaya National Park, Los Hervideros, Charco de los Clicos, and more.

Afternoon: Take in otherworldly landscapes

After the tour of Timanfaya National Park, head back to El Diablo Restaurant for a unique experience: lunch cooked with the geothermal heat from the volcano. Designed by famed Lanzorate sculptor and architect César Manrique (more on him in a bit), El Diablo has a cylindrical shape with a tree sprouting through the middle. Believe me, it’s worth grabbing a table by the enormous windows that give you a front row seat for nature’s spectacle.

After lunch, drive for 15 minutes towards the island’s southeast coast and you’ll arrive at the fishing village of El Golfo, where you’ll find one of Lanzarote’s most surprising volcanic views. Charco de los Clicos is a volcanic depression with a joyously bright green lagoon, separated from the sea by a border of charcoal sand. The russet red and gold hues of the cliffs create a dramatic backdrop.

The lagoon is so green that to me it almost looks like something out of a cartoon, like the ooze escaping from the nuclear plant in an episode of The Simpsons. But it gets its brilliantine green from very high concentrations of phytoplankton, a type of marine algae.

You can take in the views from above on walking trails along the cliffs. You can’t swim here, obviously—the strong smell of sulfur is enough to keep you away—but you can take a dip at nearby El Golfo Beach. Just remember that the sea can get rough.

Next, take a short drive south along the coast to reach Los Hervideros , near the town of Yaiza. Created where molten lava met the chill of the water, the result is spectacular. The sea below the cliffs bubbles like a giant cauldron. Further along the path the water froths into caves, then fizzes skywards. Every turn offers up a location for another Instagram post.

Once you’ve taken in these cliffs, drive 30 minutes south to Salinas de Janubio . These dramatic salt flats have been producing “white gold” for centuries. The salt is used to preserve fish and create dyes. This is my favorite spot in the late afternoon because the sun is dazzling as it reflects off the salt crystals.

Travelers say: “Great to see the power of Mother Nature and, if you can, see wonderful sunsets.” —@ Kennedys1

Evening: Dining and shopping in the marina

Lanzarote has a number of marinas, and one of my favorites is Marina Rubicon , near Playa Blanca. It’s a great place to shop and dine. Family-owned Arabella’s at the Marina is a popular spot to eat because it overlooks the boats bobbing in the marina. I like the laid-back vibe, and so do the Tripadvisor readers who give it high marks. There’s a wide range of meaty dishes (try the burger with halloumi cheese), as well as many items for vegans and vegetarians. The creative cocktails are served with a flourish.

Worthy detours along the way

lanzarote volcano trip

Morning: Discover the nature of Lanzarote’s art

Few artists have had as much impact on their native land as César Manrique. He was an artist and sculptor, and passionate about the natural wonders of Lanzarote. There are lots of examples of his work around the island, but the most important ones are all close together. Today’s itinerary includes a lot of walking on lava, so be sure to wear comfortable shoes.

Start with a visit to his home of 20 years, now a museum called the Fundación César Manrique . Built in the countryside near the village of Tahiche, it’s formed from volcanic tubes created by an 18th-century lava flow. The place has a feel of a futuristic bubble house, or perhaps even the lair of a villain from a James Bond movie. In the lovely garden you’ll find plenty of examples of his works.

Travelers say : “Everyone told us to start here on our trip to Lanzarote, and I can easily see why. This isn’t just about visiting a tourist site. This is about learning about the man behind so much on the island. Yes, the house is fascinating, with rooms carved out of volcanic rock. But here you can learn as well as see. Beautiful. Fascinating. And a terrific starting point to so many other tourist sights on the island.” —@ Jean_H

Head about 12 minutes north to the Jardin de Cactus, near Guatiza. In the last of his projects on the island, he transformed an abandoned quarry into a botanical garden with 4,500 cacti—around 500 species—from all corners of the world. You’ll also find other artworks by Manrique, including a mural in the on-site restaurant.

Finally, head to the 19th-century mill that sits at the top of the garden. You’ll learn how farmers once produced the most Canarian of grains—gofio—on this spot. It’s still used in many dishes served in the island’s restaurants, such as the cheesy spread called almogrote .

Afternoon: Immerse yourself in culture

Speaking of food, you’ll no doubt be ready for lunch. If you love tapas, I recommend Cantina de Mala in the nearby town of Mala. It has a great selection of dishes, but you can’t go wrong with the all-you-can-eat spare ribs. If you want views of the coast and a variety of fresh seafood dishes, head for Restaurante Amanecer in the village of Arrieta. Tripadvisor readers give it high marks.

From here it’s a short drive to the next stop on your Manrique tour. In the 1960s, Manrique turned three jameos , or caves, into a masterpiece called the Jameos del Agua . Here you’ll find a concert hall holding 500 people, a museum, lush gardens, and a swimming pool. For me, Jameos del Agua is the epitome of Manrique’s efforts to combine culture with nature.

One more thing: don’t miss the small salt lake where tiny albino blind crabs saunter in the clear water. It’s one of the things that delights me about the island.

Evening: Soak up the sky-high views

Just 15 minutes from here, you’ll find yourself in Lanzarote’s northern reaches where shrunken shrubs and lichen hug the rocks. There’s a wildness about the landscape here, a welcome change of pace to the southern beach resorts. It’s the perfect setting for a final Manrique piece.

You won’t immediately see the Mirador del Rio scenic overlook because it’s perfectly camouflaged by the surrounding rock. It was a great vantage point for spotting pirates and other invaders centuries ago. Today it’s an ideal location for seeing the neighboring island of La Graciosa and the islets of Alegranza and Roque del Oeste.

Inside, the space has two giant windows—I think they resemble an enormous pair of eyes—that look out onto the Strait of El Rio. You can also wander outside to a platform and a pathway along the cliffs to enjoy a more up-close perspective. As the sun sets, watch as the sky turns from blue to buttery yellow, amber, and pink. It’s a great way to end the day.

For dinner, visit the nearby coastal village of Orzola for a wonderful choice of seafood dishes at Restaurante Mirador El Roque . My favorite is the arroz negro —rice blackened with squid ink and cooked with a mix of shellfish. Tripadvisor readers also rank this place high on the list of best restaurants on the island.

NORTHERN LANZAROTE TOUR OPTIONS

  • Explore the most popular attractions on the northern half of the island with the César Manrique Guided Tour , which takes you to all of the artist’s best works, including the Jardin de Cactus, Mirador del Rio, and more.
  • On this very popular Guided Tour of Northern Lanzarote , you’ll head out in a dune buggy to take in the region’s mountainous landscape.

Morning: Wander the winding streets of Teguise

Don’t confuse Teguise with the resort called Costa Teguise . It’s Teguise, perhaps the prettiest town in the heart of Lanzarote, that I’m steering you to today. One of the island’s first settlements, Teguise is home to a lovely 18th-century mansion called the Spinola Palace . Inside you’ll find the Casa del Timple , a museum telling the story of the diminutive five-stringed guitar that’s hailed as the sound of Canarian music.

Beyond its museums, the perfect way to learn about Teguise’s history is to wander its winding streets and admire its traditional white-washed houses with wooden shutters. If you visit on a Sunday, get there early for the popular Teguise Market . You’ll find plenty of handicrafts and ceramics to take home as souvenirs.

Afternoon: Sea it all at Puerto Calero

After a morning strolling around Teguise, drive south to Puerto Calero for an adventure. From the marina, hop aboard a banana-yellow submarine for a deep dive into the underwater world surrounding Lanzarote. You’ll spot eels, barracuda, and rays along the way.

For lunch head to the elegant Pelicano Restaurante , where modern Mediterranean food and local wines are the order of the day. The tender calamari is a favorite of Tripadvisor readers, who give the place high marks.

The Puerto Calero area has an abundance of great beaches, such as Playa del Jablillo and Playa Grande . But a short drive south is what I think is the best of the bunch: Playa Papagayo . It’s one of the most spectacular spots on the island, and well worth a stop to feel the sand between your toes.

Travelers say : “Papagayo Beach is wonderful, clean and the sea is mostly calm compared to some other places on the island. The road to get there is a bit bumpy but it's definitely worthwhile. We loved it!” —@ Ivan Kovac

Evening: Make it a starry night

Head off the beaten track to the hills north of Teguise, where I’d recommend Restaurante Mirador de los Valles , famed for its hearty country dishes including goat stew, views over the island’s interior, and great service.

After dark, head to Peñas del Chache , where you’ll be rewarded with a star-filled sky. The highest point on the island, it’s well away from the bright lights of the larger towns and the coastal resorts, so you’ll be treated to views of the Milky Way. I love the clear views of the constellation of Sagittarius and especially the long-tailed Scorpio.

PUERTO CALERO AREA TOUR OPTIONS

  • Explore the underwater world around Lanzarote without getting wet on a Submarine Safari descending deep into the ocean. The eye-catching 44-seat sub departs from the Puerto Calero Marina.
  • You and a group of your friends can spend the early evening enjoying a Dolphin Sunset Tour . You’ll be riding on an electric catamaran, so you’re keeping the waters off Lanzarote pollution-free.

Morning: Spend a few hours in the capital city

In the capital city of Arrecife, I recommend you head first to the Museo Internacional de Arte Contemporáneo Castillo de San José , in the Puerto Nao area. The Castle of San José stood abandoned for the best part of 100 years until César Manrique—the same guy who built all those amazing structures across the island—encouraged the government to open it as an art gallery in 1976. The curves of the metal sculptures intertwine beautifully with the heavy stone of the 17th century fortress.

A quirky but fun look at an era when air travel was the height of sophistication, the Museo Aeronáutico del Aeropuerto de Lanzarote occupies the island’s first passenger terminal. The building from 1946 has barely changed over the years, making it fascinating to explore.

Continue to Castillo de San Gabriel , Lanzarote’s oldest fortress. A tour of the castle reveals a collection of more than 3,000 items—idols, jewelry, and primitive tools—belonging to the Los Majos people, the ancient Aborigines of Lanzarote. It’s the best place on the island to uncover their history.

Afternoon: Harbor views and wonderful wine

If all that history has made you hungry, try updated Canarian cuisine at the award-winning Restaurante Lilium . On Arrecife Harbor, it has great views of the boats anchored nearby. The team in the open kitchen serves updated versions of traditional staples like rabbit or suckling pig. If you have a more casual meal in mind, Malecón Restaurante y Copas , at Charco San Ginés, comes highly recommended for dishes like seafood paella.

With a dry climate and soil covered with pellets of lava, it’s difficult to understand how Lanzarote can produce wine at all, let alone wine that’s won international awards. Once you head to La Geria , it all becomes clear. Semicircular pits protect the vines that produce Lanzarote’s white and sweet wines.

There are a number of wineries along the LZ-30 road running through this rich valley, the oldest being Bodega El Grifo . It’s been growing vines in this way since 1775. Make sure you also visit some up-and-coming producers such as Vega de Yuco , which makes a subtle variety called Malvasia, and Stratvs , which makes a lovely Rosado.

Evening: Dusky dinner in the vineyards

As dusk falls, you’ll be surrounded by the stillness of this vast landscape. Have an early dinner at one of the vineyards’ restaurants (Stratvs’ is open the latest, until 8pm).

End your island visit by taking in the fun and lively atmosphere of Puerto del Carmen ’s seaside strip. This is Lanzarote’s most touristy area, but there are a few great bars here such as La Delicatezza , which serves up a selection of show-stopping cocktails, delivered in dramatic style.

Travelers say : “We learned a lot about the history of vineyards in the island (only since the 18th century). Really amazing and very curious. The place has amazing views of vineyards and some volcanos.” —@ AlbertSalichs

LA GERIA AREA TOUR OPTIONS

  • Specializing in small groups, Wine Tours Lanzarote has expert guides that fill you in on the fascinating history of wineries on Lanzarote.
  • See ancient presses, pumps, and crushers with a self-guided tour of the El Grifo Museum of Wine . Along the way you’ll learn how wine is produced in this mostly barren region.
  • Trek across the black landscape of La Geria on a La Geria Vineyards Hiking Tour .

Know before you go

Lanzarote is beautiful year-round. July and August see the most visitors, and prices for hotels can creep up. May has lovely weather but is a much quieter time to visit, while September and October are still very warm, without the searing summer heat. December to April have more rain, although the island doesn’t really have a rainy season.

The best times to visit the island are weekdays, when crowds are smaller and prices tend to be lower. But you’ll find plenty of activities to choose from throughout the week.

Most shops and businesses are open Monday to Saturday from 9:30 to 1:30 and 5 to 7. Many restaurants are open all day, but some only open for dinner service at about 6pm.

Most travelers tend to stay at several popular resorts on golden-sand beaches. But there are also some lovely boutique hotels in other parts of the island, such as the town of Teguise, where you can avoid the crowds.

Puerto Del Carmen : Next to the beach, the Barcarola Club is all about relaxation. It’s a private paradise with tranquil tropical gardens, a pool, and a spa. The rooms with private terraces and views of the sea get high marks from Tripadvisor readers. Alternatively, try Hyde Park Lane , a cluster of two-bedroom villas in a very quiet part of Los Pocillos Beach. Each villa has its own heated pool, a spacious terrace, and an outdoor dining area.

Playa Blanca : Near the yachting port of Marina Rubicón, the gleaming white Hotel LIVVO Volcán Lanzarote has a prime location facing the sea. This is a spectacular hotel, designed like a typical local village. A little less over the top, Dreams Lanzarote Playa Dorada Resort & Spa is a peaceful retreat with fabulous views of the ocean, great dining options, a soothing spa, and a fully equipped gym.

Costa Teguise : Here’s your chance to stay in a building designed, in part, by the great César Manrique. The adults-only Paradisus by Meliá Salinas has great architecture designed to let the outdoors in. Light floods all the common areas. The minimalist rooms are done up with organic materials and lots of neutral colors.

By bike : If you prefer to feel the wind in your hair, biking is a great way to see Lanzarote. You can hire everything from road bikes to mountain bikes. Check out Lanzarote Bike at Hotel Costa Calero in Puerto Calero.

By car : Rental cars are a great way to see the island on your own schedule. You can rent cars from both terminals of Lanzarote Airport, the port areas in Arrecife and Muelle Playa Blanca, and in Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise, Playa Blanca, and Puerto Calero.

Airport transfers : If you don’t plan on renting a car while you are in Lanzarote, take a taxi to your hotel. You can also arrange for a car and driver to be waiting for you with LanzaLux .
