London travel news LIVE: Lorry overturned on M1 amid Tube delays

live travel updates tfl

A lorry has overturned on the M1 southbound, at J13 A421 (Bedford / Milton Keynes South).

One lane is closed with traffic monitoring site Inrix classing the crash as “high impact” but reporting that traffic is “coping well”.

It comes after the Bakerloo line was disrupted for most of Monday morning.

Although the Bakerloo line has since cleared up, several other lines are facing delays.

Live coverage ends

Were now ending our live coverage of today’s travel news. Thank you for joining us.

We will be back again tomorrow with the latest transport developments.

Piccadilly service resumes with severe delays

An earlier suspension on the Piccadilly Line has now been resolved, but the line is now running with severe delays.

The FTSE-100 ends the day at a record closing high of 8,023.87, up 128 points or 1.62%. Beats the old record of 8014.

District and Piccadilly part-suspended while Overground also disrupted

The District and Piccadilly Lines are both part-suspended between Turnham Green and Ealing Broadway.

This is because of a fire alert at Ealing Common, says TfL.

Meanwhile, on the Overground, there is service between Gospel Oak and Upper Holloway because of a points failure.

Piccadilly delays

There are minor delays between Acton Town and Uxbridge on the Piccadilly Line due to train cancellations, TfL says.

There is a good service on the rest of the line.

Metropolitan line no longer delayed

The Metropolitan line has returned to running a good service.

One lane opens on M1

Emergency services have been able to open one lane on the M1, where a lory overturned earlier this morning.

The lorry has been recovered but one lane is still closed on the entry ramp, with traffic still slow on the main carriageway approaching the exit slip, as traffic from the roundabout backs up.

Disruption between Epsom and Sutton expected until 3pm

We told you earlier about disruption to trains serving London Bridge and London Victoria - this is now expected to last until 3pm at least.

All Southern lines have been disrupted because of a points failure between Sutton and Epsom.

Trains running between these stations may be cancelled, delayed by up to 20 minutes or revised.

The following routes are affected:

  • Between London Bridge and Epsom
  • Between London Victoria and Dorking / Horsham

Minor delays to Metropolitan line

There are currently minor delays between Harrow-on-the-Hill and Uxbridge due to signal failure at Rayners Lane.

Jubilee line no longer delayed

The Jubilee line has returned to running a good service.

Great app, really helpful 🇬🇧❤️

Final station to know direction missing

Why don‘t you mention which direction (end station) the train goes? Need to check separately on the map or in the tube again. Otherwise all works great.

TfL puts live travel updates on your smartphone homescreen

Xtfl puts live travel updates on your smartphone homescreen.

Transport for London (TfL) has updated its existing travel app to let people put live travel disruptions for tube lines onto their smartphone’s home screen.

The widgets, which can be added to the home screen of any iPhone or Android device, allow the user to either set a line that they wish to have live travel information about or see the service status on all Tube and TfL’s rail services.

To use the new feature, once you have the app on your phone, click and hold the app icon, and a widget menu will appear. Select the widget you want, and then it lets you select a prefered line to show disruptions on and add that to your phone screen.

Once installed, you can see live information for that line, and if you tap on the widget, it’ll expand to show all lines.

live travel updates tfl

It may be a restriction of your correspondent’s phone, but the widget cannot be resized, which makes it hard to put onto the front page of most smartphones, but it can go onto a secondary screen. It’s an interesting idea, although maybe a future upgrade will include personalised journeys so people can see at a glance if their personal work commute — across parts of multiple lines — is affected.

The free TfL Go app has been downloaded more than a million times since it launched in 2020, was developed in-house by TfL and provides real-time information for buses, trams, Tube and TfL rail services, as well as offering walking and cycling options across London.

Ben Gammon, Head of Digital at TfL, said: “This latest update to our TfL Go app will further help customers know if there are any delays on Tube or TfL’s rail services across London and therefore whether to amend or retime their journey. By providing up-to-date information on journeys, as well as detailed accessibility information, we can help make it easier for customers to move around the city as more people return to public transport.”

The addition of widgets is the latest update to the app.

Last June, TfL added real-time information on how busy London Underground stations were at any particular point of the day, using aggregated and depersonalised data from TfL’s WiFi network. Historically, TfL has used ticketing data to understand travel patterns on the network, with quiet times data in TfL Go based largely on data from TfL’s Oyster and contactless ticketing system which records entry and exits at stations. This update allowed TfL to factor in how busy platforms and interchange points are to overall crowding within a station, which is displayed both when users click on a specific station, or shown when planning a journey.

TfL released the TfL Go app on iOS in August 2020 and on Android in December 2020.

This website has been running now for over a decade, and while advertising revenue contributes to funding the website, it doesn't cover the costs. That is why I have set up a facility with DonorBox where you can contribute to the costs of the website and time invested in writing and research for the news articles.

It's very similar to the way The Guardian and many smaller websites are now seeking to generate an income in the face of rising costs and declining advertising.

Whether it's a one-off donation or a regular giver, every additional support goes a long way to covering the running costs of this website, and keeping you regularly topped up doses of Londony news and facts.

If you like what you read on here, then please support the website here .

I set the widget on my iPhone 13 a couple of days ago. It’s gone from my phone and I can’t choose it from the widget list now.

Would prefer if they had a widget for checking when the next bus is at a set stop – I feel as if checking bus times is the most common use of the app

Pleased to see the iOS widget looks a lot more on brand than the screenshot from android – and takes up the space of about 4 icons so 1/6th of the available screen space.

Citimapper app has had a basic line alerting/notification feature for years now.

I have an older phone with limited app space so have to choose between London transport apps. As I also have a citimapper card the choice is premade.

I’d be happier if TfL sorted their notification of planned engineering works, like the last two weekends’ shuttle service between Edgware/Euston and Charing Cross/High Barnet, which isn’t mentioned anywhere (all publicity implies through trains between the closed branch sections), though I would be interested to see if the app gets better notice of signal failure fixes than drivers do (or care to tell people) to save long-winded detours.

The “Tube Map” app has a line status widget half the size of the TFL widget.

MONROE COUNTY, MI -- A pair of siblings died Saturday afternoon when a vehicle struck a Monroe County building where a children’s birthday party was taking place.

An 8-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy were pronounced dead on scene after a woman drove a vehicle into a Monroe County boat club around 3 p.m. on Saturday, April 20, said county Sheriff Troy Goodnough in an evening press conference.

Fifteen other people were injured in the incident, Goodnough said.

Three children and six adults were taken by medical helicopter or ambulance with “serious, life-threatening injuries,” Goodnough said. Six others were taken to the hospital by private vehicles.

It is unclear how many people were inside the building at the time, police said.

“The scene was described by the first responders as extremely chaotic, with high level of emotions of those directly involved and those who witnessed this horrific incident,” Goodnough said.

Police were called to the Swan Creek Boat Club, 6332 Brancheau St. in Berlin Township, after an unnamed 66-year-old woman crashed a vehicle into the building, sending it roughly 25 feet inside the building.

The woman was arrested for operating a vehicle while intoxicated and is currently being held in the Monroe County Jail. A restaurant that police suspect the woman visited earlier that day is temporarily closed while police investigate, Goodnough said.

The woman will likely face criminal charges, he added.

A representative of the Swan Creek Boat Club declined to comment to the media. The social club did say on its Facebook page that it will be closed Sunday, and posted a message about the incident: “There was a terrible accident at Swan today with many injuries, and much damage to the pavilion. Please keep all the people and families in attendance in your prayers.”

Limited access channel to move cargo traffic at Port of Baltimore to be ready by end of April

By Adam Thompson

Updated on: April 22, 2024 / 1:06 PM EDT / CBS Baltimore

BALTIMORE -- A limited access channel to get cargo traffic back in motion at the Port of Baltimore should be complete by the end of April, according to the White House.

A temporary channel northeast of the main shipping lanes opened Friday night but that will only restore about 15% of the pre-collapse commercial activity to the port.

Senior officials from the White House, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard, Department of Transportation and Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Civil Works met with Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Maryland Secretary of Transportation Paul Wiedefeld to discuss progress and continued collaboration in response to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore.

"Participants emphasized the need for a smooth return of cargo traffic to the port as the channel is reopened and went over the standard operating procedures for reopening maritime traffic after incidents," the White House said in a statement.

The leaders planned efforts to support impacted workers, including the launch of the Port of Baltimore Worker Retention Program and the PORT Act, the White House said.

Also discussed were efforts at the state and federal level to ensure a rapid rebuild of the bridge, and support for the families of workers who died from the bridge collapse.

"The White House will continue to work in lockstep with state and federal partners to minimize the impacts of the devastating collapse and to support affected communities," the White House said.

'Port is more than just history'

Gov. Moore and other leaders stood their ground that the bridge will be rebuilt, calling it a necessity.

"For Baltimore and our region, the port is more than just history. It is a major economic bet that we're leaning into for our future and we need to rebuild the Key Bridge to deliver the economic development opportunity for America," Mark Anthony Thomas, CEO of the Greater Baltimore Committee, said.

Stuck in the Port of Baltimore

Gov. Moore said they've been in consistent communication with the crews on the Dali and other cargo ships still stuck in the Port of Baltimore, adding they're in good health and condition.

How much has been removed?

Over 1,300 tons of steel of what was once the Key Bridge have been removed from the Patapsco River.

Also, 120 containers have been taken off of the cargo ship Dali. The goal's been to get 140 removed, which is critical to start the process of getting it out of the river.

Adam Thompson was raised in Ohio, but made stops in Virginia and North Carolina before landing in Maryland.

Coordinated pro-Palestinian protests snarl traffic across US cities

Editor's Note: This page is a summary of news on the Iran attack and the Israel-Hamas war for Monday, April 15. For the latest news, view our story for Tuesday, April 16.

Pro-Palestinian demonstrators demanding a cease-fire in Gaza blocked bridge traffic in San Francisco and New York and prompted some air travelers in Chicago to ditch their rides and reach the airport on foot as coordinated protests caused disruptions across several cities in the U.S. and internationally Monday

The organizing A15 Action group said on its website that the "the global economy is complicit in genocide and together we will coordinate to disrupt and blockade economic logistical hubs and the flow of capital.''

That meant shutting down the Golden Gate Bridge during the morning commute, snarling traffic into and out of San Francisco for hours. A group carrying a banner that read “Stop the world for Gaza” was eventually cleared off. Across the bay in Oakland, protesters forced the closure of two sections of Interstate 880, using weighted barrels to block the road.

In New York, hundreds of demonstrators halted afternoon traffic by clogging the Brooklyn Bridge, bringing on a large police response. And in Chicago, the highway that goes into O'Hare Airport was jammed by a protest, leading several passengers to walk to the terminal with their luggage.

“I support the idea that people should express their First Amendment rights and protest if they would like to,” Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker said in a statement. “I do not think that they should be disruptive of the traffic of people trying to get from one place to another.''

Road blockages from protests were also reported in Philadelphia, San Antonio, Texas, and Eugene, Oregon − where 52 demonstrators were arrested − in addition to Ottawa, Canada.

New allies: Israel's critics became allies over Iran attack. But they're still pushing a Gaza cease-fire

Developments:

∎ Oil prices fell Monday, and analysts credited the limited damage from Iran's strike.

∎ Humanitarian aid getting into the Gaza Strip has increased by a large amount in the last few days, White House national security spokesman John Kirby said Monday.

∎ The U.S. Central Command said Monday that its forces destroyed four unmanned aerial vehicles in Houthi-controlled areas of Yemen as an act of self-defense. Since the Israel-Hamas war,  Iran-linked Houthi rebels  have conducted dozens of missile and drone attacks on ships traveling in the Red Sea commercial waterway, a key trade route.

∎ British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Monday that the G7 industrialized nations are working on a package of coordinated measures against Iran. “I spoke to my fellow G7 leaders,'' he said. "We are united in our condemnation of this attack.”

What's next? Israel's long-simmering conflict with Iran moves out of the shadows

Israel weighs Iran response amid global concerns

Israel's War Cabinet met Monday as the nation weighs a response to Iran's missile and drone blitz amid global concerns that the Middle East could be careening toward a wider war.

Cabinet members huddled Sunday and were united in backing some form of retaliation for the Saturday strike − the first time Iran targeted Israel directly from its own territory − but were divided on the timing and scale of the next steps.

No decision has been announced, but speaking at the Nevatim air force base in southern Israel, military Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi said Monday: “This launch of so many missiles, cruise missiles, and UAVs (drones) into the territory of the state of Israeli territory will be met with a response.”

All eyes were on Israel as world leaders urged restraint. "We’re on the edge of the cliff and we have to move away from it," EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said. "We have to step on the brakes and reverse gear.”

President Joe Biden has told Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu  that the U.S. will defend its longtime ally but would not be part of any response to Saturday's attack.

Iran launched the assault over a suspected Israeli airstrike on its embassy compound in Syria on April 1 that killed seven Iranian military officers.  A U.S.-led coalition of warplanes and naval assets  helped intercept the more than 300 missiles and drones fired Saturday, and damage was limited in Israel.

Biden says US 'committed to Israel's security'

Biden said Monday that the U.S. is “committed to Israel’s security” following Iran’s attack on Israel over the weekend, as he reaffirmed his support for a hostage deal between Israel and Hamas.

“We're committed to a cease-fire that will bring the hostages home and prevent the conflict from spreading beyond where it already has,” Biden said.

Biden made the comments ahead of a bilateral meeting at the White House with Iraq Prime Minister Mohammed Shyaa Al-Sudani. "We're also committed to the security of our personnel and partners in the region, including Iraq," Biden said.

“Together with our partners, we defeated that attack,” Biden said of the 300 missiles and drones targeting Israel that a  U.S.-led coalition of warplanes and naval assets  helped intercept.

At the start of his meeting with Biden, Sudani joined the chorus of international voices urging restraint from Israel. “We encourage all the efforts of stopping the expansion of the area of conflict, especially the latest development,” Sudani said.

Thwarted attack not foretold but an 'embarrassing failure' for Iran

At a White House news conference Monday, Kirby pushed back on reports the Iranian attacks were meant to fail and that Iran warned about them ahead of time so they would be thwarted. Kirby called the claims "categorically false'' and "malarkey,'' underscoring that Israeli defenses along with U.S. help fended off the assault.

"It was an embarrassing failure'' for Iran, Kirby said.

At the same time, he urged the House of Representatives to "urgently" vote on a bipartisan national security bill that has already passed the Senate, which also includes funding for Ukraine. Speaker Mike Johnson said Monday the House will consider the aid packages separately this week.

Despite the U.S. intervention against the Iranian attack Saturday, Kirby said a response to it is "an Israeli decision to make,'' Kirby said. "We're going to leave it squarely with them. We're not involved in their decision-making process about a potential response.''

When will Israel respond to Iran's attack?

Two top Israeli officials have stressed that while retaliation may not be imminent, a response would be carefully orchestrated − and Iran would face the consequences.

“We will build a regional coalition and exact the price from Iran in the fashion and timing that is right for us,” Minister Benny Gantz said.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said Israel would look to create a strategic alliance “against this grave threat by Iran.”

World leaders urge Israel to use restraint

Israel's allies in Europe pressed the nation Monday to move cautiously.

French President Emmanuel Macron urged Israel to make isolating Iran the goal. "We will do all we can to avoid things flaring up," he said.

"Israel has won defensively thanks to its strong air defense and the efforts of the U.S., Britain and Arabic states,” German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said. “Now we must prevent an escalation in the region.”

Russia, which has refrained from criticizing its ally Iran, weighed in as well. “We are extremely concerned about the escalation of tensions in the region,” spokesman Dmitry Peskov said. “We call on all countries in the region to exercise restraint.”

Why did Iran strike Israel?

Iran's missile and drone barrage was retaliation for Israel's suspected strike on Iran's embassy in Damascus, which killed seven Iranian Revolutionary Guard officers, including two top commanders, on April 1.

But the strike followed months of clashes between Israel and Iran’s regional allies and was triggered by the war in Gaza, which has spread to fronts with Iran-aligned groups in Lebanon, Syria, Yemen and Iraq.

The Israel-Hamas war began Oct. 7, when Hamas militants brutally attacked Israeli border communities, killing 1,200 people and taking 253 hostages. A subsequent bombardment of Gaza by Israel has left over 33,000 Palestinians dead and triggered a humanitarian crisis in the gutted enclave.

Strike may have delayed Rafah invasion

Israel's long-anticipated ground invasion of Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip may be on hold because of the Iran strike, CNN and Israeli media reported. Netanyahu said last week that he had set a date for the invasion , which Israel sees as key to crushing Hamas, but he did not disclose the timing or details.

"This victory requires entry into Rafah and the elimination of the terrorist battalions there. It will happen − there is a date," Netanyahu said. Israel has been bombing Rafah for weeks, but Biden and other world leaders have urged Israel not to invade the city, fearing massive civilian death tolls because almost 1.4 million Palestinians are sheltering there.

Mount Ruang Erupts in Indonesia, Spewing Lava Thousands of Feet Into the Sky

Hundreds of earthquakes were detected in the weeks preceding the eruption of the volcano in North Sulawesi province. Hundreds of people were evacuated.

Mount Ruang, a volcano in Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday, spewing fiery lava and ash thousands of feet into the night sky and forcing the evacuation of hundreds of people in the North Sulawesi province, according to the authorities and local news reports.

The volcano erupted at about 7:19 p.m. local time, Antara, the national news agency, reported. The country’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency said on Wednesday that more than 800 people in nearby villages were displaced by the eruption, many using ferries and taking shelter in churches and community centers.

A large cloud of ashes rises from a volcano into the clouds, illuminated by the orange flames from the lava. The light is reflected on the waters.

The authorities said supplies such as mats, blankets, cleaning materials, and tents were needed, and that more shelters might be opening for people fleeing the volcano.

Indonesia is the world’s largest archipelago nation. It is spread across what is known as the Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates clash under the surface of the Pacific Ocean and spawn earthquakes and eruptions from volcanoes.

Mount Ruang is a stratovolcano , or a steep, conical volcano that has built up over years in layers from explosive eruptions of lava, rock fragments, ash and other properties.

“It is in a part of the world where there are a lot of active volcanoes,” said Dr. Tracy K.P. Gregg , who chairs the geology department at the University at Buffalo.

Its last major eruption was in 2002, when the column of lava and ash that it spewed reached up to 17 miles, Dr. Gregg said.

She said the volcano in 2002 measured 4, a “large” volcano on the Volcanic Explosivity Index, a scale used to measure the strength of an eruption by looking at several factors, such as duration, ash volume and plume height. Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines in 1991 measured 6 on the index. Mount St. Helens in the United States in 1980 measured 5.

“So it is a little bit smaller than that,” she said of Mount Ruang. Right now, it is not as violent as the previous eruption, she added, but the volcano cannot be fully assessed while it is in progress.

More than 300 volcanic earthquakes were detected over a period of at least two weeks preceding the eruption of Mount Ruang.

It is not immediately clear why the volcano erupted when it did. “Every volcano has its own personality,” she said.

In the past few years, several volcanoes in Indonesia have erupted. In December, 2023, the bodies of 11 hikers were found on the slopes of Mount Marapi on the island of Sumatra, after an eruption that spewed an ash column of nearly 3,000 meters — about 10,000 feet high.

In December 2022, more than 1,900 people were evacuated from the area surrounding Mount Semeru as it erupted. In an eruption there the previous December , more than 50 people were killed and hundreds more were injured.
