Finnish symphonic metaller Tarja (ex-Nightwish) has announced her upcoming 2023 ‘Living The Dream Tour,’ which is set to hit 12 U.S. cities this June. Support will come from Armored Dawn, all dates are listed below.

The official trek reveal states, “ The tour will support her most recent album Best Of: Living The Dream, which was released December 2nd, 2022 via earMUSIC. The album reflects back on the past 15 years of the singer’s solo career, featuring TARJA’s most well-known tracks, as well as her personal favorites from all six studio albums – ‘My Winter Storm,’‘What Lies Beneath,’ ‘Colours in the Dark,’ ‘The Brightest Void,’ ‘The Shadow Self’ and ‘In the Raw’ – as well as her new single ‘Eye Of The Storm.’ ”

They add, “ Following the release of Best Of, TARJA was presented with 6 Impala Awards commemorating more than 250,000 sales in Europe for her albums, Beauty And The Beat, Act II, Luna Park Ride, The Shadow Self, In The Raw and From Spirits And Ghosts (Score For A Dark Christmas) .”

Tarja Announces "Living the Dream" 2023 Tour 💭

Today, award-winning Finnish heavy metal artist TARJA announced her upcoming 2023 Living the Dream Tour . Produced by Live Nation, the 12-city run kicks off on Wednesday, June 14 in Philadelphia, PA at Theatre of The Living Arts, with stops across the U.S. in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, and more before wrapping up on Friday, June 30 in Berkeley, CA at The UC Theater.

The tour will support her most recent album Best Of: Living The Dream , which was released December 2 via earMUSIC . The album was released in the U.S. digitally and as a Digipak CD, and will be available in deluxe formats coming out on February 24: a Limited 2CD+Blu-ray Mediabook, 2LP (Gatefold, 180g, black), Limited Crystal Clear 2LP (Gatefold, 180g), and a Limited Box Set. All configurations are available here . The album reflects back on the past 15 years of the singer's solo career, featuring TARJA's most well-known tracks, as well as her personal favorites from all six studio albums — "My Winter Storm," "What Lies Beneath," "Colours in the Dark," "The Brightest Void," "The Shadow Self," and "In the Raw" — as well as her new single "Eye Of The Storm." Following the release of Best Of, TARJA was presented with six Impala Awards commemorating more than 250,000 sales in Europe for her albums, Beauty And The Beat, Act II, Luna Park Ride, The Shadow Self, In The Raw, and From Spirits and Ghosts (Score For a Dark Christmas).

ABOUT TARJA: The brightest star of the symphonic rock scene, Tarja Turunen is certainly the most internationally well-known Finnish voice in the world of music. Soprano, composer, and songwriter, she reached international fame co-founding and being for nine years the voice and image of the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, collecting with them Gold and Platinum Record Awards in several countries. The unique combination of metal music with Tarja's soprano lead vocals gave birth to a new genre, quickly achieving critical and commercial popularity and inspiring many other metal bands and performers. But singing only somebody else's creations was not her destiny, and her talent could fully bloom only outside that crate. Tarja had to walk alone. Finally free to follow her own inspirations, heart, and dreams, Tarja started her own solo career successfully devoted to both classical and rock music. Tarja was nominated for the Emma Award in Finland in 2006 and 2007 and for the Echo Award in Germany in 2007, and she is the first Finnish solo artist to achieve a Gold Record in Germany and even more, the only one to do it both in a band and as solo artist. In 2015 and 2016, she was also busy starring as coach in two seasons of The Voice of Finland , which is the most watched TV-program from Channel 4 in Finland and leading her team to victory for two years in a row, something that never happened before in the history of the Finnish show. After over 15 years of a solo career, it was finally time to celebrate. TARJA ‘In The Raw’ Album Review & Tour Dates

Blame Finnish singer Tarja Turunen for everything I am musically these days. 

It was hearing her clarion call in the chorus of Nightwish’s “ Nemo ” that made me sit bolt upright one fateful night about five years ago. She got me woke to the wonderful world of power metal in general and of women metal vocalists in particular.

The brilliant soprano behind the best material the symphonic metal legends have ever done and a renowned solo performer in her own right since 2006 has a singular voice, often copied but never duplicated. Her classical training tinges everything she does and gives the hardest metal a sheen and elegance that is uniquely her own.

Tarja ’s latest solo album, ‘ In the Raw ,’ continues in her tradition of releasing a rock/metal album after releasing a more classically oriented piece, although this time, 2016’s ‘ The Shadow Self ‘ followed 2015’s ‘ Ave Maria: En Plein Air ,’ so now we’re at two rock ones in a row.

The first single, “ Dead Promises ,” with Bjorn “Speed” Strid  of Soilwork, crushes with sparkling delayed guitars pierced by her operatic “ aahhs .” In the verses, she holds back and lets him shine – both in singing and growling – but on the choruses, she takes charge. She is naturally born to collaborate, it seems, and she’s an expert at it, giving and taking in precise measure. The lyrics are ambiguous, referring to either an addiction pulling people apart or the breakdown of a relationship.

“ Goodbye Stranger ,” with Lacuna Coil’s Cristina Scabbia , is built on a swinging, crunchy riff, and boy, do their voices blend well – think her duet with Sharon den Adel in “ Paradise ” for Within Temptation. They alternate both big chunks of the song and individual lines in a very unaffected, and again, natural, manner. The sentiment here seems to be about finding a new beginning, but having to experience the tough times first.

“ Tears in Rain ” boasts the coolest accompanying video I’ve seen in a long time (streaming below), turning our delicate flower Tarja into a rough-and-tumble roller derby girl. It relates the memories of a relationship that are slowly fading with time. The title is a lovely metaphor, full of regret, but not maudlin, more a gentle reminiscence (“ I wish I could feel / But I can’t remember “), knowing that she might move on, but she will never forget (“I will write another storyline “).

“ Railroads ” lets that operatic training burst forth, her voice ringing alongside a powerful syncopated string melody. It’s very reminiscent of something Nightwish would do, with layers upon musical layers and lyrics that are more images than a story or a plot. Her restraint is admirable here – it ends leaving you wanting a bit more, which is always good.

“ You and I ” is a piano-based orchestral arrangement that’s simply stunning. Tarja ’s phrasing, her precise diction, her superb command of emotion conveys gratitude and love without corniness or schmaltz. She never oversings nor over-arranges – the track swells dramatically and logically with the final chorus, but then quickly backs down to let her deliver the last few delicate lines almost without accompaniment.

“ The Golden Chamber ,” made up of several movements, including “ Loputon Yo ” (sung in Finnish), is a dreamy and drifting instrumental interlude, again much like something Nightwish would do. “ Spirits of the Sea ” is primal and dark, organic and sometimes atonal. This is another example of it not being the words as a whole, but the images certain lines convey and the sounds of those words and phrases that are important. Tarja’s not afraid to be lyrically obtuse at times.

The final collaboration is “ Silent Masquerade ,” done with Tommy Karevik of Kamelot. It starts and ends with a spoken-word reading and is propelled by a gorgeously rich piano riff. Karevik has a certain Broadway quality to his voice that makes this another natural pairing, although she clearly uses him as shading on this track and not as a true duetting partner.

“ Serene ” seems very much about self-reliance, like finding that part within that you can use to reassure and cope (“ I’m gonna capture the silence / Dress up in your fear / And harbor your ocean “).

“ Shadow Play ” again relies on the syncopated rhythmic choral singing and orchestra backing that seems inescapable for her, and that’s not a criticism. Here, she could be making a veiled reference to her past with Nightwish, if you choose to interpret it as such. She speaks of “ a girl who had no name / dressed as an angel in disguise, ” and refers to a “ marionette ,” that is, being controlled. She then moves on to find herself (“ She made a deal with the enemy and let her fences fall / From the dust she built a door to frame new memories “) and then says she is “ now the puppeteer ,” that is, in control – moving “ one day at a time not trying to please .”

‘ In the Raw ‘ continues to develop and refine the sound Tarja is establishing for herself, while acknowledging the influences that shaped her.

Playing with Tarja on her current tours are guitarist Julian Barrett , bassist Doug Wimbish , keyboardist Christian Kretschmar , cellist Max Lilja , and drummer Timm Schreiner . She’s hit Russia and Latin America this fall, before the Finland run of Christmas dates starting in November to close the year, then 2020 sees her touring Europe in earnest.

Tarja announced her upcoming European tour. Special guest on this tour will be Marko Hietala and it is the ‘Living the Dream Together’-tour that will start in September 2024.

TARJA TURUNEN Hopes To Complete New Rock Solo Album In 2024

In a new interview with Chas Byrne , Tarja Turunen spoke about the possibility of new music from the former NIGHTWISH singer in the not-too-distant future. She said (as transcribed by BLABBERMOUTH.NET ): "I'm writing new songs all the time, preparing the songs for the new album, new rock album. I hope [I will be] wrapping things up in January, February next year before all the touring starts again, because there will be a lot of touring involved next year. I'll go on tour March with Marko Hietala from NIGHTWISH . We go to South America. I do in Germany also a tour, 'Rock Meets Classic' , together with SUPERTRAMP guys, [members of] ULTRAVOX — legends, I go on tour with them in April. And in May, I will be in Mexico having a tour on my own. And then it's the summer already, summer festivals and more touring to do at the end of the year. So there's a lot of things. It's a lot, but I hope to come out with the album next year. Absolutely."

Turunen released "Dark Christmas" , the sequel of her 2017 album "From Spirits And Ghosts (Score For A Dark Christmas)" , on November 10. The LP includes enchanting and captivating renditions of well-known Christmas carols, such as WHAM! 's "Last Christmas" , Mariah Carey 's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" , Paul McCartney 's "Wonderful Christmastime" , classics such as "Jingle Bells" , "Frosty The Snowman" and "Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer" , as well as Tarja 's brand new original song "Dark Christmas" . The release is accompanied by 12 music videos — a video for each album song, as well as a full-length music feature film made available with Dolby Atmos immersive audio mix on all supporting platforms.

Turunen , who boasts a three-and-a-half octave vocal range, has released five rock/metal solo records since 2007 — including her latest, 2019's "In The Raw" .

Turunen was fired from NIGHTWISH at the end of the band's 2005 tour by being presented with an open letter which was published on the NIGHTWISH web site at the same time.

Regarding the marrying of metal and classical music, Tarja told Kerrang! magazine: "Both styles have so much in common. I feel music is just emotion. It can connect people from whatever background. It's a very personal experience, we all have things we like and don’t like, but ultimately music is just emotion. Metal and classical music are both very emotional genres."

Ex-NIGHTWISH Members TARJA TURUNEN And MARKO HIETALA Announce Upcoming Concert

Former NIGHTWISH members Tarja Turunen and Marko “Marco” Hietala are set to perform at a special open-air concert on July 8 at Z7 Summer Nights in Pratteln, Switzerland

The reunion of the two ex- NIGHTWISH members is set to be a massive event for fans of the band. As of this point, only the one date has been announced for the reunited duo.

Tarja was fired from NIGHTWISH after the band’s 2005 tour by being presented with an open letter which was also published on the band’s official website. The letter read: “To you, unfortunately, business, money, and things that have nothing to do with emotions have become much more important.”

NIGHTWISH keyboardist Tuomas Holopainen would later call the decision to let Turunen go “the most difficult thing I ever had to do.” Tarja said the way she was fired from NIGHTWISH proved that her former bandmates were not her friends.

Back in 2019, Tarja dismissed rumors that she was returning to NIGHTWISH after her December 2017 onstage reunion with the band’s then-bassist/vocalist Marko Hietala in Hämeenlinna, Finland.

“I know a lot of fans would love to see something happen, but it’s a very long distance away,” she told Kerrang! magazine. “Personally, I don’t see anything happening with me and them, to be perfectly honest. Marco came a little later into the band; he wasn’t there since the beginning. He was always a guy I was close to. Me and Tuomas Holopainen, however, haven’t seen each other in a long time… but we have been in touch. It’s not bad. The past is what it is; we can’t change that. We can only change the future.”

Just over a year ago, Tarja was asked in an interview if she would ever consider doing a tour with NIGHTWISH if her and her ex-bandmates were able to work things out. She responded: “It is very, very hypothetical that all what you said will happen, first of all — it’s very, very hypothetical.

“I’m living in a world, like we are all living in a world, that things happen without us noticing,” she continued. “I mean, I can’t really close any doors in that sense; I’m not that kind of person any longer. I learned so many things in this life already. I take them as they are.

“So I don’t know. It would be very hypothetically possible,” she added. “It would be unlikely to happen.”

Marko Hietala announced his departure from NIGHTWISH in January 2021, explaining in a statement that he hadn’t “been able to feel validated by this life for a quite a few years now.” He has since been replaced by session bassist Jukka Koskinen ( WINTERSUN ).

Tarja to release ‘Dark Christmas’ album on Nov. 10

Finnish singer and former Nightwish frontwoman Tarja is bringing the festive season early this year with the release of “Dark Christmas,” the sequel to her 2017 album “From Spirits and Ghosts (Score for a Dark Christmas),” on Nov. 10, 2023, via earMUSIC. Pre-order it here .

Using the sound of an orchestra and the playfulness of a children’s choir, Tarja blends her classically trained voice with darker gothic influences for an eerie, cinematic soundtrack to the world’s most beloved Christmas tunes.

The album features renditions of well-known Christmas carols, such as Wham!’s “Last Christmas,” Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” and Paul McCartney’s “Wonderful Christmastime,” classics such as “Jingle Bells,” “Frosty the Snowman” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” as well as Tarja’s new original song “Dark Christmas.”

“It was fascinating to dive into this new world,” Tarja said. “You will appreciate these Christmas songs with our spooky arrangements truly sound in a way they never did before. It was my pleasure to team up once again with Jim Dooley and Tim Palmer. I hope you will dig in our take of a Dark Christmas spirit.” 

The release is accompanied by 12 music videos—one for each album song—as well as a full-length music feature film made available with Dolby Atmos immersive audio mix on all supporting platforms.

The album’s first single is “ Frosty the Snowman ,” with Tarja transforming the usually joyful song into a haunting winter ballad. Watch the video below.

“Dark Christmas” will be released on 1CD Digipak, 2LP (Gatefold, 180g, black), Ltd. Christmas Green Splatter 2LP (Gatefold, 180g) and on digital.
