Sightseeing Tours of Los Angeles From the Air

Connor Vaughan/EyeEm/Getty Images

There are many ways to see Los Angeles , and one of the most fascinating is to fly low over famous landmarks and celebrity homes in a small plane or helicopter or for the more adventurous, an open-air light sport aircraft. Within close proximity to LA, you can also enjoy the thrill of taking a flying lesson, piloting a stunt biplane or taking the controls of a light attack aircraft in air-to-air combat or check a hot-air balloon ride off your bucket list. In most cases, if you and your party are booking the whole plane, helicopter, or balloon, you can customize what you want to see in the allotted time you're paying for - within local air regulations.

If you're looking to get some great aerial photographs, helicopter tours are your best bet, and most of the companies can help you rent gyrostabilizers to eliminate blur from helicopter vibration if you don't have your own gear.

Many of the tour companies also offer flying lessons. A 30-minute preview lesson can be a real bargain compared to the cost of a tour.

Pacific Blue Air Adventure Flights From Hawthorne

Every tour with Pacific Blue Air is a flight lesson in an open-air light sport aircraft with just you and your flight instructor. What you can see depends on the duration of your lesson from 30 to 90 minutes. From the Hawthorne flight base south of LAX , that's the difference between sticking to beach cities or seeing the entire LA Basin.

This isn't exactly a romantic option since you would be in a separate aircraft from your partner, but it's still a heck of an exciting gift for that special occasion for the adventurer in your life.

You are not allowed to carry a camera, phone, or any loose items on your flight due to the danger of things getting caught in the rear propeller, but they have on-board cameras that shoot still photos and video of your flight that you can purchase for an additional fee.

Star Helicopters From Hawthorne

Kayte Deioma

Star Helicopters flies out of the Hawthorne Municipal Airport just 3 miles from LAX. With their limo service (or an Uber, Lyft or taxi), you can get from LAX to your helicopter flight in just a few minutes and fit in an air tour of LA on a 4-hour layover. In addition to their pre-packaged tours of the city's highlights, their services are completely customizable. As a bonus for aerial photographers, they have their own gyrostabilizer that you can rent for the day for a competitive rate.

Helicopter Tours From Van Nuys

Van Nuys Airport in the Valley has the greatest number of helicopter tour operators. It's a relatively convenient departure location if you're in the Valley, on the West Side of LA or in Hollywood and aren't trying to get there during rush hour.

  • Jetboy Helicopters has package tours from 20 to 45 minuted departing from Van Nuys. Options include the 30-minute  One-Oh-One Tour that flies from Van Nuys along the 101 Freeway over movie studios and Hollywood into Downtown LA. They have a champagne and rose Romance add-on available for any flight.
  • Air Tours LA has both helicopter and small plane tours of the Los Angeles Basin and coastline, as well as a 3-hour private Catalina airplane flight with lunch at Catalina's Airport in the Sky.
  • Elite Helicopter Tours , owned by National Helicopter Service, offers a variety of daytime and nighttime flights from 30 to 90 minutes also departing from Van Nuys Airport. You can head up the Malibu coast or inland over Hollywood and Downtown Los Angeles . Charters and in-house pro aerial photography and cinematography services are also available.
  • Flying High Helicopters also offers day and night flights out of Van Nuys covering the same territory. They also have a couple different romance packages and a 3rd-passenger-rides-half-price special.
  • Lite Flight Helicopter Tours offers similar tours to the others with options from 10 minutes to an hour. They also offer a price match guarantee for the same duration flight on any competitor with at least a 4-star Yelp review.

Orbic Air Helicopter Tours From Burbank

Orbic Tours from Burbank Airport include regular air-only tours over movie studios, Hollywood, movie stars' homes, Downtown LA, or the coast. They also offer unique landing tour options that make a stop for a picnic on a Malibu mountaintop or on top of a Downtown LA skyscraper for a really once-in-a-lifetime-experience.

Burbank is a convenient departure location if you're near Universal Studios or in Hollywood or Downtown LA.

OC Helicopters

If you're staying in Orange County , OC Helicopters, departing from a private terminal at John Wayne Airport, can cater to your flight needs from coastal tours and romantic sunset proposals to business charters or elaborate heli-dine experiences with limos and security details as needed. You can go whale-watching from the air in season. They're also certified for heli-skydiving and heli-scuba diving.

Non-airport landings come with a steep price tag, so if you have to ask how much, you probably can't afford the pictured picnic at a scenic landing, but you can bring your own basket on a charter flight and dine in the air.

Helicopters Tours From Long Beach

There are several companies offering daytime and nighttime helicopter tours out of Long Beach with options from coastal exploration to a Hollywood flyover, a flight to a wine tour or a hop over to Catalina Island . Long Beach is a closer departure point than Van Nuys if you're in Downtown LA and it's also a reasonable option if you're near Disneyland.

  • Anthelion Helicopter Tours  depart from Long Beach Airport
  • Island Express Helicopters  depart adjacent to the Queen Mary
  • Los Angeles Helicopters  depart from Long Beach Airport

Hangar 21 Helicopters in Fullerton

The Fullerton Airport is a convenient starting point if you're staying near Disneyland or Knott's Berry Farm and want an air tour of the Los Angeles area. They also have 30 to 60-minute tour options to Long Beach or Orange County Beaches. They also offer private one-hour sunset flights with champagne.

Advanced Flight Helicopter Tours From Torrance

Advanced Flight offers helicopter tours of Long Beach and the Palos Verdes Peninsula, LA Beaches, and Hollywood departing from the Torrance Airport, convenient to the South Bay Beach Cities.

Celebrity Airplane and Helicopter Tours from Carson

Celebrity Helicopter Tours offer a variety of airplane and helicopter tours from quick 15 minute rides to fancy 75-minute deluxe tours departing from the Carson Airport. You can see over those high walls protecting movie stars' homes, or see Hollywood lit up at night from above. Their service seems to have declined in recent years according to their high number of negative Yelp reviews.

SkyThrills Biplane Thrill Ride out of Fullerton

Co-pilot or just ride along in a 1935 Classic Aerobatic Biplane for mild maneuvers, or choose the Extreme Stunt Biplane for daring rolls, loops, and spins. You can also take an Air Combat flight for added adventure. More relaxing vintage plane rides are also available.

Air Tours LA Small Plane Tours out of Van Nuys

Air Tours LA offers both helicopter and plane tours, but is better known for their private plane tours along the coast, over the city or all the way to Catalina for lunch or Santa Ynez for wine tasting.

Biplane Rides out of Compton

Biplane Fun offers rides in vintage WWII biplanes departing from the Compton Airport and flying over Long Beach, Palos Verdes, and Redondo Beach .

Sunrise Hot Air Balloon Rides Over Temecula

Chip Morton/Visit Temecula Valley

Many people have a hot air balloon ride on their bucket list. You can take a group, semi-private, or private sunrise hot air balloon ride over Temecula wine country. Flights are available for all ages 48 inches or taller. Various configurations are available from different companies.

Air Tours & Boat Tours in Los Angeles

Taking a tour of LA by air or sea is one of the best ways for the entire family to enjoy the city. For a truly unparalleled view of the entire county of Los Angeles, nothing is more exciting than an airplane or helicopter tour. While soaring high above the City of Angels, tourists and locals alike will love the rare opportunity to see with their own eyes the picturesque sights which decorate thousands of postcards. During the day, anyone can enjoy countless birds-eye views of LA, including views of the San Fernando Valley, the Santa Monica Mountain Range, the Rosebowl and Getty Center. For a truly magical experience, a sunset tour allows you to witness the glittering lights of the city sparkle on slowly as the daylight begins to fade. One of the best ways to truly appreciate the sunny state of California is to climb aboard a beautiful yacht and watch the stunning coastline sail by on a boat tour. Though this may not be the most common way to see the sights of any city, it is certainly one of the best; something about taking a cruise tour makes everyone feel like royalty. Day or night, the Mediterranean climate of southern California provides the ideal setting for dining and dancing on the Pacific Ocean. Champagne brunch cruises leaving from Marina del Rey or Long Beach are perfect for anyone who wants to bask in the sun while enjoying a sweeping view of sandy beaches and world-famous coastal towns. As dusk approaches, sunset dinner cruises become gold mines for postcard pictures when the famous coastal towns are splashed in fiery hues of amber and rose.

Breaking news, bark air launches first luxury airlines for dogs — but charges $16k for ‘white paw service’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Dog toy company BARK will launch a jet charter service that promises “white paw service” — though it will cost as much as $16,000 for a round-trip ticket for just one pooch and its doting owner.

Dubbed BARK Air, the company best known for its subscription BarkBoxes filled with pet toys and treats, seeks to solve the problems that typically arise when humans travel with their fur babies.

Though smaller dogs can typically ride in a carrier placed under the seat in front of them, larger dogs must undergo what’s known to be the stressful experience of being put in crates in a plane’s cargo space.

“We are excited to take the insights we’ve learned over years to create an experience that is truly dog-first, which is drastically different from just accepting dogs — from the ground to the skies,” Matt Meeker, the co-founder and chief executive at BARK, said in a press release Thursday.

BARK Air’s first flight departs from New York’s Westchester County Airport to Los Angeles’s Van Nuys Airport on May 23.

Currently, there are only two flight routes available, both from Westchester County Airport to either Van Nuys Airport — which costs $6,000 one way for one dog and one human — or to London’s Stansted Airport — which goes for $8,000 one way.

Following booking, humans are connected with a BARK concierge assigned to collect information about their four-legged passengers to ensure the best possible experience during the long-haul flight.

But BARK Air won’t just be pet friendly — it will treat its four-legged passengers like first-class passengers, the New York-based company said.

On travel day, dogs and their owners are only required to show up at the airport 45 minutes ahead of their scheduled flight time “for a simple, efficient check-in process — no crates, no stressful TSA checkpoints,” per BARK Air’s website .

From there, concierges will bring the dogs aboard to a cabin prepared with calming aids such as music, warm lavender-scented refreshment towels, and pheromones — scents that mimic the natural chemicals released by animals that help them communicate — among other comforts.

Treats, noise-canceling ear muffs, and calming jackets will also be on hand as part of BARK’s “Dogs Fly First” flight prep, which ensures that each pooch is comfortable upon takeoff.

The dogs are offered a beverage at takeoff and descent to help their ears adjust to cabin pressurization.

“We believe this initiative will raise awareness of BARK’s mission in a cost-effective manner,” said Zahir Ibrahim, BARK’s Chief Financial Officer. “Given we are not committed to booking flights far in advance, we have a lot of flexibility to opportunistically charter flights during times of high demand.”

Users on social media, however, panned the sky-high fares.

“Was so excited for this but am mind blown at the $6k price tag. Hopefully y’all can make this much more affordable in the future,” one user commented on BARK Air’s Instagram post introducing the luxe airline.

“I would genuinely love to see the data that convinced you to believe $12K round trip tickets are a viable business model and one worth marketing to the general public,” another said.

A third said a $6,000 to $8,000 fare for just one way “is ridiculous.”

It wasn’t immediately clear which jet charter company BARK is partnering with for its pet-friendly trips.

The Post has sought comment from BARK.

News | Students from San Fernando Valley schools get insider tour of Van Nuys Airport

los angeles airplane tour

Students from two San Fernando Valley high schools were treated to an aviation career exploration tour at Van Nuys Airport on Friday, April 12, sponsored by Clay Lacy Aviation and the North Valley Occupational Center.

Arleta High School and Polytechnic High School students got to see Clay Lacy Aviation’s hanger closeup as part of an aviation career tour at the airport. They delved into the world of aviation and learned about career opportunities not only as pilots or flight attendants but also as attorneys, mechanics and customer service professionals — to name a few.

“(Today) gave them a spark of curiosity,” said Van Nuys Airport Manager Paul Herrera.

Herrera believes this type of exposure to youth inspires the next generation of aviation professionals, by showcasing the industry’s opportunities.

Nicole Lillingston, a 17-year-old junior at Arleta High School, was one of two dozen students who saw firsthand the many facets of airport operations, from aircraft maintenance facilities to air traffic control towers.

“My future is in music,” Lillingston said. “But it was interesting to see the workshops and how they make engines and work on an actual plane.”

She admitted that becoming a pilot could be her plan B.

Her classmate, Monique De Nava, is set on becoming an ultrasound technician, but her plan B could also be to get a pilot license.

“I liked the energy (here),” De Nava said. “It was nice and welcoming. Aviation offers a lot of opportunities.”

Fewer than 10% of licensed pilots in the U.S. are women, and the percent of women in maintenance fields is in the single digits, according to a 2022 report by the Women in Aviation Advisory Board established by the U.S. Congress.

While participation of women in the overall U.S. workforce has increased dramatically in four decades, the percentage in aviation hasn’t appreciably changed, according to the report.

And as part of the day’s events, 19 students who graduated from the North Valley Occupational Center’s aircraft mechanic tech program, based at the airport, were given scholarships.

Mechanics and technicians require a Federal Aviation Administration license to work on airplanes, and the scholarships help them achieve that goal, according to Emilio Mendez, assistant principal of the program.

“We have received $80,000-plus in scholarships from Clay Lacy over the past eight years,” Mendez said.

Nabi Hemmatyar, a mechanic at a Van Nuys-based jet maintenance facility specializing in Gulfstream aircrafts, was among the recipients.

The 23-year-old, who has an affinity for World War II aircraft, cemented his dream in aviation after visiting a Camarillo airplane museum.

“On one of the slower days, they showed me the maintenance hangers where they work on airplanes and asked me if I wanted to take out some spark plugs of a (Grumman) F8F Bearcat,” Hemmatyar said. “How cool was that? I was hooked. I still volunteer there.”

Hemmatyar said his job requires heavy-duty maintenance.

“If a jet breaks down, it could be disastrous,” he added. “The work that we do is critical to the safety of the flight.”

Tom Watson hopes players ‘do something’ and mend the PGA Tour-LIV Golf split

Tom Watson hits the ceremonial tee shot during the first round of the Masters at Augusta National Golf Course.

The professional golf world is bumping along down two separate paths, the PGA Tour and LIV Golf , and those have converged at the Masters .

This is the first time since last year’s U.S. Open that all of the game’s best players have convened to compete against each other.

Noticing that, two-time Masters winner Tom Watson felt the urge to say something about it this week at the annual Champions Dinner, which was honoring defending champion Jon Rahm , who since has defected to the LIV tour.

“We were sitting down and we were having great stories about [late Masters champion] Seve Ballesteros and people were laughing and talking,” Watson said Thursday, after opening tee times were pushed back an hour for inclement weather.

Five surprising things you should know about the Masters

A special tree, unique seats and rookie housing are among the surprising elements at Augusta National Golf Club, which hosts the Masters.

April 11, 2024

Watson and fellow legends Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player participated in the traditional start to the tournament, hitting their ceremonial tee shots on No. 1.

At the dinner on Tuesday night, Watson wanted to say a few words, so he asked Augusta National chairman Fred Ridley if that would be OK. Ridley said, “Please do.”

“I got up and said, ‘I’m looking around the room, and I’m seeing just a wonderful experience everyone is having,’” Watson said. “They are jovial. They are having a great time. They are laughing. I said, ‘Ain’t it good to be together again?’

“And there was kind of a pall from the joviality and it quieted down… In a sense, I hope that the players themselves took that to say, ‘You know, we do have to do something.’”

Watson said Thursday that golf has been “fractured” by the two competing tours fighting over the best players in the game.

There are 13 LIV players competing in this year’s Masters, including Rahm; Phil Mickelson and Brooks Koepka , who tied for second in last year’s tournament; and Patrick Reed , who finished fourth.

Defending Masters champion Jon Rahm is among the LIV Golf players competing at Augusta National Golf Club this weekend.

“We want to get together like we were at the Champions Dinner, happy, the best players playing against each other,” said Watson, flanked at a news conference by Nicklaus and Player. “The bottom line, that’s what we want in professional golf, and right now we don’t have it.”

Of the many issues that need to be resolved, sorting out who is invited to the Masters is a big one. Players who defect for LIV cannot play in PGA Tour events. They can compete in the Masters and the other three major championships if they qualify.

One of those ways to qualify involves their world ranking, but players don’t receive Official World Golf Ranking points for LIV events. So the field of LIV golfers in the Masters could dwindle by the year.

That means even fewer chances for the world’s best players to compete against each other.

“There’s a lot of people a lot smarter than me that could figure this out in a much more efficient way,” Rahm said. “But the obvious answer is that there’s got to be a way for certain players in whatever tour to be able to earn their way in.”

Rory McIlroy hits out of the rough on the 14th hole during the final round of the 2023 U.S. Open

Can Rory McIlroy finally win the Masters to complete his elusive career grand slam?

Rory McIlroy needs to win the Masters to earn a career grand slam, but he’ll have to hold off LIV stars and his nerves to score a green jacket.

April 10, 2024

Ridley noted that because the Masters is an invitational event, the tournament has the leeway to invite players who might not otherwise qualify, as is the case with some up-and-coming international golfers.

“If we felt there were a player or players, whether they played on the LIV tour or any other tour, who were deserving of an invitation to the Masters,” he said, “we would exercise that discretion with regard to special invitations.”

By late Thursday afternoon, Bryson DeChambeau was leading the tournament at seven under par. He’s a LIV golfer. This isn’t going away.
