50 YEARS EXPERIENCE IN VENICE LOUISIANA FISHING

Lodging in Venice the last 37 years

Venice is located on the final leg of the Mississippi River, virtually at the end of Hwy 23. That’s right where the road ends and meets the waters that’s where we are which in turn because the Mississippi River dumps a tremendous amount of water and nutrition into the Delta area of Venice, creating one of the most prolific areas to fish in the world, with many species available. That being said Venice without a doubt is the number one destination for trophy size Reds along with “slot” reds that are the smaller size reds and this is what Capt. Mike, his sons and his other captains specialize in. Year round action, that’s right YEAR ROUND Redfish are abundant in the marsh areas of Venice.

The quality found nowhere else that defines Louisiana’s fishery is the size of fish! Louisiana Redfish Fishing

louisiana redfish fishing trips

Best Redfishing in the World!

The Louisiana Mississippi  Delta Marsh is the best habitat for Redfish in the world. It only makes sense there are more redfish in this marsh than anywhere else in the world. These fish are hearty and can be caught wherever they are, just about any time. Sight fishing for redfish is challenging and very exciting as they typically inhale angler's well placed flies. Louisiana's giant bull redfish are easily accessed at the outer points reaching into the Gulf of Mexico. The best time to book is in October, November and December as the marsh transitions from Summer to Winter.

Louisiana Marsh, Flats, & Inshore Fishing Charters

Louisiana is the redfish capital of the world.

Louisiana

The Louisiana Gulf Coast has the best estuaries and marsh structure in the entire world. This is why the state’s motto is the Sportsman Paradise. Whether we are fishing large open bays that are covered in oyster reefs, fishing the back marsh, or duck ponds there is no other place like the inshore fishing grounds of Louisiana.

Calcasieu Lake has been nationally heralded as a trophy speckled trout paradise.

Venice, Louisiana and Hopedale, Louisiana have been voted the Sport Fishing Capital of the World by ESPN.

  • For 2 anglers cost is $900.00

Louisiana

Venice and Hopedale Fishing

Venice la is the sport fishing capitol of the world for both inshore and offshore fishing. well known for its world class speckled trout and redfish fishery, it not only has large numbers of both, but it also boasts many trophy sized speckled trout and bull redfish..

You can sight fish for slot sized redfish and monster jackfish in the shallow marsh ponds or go out to the oyster reefs and catch world class speckled trout and redfish on top-waters. All fishing is done from the boat either drift fishing or sight fishing in marsh ponds, over oyster reefs, or on the beach front.

The best months are from March until December for numbers of trout and redfish. The biggest factor in fishing these two areas will be the influx of freshwater from the Mississippi River. The less freshwater means the bite is on fire!!!! Hopedale and Breton Sound Area is a great place to catch large numbers of speckled trout and sight fish for redfish in the marsh or duck ponds. The marsh ponds for sight fishing redfish turn on in May until September. This area consists of large open bays with large oyster reefs throughout all of the bays and lakes. This is a great place for light tackle sight fishing or fly fishing.

Catch & release.

Yes the limits are more liberal in Louisiana, but we do not allow our guides to keep their limits of fish. to give to you or your group. Our guides don't fish and will not contribute to the box. Please understand, if you plan on taking fish home you're only allowed a 2 day possession limit. We emphasize catch all you want and keep only what you need to eat. Catch and release is the standard policy on fly fishing, no exceptions!!! We don't keep oversized redfish. We are looking out for the future of the great fishery and making sure that our children and our grandchildren can tell stories of catching a hundred speckled trout a day and fifty redfish a day.

Louisiana Redfish Charter Guide

We offer guided fly fishing and spinning rod trips in the salt water marshes south of New Orleans, making us one of the premiere Louisiana Redfish Charter Guide services.  Since we are located in the city, we can fish on either the east or west side of the Mississippi River depending on the time of year and conditions, with Port Sulphur and Venice on the west side and Hopedale and Delacroix on the east.

The early fall when the big fish come back into the marsh from offshore is prime time but the fishing is spectacular all year round. The primary target is to catch and release giant redfish but black drum, sheepshead, jack crevalle, speckled trout and even giant alligator gar populate the same waters.

Trips usually start around 8:00am and go till around 4:00 because the sun needs to be up to be able to see the fish.  In the hotter months trips start earlier so we aren’t out there in the hottest part of the day.

Louisiana Redfish Charter Guide

Boat & Gear

My boat is a seventeen foot Maverick Mirage II with a 90 horsepower Suzuki.  It has a custom front casting platform with a rail for added stability.  This flats skiff is ideal for fishing the marshes and bayous that surround New Orleans.

All gear is provided.   I tie my own spoon flies and have many crab and shrimp patterns under development.  Not to mention plenty of Clouser minnows and poppers.  I always keep a 10 or 12 weight fly rod rigged and ready in case we see a Jack feeding.  If you want to bring your own gear that’s also fine.  For the spinning enthusiast I like to use small suspending crankbaits with inline hooks, gold spoons, and top water baits whenever possible.

Birding Expeditions

The coastal marshes in southeast Louisiana are a fantastic environment for seeing a huge variety of birds. It’s not uncommon to see over 50 species on a trip!

A technical poling skiff is a fantastic way to get close and observe the birds in their natural habitat. I can push pole the boat or use a trolling motor to quietly drift in close when an opportunity presents itself.

Trips last around five hours and I pack lunch and drinks. It is not uncommon to run thirty to fifty miles on a trip depending on the conditions and the time of year. We see various species of hawks, ospreys, harriers and eagles on any given day in the marsh. I really love hunting for the smaller shore birds such as my favorite Oyster Catchers, rails, Black-necked Stilt, avocet, plovers, Killdeer, sandpiper, curlew, and Roseate Spoonbill to name a few. Perhaps what makes this marsh so special is the abundance of water fowl we see. All kinds of ducks inhabitant these coastal wetlands and in huge numbers.

I am relatively new to birding and identifying the various species I encounter is something I have come to really enjoy. I am fortunate to have a brother who runs eco-tours of the delta around Mobile Alabama. benraines.org . He opened my eyes to how extraordinary our marsh is for the birding enthusiast.

Capt. Jeff Raines

Captain Jeffrey Raines grew up fly fishing for trout and bass in the waters surrounding Washington DC. When he was 17 he went on his first redfishing trip in Leeville, Louisiana and ended up attending Loyola University the next fall.  He had his first flat boat by his junior year in college and has been fishing the waters from Grand Isle to the Biloxi marsh ever since.

Raines originally moved to New Orleans to catch fish and to pursue a career in music.  He is the lead guitar player in the New Orleans funk band Galactic and is a co-owner of what many regard as the greatest music venue on the planet, the legendary Tipitinas.  This makes Jeff the ideal Louisiana Redfish Charter Guide for those music fans who love to catch fish!

Orvis Fly Fishing Podcast: Louisiana Redfish Secrets, with Capt. Pete Scafaru

We’ve compiled a list of the questions we get asked the most to help you plan the perfect fishing trip. From the best time of year to fish Louisiana to lodging options to fly casting lessons. We’ve got you covered.

WHERE WE FISH

Our fly fishing guides are dialed-in to the wind and tides. Bring your casting arm, a positive attitude, and sunscreen. We’ll do the rest!

We fish all over southern Louisiana, on the east or west side of the Mississippi River, at the end of the road out of Venice and as far west as Cocodrie. We will work with your interests and schedule and fish out of the best place for you. As we live in New Orleans we like fishing about 35 minutes southeast of New Orleans, Louisiana in the Biloxi Marsh – a big, bountiful area loaded with redfish (5-40 lbs), black drum (10-60 lbs), sheepshead (2-10 lbs), alligator gar (2-6 ft), and jack crevalle (15-30 lbs). Our trips typically launch out of Hopedale, Delacroix, or Shell Beach, but we also fish out of Myrtle Grove, Buras, Venice, and Cocodrie depending on what’s convenient for you.

The inshore marshes of Louisiana fish exceptionally well year-round. Each season – and each day – offers something different. Mother Nature aside, amazing fishing is possible every day of the year. We run guided fly fishing and light tackle trips all year long.

Capt. Peter Scafaru

Fishing Guide, Casting Instructor

Capt. Peter's Bio...

Captain Peter Scafaru, C.I. caught his first fish, a bluegill, at 4 years old on a worm with a cane pole in Ohio.  Thanks, Grandpa! Boy, was he excited about that fish, and his passion continues for all the species he catches to this day.  Growing up spin fishing and baitcasting, he made fun of his older brother who was dabbling with fly fishing, but found it fascinating and started reading everything he could about it and casting in the pool.  As soon as he got a car he began taking trips every weekend to fly fish the wild creeks of northern and eastern Arizona and spent many summers as a trout bum fishing extensively in Arizona, Baja Mexico, New Mexico, Utah, Colorado, California, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Montana, Washington, Florida and Louisiana.  Peter is also an accomplished jazz musician and music instructor and is proud to call New Orleans his home- a place where both the music and fishing is world class.  His knowledge, enthusiasm, and patience with all things fishing will make for a great day with any skill level of anglers.  He is excited to get you out on the water and have some fun catching big fish!

Capt. Michael Leishman

Capt. Michael Leishman was born and raised in South Louisiana outside of New Orleans, and has always enjoyed the fantastic fishing that the “Sportsman’s Paradise” has to offer! He grew up fishing with his father, but when he found fly fishing there was no turning back. Michael worked as a fly casting, fly tying, and fly fishing instructor for The Fly Shop’s “FishCamp” for 5 years, which makes him a versatile fishing guide. He has fished the marshes in Southeast Louisiana all of his life, and has been sight-fishing redfish and other big-game species on the fly since high school. He’s fully insured and a licensed Captain of the Merchant Marines. The joy for Michael in guiding fly fishing trips is going out to a beautiful place, seeing new and exciting things every trip, and watching the joy and excitement from the people he gets to fish with. Join him for a day on the water!

What is a Redfish?

Redfish (Red Drum) , are also commonly referred to as channel bass, spot tail, red bass or reds. Feeding on a combination of crab, shrimp and minnows these fish know how to put up a fight. You’ll know when you hook up with one these guys as the drag will start screaming, and the fight is on.

Known locally as the redfish, Red Drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), is a game fish that makes it’s home from the far inland reaches of our brackish marshes all the way to the green waters of the Gulf of Mexico.

The redfish is a mainstay here at Louisiana Fishing Charters for their impressive fights and abundant numbers in our marshes. Years of experience has helped us develop the most effective techniques for catching them. We want to use this knowledge to take you on the redfish trip of a lifetime.

Artificial Structure Attracts Spring Specks

  • By Todd Masson
  • May 7, 2024

speckled trout caught at Lake Pontchartrain train trestle

The word “artificial” is inherently pejorative. If a food company includes artificial colors or flavors in a particular product, it’ll bury that fact in the list of ingredients. Highlighted on the front of the package will be something like “Packed With Vitamin C,” rather than “Now With More Artificial Flavor.”

That’s true for everything but fishing. Having success with “artificial” lures is viewed as affirmation of skills, and anglers across the fruited plain regularly entreat fisheries managers for more artificial reefs. Louisiana’s Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) has responded to that demand in recent decades by dropping limestone, shell and even bridge rubble in select areas across the coast, and since the state provides easy-to-find coordinates on the LDWF site , the reefs are regularly visited by hopeful anglers.

Still, none is as regularly productive as the 15 miles of artificial reefs in eastern Lake Pontchartrain that were designed for transportation and commerce. Attracting fish is just a happy accident.

Louisiana’s Bridge Fishing

redfish and flounder caught near bridge pilings

Interstate 10, Highway 11 and a train trestle all span a roughly 5-mile gap over Louisiana’s most famous coastal lake. Commuters and engineers see these bridges as a connection between the cities of New Orleans and Slidell, but to anglers, they are just really expensive fish-attractors.

Every year in the spring and fall, speckled trout and flounder join the redfish, sheepshead and black drum that spend all year hiding behind the bridge stanchions to ambush baitfish and shrimp being pushed by tides around the concrete. When the trout arrive, word spreads quickly among the south Louisiana fishing community, and hordes of marauding anglers descend on the bridges.

By far, the train trestle attracts the most attention. Its stanchions are far more tightly packed and are surrounded by scattered rip-rap. This combination attracts more fish than the other two bridges, and consequently, that attracts more anglers. On a calm weekend day in the spring or fall, a latecomer can find it almost impossible to shoehorn within casting distance of the bridge, since most anglers will be soaking live shrimp while on anchor.

As such, trestle diehards prefer to go on weekdays with marginal wind, when they can work stretches of the bridge with artificial lures . The most popular are 3 1 ⁄ 2 – to 4 1 ⁄ 2 -inch paddle tails fished on 3 ⁄ 8 – to 1 ⁄ 2 -ounce jigheads. Standard protocol is to set up on the down-current side of the bridge, and cast as close to the stanchions as possible.

How to Fish Bridges

speckled trout at Louisiana bridges

But, as frequently is the case in fishing, sometimes the rules don’t apply, and the fish are located far off the stanchions or on the upcurrent side. Trestle veterans test all possibilities before abandoning the bridge to try their luck at Highway 11, Interstate 10 or the nearby marsh.

Depths across the span of the bridge range from 8 to 16 feet, and contact with the bottom is almost always essential. Most successful anglers hop the lures back to the boat, allowing them to settle back to the bottom after each hop.

Bites are often subtle ticks that test anglers’ skill and the sensitivity of their equipment. That’s true even though the speckled trout that populate the bridges are consistently some of the largest available to Louisiana anglers. Though the trestle seldom delivers fish over 6 pounds, an average speck there is about 2 pounds.

As a general rule, fishing is best in the spring on a rising tide that’s bringing bait in from outside waters and in the autumn on a falling tide that is sucking white shrimp out of the backwaters. But great trips can still be had on opposite tides during the respective seasons. In the spring, the speck run lasts until about the middle of June, when mature fish move to the salty waters of the big bays and sounds to lay eggs and fertilize them. They typically return sometime in October.

Nearby launches are located in Slidell (Eden Isles and Bayou Liberty) and New Orleans (Rigolets, Lake Catherine and Irish Bayou). The eastern shoreline of Lake Pontchartrain provides reasonable protection on a wind with any east in it. Westerly winds are like kryptonite to the lake’s bridges, dirtying the water, shutting down fish and making for a bumpy, miserable experience. Fortunately, predominant winds in the spring and fall are out of the east, and good days at the bridges are far more common than bad ones.
