While just about any month is great to visit Greece, there are a few prime times of the year for the Greece Island Hopper tour. Here are some recommendations from our destination experts.

Spring: Santorini, Mykonos, and other Greek islands open to tourists in mid- to late April. While the weather is mild, most find the beaches are still chilly for swimming or sunbathing. Minimal crowds yield maximum photo opportunities.

Summer: July and August in Greece are hot! (In extreme heat, it’s possible for the Acropolis to be closed during the hottest hours of the day to protect workers and visitors.) During the summer season, tours only run in early July and late August, when temperatures aren’t as extreme. It’s during these months when many Greeks and other Europeans vacation here, too, making it a busy time to visit.

Fall: With kids back to school, September and October are great times to go on tour. Greece remains very busy, as the tourist season on Santorini and Mykonos extends into October, and the water temperatures offer perfect swimming conditions. There may still be crowds at the Acropolis and other popular sites along the way.

Begin the morning at a local farm where you learn about the traditions and history of cheese making, a craft that in Mykonos achieves almost the status of a local art form with secrets passed down through the generations. Sample Xinotiro, Kopanisti, and Vrasto cheeses and freshly-made yogurt, all produced at the farm. Each is different, too, so there's really no saying whether that next stop will be a buzzing harbour town filled with tavernas or a secret inlet where it's just you and the paint-peeling fishing skiffs.

Spring is a fantastic time to go island hopping in Greece. April and May are true transition months, seeing temperatures rise from the high teens to the high twenties in just a matter of weeks. The best thing is that the summer crowds haven't yet appeared, which means it's a great opportunity to see more popular island-hopping stops – Mykonos, Santorini, Hydra – without oodles of people getting in the way.

The summer is the most popular time to go island hopping in Greece. It's easy to see why: Hot weather (we're talking highs in the 40s and average temps in the 30s) and almost endless sun from June to August. Thankfully, the Ionian and Aegean seas also get good cross winds that make sailing from island to island a cinch, even for inexperienced skippers. What's more, every island on your itinerary will be in full flow when the summer months are rolling. The parties in Ios will be off the hook. The chic eateries in Mykonos will all be open. The resort hotels of Crete will be raring to go.

Let's make it simple: Autumn is a downright stunning time to come to Greece. Virtually everywhere is still warm, but the mercury does slacken off a little to give more pleasant evenings. Averages are in the low- to mid-20s, and rains rarely come until the end of September. More than that, the colours on the mountains are a palette of ochre and red, while the seas are at their warmest (think 22 in the Aegean!).

It's not totally impossible to go Greek island hopping in the winter. However, it won't be easy. Lots of tour providers simply don't run between November and March. The weather is often too cold and the Aegean and Ionian seas can be downright rough to boot. More than that, there's a significant drop in the number of flights connecting up the islands, so you'll be relying on pricey connections that often go via Athens, which isn't ideal. If you're determined to come in winter, we'd recommend short-haul island-hopping itineraries around the Saronic Gulf. Islands there – Hydra, Poros, Aegina – always have some life.

The first step of any island-hopping odyssey through the Greek seas is getting to Greece in the first place. Thankfully, that's pretty easy – this is one of Europe's top holiday destinations, after all. Most people will jet in on one of the many low-cost flight links that come from major hubs on the continent. However, the options are endless, what with international bus and ferry connections also on the menu…

The vast majority of people will hop on a flight to get to Greece. There are hundreds of daily connections from all over Europe and beyond to this uber-popular vacation destination during the high-season months. What's more, there are more arrival points on offer than you can shake a bowl of tzatziki at, many of which get you straight out to the islands. Some of the most popular airports to land at for island hoppers are:

• Athens International Airport Eleftherios Venizelos (in Athens) - The largest airport in Greece, and a good option for long-haul flight arrivals. A train from the terminal connects with the Athens Metro system for links to Piraeus port, which is the main hub of all inter-island ferries.
• Santorini International Airport (in Santorini) - Start your island-hopping trip in style by flying straight into Santorini, one of the most dramatic spots in the Cyclades and a must on most itineraries.
• Heraklion International Airport Nikos Kazantzakis (in Crete) - The busiest, but not the only, airport on Crete, Heraklion offers a gateway to the largest Greek island of all, where mountains and ancient Minoan sites abound. Starting here means your next leg will probably be a long boat link north to the Cyclades.
• Ioannis Kapodistrias International Airport (in Corfu) - Probably the main gateway to the western islands of the Ionian Sea, Corfu's airport is perfect for exploring places like Kefalonia, Ithaka, and Zante.

You've got two choices when it comes to planning that Greek island-hopping trip. You can either book onto a planned tour or go it alone. The first option keeps things simple. All you gotta' do is turn up, crack a Mythos beer, and settle in for the ride. The second option calls for a bit more organising, especially as you need to sort out getting from one island to the next. There are only really two options for that, though:

Greece has one of the most comprehensive ferry networks in the world. There are long-haul overnight boats that connect major destinations right down to tiny inter-island ferries that are no more than glorified fishing skiffs. Athens is very much the hub of the whole thing. Its huge – and ancient – port at Piraeus is the meeting point for most of the boats going across the Aegean Sea, as far as Rhodes and as close as Aegina. Other port towns offer steppingstones to different parts of Greece, like Igoumenitsa for the Ionian Islands and Thessaloniki for the northern Aegean.

On top of that, every individual island group usually has its own 'mini hub'. That allows for quick transfers onto smaller boats to lesser-known islands, for example from Paros (the mini hub of the Cyclades) to untrodden Koufonisia. It's always a good idea to plan island-hopping routes by looking at the map and checking the ferry links in that particular region. Picking stops along the same course means you won't have to double back on yourself and sailing legs are kept to a minimum.

It's also always wise to book tickets for Greek ferries in advance. They will sell out fast, especially on the most popular routes between the most popular islands (Santorini to Mykonos comes to mind!). Thankfully, you can now do all that online before you even jet off to the land of tzatziki and fava bean paste.

More recently, it's become possible to plan whole island-hopping trips using just flights. Obviously, this isn't ideal if you're watching your carbon output, but there is a plus side: It will let you see destinations in whole other regions that would be simply impossible to visit were you limited to boats. We're talking the white-pebble coves of Zante one day and the Turkic old towns of Rhodes the next, set more than 400 miles apart.

Not all islands can be reached by plane. In fact, only a select few have airports. They include Rhodes in the east, Crete (which has two airports, one in Chania and the other in Heraklion), Santorini, Mykonos, Naxos, Kos, Corfu, and Skiathos. Many of the flights to those will be seasonal, so don't expect an overload of choices past November time. What's more, you may need to fly via one of Greece's aviation hubs (Athens or Thessaloniki) to get from A to B.

Airlines that offer the best island-to-island flight connections in Greece include:

• Aegean Airlines – The main Greek airline. Runs all year between the islands but routes often go via Athens.
• Ryanair – A low-cost carrier that mainly specialises in flights into Greece from across Europe but does run some popular inter-island routes (ie. Santorini to Corfu).
• Olympic Air – A subsidiary of Aegean Airlines, Olympic Air now offer lots of routes to lesser-known islands, although many will go via hubs like Athens.

It's possible to hop islands in Greece for a weekend or a whole lifetime. However, between a week and 14 days is usually enough to showcase the highlights of the region and get a taste for what it means to whiz over the Aegean Sea between sunbaked bays and ouzo-soaked marina towns. That's why Med Experience focus on 9-day and 11-day itineraries for their Greek Island Hopping Tours for 18 - 39 year olds.

Our 11-day Greek island route begins in the immersive metropolis of Athens. There, you'll rub lines from the bucket list with glimpses of the Parthenon and a walking tour through the historic confines of Monastiraki Square. Day two is when the islands come into play with an arrival by ferry into Santorini, which greets you with its soaring cliffs and stunning villages that look like wisps of smoke overhead. Sunset viewing and gyros eating will ensue before the hop to Ios. That's where the island-hopping trip gets pretty wild, thanks to the wealth of pumping clubs and shot bars that exist in the Cyclades's top party destination. Paros follows. It's the perfect place to soothe the hangover, especially as we do a boat trip out to uber-remote Antiparos to seek deserted swimming coves. Then you head to Mykonos, to party on famous Paradise Beach before the return to Athens.

Our 9-day itinerary takes in the highlights of the Cyclades islands. Santorini kicks things off in grand style. There are loads of domestic flights and ferries heading there, but also plenty of low-cost carriers coming in from all over Europe. No matter how you arrive, the island is sure to wow with its vertical cliffs and carved volcanic center. This is where you'll meet your fellow travelers and explore the cobbled lanes of charming Fira Town. Then it's onto Ios, an island famed for its raucous nightlife, followed by Paros, where there's time to slow down, snorkel, and devour traditional Greek food on the promenade. The finale of the trip is over on Mykonos. It's an epic place where the good vibes roll, and you'll be staying on Paradise Beach, which is known for its pumping parties and clear seas.

Ah, the Cyclades. These are probably the most famous set of Greek isles out there. Scattered through the very middle of the Aegean Sea, they are known for their strange volcanic makeup. You get the uber-dramatic likes of Santorini here, where deluxe cave hotels peer over the cliffs. But you also get lesser-known gems like Milos, a land of carved white stone and crystal-clear snorkelling waters. Mykonos and Ios bring up the party side of things, while Naxos and Paxos are there for families. The variety makes it a top region for island hopping; one of the best of all.

Choose to stay in shared dorms with no more than five other like-minded travellers. Dorm accommodation is in the form of single/bunk beds and features shared bathroom facilities.

If you’d prefer a little more privacy when you travel, you’re able to book a private, twin-shared room. Private Rooms are slightly more spacious than shared dorms and feature a private bathroom.

Athens has an international airport that many low cost European and International carriers service. Flights are not included in the Greek Island Hopping Tour.

The tour officially starts at 3.30pm with the Welcome Meeting at Selina Theatrou Athens on the first day. You can check-in to the hotel any time during this day. Just have in mind that your room might not be ready until after 3pm. The tour ends back at the Selina Theatrou Athens where you spend the last night of the tour which will finish when you check-out of the hotel at 11.00am the following day. Due to the possibility of delays to the ferry, we strongly recommend against booking onward travel on the night you return to Athens (day 10 of the tour).

The tour officially starts at 4:30pm with the Welcome Meeting at Grande Murano Hotel on the first day. You can check-in to your accommodation at any time during this day. Just have in mind that your room might be ready after 2pm. The tour ends at check out from Paradise Beach Club (Mykonos) at 10.00am.

A basic continental breakfast is included every morning with your Greek Island Hopping tour. Lunch, dinner and snacks are not included, as this is another way we save on costs by allowing you to spend as much as you like on food and drinks, and try authentic local cuisine. Your friendly tour manager will of course recommend places to eat and drink!

Shared, dorm-style accommodation is a standard inclusion on our tours, which sees up to 5 people of mixed genders sharing a dorm. Due to capacity restrictions, accommodation partners may occasionally allocate Private Twin Rooms to guests that have booked shared accommodation, however, this is not guaranteed and is out of Med Experience’s control.

For guests who would prefer the privacy of a private room, there is the option of upgrading to a Private Twin Room for an additional cost. Private Twin Rooms are available for 2 guests booking a twin-shared room. The tours are designed for 18-39 year old travellers, so a mixture of this age range will be on the tour with you. We find that most of our clients are a mix of couples, groups and solo travellers. All travellers must be 18 years of age when the tour commences.

We book the most convenient ferries as close to departure as possible to ensure you are getting the best available ferry, and to take into consideration any foreseeable strikes or disruptions! Using a combination of ferries and high speed catamarans, we select the best ferries to match the check-in time at your accommodation, ensuring you have more time to explore each destination. Once at your destination we arrange all transfers between the ports and accommodation.

The length of the ferry will vary depending on availability and the destination, ranging from 1 - 7 hours. We recommend bringing a good book or utilising the onboard wi-fi on some of the longer journeys.

If you’re joining us on an 11 day tour, you will arrive at Athens International Airport. From Athens International Airport, you can take the Blue line Metro directly to Monastiraki station. Selina Hotel is located a 7 minute walk from Monastiraki Station.

If you’re joining us on a 9 day day tour, you will start your tour in Santorini. If you are arriving by ferry, there are taxis which will take you to Grande Murano Hotel when you arrive in port. To get to your accommodation from Thira Airport, the cheapest way is to travel by bus to Fira Town and then walk for approximately 8 minutes.

Our Greek island Hopping Tour is not a cruise, you travel between the islands via public ferries and stay in hostels or small hotels on each island and on the mainland.

We recommend a starting budget of €60 per person, per day to cover meals. If you would like to participate in additional excursions, or party in the evenings, we would suggest allowing additional budget. Greece uses the Euro and is a part of the European Union as well as the Schengen region. There are plenty of ATM’s in Greece to get cash out as well as exchange offices.

While transfers between the ferry port and accommodation are included, it's important to note that some of our hotels and hostels are located in picturesque locations by the beach and require local transfers to get to the main town. If you wish you explore the town or take part in an orientation walk, please be prepared to cover the cost of local transport (maximum amount €5).

Yes- despite our busy schedule, you'll have time to explore local culture, take a stroll, or get up to whatever you desire to make the most out of your experience. Your tour guide will advise you each day as to when free time is available.

Due to the Covit19 pandemic we were unable to visit Russia nor attend the ballet. Two tickets were purchased for US$465.50. U Visit Russia was advised of not being able to attend and agreed to pay a full refund but there would be a delay due to the number of cancellations. After some time no refund was forthcoming and U Visit Russia was again contacted by email and we were advised that due to the volume of cancellations the refund would be credited to our credit card within 9 weeks. Nothing and again they were contacted by email but no response was ever received. No refund was ever received. Nothing!! The lesson is to beware of ever dealing with this company. I had pleasure to work with Maria Nerkrasova who arranged for our group of 14 Americans to visit Sergiev Posad (u must visit that monastery). We visited Matroshka factory where we meet lady who's family been doing matreshka art for over 50 years, we had fabulous lunch with Russian traditional non alcoholic molt drink - kvass at Trapeznaya restaurant. We had awesome driver Ilya who drove our group from Moscow to Sergiev Posad and back with smile and confidence. Our group of 14 visitors from US can't say enough good things about U Visit Russia. Great company, great and caring people to work with like Maria, Anna, and their guides. If you decide to utilize U Visit Russia when you in Moscow ask them to secure Svetlana to be your tour guide, when you in St. Petersburg ask for Victoria to be your tour guide. On Thursday we got to the theatre and everyone that worked there told us the tickets were FAKE, they’d never seen anything like these, etc etc. I had to pay the tour fee (2000 rubles) AGAIN to buy ANOTHER TICKET there. Only after the tour had finished did they actually send us the PDF files that they had claimed to send earlier (which they did not). This also happened to TWO OTHER people on the same tour, they received their PDFs from Viator at the end of the tour. What kind of seat will I have on the ferry?

You’ll find a standard seat reserved for you while you’re sailing between the mainland and islands. (Mhm, travelling just like the locals!)

Will the ferries have Wi-Fi?

Looking to disconnect from the world (and connect with your new travel pals)? Ferries are the place to be. The Wi-Fi and phone signal when sailing between islands (understandably) tends to be weak. That’s why we always recommend using an e-SIM or getting a local SIM so you can have continued connectivity. But there’s no need to worry if you don’t have one. All accommodations throughout the trip will have Wi-Fi available - so you can keep your Insta followers updated on all the fun!

Do all of the hotels have pools?

Almost every time. Most of our accommodations tend to have pool facilities. But hey, you’ve got the sparkling Aegean waters of Greece by your side. So if you wanna take a swim, you’ve got the entire sea to explore.

How many other travellers are on each trip?

Group sizes are completely dependent on where and how you choose to travel with Contiki. 

In Europe and in most of North America and New Zealand, group sizes can range between 24 – 53 awesome travellers. 

In regions like Asia, Australia, Africa and Latin America, and on some North America and New Zealand trips, our group sizes are considerably smaller – as low as 12 or up to 30 travellers max.

Detour trips offer a different type of experience and max out at 16 people led by a local host.

What’s included?

All essential trip elements have been catered to ensure a great time, with great people in great places. But you mean more specifically right?

Your accommodation, essential trip transport, and a good handful of meals are included in the cost of your Contiki trip (on most trips we offer breakfast every day, plus a hand-picked selection of authentic and tasty meals). 

To fill your days and Insta feeds we have Included Experiences, which are basically the sights and activities we think you just can’t afford to miss. Of course you also get our expert and highly trained team of Contiki staff to support throughout.

We always try to accommodate special requests such as birthdays, proposals etc. Please chat to our team and we can explore how we may support the request.

What’s not included?

Contiki social travel trips have a large degree of flexibility built into them to enable you to truly own your experience. This means that some trip elements are not included in the initial cost and may require additional budgeting. 

Flights to and from your starting and ending points are not included in the cost of your trip. These can be added on during the booking process either online or via our contact center or booked independently by you.

Each trip contains the right amount of free time for you to explore or indulge your travel desires. We offer Free Time Add-Ons, which are additional experiences that are not included in the overall price. These add ons are highlighted on the specific trip page. Your Trip Manager will highlight these to you and organise their booking on trip. Exceptions may apply where pre booking is required but this will be made known to you in your pre departure information.

A number of meal times are left open for you to explore a region and its foodie offerings in greater detail, so budgeting for your taste in non-catered meals is important. 

Travel insurance and visas are also not included in the cost of your trip, and should be booked separately.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance for this trip?

Yes! It’s a requirement of traveling with Contiki that you take out comprehensive insurance cover for cancellation, personal injury, death, medical expenses, repatriation expenses, evacuation expenses, personal liability & loss of personal property and Covid related expenses before you travel with us. It’s also super important to check that your insurance covers all of the activities you’ll be trying out, particularly any adventure activities (for all you adrenaline junkies). Can I stay in my destination a few days before/after the trip starts/ends? And can Contiki help me arrange this?

Yes and yes! You can add pre- and post-trip accommodation to your booking in one of three ways:
