1. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Head to Oklahoma's capital — nicknamed the Modern Frontier — for Western cowboy culture, working stockyards and oil wells, a surprisingly buzzy arts scene, and hotels averaging just $89.47 per night. It's an especially low price for a destination with a slew of new improvements and attractions like the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center, 70-acre Scissortail Park, streetcar lines, and more. There are also museums , including the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum , Oklahoma City National Memorial & Museum, and Oklahoma City Museum of Art, but don't miss the opportunity to attend a horse show in the Horse Show Capital of the World — many are free or priced very low.

Oklahoma City is also known for its Bricktown entertainment district, an old warehouse district that transformed into an entertainment hot spot with a scenic canal winding through it. As it undergoes further evolution, expect to see this city get hotter than ever.

2. El Paso, Texas

Don't mess with Texas , and don't ask questions when you find a city that sports average daily hotel rates of $90.95 yet is chock-full of quality attractions like the El Paso Zoo, El Paso Museum of Art, Franklin Mountains State Park, and even the Western Playland amusement park. This Mexican border town, located on the western tip of Texas, also has some deliciously authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex restaurants, so arrive hungry. The Magoffin Home State Historic Site, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, is also worth a visit, and admission costs only $7.

3. Tulsa, Oklahoma

Another Oklahoma city, another low average daily hotel rate (this time $93.75). Located on the Arkansas River, Tulsa will delight your eyes with its art deco architecture (mostly in the central Deco District) and your mind with its fascinating history and art, which is best browsed at the Philbrook Museum of Art. Be sure to pay a visit to the Tulsa Historical Society & Museum to learn about the city's history, including the 1921 Tulsa Race Massacre . And if you're driving in on old Route 66 , don't miss the Blue Whale of Catoosa, a quirky roadside wonder.

4. Little Rock, Arkansas

The capital of Arkansas, located on the Arkansas River, Little Rock offers a lot to do and see. Plus, with an average daily hotel rate of $95.93, you'll have extra room in your budget for activities and souvenirs.

While the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum, which has a replica of the Oval Office and presidential artifacts, is a top attraction, visitors should also check out the Museum of Discovery, Pinnacle Mountain State Park, Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts, and Little Rock Central High School National Historic Site, where you can learn about desegregation history. The Big Dam Bridge — ripe for wordplay jokes — is another must-visit.

5. Albuquerque, New Mexico

There's a lot to do and see in the high-desert city of Albuquerque (New Mexico's largest), and each night in a hotel will set you back $98.54 on average. Whether exploring the modern downtown area or adobe-filled Old Town , you can expect a diverse and active destination with rich Native American influence and beautiful scenery. Make sure to include Albuquerque's museums, traditional New Mexican cuisine, and Route 66 on your itinerary. Save room in your budget for a splurge: Albuquerque is the hot-air ballooning capital of the world, making it the perfect place to experience this thrilling adventure.

6. Greenville, South Carolina

Greenville 's thriving downtown area makes it a great place to visit, and the average nightly rates of $99.47 aren't too shabby, either. Ride the free trolleys, tour the town's multiple installations of public art pieces, and don't leave without strolling 36 acres of riverside gardens, waterfall views, and a suspension bridge at Falls Park on the Reedy, the " crown jewel " of downtown Greenville.

7. Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina

You'll find stays for $100.18 per night on average in the metro areas of Raleigh and Durham. Raleigh, the capital of North Carolina , is known for its universities (together with Chapel Hill and Durham, the area makes up a region called the Research Triangle), but there's also great hiking , biking, and BBQ beyond the library walls. Check out the Morgan Street Food Hall and Transfer Co. Food Hall in Raleigh and the Durham Food Hall in Durham for memorable eats from the area's culinary talents.

8. Columbia, South Carolina

Columbia is the capital of South Carolina , but its hotels linger around just $101.46 per night. Don't miss the botanical garden and animals at Riverbanks Zoo & Garden, centuries of art at the Columbia Museum of Art, and the sprawling gardens at the Robert Mills House. For fun that's totally free, walk along the canal at Riverfront Park or picnic on the shores of Lake Murray. Congaree National Park is another local favorite, and kids will get a kick out of the hands-on learning experiences at EdVenture Children's Museum.

9. Baltimore, Maryland

For being such a major city, Baltimore's average nightly hotel rates of $102.37 are amazingly low. Make sure to visit the Inner Harbor — one of the oldest seaports in America — for shopping, crab shacks, the National Aquarium , and even a Civil War-era warship. While the Baltimore Museum of Art and Walters Art Museum showcase marvels from the past centuries, the American Visionary Art Museum offers a peek into the future (and the funky). Book lovers, meanwhile, will find a literary wonderland at the George Peabody Library. With gorgeous waterfront views and lots of museums, you can spend your days in Baltimore indoors or outdoors.

10. Somerset, New Jersey

Not far from New York City , Somerset County boasts hotel rates of just $102.60 per night, a far cry from the typically steep prices found in the city. The surroundings couldn't be more different, either: Somerset County has an abundance of parks , preserves, and gardens to enjoy. Head to Snyder's Farm for fresh produce and u-pick berries during the season or Jersey Cyclone Brewing Company to sample locally brewed craft beers.

20. Gettysburg, Pennsylvania

gettysburg statue

In 1863, during the height of the American Civil War, the battle fought in Gettysburg turned the tide for Union forces and inspired Lincoln to give his iconic Gettysburg Address. For even casual U.S. history buffs, there’s no better place to visit.

Today, the battlefield where that seminal event took place is part of the expanded Gettysburg National Military Park, where you can check out artifacts in the Gettysburg Museum and Visitor Center and explore the Gettysburg National Cemetery to see the memorial that marks where Lincoln gave his history-making address. As is the case throughout Gettysburg, most park and visitor exhibits are free (though you should check with the park service for fees on your group's planned activities).

Outside the history park, you can explore the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing, Mister Ed's Elephant Museum, and Historic Round Barn and Farm Market — all for free or mere pocket change. Bus and ghost tours cost a bit more, but not so much that you'll regret the purchase.

*Note: This list comes from U.S. News and World Report's 2023-24 report .

19. Williamsburg, Virginia

Williamsburg, Virginia

Dive into the history of the U.S. in Williamsburg, which forms the Historic Triangle with Jamestown and Yorktown. Its most famous area is Colonial Williamsburg , a living-history museum that, while not particularly cheap (it’s $49 for adults), offers decent bang for the buck. In the streets, shops and workshops, you'll find actors dressed in period costumes depicting typical colonial life.

Hop on the Schooner Alliance for a few hours to get the feel of old sailing ships. You'll cruise down the York River and pass the battlefield where the country won its independence. Then head over to historic Jamestown for more living museums, exhibits and monuments.

For some modern fun, consider visiting Busch Gardens, Water Country USA or the Williamsburg Indoor Sports Center.

18. San Antonio, Texas

san antonio riverwalk

Sure, San Antonio is famous for The Alamo, but there is plenty more to see in this south-central Texas charmer. For an additional dose of history, you can hop on a rented bike and travel down the 15-mile Mission Reach Trail that highlights San Antonio's Missions, which collectively comprise a UNESCO World Heritage Site and national historic park. Visitor activities and ranger-led programs are free.

Get your nature fix on the cheap at the Japanese Tea Garden (free), San Antonio Botanical Garden ($12), Government Canyon State Natural Area ($6) or San Pedro Springs Park (free).

Then, of course, there’s the River Walk, with its waterfront cafes and shops touting Tex-Mex flair. Stop along the way for a reasonably priced margarita to sip on while you people-watch. Another great spot for margarita-sipping (or coffee-sipping) is Yanaguana Garden, an art-filled park and playground that caters to visitors of all ages.

If you’re willing to spend a bit more, SeaWorld and Six Flags are mega-parks that can keep families entertained for hours on end. Or you can take a ghost tour through this city that’s been around since 1718.

17. Flagstaff, Arizona

Flagstaff Arizona in the winter

Some small cities are cheap because there's nothing to do in them. That isn't the case for Flagstaff. This exciting destination is in the desert, but it's near mountains and pine forests, making it ideal for adventure travelers.

Most people come here for nature, as the city offers access to Walnut Canyon National Monument, Horseshoe Bend and the Grand Canyon. You can go rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, fishing and more. Plus, if you're a fan of worlds beyond ours, Flagstaff was the first official International Dark Sky City and boasts the Lowell Observatory, one of the best in the country.

When you're not relishing in the beauty of Planet Earth, you can walk through the city's pretty downtown area, which is filled with art galleries, restaurants and boutique shops.

16. Colorado Springs, Colorado

Colorado Springs, Colorado

Colorado Springs sits at the eastern foot of the Rocky Mountains and caters to outdoor enthusiasts at every turn.

Garden of the Gods is filled with towering red-rock formations, while the 12,115-foot Pikes Peak boasts Insta-worthy views from its summit. (Both can be enjoyed for free.) Visitors can also soar high above the Arkansas River in one of the highest zip lines in the country, try whitewater rafting or explore the area’s scenic beauty via train.

For indoor fun, the city touts an excellent craft-beer scene that’s budget-friendly to boot.

15. Santa Fe, New Mexico

Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA

Because of its history, Santa Fe combines elements of Indigenous, Spanish, Mexican and American culture. This makes it one of the country's most exciting cities. Visit the historic center, originally built in the early 17th century, where you'll find the New Mexico History Museum housed inside the Palace of the Governors. Then, go to the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum or catch a show at the Santa Fe Opera.

You should also visit the Bandelier National Monument, where you'll find ancient dwellings and artifacts of the Pueblo People. Or plan an outdoor excursion to the Sangre de Cristo foothills.

Of course, the best thing about this wonderful city is that it's relatively cheap.

14. Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Gatlinburg is most famous for its access to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. At the most popular national park in the country , visitors can hike to waterfalls, test out the Appalachian Trail or watch for black bears. The fee to enter the park? Absolutely nothing.

But it’d be a mistake to spend all your time at Great Smoky without sampling Gatlinburg itself. At this charming small town, you can sip on authentic Gatlinburg moonshine, craft beers and ciders, or local wines; dance to live country music at Ole Red Gatlinburg; or catch a rollicking musical comedy show at Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre & Music Hall.

13. Nags Head, North Carolina

Beach in Nags Head, North Carolina

If you need a deeply relaxing but affordable beach vacation, head to Nags Head on North Carolina's Outer Banks. If napping in the sun while the sound of waves lulls you to sleep sounds too slow, don't fret. Nags Head has plenty of activities for adventurers, too, including paddleboarding, parasailing and hang gliding.

Walk, hike and run the trails at Jockey's Ridge State Park, which covers 426 acres and has the tallest active sand dune system in the eastern United States. The circa-1872 Bodie Island Lighthouse is a beauty, while Jennette's Pier stretches 1,000 feet over the Atlantic Ocean and is filled with charming mom-and-pop shops.

12. Finger Lakes, New York

finger lakes

The Finger Lakes region includes eleven lakes in Central New York. Water sports, fishing and boating are natural options for vacation activities. But visitors can also spend their vacation sipping beverages at 35 wineries, cideries and breweries along the Seneca Lake Wine Trail. Most have just a minimal fee ($2-5) that’s waived with the purchase of a bottle.

Use the money you’ve saved to gain a new perspective on the area by booking a motorless glider plane on Harris Hill. A tow plane will take you 4,000 feet up before you glide above the Chemung Valley.

State parks local to the Finger Lakes include Taughannock Falls and Watkins Glen, which touts an impressive 19 waterfalls.

11. Asheville, North Carolina

Asheville Skyline - North Carolina

Lovely, lovely Asheville is a mountain city with art galleries, cultural events and more microbreweries than you could visit. Its proximity to the Blue Ridge Mountains makes it particularly popular with hikers, who can easily explore trails, waterfalls and peaks for free.

Another wonderful activity that doesn't require money is walking around the River Arts District. Here, you'll find numerous workshops and studios that local artists often open to the public. At night, look for a bar or a pub with live music.

10. Grand Canyon, Arizona

Grand Canyon, Arizona

President Theodore Roosevelt, who declared the Grand Canyon a national monument in 1908, once said, "In the Grand Canyon, Arizona has a natural wonder which, so far as I know, is in kind absolutely unparalleled throughout the rest of the world.”

Over a century later, his words very much still ring true.

This natural wonder stuns with its layers of red rocks, shaped over millennia, and sheer scale — it’s 277 river miles long, up to 18 miles wide and a mile deep.

For another perspective, you can visit the canyon’s depths on a donkey or soar above it on a helicopter. Want to watch for animals? Easy. More than 500 species of wildlife roam here.

It’s just $35 per vehicle to explore this sight known and revered the world over.

9. St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine, Florida

St. Augustine is one of the oldest cities in the United States, dating all the way back to 1565. Tons of free attractions highlight the historical backdrop of the town, including Fort Matanzas National Monument, home to a circa-1740 Spanish fort; Mission Nombre de Dios, where Spanish settlers established the first Shrine to the Blessed Virgin Mary in the U.S. in the early 1600s; and the Father Miguel O'Reilly House Museum, one of the oldest buildings in the country, built in 1691.

History isn't the only aspect of St. Augustine that draws in visitors, though. With more than 42 miles of beach, the city offers an ideal place to unwind while enjoying Florida’s famous sunny climes.

There are also several free art experiences, including the Crisp-Ellert Art Museum at Flagler College and the First Friday Art Walk, where art galleries offer walking tours. From November to February, St. Augustine decorates the Old City area with thousands of holiday lights for the annual Nights of Lights event. Again, it’s totally free.

Oh, and don’t miss the wine tastings at San Sebastian Winery or libations at St. Augustine Distillery, which sits inside a century-old ice house!

8. Destin, Florida

Fishing Boat In Destin, Florida

Although South Florida beaches often get the most attention, the state's Panhandle has nothing to envy them. Hugging the Gulf of Mexico, Destin is closer to Georgia and Alabama, making it easier to access for those wanting to arrive by car. The city has picture-perfect beaches with soft, white sand and clear water without the noise and crowds of places like Miami.

Of course, watersports are the main thing to do here. You can go boating, jet skiing, kayaking, diving, parasailing and more. Outside the water, you can visit wild dunes at the Topsail Hill Preserve State Park or go golfing in one of the city's courses.

7. Olympic National Park, Washington

Olympic National Park, Washington

In western Washington, Olympic National Park isn’t particularly easy to access — but its remoteness is also its greatest selling point.

From Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, you'll drive at least two hours before being rewarded with views of staggering mountain ranges, the state's famous Evergreen trees and various bodies of water (rivers, lakes, ocean — they’re all here). You also have the option to take your rental car on a ferry to cross the Puget Sound for even more breathtaking views.

Once you're at the park, there are countless things to do, from fishing to boating to visiting tidepools. Hikers have myriad trails to choose from, while serious backpackers can plan overnight adventures. Due to its vast size and distance from city life, the park offers many night-sky programs as well.

One of the most popular attractions is the Hoh Rain Forest, which sits inside the park. One of the largest temperate rainforests in the United States, it offers guests a lush, green canopy of plants and is home to the quietest spot in the continental U.S. , making it an ideal place for a digital detox. The park entrance fee? A mere $30 per vehicle.

6. Bar Harbor, Maine

Bar Harbor, Maine, Autumn morning

While Bar Harbor isn't the cheapest place on this list, prices are pretty good for what the town offers. Most people come to the town (which only has 5,535 people) for the astonishing Acadia National Park. For a mere $35 per car, you can have access to scenic coastal hikes, pristine lakes hidden in the mountains and rock-climbing spots.

Back in town, you'll be happy to walk around the colorful downtown area, enjoying the smell of the sea while taking in harbor views. And if you have a bit of money to splurge, buy some fresh Maine lobster or go on a boat tour. In the right season, you'll be able to go whale watching right outside the town.

5. Sequoia National Park, California

Sequoia National Park, California

If you're coming from out of state, the closest airport to Sequoia National Park is a 90-minute drive away at the Fresno Yosemite International Airport. Once you reach the park, you'll notice what it is most famous for: giant sequoias. The biggest tree here — the General Sherman Tree, standing 275 feet tall with a base over 36 feet in diameter — is the largest in the world.

The park’s views of the southern Sierra Nevada mountains are spectacular, as are the steams and unique rock patterns you’ll find underground at Crystal Cave. Oh, and the park is also home to hundreds of black bears, making it likely that you’ll see at least a few during your time here (just remember to keep your distance!).

All this for $20 per individual and $35 per private vehicle. And this fee gains you access for seven days to Sequoia and the nearby, also stunning Kings Canyon National Park.

4. Cannon Beach, Oregon

Haystack Rock and the Needles at Cannon Beach on the Oregon Coast USA Sunset

Cannon Beach is one of the most iconic beaches in the U.S. And it's completely free to visit. With giant rocks rising from the sea, the beach is extremely popular. Luckily, there are about 44 access points, so plan to enter from a less frequented area.

The beach's eponymous town only has 1,547, so there are limited dining and accommodation options. Luckily, prices are reasonable. And if you find that they're a bit much for your pocket, you can always stay in a nearby town and then drive to the beach to enjoy a spectacular sunset.

3. Glacier National Park, Montana

Glacier National Park, Montana

With nearly 1,600 square miles of wilderness, Glacier is a dream for hikers, bikers, climbers, wildlife watchers and photographers alike.

One fan favorite is the photogenic Hidden Lake, named for its tucked-away setting amid towering peaks and accessible via a scenic trail that, every spring, blooms with wildflowers. Also beloved is Going-To-The-Sun Road, which passes glaciers, glacial lakes, waterfalls, mountains, cedar forests and wildflowers as it winds its way across the park for 50 glorious miles.

If you'd like to experience the great outdoors with a bit of help, consider taking a guided tour by boat or a ranger-led hike. Don’t want to spend the extra money? Pay $25 per vehicle in the winter or $35 in the summer to explore on your own.

2. Moab, Utah

Mountain Biking In Canyonlands National Park, Moab, Utah

Surprisingly, Moab is affordable despite providing access to both Canyonlands and Arches national parks. At both of these incredible places, you'll see desert landscapes almost too beautiful to be real. In Arches, walk around a red desert filled with natural stone formations, many of which are, of course, arches. Stay the night for one of the most incredible stargazing experiences of your life.

Besides these famous spots, there are smaller state parks, like Dead Horse Point State Park, which have a low admission price and are less crowded. In town, you can visit the Moab Museum of Film and Western Heritage to learn about the area's long relationship with TV and film.

1. Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

Oxbow Bend, Grand Teton

Located right next to Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton continues to be sorely underrated. But let the mistake of other people become an opportunity to explore this vast and gorgeous land without noise and large crowds. Entrance is only $35 per vehicle, so pack up your car with good friends and come prepared to hike the Teton Mountains and look for packs of wild bison.

While several nearby towns, like Jackson, can be very expensive, look to stay in lesser-known or smaller towns. This will prove to be a much cheaper way to enjoy the park.

Honorable Mention: Albuquerque, New Mexico

albuquerque budget-friendly vacation

New Mexico's largest city has historic and modern offerings for guests, and none of them will break the bank. While Old Town Albuquerque dates back to 1706 and includes adobe structures, museums and shops selling handcrafted goods from indigenous groups, downtown Albuquerque offers up hip shops and restaurants catering to a contemporary clientele.

The Sandia Peak Tramway offers stunning views of the city and the Sandia Mountains. Don’t want to pony up the $25 for a round trip? Walk or bike the 16 miles of the Paseo del Bosque Trail that traces the Rio Grande River.

For a unique experience, visit the American International Rattlesnake Museum (yes, that’s right, a museum dedicated to rattlesnakes). Or travel to Albuquerque in October to participate in the iconic Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

Honorable Mention: Portland, Oregon

Portland, Oregon

“Keep Portland weird” isn't just a catchy motto; it’s a call to action for travelers seeking an extraordinary vacation that’s also surprisingly affordable.

At Forest Park, spooky ruins dating back to the 1930s play host to hikers and nighttime partiers. In the heart of the city, Mill Ends Park is billed as the smallest park in the world (it’s two square feet!). And in the Mississippi neighborhood, houses-turned-quirky bars serve up reasonably priced local brews.

Portland can also cater to more conventional interests, like browsing books (at the massive Powell's Books), gorging on donuts (Is Blue Star or Voodoo better? You decide), smelling flowers (at the gorgeous downtown rose garden) and sampling ice cream (at the nationally renowned Salt & Straw).

Plus, Portland is home to and near countless gorgeous nature spots that are free to visit, including Multnomah Falls, Horsetail Falls and the Oneonta Gorge.

Honorable Mention: Athens, Georgia

Downtown of Athens, Georgia, USA

Of course, to get to Athens by plane, you'll probably want to fly into Atlanta, about an hour's drive from this college town . Home to the University of Georgia, you'll see Bulldogs fans everywhere you visit.

Because students are the primary residents, you'll also find a variety of free attractions, including the Georgia Museum of Art and State Botanical Garden of Georgia. You can also explore historic homes and gorgeous parks that won't cost you a penny.

Honorable Mention: Anchorage, Alaska

Anchorage, Alaska

If you're looking for wild beauty on your next vacation, Alaska's largest city has it in spades. It costs a bit more to access this remote destination than other cities on this list, but once you’re here, you’ll find it’s very easy on the wallet.

The city sits on the Cook Inlet and offers access to nearby mountains like Chugach and Talkeetna, where the hiking trails are beautiful, bountiful and free to access. Also free here? The fascinating Alaska Native Heritage Center, open-air Anchorage Market and unique Alaska Trooper Museum, where you can learn about how law enforcement operates in this remote corner of the world.

The coolest thing you can do is view the Northern Lights, often visible from the middle of August through April. There are countless tour options for visitors, depending on your goals, and they’re pretty much all worth the relative splurge.

Embrace winter in Anchorage, and you'll have endless activities, including flightseeing, dog sledding, snowmobiling, ice skating, skiing, fat tire biking and ice fishing. And lest you think this rugged city lacks culture, it’s also home to a surprisingly good symphony and opera company.

Honorable Mention: Memphis, Tennessee

Memphis, Tennessee

Music is the main attraction in Memphis, a city that helped birth American blues, soul and rock 'n' roll. Between the Blues Hall of Fame, Stax Museum of American Soul Music and Elvis Presley's Graceland mansion, you'll never get bored by day. By night, Beale Street’s live-music venues keep the good times rolling until the early morning hours.

There are also countless ways to explore (for free) the great outdoors in Memphis, famously home to the mighty Mississippi River. Hike, bike or take a four-wheeler on the Big River Crossing for excellent views of the river. At Shelby Farms Park, you'll likely see some buffalo, while the BMX track caters to those with a need for speed. Explore the 342 acres that make up Overton Park and take a brewery tour before you head home.

Oh, and one more thing: The barbecue here is amazing (some will argue the best in the country) and blessedly not overpriced.

Honorable Mention: Tucson, Arizona

Tucson, Arizona

Arizona is chock-full of cheap cities to add to the bucket list, including this sunny mid-size metropolis that’s too often overlooked.

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is a massive space that includes an aquarium, botanical garden, zoo, art gallery and natural history museum. Outdoor enthusiasts can get some hiking in at the Sabino Canyon in the Santa Catalina Mountains, or meander through the Saguaro National Park, home to sections of the Rincon Mountains, Tucson Mountains and Sonoran Desert.

For something totally different, Biosphere 2 at The University of Arizona is the world's largest living research center, where scientists focus on global challenges surrounding food, water, health and energy.

Cinephiles can nerd out by visiting a movie set at Old Tucson Studios, where Westerns like “El Dorado” and “Gunfight at the O.K. Corral” were filmed, as was the “Little House on the Prairie” TV series.

No matter how you fill your itinerary, make sure to end your trip with a picturesque (and free) drive on the Mount Lemmon Scenic Byway. The canyon and mountain views can’t be beat.

Honorable Mention: Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Head to South Carolina's Atlantic coast, and you'll find Myrtle Beach and its 60 miles of beaches. The city offers countless ways to enjoy the water, including scuba diving, surfboard rentals, Hobie Cat sailboats rentals, charter boat cruises and guided tours of the blackwater and salt marsh ecosystems.

Myrtle Beach is also known for its celebrity-designed golf courses. With more than 100 courses, every level of player is welcome, and many are quite affordable.

If you have little ones in tow — or just want to embrace your inner child — head to the boardwalk for arcades, restaurants, shopping and one of the country's tallest Ferris wheels (at 187 feet!).

Up for learning some new dance moves? Make your way to Main Street in North Myrtle Beach. Here, you'll find several clubs that specialize in South Carolina's state dance, the shag, a partner dance set to beach tunes.

Honorable Mention: Salt Lake City, Utah

Salt Lake City, Utah

The capital and most populated city in Utah also happens to be extremely affordable. Salt Lake City has a variety of free activities, including the Family History Library, the world’s largest genealogical library (cool!), and Temple Square, which hosts lively concerts and block parties at no charge.

Are you an outdoor enthusiast? Red Butte Garden has more than 21 acres of gardens and five miles of walking and hiking trails. If you want to get on the water, head to the Great Salt Lake Marina, which is only slightly less salty than the Dead Sea. You can paddleboard, kayak, sail and take dinner cruises on the lake. And then there’s the Bonneville Salt Flats, a strikingly unusual landscape that’s served as the setting for countless movies and car commercials.

Since you’ve saved so much money, you can hopefully afford the splurge of Utah Olympic Park to experience zip lining, rock climbing, ski jumping, tubing, ropes courses, luge and bobsledding...no experience required.

Honorable Mention: Branson, Missouri

Branson, Missouri

This Ozarks town is best known for being a fun-filled family-travel destination, replete with kid museums, themed amusement parks, mini golf, fudgeries and a plethora of (clean) live shows. Plus, you can bring the brood without worrying about how it will affect the family finances.

For nature lovers, there are tons of free parks to explore, including Branson State Park and Table Rock State Park. Head to the Lakeside Wilderness Area for miles of hiking with a waterfall and cave, or check out the Moonshine Beach if a day in the sun is in order.

Branson's landmarks can be accessed via a free downtown trolley. Some local wineries and distilleries offer free tours and/or tastings, and you can learn a bit about the town's history at the Branson Centennial Museum — also scot-free.

The Strip, aka Highway 76, aka 76 Country Music Boulevard, is famous for its many theaters and entertainment venues, including Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede Dinner Attraction and Silver Dollar City, both super-affordable and a guaranteed good time.

Wondering how to travel on a budget? While it may seem like traveling is exclusive to those with cash to spare, you don’t have to overspend in order to get out of town. There are plenty of ways to travel on a budget — including using reward points or miles and traveling during ideal times— that can end up saving you a lot of money. Here's travel guide for beginners on a budget.

Start planning early

If this is your first big trip, odds are you’ve already started planning. That’s good — the sooner you start, the more time you have to save money . Travel prices rise and fall with demand, and the cycle fluctuates as your travel dates get closer.

Beginning your planning early gives you the best chance of finding discounted hotel rooms, cheaper flights and other less-expensive activities. Although you won’t find the cheapest prices far out in advance (as we mentioned, it’s a cycle) keeping an eye on rates will allow you to jump on them and book when they drop.

Book at the right time

This bears repeating. Why? Because when you book and when you travel can make a huge difference in the price of your vacation. This applies to flights and hotels.

Confused about when the "right time" to book will be? There are multiple free tools available online to help you.

One of the easiest to use is the price tracking tool available via Google Flights. This service lets you know how the fare you’re looking at purchasing compares with past pricing. It also lets you know if rates are high or low compared with average costs.

If the flight you’re considering does appear to be expensive, Google Flights also features a price tracker alert system that will email you when fares drop. You can toggle this feature on within the search bar.

According to Expedia, the best day of the week to buy your airline ticket is on Sunday.

Skip overpriced tours

There’s nothing like getting out into a new city to explore. But how much of that exploring can you do on your own? With the information available online, it’s simple and easy to conduct your own tour for free rather than paying for a guide.

If this doesn’t sound appealing to you, consider instead one of the many free tours that many major cities offer. These walking tours will give you tons of information about the area completely free of charge, though gratuities are welcomed.

Otherwise, apps such as Spotted By Locals , Tripadvisor and Rick Steves offer comprehensive information for many large cities. Often this is free, but sometimes you’ll need to pay a nominal fee.

Use reward points

One of our favorite ways to save money includes redeeming reward points for travel. Some of your biggest expenses, such as hotels and flights, can be wiped away by using reward points during your trip.

This type of travel takes planning; you’ll need to accrue enough points to make a travel redemption. Much of the time, this is accomplished through welcome bonuses earned when you open a travel credit card .

For example, a round-trip flight from Los Angeles to Paris costs $1,255 at the beginning of November 2022.

low budget trip near me

This same flight can be booked using 45,000 American Airlines miles .

low budget trip near me

While 45,000 miles may seem like a lot, you can earn this amount of miles with ease. For example, you can earn more than enough miles needed for this flight with the AAdvantage® Aviator® Red World Elite Mastercard® welcome bonus: Earn 50,000 AAdvantage® bonus miles after making your first purchase and paying the $99 annual fee in full, both within the first 90 days. The first purchase could be a stick of gum or a cup of coffee — it doesn’t matter.

Many co-branded airline credit cards also offer perks like free checked bags and priority boarding, saving you time and money.

The same can be said of hotel credit cards . Most major hotel chains have co-branded credit cards, including Hilton , Marriott , IHG , Hyatt , Choice and Wyndham . These credit cards — and their sign-up bonuses — can go a long way toward cutting costs on your vacation.

Even better, many of these credit cards offer complimentary elite status . Elite status can grant you perks such as free breakfast, room upgrades, free WiFi and late checkout.

It’s a good idea to consider booking hotel rooms using points, especially for budget family travel. Sometimes hotels charge more for additional people in your room, but these costs won’t translate to reward redemptions. You’ll generally pay the same standard price as long as you can all safely occupy the room.

Travel in the off-season

Along with using reward points, taking your trip during the offseason is another excellent way to save money. Each destination has a peak period of demand during which prices will be inflated.

This will include flights, hotels, tours and even dining, making traveling on a budget difficult. In Europe, the high season is in the summer, when most people come to visit.

During this time, flights will be at their most expensive. Remember the above example featuring that flight to Paris for $1,255? A similar flight during peak season will cost $2,070 round trip.

As you can see, even if you’re paying cash for your flights you’ll be saving over $800 by taking your trip when demand is lower.

If you want to travel on a budget

Vacations don’t have to be expensive. Whether you’re a vacation veteran or a travel newbie, it’s easy to save on trips by starting planning early and keeping an eye on prices.

More importantly, taking advantage of reward points can significantly cut down on flight and hotel costs. Otherwise, traveling during the offseason can help drop expenses and allow you to travel on a budget.

10 Best Places to Travel on a Budget

An ancient Buddha statue with a sash at a historic site in sunny Thailand

The world is full of cheap vacation spots. No matter what continent — and no matter what interests you have — there are countless places you can visit on a budget.

Few destinations are “too expensive” as long as you do some research, get creative, and have some flexibility. You just might not be living large when you visit them.

Fortunately, there are lots of destinations out there that make budget travel easy, fun, and safe.

These destinations offer affordable accommodation, cheap food, and plenty of activities and excursions that can be enjoyed without breaking the bank.

Here’s my list of the best cheap travel destinations so you can get inspired and plan your next affordable adventure!

Table of Contents

1. Thailand

2. central america, 3. cambodia, 4. the balkans, 8. portugal, 10. morocco.

It’s also super affordable.

With a tourist trail going back decades, Thailand is the heart of backpacking in Southeast Asia , and you can get by on between $25-35 USD per day thanks to cheap guesthouses, budget street food (which can be found for as little as $1 USD!), local buses, and the many cheap and free attractions. If you spend all your time on the islands and in expensive accommodation, expect to pay closer to $60 USD per day. However, even at the price, Thailand is still one of the most bargain-friendly destinations in the world and should not be skipped!

Belize , Panama , Costa Rica — these are expensive destinations by regional standards (yet they are still quite affordable). If you visit these central Central American countries, you can get by on $45-60 USD per day as a backpacker or splash out and spend $100-120 a day to live large. Your money goes really far in this part of the world. And with so many countries to choose from, it’s easy to bounce around and see a lot without going broke.

Ancient Buddhist relics at a historic site in beautiful Cambodia

Cambodia is cheaper than popular Thailand but just as beautiful and filled with some of the nicest people in the world. Plus, it’s home to the incredible Angkor Wat (which, while expensive to visit, is worth the expense!).

You can get by for as little as $45 USD per day — a fraction of what you’d pay in Western Europe. A week’s worth of groceries costs as little as $25 USD while a beer costs around $2-5 USD.

And while the region was once known for being unsafe, things have greatly improved over the past decade. There’s a growing backpacking trail here and tourism is on the rise. It’s Europe least-explored region — but not for long so visit before you crowds arrive and the price skyrocket.

The bustling capital of Georgia, Tbilisi, on a bright and sunny day

Tucked away in the Caucasus, Georgia has been at a cultural crossroads for centuries yet it’s not nearly as popular as it should be. Tbilisi is a city bursting with activity, while the rest of the country offers intrepid adventures a rugged, off-the-beaten-path feel.

You can get by on next to nothing here too, with budget travelers spending as little as $30 USD per day. Beer is around $3 USD, a week’s worth of groceries costs around $25-30 USD, and most museums and historic sites cost just $2-5 USD.

While it might feel out of the way, Georgia is one of the next big backpacking hubs. I’d go back in a heartbeat!

A narrow street with bright colors and an old tram going up the hill in Lisbon, Portugal

Portugal has become a lot more popular and crowded in recent years (it has a growing expat and digital nomad scene) and Lisbon has become especially expensive was people move there and drive up prices. It’s a great place after all! However, once you get outside of Lisbon, prices are still relatively cheap compared to the rest of Western Europe — and you’ll see far fewer tourists too. Expect to get by on $50-60 USD per day if you’re a budget backpacker.

While is gorgeous in the summer, if you’re looking for a cheap place to spend the winter in Europe, Portugal is one of your best options.

Which day of the week is the best day to buy cheap airline tickets?

When is the best time to buy airline tickets?

Based on 2020 And 2021 global flight data for Economy tickets, prices usually start to increase 56 days before departure for domestic flights. When traveling internationally, prices usually start to increase 21 days before departure*. Additionally, travelers may alter their search for round-trip flights, one-way flights, and multicity flights.

What should I look out for when booking flights?

Several factors go into any flight booking, and you’ll need to keep an eye out for them all to ensure that you get the travel time, luggage policy, airline, and class you want. Consider which airport is closest to your ultimate destination (travelers to Los Angeles may prefer flights to LAX over flights to PSP , and make sure that the flight will accommodate all the luggage you plan on bringing. Additionally, consider the different flight classes including economy flights for functionality and premium flights if you want to enjoy a more relaxing experience.

Where’s the cheapest place to travel?

The cheapest place to travel can be in the same country, like Chicago. Flights to Chicago are fairly affordable no matter where you’re coming from in the continental United States. Flights to Las Vegas tend to be pretty affordable as well. While the Vegas airport isn’t a hub for any major airline, it does have plenty of competition to keep prices relatively low.

Where can I fly for cheap?

Staying within a strict budget still allows you to find plenty of cheap flights, even to destinations like Puerto Rico. In fact, flights to Puerto Rico don’t even require U.S. citizens to have a passport. Flights to Alberta and other destinations in Canada can be fairly affordable as well.

Is it cheaper to buy flights last minute?

Flight tickets can be cheaper at the last minute depending on how late you’re actually booking, where you’re going, and the kind of flight you opt for. For domestic flights with Economy tickets, prices usually start to increase 3 weeks before departure, and 4 weeks for international flights, according to historical data*.

Are fully refundable flights available?

Yes, several fully refundable flights are available and will be labeled as such right on your search results page in green text. You may also filter for fully refundable flights specifically to eliminate all flights from your results that don’t qualify. Just make sure to check the specific policy for each flight before booking.

11 top affordable all-inclusive resorts for 2024.

A stress-free getaway awaits at these affordable all-in-one properties.

Top Affordable All-Inclusive Resorts

All-inclusive resorts promise a simplified vacation: One upfront fee covers food, drinks and select activities, so you can relax with a cocktail in hand instead of worrying about your spending. However, not every all-inclusive accommodation option offers the same budget-conscious bang for your buck; some end up costing much more than you may be hoping to pay thanks to extra fees for amenities like kids clubs or meals at specialty restaurants.

These U.S. News picks for affordable resorts are properties where two guests can stay in one room for around $250 per night or less. These prices may not be available year-round: You may need to settle for off-peak travel periods or reserve well in advance for peak seasons (usually December to April for warm destinations). Round-trip flights are not factored into these prices, but some resorts may offer packages that include air travel.

Whether you're dreaming of a family-friendly beach trip or an adults-only escape, these reasonably priced all-inclusive resorts across the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America ensure a memorable travel experience that won't break the bank.

Tips on Trips and Expert Picks

Travel tips, vacation ideas and more to make your next vacation stellar.

El Cozumeleño Beach Resort: Cozumel, Mexico

Package deals: Romance packages are available, as are hotel and flight combination deals.

If you're hoping to head to the white sands of Cozumel , a popular island just off the coast of Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula, El Cozumeleño Beach Resort is one of the cheapest all-inclusive choices. Choose between rooms facing the garden or ocean (typically more expensive), all of which are fitted with balconies.

Rates include free diving lessons in the pool and snorkel equipment rentals, plus other activities like kayaking, tennis and dance classes. Otherwise, spend your days lounging by your choice of five pools (including one indoor option), two hot tubs and a private beach. Dining venues include the upscale Veranda restaurant, the casual Cocal eatery and an assortment of bars. Recent guests describe El Cozumeleño as a great place to relax, with particularly friendly staff. Per-night costs can dip as low as $130 per room and typically don't rise above $200 per night.

Paradise Village Nuevo Vallarta: Mexico

Starting rate: From $155 per night

Package deals: Travelers can choose between the all-inclusive plan, a breakfast buffet plan, a golf package or specials determined by the length of their stays. A "Kids Stay Free" deal for children ages 2 to 12 may also be available in combination with these packages. On top of that, guests can save time and money by booking their hotel rooms and air travel together.

For an affordable option within reach of Puerto Vallarta , consider Paradise Village Nuevo Vallarta, located just under 10 miles northwest of the center of the popular resort city. The hotel's all-inclusive plan encompasses unlimited food and beverages, gratuities, nonmotorized water sports, Wi-Fi access and more.

You'll enjoy access to two lagoon-style pools with slides, hot tubs and waterfalls – plus another lap pool for workouts and a kids area. Meanwhile, palapas and chairs are available at the beach, and guests will have a long list of sporty activities to choose from, including bocce and kayaking.

Restaurant options include Mexican fare, Italian dishes and sushi, plus the Copan Sunset Sky Bar for drinks with a view. Recent visitors say that Paradise Village is a good bet for family vacations, thanks to the plentiful activities at the property.

Hotel Riu Playa Blanca: Río Hato, Panama

Pools at Hotel Riu Playa Blanca.

Courtesy of Riu Hotels & Resorts

Package deals: Hotel Riu Playa Blanca lists a variety of "best offers" on its website for select dates throughout the year.

If you'd like to look beyond classic all-inclusive destinations like the Dominican Republic or Mexico, consider Hotel Riu Playa Blanca, located about 80 miles southwest of Panama City, Panama. This modern property, opened in 2014, features a red-and-white color scheme and a sleeker design than your average all-inclusive. Accommodations all come with free Wi-Fi access, a minibar, and a balcony or terrace.

This resort is a good place for a relaxed trip; you'll have access to three main pools (plus another for kids) and the shores of Playa Blanca along the Pacific. Daytime activities include volleyball and a kids club, while live music and dance venues rule the night. In addition to activities and entertainment, the all-inclusive fares cover all meals, snacks and beverages. Dining options include a buffet, an Asian restaurant and a steakhouse, among other options. Past visitors note that the resort is ultra-clean and boasts friendly staff.

Fiesta Resort All Inclusive Central Pacific: Puntarenas, Costa Rica

Package deals: Fiesta Resort offers discounts throughout the year based on the length of your stay.

This all-inclusive resort sits about 55 miles west of Costa Rica's capital city, San Jose, and has the unusual feature of a volcanic black sand beach at its doorstep. Whether you're lounging there or near one of multiple pools, the resort's lush gardens give the feel of a tropical paradise. Activities include hits like water polo and beach volleyball, as well as some more unique options like a coffee class and palm weaving.

The property offers four main restaurants and seven bars, including poolside options. Given Costa Rica's prominence as an ecotourism destination, you may also want to visit the pristine rainforests or tropical islands in the area (however, such excursions aren't included in the hotel rates). Previous guests love the proximity to nature and the option to go on wildlife tours, though some travelers feel the resort caters more to locals.

Note: The property will be renovating its 408 guest rooms in different stages between 2023 and 2027.

Frequently Asked Questions

There's no one agency or website that offers the best deals for every all-inclusive resort. Instead, a solid approach is to use a website like Kayak or Expedia to search for resorts that have cheaper pricing available at the time you want to travel. Then, once you have the names of a few affordable options, you can shop around different agencies or websites to see which one offers the cheapest deal.

If you're on the hunt for an all-inclusive deal, it's important to think about your timing – both in terms of when you're booking and when you want to travel. Better deals tend to involve traveling when there's less demand. According to Laura Sangster, founder of luxury travel agency Caribbean Journey , there's typically less demand for all-inclusive properties in the Caribbean, Mexico and Central America during September and October, which are typically part of hurricane season .

"This is when hotels, including all-inclusive resorts, experience the lowest occupancy and thus offer the best deals in an effort to fill rooms. Historically, these have been very active hurricane months. Hurricane season runs from June 1 to Nov. 30, so rates within this period are always less than December to May."

While Sangster notes that it's possible to find last-minute resort deals for travel during these more popular months, she doesn't recommend holding out for such bargains.

"While you might benefit from a decreased hotel rate, airfares currently price the other way and will only be more expensive closer to travel," she says. "It's also important to plan ahead to ensure you are able to secure the room category you want."

Sangster advises travelers to book well in advance to get better prices, particularly if you're hoping to travel during peak season. "We saw very few deals during the 2021 and 2022 peak seasons. All-inclusive resorts seemed to follow a trend of increasing as the weeks and months ticked by," she says. "Our clients who didn't book the initial proposal we prepared often faced higher rates when they came back to book weeks or months later."

Read: The Trick to Finding Cheap Flights

Unfortunately, there isn't one easy answer to this question. It's generally possible to find cruise fares at a cheaper price than all-inclusive vacations, but cruises are known for having more hidden costs that can rack up during your trip. For example, not all cruise fares include alcoholic drinks; you may need to purchase a daily beverage package , which can quickly add to the bill. You may also have to pay more to access some restaurants on board or for excursions when the ship docks.

In contrast, all-inclusive resort rates usually include drinks (alcoholic and nonalcoholic) and meals at all restaurants on the property. It's still possible to incur additional charges for services like spa treatments or some activities like a scuba diving trip, but such fees tend to be for much more obvious extras.

The best way to know whether a cruise or all-inclusive resort is right for you is to do your research before booking. Look at what a cruise fare does and doesn't include, and try to figure out how much you'll need to pay in extra fees to have the vacation you want. You can also check out our breakdown of how much a cruise costs and even browse all-inclusive cruise options to see if they're right for you.
