Unzipping Adventure at Magoebaskloof Canopy Tour!
December 1, 2016 by Lauren Melnick
Last Updated on June 29, 2023 by Lauren Melnick
I woke up on Monday morning with butterflies in my stomach. In a few hours, I was going to be on the road, travelling to Magoebasloof in Limpopo all by myself. I had been invited to Magoesbaskloof Adventure’s Canopy Tour and it would be my first solo road trip. Picking up my rental car, I felt my nerves go into overdrive.
I hadn’t driven in seven months and I was about to navigate the morning traffic of Randburg, Johannesburg.
Table of Contents
Arriving at Magoebaskloof Canopy Tour
About the magoebaskloof area, magoebaskloof canopy tour information, hiking the magoebasloof red trail.
After a brief but brutal storm, multiple toll gates, having the life scared out of my by beeping e-Toll bridges and 400 kilometres later, I finally made it to the treetop paradise of Magoebaskloof. As I came up the mountain I couldn’t believe my eyes. The typical flat Limpopo landscape suddenly transformed into a mountainous masterpiece.
It reminded me of all those Canada National Park Instagram pictures. All of a sudden I was surrounded by giant trees stretching out for as far as the eye could see. I found myself driving around a curvy mountain pass, that was beautiful as it was something out of that cult classic movie The Wrong Turn. I LOVED IT.
This is my element. My phone had lost signal. My radio went dead. All around me was just nature.
I eventually pulled into Magoesbaskloof Adventure’s, just in time to check into my chalet before reception closed for the evening. As cheesy as it sounds, I had to mentally pinch myself at this point. I couldn’t wrap my head around the idea that I was going to be staying in Limpopo for the next three days, surrounded by forest and in a chalet that looked like it had stepped straight out of my Pinterest feed.
And this was only day one. Tomorrow I’d be going on a canopy tour!
Magoebaskloof lies between Polokwane and Tzaneen surrounded by lush plantations and forests. The mountains form part of the very North Eastern tip of the Drakensberg mountain range and the area itself is often called “The Land of Silver Mist.” Or as I like to think of it, a beautiful place to film a home Blair Witch Project remake while enjoying Earth’s natural wonders. The area gets its mist belt from the afro-montane forests and is a welcome oasis to the Limpopo bushveld.
Keep an eye out for the local wildlife that call these forests home such as the baboons, bushbuck, jackals and the endangered Cape parrot!
Ziplining Through The Forests And Over Waterfalls
Magoebaskloof Adventures has been around since 2005 and opened its 11 ziplining circuits in 2009. The Magoebaskloof canopy tour starts in the forests of George’s Valley, an area known for its densely forested ravines and the Great Letaba River. We would be flying through the southern end of the gorge, an area with dramatic cliff falls and beautiful waterfalls that are largely inaccessible unless on an adventure tour. After a brief safety talk and putting on our gear, we started the hike to the first zip line station.
If you have been around on my blog for awhile, you will know that I have a few fears. Another one that we can add to the list is an occasional meltdown over heights. When faced with the prospect of being far from the ground, I usually get chicken shit and bailout.
Leading up to the Magoebaskloof canopy tour, I pictured myself screaming in pure terror and crying for my mother.
Thankfully, facing a few of my other fears this year seems to have given me an extra layer of bad ass. I went off the first platform without a single whimper, moment of hesitation or a flinch of “ oh shit what the f**k have I just agreed to ?”
Instead, I found myself on the next platform grinning ear to ear, eagerly waiting to tackle the next line. By the third line in, I was hooked. I had just flown over a waterfall with a 160-meter drop and it was exhilarating. The views from the mountain ledges were nothing short of amazing and flying over the forest floor and sparkling waters of the Groot Letaba river was just EPIC AS F**K.
The 2.5 hours went by way too fast and before I knew it we were at the second last line of the circuit. This is the longest line, stretching an awesome 160 meters over the gorge and the only one where you get to run and jump off the platform. At the beginning of this year, the thought of doing that would have terrified me and moved me to tears. But when it was my turn, I felt excited and eager to fling myself off the side of a mountain. Who would have guessed that facing my fears of the ocean and going to war with Thailand’s bugs would have made me less chicken shit?
Maybe one day I’ll even work up the courage to go Kloofing.

For my last day in Limpopo, I decided to hike the Red Trail that started a few meters from my chalet. I had just received my new Canon 700D camera a few days ago and wanted to practice shooting with my two new lenses.
This untouched trail forms part of the Woodbrush State Forest, the largest indigenous forest in the Limpopo Province. And when I say this trail is untouched – I mean it. I walked into countless spider webs face-first during the 2 km hike. The trail takes you right down to the river edge and way up high on top of the mountain looking into the gorge below. It’s a fairly easy hike that I felt completely safe doing by myself and only has a moderate incline towards the end.
During the hike, I found myself fascinated with the moss that was growing on the trees and even attempted to take my first macro photo of a spider before having second thoughts and running away.
But my favourite part of the hike had to be right towards the end when I discovered this post-apocalyptic storm drain. It looks like something out of my favourite game, Dead Island. Can’t you just imagine zombies crawling out of here? Or survivors fleeing into its pit of darkness seeking shelter while attempting to hide their brains from the zombie hordes?
Yes. This place has brought out the horror film fanatic in me. But it doesn’t mean Magoebaskloof is scary, I just have an overactive imagination and spend too much of my spare time watching The Walking Dead.
All in all, the Red Trail hike turned out to be a great way to spend an overcast morning in Magoebaskloof. I’d love to come back and do more of the hikes in the area, especially the Haenertsburg Grasslands. The grasslands are the most threatened vegetation type in Limpopo and are home to an amazing diversity of flora and fauna.
Thank you so much to Magoebaskloof Adventures for hosting me! The whole experience made me appreciate South Africa’s diverse landscape even more and made me feel better about coming home early from Thailand!

About Magoebaskloof Canopy Tour
The Limpopo Province in South Africa is one that is abundant in natural splendour, history (even relics and fossils dating back to prehistoric times) and plenty of pure African culture and heritage. Magoebaskloof is situated between Tzaneen and Polokwane and was once completely inaccessible by human beings, due to its dense vegetation and its location.
It is for this reason that the Magoebaskloof Canopy Tours are so special. They take you to a place in this glorious country that has not been touched by urbanisation, commerce and development. Rather, this is a place of dense, verdant greenery, misty waterfalls that tumble to the ground in dramatic rumbles, and peaceful forests that are home to a huge variety of animal species. There are few more idyllic places on the planet in which to embark on an exciting canopy tour.
Suspended metres above the ground from comfortable, safe harnesses, you are able to glide above the beauty, seeing it from a new perspective that allows increased visibility and scope. Although these tours are safe and you are always accompanied by a qualified guide, there is no doubt that these slides certainly get the adrenalin pumping and the heart racing as you build up speed high above the ground, soaring over rivers, past waterfalls and through magnificent forests.
Throughout the tour, the guide will point out plants, birds and other interesting sights so that you get the opportunity to see as much as possible. All of the slides overlook the stunning Groot Letaba River and the Letaba River Gorge. This is without doubt one of the most breath-taking waterfall gorges in the country.
The entire tour takes about 2.5 hours and includes a lunch, some refreshments, a guide and transport.

Weekend guide to magoebaskloof.
K K nown as the ‘land of the silver mist’ by historians and locals, Magoebaskloof is a beautiful mountainous area in the Limpopo Province. Set at the north Eastern tip of the Drakensberg mountain range, with mountains, valleys and a belt of mist creating lush forests. This green oasis is a strikingly different landscape against the rough Limpopo bushveld.
The Magoebaskloof forest is packed with fungi, ferns and age-old trees, with crystal clear streams flowing through the rock pools. This lush forest is a haven for nature lovers, especially those who love long hikes, birding and adventurous mountain biking. Picnic sites are also available for the less adventurous – check out the picnic sites at Dap Naude Dam and Debengeni Falls.
The unique climate of the area has proved useful for not only forestry plantations, but also raspberries, blueberries and avocados. A few ornamental gardens have even sprung up, hosting plants like the Japanese maples and flowering cherry trees – usually better suited to the colder climate.
Right at the centre of Magoebaskloof lies the small village of Haenertsburg. Which features a few restaurants, galleries and shops, along with accommodation.
All of this contributes to the appeal of Magoebaskloof. Making it an ideal weekend getaway for its neighbouring provinces.
W W here to stay
The original Magoebaskloof Hotel was built in 1937 and has remained a popular accommodation choice in the area. Both standard and self-catering rooms are available (from R 1 099pp per night). View their website for more information.

For a boutique experience, Bramasole Luxury Guest House offers both standard and self-catering rooms (from R1 300p per night including breakfast). The property features a medium-sized lake, a lake house and adjacent forests with hiking trails.
For a more charming cottage vibe, Blueberry Heights rents out their 50-year-old cottage to guests. This is the ultimate cosy self-catering cottage, complete with fireplace and lake views. The cottage books out fast, so book in advance .
Camping accommodation is available at Coral Tree Camp (R220pp per night) and Magoebaskloof Adventures , among a few others.
The lush forest offers several different hiking trails, ranging from day hikes through to multi-day hikes. If hiking through the forest doesn’t appeal to you, then perhaps flying through them will. The Magoebaskloof Canopy Tour takes you ziplining through the forest, passing waterfalls, over rivers and along mountainsides. The cost is R660 per person, enquire on their website for more information.
Go birding with one of the best local birding guides, David Letsoala and Paul Nkhumane, at Kurisa Moyo Nature Lodge. Birding walks wander through the forest, looking for the elusive Narina Trogan, usually taking about two hours. Enquire on their website for more information.
Magoebaskloof isn’t only about the outdoors and adventure. Zwakala Brewery, overlooking the Wolkberg Mountains, makes some exceptional craft beers. Sip on their finest brews while snacking on gourmet burgers and tapas.
For some typical pub grub, there’s the Iron Crown Pub & Bistro. An old-time favourite among the locals and frequent travellers, this character-filled pub serves up hearty fare like homemade pies and burgers. Pot & Plow is another typical English pub which is also known for its good pizza.
D D airy lovers need to visit Wegraakbosch Dairy Farm, an organic cheese farm. The farm produces traditional Mutchli, Tilziter, Emmenthaler, Harvati, Feta and cream cheeses. If you’re interested in learning about how the cheese is made, arrive at 10am for the daily farm tour. Visit their website for more information.
Pop into Blueberry Heights Farm for some blueberry picking (only from December to February). If it’s not the season then just head there for a meal at their restaurant, The Mountain Café. Enjoy fresh produce and interesting flavours while taking in the beautiful surroundings. Tip: The blueberry cheesecake is delicious!
DID YOU KNOW that Blueberry Heights is also currently South Africa’s only organic gold kiwi producer?
Other good restaurants to visit include Village Kitchen, Lekwar Restaurant and Minki’s Coffee Shop & Deli.
Events and festivals
Magoebaskloof comes alive in late August and September. This is when the flowers come out – azaleas, apple trees and cherry trees! This is also when the Magoebaskloof/Haenertsburg Spring Festival happens – usually over the Heritage Day weekend.
Early February sees the Berry Festival in Haenertsburg and Blueberry Heights Farm. The Haenertsburg Food, Wine and Beer Festival happens towards the end of April. For mountain bikers, the Magoeba Trek Mountain Bike Stage Race will be taking place in August this year (23, 24 and 25 August 2019).
Smaller arty and wellness festivals and events happen throughout the year.
Getting there
When traveling from Gauteng, take the N1 North towards Polokwane exiting onto the R71 towards Tzaneen. Before getting to Magoebaskloof you will pass the Village of Haenertsburg, about 60km from Polokwane. It’s about a four-hour drive from Johannesburg. It’s en route to the Phalaborwa Gate into the Kruger National Park, making it a good stop-over destination before or after your Kruger trip. Magoebaskloof is a great weekend getaway destination for people residing in Gauteng as well as other areas of Limpopo and Mpumalanga. There’s so much to do both inside and outside, making it ideal for both summer and winter holidays.

AFRICAMPS MAGOEBASKLOOF, LIMPOPO
Unwind in a hiking, mountain biking, and birding paradise
‘Kloof’ translates to gorge, and this gorge is spectacular in many ways. Magoebaskloof is a series of lush green valleys popularly known as ‘The Land of the Silver Mist’ due to the soft mist blanket often covering the valleys. It is this soft mist and good rainfall that creates a thick forest blooming with amazing plant species. Streams, waterfalls, and dams dot the area. During your stay, you will catch glimpses of the lush Afromontane forest, eucalyptus, pine and tea plantations, and avocado, berry, and kiwi farms.
The camp lies just outside Haenertsberg at the popular Cheerio Gardens Wedding Venue. The property is best known for its exquisite gardens – the true passion of former owner and botanist, Sheila ‘Box’ Thompson who started to create the gardens from scratch in 1946. The Gardens have since blossomed into what it is today – one of South Africa’s most beautiful garden wedding venues.
Cherry blossoms, Crab Apple trees, Azaleas, African ferns, and Pin Oaks invite you in, and the vibrant colors of Hydrangeas, Camellias, Irises, and Foxgloves that flourish during spring are sure to steal you over. The abundant birdlife comes as no surprise, and guests can spot Green Twinspot, Barratt’s Warbler, White-starred Robin, Lemon Dove, the elusive Narina Trogon, and Half-collared Kingfisher during their stay. Samango monkeys jumping from tree to tree and the cheerful whistling of farm labourers add to the calm garden atmosphere. Guests can expect a good dose of rest for the soul!
The picturesque Haenertsburg with its rolling grasslands, bright-coloured flowers, and European-influenced architecture can remind guests of a Swiss village. The village and its immaculate gardens invite visitors from far and wide for a peaceful break from the city. You are sure to leave relaxed and recharged.

The gorgeous Cheerio Gardens property is family-owned and has an inspirational history. In 1946, former owner and botanist, Sheila ‘Box’ Thompson started to create the most magnificent gardens on the farm. 75 years later, and the gardens remain the talk of the town for their stunning garden weddings. Today owner Sarah Hillary is the heart and soul behind the popular Cheerio Gardens wedding venue and she loves sharing the legacy of her great aunt with guests:
“Cheerio Gardens is a fascinating fairy tale of an eccentric woman who simply couldn’t live without flowers, today we get to walk in her garden and enjoy her vision as her legacy lives on. As a child I used to spend weekends on the farm roaming around with my cousins, making forts and fairy houses. We loved taking swims in the dam and enjoyed stomping around in the reeds. It is a place where parents can bring their kids and let them be free.”
Sarah’s brothers and husband, JJ, farm avocados, a major farming industry in the area. Sarah and JJ love sharing their property with guests and you can expect a very warm welcome as soon as you enter the farm. Having stayed in Magoebaskloof for years, the family knows the area well and will guide you in the right direction whether you’re an avid hiker or mountain biker or simply want to explore some of the locals’ favourite spots.
Together the family enjoys taking leisurely strolls to the dams and spotting some rare birds on the farm, or popping in at Cheerio Café for their coveted pecan nut pie!
