Thanks Ann. There are many treasures of India that people are unaware of. Nothing to be ashamed of. As far as I know the best quality tea and coffee produced in India are exported to the West because they are way too expensive for Indian markets.

India is really starting to grow on me, I am getting more and more intrigued. And to be honest, if I could afford one more, longer trip in 2020, it would probobly be to India 🙂

Thinking how the words tree and chain came together and became a tourist attraction? Well, it is a magnificent fig tree tied by a long chain. The story of the place goes back to the 18th century. The then Viceroy announced a prize for a person who could find a way from Calicut to Wayanad through the Adivaram forest range. 10:00 am - Start with Banasura Dam

Start your day by visiting Banasura Dam, which is a 49-minute drive from The Hosteller. We suggest you to spend approximately two hours here enjoying a plethora of activities like speed boating, coracle (round bamboo raft) riding, ziplining, and a unique fish spa.

For adventure enthusiasts, you can also trek at Banasura Sagar hill which is almost 9 km, although keep in mind that it can be time-consuming. If you plan to go for a trek, make sure to start no later than 6:00 am. The trek takes 4 to 5 hours two way. (We recommend skipping the trek here, as we have planned a trekking experience on day 3 of your trip.)

Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #6: While there are many exciting paid activities at the dam, choose one adventure activity rather than doing them all. We suggest you go for ziplining as it is cheaper compared to other activities as it costs ₹ 300, whereas other activities cost around ₹ 1000.

12:00 pm - Enjoy Meenmutty Waterfall

After exploring Banasura Dam, head over to Meenmutty Waterfall, which is just a 10-minute drive away from Banasura Dam. To make the most of your visit, reach before 3:00 PM and head to the top of Meenmutty Waterfall, as it offers a beautiful view of the cascading water. If you're lucky, you might catch glimpses of local wildlife or a variety of birds from these spots. Alternatively, you can enjoy a refreshing dip at the starting point.

Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #7: Meenmutty Waterfall has changing rooms approximately 1 km away from the main waterfall. Pack a lightweight change of clothes in your backpack. This way, you won't need to return to the hostel and can head straight for lunch directly.

3:00 pm - Lunch break

After your exciting adventure at Meenmutty Waterfall, around 3:00 PM, you can head for lunch. Try nearby spots like Food Lounge for Kerala fusion (12 min drive), Udupi Bhavan for veg South Indian (10 min drive), or Lake View for scenic Kerala-style seafood (14 min drive).

Alternatively, you can also return to The Hosteller if you need some rest and can have your lunch over there.

4:30 pm - Visit Wayanad Tea Museum

In the late afternoon, make your way to the Wayanad Tea Museum, just a 30-minute drive from The Hosteller and also from the restaurants mentioned above. The museum itself takes about 15 minutes to explore. You can also visit their café that serves authentic tea and coffee. Be sure to go for a tea-tasting experience, where you can savor the variety of flavors of Wayanad’s teas.

6:00 pm - Return to The Hosteller

After a day filled with a great mix of nature and culture in Wayanad, it's time to return back to The Hosteller. Once you're back, you can either engage in indoor games with fellow travellers or chill in the common area or simply relax in your dorm. It's a fantastic way to conclude your eventful day in Wayanad.

4:00 am - Chembra Peak trek

You have to start your day at 4 am for a stunning sunrise experience at Chembra Peak. It is the highest peak in Wayanad at an altitude of 6,890 feet above sea level and the highest peak in the Western Ghats that is above 2,000 m. The trek starts from the ticket counter and takes almost 3 hours to reach the top point. It's a bit challenging because of the steep terrain. The trek takes you through tea plantations, dense forests, and overgrown grasslands.

As you climb up, keep an eye out for the heart-shaped lake, a unique and romantic feature of this hike. Once you reach the top, you will get a 360-degree view of the Western Ghats, and an entire view of Wayanad and Kozhikode, Malappuram and Niligiri districts.

Note: Permission is required from the forest department to start the Chembra Peak trek, and only 200 people are allowed per day.

Budget-friendly Wayanad travel tip #8: If you are traveling alone or with just two to three people, we recommend that you consider forming a group of 10 individuals. This will allow you to share the entry costs of the trek, as the cost per person and group remains the same.

2:00 pm - Return to The Hosteller

Having completed your thrilling trek to Chembra Peak, return back to your dorm by 2:00 pm to relax and take a rest after the morning's adventure. For lunch, consider visiting the nearby Rest N Dine restaurant, conveniently located just a 20-minute walk from The Hosteller. Alternatively, you have the option to order from ‘Unbox Cafe’, our in-house café, which offers a variety of delightful options to satisfy your post-trek hunger.

6:00 pm - Explore Local Shopping

Around 6 PM, go out for local shopping in Kalpetta and Sulthan Bathery, two towns in Wayanad. You can find local markets and shops offering a variety of items, including spices such as pepper, cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, etc. You can also find handicrafts like pottery, handwoven textiles, wooden items, traditional clothing, and more in these markets. Be sure to check with the staff at The Hosteller for recommendations on the best places to shop for authentic local products.

After shopping in Kalpetta and Sultan Bathery, you can also go for the local cuisine. We recommend trying Kerala's traditional dishes such as Puttu, Kadala Curry, Meen Mutta Omelette, Fish Moilee, and Payasam. You can catch a bus from there to reach your destination which will cost around ₹300.

A 3-day Trip to Wayanad, Kerala: How to make the most of it

Kerala is indeed God’s own country!

And Wayanad is one of the best weekend getaways from Bangalore. It is about 280 km from Bangalore, but the roads are good, and the route is fantastic. You will reach Wayanad in 6 hours. For route reference and more details, check out my detailed article on Wayanad, Kerala trip .

I booked the Wayanad trip with an all-women travel organiser  start-up in Bangalore called TheeBeauties.

Since we wanted to skip nighttime travel, we started from Bangalore at 7 AM. The journey was so fun with all of us playing dumb charades and random games, and some of us sleeping peacefully 😊

As referred above, the route from Bangalore to Wayanad passed through the Bandipur National Reserve. So we got to drive through a picturesque road.

Remember: The Bandipur gate closes by 9 PM and opens at 6 AM. Plan your travel accordingly. We traveled during a high-traffic long weekend in Bangalore, and the Forest Department officials didn’t want the Reserve road to get crowded. So we had to wait at the gate for about 2 hours before the Forest Department officials cleared the traffic and let us go. But I didn’t mind the wait at all because it was such a beautiful place! We had stopped near a farm, and I could walk around, click pictures, and chase hens.

Finally, we reached Wayanad at night!

Day 1: Shopping!

The first thing we did was shop! 😆 We stopped at a local market to buy Tea powder, Coffee, chocolates, and more! Here is when I tried Ela Ada. The love affair that began in Wayanad is still on! Ela Ada is, to date, one of my favourite sweets. Here’s a brief description and recipe of the dish: Ela Ada, Kerala’s delicacy.

Day 2: Edakkal Caves

Edakkal caves.

Timings: 9 AM to 4 PM, Monday closed

At the height of 1,200 meters on the Ambukuthi Hill, Edakkal Caves is one of the best things you should do in Wayanad. You don’t have to hike to the caves; there are steps. However, it is not as easy as it sounds! You have to climb a hilly terrain for 1 km followed by 380 steps to reach the caves.

But trust me, the caves and the view would be worth it all!

And you will find small shops and refreshment centres on the way if you want to rest.

Banasura Sagar Dam

Timings: 6 AM to 6 PM

After visiting the caves, we left for the famous Banasura Sagar Dam in Kalpetta . It is Asia’s 2nd largest dam. A beautiful chain of hills surrounds the dam. The beautiful pictures below are viewpoints from the dam.

That ended our adventure for Day 2. But Day 3 was going to be much, MUCH better!

Day 3: Chembra Peak Trek

Timings: Check the timings before you leave.

Since it was a long weekend and all offices were closed, there was a LOT of traffic and tourists. So we started for the base camp at 3 AM to stand in line for the ticket. I am proud to say we were the FIRST ONES to get the ticket 😆😆

We were done with the Chembra hike by 3 PM.

Pookode Lake

Timings: 9 AM to 5 PM

Tired from the hike, we decided to make a short and quick stop at the Pookode Lake.

Mysore train station is nearest railway station to Wayanad which is 188 km away while nearest airport is the Karipur international airport at Kozhikode which is at the distance of 100 kms. Day 1: Kochi – Kannur (275 KMS/7 HRS) Welcome on arriving at Cochin Airport you will be greeted by AMT’s representative. After warm greetings start your journey to Kannur. Fondly known as Cannanore, this beautiful town is bundled with a plethora of sightseeing options like beaches, monuments & ancient temples. After arriving at Kannur chaeck in at your hotel. Evening free at lesiure followed by overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 2: Kannur Local Sightseeing After morning breakfast proceed to explore this beautiful city of Kerala. Visit St. Angelo Fort, Arakkal Museum Parassinikkadavu Temple & Parassinikkadavu Snake Park. In the evening explore the beaches of Kannur. Later return to hotel followed by overnight stay at the hotel.

Day 3: Kannur – Wayanad (110 KMS/3 HRS) After morning breakfast checkout from the hotel & proceed to Wayanad. Wayanad, the green paradise is nestled among the mountains of the Western Ghats, Wayanad is among the prettiest areas of Kerala. Reach Wayanad by afternoon & check in at your hotel. After arriving visit Beypore the small town is famous for its ship building & beypore Beach. Later visit Tali Temple, Krishna Menon Museum. Later check in at your hotel. In the evening you can visit the local market of Kozhikode area. Later return to hotel followed by overnight stay at the hotel.
