Rashford named in Man Utd's travelling squad for Sevilla clash but three key players missing
United face sevilla in their europa league quarter-final second leg on thursday..
Rory O'Callaghan
Marcus Rashford has been named in Manchester United's travelling squad for their Europa League clash with Sevilla.
United travel to face the La Liga side in Andalusia on Thursday night with the quarter-final tie finely poised at 2-2 after the first leg at Old Trafford.
Rashford has been passed fit for the match after returning to training on Wednesday.
The England international, who has scored six goals in eight games in the Europa League this season, missed the first leg against Sevilla and the weekend win over Nottingham Forest with a groin injury.
Luke Shaw has also been named in the squad after missing United's last three matches with a hamstring problem.
Tyrell Malacia has also been included after missing the Forest win with a knee problem, while Marcel Sabitzer has also made the cut after being pulled from the starting line-up at the City Ground following an issue in the warm-up.
Their availability is a major boost for manager Erik ten Hag, who is without a number of first-team players for the trip to Spain.
Bruno Fernandes is suspended after picking up a booking in the first leg against Sevilla, while Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez both picked up serious injuries in that match.
Martinez has been ruled out for the rest of the season after suffering a fractured metatarsal, while Varane is expected to be out for 'a few weeks' with an unspecified injury sustained which forced him off at half-time.
Scott McTominay has also not been included after failing to recover from a knock, while Donny van de Beek and Alejandro Garnacho are long-term absentees.
Should they beat Sevilla, United will face either Juventus or Sporting Lisbon in the semi-finals of the Europa League, with the Italian side leading 1-0 from the first leg.

‘A core ingredient’: Manchester United celebrate 250th academy graduate
Ethan Wheatley became the latest homegrown talent to make their first-team debut in the win over Sheffield United
T he quarter of a millennia has been 93 years in the making at Old Trafford and it was poignant that a local lad, Ethan Wheatley, became the 250th academy graduate to make their debut for Manchester United’s senior men’s team on Wednesday night.
The 18-year-old had spent the previous evening scoring two goals to help defeat Manchester City to win the Premier League Cup. Wheatley, who like his teammate Kobbie Mainoo was born in Stockport, became the 101st player from Greater Manchester to make the leap from academy to elite when he replaced Rasmus Højlund late on against Sheffield United .
In 1931 the half-back Tom Manley became the first to progress through the ranks and there has been a graduate in every matchday squad for more than 4,000 matches since 1937. United have won 11 FA Youth Cups, two more than anyone else, with the most recent coming under the guidance of Travis Binnion in 2022 when Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho were in the team. Development is at the heart of what United do but, equally, they realise that winning is a good habit to learn at an early age.
“I would suggest it [the academy] is one of the core ingredients of Manchester United, both in the modern day and throughout history,” says their director of academy, Nick Cox. “Academies or youth development programmes were designed years ago as a cheap way of building a first-team squad. There wasn’t much money in the game and chairmen couldn’t afford to run football clubs. What happened here was that we carried on playing after the [second] world war because we had a youth programme running, so our club stayed alive playing quickly after the war because of our youth programme.
“We survived Munich because of our youth programme. We survived tough days, when maybe it wasn’t going so well on the pitch in the 1970s, because of our youth programme. But then you look at our greatest successes and see when we have won Champions Leagues and league titles, young players have been at the heart of it.”
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has made it known that he regards a prosperous academy as a great asset. While the first team have underwhelmed this season, Adam Lawrence’s under-18s have won their league, losing one of 22 matches, before adding the Premier League Cup at Leigh on Tuesday under the watchful gaze of the new technical director, Jason Wilcox. The former Blackburn winger previously worked as academy director at Manchester City so will take a keen interest in the youth setup at United, where he will oversee coaching methodology and player pathways.
Wheatley will receive a blazer with a United crest, in a nod to the past, have his name engraved on the graduate wall at the training ground and his photo placed on the wall of the club’s graduate lounge for academy parents, as Cox mixes history and the modern day.
Of the 250, a fifth have made a solitary appearance, although some have the chance to add to that. The challenge is to ensure the first-team squad contains as many of their own products as possible but there is a realism with United’s academy that the majority will spend their careers away from the club.
after newsletter promotion
The aim is to make sure they are prepared for life outside the Premier League bubble. Many academy players are sent on work experience across the Football League and National League to train with professionals at lower levels and find out the reality of life outside an elite club. Wheatley, for example, spent a week with League Two’s bottom club, Forest Green, this season. Youth development is evolving, which is why Wheatley was back at school on Thursday morning as part of his BTec in marketing.
“He’s just got himself to the start line and we are really clear with all of our boys that trying to be a footballer is really hard,” Cox says. “Our programme is built on the premise that in striving for excellence, you are going to develop some amazing skills and qualities and you are going to have some wonderful experiences. You might end up somewhere else equally as magical that isn’t our first team, you might end up being a sports journalist or a doctor and we are proud of the boys that take those journeys as well. When a boy makes a debut there is still work to be done.”
While Wheatley is starting his journey, United are well established as one of the great educators of players and are reaping the rewards of changing with the times. Like their young striker, United will keep learning from experience.

The end of this season cannot come soon enough for Manchester United.
With a maximum of eight games left to play, only winning the FA Cup will save what has otherwise been a season to forget. United have lost 12 times in the Premier League and have four points fewer than what they had after 32 games under David Moyes in 2013/14.
Regardless of what happens with Erik ten Hag's future, it is no secret that big changes need to be made to the landscape of the squad. As revealed by the Manchester Evening News in February, a record number of sales are planned, meaning exits could reach double figures.

United invested more than £150million in three big-name signings last summer, drafting in Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Rasmus Hojlund, yet they are now further away from ending their Premier League title drought than they were at this point last year. Ineos plan to bring the good times back to M16, but to do that they need to improve United's hit rate when it comes to recruitment.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe has already hinted that he wants to change United's outlook on the market . Therefore, what could United's ideal 25-man squad for the 2024/25 campaign look like? Analysing potential additions and outlining why certain members of the squad need offloading, we've taken a close look.
United invested big-money in Onana last summer and he has improved as this season has unfolded, meaning he will retain the gloves and continue as the club's No.1. Altay Bayindir is likely to be retained as their No.2, but uncertainty surrounds Tom Heaton's future as his contract expires at the end of this season.
Whatever happens with Raphael Varane's future, United need to add fresh blood at centre-back. Injuries have hampered Ten Hag's hopes of discovering any form consistency in the heart of the defence this term, with Lisandro Martinez enduring a nightmare campaign.
However, when fit, the Argentine is one of the very first names on the teamsheet, meaning he will continue to occupy the left-sided centre-back berth. Varane's fitness struggles mean United should refrain from offering him a new deal, opening up the door for a new addition to occupy the right-sided centre-back spot.
Jarrad Branthwaite of Everton and Bayer Leverkusen ace Edmond Tapsoba are on United's radar, while they have often been linked with OGC Nice ace Jean-Clair Todibo and Gleison Bremer of Juventus. Should any member of that aforementioned quartet be drafted in, likewise anyone else, Harry Maguire or Victor Lindelof will need offloading. Maguire has improved this season and may be retained over Lindelof, while Jonny Evans may bag a one-year extension to keep the centre-back department well-stocked.
Diogo Dalot has enjoyed a successful campaign, meaning he is likely to be retained over Aaron Wan-Bissaka. The latter would command a respectable fee that can be reinvested and United are keeping tabs on Leverkusen ace Jeremie Frimpong . At left-back, however, United have a puzzle to solve after an injury-infested campaign in that area of the team, with Tyrell Malacia missing all of the campaign and Luke Shaw being absent for large chunks of it. A new left-back, in the end, may take priority over a new starting right-back.
If United strengthen any position this summer, it has to be defensive-midfield. Casemiro's sharp regression means they need to find a replacement as an overriding priority and Benfica's Joao Neves is being heavily linked with a move to M16. Casemiro has been a passenger in recent months and it is clear United need fresh legs to complement the qualities of Kobbie Mainoo and Bruno Fernandes, who will continue as first-choice options beyond the end of this season.
Casemiro, ideally, needs offloading, likewise Scott McTominay and Christian Eriksen. McTominay's nine-goal haul this season means he will command a sizeable transfer fee and every penny secured will be pure profit due to his status as an academy graduate. However, United may not be able to offload McTominay until they have found a suitable replacement.
Donny van de Beek also needs moving on, likewise Hannibal Mejbri, meaning United may explore the possibility of drafting in a new attacking-midfielder to support Fernandes. Leicester City ace Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall has been linked with the club recently.
Signing a striker also needs to be a leading objective. Anthony Martial's contract is not going to be renewed, meaning Hojlund needs a form of competition and support. A cluster of forwards have been linked with moves to Old Trafford, but many of those have been somewhat fanciful.
United need to strike the balance between signing someone who has potential to improve and can provide adequate competition but without paying over the odds. RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko, who was on the club's radar in 2022, is once again being linked with a move to M16.
A lot of uncertainty surrounds United's wide options, with both Marcus Rashford and Antony being linked with exits. The club, at this stage, is unlikely to dip into the market unless one or more of their current star wingers depart. The likes of Facundo Pellistri, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood could all be offloaded permanently.
Goalkeepers: Onana, Bayindir, Heaton
Defenders: Dalot, Frimpong, Branthwaite, Martinez, Maguire, Kambwala*, Evans, Shaw, Malacia, Amass*
Midfielders: Neves*, Mainoo*, Fernandes, Dewsbury-Hall, McTominay, Mount, Gore*
Attackers: Garnacho*, Antony, Amad, Hojlund, Sesko, Wheatley*, Rashford
Sell: Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Fernandez, Eriksen, Casemiro, Hannibal, Van de Beek, Sancho, Pellistri, Greenwood
Release: Varane, Williams, Forson (if new deal is not agreed), Martial
*Denotes player will be under the age of 21 at the start of next season and does not have to be included on the Premier League squad list.
Under the Premier League squad rules, players under the age of 21 do not have to be included within the main 25-man squad, allowing more freedom for clubs to beef up their ranks with players over that threshold. Interestingly, United only named 21 senior players when they gave their squad to the Premier League in January, with a number of youngsters bolstering the ranks.

Bruno Fernandes finally answers critics as Man Utd icon points out key change
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been one of their standout players in a difficult season and has not shone away from expectations despite facing criticism
- 16:17, 25 Apr 2024
- Updated 16:42, 25 Apr 2024
For all the criticism that comes his way, Bruno Fernandes has proved himself Manchester United's man for all seasons.
While the treatment room at United's Carrington training base is packed with at least 10 injured players, Fernandes continues to play on through the pain barrier and lead by example. Despite sporting heavy strapping and bandaging on his right hand, Fernandes still managed to haul United to victory, twice from a losing position, scoring a double himself and setting up Rasmus Hojlund for the final goal in Wednesday's hard-fought 4-2 win over Sheffield United.
Remarkably, Portugal playmaker Fernandes has not missed a game through injury in four years at United, since making his debut in a 0-0 draw with Wolves on February 1 st 2020. Since he joined, United have played 241 matches, of which Fernandes has played 229, 219 of them starts.
Of the 12 games he has missed, five were due to suspension, three as an unused sub, in three he was rested and one he missed through illness. While some players rule themselves out with the slightest strain or discomfort, Fernandes always makes himself available, irrespective of any ailments he may be feeling.
The 29-year-old is football's equivalent of the Duracell bunny, still going long after everyone else has run out of power, ready to go again the next time he is called upon to perform. Fernandes has an army of detractors, for his emotional approach, principally his habitual haranguing of referees, as well as his propensity for theatrics when tackled.
But such criticism overlooks his durability, which is reminiscent of one of his predecessors at United, Bryan Robson, nicknamed Captain Marvel for his remorseless resilience. Former United skipper Robson has been impressed with Fernandes this season and said: “He's a very fit lad, he works hard in training and he's leading by example at the moment.
“Results haven't been going as well as we would have liked, but Bruno's standing up to be counted when it really matters, especially with all of the injuries this season. Even if he's got a bit of a knock, he'll play through it, because he wants to play all the time. It's a great record he's got, since he's been at the club, in terms of how many games he's played.
“This season, I feel that arguing with the referee over decisions and getting bookings he shouldn't have got, he hasn't had as many of them, so he's getting better at that. You can have a conversation with a referee, but don't do it in a way that's going to get you booked, because it can end up in suspensions and missing really important games because of it.
“He's only really missed games because of suspensions. A lot of the time you can't be 100 per cent fit, so you've got to play and get through games without damaging yourself any more, which he's done well. Over the last six or seven games he's led by example. He steps up to the mark with penalties, he wants to take responsibility and you can see him trying to help the younger players when things aren't going well for the team.”
It has been a tough first season for Fernandes as United captain, having succeeded Harry Maguire , but those within the club have been impressed with how he has adapted to the role. Multi-lingual, he is seen as the conduit between the squad and boss Erik ten Hag, adept at dealing with senior and younger players, while demanding the highest standards on and off the pitch.

Man Utd make unusual change to travel plans for 8pm Brentford clash in desperate bid to have crocked stars available

MANCHESTER UNITED have made the rare decision to travel to an away match on the day of the game.
United face Brentford at 8pm tonight and would usually fly into the capital a day before kick off.
But the club decided to travel just hours before the match is due to start.
Capitalising on the late kick off time, it allows United's crocked stars extra time to recover from injury or illness.
Newly-capped England international Kobbie Mainoo missed training on Thursday as he was unwell but returned to Carrington on Friday.
United usually tell unwell players to stay away from the first team to reduce the risk of a virus spreading.

"We hope. Today he is there (in training), not fully recovered but we still have many hours before tomorrow with kick-off at 8pm."

Manchester United ’s injury problems at the back show no signs of improving ahead of the visit of Burnley on Saturday afternoon.
United have been without all but one of their centre-halves with Lisandro Martinez , Raphael Varane, Victor Lindelof, Jonny Evans and Willy Kambwala all missing the club’s last two games.
It has left Erik ten Hag will little choice to drop Casemiro back to partner Harry Maguire at centre-half with 18-year-old Louis Jackson their only available option on the bench.
Speaking after Wednesday’s win over Sheffield United, ten Hag suggested none of those injured options will be available for the visit of Vincent Kompany’s side.
Mason Mount however is in contention to return after another knock ruled him out of United’s last two games.
Sofyan Amrabat meanwhile was back among the subs midweek and could be ready to start this weekend.
Marcus Rashford also missed the 4-2 win over the Blades after picking up a knock in extra time against Coventry.
Antony replaced him in the starting XI, much to the frustration of United fans desperate to see Amad Diallo handed an opportunity.

Manchester United are back in action in the Premier League on Saturday, as we face Burnley in a 15:00 BST kick-off at Old Trafford.
It’s been seven months since we battled with the Clarets at Turf Moor in the Premier League, with United coming away with three points in a hard-earned 1-0 win.
Erik ten Hag’s side will be looking to ride the wave of the win in the FA Cup over Coventry last weekend, and the following victory over Sheffield United at Old Trafford on Wednesday, and use this fixture to close the gap on fifth-placed Tottenham.

Sunday’s FA Cup tie at Wembley added another two names to United’s extensive injury list, as both Marcus Rashford and opening goalscorer Scott McTominay were substituted, while Willy Kambwala, Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat were left out of the tie against Coventry.
Rashford missed Wednesday's win over Sheffield United, but McTominay and Amrabat came off the bench. Ten Hag said Mount should be available for Burnley .
Casemiro played his second game at centre-back against the Blades, partnering Harry Maguire.
For Vincent Kompany’s men, both Nathan Redmond and Aaron Ramsey are sidelined for the season, while Jordan Beyer and Ameen Al-Dakhil are unlikely to return. Lyle Foster has been passed fit to play after being withdrawn early last weekend.
