The area is less temperate than some — in the 11th percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above . If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit Manila, the hottest months are May, April, and then June. See average monthly temperatures below. The warmest time of year is generally mid May where highs are regularly around 93.5°F (34.2°C) with temperatures rarely dropping below 80.8°F (27.1°C) at night.

Manila Temperatures (Fahrenheit)

Manila temperatures (celsius), “feels-like” temperatures.

The way we experience weather isn’t all about temperature. Higher temperatures affect us much more at higher humidity, and colder temperatures feel piercing with high winds. Our perceived temperatures factor in humidity and wind chill to better represent how hot or cold the day feels to a person.

Manila Perceived Temperature (F)

Manila perceived temperature (c), average manila temperatures by month.

Daily highs (averaged for the month) usually give the best indication of the weather. A significantly lower mean and low generally just means it gets colder at night.

The Busiest and Least Crowded Months

The busiest month for tourism in Manila, the Philippines is January, followed by April and May. Prices for hotels and flights will be most expensive during these months, though you can save if you purchase well in advance. Tourists are unlikely to visit Manila in December. Those willing to visit at these times will likely find it the least expensive month.

Estimated Tourism by Month

Most popular months to visit, overall manila travel experience by season, spring (march through may).

Humidity and temperatures combine to make this season feel very warm. Highs range from 93.5°F (34.2°C) and 88.5°F (31.4°C) with warmer temperatures in the later months. Rain is somewhat common with 3 to 8 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the busiest for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for things to do.

Summer (June through August)

The middle-year months have very comfortable weather with high temperatures that are quite warm. These months see the most precipitation with 12 to 17 days of precipitation per month. June – August is fairly slow season for tourism in Manila, so lodging and other accommodations may cost slightly less.

Fall (September through November)

Fall daily highs range from 88.9°F (31.6°C) and 87.8°F (31°C), which will feel very nice given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a good amount: 8 to 17 days per month. Tourism is the slowest during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be affordably priced.

Winter (December through February)

Weather is perfect this time of year in Manila to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 88.5°F (31.4°C) and 85.1°F (29.5°C). On average, it rains or snows a smalll amount: 2 to 6 times per month. These times of year are the second busiest with tourists.

Best Time to Visit the Philippines: Month by Month Breakdown

The Philippines is one of the most beautiful and diverse archipelagos in the world, but its tropical location close to the equator also ensures that this is a country that’s very much at the mercy of the changing seasons.

The Filipino year is predominantly split into a wet and a dry season, which for travel purposes conform to the low and the high season.

The best time to visit the Philippines is the dry season, which falls between November and April, while the wet season, between May and October, is not the best time to be in the country.

Plan carefully, because the wet season brings dangerous typhoons, landslides and disrupted travel, whereas the dry season brings clear skies and sunshine.

To help you to plan your trip, here’s our guide to the best time to visit the Philippines.

Don’t leave home without: Lonely Planet Philippines (Country Guide)

Philippines Dry Season

Boat on a beach - best time to visit the philippines

The dry season is easily the best time to visit the Philippines, because this is when the weather is absolutely glorious, and the sun is always shining.

Generally speaking, the dry season runs from November through to April. However, the typhoon season can be notoriously unpredictable and it’s not uncommon for storms or even fully-fledged typhoons to hit the Philippines as late as December.

To be guaranteed clear skies and no rain you’ll want to travel between January and April.

This though, is peak season, while March and April are the Filipino summers when the weather can be unbearably hot.

November in the Philippines

Nacpan Beach in the Philippines

November is seen as the start of the dry season in the Philippines, but be warned that the weather can still be unpredictable.

Typhoons can still ravage the coast, although they are much rarer than in the wet season. If a typhoon does hit later in the year, it tends to be more dangerous, as people are less prepared.

This is a good shoulder month though, as the crowds are still thin, and it’s not quite as humid or hot as other times of the year.

If you don’t mind the odd rainstorm, and if you keep an eye on the typhoon warnings, then November is a great time to visit the most popular destinations in the Philippines, as there will be fewer people around.

Take a trip to Coron or El Nido for the start of the island hopping season, or visit Bohol or Cebu for the first dives of the dry season.

December in the Philippines

Drone Boat Photo in the Philippines

December is one of the best times to be in the Philippines if you love a good fiesta because as a predominantly Catholic nation, Filipinos go absolutely crazy for Christmas.

In fact, Filipinos start to prepare for Christmas as early as September – yes, really, September – and it all comes to a head in December.

Expect things to be incredibly busy though, as locals and tourists alike are moving around for the holiday season. It’s hectic, but it’s a lot of fun wherever you go in December.

January in the Philippines

Lina Stock of the Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog in the Philippines

January is peak season in the Philippines, and weather-wise it’s possibly the best time to visit the Philippines.

Conditions are beautiful, and it’s not too hot yet, while there’s also little chance of rainfall. The skies are clear and you won’t have to worry about typhoons.

Popular islands such as Palawan, Coron and Cebu are going to be busy and expensive in January, although there’s no better time to be snorkeling or scuba diving.

If you want to escape the crowds and enjoy the weather then there are plenty more islands to explore.

Head south, and visit Camiguin, just a boat ride away from Bohol but with none of the crowds. Brave Mindanao for an offbeat experience or head to Romblon or Mindoro for beach getaways.

February in the Philippines

Drone Boat photo - Philippines

February is peak season too, although generally, it’s a little quieter than January. While the weather is wonderful for classic destinations such as Siargao, Cebu or Palawan, again it’s going to be busy.

Take the chance to go snorkeling and diving, and to explore lesser-known destinations in February.

Visit Malapascua Island to dive with friendly Thresher Sharks, or head to Donsol for an ethically minded outing with Whale Sharks, as they pass through the region.

March in the Philippines

LIna Stock of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog snorkeling in the Philippines

March is busy and it’s hot, and locals will tell you that this is not the best time to visit the Philippines.

This is what locals call the Filipino Summer because temperatures can rise well above 40 degrees Celsius in parts of the country.

It’s hot and it’s dry, so be careful in the sunshine. It’s great weather for a traditional beach holiday in Cebu or Bohol, while underwater conditions are great in Coron where you can find old sunken shipwrecks from World War II.

Head to the mountains though, if you want to cool down and escape the heat.

April in the Philippines

Pass Island in the Philippines

April is just as hot, if not hotter than March, and it can be exceptionally busy if you are here during the Easter Holidays.

There are lots of fiestas in April so it’s a fun time to be here, but some fiestas, like the Crucifixion in San Fernando, aren’t for the faint of heart.

While the coast is hot and dry, the mountains of the Cordilleras, in Central Luzon, are at their best.

Head to the summer capital, Baguio, for cooler climes and intriguing history, before traveling to an even higher altitude, where you can find the spectacular Rice Terraces of Banaue.

Philippines Wet Season

Wet Season in the Philippines

The wet season usually begins in May, and ends in October, however, the rainy season can be entirely unpredictable in the Philippines.

You might have exceptional weather in May and June, with the rains not arriving until later in the year, or you might find yourself in the midst of a typhoon as soon as the wet season begins.

While things are cheaper in the wet season, travel around the Philippines can be fraught with danger, especially between June and August.

This is not the best time of the year to visit the Philippines, because with the storms and rain can come canceled flights and ferries, blocked roads and landslides, and dangerous typhoon warnings.

In the wet season, always keep an eye on the weather conditions, because natural disasters in the Philippines can be deadly.

May in the Philippines

Banca Boat at Malcapuya Island in the Philippines

May could well be the best time to visit the Philippines because although it’s technically the start of the rainy season, you’ll be extremely unlucky to be caught up in typhoons or even rainstorms.

You might experience clouds towards the end of the month, but it’s going to be dry for most of May.

The crowds will be thinning out now too, so head to Palawan and Coron for Island hopping. The snorkeling will still be superb because the water will be wonderfully clear still.

Travel to Cebu and Bohol too, where prices are dropping. You can enjoy the beaches and the islands, while the Chocolate Hills will be at their most chocolaty and brown, as it’s the driest part of the year.

June in the Philippines

Lina Stock of the Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog on a beach in the Philippines

By June though, it’s going to be rainy, and this is when the wet season really starts to kick off in earnest.

While flights and accommodation are going to be much cheaper in June, you need to be careful.

The wet weather brings a huge array of dangers, and if there’s a typhoon warning you can be in trouble, as evacuations can be common.

Keep a close eye on the weather, and if you do decide to visit in June then keep to the west coast. Typhoons tend to hit the east coast first and move westwards.

You can chance Palawan and Coron, or still enjoy much of Luzon too.

July in the Philippines

Camping on a remote beach in the Philippines

July can be just as bad as June, weatherwise, and again it’s not the best time to visit the Philippines.

Prices will be lower and there are none of the dry season crowds, but that’s because this is the middle of the typhoon season.

You can head to the western islands, such as Palawan or Coron, but even here you’ll be experiencing rain, if not typhoons too.

August in the Philippines

David Stock Jr of Divergent Travelers Adventure Travel Blog on a remote beach adventure in the Philippines

In August, the bad weather just keeps on coming. This is one of the worst times to be in the Philippines.

It’s going to be rainy and there’s likely to be typhoon warnings all through the month.

You can still visit certain parts of the west, as you’ll have more warning of typhoons, but don’t go too remote as you’ll have difficulty getting out in the event of bad weather.

September in the Philippines

Banca boat in the Philippines

The weather begins to calm down in September, although it can still be unpredictable.

There are fewer typhoons, but again, these can always hit without warning in the rainy season.

You’ll be enjoying the Philippines with fewer crowds around and lower prices, and it’s a good time to visit popular islands such as Cebu and Palawan before the dry season tourists begin to arrive.

October in the Philippines

Malcapuya Beach - best time to visit the Philippines

October is the last month of the rainy season, but it can go either way. You’ll either have beautiful sunny weather and clear skies, or lots of rain.

Typhoons are rare but don’t ignore the warnings and keep an eye on the weather still.

Head to the beaches if it’s sunny, and start island hopping around El Nido or Coron before the crowds show up in the dry season.

What is the best time to visit Manila?

The best time to visit Manila is during the drier months of January to April. Though temperatures are high during March and April, still it is a good time when you wouldn't need to tackle the rains. The dry season is the best time when you can hire a bike and roam through Manila, do not forget to visit Intramuros, which is the oldest part of the city. The wet season in Manila lasts from June to November. But it does rain in December as well. As Manila is a booming city, one can visit it year round, but the wet season tends to be hot and humid, which restricts tourists from going around the town. Some streets in Manila also get flooded during this time. Manila is also prone to cyclones, so tourists should skip the wetter months, which are also considered off-season for tourism in the city. If you do visit Manila during the wet season, do make sure you check the weather reports to see the severity of the rains.

A brief history of Manila

Manila, the capital of the Philippines, is part of a huge urban area known as Metropolitan Manila. Its position on the banks of the Pasig River has been both a blessing and a curse; it was a prosperous walled Muslim settlement funded by customs duties imposed on passing ships when Spanish conquistadors sailed into town in 1521. The Spanish destroyed the settlement and replaced it with the walled fortress of Intramuros, which became the capital of the Spaniards’ new colony. Spanish rule came to an end with 1898’s Spanish American war, when the Spanish surrendered to American forces. The US encouraged the county’s quest for independence, which it achieved (following a period of Japanese occupation during WWII), in 1946. Large parts of the city had been destroyed during the war, and a huge reconstruction effort (funded largely by US aid) transformed it into the world’s most densely-populated city.

Things to see and do in Manila

Manila’s museums are some of the best in Asia. Start with a wander around the Ayala Museum , famous for its collections of gold artefacts – more specifically, 1,000 items dating back to the sixteenth century. The National Museum , which has been free to visit since 2016, has collections dedicated to archaeology, ethnography and natural history, along with –slightly randomly – one of the largest collections of endemic plant species. For a history fix, head to the Intramuros district (meaning “within walls” in Spanish). This fortified city was founded by the Spanish in 1571 and its layout, with neat plazas, cannon-topped walls and thick stone archways, is a world away from the rest of Manila.

Equally historic is Binondo – the world’s oldest Chinatown. It was founded in 1594 by the Spanish, who decided to set aside a hilly slab of Manila (hence the name, derived from the Tagalog word binondoc , meaning mountainous) for Chinese immigrants who’d converted to Catholicism. It’s colourful, chaotic and crowded – horse-drawn carriages share the road with over-stuffed jeepneys (kitschly decorated, jeep-shaped buses you’ll see throughout Manila) and shopkeepers’ wares spill into the road. The temples and the Chinese restaurants are the main attractions, along with the rust-red Binondo Church, otherwise known as the Minor Basilica of Saint Lorenzo Ruiz. This baroque-style church was founded in the late sixteenth century by Dominican priests.

Where to eat and drink in Manila

The city’s bar scene is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in Asia. This year's Asia’s 50 Best Bar Awards featured three Manila watering holes: The Curator, which specialises in both cocktails and coffee, OTO bar and the speakeasy-style Back Room. These three aside, another of Manila’s best bars is the Peninsula hotel’s Salon de Ning, where head bartender Rico Deang whips up cocktails which pay tribute to his homeland.

For a cheap and cheerful night out, head to nearby Poblacion. Don’t be put off by the fact that it’s also the red light district – there are some great bars here, including Joe's Brew, founded by Joey Viray, a Filipino who studied beer production at the University of California.

Although Manila’s street food offerings might not rival Hong Kong ’s or Bangkok ’s there’s still plenty of delicious grub to chow down on. The Makati neighbourhood has some of the best restaurants, including many founded by chefs putting innovative twists on traditional cuisine. This includes Sarsa Kitchen + Bar, famous for its rich signature sauces. And then there’s Jollibee, the Philippines-founded fast food chain on course for global domination (its first UK-based branch opened in London last year). Jolibee is famous for its burgers, but there are plenty of local dishes on the menu, including halo halo – a dessert made with crushed ice and sweetened beans. Other Manila specialities include buko pie (a coconut-filled pastry) and kinilaw (a ceviche-like dish).

Where to stay in Manila

Manila’s best hotels are in Makati, which is Manila’s central business district. This is where you’ll find the Peninsula Manila , a palatial, five-star property famed for its fantastic customer service. Guests are whisked away to a dedicated check-in room (complete with bar) on arrival, and the lush gardens make it easy to forget you’re in the heart of one of Asia’s largest cities. Other great bases include Intramuros, which has a number of independent, family-friendly hotels like the Bayview Park Hotel Manila . There’s also Quezon City, which is part of the larger Metro Manila area and a popular backpacker area with a great range of accommodation, from the budget-friendly BGC Hostel and Dorm to the Royale Parc Inn & Suites .

A quick note – don’t be surprised to find heavy security outside most of Manila’s top hotels. As a rule, most four and five-star hotels have security guards and X-ray machines at the entrance.

Where to shop

Filipinos love to shop, which explains the abundance of sprawling, sleek malls which have sprung up in recent years. One of the largest is the Greenbelt - a temple to retail which has its own church, theatre and cinema. Beautifully landscaped parks between the separate buildings (it’s divided into five individual malls) provide welcome opportunities to rest weary feet. For something more traditional, head to Silahis Arts & Artifacts in Intramuros. Part-museum, part-shop, this is where to come for locally-made souvenirs, such as ceramics, paintings and sculptures.

Climate overview

The Philippines has a tropical climate, with high humidity and average temperatures around 27°C (81°F) throughout the year. The country experiences two distinct seasons: the rainy season (June to November) and the dry season (December to May). The dry season is the best time to visit for beach activities and outdoor adventures, as the weather is relatively cooler with less rainfall.

Peak Season and Off-Peak Season

The peak tourist season in the Philippines falls between December and April, when the weather is dry and ideal for outdoor activities. During this time, popular destinations like Boracay, Palawan, and Siargao can get crowded, and accommodation rates may be higher than usual. To avoid last-minute hassles, plan ahead and book your accommodations and flights early. If you’re traveling during the peak season, book activities and tours in advance and consider visiting lesser-known destinations for a more authentic experience with fewer crowds.

Cheapest Time to Fly to the Philippines

The cheapest month to fly to the Philippines is typically September, during the rainy season. Airlines may offer lower prices to attract travelers during this time. However, keep in mind that the rainy season can affect travel plans, so check weather forecasts and plan accordingly. Other months that may offer cheaper flights include May and October. Booking your flights at least 2-3 months in advance can help you secure the best rates.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MANILA

Manila climate.

The dry season is unquestionably the best time to visit Manila . Because Manila is totally within the tropics, it has a tropical savanna climate that is hot, especially during the day, and has very high humidity levels all year. Temperatures rarely drop below 20°C and hardly ever rise over 35°C, indicating that the temperature range is narrow . When planning a vacation to Manila, travellers should take into account the typhoon season , as well as the dry and wet seasons .

Late december to april – the best time to visit manila for all activities (dry / hot season).

Manila’s dry season runs from late December until mid-April . The weather is pleasant during the cooler months of December to February, with average temperatures ranging from 25 °C to 31 °C, and slightly hotter between March and April , with temperatures averaging 32 °C. May is frequently the hottest month, with temperatures occasionally reaching 35 °C. To be more specific, the months of January to early April are generally considered to be the best months to visit Manila , while the months of December and end April do have some rain.

Despite the occasional rain in December, Manila’s peak season begins in December and lasts until February . This is because the majority of visitors and locals will be celebrating Christmas and New Year. Most prominently, the city hosts the “ Procession of the Feast of the Black Nazarene “ , which attracts millions of Catholic worshippers every January 9.

May to November – The Best Time To Visit Manila For Budget Travelers & Backpackers (Rainy & Low Season)

The rainy season also the low season lasts from May to November , with temperatures ranging from 25 °C to 30 °C, and typhoons frequently strike between June and September . As previously stated, May is the warmest month of the year, with August being the wettest.

Despite the fact that these are the rainiest months of the year, it rarely rains all day. When it rains, the downpour is incredibly heavy but only lasts for a short period of time. However, it may result in flooding in a certain area of the city or its neighborhood. Due to its short heavy downpours that are always interspersed by plenty of sunshine, many people still insist on visiting Manila during the rainy season since it is the best time to find cheaper hotels and less congested.

Manila Weather

Best time to visit manila.

Manila weather generally comes in 2 distinct seasons, thanks to the tropical monsoon climate. It’s dry from December to May and wet from June to November. The average yearly temperature in Manila is around 27°C, while the average yearly rainfall reaches around 2,000 mm.

The tropical monsoon climate in a big city does make for quite a humid and sticky environment. Even so, as Manila is located close to the sea, it gets a nice sea breeze to help take the edge off the high temperatures and high humidity. Even so, be sure to pack lightweight, breathable clothes, particularly for the wet season.

Best time to visit Manila

Even though the dry season lasts from December to May, the best time to visit Manila is from January to April. During these 4 months, average temperatures stay around 27°C, with a minimum of 22°C, and a maximum of 34°C. Rainfall is rare, with an average maximum of only about 6 rainy days per month at this time of the year.

December and May, at the edges of the dry season, can also be good times to visit but don’t quite cut it as the best. December tends to be very humid while May is generally uncomfortably hot.

The wet season in Manila

The wet season in Manila, from June to November, is not a very pleasant time to visit the city. Even though rain doesn’t fall permanently, the city becomes humid – very humid! Flooding is also not unusual in certain streets and, in some cases, entire neighborhoods. The Philippines is regularly battered by cyclones every year, and Manila receive its share of strong wings at this time of year, too.

Fortunately, on the bright side, temperatures rarely (if ever) fall under 20°C, even during the wettest months of the year – August and September. So, if you decide to visit Manila during low season, you can safely leave your cold-weather clothes behind. Just do not forget your raincoat!

And while there isn’t an abundance of touristy sites to see, the city is packed with delicious restaurants, lively bars, and world-class shopping.

It’s worth spending at least a few days in this bustling city before heading to the other islands (like Palawan , Cebu , & Siquijor ) for your relaxing beach vacation.

Check our list of the top things to do in Manila, as well as where to eat, where to stay, and where to drink. Enjoy!

The Top 10 Things to Do in Manila, Philippines

1. explore the “walled city”.

Top Things to Do in Manila, Philippines: Manila Guide: Jeepney in Intramuros, Maila, Philippines

The Intramuros neighborhood also called the “Walled City”, is the most photogenic part of Manila. The defensive walls were constructed by the Spanish colonizers in the late 16th century to protect from invasion and it was guarded by Fort Santiago . The area was destroyed by the Battle of Manila in 1945 and in more recent years, the government has worked to rebuild and preserve the remaining landmarks.

You can hire a tricycle driver and get a 30-minute tour and history lesson of the area. Highlights of Intramuros beyond Fort Santiago include the San Augustin Church , the Baluarte de San Diego, and the statue of King Philip II of Spain (the namesake of the Philippines).

2. Lounge in Rizal Park

Just north of Intramuros is a favorite local hangout, Rizal Park . The park is named in honor of José Rizal whose writings helped to inspire the Philippine Revolution against the Spanish before he was executed here. The park is a perfect place to enjoy a leisurely afternoon stroll. A tranquil Chinese Garden is in the park as well.

And south of Intramuros you’ll find Binondo , the world’s oldest Chinatown. There’s a church that’s worth visiting, delicious restaurants, and some quirky Chinese shops and markets.

3. Shop at the Cubao Expo

Top Things to Do in Manila, Philippines: Manila Guide: Cubao Expo Entrance

Cubao Expo is the hipster area of Manila. It is just a few blocks in size and has boutiques, antique shops, record stores, restaurants, and bars. It gets really busy at night with trendy locals vying for the outdoor tables to sip their craft beers and socialize. Get there around 7:00 pm if you want some time to peruse the shops but expect a long drive in heavy traffic from the Makati neighborhood.

4. Visit the Quezon City Memorial Circle

The area surrounding the Quezon City Memorial Circle is another great area for eating and drinking. You’ll find jazz bars, comedy shows, and karaoke bars in the South Triangle area. The Memorial Circle is also just a nice area to stretch your legs a bit.

5. Take a Walking Tour of Makati

The Makati neighborhood is the best place in the city to stay. It is up-and-coming but you can still find hotels, restaurants, and shopping to fit any budget. Most of our recommendations here are concentrated in the Makati neighborhood.

It’s a great neighborhood to wander around, stopping into the cute boutiques and quaint coffee shops when you want to escape the heat. We spent most of our time eating, drinking, and enjoying Makati.

Fort Bonifacio Global City  is a pedestrian-friendly neighborhood located southeast of Makati. The streets are lined with trees, there are security guards sprinkled throughout, and it’s filled with restaurants and high-end shops.

6. Take a Day Trip from Manila

There are some incredibly cool places within a few hours of Manila. Once you have had your fill of the city make sure you check out some of these cool nearby spots:

Taal Volcano : Taal Volcano is by far the best day trip you can take from Manila (it’s actually one of the top activities in the Philippines). It’s a gigantic volcanic crater lake with a volcano cone in the center which contains a second lake. It’s about 2.5 hours south of Manila.

The easiest way to visit is by booking an organized tour but you can save money on a trip to Taal Volcano by just taking local transportation. And if you want the best photos to try sticking around for the night so you can experience sunset and sunrise!

  • Hulugan Falls and Cavinti Falls : If you’re in a waterfall chasing mood then head southwest for ~3 hours to check out these two.
  • Lake Pinatubo : This unbelievably photogenic crater lake was formed after the eruption of Mount Pinatubo in 1991. At about 2,000′ deep it’s the deepest lake in the Philippines. It’s located about 56 miles north of Manila.

7. Go on a Slum Tour

Smokey Tours offers several interesting tours of Manila, including a cemetery tour (where some locals have chosen to take up residence), a slum tour, a market tour, and a bicycle tour. The guides are very knowledgeable and will provide you with plenty of information about the areas you’ll be visiting.

8. Dine on the Delectable Cuisine

The food in Manila is out-of-this-world and you’d be doing yourself a disservice not to eat all of it! Check out our recommendations below of what to eat in Manila for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

The Kismet Cafe  ($$) is a darling little coffee shop in the Makati neighborhood. They have only a small menu but it’s perfect if you’re looking for a healthy alternative to the pork belly that is in so many dishes in the Philippines . They only offer vegetarian and vegan options. The jalapeño grilled cheese with tomato soup is a must-try!

Corner Tree Cafe ($$$) is another small restaurant in Makati offering fresh, wholesome ingredients. The food takes a little while to prepare but it’s well worth the wait. Try the spinach and mushroom lasagna and the sweet potato fries!

Hummus Elijah ($) serves up hearty portions of reasonably priced middle eastern delights. They have several hummus flavors to choose from, including mushroom and pine nuts, that is oh so delicious.

Ilustrado ($$) is a great stop for lunch while touring around the Intramuros area of Manila. They have a large cafe menu and their sandwiches and sliders are delicious.

Wooden Spoon ($$$) is located in the Power Plant Mall which is an upscale shopping area. They specialize in Filipino food but put their own spin on common dishes. The Crab Pancit appetizer is rich and delicious and a must-order! The Stuffed Pechay is cabbage leaves stuffed with minced pork and covered in a savory cream sauce that is out of this world.

Top Things to Do in Manila, Philippines: What to Eat in Manila: Pork Adobo at Wooden Spoon, Manila, Philippines

El Chupacabra ($$) is a popular Mexican restaurant for locals and foreigners alike. They have excellent nightly happy hour drink specials and a giant plate of cheesy, delicious nachos. You can’t go wrong with anything you order here!

Barrio Fiesta ($$) serves up traditional Filipino dishes that are spiced and cooked to perfection. The Lechon Kawali is splendid and they are known for their large helpings of Kare Kare.

Best Food to Eat in the Philippines: Kare Kare

9. Experience the Nightlife

Manila has quite the nightlife scene and you’ll find plenty of late-night bars no matter what neighborhood you find yourself in.

  • Nightclub – Valkyrie is a popular nightclub with both locals and ex-pats. The dance floor is small but it’s full of people having a great time. Expect to be held to a dress code and to pay a cover charge.
  • Karaoke – Center Stage has a few locations, including one in Makati. There is an hourly rate for a room but it is consumable (meaning that you must spend a certain amount of money per hour on food and drinks). You’ll get a huge selection of songs and can belt them out in the privacy of your own room.
  • Rooftop Views – Antidote is on the top floor of the I’m Hotel in the Makati neighborhood. Not only do they offer spectacular views of the city but also have lit-up aquariums filled with jellyfish as a backdrop for the bar. They have funky cocktails that aren’t expensive as you might expect and it’s the perfect spot to watch sunset.

Top Things to Do in Manila, Philippines: Where to Drink in Manila: Antidote Rooftop Bar in Makati, Manila, Philippines

  • Live Music – Strumm’s is a fun venue for an older crowd (the 30s, 40s, and 50s). They have lively bands and a great vibe. Expect to pay a cover but it’s consumable. Another great option for live music is  Hobbit House,  a quirky, hobbit-themed bar near Rizal Park.
  • Cocktails – If you’re in the mood for a fancy cocktail then you’re in luck!  A slew of speakeasy-style bars has opened up in Manila serving well-crafted adult libations. The Blind Pig has been around the longest and pioneered the Manila cocktail scene.   Alcohol by Volume (ABV) is the most popular bar at the moment.
  • Sports Bar – There are several lively sports bars in the Makati neighborhood. Check out H&J Sports Bar and Restaurant  if you’re looking to catch an NBA game or soccer match.

10. Shop Til You Drop

The SM Mall of Asia is located right on Manila Bay and is the 12th largest shopping mall in the world. This massive complex isn’t just reserved for shops and restaurants. It also boasts the first-ever IMAX theater in the country, an Olympic-sized ice skating rink, a concert grounds, and an amusement park featuring 17 rides. You’ll need a full day to explore this behemoth mall!

Ayala Center is a large shopping mall complex located in the Makati neighborhood that contains several different malls (three of which are outlined below). You can find anything and everything you could ever want in this complex. However, the price points of the malls are quite different so you may want to concentrate your time on a specific one depending on your budget.

  • Greenbelt Mall – This mammoth mall contains five sections – Greenbelt 1 through Greenbelt 5 that all have different offerings. The Greenbelt 5 is the poshest of the five with stores, including Kate Spade, Rolex, and Seven for all Mankind. Greenbelt 3 has mid-priced shops such as American Eagle, Asics, and Diesel.
  • SM Makati – Located directly across the street from Greenbelt Mall but with less expensive stores including Forever 21 and H&M.
  • Glorietta – Also located next to SM and Greenbelt mall but this one has plenty of local Filipino brands like Folded and Hung on the bottom floor.

Power Plant Mall is located at the center of Rockwell Center, a fully contained “city within a city” built on 15-acres of land previously occupied by a thermal power plant. It consists of condominium towers, office buildings, restaurants, and, of course, the mall. The area has limited entrances so if you’re on foot it can be difficult to figure out how to get there. The shops are high-end and there are quite a few good dining options on the basement level including Wooden Spoon (described above).

Bonifacio High Street is an open-air shopping area in Bonifacio Global City (Fort BGC ). There are plenty of shops and restaurants to suit all tastes. It’s a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee in the sunshine while watching other happy shoppers wander by.

Manila Travel Basics

Know before you go.

  • At the time of writing, the conversion rate was 55.58 Philippine Pesos (PHP) to $1 USD. So if we say that something costs 250 PHP, that’s just under $5 USD.
  • Filipinos learn both English and Tagalog in school. You’re unlikely to encounter anyone who doesn’t speak English. If you want to try your hand at Tagalog, “salamat” is “thank you” and “po” is a polite ending to a sentence. So you would say “salamat po” or “nice to meet you po” or “excuse me po”.
  • You’ll be referred to as “sir” or “ma’am” by pretty much everyone you meet. It’s a sign of respect and Filipinos are very polite.
  • Filipinos LOVE basketball and especially the NBA. If they ask where you’re from, it’s easier to say “do you know the Portland Trailblazers?” than “I’m from Oregon”. They definitely know the Blazers but have no idea what Oregon is.
  • Manila is the world’s most densely populated city so expect traffic to be horrendous, especially during rush hour!

Getting Around Manila

You’ll find plenty of car taxis around Manila that you can hail at any time. There are also many “habal-habal” stands if you’d prefer to take a motor taxi. If you want an entertaining but crowded experience, hop in a Jeepney but be sure to holler when you want to get off.

Top Things to Do in Manila, Philippines: Manila Guide: What To Do in Manila: Ride a Jeepney

The easiest form of transportation in Manila is Grab. It’s similar to Uber but you can choose to pay the driver in cash or you can connect your credit card and make it a cash-less experience. Keep in mind that you’ll probably wait at least 10 minutes for your driver to arrive and the estimated price does not include any tolls.

What to Pack for Manila

Manila is a metropolitan city and you’ll find plenty of name-brand stores in the more upscale areas of the city. While some countries in Asia can be quite conservative, the Philippines seems to be free to dress as they please. No need to cover your knees or shoulders anywhere here. However, if you choose to visit a fancy restaurant or nightclub, you’ll likely need to adhere to the dress code. This typically means no shorts, tank tops, or sandals.

Read all about what to pack for your trip here!

Safety in Manila

As with all large cities, opportunistic crime can be common, especially at night. Women should refrain from walking alone at night and should hold onto their bags as motorbikes can be known to grab them as they drive by. Keep a tight hold on your cell phone as well. Pickpockets are a problem in crowded areas as well. Keep extra money and any expensive jewelry locked in your room safe, just in case.

Although, the biggest danger in Manila is singing a poor karaoke rendition of My Way .

Weather in Manila

You are likely accustomed to enjoying four yearly seasons – summer, winter, spring, and fall. The Philippines only has two – wet and dry. Wet season lasts from June until October and dry season is November through May. If you visit during the wet season, you can expect to experience the occasional daily torrential downpour.

The temperature year-round is hot, but the hottest months of the year are April and May when temperatures average around 34 °C.

Visa and Passport Requirements for the Philippines

Most countries in the world do not require a visa for a 30-day stay in the Philippines (a few exceptions include India, Iran, Jordan, and a few others). Check your visa requirements here . Be sure to purchase your return flight to your next destination prior to arriving at the airport or you may be denied boarding (as there is no option to exit by land crossing).

Where to Stay in Manila

Manila is a huge city so deciding where to book your hotel can be challenging. The Makati neighborhood is an up-and-coming area that is full of great restaurants and fantastic shopping. Most of the places that we recommend here are in the Makati area. You may find that you’ll be less excited to check out some of the other areas of the city because traffic is so congested, and Makati offers everything you need within walking distance!

Here are a few of our favorite spots to stay in Makati:

16 TOP Things to Do in Manila Philippines [2024]

M anila, the massive, loud, chaotic capital city of the Philippines. Most folks only stop in Manila for a short layover prior to jetting off to another island. The city is hard to love at first look; traffic is bad, the size is unmanageable, and costs are higher than elsewhere.

But Manila has a lot of charm and even some nice areas with historical sites. And good food too. We help break down some of the best things to do in Manila that any first-time visitor should do in town.

Take a Carriage Ride around Intramuros

Intramuros, meaning “within the walls” is the historic district in old Manila. It is the oldest district in the city and the one most representative of the Spanish colonial timeframe. The area was founded in 1571 on an old Spanish settlement in the region.

For those visiting Manila, you’ll spend much of the history exploring time in Intramuros. Many of the sites below are located in this district. There are many ways to get around, but our favorite is a carriage ride.

You’ll see the horse-drawn carriage drivers make their rounds through the area. Discuss the cost (usually per hour) and the sites you’ll visit with them. This is the perfect way to get into your time in the district.

Mind Museum

The Mind Museum is a world-class science museum in Manila, Philippines. It is renowned for its interactive exhibits and engaging educational experiences. The museum is situated in the Bonifacio Global City and spans over 5,000 square meters. Opened in 2012, the museum has five main galleries: Atom, Life, Earth, Universe, and Technology. Each gallery offers a unique exploration of different scientific concepts, ranging from the smallest particles to the vastness of the cosmos.

Visitors can explore interactive displays, such as a life-size model of the Tyrannosaurus rex skeleton and a simulated journey through space. The museum features hands-on exhibits that allow visitors to conduct experiments, learn about biodiversity, and understand the principles of physics and technology.

The museum also regularly hosts educational programs, workshops, and events with interactive and fun ways to learn about science.

San Agustin Church

San Agustin Church is a historic landmark and UNESCO World Heritage Site in the heart of Manila, Philippines. Completed in 1607, it is not only the oldest stone church in the Philippines but also one of the few structures in Manila to survive the destruction of World War II.

The Spanish colonial-style architecture features intricate carvings, ornate facades, and baroque elements. Thankfully, we can still experience the church, given its massive stone walls, which have withstood centuries of earthquakes and natural disasters.

The church houses religious artworks, including intricately designed altars, ornate ceilings, and beautiful stained-glass windows. The highlight is its painted frescoes depicting scenes from the life of St. Augustine and other biblical themes.

The church is open daily for worshipers and visitors. Dates and times can change due to holidays and other special events.

San Agustin Museum

Located in the church’s compound, the San Agustin Museum is a trove of historical and culturally significant religious artifacts. The museum is housed in what was the monastery of the Augustinian friars.

The museum houses a collection of religious art, colonial-era furniture, ivory sculptures, ecclesiastical vestments, and artifacts dating back to the Spanish colonial period. It includes ancient manuscripts, religious relics, and intricately carved Santos (religious statues).

The most interesting part is the beautiful, well-preserved cloisters, courtyards, and rooms that offer a glimpse into the daily life of the former Augustinian friars. These are almost better than the actual exhibits themselves.

The museum is open daily but is subject to closing during special events or other holidays.

What surprised me is that Chinatown (known locally as “Binondo”) is one of the oldest Chinatowns in the world! Established in 1594, it is even older than the city of Manila. As most know, this area was founded pre-Spain and was a Muslim settlement at the time of Spanish founding.

The streets of Chinatown are like many Chinatowns around the world. With a lovely entrance gate and of course bustling streets of shops, vendors, and restaurants. And the food, that’s the main draw I think for most folks coming into this area. You’ll find traditional Chinese foods as well as great Filipino-Chinese fusion. Be sure to check out Binondo Church, one of the oldest in the country.

Fort Santiago

Built in the 16th century, Fort Santiago was an important fortress used to repel invasions during the Spanish Colonial period. Of course invasions that were not the Spanish themselves. Visitors can explore its well-preserved ruins, ramparts, and dungeons, which offer glimpses into its storied past. One of its most notable features is the Baluarte de San Diego, a bastion that offers panoramic views of Manila Bay.

Be sure to check out the dungeon area, too. It is an interesting display with some graphic displays that discuss its use as a dungeon, especially during WWII. Also, stop and see the Rizal statue, which honors the National Hero José Rizal, a doctor martyred for resisting Spanish rule.

Open Daily. ₱75 per person. Make sure you have small bills. They refused us originally because they couldn’t break larger bills.

Manila Cathedral

The Manila Cathedral, established in 1571, has undergone several reconstructions. The current structure, completed in 1958, showcases a blend of Romanesque Revival and Neo-Romanesque architectural styles.

Visitors can explore the stunning interior, adorned with intricate stained-glass windows, ornate altars, and stately domes. The cathedral’s main altar is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception. Admission is free (donations welcome), and visitors can attend religious services.

Guided tours are available to learn about the cathedral’s rich history, architectural significance, and role in shaping Philippine culture. Cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions are also hosted, providing visitors with opportunities to experience its vibrant community.

Also known as Luneta Park, the beautiful urban Rizal Park is an important site to explore and spend some time. It’s mostly important as the execution site of the martyr Dr. Jose Rizal. Be sure to explore the execution site, which has a beautiful memorial to the Doctor. I found it important to read and learn about his life and work.

Among the activities in the park are enjoying the fountains and lawns. Exploring the Chinese and Japanese Gardens, Orchidarium, and Butterfly Pavilion. There are also spots for exercise, children’s playgrounds, and lawns to picnic and relax. I also found it cool that point zero is in the park; where all distances in the Philippines are measured.

Admission to Rizal Park is free and open daily from dawn until midnight. There are often events, concerts, and festivals in the park.

Baluartes in Intramuros

Surrounding Intramuros is a series of defensive structures called Baluartes built during the Spanish colonial period. These were primarily built to fend off any [other] foreign invaders into the Philippine islands.

There are several different bastions you can visit around the Intramuros, as these make up the walls of this neighborhood. Admission is free, although there are occasionally fees for specific exhibits.

Each Baluarte within Intramuros boasts unique architectural features and historical significance. Some have been transformed into museums or cultural centers that exhibit Philippine history, heritage, and the Spanish colonial era. Others remain open-air spaces where visitors enjoy panoramic views of Intramuros and its surrounding areas.

Be sure to check the views from here, too. I found some of those with the best views over the city. You can also look down on some parks, historical barracks, and even a golf course. Adjacent to one of them are various statues of the presidents of the Philippines, which is interesting to see.

Casa Manila

If you are looking for something that truly shows old Manila, Casa Manila is the perfect place to visit. Located in Intramuros, Casa Manila is a meticulously reconstructed 19th-century colonial house that offers a view into the upper Filipino echelon during Spanish rule.

Casa Manila is where visitors can explore meticulously restored interiors, furnished with period-appropriate furniture, decor, and artworks. It showcases several rooms, including a sala (living room), comedor (dining room), cocina (kitchen), and dormitorio (bedroom).

Admission does require a small fee. You can also view some areas of the courtyard without paying for admission. Guided tours are also available. It’s a perfect stop for an hour or more along your exploration of Intramuros.

The Roof of the Bayleaf Hotel

Located in the heart of Intramuros, the Bayleaf is one of the best hotels in this area of the city. But even if you are not staying here, the rooftop should not be missed. The views from the balconies give you an incredible 360° view over Intramuros. During the evenings the rooftop is a restaurant/bar so visiting in the evenings is possible, too.

It didn’t seem an issue for us to come in and view the rooftop even as non-guests during the day. The carriage driver’s son basically just led us into the hotel. The staff were friendly and aware of what we were doing. You’ll need to be a guest at the lounge bar at night.

BGC Downtown

Bonifacio Global City is one of the newest areas of Manila. It feels like a city within a city and maybe a bit of a bubble. But the area is nice, with a pedestrian high street, lots of shopping, and good restaurants. I like that many places here stay open later than elsewhere in the city.

We also recently celebrated New Year’s with folks gathering in a park-area outside of a mall. There was a concert as well and there are often events in this part of Manila. Even though it felt touristy, I found the area full of locals. While it doesn’t have the historical significance of downtown, it does feel lively with Filipinos going about their days and evenings.

Some of the nicest hotels in the city are in this area, too. It’s a good area to stay but does feel far from the historical sites.

Venice Grand Canal Mall

It’s kitschy, but the Venice Grand Canal Mall is actually pretty nice.  The main attraction is the canal that runs through the mall. Most of the restaurants you’ll find here line the canal area and offer visitors the ability to sit, relax, and people-watch. There are plenty of shops too although they tend to be indoors around the canal area.

There’s also a small plaza that has pigeon feeding. We didn’t engage in feeding the pigeons or the small train around the plaza. But we did shop at the various stalls that lined this area, too. While I don’t think it’s necessarily my top spot in Manila. But it is a nice area to get some food, shop, and people-watch.

National Museum of Natural History

Located within Rizal Park, the National Museum of Natural History showcases the country’s rich biodiversity and natural history. Opened in 2018, the impressive facility is built within a historic renovated neoclassical building, formerly the Department of Tourism.

Visitors can explore diverse exhibits on Philippine natural history, including geology, botany, zoology, and paleontology. The museum’s centerpiece is the “Tree of Life,” a multi-story structure focusing on all living organisms’ interconnectedness.

Overall, you can spend hours exploring the various interactive displays, exhibits, and presentations on the impressive natural diversity of the Philippines. Entrance is free, which makes it even better.

Ride on a Jeepney

There’s no more of a symbol of the Philippines than the ubiquitous Jeepney. These beautifully decorated vehicles can be seen throughout the islands taking visitors from place to place for reasonable fare.

Jeepneys were created in post-war Philippines as a cheap and efficient mode of transportation. Surplus jeeps were modified with elongated roofs, bench seats, and Filipino cultural elements, resulting in an iconic symbol of Philippine heritage.

These days you still seem them throughout the islands. But from everyone I talked to, it seemed that with modern changes and focus on sustainable transportation the days of Jeepneys may be coming to a close. While there’s no specific date, if that is true, this cultural icon will likely be relegated to museums, food trucks, and tourist circuits.

So while you can, try to visit and ride a Jeepney as it was meant to be. Take a trip locally and experience not just an incredible vehicle, but a way to get connected with how locals travel.

Where to Stay in Manila

There’s no shortage of places to stay in Manila. We try to break down some of our favorite places in the city to stay. I’d also love to get any recommendations from readers. Always Looking for new spots to check out when I return.

  • Manila Westin : Ortigas: This was the nicest place I stayed in Manila and one of the nicest rooms I’ve ever had. I lucked out getting upgraded to a suite when my room wasn’t ready (I also have lifetime Marriott status, though). Service and cleanliness are impeccable.
  • Ascott BGC : BGC: Great hotel in the center of Bonifacio Global City. I like its proximity to the BGC High Street and restaurants and the mind museum.
  • Bayleaf : Intramuros: I love the location of this hotel in the heart of Intramuros. It also has a beautiful rooftop, which is one of our top things to do. Clean, great service, and just perfect for out the door exploring.
  • F1 Hotel : BGC: More affordable than the adjacent hotels in BGC. Good rooms and a tasty breakfast buffet.

Getting Around

For us, the easiest way to get around Manila was the app GrabTaxi [ iOS | Android ]. The app does a good job of calling taxis and private cars to pick you up and take you anywhere.

The app is easy to download and you. One tip I learned is that if you cannot find a taxi available, check again selecting “cash payment”. Some taxis don’t accept payment from Grab collected via credit card.
