TORONTO — Sunwing has updated its Worry Free insurance offerings to provide travellers with added peace of mind heading into the winter season.

The tour operator is now offering clients Worry Free Plus, a new coverage option, which “offers more flexibility for last-minute changes, including the option to transfer their package,” says Andrew Dawson, President of Tour Operations for Sunwing, who adds that demand for winter and holiday travel is at its peak. “Plus, customers can opt for added security by adding Manulife Global Travel Insurance’s medical and quarantine coverage to either Worry Free option for even greater peace of mind when travelling this winter.”

Clients who book their getaways from Sept. 19, 2022 onward will continue to have the option to purchase Sunwing’s Worry Free plan for $49, which offers one change to their vacation package or cancel altogether up to three days before departure. The new Worry Free Plus plan is available for $99, an upgraded coverage option that allows them to make one change, including the ability to transfer their package up to seven days before departure, or cancel their vacation package up to three hours before departure.

For added travel security, clients can purchase the Manulife Global Travel Insurance + Worry Free, or Manulife Global Travel Insurance + Worry Free Plus plans, starting from $99 and $149, respectively. With these plans clients will enjoy the same benefits of Sunwing’s Worry Free coverage options, plus emergency medical coverage, quarantine coverage for fully vaccinated passengers, unlimited trip interruption coverage following departure, including baggage loss, damage and delay, plus flight and travel accident insurance.

Worry Free refunds will be paid as a Sunwing travel voucher when purchased within 48 hours of booking. Clients who purchased Worry Free through their travel agents prior to Sept. 19, 2022, for travel from this date onward, can rest assured knowing their insurance coverage will not change but will be automatically upgraded to Worry Free Plus. No action is required from agents.

Sunwing is giving all Canadians more choice this winter, including the Manulife Pandemic Travel Plan for as low as $4 per day, with emergency medical coverage and quarantine expenses for travellers and fully vaccinated cruise vacationers in the unlikely event they contract COVID-19 on their getaways.

manulife global travel insurance worry free

I booked an all inclusive vacation to mexico for myself and my girlfriend through Itravel2000 from December 14-21, 2021, and bought the comprehensive all travel insurance through Manulife for herself and I. Unfortunately, my gf's brother passed away 9 days before our travel, and we had to cancel our trip 6 days before it. I contacted sunwing on December 8th, and they confirmed cancelling the vacation on December 9th, 2021. I had sent one claim application with all of our documents and the death certificate and cancellation invoice from Itravel2000, and requested a different cancellation invoice. I contacted the Sunwing agent, and requested an updated client statement proof of cancellation, and sent it again to this company, and they emailed me again today indicating they don't have:

Name of passengers who cancelled

Date of cancellation

Amount refunded (if any and whom the refund was made to)

Future credit on file (if any offered) and expiration date.

I called them today and went through the whole package I sent them that has all the information they need, and the admin says that they need sunwing cancellation invoice, and not the itravel2000 one.

This is unfair to claimants who are already going through rough times with death of family member. Last thing we need is a company jerking us around to not pay us.

I am sorry for your loss. Yes, insurance companies do their best to keep their money. They are just a business, empathy and sympathy don't figure into their processing a claim. Did you keep a copy of the sunwing cancellation invoice so you can send it again? It you are due a refund (any reason coverage doesn't always mean what we thing is covered is covered) you have to submit what they request, frustrating as the process is. I think most hope people give up. Keep after anything you are due. Hopefully you can plan another successful trip.

Thanks for your kind words. I have contacted the travel rep from Sunwing/Itravel2000 multiple times, and she told me that the invoice she provided was suffice; she even revised it once and sent it again with the cancellation outlined in there.

This is just a new tactic that insurance companies are going with nowadays to prolong the claim process, and have people give up. I work for my sister's company who invoices different insurance companies every month for services and products provided to her clients, and some of the adjusters can take months to pay you after giving confirming funding approval, or they make you jump through hoops to get paid. I want other travelers to be aware to get Sunwing worry-free cancellation instead of Manulife's global coverage since the latter has been an exhausting and nerve-racking process for my girlfriend and I.

I'm not sure Sunwing would be any better, usually purchasing insurance from the same company you book travel with doesn't work out in your favor. Insurance of any kind is never worry-free that I have experienced. Again, good luck.

I have yet to see any of the cancel for any reason policies that paid 100%.. so far the best I have seen pays 80% , most are less. So you still lose money if you cancel.

I was skeptical about buying a cheap insurance premium. After making a small claim for an emergency clinic visit due to an allergic reaction, I submitted my documents but apparently, there were information that were still required. If I had not been persistent with calling this company about the status of my claim, it would have gone unanswered. This is my experience with this insurance company:

- they pointed fingers to each other - Global Excel and Manulife kept bouncing me back and forth saying it was the other company's responsibility to evaluate my claim

- no one contacted me to tell me there was missing information. No replies, no ETAs and their portal is very very basic

- they then tell me that they issued a cheque to me but the status of my claim online still said that it was in process. It's been 3 weeks and I'm still waiting for my reimbursement.

Ultimately, unless you have a lot of time to keep calling them and getting status on your claim, this is not a company i trust. I would not recommend getting this insurance in future. You can be stuck with out of pocket expenses for months if you don't follow up.

Having the same experience atm Alliance Insurance is the best. Global excel is terrible.

The same issues just don't happen in the UK insurance companies seem to be more intent with actually helping you.My daughter had a 50k bill in the Florida the insurance got billed direct and didn't ask us for anything else they just paid. Last year i had DVT whilst in Turkey I paid the bill myself posted it to the insurance company and money in account a few days later.

Global excel was completely useless. Air Canada lost our luggage and Global excel continually lost our claim forms. After resubmitting repeatedly we finally gave up.

Frequently asked questions

In some cases, you may be able to deduct travel insurance premiums from your gross income when it comes to tax time. In most situations, however, travel insurance costs are not deductible. Be sure to ask an accountant or financial advisor as to the status of these costs prior to making them, if a concern.

The cost of travel insurance is not a medical expense. It's a cost incurred to protect you when travelling against any unforeseen circumstance that leads to your incurring a cost to protect your health and well-being while on a trip away from home.

Travel insurance claims involve completing a form and submitting it to the insurance company you purchased the travel insurance from. The forms tend to be detailed and take a bit of time to complete.

All supporting documentation requested in the claim form must also accompany your submission. Incomplete claims are generally not accepted and will need to be redone before going through the claims review process.

Generally, costs you incur while away you pay for out-of-pocket. Then, you're reimbursed by the insurance company after you return home and submit a claim.

In some instances (e.g., hospital stays), another arrangement can be made. In those cases, travellers may call us to make a plan for covering the costs.

Travel insurance claims go through an adjudication process. If the policyholder provides everything the insurance company needs to determine the validity of the claim and verify the expenses, then the claim will be approved.

There’s nothing for the policyholder to do to get a claim approved. One can only ensure their claim is complete, that all questions are answered, and all supporting documentation provided when the claim is first submitted. Also, if the company has any outstanding questions, the policyholder should provide answers as soon as possible to expedite the claim verification process.

Family camping

Why is Travel Insurance important?

Travel insurance is important to help protect you, your family or visitors to Canada from costs that can occur due to an unforeseen medical emergency during a trip or an unexpected reason to cancel or interrupt a trip. Without it, travellers may be left to pay significant out of pocket expenses.

If you are looking for Single Trip Emergency Medical coverage, we have recently introduced a new plan that provides up to $5 Million for COVID-19 emergencies while travelling outside of Canada. See the COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan for more details.

Learn More About Our Plans

Travelling canadians.

The COVID-19 Pandemic Travel Plan is designed for Canadians  travelling outside of Canada.  It can help protect you against the cost of unexpected emergencies that may occur during your trip.

Scotia Travel Insurance for Travelling Canadians is designed for Canadians travelling out-of-province or outside Canada. It can help protect you against the cost of unexpected emergencies that may occur before or during your trip.

Your government health insurance plan may only cover a fraction of healthcare expenses incurred outside Canada, and may only provide limited coverage if you’re travelling in another province. Illness and accidents are all-too-common occurrences. Without travel insurance, a medical emergency or trip cancellation or trip interruption due to an emergency could be disruptive and leave you facing large unexpected expenses.

Visitors To Canada

Do you have family or friends coming to stay? Do they have health insurance to help protect them while they’re here? Are you visiting Canada and need health insurance while you are away from home?

When Visitors to Canada purchase Scotia Travel Insurance before leaving home they will have coverage during their uninterrupted flight to Canada.

The Student plan offers those who are studying away from home a smart and economical way to help protect themselves against the cost of emergency medical and basic healthcare expenses and more.

Plans are available for full-time:

  • International students studying in Canada or
  • Canadian students studying outside their home province or outside of Canada.

Family coverage is also available for immediate family members residing with the student.
