Mego Toys

Originally founded in 1954 by Dave Abrams, Marty Abrams, now commonly known as “the father of action figures”, took the helm of the company in 1971 and shifted the direction to licensed action figures.  He included the “World’s Greatest Super Hero’s “ line), celebrity dolls, and the Micronauts toy line. Mego became famous for their 8” scale figures with interchangeable bodies. Eventually this became an industry standard.

Mego Corporation re-launched in 2018 with a partnership between Marty Abrams and Joel Rosenzweig, focusing on 8” Action figures and launching with popular licenses from CBS, Warner Brothers, Sony and Epic.

FIRST LOOK: The ‘Mego’ STAR TREK ANIMATED Playset You’ve Waited Decades For

Posted By Dan Greenfield on May 3, 2020 | 4 comments

EXCLUSIVE: For when Filmation went where no man had gone before…

mego travel 2022

Hey, folks, get ready for a big run of playsets by The Toyroom, home of Anthony Durso’s cottage industry of on-the-money DIY displays perfectly scaled for your favorite Mego figures (or Mego-like, if you prefer).

Starting Monday, it’s gonna be an unofficial JUSTICE WEEK — with looks at five different sets for your Justice League, Justice Society, Super Friends, Super Powers and Legion of Doom faves. Great, great, groovy stuff.

But today, we wanted to squeeze in a brand-new, never-before-seen set by Anthony, who is also a regular 13th Dimension contributor: A Star Trek: The Animated Series Enterprise set.

mego travel 2022

“True Confession: I HATED Star Trek when I was a kid,” Anthony said. “While I was definitely into superheroes and cartoons in the early ’70s, Planet of the Apes was as sci-fi as I got. My hatred of all things Trek at the time probably stems from an older cousin. Occasionally we’d be invited to my aunt’s for dinner and couldn’t wait to eat in her den on TV trays. But our cousin had control of the TV and we couldn’t change the channel because he was watching Star Trek. Even after dinner while he was napping on the couch the same rules applied because he was “watching TV.”

So when Star Trek became all the rage in fifth grade (there were AMT models of the Enterprise bridge as well as the Enterprise itself orbiting next to a motorized module of the planets in our school library), I was the only boy that was uninterested. Well except for that lone kid who insisted that Space: 1999 was the superior show.

mego travel 2022

“But eventually, in the early ’80s, I gave Star Trek a chance again due to the combination of The Star Trek Compendium (thank you, Waldenbooks), Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan shown ad nauseum on HBO, and having to sit through the late night lineup of The Odd Couple, The Honeymooners and Star Trek on New York’s WPIX to get to The Twilight Zone, ” he added. “And although I wouldn’t consider myself a true Trekkie, I have enough working knowledge to hold my own.

mego travel 2022

“Between all of that is the Filmation Star Trek cartoon, which originally aired on NBC from 1973-74. I think I picked it up somewhere along the way in reruns, though, and I remember it being one of the last cartoons of the morning before things shifted to American Bandstand and Soul Train, so I watched it begrudgingly,” Anthony recalled. “And while some people aren’t sure whether or not the cartoon is ‘canon,’ to me it is. It’s that fourth and fifth season of the original five-year mission that we never got.

mego travel 2022

“Now Mego famously made a Star Trek Enterprise playset (complete with an ingenious transporter mechanism) in the ’70s that looked NOTHING LIKE the real thing,” Anthony continued. “With this (smaller) displayset, I wanted to go a different route and decided to adapt the Filmation bridge, with all of it’s brightly colored circles and square-shaped lights and buttons. Reference material was sourced from watching and freeze-framing episodes of the series.

mego travel 2022

“It could probably use some more in the way of furniture but you can either use original Mego chairs (as pictured below) or, with the advent of 3D printing, there are a few Mego customizers out there who provide such a service.”

mego travel 2022

A few thoughts:

— Anthony’s experience is nearly identical to my own. Didn’t like Trek as a kid — LOVE it as an adult. Particularly the Original Series . So this is like a baggie of M’Ress’ catnip.

— In addition to this display, The Toyroom’s sets currently include: The Fortress of Solitude ( click here for an INSIDE LOOK ), Lex Luthor’s Lair, the Batcave/Wayne Foundation ( click here ), the 1966 Batcave, the 1966 Batgirl apartment and changing room ( click here ), the Joker’s Ha-Hacienda ( click here ), the Riddler’s hideout ( click here ), Paradise Island, the Green Lantern HQ on Oa, Aquaman’s Aquacave ( click here ), Captain Marvel’s Rock of Eternity ( click here ), the JLA Satellite, the Justice Society’s brownstone, the Super Friends Hall of Justice, the Super Powers Hall of Justice, the Hall of Doom, Iron Man’s Armory ( click here ), the X-Men’s Danger Room ( click here ) and a Scooby-Doo haunted house — with more to come.

mego travel 2022

— And as I always feel compelled to point out, I don’t make anything off this. I just love showing it all off. Each set — including case, artwork and complete assembly — is $85 plus shipping. Contact either [email protected] or you can message Anthony, who also owns Retropolis Tees , through Facebook , Twitter or Instagram .

Affiliate links in post. See Disclosure Policy .

Mego has been delighting collectors with their super retro and nostalgic 50th Anniversary World’s Greatest Super Heroes Figures and at this year’s Power Con Mego Meet Panel, they revealed Wave 3! We have also discovered Wave 3 up for preorder on BBTS, but are shown as sold out. These new Mego figures are spectacular as I own most of the first two waves. Wave 1 included Superman, Batman, Robin, Aquaman, Green Lantern, Shazam, and Flash. Wave 2 consisted of Joker, Penguin, Riddler, Reverse Flash and Green Arrow! These 8″ figures have amazing high quality soft goods costumes just like the vintage Megos. And who could forget those hilarious but nostalgic plastic “oven mitts” for gloves! The artwork and packaging for these figures are exactly like the vintage original, from the artwork, to the Super Heroes logo, down to the exact color of the boxes, Mego hit it outta the park with these! So let’s take a look at the latest Wave 3 Mego 50th Anniversary World’s Greatest Super Heroes that were revealed at this year’s Mego Meet at Power Con 2023. The show a release date of first quarter 2024.

Wave 3 consists 8 new figures and they are some real of some deep cuts!

Firestorm is a superhero appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. The character was created by Gerry Conway and Al Milgrom and first appeared in Firestorm: The Nuclear Man #1 in 1978.

The original Firestorm is actually a fusion of two individuals: Ronnie Raymond, a high school student, and Professor Martin Stein, a nuclear physicist. When an accident occurred in a nuclear power plant, the two were caught in the blast and their molecules were merged together. This resulted in the creation of Firestorm, a being with the ability to manipulate and transmute matter at will.

Firestorm possesses a variety of powers, including the ability to fly, generate and project bursts of nuclear energy, create force fields, and rearrange atoms to change the substance and properties of objects. He is also capable of absorbing radiation, rendering him immune to most forms of harm and making him an exceptional powerhouse in battles.

The character has been a member of various superhero teams, including the Justice League and the Justice Society of America. Over the years, different individuals have taken on the mantle of Firestorm, with Ronnie Raymond and Martin Stein being the most recognized and prominent versions.

Firestorm has appeared not only in comic books but also in various adaptations such as animated TV shows, video games, and live-action series like “The Flash” and “Legends of Tomorrow.” The character’s popularity stems from its unique powerset, compelling origin story, and dynamic relationship between the two fused individuals.

Dr. Fate is a fictional superhero in the DC Comics universe. The character was created by writer Gardner Fox and artist Howard Sherman and first appeared in More Fun Comics #55 in 1940.

Dr. Fate is the alter ego of multiple characters throughout comic book history, but the most well-known version is Kent Nelson. Kent is the son of archaeologists who discovered an ancient tomb containing the helmet of Nabu, an ancient sorcerer from the planet Cilia. When his parents are killed, Kent becomes the apprentice to Nabu and learns the art of sorcery.

By donning the helmet of Nabu, Kent Nelson becomes Dr. Fate, a powerful sorcerer and defender of humanity. Dr. Fate possesses incredible magical abilities, including telepathy, telekinesis, flight, and the ability to cast spells. Dr. Fate’s costume is iconic, consisting of a golden helmet, a blue robe with golden accents, and a mysterious amulet.

As Dr. Fate, Kent Nelson fights against various supernatural and mystical threats to protect the Earth from evil. He is often seen as a member of the Justice Society of America, a team of superheroes that operates in the DC Comics universe.

Dr. Fate has appeared in numerous comic book series, including his own solo titles, as well as in animated TV shows and movies. He is known for his connection to the mystical side of the DC universe and is often depicted as a wise and powerful mystic.

Nightwing is a popular superhero character in the DC Comics universe. The character was created by writer Marv Wolfman and artist George Pérez. Nightwing is the alter ego of Dick Grayson, who was originally known as Robin, the sidekick of Batman.

Dick Grayson made his first appearance as Robin in Detective Comics #38 in 1940. He was the youngest member of the famed Flying Graysons, a family of trapeze artists. However, tragedy struck when his parents were murdered during a circus performance. Following their deaths, Bruce Wayne (Batman) took Dick under his wing, training him to become his crime-fighting partner and the original Robin.

As Robin, Dick fought alongside Batman for many years, contributing to their success in combating crime in Gotham City. Eventually, Grayson outgrew the Robin identity and sought to establish his own path as an independent hero. He took the name Nightwing, inspired by a Kryptonian myth, and chose a new blue and black costume.

As Nightwing, Dick Grayson moved to the neighboring city of Blüdhaven to begin his solo crime-fighting career. He distinguished himself as a skilled acrobat, detective, and martial artist, just like his mentor Batman. Nightwing became known for his resourcefulness, quick-thinking, and ability to utilize various gadgets and weapons.

Throughout his adventures, Nightwing has faced various villains, including his own rogues’ gallery, such as Blockbuster and Deathstroke. He has also joined several superhero teams, including the Teen Titans and the Justice League.

Nightwing’s character has undergone several changes and developments throughout the years. He has experienced personal growth, becoming a mentor and leader to younger heroes while maintaining a strong connection to Batman and the Bat Family. His relationships with other characters, including Barbara Gordon (the first Batgirl) and Starfire, have also been integral to his story.

Nightwing’s popularity has led to numerous comic book series and appearances in different forms of media. He has been featured in animated TV shows, movies, and video games, capturing the hearts of fans worldwide.

Mego 50th Anniversary Nightwing wave 18

Two-Face, also known as Harvey Dent, is a fictional character appearing in comic books published by DC Comics. He first appeared in Detective Comics #66 in 1942 and is one of Batman’s most iconic and enduring adversaries.

Harvey Dent started as Gotham City’s District Attorney and a close friend of Bruce Wayne (Batman’s alter ego). However, after being disfigured during a trial by a criminal named Sal Maroni, Dent’s psyche fractured, creating his alter ego, Two-Face. This alter ego reflects Dent’s dual nature, representing the struggle between his good and evil sides.

Two-Face’s defining characteristic is his obsession with duality. He often uses a coin as a decision-making tool, with one side representing good and the other representing evil. This impacts his actions and leads to his unpredictable behavior. He is driven by a warped sense of justice, often resorting to criminal activities to pursue his own form of vigilante justice.

Two-Face is known for his distinctive appearance, with one side of his face horribly scarred and disfigured while the other side remains untouched. This visually represents his duality and creates a striking and memorable image.

Over the years, Two-Face has been a significant villain in Batman’s rogues’ gallery, appearing in various comic book storylines, animated adaptations, and live-action films. He is a complex character who explores themes of identity, morality, and the thin line between good and evil.

Mego 50th Anniversary Two Face wave 18

Bizarro Superman, also known as Bizarro, is a fictional character in DC Comics. He first appeared in the comic book title Superboy #68 in October 1958. Bizarro is considered to be a twisted, flawed version of Superman and serves as his imperfect duplicate.

The origin story of Bizarro varies throughout different versions of DC Comics. However, the most common origin portrays Bizarro as a failed cloning experiment gone wrong. He is created by Lex Luthor or other villains using Superman’s DNA or the remnants of Kryptonian technology.

Bizarro possesses a variety of unique characteristics that differentiate him from the real Superman. Physically, he has distorted features, pale or grayish skin, and a hunched posture. His powers are also twisted versions of Superman’s abilities. For example, his cold breath produces fire, and his heat vision creates ice.

One of the defining traits of Bizarro is his reversed speech and logic. He often speaks in a broken, distorted manner, using phrases like “me am Bizarro #1” instead of “I am Bizarro #1.” Additionally, Bizarro’s actions are driven by an inverted moral code, causing him to do the opposite of what Superman would typically do. This results in unconventional and often chaotic behavior.

While Bizarro is typically portrayed as a villain, his motivations and actions can be inconsistent. Sometimes, he acts with good intentions but due to his flawed perspective, ends up causing unintentional chaos and destruction. In certain storylines, Bizarro has even displayed acts of heroism, albeit in his own distorted way.

Bizarro has been featured in various DC Comics publications, including his own comic book series titled “Tales of the Bizarro World” and appearances in Superman-related titles. He has also appeared in animated adaptations, TV shows, and movies, gaining a significant fan following for his peculiar and offbeat nature.

Overall, Bizarro Superman is a unique and intriguing character in the DC Comics universe, offering a twisted alternate take on the legendary Man of Steel.

Mego 50th Anniversary Bizzaro wave 18

Brainiac is a supervillain character in the DC Comics universe. He was created by Otto Binder and Al Plastino and first appeared in Action Comics #242 in 1958. Brainiac is primarily known as one of Superman’s greatest adversaries.

Brainiac is an extraterrestrial android with an advanced intellect and immense knowledge. He is often depicted as a green-skinned humanoid with cybernetic enhancements and a high-tech spacecraft known as the Skull Ship. Brainiac’s main goal is to collect and preserve the knowledge of various worlds before destroying them. He primarily targets civilizations with advanced technology and uses his advanced tools to shrink and bottle entire cities as part of his collection.

Throughout his comic book history, Brainiac has undergone various interpretations and versions. In some storylines, he is portrayed as an artificial intelligence created by the Coluans, an alien race dedicated to accumulating knowledge. In others, he is shown as a being from the planet Colu who possesses advanced technology and immense mental capabilities.

Brainiac is highly intelligent, with a vast knowledge of science, technology, and interstellar travel. He often possesses advanced weaponry and sophisticated gadgets that aid him in his mission. Brainiac is also known for his cybernetic enhancements, making him resistant to physical harm and granting him significant strength and durability.

As an adversary of Superman, Brainiac has proved to be a formidable opponent. He has challenged the Man of Steel on numerous occasions, testing his intelligence, strategy, and superhuman abilities. Brainiac’s vast knowledge and advanced technology make him a dangerous and cunning foe.

In addition to the comics, Brainiac has made appearances in various adaptations, including animated television shows like “Superman: The Animated Series” and “Justice League Unlimited,” as well as live-action shows like “Smallville” and “Krypton.” He has become a popular and iconic villain in the DC Comics universe, known for his intellect, cold demeanor, and relentless pursuit of knowledge.

Mego 50th Anniversary Brainiac wave 18

Deadman, also known as Boston Brand, is a fictional character in the DC Comics universe. Created by writer Arnold Drake and artist Carmine Infantino, he made his first appearance in Strange Adventures #205 in October 1967.

Deadman’s origin story revolves around being a trapeze artist named Boston Brand. One night, he is murdered during his performance in his circus act. However, instead of passing into the afterlife, his spirit is granted the ability to possess the bodies of the living, enabling him to interact with the physical world and seek justice for his untimely death. Led by the mysterious goddess Rama Kushna, Deadman becomes a ghostly hero, roaming the Earth and intervening in various situations to bring about justice and redemption.

Deadman’s unique abilities make him an exceptional detective and crime-fighter. He can possess the bodies of individuals, seeing through their eyes and using their physical abilities to accomplish his goals. Although he frequently seeks to solve the mystery of his own murder, Deadman often finds himself involved in other supernatural and mystical adventures alongside other DC superheroes, including Batman and Superman.

Deadman’s iconic costume consists of a red and white bodysuit with a distinctive large “D” symbol on the chest. Over the years, he has become a popular character within the DC Comics universe and has appeared in various comic book series, including his own ongoing series.

In addition to comics, Deadman has also made appearances in animated TV shows, such as Batman: The Brave and the Bold, and has been a part of several video games, including the critically acclaimed Batman: Arkham series.

Overall, Deadman is a unique and compelling character who blends elements of superheroism, the supernatural, and detective work, making him a memorable and enduring part of the DC Comics universe.

Boeing executives got twice as much in plane perks as the company said

The plane manufacturer disclosed that its c-suite got more than $500,000 in corporate aircraft compensation beyond what it previously said.

Boeing headquarters

There may be a service that helps people afraid to fly on Boeing planes find new flights, but one group that’s not scared to fly Boeing are the company’s executives. The plane manufacturer recently disclosed that its C-suite got more than $500,000 in corporate aircraft compensation beyond what it previously said.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that the revelations, spelled out in Boeing’s 100-plus-page 2023 proxy statement filed last week with the Securities and Exchange Commission, came as the result of the paper’s examination last year of the company’s culture around executive travel.

“The amounts attributable to perquisites and other personal benefits reported in this column for [outgoing CEO Dave] Calhoun, [CFO Brian] West, [outgoing commercial airplanes division head Stanley] Deal and [military division head Ted] Colbert for 2022 and 2021, and the resulting ‘Total All Other Compensation’ amounts previously reported for those years, have been revised as set forth below to reflect certain aircraft usage and other travel expenses that were not previously classified as perquisites by the Company,” the company said in its proxy statement.

Boeing has to report how much plane travel its executives do because personal use of company planes counts as income for both tax reasons and as a matter of shareholder interest — the government and investors both want to know how much executives get compensated, in all forms. It’s worth mentioning that Boeing’s CEO “is required to use Company aircraft for all business and personal travel for security reasons,” as a matter of policy.

🛩️ Calhoun got $142,000 more in plane travel in 2021 and 2022 than previously disclosed, a 44% increase

🛩️ West got $250,000 more in plane travel in 2021 and 2022 than previously disclosed, a 229% increase

🛩️ Deal got $74,000 more in plane travel in 2021 and 2022 than previously disclosed; previously Boeing said he got $63,000 in 2022 plane perks, but not how much he got in 2021

🛩️ Colbert got $79,000 more in plane travel in 2021 and 2022 than previously disclosed

Boeing did not previously say exactly how much plane travel Deal and Colbert received in 2021 and 2022 because it only tells shareholders if its executives receive such perks when the value is “the greater of $25,000 or 10% of all benefits.” The additional compensation reported was about $545,000, or double what the company said earlier.

The Journal reports that, according a recording of an internal meeting in November, Calhoun tried to downplay his travel habits. “I don’t want anybody, by the way, to misinterpret a silly article that got published in The Wall Street Journal about me traveling a lot,” Calhoun said, according to a recording of the meeting the Journal reviewed. “That’s my objective. That is what I want to do. That is what I want everybody at the enterprise level to do.”

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

mego travel 2022

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

mego travel 2022

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

mego travel 2022

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

mego travel 2022

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

mego travel 2022

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

mego travel 2022

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

mego travel 2022

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

mego travel 2022

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

mego travel 2022

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

mego travel 2022

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
