With a capacity of 100,000 people, the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) is the largest stadium in Australia. Located about 1km (0.6mi) from Melbourne’s city centre, you’ll be going from bustling laneway to roaring grandstand in no time!

 In winter the ground hosts Australian football (also known as Aussie rules, or AFL) matches, while in summer it's the stage for cricket. Here are a few more ways to enjoy the ‘G’ (as locals like to call it).

AFL is a fast-paced contact sport whose origins can be traced back to matches played in 1858 based on early forms of rugby and Gaelic football. It's uniquely Australian. Thousands of passionate fans turn up every weekend to cheer on their teams. Buy a ticket and enjoy the spectacle.

Very good tour

I really enjoyed the tour, and it was an added bonus to go on the tour while a Sheffield Shield game was on. The tour guides are members of the MCG, and I have to say our guide was excellent. If you like sports, I would highly recommend this tour; the MCG is an amazing stadium. I found the media section of the stadium very interesting, as was the Library.

Behind-the-scenes tour

Although not a great cricket fan, I couldn’t help but be inspired by this awesome stadium. Alan was our tour guide (30+ years), so he knew his stuff. The sheer scale & history of the G was incredible, and I would recommend tagging on the Museum tour if only for the amazing Shane Warne hologram.

He started by saying he encouraged questions but when anyone in our group asked anything, he wasn't keen to answer and just moved us on quickly. Spencer was a terrific guide and we got to see some of the remnants of the AFL Grand Final in the changing rooms. I would have liked if more time was spent in the MCC members area, I wanted to hear more about it. The museum is very well put together.
