I am a Midwesterner, born and raised in Ohio. I can tell you that autumn in the Midwest can be breathtaking and worth your time and effort.

Peak color periods in the Midwest depend on the weather. Chilly frost-free nights and warm sunny days affect the timing of the fall colors of the Midwest.

Also, different trees color at different times during the months from late September to late October. It is always prudent to check the weather and do your research.

And trees located in the southern regions of the Midwest will color before northern Midwest trees.

From brilliant brilliant golds and yellows to saturated reds and beautiful oranges, Midwest autumn will not disappoint you!

Here you will find 12 of the best places to experience fall in the Midwest.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park In Ohio Is Stunning

One of the most impressive places to view autumn colors in the Midwest is the  Cuyahoga Valley National Park .

With thousands of acres within its borders, it offers a plethora of opportunities to “leaf peep.”

Everett Covered Bridge  is one of the most photographed spots in the park and a great place to begin.

Hiking to any of the parks’ popular waterfalls ,  Brandywine, Blue Hen, and Buttermilk Falls  offers incredible scenes of spectacular Midwest fall foliage.

There are locations while traveling through this national park where it is not necessary to get out of your vehicle to see the fall foliage in Ohio .

For example, the Octagon Shelter via the access road (off Truxell Road) is one of the best places.

The drive along the access road has spectacular views of colorful birch trees.

There is so much to do in Cuyahoga Valley National Park . It is one of the best places to see brilliant fall foliage in the Midwest.

The Covered Road In Houghton County Michigan

The Covered Road in Houghton County is a very popular way to experience MI Fall colors.

It is a small dirt road on the Keweenaw Peninsula.

The Keweenaw Peninsula is in  Michigan’s UP , and a great place to explore in the fall as it is one of the first places in Michigan where the leaves start to turn.

Locally, it is more commonly known as the Covered Road to Freda.

The Covered Road is a narrow dirt road that is well-maintained, and absolutely stunning during the Fall months.

Because it’s so narrow though, the road feels completely covered by the tall trees that are lined alongside it.

Along the road, there are a few places where you can pull off and take pictures of the road.

The fully covered area of the road is a few miles in length, and at the end of the road, you’ll end up in the small town of Freda, one of the best places to experience fall in Michigan!

Minnehaha Falls Showcases Minnesota Fall Colors

Minnehaha Falls is one of the  best waterfalls in Minnesota , and it is especially gorgeous during the Fall season.

The Minnehaha Falls are located in the Minnehaha Regional Park, and there is plenty to do there besides the falls.

If you want to see a large crashing waterfall with a backdrop of changing leaves, but you don’t necessarily want to hike, then Minnehaha Falls is perfect to experience fall in the Midwest.

The hike to get to the fall is fairly simple with a paved walkway that leads to a viewing platform of the falls.

While you walk, you’ll be surrounded by beautiful Fall scenery on the over 160 acres of Minnesota woodland.

At the regional park, there is also a beautiful garden you can walk through while you admire the changing leaves. This is a beautiful location to see fall in Minnesota.

Sturgeon Bay Wisconsin For Brilliant Fall In The Midwest Colors

Located in Door County this area is an incredible summer destination but when autumn arrives, not much tops this place. It is a picture-perfect location to enjoy fall in Wisconsin.

Here in the fall, you will be able to see every shade of red, orange, and yellow all with a backdrop of small-town charm. The natural beauty and historical architecture seem to blend seamlessly.

There are two sets of these waterfalls in Indiana, Upper, and Lower, that have their source in the Mill Creek River.

The Upper Cataract Falls have an impressive thirty-foot drop, while the Lower Falls have a fifteen-foot drop. There is about a half-mile distance between them.

Typically, the brilliant fall colors in Missouri’s Ozark Mountains begin to peak in mid-to-late October, proving some of the best places to see fall in Missouri!

It is always prudent to check the local information as the weather has a lot to do with when the leaves begin to change colors.

One of the most popular locations to experience fall in Missouri is around the Lake of the Ozarks.

Along the route, you will find a national preserve, heritage park, and historical site, along with charming small Kansas towns, and vintage shops.

Platte River State Park, Nebraska

Platte River State Park is located halfway between Omaha and Lincoln, Nebraska. It is a public recreation area open year-round for camping and visitors.

If you are searching, here are some  tips on how to pack lightly when packing to experience fall in the Midwest.

Chicago is a fantastic place to visit any time of year , but the fall is especially wonderful. Summer weather is hot and humid, and the city is busy with lots of tourists. However, this is not the case in the fall. The weather cools down and the crowds lessen.

Things To Do

Chicago is an amazing walking city. It is flat and easy to reach many attractions. You can stroll down the Magnificent Mile for some spectacular shopping or walk to the Chicago River and take a fascinating architectural boat tour . If you want some fun, you can go to Navy Pier to take a boat tour on Lake Michigan or hop on a ferris wheel or carousel ride.

If you are in the mood for something more serious, explore the extraordinary Field Museum or the Chicago Art Institute , one of the largest and oldest art museums in the USA.

To experience the outdoors, you can walk or rent a bike along the lakeshore, and go to Lincoln Park to see some lovely fall foliage . 

Where To Stay

Fall Foliage

A popular Midwest destination that is great for a fall getaway is Fort Wayne, Indiana. If you’d like to see some fall foliage , visit Lindenwood Nature Preserve . They offer free guided tours once a month during the months of September, October, and November.

Fall Activities in Fort Wayne

Another popular event is the Amazing Fall Fun Corn Maze and Pumpkin Patch . It has Indiana’s largest corn maze ! There are also other fun activities like duck races, farm foosball, and the barrel roll. Additionally, the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo has a fun event called Zoo Halloween . It’s also an excuse to pop in and see cute kangaroos!

There are a lot of  fun things to do in Fort Wayne , whether you’re traveling there solo, as a couple, or with kids. If you’d like to spend more time outdoors, make sure to visit Fort Wayne Outfitters . They offer boat tours, rentals (bike, kayak, canoe, and SUP), and can even service your bike.

A great place for a Midwest fall getaway, is Dubuque Iowa! Dubuque sits along the Mississippi River, there are plenty of areas to get out and enjoy nature. Visit the Mines of Spain for 15 miles of hiking trails. The Julien Dubuque Monument Trail and the Horseshoe Bluff Trail are two that are worth checking out.

For fall activities , Czipars Orchard make amazing apple cider donuts , they even have Apple Festival weekend every September. Just down the road is Schuster’s Pumpkin Patch with a giant corn maze and wagon rides. They have a giant canon that you can fire pumpkins from!

The Dubuque Oktoberfest takes place in mid-September.

American Lady Cruises run an annual ‘Colors of Fall Cruise’ along the Mississippi River between Dubuque and Bellevue. It takes place on October 14th as this is the day that fall foliage is suppose to be at it’s peak in East Iowa!

There are plenty of things to do in Dubuque for a getaway, the National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium , Fenelon Place Elevator and the Millwork District are popular places to visit Downtown.

The historic Hotel Julien is conveniently located on Main St with many restaurants and bars just a short walk away.

⭐Great time to visit for: fall foliage

Bellevue Iowa  is off the beaten path, but with its sprawling views of the Mississippi, its quaint shops, and the lovely Bellevue State Park make it the perfect fall destination to peep some fall foliage. A weekend in Bellevue is the perfect quick trip, or staycation. 

To catch the perfect fall foliage , you should aim to visit in early October , and the Bellevue State Park is the perfect spot to enjoy the Mississippi River views, and the lovely fall foliage. There are three miles of trails that you can hike.

There are 220 miles adjacent to the Nelson Unit part of the park for public hunting for turkey, deer, and pheasants if that is more up your alley. 

Where To Eat, Drink & Stay

If you need to relax after all that outdoorsy time, head down to River Ridge Brewing to unwind, enjoy the riverfront views and the cold beer options. If you are here on the weekend, you can then head down to Potter’s Mill for live music and BBQ.

Then head up to the Mont Rest Inn and enjoy a stay in a beautiful Victorian era bed and breakfast . In the morning enjoy a lovely breakfast that is included with the room.

Grand Rapids

⭐Great time to visit for: apple picking and International Art Festival

Spend a fall weekend in Grand Rapids, MI for a unique international art festival and apple picking in the month of September before the weather gets too chilly. 

International Art Festival

In mid to late September, the city of Grand Rapids plays host to Art Prize , an art competition and festival housed in over 160 venues ranging from museums and galleries to bars and restaurants. The 18 day long event occurs biennially and celebrates international and domestic artists.

Apple Picking

Even though there are quite a few apple orchards in the Grand Rapids area, the best place to go is Schwallier’s Country Basket in nearby Sparta. You’ll find a variety of apples throughout the month from typical grocery store varieties such as Gala and Red Delicious to more rare types like Zestar and Cortland.

The farm store also has autumn decor available for purchase as well as apple cider and apple cider donuts . 

While visiting Grand Rapids, don’t forget to check out Downtown Grand Rapids for a nice stroll along the Grand River. Stop by Hopcat for some delicious food and brews and stay at Amway Grand Hotel for a lodging option smack dab in the middle of everything.

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

⭐Great time to visit for: fall foliage and outdoor activities

When it comes to fall destinations in the Midwest, we need to talk about the Upper Peninsula of Michigan . The UP, as it’s called colloquially, is a sparsely populated, heavily forested peninsula bordered by three Great Lakes. It makes an excellent addition to a  Michigan fall road trip . 

The UP is an excellent place to go looking for fall colors , especially in places like Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park , the Keweenaw Peninsula , Tahquamenon Falls State Park , and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore .

Outdoor Activities

Other than going on hikes in these areas, some must-dos include driving the Brockway Mountain Drive on the Keweenaw Peninsula, and taking a boat cruise on Lake Superior at Pictured Rocks .

You’ll need at least 5 days to properly explore the Upper Peninsula in the fall, and I recommend basing yourself for a couple nights in Munising (near Pictured Rocks) and a couple in Houghton near the Keweenaw ( The Vault Hotel is especially great!).

Because the UP is so far north, peak fall color here usually happens in late September/early October each year , so you’ll want to plan your road trip accordingly.

The Mitten State, in general, is an underrated getaway in the USA. There are so many things to do in Michigan from Detroit up to the Upper Peninsula throughout the entire year. Petoskey, Michigan, in particular, is a prime – yet off-the-beaten path – location to visit, especially during the fall season. 

Fall Activities

Situated in Northern Michigan just under the Upper Peninsula, Petoskey is a bustling area with small-town vibes. During the fall season, you can view spectacular colors , gorgeous views of Lake Michigan ,  farms, wineries, shops and more !

Head to Bill’s Farm Market to pick pumpkins and experience incredible views overlooking the countryside. Relax at one of the various wineries while tasting some local, Michigan-made wine . Or stop by the Kilwin’s Chocolate Factory to pick up some caramel apples and other tasty fall treats.

Though, one of the best parts about being in Northern Michigan during the fall is all of the vibrant colors. Plan your visit between the months of September and November to see the fall foliage at it’s best .  

On your visit to Petoskey, stay walking-distance to town in the cute, historic hotel, Stafford’s Perry Hotel . If you are wanting to splurge on a luxury experience, the Inn at Bay Harbor is a must!

Interstate State Park

⭐Great time to visit for: fall foliage and hiking

Interstate State Park  is right on the border of Minnesota and Wisconsin (hence the name) and the perfect Midwest fall destination.  It makes for a great day trip from the Twin Cities in Minnesota or Eau Claire, Wisconsin. 

It’s part of the iconic midwest hiking trail, the Ice Age Trail , making it great for hikers and leaf-peepers alike.  One or two days here should be plenty of time to enjoy the dreamy fall colors while exploring the park.  

Make a stop at the visitor center then hit the trail right out front.  It’s an easy-moderate trail (a lot of uphill on the way back) and hike down to the St. Croix River where you can see a waterfall, the nearby town of Taylors Falls , and glacial potholes . 

This is a really great hike to get a feel for the park.  If you don’t want to start at the visitor center, you can start at the St. Croix River Lookout for a shorter hike with great views.

This is also a great place to visit from Stillwater, Minnesota, an adorable town further up the river and the perfect place to spend the night . The best time to see fall colors here will be late September and early October .  Another great side trip from here is the nearby Franconia Sculpture Park .

Kansas City

⭐Great time to visit for: fall events

One of the best fall destinations in the Midwest is Kansas City, Missouri. It’s a big city, but it has a small town feel. It’s also very budget friendly, with a lot of free attractions that include some really great museums.

Fall Events

During the fall season, there are a few fall activities you should know about. The Great Pumpkin Fest is an especially fun attraction that the whole family will enjoy. There are games, activities, and live entertainment.

There’s also the Annual Fall Festival of Arts, Crafts, and Music . This festival celebrates the harvest season with historic interpreters, artisans, musicians, and crafters.

Where To Eat

There are also a lot of  unique places to eat in Kansas City . The city is known for its barbecue, but you can really find all kinds of food. If you are craving barbecue , though, definitely check out Q39 . To best explore and really get to know the city, it’s best to spend at least a weekend there.

⭐Great time to visit for: fall and haunted events

Regardless of your autumnal interests, St. Louis, Missouri has a unique fall adventure with your name on it. For family-friendly fun, consider the Great Godfrey Corn Maze , in nearby Godfrey, Illinois, with an option to partake in a spooky haunted maze on weekend nights.

For some more adult options, consider visiting Urban Chestnut Brewery ’s annual outdoor screening of the 1922 classic silent film Nesferatu, with a live accompanying orchestra and even a visit from the Count himself!

Haunted Events

Looking for something a bit scarier? This historical city has plenty of old houses that surely have played host to a ghost story or two (including the house that inspired The Exorcist!), but few houses are quite as haunted as the city’s Lemp Mansion , consistently ranked as one of the ten most haunted houses in the United States .

While this stately manor was once the living quarters of a beer baron, you can now take haunted history tours of its halls or even spend the night at the inn now located in the mansion- if you dare!

⭐Great time to visit for: fall events and less crowds

If you’re looking for a fantastic fall destination in the Midwest, then Omaha, Nebraska absolutely must be on your list! It’s a city perfect for a getaway and fall is a great time to visit because the crowds are gone and accommodations are affordable.

Better yet – the fall festivities are top notch, and among some of the best in the country! Visit the popular Vala’s Pumpkin Patch in nearby Gretna, which has over 50 attractions. Family favorites include Pigtucky Derby Pig Races , a 3-acre corn maze , the Spook shed and the Great Pumpkin Jump .

If you’re looking for smaller pumpkin patches that still have a lot to offer, check out the Bellevue Berry Farm & Pumpkin Patch , Skinny Bones Pumpkin Patch and Wenninghoff Farm.

Try apple picking at Martin’s Hillside Orchard or the famous Arbor Day Farm , a day trip to Nebraska City. Or, if you’re looking for places to see fall colors in Omaha be sure to visit Fontenelle Forest , Hitchcock Nature Center and Mahoney State Park . If bright red and yellow fall colors are what you’re after, be sure to visit early to mid-October .

One of the most underrated places to spend fall in the midwest (and all of the United States) is Cincinnati, Ohio and the rest of southwest Ohio!

Oktoberfest

There are plenty of reasons to travel to Cincinnati in the fall, but one can’t-miss event is Oktoberfest Zinzinnati , which takes place usually in mid/late-September . Cincinnati is known for its German history and the city takes pride in this annual event that hosts half a million people and has since 1976. It is the largest Oktoberfest in the United States !

Fall foliage is ever-present in Cincinnati and it tends to reach its peak by the second or third week of October . The city is teeming with parks and you can see the illuminating colors in Alms Park , Sharon Woods , along the Loveland Bike Trail , and beyond!

Another can’t miss thing to do during fall is to head to one of the many farms for their festivals (and a bit of pumpkin and apple picking). Nelter’s Farm , Burger Farm , and Kinman Farms are some of the locals’ favorites. 

You will also find many amazing day and  weekend trips from Cincinnati  if you want to get out of the city a bit.

During November , Cincinnati is gearing up for the Christmas holidays and lights start going up everywhere. It is the perfect time to warm up with some local Skyline Chili and walk around the Ohio city.

Cuyahoga Valley National Park

One of the best fall destinations in the Midwest USA is Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. Ohio’s only national park, Cuyahoga Valley National Park is located along the Cuyahoga River between Cleveland and Akron.

Fall Foliage & Hiking

Boasting thousands of acres, it offers lots of opportunities to “leaf peep.” And a lot of options on how to do just that! Love hiking? You can choose several hikes of varying lengths and degrees of difficulty to get to the spectacular waterfalls at this national park including Brandwine, Blue Hen,  and  Buttermilk Falls.   The autumnal views are incredible .

One of the romantic fall destinations in the Midwest is the  Everett Covered Bridge  in Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Yes, the park has its own covered bridge, built in the 1800s. Matter of fact it is the only covered bridge in the entire county!

There are several hiking trails near the historical bridge so you can see it from many angles. Perfect for viewing the blazing fall colors, and snapping a memorable picture.

Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad

One of the most fun things to do here for both the young and young-at-heart is to hop aboard the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad ! This is one of the most relaxing ways to experience  fall in Ohio . 

The train meanders its way through the park alongside the Cuyahoga River. Not only will you have a great vantage point to view all the bright fall colors , but you may also be fortunate enough to spot wild animals such as deer, eagles, and beavers. 

The nearby cities of Akron and Peninsula offer restaurants you can take advantage of that are easily accessible from CVNP. If you simply want snacks or water there are two stores within the park run by the Conservatory for Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

Badlands national park.

⭐Great time to visit for: hiking and wildlife spotting

Visiting Badlands National Park in the fall is a perfect time to visit because the summer crowds have left and the temperature is starting to cool down. Visiting in early fall is the best as temperatures start to dip at night in October. There are so many fun  things to do in Badlands National Park .

Hiking during the fall is especially enjoyable because of the cooler temperatures. Some of the best hikes in the park are the Door Trail, Window Trail and Notch Trail . There are also a number of short roadside trails with informational signage about the park. Along with hiking, be sure to visit the Big Badlands Overlook and Yellow Mounds Overlook .

Fall is a great time to see wildlife in the park. There are bighorn sheep, antelope, bison, deer and antelope who call the park home. To get an up close look at the native prairie dogs, check out the Roberts Prairie Dog Town. The Sage Creek Rim Road is a great place to spot wildlife.

Mount Rushmore & Crazy Horse Memorials

South Dakota is perfect for a fall trip because of its vibrant foliage colors and pleasant weather. During this time, it is worth visiting the icon of America – Mount Rushmore National Memorial.

The best time to visit is from September 21-30, when lighting ceremonies take place every evening. However, it is also worth visiting during the other fall months, when the crowds are much smaller and colors are glorious. From Mount Rushmore, it’s only a 30-minute drive (18 miles) to another historic monument. 

Crazy Horse Memorial

The Crazy Horse Memorial has been under construction for 70 years. When it is finished, it will be the largest monument in the world . It presents Chief Crazy Horse, a Native American war leader of the Oglala Lakota. He is one of the most famous and iconic Native American tribal members.

The planned height is 563 feet (172 m) tall and the planned length is 641 feet (195 m). However, because the project is funded entirely by entrance fees and donations, the work will take a very long time.

Among these monuments is the magnificent Custer State Park . There are many hiking trails and viewpoints here. It’s worth driving through Needles Eye Tunnel and taking the hike to Black Elk Peak. Also, you can encounter buffalo on the Custer State Park Wildlife Loop Road .

Therefore, you can spend the whole weekend in the area. The perfect place to stay for a night is Custer, with a great lodging selection .

Apostle Islands

Fall in Apostle Islands arrives in the months of September to November . During the arrival of this season, the islands begin to get covered in fall colors . Right after November, the islands begin to enter the Winter season. That is why it is best to visit them in the fall. 

It is a great place to visit in the fall because of great fall foliage, seasonal festivals, exciting activities, and more. The fall activities that the visitors should know about include: walking through the trails watching distinct fall colors, visiting Bayfield , celebrating the season at Bayfield’s Apple Festival , enjoying fall boat tours, kayaking and fall camping.

The leaf-peeping in Apostle islands comes in late October . However, if you want to witness the natural phenomenon, visit in early October. 

Where to Eat, Drink & Stay

The Bayfield apple festival is a must-visit along with other adventures. That is why you need to save some time to witness everything and visit for at least two to three days. There are many places to stay there like The Inn on Madeline Island . The travelers can also enjoy great food at The Bayfield Inn Restaurant .

Door County

Door County, Wisconsin is a true gem. Few outside Wisconsin are familiar with Door County, yet it’s such a wonderful destination for a long weekend spent exploring this laid-back peninsula made up of 15 charming towns and villages.  

Door County is home to five state parks, including Whitefish Dunes State Park in Sturgeon Bay. Hike to the top of “ Old Baldy, ” the tallest sand dune in Wisconsin . It’s one of the best places to revel in the amber, crimson and golden leaves that peak from late-September to mid-October. 

Things to Do

In Sister Bay , book a seasonal farm tour at Door County Creamery . All tours include cheese curds, a patio lunch and time to visit with the farm goats. You’ll also want to rent a bike at Peninsula State Park in Fish Creek to cycle the 10-mile Sunset Trail for foliage-filled stops at Nicolet Beach and Eagle Bluff Lighthouse .

Don’t leave town without an authentic Fish Boil dinner . It’s a true Door County tradition and you’ll find them all across the peninsula, including at Rowleys Bay Resort in Ellison Bay. Fish Boil dinners wow with a boil-over in a huge outdoor kettle. 

Stay the weekend at the Bay Shore Inn to be rewarded with vibrantly-hued sunsets over Sturgeon Bay. It’s an all-suite property, which is a great choice for those visiting  Door County with kids  in tow.

Madison makes the perfect choice for a Midwest fall destination. While this lively capital city is popular year round, come October Madison’s fall colors really light up the town. 

Fall foliage can best be seen during the first two weeks of October and will be on prominent display throughout the city. Some of the best spots for viewing fall colors will be around the UW Madison campus or along the Lake Monona Bike Loop trail . 

In addition to its fall colors, the Madison area also hosts a variety of festive activities during the autumn months. One of the area’s most popular fall activities is to visit the corn maze and pumpkin patch at Treinen Farm just north of town.  Schuster’s Farm is another popular option with a pumpkin patch, corn maze and hayride located just east of town. 

If you’re looking for a place to stay in Madison I recommend the AC Hotel downtown. You’ll not only be walking distance to all the best things to do in Madison , but they also have an excellent rooftop wine bar with fantastic views of the Wisconsin State Capitol. Madison can be visited on a long weekend getaway, or as a stop on a longer Wisconsin road trip.

Chicago is one of the best weekend trips you can plan in the Midwest. It is easily accessible by car, train, and air travel, and there are attractions to visit in Chicago all year-round . Even in the brutal winter months, a weekend away in Chicago is fun.

If you are only spending a few days in Chicago and do not have a specific getaway idea, start with the highlights by exploring the Navy Pier and the Willis Tower, which has the best views of the city. If you still have the energy for another day of outdoor winter fun, you should experience the fat bike trails in the area.

There are many outfitters that rent equipment and offer lessons, from cross-country skiing and snowmobiling to snowshoeing. Some equipment like snowmobiles can be rented for the week. A weekend getaway in the Hocking Hills region of Ohio is perfect for couples. There are quaint cabins and inns tucked away in the woods throughout this southern Ohio region.

The Hocking Hills is Ohio's natural retreat, attracting people who are looking for a day hike or a quiet weekend. You will want to start in the Hocking Hills State Park near Logan, which has more than 2,300 acres of forestland.

Trails throughout the Hocking Hills region are as casual or as strenuous as you prefer. No matter whether you hike through Old Man's Cave, walk through the caves at Ash Cave, or marvel at the massive gorges in Conkle's Hollow, you will see unique rock formations, waterfalls, and wildlife.

One day of your Sleeping Bear Dunes weekend could be spent just driving and enjoying the scenic views. The Pierce Stocking Scenic Drive is a 7.4-mile route through the National Lakeshore that takes you to several overlooks. The Dune Overlook is another spot with a panoramic view of the lakeshore. Pack a lunch and enjoy the scenery from Picnic Mountain, which is also along the drive.

A second day of your weekend should be enjoying the water. Besides the 35-miles of lakeshore, there are 26 inland lakes for kayaking, canoeing, fishing, bird-watching, and swimming. Some of the lakes to consider are Big and Little Glen for boating and Bass Lake for fishing.

You might want to dedicate a full day at the Sleeping Bear Dunes. The Dune Climb is accessible five miles north of Empire. As vivid reds, bright yellows, and deep browns take over the green leaves, it’s fall foliage time in the Midwest. Since peak color periods range from late September to mid-October across the region’s 12 states, there can be a challenge in pinpointing the best time to hop in the family fun wagon and find drives or hikes that showcase the Midwest’s beautiful fall foliage.

From Minnesota to Missouri, Midwesterners enjoy plenty of opportunities to see magnificent colors as the region transitions seasons. Here is a look at some of the best places to enjoy the fall season in the Midwest.

1. River Trail Nature Center, Northbrook, Illinois

Enjoy a walk among the leaves at Northbrook’s River Trail Nature Center . With a rainbow of fall colors — orange, yellow, red, and brown — visitors enjoy beautiful views of the season. As leaves drop from the trees, they create a colorful carpet on the easy-to-navigate paths, such as the paved Orange Trail. Unpaved trails include Little Fort, Grove Portage, Green Bay (each is about half a mile long). As you explore the nature center, look for birds, squirrels, and other wildlife that call the trails home.

2. Dunnings Spring Park, Decorah, Iowa

With a waterfall casually making its way down a deceiving slope, Dunnings Spring Park is one of the best spots in Iowa to take in fall foliage. With trails that take you along the waterfall, as well as other areas of the park, you’ll trek among vibrant fall colors. While trails vary in difficulty, fall hikers can find one that meets their preferences. Follow the trail to the Ice Cave, a rare geological attraction at the park that creates a cave of ice that lasts from winter until the end of summer. As part of the Driftless Area — a region of land including northeastern Iowa that was never covered by ice during the Ice Age and wasn’t impacted by glaciers — Decorah offers other scenic drives during autumn.

Pro Tip: The ice cave has narrow passages that may not be safe for some visitors.

3. Brown County State Park, Nashville, Indiana

As Indiana’s largest state park, with about 16,000 acres, Brown County State Park is perfect for fall foliage viewing. Nicknamed “Little Smokies” for its views, hike any of the park’s trails, ranging from easy to rugged, and get up-close to oaks, birch, and maple trees. Hike along lakeshores for beautiful views including colorful reflections of the trees in the water. The visitor center and other spots offer amazing views of the fall colors. Consider a guided weekend horseback ride along the park’s trails. With about 20 miles of tree-lined roads, you can also enjoy a comfortable drive through the park, stopping at several overlooks along the way.

4. Overland Park Arboretum And Botanical Gardens, Overland Park, Kansas

With 300 acres of trees, plants, and flowers, a walk through Overland Park’s arboretum is full of color during the fall. With 6 miles of paved and wood chip-covered trails, visitors can walk among the colors as they explore trees and plants at Overland Park Arboretum and Gardens . Sculptures and special exhibits are also available on the trails. With 75-foot-long pedestrian bridges, hikers cross Wolf Creek during their treks through the park, including an open prairie, as well as a small lake (with a sculpture of artist Claude Monet painting the Kansas scenery).

5. North Shore Scenic Highway, Lutsen, Minnesota

A 150-mile drive from Duluth to Grand Portage State Park in northeast Minnesota ranks among the most beautiful areas in the United States any time of the year, but it’s especially enticing during fall. With Lake Superior on one side and the Superior National Forest covering much of the other, trees, coves, smaller lakes, and more create a once-in-a-lifetime experience for fall foliage fans. While a drive along Gunflint Trail near Grand Marais offers beautiful scenery, Lutsen Mountain in Lutsen rates as the area to visit for fall colors along the North Shore . With thousands of acres of trees showcasing all the colors of autumn, the view is enhanced with a ride on the Summit Express Gondola , traveling from the base of the mountain to the top of Moose Mountain. With several trails to follow, enjoy a hike among the region’s tall trees, while enjoying views of the Sawtooth Mountains and a seemingly endless landscape of orange, yellow, red, green, and brown.

6. Upper Peninsula, Grand Marais, Michigan

Michigan’s upper peninsula features some of the most beautiful fall scenery in the Midwest. Consider a drive from Grand Marais to Munising , along Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore . With its unique rock designs set against the season’s colors, the park may rate as one of the most impressive sights in the country. While at the park, revert to your childhood and have fun at the Devil’s Logslide. The scenic drive includes overlooks, which give you outstanding views of nature’s art, as well as Au Sable lighthouse.

7. Lake Of The Ozarks State Park, Kaizer, Missouri

Fall foliage scenery in southeast Missouri is enhanced with a visit to Lake of the Ozarks State Park . Missouri’s largest state park features acres upon acres of forests fading from green to hues of yellow, red, and orange. With rolling hills and the gleam of the Lake of the Ozarks, a drive through the park includes breathtaking moments of immaculate beauty. Enjoy a hike along any of the park’s 13 trails, including Rocky Top Trail, which covers 2 miles through white oaks, bluestem grasses, and other native trees. After crossing a ravine, you’ll find yourself atop dolomite cliffs with picturesque views of the Lake of the Ozarks.

8. Indian Cave State Park, Shubert, Nebraska

Hugging the Missouri River, Indian Cave State Park in southeast Nebraska combines fall foliage with a hint of Halloween. Decorations, such as hay characters and ghosts, highlight a drive through the park. With Nebraska’s leaves forsaking green for gold, red, orange, and autumn brown, a drive through the park offers impressive views. Follow the road to the cave, and stand next to the river, taking in the beauty that nature radiates. Hayrack rides provide opportunities to view the fall colors from different angles.

Pro Tip: A daily or annual permit is required for entrance to Indian Cave State Park.

9. Turtle Mountain Forest, Bottineau, North Dakota

North Dakota may not be known for its trees, with an old joke being that the state tree is a power pole. But, the Peace Garden State is home to more than 7,500 acres of aspen, birch, and bur oak trees in the Turtle Mountain Forest . While not actual mountains, the rolling hills add to the beauty of the region.

While enjoying fall foliage in the forest, visit the Mystical Horizons . Located on the western edge of the Turtle Mountains, “Stonehenge of the Prairie” offers views of the farmland in the valley below. The attraction features stone and cement fixtures celebrating summer, winter, and the equinox. A working sundial helps keep time on the mountain. Lake Metigoshe State Park offers scenic water and foliage views as part of your tour through Turtle Mountain State Forest.

10. Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Brecksville, Ohio

Maple trees are among the first to change colors, with leaves turning bright red, orange, and yellow. They’re soon followed by white oaks, dogwoods, and black gum, among others, at Cuyahoga Valley National Park . With 33,000 acres and more than 125 miles of trails, the views are endless. Follow the trail to Brandywine Falls, and soak in the natural beauty surrounding it. Ledges Overlook presents breathtaking scenery of miles of trees displaying colorful views. The national park also offers biking trails and kayaking/canoeing opportunities.

11. Vanocker Canyon, Sturgis, South Dakota

South Dakota’s Black Hills provide immaculate views year-round, so it’s pretty easy to find amazing views of fall foliage. Selecting one area to highlight is more challenging than you may think. However, Vanocker Canyon ranks as one of the most beautiful drives to enjoy fall foliage in South Dakota. A 17-mile drive through the canyon provides views of pine trees and the golden hues of Aspens. Explore the northern Black Hills on any of the trails along the way, as you search for more and more glorious views of the land considered sacred by Lakota (Sioux) Native Americans.

12. Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, Bayfield, Wisconsin

Hop aboard a cruise boat and appreciate the fall colors of the Apostle Islands . With leaves typically turning colors later in the season than on the mainland, “leaf peepers” can extend fall foliage viewing a little longer. With vibrant red, yellow, and orange leaves accented with deep brown ones, the islands offer stunning views. Once back on the mainland, explore more of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore , with another 12 miles of majestic colors on display. The annual apple festival also takes place in Bayfield the first weekend in October.

Fall Break is upon us and for many children in central Indiana, that means up to 2 weeks away from school. As a parent, this could be an opportunity to take your child to explore a new-to-you, fun place. As much as we love Indy, the rest of Indiana and our neighboring states are full of fall break trips for families worthy of venturing outside our normal haunts. Here is a list of fun fall and Halloween-themed places beyond Central Indiana to visit during fall break. Make these a day trip or possibly extend your stay to an overnight or weekend trip.

Indiana Fall Break Trips for Families

Harvest tyme pumpkin glow trail.

Harvest Tyme, a pumpkin patch in Northwest Indiana, will have a ticketed nighttime Pumpkin Glow, from September 30 to October 29. On weekend evenings, Harvest Tyme will have thousands of lights along a half-mile walking trail filled with specialty hand-carved jack-o-lanterns. The Pumpkin Glow Trail will include over 1000 characters and dozens of large festive and colorful light displays. Be mindful that the farm is unpaved and some parts of the ground will be bumpy and uneven.

Holiday World Happy Halloween Weekends

From September 23 through the end of October, Holiday World will be open on weekends only to celebrate Halloween. The family-friendly special events include the rides you love at Holiday World, Halloween-themed shows, SCAREbnb, and Holidog’s 3D Halloween Adventure, 12 acres of corn mazes, hayrides, Kitty’s Dance Spooktacular, trick-or-treating for children 12 and younger, and Carnival Chaos. Please note that this final attraction features loud noises, strobe lighting, mazes, and “startles” most suitable for older children and adults.

Wilstem Wildlife Park

Wilstem Wildlife Park is a one-of-a-kind fall light experience. The Fall Festival of Lights operates on select days throughout October. This drive-thru experience begins at dusk. Please note that this event does not include any animal encounters.

If you are looking to view the animals, there are 2 options: the Twilight Drive Thru and Light Show and the Twilight VIP Safari Wagon Tour and Light Show. The Twilight Drive Thru and Light Show allows you to view animals starting at 5:30. The last car enters at 7. Be aware the Roo Barn closes at 8 and the light show will start at dusk.

The Twilight VIP Safari Wagon Tour and Light Show include experiencing the Drive-Thru Safari on a wagon and viewing over 50 different species. The tour allows you to go off the path and get up close and personal with the animals including the elephant habitat.

Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo

The Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo is hosting Wild Zoo Halloween, a weekend event where dressing up in costumes is encouraged and your family can enjoy special attractions. Enjoy a mystery maze, treats, and watching animals interact with spooky enrichment activities. The Zoo has specially themed events for each weekend until the end of October. Wild Zoo Halloween is included in your admission to the Fort Wayne Children’s Zoo. Just head to the zoo from 10 am-4 pm on Saturdays and Sundays from October 7-29.

Kentucky Fall Break Trips for Families

There is nothing that compares to the elaborate craftsmanship of the jack-o-lanterns at the Louisville Jack-o-Lantern Spectacular. From October 3-31, visitors will be amazed by the 5000+ pumpkins, including 100 jack-o-lanterns that are intricately carved by local artists along the ⅓-mile trail. Iroquois Park serves as the perfect backdrop for this art gallery of pumpkins in the woods, creating an added spooky aesthetic that only enhances the experience of your walk through the trail.

The trail does include a grade with a steep slope and is comprised of compacted limestone so be mindful if you need to bring a stroller or wheelchair. Note that on weekends you should expect longer lines at the entrance to the trail. Once you enter, follow the path at your own pace. Various vendors offer refreshments before entering the trail and restrooms are located near the amphitheater. It is recommended you purchase tickets prior because the event does sell out and there is timed entry.

Pumpkins at Kentucky Kingdom

My family has enjoyed going to Kentucky Kingdom for the last 2 years, where my children just love the little kids’ ride section. During our last visit, we learned of their Pumpkin Event and I am so excited to go. From September 30 to October 29 at Kentucky Kingdom, your family can enjoy fall family fun activities that include trick-or-treating and carnival games. At night, enjoy the different glowing pumpkin sculptures and orange gourds that illuminate the park.

Louisville Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo

To celebrate Halloween, Louisville Zoo hosts Boo at the Zoo, a family event that includes the “spooktacular” carousel, a free crawling “Not-So-Itsy-Bitsy” spider house, storybook characters, photo ops with princesses and superheroes, The Headless Horseman of Sleepy Hollow Experience, and a safe trick-or-treating experience with 20 treat booths.

Ohio Fall Break Trips for Families

Kings Island hosts two Halloween events during weekends in October. Their Trick or Treat Fest daytime event is family-friendly, while Halloween Haunt in the evening is a more scary event meant for adults and teens. The Trick or Treat Fest operates from 11 am to 6 pm on Saturdays and Sundays from September 24 through October 29. During the event, you can expect specialty food and craft beers, musical entertainment, trick-or-treating, and other fall-themed games and activities.

Halloween Haunt transforms Kings Island from 6 pm until midnight into a haunting experience filled with scare zones, shows, and mazes.

Great Wolf Lodge Howl-o-Ween

If you have stayed at any of the Great Wolf Lodges, then you know they offer more than just an indoor water park. They really go above and beyond as far as guest service and amenities. Every day at the Great Wolf Lodge, they offer a variety of activities to do throughout your stay to enhance your family’s visit. The indoor waterpark at the Mason, Ohio location is my personal favorite.

If you visit during the Howl-O-Ween event you can expect fall décor throughout the resort and “howl-o -ween” themed activities that include a trick-or-treat trail, a fall-themed arts and crafts activity, Boo Bingo, yoga, a Monster Bash dance party, storytime, and much more. Be sure to check online for promo codes before you book.

Cincinnati Zoo HallZOOween

The Cincinnati Zoo is one of my favorite zoos. HallZOOween is a special event held on weekends, October 15-30, from 12 to 5 pm. Costumes are encouraged and activities include trick-or-treat stations, special animal enrichment, and Phil Dalton’s Theater of Illusion Show. For an additional charge, enjoy the Hogwarts Express Train Ride and the Scare-ousel.

Brick or Treat at Legoland Discovery Center Columbus

Now through Halloween, Legoland Discovery Center Columbus will be hosting their Halloween event, “Brick-or-Treat” with themed activities, games and snacks, character visits, and the 4D Halloween movie “Monster Party.” Sunday through Friday, kids can trick-or-treat throughout the Center to receive bricks for a special themed build. On Saturdays, come in costume to participate in fun costume contests and compete to win prizes.

Columbus Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo

The Columbus Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo begins on October 6 at 5 pm and will run for the remaining weekends of October. Activities include music, a Character Craze Hay Maze, Jessie’s Jack-O-Lantern Journey, Tommy C. Turtle’s Trick or Treat Trail, Sydnee Koala’s Royal Carousel, and other family fun.

Illinois Fall Break Trips for Families

Bengtson’s continues to be one of our favorite fall break trips for families. Think of it as a farm fall festival theme park for families. They have one-of-a-kind rides that include a tractor town ride where the kids steer a tractor through a barn with animated animals, two spinning rides, a swing, two train rides, and a roller coaster. You can also check out a haunted barn for older kids, a corn kernel pit, a kids’ area with a playground and playhouses, pig races, a petting zoo, a selfie booth, and many photo ops.

Believe it or not, these are just the beginning! It is best to visit Bengtson’s during the week for cheaper rates and to avoid large crowds that develop on the weekends when Bengtson’s will reach capacity early in the day. Also note that most of the pathways are paved for wheelchairs, wagons, and strollers and you can leave and come back on the day you visit with a handstamp and a copy of your receipt.

Lincoln Park Zoo Fall Fest

Lincoln Park Zoo is a free public zoo in downtown Chicago. This October, they are hosting a fall festival event that includes ticketed attractions throughout the zoo. There is a Fun Slide, harvest maze, pumpkin walk, racecar ride, and more. Guests can also enjoy free musical entertainment, a pumpkin patch, professional pumpkin carvers, and fall-themed enrichment for the animals.

Navy Pier Pier Pumpkin Lights

Navy Pier, Chicago’s famous lakefront attraction will host a pumpkin pop-up featuring 1000 pumpkins. These pumpkin displays are great photo opportunities, and they are best viewed when they start glowing at dusk.

Legoland Discovery Center Chicago “Brick or Treat”

Throughout October, Legoland Discovery Center Chicago will be hosting their Halloween event, “Brick-or-Treat” where children are invited to enjoy special activities including a glow building zone, a haunted miniland scavenger hunt, and a new 4D Halloween movie, “Monster Party!” Costumes are encouraged.

Brookfield Zoo

Brookfield Zoo will be hosting Boo at the Zoo on Saturdays and Sundays beginning October 7 and running until the 22. The Zoo will be decorated with large inflatables, photo-ops, treats for the kids, and other themed activities. The animals will receive pumpkins each morning.

Six Flags Great America

Before the nighttime, scary Fright Fest event, Six Flags Great America offers a more family-friendly opportunity during the day from 11 am to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Kids Boo Fest begins September 16 and runs through October 29. The event includes kid-friendly rides, a trick-or-treat trail, and Camp Boo filled with fall festival activities. Fright Fest begins at 6 pm and is for a mature audience with events that feature haunted houses, scare zones, and going on rides at night.

The Great Wolf Lodge Gurnee

Last fall break, my family went to the Gurnee Great Wolf Lodge for Howl-O-Ween. We just loved the festivities including elaborate large balloon designs of a ghost, bat, and spider in the lobby, the Halloween-themed arts and crafts, the trick-or-treat trail, and the dance party to name a few. Back again this year, the Great Wolf Lodge in Gurnee will also have Boo Bingo, yoga, a Monster Bash dance party, storytime, and much more. Check online for promo codes when you book!

Missouri Fall Break Trips for Families

If you want a one-of-a-kind experience to do something active with your family, the City Museum is your answer. There is no best way to describe this converted warehouse in downtown St. Louis. It is filled with so many areas to explore and climb and is appropriate for all ages.

Halloween brings Fright at the Museum on weekends beginning September 28. The City Museum promises options for activities and entertainment for all ages. At the time of publishing, plans were still in the works for this year’s spooky event. Check the City Museum’s website for details as they are released.

Six Flags St Louis

Like Six Flags Great America, Six Flags St Louis offers 2 separate Halloween Events. Kids Boo Fest, a family-friendly event during the day, includes kid-friendly rides, a trick-or-treat trail, and a pirate trail. Fright Fest begins in the early evening and is for a mature audience with events that feature haunted houses, scare zones, and experiencing thrill rides at night.

St. Louis Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo

The St. Louis Zoo offers Boo at the Zoo from October 13-29. While it doesn’t have a trick-or-treat event, the Zoo will have Halloween-themed decorations like Haunted Harvest, Fragile Forest, and a giant cauldron, as well as returning favorites like the Monster Mash, Skeleton Soiree, and Pirate Pointe. Ticket prices vary for ages 2+ depending on what day you attend. Anyone under the age of 2 is free.

We get it, you need a weekend getaway. Brownie points if it’s a kid-friendly getaway. If you live in the Midwest or plan on visiting, there are so many cool and fun travel options for parents and kids. If a family weekend getaway is in order, let the internet (and Scary Mommy) be your friend . No need to travel to exotic lands — explore the many Midwest family vacation spots where the shores of the Great Lakes reach five different states. Beyond the Great Lakes, the Midwest is covered with rivers, inland lakes, and absolutely stunning greenery offering boundless outdoor adventures . Looking for an urban retreat? The Midwest is home to some of the nation’s most exciting cities (hello Chicago!) with deep culture, adrenaline-pumping attractions (ever heard of Kings Island), and some of the best Children’s Museums and Zoos in the country!

Family Weekend Getaway Ideas in the Midwest

Tiny Medora offers big fun with the North Dakota Cowboy Hall of Fame and the boot-scootin’ Medora Musical which is always live and outside at the Burning Hills Amphitheater. Swing by town to learn about President Roosevelt’s legacy of conservation before heading to the Theodore Roosevelt National Park (which is totally bike, horseback, car, and hiker friendly) to experience the simple beauty of the Badlands. Just a short hours drive away in Regents is the famed Enchanted Highway, a 32-mile stretch of two lane highway that features the world’s most expansive collection of larger-than- life scrap metal sculptures — a not to be missed experience.

Discover the breathtaking beauty of expansive pine trees, limestone cliffs, and flowing waterfalls in the Black Hills National Forest. Enjoy the seasonal beauty of Black Hills all year long at the Spearfish Canyon Lodge where visitors mountain bike, snowshoe, fly fish, and even tour the canyons on moonlit snowmobile rides. When ready for an adventure beyond the canyon, dig into the past with a guided tour of the Broken Boot Gold Mine, hit the slopes at Terry Peak, or see Mount Rushmore National Monument in person (just a scenic hour car ride away).

Take a family weekend trip to the  Cape Cod of the Midwest. Door County is a narrow peninsula (just 10 miles wide) sandwiched between Green Bay and Lake Michigan with tons to do and see. The expansive 300 miles of shoreline is home to 10 lighthouses, 5 state parks, and 30 beaches that have tons of all season outdoor activities. But exploring the peninsula’s picturesque coastal towns famous for community shrimp boils, art galleries, a not-be-missed maritime museum, and of course, cherry pie, is the real treat. Winding through Minnesota and Wisconsin, the shores of the St. Croix River Valley have been welcoming Midwest weekend family visitors to its picturesque towns for ages. This 4- bedroom vacation rental (just over an hour drive from the twin cities) is the perfect hub for your family weekend visit to the St. Croix River Valley. Travel back in time with a vintage train ride through the valley (the fall color tours are especially popular) or dine down the river on a St. Croix River Cruise. Outdoor enthusiasts love the expansive Interstate State Park where swimming and hiking around gorges is just as popular as snowshoeing and cross country skiing. If you get the opportunity to visit the St. Croix River Valley in winter, make sure to check out the Annual Hot Air Balloon Festival and the October Autumn Fest.

Live the laidback lake life at this Brainerd Lakes Region waterfront log cabin. Generations of families have been drawn to the great fishing, family water sports, and lakes galore — 450 of them to be exact. Shorelines are dotted with rustic main streets, state parks, hiking trails, and kitschy Paul Bunyan fun (check out the last from the past Paul Bunyan Land). Nestled on the shores of popular Gull Lake stay in this rustic 3 bedroom waterfront cabin which has a private beach and playground — so Mama can relax, too. With u-pick local farms, color tours, and outdoor winter adventures (dog sledding anyone?) the Brainerd Lakes Region is the perfect weekend family getaway in the lovely Midwest.

In The City

Home to over 10,000 animals and famed Zoology Conservationist Jack Hanna, the 583 acre Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is reason enough to make Columbus our family getaway destination. Make sure to book an open air safari at the Wilds where giraffes roam free and bring your swimsuits to cool off at the Zoombezi Water Park. Stroll the sidewalks of the famed Easton Town Center where shopping, nightlife, and dining merge next to the Marriott Courtyard Columbus Easton (where a night’s stay starts around $150 for four people). The full service hotel features an indoor pool and most importantly is just steps away from the LegoLand Discovery Center where you can build the day away.

For non-stop urban family fun look no further than Chicago. Shop the Magnificent Mile, hit up the windy city art scene (the Art institute of Chicago is free for kids under 14) or cheer on the Bears at famed Soldier Field. Check into the Renaissance Chicago Downtown overlooking the Chicago River. This upscale contemporary hotel will delight the design lover and is fully equipped with an indoor heated pool for the kids. Grab an obligatory Millenium Park Bean selfie which is just blocks away before catching a bird’s eye view of the city from the top of the Navy Pier ferris wheel (you will be shocked by how big Lake Michigan actually is). Spark curiosity in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Close to the two-family vacation no brainers (a zoo and a children’s museum), The Omaha Marriott Downtown is the perfect vacation hub for the family (and prices start at just around $127 per night). Considered one of the nation’s top zoos, The Henry Dorly Zoo & Aquarium is known for the immersive habitats and interactive experiences (like stingray beach) that allow visitors to get up close to their animal residents. Show your race car lovers the real thing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. When you are ready to slow down the pace, head over to the five floors of interactive exhibits at the Indianapolis Children’s Museum (which is the world’s largest). Dig for dinos in the Dinosphere or play among the legends in the Outdoor Sports Experience. Stay at the unique Fort Harrison State Park Inn for about $150 per night, which sits inside the Fort Harrison State Park and is just 9 miles away from the Children’s Museum. Hit the 18-hole golf course or tour the park on horseback with the family, all of which the Inn can help you arrange.

No cars allowed on the historic Mackinac Island, where visitors are met at the ferry by bike rentals galore and horse-drawn carriages. Rock the afternoon away overlooking the Mackinac Harbor on the whitewashed porch of the Island House Hotel. Just steps away from The Original Mackinac Island Butterfly House and the must-see Fort Mackinac, where the kids will love firing the real life cannon (just make sure to make a reservation). Enjoy an evening of family entertainment at one of Branson’s live shows or walk through history at the Titanic Museum.

Nothing says getting nature like a treehouse cabin at the Natura Treescape Resort. This unique Wisconsin Dells property features a natural water park lagoon and sleeping quarters to accommodate any family’s needs from tiny houses and full treehouse cabins to standard guest rooms with bunks for the littles (prices start as low at $50 per night depending on time of year and accommodations). While visiting the Dells of the Wisconsin River, discover 14,000-year- old sandstone rock formations and private islands during a Dells Army Duck Ride. Get a little shopping and noshing done at the Bavarian village (don’t miss the giant Glockenspiel). And of course no visit to the Dells would be complete without a trip to the 51 water slides at Noah’s Ark Waterpark — the largest waterpark in the country

The premier midwest ski resort with its whopping 58 downhill slopes (28 lit so you can hit the slopes under the stars), multiple kid-friendly carpet lifts, and 25 km of cross country ski trails, Crystal Mountain is the perfect midwestern winter weekend getaway for any family. Kids can’t ski? Send them to ski school while you enjoy a Nirvana Stress Relief Massage in the 11,000 foot, state of the art Crystal Spa. Of course activities on the mountain are endless — did we mention Fat Tire Biking? But when there isn’t snow on the ground the Crystal Mountain is open to hikers and trail bikers, with outdoor yoga and even a 38-hole championship golf course. Get your kicks on Route 66 and bring the fam for a trip down the great American highway. Grab vintage diner and gas station memorabilia at the Route 66 Visitor Center before checking out all the classic cars at the Route 66 Car Museum. Step back into the 1950s with all of today’s tech (hello WiFi and Cable TV) at the super comfortable and centrally located Route 66 Best Western Rail Haven, where rooms start at around $100 per night. Take a break from all the vintage kitsch and head underground with a tram ride through the Fantastic Caverns — one of the natural wonders of the US. Don’t forget to wander through the Mizumoto Japanese Stroll Garden before diving into the educational Wonders Of Wildlife National Museum & Aquarium (which was voted American’s best aquarium).

Snowstorm across Midwest and Northern Plains bring blizzard conditions, power outages and travel chaos

A powerful winter storm is currently hammering the Midwest US and Northern Plains, bringing blizzard conditions, power outages and travel chaos to multiple states .

The National Weather Service has issued blizzard warnings from northern Colorado and Kansas through to parts of Minnesota, Nebraska and South Dakota on Monday, with between two and ten inches of snow expected to fall in some areas.

“Snow may accumulate at 1 to 2 inches per hour in heavier bands,” the weather service said.

The agency also warned that travel could be “near impossible at times” in affected areas , with winds of over 50 miles per hour expected to hit.

Strong winds could also cause widespread power outages, with falling trees hitting power lines.

It comes after a storm dumped more than two feet of snow on areas including Maine, New Hampshire and Vermont last week. Following last week’s storm, around 160,000 homes and businesses were still without power across the Northeast as of late Sunday night, according to PowerOutage.us.

Winter storm in Maine leaves 120,000 without power

Winds of over 50 miles per hour expected, causing power outages and travel chaos, 16 states currently under winter weather alerts.

According to the National Weather Service, 16 states are currently under winter eater alerts. Some parts of the country are expected to get several inches of snow while others will be pummeled with rain.

Large tree crushes car on Fifth Avenue amid heavy rainfall in NY

A giant tree fell on Fifth Avenue on Saturday, crushing a car amid heavy rainfall in New York.

More than 3.5 inches of rain fell in Central Park over the weekend, causing motorists to become trapped on flooded roads.

At least one car was crushed by a falling tree not far from the park, on Fifth Avenue, while three other cars were damaged.

The tree crunched the roof of a red sedan on Saturday night after it fell across the length of Fifth Avenue between East 94th Street to East 93rd Street. The roadway had to be closed for most of the night.

The city’s Department of Parks & Recreation dispatched a crew to remove the tree.

NYC Emergency Management cautioned people to be on alert for the potential for black ice after overnight temperatures dipped below freezing.

“New Yorkers are advised to take caution when driving due to the increased risk of black ice on roadways across the city,” its X account posted.

Mapped: Powerful winter storm tracking through the US

A powerful winter storm is currently moving through the US Midwest and Northern Plains.

The National Weather Service said rain and snow will continue through Tuesday with, three to five inches of snow falling across west central and central Minnesota.

Snowfall is expected to taper off quickly to the south and east, the agency added,

Heading into Tuesday and Wednesday night, much of the US will see much cooler air. However, the NWS has warned this could lead to a flash freeze scenario after a couple of days.

According to The Washington Post, here are some of the snowfall projections expected across the country this week:

• Dupree, South Dakota.: 12 inches
• Wausau, Wisconsin: 11 inches
• Eau Claire, Wisconsin: 10 inches
• Minnetonka, Minnesota: 7.4 inches
• Bloomington, Minnesota: 7.5 inches
• St. Cloud, Minnesota: 7.1 inches
• Bismarck, North Dakota: 3.2 inches

“Heavy snow and gusty winds will produce areas of blowing and drifting snow and possible blizzard conditions Sunday into Monday,” the National Weather Service has warned.

Power outages are expected across the region, with heavy, wet snow and falling trees hitting power lines.

Strong winds and heavy snow may also cause travel chaos, the NWS added, warning that travel could be “near impossible at times” in affected areas.

Hundreds of thousands of homes in Maine were left without power on Sunday night after a storm dumped more than two feet of snow on the state.

Around 120,000 homes and businesses were left without power in Maine on Sunday night, according to PowerOutage.us .

Central Maine said many power lines were grounded across the state after the storm blew through, with the utility company responding to more than 700 emergency calls on Sunday for issues including blocked roads and downed lines.

The company added that although it had restored power to more than 50 per cent of customers impacted by the storm as of Sunday night, restoration efforts in severely impacted coastal areas could last through Wednesday.

The Aurora Borealis was visible in parts of the US on Sunday night due to a rare geomagnetic storm.

A geomagnetic storm is a major disturbance to the Earth’s outer magnetic field most commonly caused by a strong surge of solar wind from the Sun known as a “coronal mass ejection,” according to the US Geological Survey.

The event meant the Northern Lights were visible in parts of he Pacific Northwest, Northern Plains, Great Lakes and interior Northeast on Sunday night.

Storms sweep the US from coast to coast causing frigid temps, power outages and traffic accidents

Heavy rain and quarter-sized hail fell in Southern California Sunday as the National Weather Service predicted lightning and wind gusts approaching 60 mph (97 kph) in the mountain area earlier in the day.

The California storm was moving south from the Sierra Nevada , where areas around Lake Tahoe received about a foot (30 cm) of new snow and Mammoth Mountain reported up to 18 inches (45 cm) by Sunday morning. A day earlier, the resort was forced to close several ski lifts after a 91-mph (147-kph) wind gust was recorded.

A 35-year-old woman was rescued after being swept away in the storm-swollen Los Angeles River, the LA Fire Department said. She was airlifted to a hospital with minor injuries and hypothermia, the department said.

Hardy souls across New England shoveling out after major snow storm

Hardy souls across New England were spending their Sunday shoveling out after a major storm dumped more than two feet of snow in some areas, causing multiple road accidents, downing power lines and leaving hundreds of thousands across the Northeast without electricity.

Road conditions were dangerous Saturday night for crews seeking to restore power, according to Central Maine Power, which said the company’s focus overnight was responding to emergency calls and making downed power lines safe.

As of daylight Sunday, crews began assessing and clearing damage to begin widespread power restoration efforts. The company said it anticipates a multi-day effort in areas hardest hit by the storm.

“Heavy snow and gusty winds approaching 50 mph will produce blizzard conditions with near zero visibility into early Tuesday,” the agency said in a news release. “Travel could be nearly impossible. Power outages and tree damage are likely in some areas due to the heavy and wet snow combined with icing and strong winds.”

The Aurora Borealis potentially visible on Monday due to storms

The Aurora Borealis will potentially be visible from the US, as far south as the Midwest. Observes wanting to catch a glimpse of the northern lights should find a dark place to look, such as a hill or beach that has an unobstructed view to the south. The best time to watch is between 10pm and 2am.

Snowfall expected to last until Wednesday

Officials with the National Weather Service are predicting that the snowfall could last until Wednesday , according to an advisory released on Monday.

Heavy snow and gusty winds approaching 50mph will create blizzard conditions with near zero visibility into early Tuesday, the release noted, making travel almost impossible.

Areas of the Mississippi Valley and Gulf Coast will experience scattered rain showers and thunderstorms in addition to a cold front on Monday. In Texas, tornadoes and damaging winds are possible in the eastern side of the state through the Lower Mississippi Valley, according to the Storm Prediction Center.

Severe rain could turn into flooding in southern Missouri through Arkansas, Mississippi and west-central Alabama.

Tornadoes leave a trail of destruction in Oklahoma, communities begin to assess damage

Multiple tornadoes tore across Oklahoma on Saturday night, leaving a wide trail of destruction, leveling homes and buildings and knocking out power for tens of thousands of residents and businesses. At least four people were killed in the state, including a child.

The region remained on high alert for severe weather after thunderstorms and tornados rolled through Friday and Saturday from Texas to the Great Lakes. About 106 tornadoes were detected in six states on Friday, with Nebraska and Iowa the hardest hit , officials said.

Officials in Pottawattamie County, in southwest Iowa by the Nebraska border, said one resident was killed and three others hurt by severe weather that hit Friday.

In Oklahoma, a tornado ripped through Holdenville, a small town of about 5,000 people, around 11 p.m. Saturday night, destroying or damaging several buildings in its path. Hughes County Emergency Medical Services said Sunday morning that at least four people were injured — three with major injuries — and two people died. The victims were an adult and a minor, it said, but did not provide any additional information.

On Sunday morning, Gov. J. Kevin Stitt declared an emergency disaster for 12 counties, including Carter, Cotton, Garfield, Hughes, Kay, Lincoln, Love, Murray, Okfuskee, Oklahoma, Payne, and Pontotoc. This will allow the state to provide the necessary help for these communities. He said in a video posted on  Facebook  that he plans to visit the impacted communities to assess the damage.

"You just can't believe the destruction," Stitt said. "It seems like every business downtown has been destroyed."

Stitt on Sunday spoke with President Biden, who "offered the full support of the federal government," the White House said in a statement.

In nearby Sulphur, a small town of about 5,000 people 80 miles south of Oklahoma City, at least two tornadoes were reported, while another hit Marietta and traveled directly over Interstate 35. One   person was killed near Marietta, according to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management.

Tornadoes in Sulphur and Marrietta were rated at least EF3 based on preliminary survey results, the National Weather Service said Sunday.

Videos and photos emerging on social media early Sunday morning showed heavy damage across Sulphur, including scattered bricks, wooden beams and toppled trees. Buildings in the downtown area had blown-out windows and missing walls across a 15-block radius.

Red Cross Oklahoma said it was opening a shelter in Sulphur and was in contact with officials to help with the immediate needs of affected residents throughout the state.

Communities in Garfield, Grant, Kay, Payne and several other counties in Oklahoma also suffered damage to homes and other structures, officials said.

The National Weather Service in Norman said early Sunday that flash flooding was now the primary threat after the tornado warnings were lifted.

Nearly 33,000 people in Oklahoma were without power on Sunday morning, according to  poweroutage.us , which tracks electric utility outages. In Texas, nearly 67,000 customers were without power.

In Kansas, the National Weather Service confirmed a "large and dangerous tornado" touched the ground near the town of Howard on Saturday afternoon. 

The National Weather Service confirmed Saturday that multiple tornadoes touched down in at least three North Texas counties the day before, including three tornadoes in Navarro County. Two of them were EF1 tornadoes with wind speeds more than 100 miles per hour. The third EF0 tornado touched down north of Frost. Some homes there are leveled with trees and metal lining the area.  

The Friday night tornadoes wreaked havoc in the Midwest , particularly in Nebraska and Iowa, causing a building to collapse with dozens of people inside and destroying and damaging hundreds of homes.

The sounds of chainsaws filled the air on Saturday in the Elkhorn neighborhood of Omaha, a city of 485,000 people with a metropolitan area population of about 1 million.

"We watched it touch down about 200 yards over there," Elkhorn resident Pat Woods told CBS News. "And then we went to get shelter and we came, but we could hear it going through. When we came back up, our fence was gone and we looked over to the northwest and the whole neighborhood is gone."

Nebraska Gov. Jim Pillen on Sunday issued emergency declarations for Douglas, Lancaster and Washington Counties.

The National Weather Service was still evaluating the number and strength of the twisters.

Midwest tornadoes cause severe damage in Omaha suburbs

OMAHA, Neb. — A tornado plowed through suburban Omaha, Nebraska, on Friday afternoon, damaging hundreds of homes and other structures as the twister tore for miles along farmland and into subdivisions. Injuries were reported but it wasn't yet clear if anyone was killed in the storm.

Multiple tornadoes were reported in Nebraska but the most destructive storm moved from a largely rural area into suburbs northwest of Omaha, a city of 485,000 people.

Photos on social media showed heavily damaged homes and shredded trees. Video showed homes with roofs stripped of shingles, in a rural area near Omaha. Law enforcement were blocking off roads in the area.

Hundreds of houses sustained damage in Omaha, mostly in the Elkhorn area in the western part of the city, police Lt. Neal Bonacci said.

Police and firefighters are now going door-to-door helping people who are trapped.

Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said crews had gone to the "hardest hit area" and had a plan to search anywhere someone could be trapped.

"They're going to be putting together a strategic plan for a detailed search of the area, starting with the properties with most damage," Bossman said. "We'll be looking throughout properties in debris piles, we'll be looking in basements, trying to find any victims and make sure everybody is rescued who needs assistance."

Omaha police Lt. Neal Bonacci said many homes were destroyed or severely damaged.

"You definitely see the path of the tornado," Bonacci said.

In one area of Elkhorn, dozens of newly built, large homes were damaged. At least six were destroyed, including one that was leveled, while others had the top half ripped off.

There were dozens of emergency vehicles in the area.

"We watched it touch down like 200 yards over there and then we took shelter," said Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn. "We could hear it coming through. When we came up our fence was gone and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood's gone."

His wife, Kim Woods added, "The whole neighborhood just to the north of us is pretty flattened."

Dhaval Naik, who said he works with the man whose house was demolished, said three people, including a child, were in the basement when the tornado hit. They got out safely.

KETV-TV video showed one woman being removed from a demolished home on a stretcher in Blair, a city just north of Omaha.

Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said there appeared to be few serious injuries, in part because people had plenty of warning that storms were likely.

"We not upon by a sudden storm," Schmaderer said. "People had warnings of this and that saved lives."

The tornado warning was issued in the Omaha area on Friday afternoon just as children were due to be released from school. Many schools had students shelter in place until the storm passed. Hours later, buses were still transporting students home.

Another tornado hit an area on the eastern edge of Omaha, passing directly through parts of Eppley Airfield, the city's airport. Officials closed the airport to aircraft operations to access damage but then reopened the facility, Omaha Airport Authority Chief Strategy Officer Steve McCoy said.

The passenger terminal wasn't hit by the tornado but people rushed to storm shelters until the twister passed, McCoy said.

Flight delays are expected Friday evening.

After passing through the airport, the tornado crossed the Missouri River and into Iowa, north of Council Bluffs.

Nebraska Emergency Management Agency spokesperson Katrina Sperl said damage is just now being reported. Taylor Wilson, a spokesperson for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, said they hadn't seen any injuries yet.

Before the tornado hit the Omaha area, three workers in an industrial plant were injured Friday afternoon when a tornado struck an industrial plant in Lancaster County, sheriff's officials said in an update on the damage.

The building just northeast of the state capital of Lincoln had collapsed with about 70 employees inside and several people trapped, sheriff's officials said. Everyone was evacuated, and three people had injuries that were considered not life-threatening, authorities said.

Sheriff's officials say they also had reports of a tipped-over train near Waverly, also in Lancaster County.

Two people who were injured when the tornado passed through Lancaster County were being treated at the trauma center at Bryan Medical Center West Campus in Lincoln, the facility said in a news release. It said the patients were in triage and no details were released on their condition.

The Omaha Public Power District reported that nearly 10,000 customers were without power in the Omaha area.

Daniel Fienhold, manager of the Pink Poodle Steakhouse in Crescent, Iowa, said he was outside watching the weather with his daughter and restaurant employees. He said "it looked like a pretty big tornado was forming" northeast of town.

"It started raining, and then it started hailing, and then all the clouds started to kind of swirl and come together, and as soon as the wind started to pick up, that's when I headed for the basement, but we never saw it," Fienhold said.

The Weather Service also issued tornado watches across parts of Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Oklahoma and Texas. And forecasters warned that large hail and damaging wind gusts were possible.

Biology student to pursue conservation work in China

If you want to see Yunfeng Ge’s face light up with joy, just ask about her love of birds and nature. A native of China, she was excited to explore all that Washington University in St. Louis’ biology program had to offer. 

Unfortunately, the pandemic delayed her on-campus experience, but Ge hit the ground running her sophomore year. She sought after opportunities on campus to develop friendships and get involved in research. 

“I want to emphasize the diverse research experience,” Ge said. “I don’t think every university has as many opportunities to get involved in research or a lab. I found my first lab by simply emailing a professor. The professors are really nice and care about students.”

As Ge prepares for life after graduating this month with a bachelor’s degree in biology from Arts & Sciences, she will take a gap year and return to China and do conservation work for nongovernmental organizations. She plans to apply to graduate school to study ecology and evolution. 

Here, Ge reflects on what she has learned and the research and volunteer work she completed during her time at WashU.

Favorite places to study nature

My favorite place to study nature in St. Louis is Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary. It’s an amazing place for waterfowl. I also love Forest Park’s wooded area. It’s an original Missouri oak-dominated forest, and it’s creating a small habitat for birds to stay during their migration. I go there almost every weekend.

I also love high-altitude mountains. I’ve been to Yellowstone National Park and Rocky Mountain National Park. I’ve been to the Tibetan Plateau in China. I’m attracted to those high-altitude landscapes because they have very different habitats. Even a few hundred meters higher or lower and there is a drastic difference in the ecosystem. I think that’s really amazing.

What were your favorite biology classes?

One of them is called “Field Methods for Environmental Science,” taught by Doug Ladd. We would go on field trips every Friday and learn different field techniques for environmental science. We also learned about conservation ranging from animals to insects and mammals and different ecosystems like rivers and forests.  I also loved the “Behavioral Ecology” class, taught by my mentor, Joan Strassmann. It’s a very different class setting. We did readings in class and had discussions. The big assignment for that class was for each student to write two Wikipedia pages. Wikipedia sometimes is not really scientifically accurate, but we made sure that we cited literature and to make it reliable. That’s so much better than just writing a thesis or a paper for class. We were really contributing to the science world. 

You are the founder and president of the WashU Bird Club . What has the club been able to accomplish?

I’m a very passionate birder. When I came to WashU, I realized there wasn’t a community for lovers of birding. I met another birder during a class, and we decided to start this club and it’s been pretty successful, in different kinds of ways. First of all, we created a place for birders at WashU. We also take weekend birding trips to Forest Park and Riverlands Migratory Bird Sanctuary during the semester. We’ve invited speakers and professors to give talks about their research.  We’re also doing conservation work. We started to notice there are bird and window collisions at some glass buildings on campus. It’s really easy, especially during migration seasons, for birds to collide into the windows and die. So we started doing monitoring as of spring-fall 2021. We created a Google form and people on campus can report the bird, so that we will know where the hotspot of bird collisions is.

What was your experience like as an undergraduate fellow at the Tyson Research Center?

I’ve gotten involved in all kinds of biodiversity research. When you work in the lab, you just work on one thing, but at Tyson there are all kinds of professors working on all kinds of different things. As a fellow there, I got involved in tick sampling and tick classification. I collected ticks in the field and used a microscope in the lab to identify the species based on some diagnostic keys.  I’ve also helped with wildlife monitoring in general. We have infrared deer cameras at Tyson, and every winter we set up cameras there. We did a national project looking at vegetation covers and different kinds of environmental variables affecting the breeding behaviors of amphibians like salamanders. I’ve also been involved in general vegetation surveys and insect surveys and also bird counting surveys.

The Bins on Old 66 take the concept of a retro roadside motel to the next level. At least 5 people, including infant, dead after night of tornadoes, storms in the Midwest

Dawn broke over scenes of devastation in several counties across Oklahoma on Sunday, with reports of severe structural damage, closed highways, blackouts, injuries and at least five deaths. There have been 35 reports of tornadoes overnight so far.

Twenty-seven million people remained at risk of severe weather into Sunday, including wind gusts, hail, flood risk and potentially more tornadoes.

Saturday's severe weather came less than 36 hours after more than 100 tornadoes leveled homes and buildings in six states Friday, with Nebraska and Iowa being hit hardest, officials said.

The National Weather Service office in Norman, Oklahoma, confirmed late Saturday that multiple tornadoes were in its area, including one near Davenport and more than one in the area of Sulphur, a small town of about 5,000 people 80 miles south of Oklahoma City, which appeared to have taken the biggest hit.

On Sunday, the weather service's Norman office said that, based on preliminary damage survey results, tornadoes with ratings of at least EF3 tore through Sulphur and Marietta in Oklahoma. The service said more investigation would be necessary to determine whether the rating will go higher.

The Murray County Emergency Management reported “significant damage” in Sulphur. In Love County, patients had to shelter during storms that damaged Marietta Hospital, though no injuries were reported, the county emergency management office said.

Also in Marietta, four semitrucks overturned, killing one person, after a tornado ripped through Interstate 35 on Saturday night, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said.

Oklahoma’s Office of Emergency Management confirmed three deaths, one near Marietta on I-35 and two others in Holdenville. Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt arrived Sunday afternoon in Sulphur, where he said a fourth person died in the downtown area.

One of the Holdenville victims was 4 months old, Stitt's press secretary said, citing Holdenville officials.

More than 170 storms were reported Saturday after days of severe weather. Storms were still expected through southern Missouri to southeast Texas on Sunday.

Flash flooding is also a concern for 18 million people from Kansas City to Lake Charles, Louisiana. Some flood warnings will continue into Monday.Video emerging on social media early Sunday showed heavy damage across Sulphur, including toppled trees and scattered bricks and wooden beams. Buildings in the downtown area sustained significant structural damage, including blown-out windows and missing walls. Others appeared to have been leveled and reduced to rubble.

The Oklahoma Health Department reported 100 injuries at area hospitals, according to the state Emergency Management Department. Of the injured, 25 were cut or had been pierced, 30 fell, 16 were hit by or struck against objects, 17 sustained transportation-related injuries, and 12 others were hurt by other means, the emergency services department said. The extent of each of the injuries was unclear.

Red Cross Oklahoma said early Sunday that it was opening a shelter in Sulphur and was in contact with officials in more than a dozen counties to help with the immediate needs of affected residents.

Stitt signed an executive order Sunday declaring a disaster emergency.

In neighboring Hughes County, officials reported four people injured, as well as several structures either damaged or destroyed, after a tornado ripped through its western part late Saturday.

On Sunday, Hughes County Emergency Management reported 14 homes were damaged or destroyed in Holdenville. In addition, officials said four properties were damaged in Okfuskee County, and Pottawatomie County Emergency Management reported seven damaged structures in Dale and unincorporated areas of Shawnee.

There were also "numerous injuries" and damaged structures in Wagoner County, officials said.

Homes and other structures were also damaged in communities in Garfield, Grant, Kay, Payne and several other counties in Oklahoma, officials said.

The National Weather Service in Norman said that as of 1:25 a.m. local time Sunday, some tornado warnings had passed but that flash flooding remained a threat.

Bruce Thoren, meteorologist for the agency's Norman branch, said teams will go out to the Marietta and Sulphur areas while others may be sent elsewhere through the week.

"We are aware of other places that received damage, but based on travel time and other factors they will be looked at in days to come, probably not today," Thoren said. "The area that we cover is pretty large compared to other forecast offices, so to travel down and back could be up to four hours. So we’ll for sure get there, and we know there’s damage — just trying to figure out where we go today."Oklahoma Gas and Electric Co. said early Sunday about 28,000 customers were without service as a result of the storms, primarily in southern Oklahoma.

The Oklahoma Transportation Department warned early Sunday that I-35 was closed in both directions in Love County because of storm damage cleanup.

More than 30 million people in Oklahoma City; Dallas; Wichita, Kansas; Omaha, Nebraska; Milwaukee; and Madison, Wisconsin, were in the path of severe weather Saturday.

This round of severe weather arrived even as parts of Nebraska and Iowa were still reeling from the damage caused by two tornadoes that struck the region.

Omaha Mayor Jean Stothert said Saturday that no deaths had been reported and that there were relatively few minor injuries.

Despite heavy damage to some residents' homes, including those belonging to three Omaha firefighters and two police commanders, officials Saturday were grateful it wasn't worse.Speaking at an afternoon news conference, Stothert said she planned to sign an emergency declaration, which would allow residents to tap state and federal recovery aid.

She credited the National Weather Service and local news media for warning the public about the tornadoes.

"I do want to thank our local forecasters for the clear and accurate warnings that they gave," she said. "I absolutely feel that this early warning, because of all of you, you prevented a lot of injury and probably death."

Lindsay Huse, health director for Douglas County, where Omaha is located, said by email that fewer than two dozen people suffered minor injuries. They were treated at medical facilities and have been released, she said.

"That's just miraculous," Huse said earlier at the news conference.

The National Weather Service assessed two tornadoes that struck the Omaha area Friday afternoon. One started in the area of Lincoln and ended up in western Douglas County, NWS meteorologist Chris Franks said at the news conference.It was preliminarily assessed at a "solid" EF3 on the 0-5 scale used by federal forecasters, he said. An EF3 tornado can produce sustained winds of 136-165 mph and shift homes off their foundations while peeling away exterior walls.

At Omaha Eppley Airfield, a tornado preliminarily assessed at EF2 struck Friday afternoon, Franks said. An EF2 tornado can produce sustained winds of 111-135 mph that can partly peel away rooftops and breach window glass.

Tornado activity was also reported in neighboring Iowa. Franks estimated that 80 tornadoes were reported in Douglas County and adjacent communities in Nebraska and Iowa on Friday.

In Lancaster County, Nebraska, a tornado was blamed for a train derailment and a semitruck rollover, according to National Weather Service notes on Friday's vortexes.

Omaha Police Lt. Neal Bonacci said hundreds of homes were damaged, most of them in the Elkhorn area in the western part of the city.

“You definitely see the path of the tornado,” Bonacci said.

Police and firefighters went door to door to help residents and search areas where people could be trapped, Omaha Fire Chief Kathy Bossman said.

"We’ll be looking throughout properties in debris piles, we’ll be looking in basements, trying to find any victims and make sure everybody is rescued who needs assistance," Bossman said.

Pat Woods, who lives in Elkhorn, told The Associated Press that he and his wife took shelter but could hear the tornado "coming through."

"When we came up, our fence was gone, and we looked to the northwest and the whole neighborhood’s gone," he said.

His wife, Kim Woods, said the neighborhood to the north of them was "pretty flattened."

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds declared a disaster emergency for Pottawattamie County after video on social media showed parts of Minden, about 30 miles northeast of Omaha, completely flattened.Jeff Theulen, the chief deputy of the Pottawattamie County Sheriff’s Office, said at a news conference Friday evening that 40 or 50 homes were "completely destroyed." There have been two reports of injuries, one "fairly severe but not life-threatening," he told reporters.

By Sunday, officials estimated that the storms had damaged 300 homes and businesses in the county, Pottawattamie County said in a release. In the city of Minden, 48 homes were "completely destroyed."

Pottawattamie County added in the release that four people sustained storm-related injuries. Three were treated and released Friday evening. The fourth, who was previously listed as stable in critical condition, died overnight Saturday.

"It's very dangerous right now. We've shut off entrance to the city except for the people that live here," he said, noting that "50% of the town is damaged badly and then there’s light damage everywhere else."

In nearby Shelby County, about 40 homes were damaged, county emergency coordinator Alex Londo said. Officials were assessing the destruction, he said, noting there have been no reports of deaths.

National Weather Service offices surveyed damage ahead of more severe weather expected Saturday.

The service reported 106 tornadoes Friday in Nebraska, Iowa, Texas, Kansas and Missouri. Another tornado was reported Friday morning in Pottawatomie County, Oklahoma.Oklahoma was also affected by the unstable air and thunderstorms that marched eastward Friday, but the weather service listed no confirmed tornadoes in the state.

Among Friday's tornadoes getting a preliminary assessment by the weather service were two near Waco, Texas — one believed to be at EF2 strength — and the other assessed at EF1 (86-110 mph).
