What’s more iconic than Paris, the city of light? Whether you’re flying into Orly or Charles de Gaulle, Paris is worth the stop. A city often mischaracterized by American tourists as being dirty or rude, the culture, architecture, and food of the French is unparalleled. Besides the obvious attractions like the Eiffel Tower, also make sure to see the Louvre, the Notre Dame de Paris, and the Arc de Triumphe.

London: it’s big, sprawling, and busy. And the amount of flights going through Heathrow or Gatwick make it the perfect stopover. While expensive and sometimes difficult to get around in, it’s worth visiting to see the sights. A unique mix of historical tradition and ultramodern architecture, Berlin is one of the most lively German cities to visit. Although most of Berlin’s historic value was destroyed by bombing campaigns during the second World War, the city has rebuilt rapidly and has become a hub for counter-culture art. Remnants of the Berlin Wall remain: other attractions include the Brandenburg Gate, the Berlin TV Tower, and the Reichstag building.

Besides tulips and coffeeshops, Amsterdam offers beautiful architecture, extensive canals throughout the city, the Van Gogh Museum, the Anne Frank house, and the Rijksmuseum. As one of the busiest airport hubs in the world is the perfect destination for a multi-stop trip.

Perhaps not the first European stop that comes to mind, Reykjavik is actually a great city to add to your itinerary because you can get there so affordably with a free stopover when flying Iceland Air. Although it’s a small city, you have immediate access to the amazing nature of Iceland. Drive around the Ring Road to see glaciers, geysers, volcanoes, and the iconic coastline. The nightlife of Reykjavik is also world-renowned!

As clean and pristine as the inner workings of a Swiss watch, Zurich is the perfect entryway to both Southern Germany and the Alps. On the shore of Lake Zurich, it is a global finance capital but also provides extensive sightseeing and cultural activities for the casual visitor. Are you looking for the best way to plan a multi-city trip to Europe? Well, you have come to the right place! I have planned multi-city trips to Europe for over a decade now.

Before I moved to Germany, I would save up and travel to Europe once a year. Traveling from the West Coast of the United States is a great distance.

Since I was making the 14-hour + plane ride to Europe, I wanted to see as much as possible. Over time I became an expert in planning multi-city trips to Europe.

The first trip I booked my multi-city itineraries , I messed up. There were several factors I wasn’t thinking about as I was buying airline tickets.

By the end of this post, you will have learned from my mistakes and have the confidence to plan your own multi-city trip!

Tricks & Tips to Travel Planning For Multi-Cities

The truth is trip planning is a lot of work . You need to have patience and be willing to make adjustments . I’ve learned the hard way it’s better to save that city for another time than squeeze it in.

It can take time to find that rhythm when planning itineraries to different countries. And if you are a solo traveler like me, try not to get too frustrated with yourself if a couple of things go wrong .

Sometimes, you just won’t be able to see everything you intended to. And that’s ok! Nowadays, I strive to make my trips the least stressful possible.

I don’t like to feel rushed, nor do I want to be bored. I’ve found that it can take a minute to get the hang of planning the “perfect trip.”

Remember, we are always evolving, and there will still be, “Next time, I’d do that part differently.” Go easy on yourself. There is a reason a whole profession is dedicated to making travel plans.

#1. Look At Your Flight Transit Times

The flight cost doesn’t always determine whether I will go to a city or not. Searching for a flight doesn’t take much time, and it’s great when you find a flight for 60 Euros, but is it departing at 11 pm?

If you are young and tireless, getting on a plane late at night probably isn’t a deal-breaker. However, flight times are crucial to me.

My ideal scenario is Direct flights leaving around 10 am with a total flight time of under 2 hours. I don’t want my entire day to be in transit.

This is why it is so important to consider transit times when planning a multi-city trip. It also brings me to my next multi-city trip travel hack.

A significant tip for booking a multi-city trip is how you search for your flights. Be prepared that this step can take hours, depending on how many cities you plan to see.

A trick to use is always to check the roundtrip price and the one-way price. Sometimes the roundtrip price is lower!

#3. Consider Your Airport to Destination Travel Time

The next how-to plan a multi-city trip to Europe tip plays a huge role in my bookings.

Consider this essential factor when squeezing into another city on your trip.

You will want to ask the question, “How far is your hotel from the airport? ”

I will give you an example of a more extended travel day scenario that you might overlook. If starting from Copenhagen and traveling to Barcelona, you might think nothing of the 3-hour flight.

But, travel time from the airport to the city center of Barcelona by train is an additional 1-hour minimum.

If you add in your transit time to the airport plus time before the flight (1 1/2 ahead of time), it adds up. This quick trip 3-hour flight has doubled with all the transit factors.

You now can see how a massive chunk of your day will be consumed by just getting there.

*But, there is a 1 hour time difference in your favor for these major cities.

If you are traveling to Europe for a month, then spending more time in transit can be ok. But, this is something to consider when you only have a short 2 weeks .

Planning the perfect multi-city trip in Europe is finding the best places that work with the shortest time in between them.

#5. Add Transit Service At Arrival For Convenience

Consider how many bags you will have when you land, and if it’s more than just a carry-on, book a transit service to pick you up .

I am all for taking public transportation, but why add an extra layer of stress to the end of a long flight by trying to navigate it?

#6. Research Your Options With Trains & Buses

Sometimes you need to get creative to see the bucket list of European destinations you have in mind. I will give you another example of my trip to Spain.

I was visiting Barcelona, but I also really wanted to visit Seville! The flights from Barcelona to Seville were not feasible. The transit times and the prices within the times I wanted to go, just didn’t make sense for me. Then I looked at flights from Valencia to Seville and found some great deals.

The train travel time from Barcelona to Valencia is about 2 hours and 40 minutes. So I decided to add in 2 nights in Valencia and then fly from Valencia to Seville. This meant I had to axe visiting Granada for this trip, but it was the most efficient way to make my itinerary work.

I personally always prefer train travel over buses and flights. And, don’t worry, 2 years later, I made it to Granada ; )

#7. Utilize Multi-Planner Sites

One of the best things you can do when planning a long journey is to use websites that make all the choices easier.

A good option to act as your Europe trip planner is using a site like Omino Travel. It will drastically improve your ability to make the proper choices with destinations.

#8. Pick The Right Number Of Nights To Stay

This is a critical factor to consider when booking multi-city trips. You want to find the perfect number of nights to stay. Nothing worse than overstaying or not staying long enough in a city.

My general rule is to stay a minimum of three to four nights max in a big city . I always recommend booking for three nights if you have to fly there. Otherwise, you will feel rushed. Even when it’s a quick flight, the airport experience can be draining; better to have three nights . Plus, you lose more time when you fly.

If I roll up into a city by train, like when I visited Valencia, you can get away with a two-night stay. Although it all depends on when you first arrive in the city, if I arrive after 4 pm, I will stay another night for a total of three.

A great way to tackle the city sights quickly is by doing either a bike tour or a bus tour. When I plan my stay in a city, I always try to incorporate this on the first day of arriving. When given a broad overview of the town, I can spend the remaining time I have returning to the sites that piqued my interest.

#9. Don’t Forget To Budget For The Transit Cost

How to plan a multi-city trip to Europe is all about budgeting . It is vital because if you don’t plan it out, you could spend a lot more than you need to. Finding cheap flights is key, but there are also other transit costs I research thoroughly in the planning process.

Always keep in mind the cheapest and fastest way to the transit hub. If you were to just arrive at the airport not having researched your options for the city center, you could waste a lot of money.

Understanding my transit options seems like a no-brainer. But, when I first started traveling, I just thought I would figure it out when I get there. I didn’t do any research.

My first instinct was just to take a taxi. I didn’t assume that would be the cheapest way, but I thought it would be the fastest. I learned the hard way that was not always true.

Sometimes a taxi will take double the time a train would. And not to mention triple or more the cost.

#10. Can It Just Be A Day Trip?

The more I travel, the more I learn! Going from one city to the next can be exhausting. It’s usually worth it, but it takes a lot of energy.

I used to think it was always better to stay a night at the next destination, not considering alternatives. So that leads me to another multi-city trip travel hack. Can it be a day trip?

When I research another city for a day trip, I rate the best option by how long it will take me to get there. I consider somewhere under 2 hours on a high-speed train to be a great choice.

If it takes a lot of time to get there, say more than 2 hours, I think a little more about staying the night. A great example was when I visited Verona from Bologna.

I had always wanted to visit Verona and wasn’t finding an easy way to get there from Berlin. After researching, I booked a 3-night trip to Bologna and planned to squeeze in a day trip to Verona.

I opted for just the day trip since Verona was only 2 hours from Bologna. Not having to lug your bag and spend time checking into a new hotel allows for more time to relax…and drink wine.

Verona is a very small city, so it was the perfect day trip! The day trip doesn’t always work if the city is more significant in size. For example, going to Florence for a day is a bit more ambitious.

I made just the day trip and felt I desperately need more time to see it all.

Don’t Overstay Your Schengen Welcome!

When planning a trip to Europe, it’s crucial for travelers, especially those from non-European Union countries, to understand the Schengen 90/90 rule.

This rule is a cornerstone of the travel regulations within the Schengen Area, a zone comprising 26 European countries that have abolished passports and other types of border control at their mutual borders.

What is the Schengen 90/90 Rule?

The Schengen 90/90 rule allows travelers to stay for up to 90 days within any 180-day period in the Schengen Area.

This rule is designed to prevent individuals from staying indefinitely in the Schengen zone under a tourist visa.

• 90 Days Maximum : You can stay for up to 90 days in the Schengen Area for tourism, business, or visiting family and friends.
• Rolling Period : The 180-day period is a rolling window. It’s not fixed to any calendar dates but is counted backward from the date you are in the Schengen Area.

How to Calculate Your Stay:

The count resets after you’ve been out of the Schengen Area for 180 consecutive days.

Plan A Multi-City Trip To Europe With Carry-On Only

Every pro traveler will tell you, don’t check a bag . Determine how to dumb down your travel style and bring only the essentials.

Pro Tip: Lighten your load by leaving the heels at home.

When I pack for 2 weeks in Europe , I pack two types of shoes, cute flats that can be suitable for dinner, and comfortable boots or sneakers (one or the other).

When you are going between different cities, nothing will slow you down faster than an overpacked, oversized bag. It will limit your ability to take public transit comfortably. I recently took a long trip, (four weeks) with a small carry-on suitcase and couldn’t have been happier.

My trick was that at least once per week on that trip, I booked an Airbnb that had a washing machine. I also wore leggings most of the time.

You think you will want to have all these cute, stylish outfits to choose from, but in reality, you will want to be comfortable. The best thing about my travel style is that it is simple. It’s all black with some different accessories.

Wearing a tight pair of jeans to dinner can undoubtedly take the fun out of eating homemade pasta in Cinque Terre.

Don’t Forget About Travel Documents Rea d iness

Being an organized traveler is essential when tackling a multi-city itinerary. If you have never been to the destination before, check to see if you need a visa, how long you can stay, and if you need insurance.

Again, this might seem like a duh; I would know if I need a visa. My advice is to double-check . I will reveal my stupidity here, and it’s an embarrassing one. Years ago, when I visited Sri Lanka, I needed a visa. But I was flying through India, and don’t ask me why, but I thought I just needed a visa for India.

I knew Sri Lanka was a country, but somehow in my stressed-out brain, I thought a visa for India would cover my entry to Sri Lanka.

To my surprise and horror, I didn’t have a visa upon arriving in Sri Lanka . Luckily, I could just walk over and obtain it at the visa-on-arrival desk. But could you imagine if I couldn’t?

Travel planning is a lot of work, and even the most obvious requirements slip your mind.

✈️ Here is another critical tip I hadn’t previously known. If you have a middle name on your passport , make sure it’s on your ticket. Otherwise, you could be refused boarding.

I have read articles where passengers have been turned away from boarding the plane because the passport name didn’t match the ticket name exactly.

Do I really need insurance?

Spoiler alert. You need it, and I can’t stress enough how important travel insurance is when planning a multi-city trip. When you travel from city to city or country to country, your mishap chances go up. It is so smart to protect yourself for such a small price .

I know it’s tempting to use that added cost of insurance money for something more exciting, like a more delightful hotel. But don’t do it. Travel insurance is something that can cover you for an array of issues that could arise. The piece of mind is worth every penny.

How to Plan a Multi-Country Trip to Europe

Itinerary #1.

Start your European vacation in Copenhagen, Denmark ! Copenhagen is very close to other great destinations in Europe.

It’s a relatively small city with excellent transportation. Easily visit Malmo or Helsingborg, Sweden, for a day trip.

When you are ready to move on, check out one of my favorite cities, Amsterdam. One of the first things to do in Amsterdam is a canal tour! Check out my complete guide to Amsterdam for more itinerary ideas!

After you’ve had enough time in The Netherlands, consider taking a high-speed train to Germany!

Western Europe is well connected by train, you will have no problem getting around.

Nearby Bremen would be the perfect next stop! If you are looking for more ideas in Germany , I have loads for you!

Itinerary #2

Another European itinerary for multi-city travel starts in Salzburg, Austria ! Salzburg is the perfect size city to stroll around for a couple of days.

When I visited Salzburg, I found the best food tour that also took me to all the top sites in the city!

Then when you are ready to move on, quickly travel by train to Lake Bled, Slovenia !

Lake Bled is an excellent place to relax and unwind, especially in the summer. Only an hour away from Lake Bled is the capital city of Ljubljana !

Itinerary #3

The final itinerary is a budget-friendly one for European travel. A good idea is to fly into Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina ! This eastern European city is ideal for a few days. I visited Sarajevo on a solo trip and felt safe taking the transit alone.

The best time to visit the Balkans is in October when the weather is much milder.

A day trip suggestion from Sarajevo would be to go to Mostar !

When you are ready to explore another country, fly to Romania , and explore some idyllic villages.

You can easily rent a car in Romania and drive to places such as Brasov, an ideal destination in October !

Final Thoughts on Booking Multi-City Trips to Europe

Planning a multi-city European vacation takes a lot of time, but it is essential to ensure you have the best trip possible.

I would highly suggest you don’t be an aggressive multi-city trip planner for your first trip. If you have 2 weeks, make it 2 major cities, and sprinkle in some day trips!

If you’re like most people and getting time off work or kids out of school is challenging, you may only be able to manage one week of vacation. Europe is a great destination to go for one week, simply because of the cultural diversity in such a small geographic area.

The small size, proximity, and ease of transportation between many of the countries in Europe make it a good choice for a culturally rich one week holiday. If you’ve only got one week in Europe, and really want to maximize your time, but you’re wondering where to go in Europe, here are 20 perfect one-week Europe travel itineraries.

• Before You go to Europe

Europe is an amazing destination, especially if you pick any of these awesome itineraries, but before leaving there are a few things you should consider when planning your Europe trip:

• KNOW BEFORE YOU GO: Before you go to Europe, be sure you follow my 50 travel tips for Europe. You can find those here. 

And the winter months are generally cold in most European countries, especially in the north.That doesn’t mean you should avoid those times, it just depends on your tolerance for crowds and your preference in weather.

• WHAT TO PACK FOR EUROPE: What you pack for Europe will highly depend on what time of year you go and where you decide to go. This  packing guide for Europe will ensure you have the essentials.
• GETTING AROUND: Getting around Europe can be a little daunting, but if you do some research before you go, you’ll be just fine. Transportation in every country in Europe is a little different. Some itineraries will require you to go by train, car, plane or boat. Travel around Europe doesn’t have to be scary if you learn what to do ahead of time.

If you’re renting a car, there are two companies we prefer to use: Rental Cars and Expedia Cars. We have had no issues with them and have been able to find the best prices available.

What to do in Europe for One Week: 20 European Vacation Ideas for Your Europe Trip

These are my best one week vacations in Europe. Taking a multi city European vacation can be a great way to experience several different cultures on one continent. I know that one week in Europe isn’t a lot of time, so I’ve picked cities that are either close in proximity or a quick and cheap flight between each other.

I’ve also tried to choose each Europe travel itinerary with a mix of classic sites and unique destinations. There are so many cool places to visit in Europe that are still undiscovered. Hopefully, some of these locations will be new to you and you’ll be able to discover a new European favorite!

This is one of my very favorite European vacation destinations. There are hundreds of choices for stunning history and scenery when you visit Italy, but this Amalfi Coast and Rome itinerary gives you the best of both worlds. Rome is one of the top places to visit in Europe and offers history around every corner…literally, while on the Amalfi Coast you will be overwhelmed by breathtaking ocean views.

Spend several days in Rome, then head south to the Amalfi Coast via Naples and spend a few more relaxing on the beach and driving the coast. It’s one of the best European beach vacations you can take! Amalfi is also one of the most popular Europe vacation spots during the month of August, so you may want to take that into consideration when planning your trip.

If you’re looking for a European vacation with a lot of history and class, this is it! I can’t even count the number of times that I have done the Paris/London combo. I’ve done it with kids, as a couple, as a girls’ trip, and as a field trip. No joke! And every time I go, it’s like completely different cities. You can follow completely different options for London and Paris itineraries and have an amazing time no matter what you choose. In my opinion, these are two of the best cities to visit in Europe as they offer a huge amount of culture, food, and entertainment bang for your buck!

When I plan our family trip to Europe each year, I make sure to always include both Paris and London. These are two of my favorite places in all of Europe. They are popular for good reason. Both Paris and London are so vast and diverse that you can have a new experience each time you visit. The best part about visiting these two cities is that they are very easy to travel between with the help of the Eurostar. It’s a quick journey from the heart of one city to the next that requires no airports, no flying, and no hassle. Note: You will need a   passport or visa   to travel between England and France and you will need to go through customs before boarding the Eurostar.

This one-week European itinerary includes two of my favorite cities in Europe! Heidelberg, Germany, known for its ancient castle and walkable downtown is a perfect companion to Strasbourg, France only an hour and a half away, in the Alsace region of France, known for its impressive cathedral and half-timber houses. These towns are particularly spectacular during the Christmas season and some of the best places to spend Christmas in Europe. If you want to spend your Europen vacation wandering charming streets and feeling like you’re in a fairytale, this is it. Basel, Switzerland holds a special place in my heart and is often an overlooked town. Only a quick 45-minute train ride from the popular and iconic Colmar, France, Basel offers a unique culture that only a town on the border of three countries can. If you’d like your Europe trip to have a good mix of beach and mountain time, this is the perfect combination. Lake Como is probably one of my top favorite places on the planet. It is totally magical and peaceful, and I’ve written about it multiple times and helped friends and family plan trips there. Don’t skip Lake Como on your next trip to Italy. One of my favorite parts of Lake Como is its proximity to the Swiss border. You can actually hike over the borer and into Switzerland! But if you’d rather not hike, hop in the car and take a trip to Zermatt, Switzerland, home of the famous towering mountain, Matterhorn.

This is a European vacation full of charm, but also a healthy dose of history and reality. A Paris-Normandy itinerary of Europe combines all the glamor and romance of the city of light with the charm, history, and beauty of Northern France. Spend several days in Paris, taking several day trips, including the impressive floating Mont Saint Michel. This area is one of the best places to visit in Europe for history lovers.

Some of my favorite Italian destinations, Venice and Lake Como, both built on water, are ideal locations for aquatic enthusiasts. Taking a ride on a gondola in Venice is one of the best things to do in Europe! Take the Vaporetto (water bus) in Venice, then take a short drive or train ride to Lake Como and enjoy boating and relaxing on the beach in one of the adorable villages lining the lake.

If you’re interested in cheap Europe trips, the gorgeous Ionian islands of Greece are one of the best-kept secrets in Europe. Naturally and culturally diverse, affordable, and downright beautiful, Kefalonia and Corfu make great choices for one week in Europe.

Explore ancient ruins, relax on pristine beaches with locals, and dine, affordably, like a Greek god. If you’re travelling Europe on a budget, this is a great option and Greece is one of the best places to visit in Europe in summer if you’re looking for gorgeous beaches at affordable prices.

Two countries on one island? Yep! Take a visit to Ireland AND Northern Ireland. Two countries that are very similar, but also very different. Explore the entire island with this perfect itinerary.

Scotland is one country that should really be given an entire week. You could definitely say that about any destination, but for a relatively small country, but it has so much to offer that you could spend years here and not see it all.

What could be more charming than a week spent in these “poor provincial towns.” Ok, so they’re definitely not poor or provincial, but you’ll feel like you’ve stepped into Belle’s hometown from Beauty and the Beast .

The ancient half-timber homes built along scenic rivers provide a feast for the eyes, while the patisseries, boulangeries, shops, and restaurants provide a feast for the tongue. Split your time between these two idyllic towns and enjoy a peaceful trip back in time.

If you visit Colmar or Strasbourg during Christmas, these towns will be even more magical! Strasbourg is known as “The Capital of Christmas” and both towns have incredible Christmas markets and decorations!

This London and Cotswolds Itinerary provides the best of both British worlds, encompassing both the hustle and bustle of one of the world’s oldest and largest cities and the peace and tranquility of the quaint cottage speckled Cotswolds.

As much as I love London (it’s my favorite city), I do get tired of the crowds and the constant noise. I call this itinerary the best of Northern Italy. Italy is huge and has so much to offer geographically and culturally, but one of my favorite parts of Italy is the train system. The trains in Italy allow for easy access to most major sites, but it can be slightly confusing, so be sure to read this guide to train travel in Italy before you go. Getting between Florence and Cinque Terre is simple with the right knowledge.

I think Prague and Vienna might be some of the most underrated cities in Europe, and they are worth dedicating an entire week to. Stunning architecture, delicious cuisine, and cultural activities abound in these cities that are just a few hours apart.

If you’re looking for cheap European vacations, the farther east you go, the cheaper it generally gets. These are two cities that had never really been on my bucket list, and to be honest, I had never even heard of Bratislava, which is in Slovakia by the way! Both cities are charming and culturally rich. They are especially festive and beautiful around Christmas time.

Bratislava is on the way between Budapest and Vienna (you can even cycle between Budapest and Vienna ) and Budapest and Prague, so if you’re thinking of doing a combination of any of those cities, it’s a great stop.

These incredible destinations in Italy are not well known, but that is part of the appeal. I would say they are a good option for a cheaper and less crowded alternative to the  Florence and Cinque Terre itinerary.

Lisbon is a stunning city and the Algarve region in the south of Portugal offers sunny beaches with world-famous surfing. There are some really cheap flights to Lisbon from the US right now and you can either drive, train, bus, or fly to the Algarve easily. As a southern European country, Portugal is a great choice for a winter destination. We were there last January and could still get in the water. There are many towns to choose from in the Algarve and they are all equally unique and beautiful.

The Perfect Portugal Itinerary

This one week in Europe spent in Austria is a dream. Combining the culture of Vienna and Salzburg with the picturesque feel of Hallstatt, it’s sure to satisfy any traveler. In my opinion, this is a great winter destination if you don’t mind the cold. Vienna and Salzburg have several amazing Christmas markets and Hallstatt is simply a dream to see in the snow!

If you’re into coastal towns, walled cities, and breathtaking scenery, this combination is for you. The Dalmation Coast is absolutely stunning. The bordering country of Montenegro is really the hidden gem of Europe, offering the same draw as Croatia, but with far fewer tourists. I recommend going during shoulder season (April-May or September-October) to be able to enjoy warmer weather with fewer crowds.

Two of the most underrated cities in Europe if you ask me, Budapest and Bratislava are both cities that offer an amazing array of culture and also incredible food. If you’re up for the cold weather, these cities all have incredible Christmas markets and stunning decorations around the holidays. These cities are also all connected by rail so you can easily navigate between them. 

GETTING THERE: Fly into Vienna or Budapest GETTING BETWEEN DESTINATIONS: Take the train between each city. Bratislava would be a good day trip from Vienna.

25 | Berlin + Prague

If you love history and architecture, then these two cities will captivate you! Split your time between the two, rent a car and take a road trip between them to enjoy some beautiful scenery. 

GETTING THERE: Fly into either Berlin or Prague, whichever airport is cheaper.  GETTING BETWEEN DESTINATIONS: Rent a car and take a road trip between Berlin and Prague.

Whichever Europe Itinerary you choose, you’re guaranteed to love it. You can definitely see so much of Europe in a week and you really can’t go wrong with any of these choices. Just remember to relax and enjoy and also remember that this probably won’t be the last Europe trip of your lifetime.

Always Get Travel Insurance Travel insurance protects you and your family against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s peace of mind in case anything goes wrong. I never travel without it. 4. Is there a secret trick to the best way to book multi-city trips?

For me, a travel writer, it’s always about saving time. If I’m avoiding unnecessary layovers or connections , it means I have more time to explore my destination . If I spend all my time having to book multiple tickets and checking in multiple times, I am not spending my limited hours venturing around and meeting new humans. Of course, I also love to add extra legs to my trip.

I’ve added stopovers in Africa, like Nairobi en route to Johannesburg, in order to get some time in Kenya. Many airlines actually encourage this, too – with special offers and what they call “free stopovers” in places like Iceland and Portugal. And let’s face it, being able to mix and match also means I am actively curating and customizing my travel schedules.

How was this guide created?

I have been on the road, roughly 200 days every year , for the better part of two decades. As you can imagine I am constantly taking multiple flights and having to puzzle out my travel. What I like to do is spend time online finding interesting routes to fly – who knew you could get to Paris via Morocco! And then I often crowdsource and ask friends what they are doing with their itineraries, as I am always learning something new. It isn’t a perfect science, of course, but I love to be able to keep things a little more flexible.

Multi-city flights FAQ

In fact, you can save money on flights by combining multiple destinations into one ticket. Sometimes, especially during peak season or between the most popular routes, booking a multi-city flight can be cheaper than booking multiple one-way tickets. And you can avoid all the search time looking for one-way tickets all over the globe.

Most airlines release their flight schedules around 11 months, or so, before the dates. With international travel, there are some rules worth following – summer months are very busy and thus demand goes up, and you might not be able to get the exact flights you are after. A good rule of thumb is to start looking roughly 6 months before your specific travel dates, and not wait much later than 3 months before you’re planning to get into the skies.

This is a type of multi-city flight. It means that you fly into one city and out of another. For example, you can book an open-jaw flight from New York to Boston, then take the train to Providence, Rhode Island from Boston, and then fly back to New York from Providence. This way, you can explore all these places in a way that you would like, without having to necessarily backtrack or return to your original destination.

Rome , Italy’s capital, is a sprawling, cosmopolitan city with nearly 3,000 years of globally influential art, architecture, and culture on display. Ancient ruins such as the Forum and the Colosseum evoke the power of the former Roman Empire. Vatican City, headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church, has St. Peter’s Basilica and the Vatican Museums, which house masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel frescoes. The 18th-century Spanish Steps sit at the heart of Rome’s high-end shopping district, with designer boutiques lining Via Condotti and Via Borgognona. Visitors toss coins into the iconic, baroque Trevi Fountain. The Pantheon, dating to the second century A.D., holds Raphael’s Renaissance-era tomb. It has no roads, just canals – including the Grand Canal thoroughfare – lined with Renaissance and Gothic palaces. The central square, Piazza San Marco, contains St. Mark’s Basilica, which is tiled with Byzantine mosaics, and the Campanile bell tower offering views of the city’s red roofs. The Gothic pink-and-white-marble Doge’s Palace sits on the east side of the piazza. Before the Christian holiday of Lent, this area becomes the epicenter of Venice's Carnival, where partygoers dress in elaborate masks and costumes. A gondola ride away is the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, an influential gallery of modern art, and the Galleria dell'Accademia, a museum of Renaissance-era and Vedutisti paintings. The covered Rialto footbridge leads to a market that supplies many of the city's fish-focused Venetian restaurants.

Florence , the capital of Italy’s Tuscany region, is home to many masterpieces of Renaissance art and architecture. One of its most iconic sights is the Duomo, a cathedral with a terracotta-tiled dome engineered by Brunelleschi and a bell tower by Giotto. The Galleria dell'Accademia displays Michelangelo’s “David” sculpture. The Uffizi Gallery exhibits Botticelli’s “The Birth of Venus” and da Vinci’s “Annunciation.” Another architectural highlight is the Ponte Vecchio, a medieval stone-arch pedestrian bridge that’s packed with jewelry stores. Near the bridge, on the south bank of the Arno River, is massive Palazzo Pitti, once home to the powerful Medici family, showing works by such renowned artists as Raphael and Titian. Milan , a metropolis in Italy's northern Lombardy region, is a global capital of fashion and design. Home to the national stock exchange, it’s a financial hub also known for its high-end restaurants and shops. The Gothic Duomo di Milano cathedral and the Santa Maria Delle Grazie convent, housing Leonardo da Vinci’s mural “The Last Supper,” testify to centuries of art and culture. The cathedral shares the central Piazza del Duomo with the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II. This glass-roofed, 19th-century arcade is now home to luxury shopping and upscale cafes serving classic Milanese food such as risotto and osso buco veal stew. Milan’s cultural scene centers on the 18th-century Teatro Alla Scala opera house and the Pinacoteca di Brera gallery, which houses centuries of Italian painting by artists such as Titian and Caravaggio. Twice a year the Quadrilatero d'Oro fashion district buzzes when catwalks take over neoclassical palaces for the famous Milan Fashion Weeks.

Amalfi is a town in a dramatic natural setting below steep cliffs on Italy’s southwest coast. Between the 9th and 11th centuries, it was the seat of a powerful maritime republic. The Arab-Norman Sant'Andrea cathedral at the heart of town, with its striped Byzantine facade, survives from this era. The Museo Arsenale Amalfi is a medieval shipyard-turned-exhibition space. Amalfi’s Chiostro del Paradiso has 13th-century Moorish cloisters around a tropical garden. The Valle dei Mulini ravine above the town is home to the Museo Della Carta (Museum of Paper), in a 13th-century mill with original working paper presses. Hiking trails in the valley overlook lemon groves and pastel buildings on hillside terraces. Many use the town as a base for exploring the beaches, forests, and mountains of the surrounding Amalfi Coast, picturesque Positano, and the hillside gardens and villas of Ravello. The Colosseum or Coliseum , also known as the Flavian Amphitheatre, is an oval amphitheater in the center of the city of Rome, Italy. Built of travertine limestone, tuff, and brick-faced concrete, it was the largest amphitheater ever built at the time and held 50,000 to 80,000 spectators. The Colosseum is situated just east of the Roman Forum. Construction began under the emperor Vespasian in AD 72 and was completed in AD 80 under his successor and heir, Titus. Further modifications were made during the reign of Domitian. These three emperors are known as the Flavian dynasty, and the amphitheater was named in Latin for its association with their family name. The Colosseum could hold an estimated 50,000 to 80,000 spectators at various points of its history over the centuries, having an average audience of some 65,000; it was used for gladiatorial contests and public spectacles such as mock sea battles, animal hunts, executions, re-enactments of famous battles, and dramas based on Classical mythology. The building ceased to be used for entertainment in the early medieval era.

Florence Cathedral, formally the Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, is the cathedral of Florence, Italy. It was begun in 1296 in the Gothic style to a design of Arnolfo di Cambio and was structurally completed by 1436, with the dome engineered by Filippo Brunelleschi.

The Pantheon is a former Roman temple, now a Catholic church, in Rome, Italy, on the site of an earlier temple commissioned by Marcus Agrippa during the reign of Augustus. It was completed by the emperor Hadrian and probably dedicated to about 126 AD.

The Trevi Fountain is a fountain in the Trevi district in Rome, Italy, designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Giuseppe Pannini and several others. Standing 26.3 meters high and 49.15 meters wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world.

Piazza San Marco , often known in English as St Mark's Square, is the principal public square of Venice, Italy, where it is generally known just as la Piazza. All other urban spaces in the city are called campi. The Piazzetta is an extension of the Piazza towards the San Marco basin in its southeast corner. The two spaces together form the social, religious, and political center of Venice and are commonly considered together. A remark usually attributed to Napoleon calls the Piazza San Marco "the drawing room of Europe"

Walk – Bring comfortable shoes and get ready to walk a lot when in Italy. Italy is one of those beautiful places that only by walking can you really take in all it has to offer. In addition to the fact that you will save a ton of money, walking really is the best way to explore all of the major attractions as well as many beautiful corners of the cities you'll visit. Make sure to stop for a picture, sit in a cafe, and enjoy all the little things Italy has to offer. Honestly, everything is so walkable that you almost don’t need to take the metro or taxi at all.

Explore nearby towns by train - Train tickets in Italy can be booked up to 120 days in advance, and you can make some great savings by booking early. Make the most of Italy's excellent rail service by visiting nearby cities. In a few hours, you could make the journey from Rome to Florence, Milan, or even Venice. What some people might not realize is that there are also regional trains you can take to explore nearby towns that are extremely charming and beautiful. For example, if you are in Rome, take the train or bus to Ostia, the nearest Italian seaside town that gives you a completely different feeling of Italy when compared to Rome. In fact, many Romans spend the summer holidays here, so you can experience summer like a local. Another town recommended by our Founder is called Castel Gandolfo. This stunning town overlooks Lake Albano and is only 40 minutes away from Termini’s station (Rome’s main train station). It’s so beautiful, so much so that the Pope picked it for his summer home.

Validate your train ticket - If you buy your train ticket from the ticket vending machines at the station anywhere in Italy, you need to “validate” your ticket at the green-colored machine near the platform before you get on the train. This is to show where you got onto the train. If you don't validate your ticket, you can be fined 100 euros or more - so don't forget to do it!

Free Water - Bottled water is not free in any restaurant in Italy, however, the tap water and water fountains across the city are free and drinkable. Don’t waste money by spending on bottled water, instead, bring a water bottle with you and make use of the free fountains are pretty much everywhere in the city.

Local Market and/or Supermarket – Food is actually quite cheap at the outdoor, local markets, as well as the supermarkets, compared to the US. If you would like to try some authentic local food such as wine, cheese, and pasta, you have to try these places. You can grab a bargain and still eat well!

Avoid unauthentic restaurants – The best way to spot if you are dealing with an unauthentic restaurant or not is simply this: If it’s an authentic restaurant, you won’t see any waiter standing outside and asking you to come to eat. These places in Italy have tourist menus with average, overly priced food. Our founder, Kate Stone, shared what she learned from many trips to Italy and from a friend who once worked in this type of restaurant. Waiters are actually trained to add 15-20% onto the bill, specifically to target those who seem to really enjoy their surroundings and are not paying much attention. Those who don’t speak English may not realize this too, and most tourists don't check their bills and pay for it anyway. We recommend that, for more authentic Italian food, go to a place where you can spot locals, or simply head to a pizzeria where pizza ranges from EUR 5-10!

Free attractions - In Italy, you are surrounded by art and history. Unless you want to dive deep into the details and learn more from a guided tour, you can really skip on all the paid tours. Many main attractions are actually free to walk around, you can enter some parts without any admission fees at all. Most of the churches and parks are also free unless specifically stated, and they not only provide shade from the sun but are a haven for Italian art.
