You Can Stay Overnight at One of the US's Most Notorious Murder Houses, and the Photos Will Give You Chills
Updated on 9/7/2020 at 11:35 AM
If you're a fan of true crime and don't get spooked easily , you probably already know all about the Villisca Ax Murder House in Iowa. Now a historical site, the house has a bone-chilling history that's made it one of the most notorious murder houses in our country's history — and you can visit it! But before you purchase your tickets (more on the later), you'll want to read up on the horrifying true story of what happened to the Moore and Stillinger families inside the house. The events left two adults and six children dead, and if the hair on the back of your neck isn't already standing up, it will be.
The Villisca Ax Murder House Story
In the rural small town of Villisca, IA, in 1912, the Moore family lived in this small white frame house . Mr. and Mrs. Moore had four children: Herman, 11, Katherine, 9, Boyd, 7, and Paul, 5. One Sunday evening after church, sisters Lena and Ina Stillinger (ages 12 and 8) were invited back to the Moore household for supper and an overnight with the children, which they gladly accepted. When a neighbor didn't see any activity on the Moore property the following morning, she became worried and rang for the brother of Mr. Moore. After multiple attempts of calling into the house for someone to open or unlock the front door, he entered using a personal house key. What he saw next kick-started one of the world's most scandalous unsolved murder cases .
Inside, the bodies of the Stillinger sisters were found dead in a downstairs bedroom and the bodies of the Moore family were found dead in the bedrooms upstairs. All houseguests were bludgeoned to death on the night of June 10, 1912. What has scholars, historians, and investigators stumped is how the murder scene was left.
Lamps were found off at the end of each bed that contained a dead body; the victims' faces were covered with clothes after they were murdered; a bloody axe (presumably the murder weapon) was located in the room where the Stillinger girls were sleeping, and all rooms had gauge blood marks that mimicked the swing of an axe; there was a pan of bloody water in the kitchen along with a plate of uneaten food (Ummm, WTF?!); and all doors were locked. Oh, and did we mention that the axe belonged to Mr. Moore, which leads people to believe that the murderer arrived at the house unarmed?
Although there were a plethora of suspects, to this day, now 108 years later, there still isn't a convicted murderer and the case remains unsolved. Shortly after the murders, rumors began to spin out of control in the small town and newspapers picked up any and every name that was mentioned but that didn't produce a verified killer.
How You Can Tour the House
If you're just as curious and spooked about this unsolved murder mystery house as we are, you can visit the Villisca Ax Murder House and see it for yourself. Day tours are available Tuesday to Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m., and tickets are $10 per person and $5 for seniors (you just have to be 12 years or older to enter). Reservations aren't necessary, but masks or face coverings are mandatory right now, and groups are limited to six with a 15-minute time limit inside the house.
And for the most spine-tingling type of visit, you and a group of up to six guests can book an overnight tour for $428. After a tour of the house and grounds, keys are turned over to the guests and you have the house to yourself from 4 p.m. to 9:30 a.m. the next morning. Those staying overnight are advised to bring coats, sleeping bags, and pillows. Photographs, videos, and audio recording are highly encouraged!
You can book an overnight tour by visiting the Villisca Ax Murder House website , where you will also find more information regarding COVID-19 limitations and safety precautions. In the meantime, sneak a peek at some of the rooms inside the Villisca Ax Murder House ahead.

Villisca Ax Murder house
One of america’s most haunted houses.
The Villisca Ax Murders of June 1912 remain an enduring and unsettling enigma in American criminal history. In this quaint small Iowa town on a pleasant summer’s night, eight unsuspecting victims - including six children - were bludgeoned to death as they slept following a church service. Despite a nationwide manhunt, multiple suspects and two trials, the murder remains unsolved.
Take a Step Back in Time
In the 1990s, the home was painstakingly restored by historians Martha and Gavin Linn at great expense and effort to appears exactly like the night of the crime, right down to the lack of electricity or running water. Due to their dedication, the Josiah B. Moore House is now on the National Registry of Historic Places.
Experience It Yourself
In the last 20+ years, visitors reported all manner of unexplainable phenomena. What lurks in this otherwise picturesque farmhouse? Spirits of the victims? The dark presence of the murderer himself? Or could it be just the residue of the horrific crime that played out within its walls?

“The "Murder House" from "American Horror Story"”
Alfred Rosenheim was a German-American architect who built the mansion that's used in American Horror Story, and is now known as the "Murder House." It was also used in American Horror Story: Hotel, when Lady Gaga's Countess character used it to book an appointment with the deranged doctor who was practicing out of the basement. Back to reality...Rosenheim built the house in 1902 and lived in it with his family shortly thereafter. The Alfred Rosenheim Mansion was situated near an area called "Billionaire Row", close to California's wealthiest families. Rosenheim himself was notable not just for architectural design, but he also designed nine roller-coasters. The house is now available as a vacation rental through airbnb.com. For just $1,450 a night, you and 16 of your friends can rent out the entire house for a night that you won't ever forget. It actually comes out to just $90 a person! However, the haunted house that inspired the first season of American Horror Story was based on the Bailey House in Hartford, Connecticut. The house boasts numerous design gems, such as a Tiffany stained glass panels, and a bowed and turreted stair hall. The Rosenheims lived in the house for eleven years and sold it to California's wealthiest man, a "colorful mining magnate" named A.J. McQuatters (who was also "the first gay president of the Alvarado Mining and Milling Company"). Then, in the early 1930s actor Edward Everett Horton lived in the mansion. After him the Catholic Order of Nuns, the Sisters of Social Service used the house as a convent, and even added a chapel to the grounds. The chapel was used as the "Attic" in American Horror Story. The home was used in a series of films and television shows, such asSpiderman, Seabiscuit, The X-Files, The Twilight Zone, Six Feet Under, Bones, Dexter, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer (it was the frat house in the episode "Fear, Itself", where Buffy and the gang got locked in on Halloween). In 1994 an earthquake damaged the house and the nuns put it on the market for a cool $3 million. The house was declared an Historic and Cultural Landmark in 1999. Today, people drive by the home, which was made iconic in American Horror Story. It's a great place for a photo-op for die-hard fans of the show. -Roadtrippers House Where Filming For Season 1 Of American Horror Story Took Place. The house is actually a super popular filming location, beginning way back with Charlie Chaplin’s silent movies and then the inevitable talkies. ‘American Horror Story’ Murder House is virtually opening its doors for Halloween
If you’re looking for a wild, spooky, and COVID-safe way to celebrate Halloween, look no more. The infamous Murder House from the first season of the horror anthology television series “ American Horror Story ” is opening its doors for the first time, and you’re invited.
The homeowners of the notorious Los Angeles landmark, Dr. Ernst von Schwarz and his wife Angela Oakenfold, have announced a three-day, 24-hour paranormal live stream event will begin at dusk on Oct. 29, 2020, and end at sunset on Nov. 1, 2020. Fifteen cameras will be set up throughout the 10,000-square foot home that will stream live throughout the Halloween weekend.
In addition to the Murder House livestream, viewers will also be able to see live events every evening from 7 p.m. as investigators, speakers, and experts seek out the paranormal and attempt to make contact with the house’s 100-year-old ghostly residents.
The Murder House live stream programming will include:
- The first-ever paranormal investigation by Exorcist Bishop James Long, who has appeared on “Ghost Adventures,” “The Possessed,” “Gates Of Hell,” “Exorcism Live!,” and “Portals To Hell.”
- The house’s first-ever séance led by famous psychic and white witch Patti Negri from “Ghost Adventures.”
- Michelle Belanger, a vampire expert and acclaimed author who has been seen on “Paranormal State,” “Portals To Hell,” and “The Real Vampire Files,” will delve into the haunting world of the occult.
- Prolific historian and Halloween expert Lisa Morton will lead an exploration of the history and traditions of Halloween.
- Tarot expert Sasha Graham will explain the world of tarot (one lucky ticket holder will get a virtual reading live on air)
- Energy healer Satish Dholakia will advise on how to protect yourself from negative energies and unwanted evil entities.
- Psychiatrist Dr. Waguih Ishak will discuss the addictive nature of horror and the pathology of fear.
- Homeowner, cardiologist, and professor Dr. Ernst von Schwarz will delve into the history of medieval torture techniques.
While the livestream is open to all via the ticketed event, the Murder House will literally open its doors to six fortunate (or unfortunate) ticket holders. On each of the three nights of the event, two Murder House fans who buy tickets in the first week will find themselves in the house’s terrifying basement, all while being live-streamed to the world (and while a doctor monitors their vital signs and psychological condition).
Plus, a few lucky fans who tag the Murder House on social media will be chosen to be guests during the house’s first-ever seance or join a small group of ghost hunters during the first-ever paranormal investigation.
Tickets for the pay-per-view event are $25, which includes three days of 24-hour virtual access to the house and all events. Click here to purchase tickets.

Go beneath the streets on this tour of the spectacular, mind-bending Moscow Metro! Be awed by architecture and spot the Propaganda , then hear soviet stories from a local in the know. Finish it all up above ground, looking up to Stalins skyscrapers, and get the inside scoop on whats gone on behind those walls.
Know More about this tour
We begin our Moscow tour beneath the city, exploring the underground palace of the Moscow Metro. From the Square of Revolution station, famous for its huge statues of soviet people (an armed soldier, a farmer with a rooster, a warrior, and more), we’ll move onto some of the most significant stations, where impressive mosaics, columns, and chandeliers will boggle your eyes! Moreover, these stations reveal a big part of soviet reality — the walls depict plenty of Propaganda , with party leaders looking down from images on the walls. Your local guide will share personal stories of his/her family from USSR times, giving you insight into Russia’s complicated past and present. Then we’re coming back up to street level, where we’ll take a break and refuel with some Russian fast food: traditional pancakes, called bliny. And then, stomachs satiated, we are ready to move forward! We’ll take the eco-friendly electric trolleybus, with a route along the Moscow Garden Ring. Used mainly by Russian babushkas(grannies) during the day, the trolleybus hits peak hours in the mornings and evenings, when many locals use it going to and from their days. Our first stop will be the Aviator’s House, one of Stalin’s Seven Sisters, followed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs — and you’ll hear the legends of what has gone on inside the walls. Throughout your Moscow tour, you’ll learn curious facts from soviet history while seeing how Russia exists now, 25 years after the USSR.

Moscow Metro
The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.
What is the kremlin in russia?
The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.
And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.
During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.
There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Maggie Rogers Announces Arena Tour, Sequel to In-Person Ticketing Program to Skirt Scalpers
By Waiss Aramesh
Waiss Aramesh
Following the success of Maggie Rogers ’ in-person ticketing program for her tour last year, she’s going even bigger in 2024. Ahead of her new album Don’t Forget Me dropping on Friday, the singer announced her first arena run in the United States, kicking off in October after ‘ The Don’t Forget Me Tour, Part I ’ in early summer.
Friday kicks off a week-long celebration that Rogers is dubbing ‘Box Office Week’ that will include pop-up events, special shows at intimate venues in New York, Philadelphia, Boston, and Chicago, and chances to snag tickets to the arena tour at box offices across America.
Rogers’ arena run this fall includes a date at Madison Square Garden on October 19, a little over five years after the singer sold out two nights at Radio City Music Hall. Having gone to New York University and lived in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, Rogers is no stranger to venues across the city, from popping out at Barclays Center with Zach Bryan and Bruce Springsteen to her affinity for some of the city’s cozier settings.

Syracuse Stage unveils 2024-25 season: Murder, a princess, and... LeBron James?
T he Syracuse Stage has announced its lineup for the 2024-2025 season, featuring murder, a classic Broadway musical, a tale set in Upstate New York, and a drama inspired by NBA legend LeBron James.
The fun kicks off this fall with “ Dial M for Murder ,” directed by Syracuse Stage artistic director Robert Hupp and adapted by Jeffrey Hatcher. Originally written by Frederick Knott and made famous by Alfred Hitchock’s 1954 film, the suspenseful story centers on a former athlete who arranges the murder of their adulterous wife.
“This memorable movie thriller adapts beautifully to the stage,” said Hupp. “Audiences have really enjoyed our forays into this genre of storytelling, and I’m thrilled to get the new season underway with a taut, edge-of-your-seat whodunit.”
“Dial M for Murder” runs from Oct. 16-Nov. 3, followed by “ Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella ” (Nov. 22-Jan. 5), a musical about a princess with glass slippers under returning director Melissa Rain Anderson (”A Christmas Carol,” “Disney’s The Little Mermaid”). The fairytale performance will run through the holidays and feature additional songs from the 1997 TV movie that starred Brandy and Whitney Houston, according to a press release.
“ Primary Trust ,” set in the fictional town of Cranberry, New York (”just 40 miles east of Rochester”), will run from Jan. 22-Feb. 9, 2025, under associate artistic director Melissa Crespo (”Once,” “What the Constitution Means to Me”). The “delicate drama” follows one man’s journey to put his past (and his love of two-for-one Mai Tais) behind him.
The rest of the schedule includes “ King James ” (Feb. 26-March 16, 2025), a story of male friendship told through two die-hard Cleveland Cavaliers fans living in the shadow of superstar LeBron James’ career; Jane Austen’s “ Sense and Sensibility ” (April 23–May 11, 2025) and the baseball drama “ The National Pastime ” (June 11–29, 2025).
Syracuse Stage will also present the Julie Lutz Cold Read Festival of New American Plays; a one-man show about a not-yet-famous James Baldwin (“Citizen James, or the Young Man Without a Country,” from resident playwright Kyle Bass); Children’s Tour performances in elementary schools (”Pandora’s Suitcase”); Theatre for the Very Young’s “House for Mouse” (for children five and under); and the return of Sensory Friendly/Relaxed performances for all six subscription shows.
The theater’s 51st season, including the Cold Read Festival and a full schedule of educational, family and community related programming, will run from Aug. 2, 2024, to June 29, 2025. Subscription packages are on sale now at syracusestage.org or at the Syracuse Stage Box Office, 315-443-3275.
“We strive to create singular theatrical experiences that delight and entertain Central New York audiences,” Hupp said. “Our 51st season illustrates the breadth and scope of all that theatre aspires to be: From world premieres and musical classics to the familiar and the adventurous, we create our productions right here at our home on Genesee and Irving.”

Taylor Swift fans can still snap up Eras Tour resale tickets from Ticketmaster, Viagogo, VividSeats and more
Taylor Swift fans still have a chance to buy tickets to the star's various stadium shows in the UK this year from various resale sites.
- 11:46, 12 APR 2024
The countdown is well and truly underway for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, which arrives in the UK in June. The tour will call in London, Edinburgh, Liverpool and Cardiff.
When tickets went on sale last year, demand was through the roof with pre-sale and general tickets selling out within 15 minutes. Despite going on to add more stadium dates to her list of shows, those thousands of tickets were snapped up extremely quickly as well.
However, this doesn't mean all hope is lost - in fact, there are a couple of ways Swifties can still get their hands on Eras Tour tickets. There are multiple sites where you can snap up resale tickets - and there's even a way to book tickets with a 'clear view' of the stage. Here's what you need to know.
Where to buy Taylor Swift resale tickets
A number of online retailers are offering fans to chance to snap up resale tickets, but it is important to remember that prices are set by the sellers - which means some fans could be paying much more than expected.
Some sites, including Viagogo and Vivid Seats, are not "official" retailers. However, these sits do have strict terms and conditions in place to protect buyers and sellers. These websites specialise in selling tickets that fans no longer want.
Here are the sites you'll need to know:
- Viagogo - buy Taylor Swift resale tickets here
- VividSeats - buy Taylor Swift resale tickets here
- SeatGeek - buy Taylor Swift resale tickets here
There are also resale tickets available directly from Ticketmaster . You can find tickets here.
With people often concerned about using resale tickets, a Viagogo spokesperson told the Express: "The European leg of Taylor Swift’s Eras tour has been long anticipated. We’ve not seen anything like this since The Beatles and with tickets having only just gone on sale, demand is at its peak right now.
"Viagogo is a regulated marketplace where fans have the freedom to buy and sell tickets to their favourite live events, safely and securely, backed by a guarantee. Sellers on our marketplace may list tickets at high values when demand is high, but prices can change and tend to reduce over time.
"We recommend Swifties wait for demand to settle and check regularly for a listing that meets their budget. Tickets for Taylor Swift’s UK dates have already sold for as low as 172 GBP on our platform. Also, tickets listed at eye-catchingly high prices rely, if ever, sell."
How to get Taylor Swift tickets for low prices with 'clear view' of stage
According to the Mirror, there's a simple way to get your hands on Taylor Swift tickets without breaking the bank - and with a good view too. If you're willing to travel a bit further, you can snag tickets to see Taylor perform in Nanterre, just outside Paris, from around £430(at the time of writing) through Viagogo .
The Karma singer is playing at Paris La Defense Arena in Nanterre from May 9-12, which means you'd get to see the show before fans attending the UK gigs. There are still tickets up for grabs in the general admission standing section, as well as seating with an unobstructed view of the stage.
Of course, there are travel costs and hotel stays to consider by opting to see the singer outside of the UK, so it's worth giving it some thought as the whether its the right idea for you.
Warning to fans over 'fraudulent' ticket sellers
Swifties have been urged to remain vigilant after a number of fans were conned by 'fraudulent' ticket sellers. Fans should carefully check the ticket details to ensure their authenticity - including checking for accurate event information, including the date, time, and venue.
The police also recommend paying close attention to the seating section or assigned seats. Although not official retailers, Vivid Seats and Viagogo have a range of terms and conditions as well as safety protocols in place to protect fans from being scammed.

Hatsune Miku is playing Coachella, but she’s not human. Why brands are working with digital avatars

On Friday morning, Hatsune Miku performs songs on her biggest stage yet — Coachella.
The turquoise-haired Japanese icon has been touring North America, singing to thousands of fans in large concert venues. She’s inked branding deals over the years with companies including Google . And on Friday, she’s expected to thrill her followers at one of the world’s biggest music festivals — on the same day as Lana Del Rey and the Deftones.
But Miku is not human. She’s a totally digital creation, like an online avatar or mascot.
Her music — mostly synthesizer-heavy dance pop — is created from software developed by the Sapporo, Japan-based technology company Crypton Future Media.
The technology lets people, including fans, type in lyrics and punch in a melody. The program generates a singing voice for the song. Crypton then licenses the songs from the fans for her to sing at concerts. Miku herself is an illustrated character, resembling a 16-year-old girl from an anime or manga. To “perform” onstage, Miku’s image is displayed on a giant screen as a video behind a live band.
Unlike the “hologram” performances of deceased celebrity artists (think Tupac and Roy Orbison) that took the music industry by storm a few years ago, virtual artists aren’t simply re-creations — they’re avatars performing original music.
Coachella 2024: Everything you need to know about the festival
Your guide to Coachella 2024, from who’s playing, how to get tickets and what to eat at the festival to the party scene and how to watch at home on YouTube.

As it would be for a local indie rock artist, landing a spot at Coachella is a significant milestone for Miku. And her human creators. One of the people from Crypton who will be there at Miku’s performance at the festival’s Mojave tent is Riki Tsuji, a member of the company’s global business team.
“I’ve never been to Coachella, so I have no idea what kind of people are going there, what the crowds are gonna be like,” said Tsuji, who is traveling with Miku on tour. “But we’ll be putting together a show that hopefully they won’t forget.”
Hatsune Miku is part of an expanding group of digital, non-human performers that are attracting the attention of brands and music fans.
They’ve generated fans from younger generations of audiences that brands are eager to attract and understand — the kinds of kids who spend two to three hours a day on average on Fortnite and Roblox and are thus comfortable interacting with digital characters and online worlds.
One non-human digital influencer, named Miquela, boasts 2.6 million followers on Instagram and has done commercials for Calvin Klein and BMW . She’s represented by major Hollywood talent firm Creative Artists Agency, best known for working with A-listers including Brad Pitt and Viola Davis.
“There’s a new paradigm in terms of the digital world and the digital landscape,” said Phil Quist, a music and emerging technology agent at CAA . “When you think about what that looks like moving forward, those kids are going to be so used to being in those realms that a lot of their entertainment is going to come from that space as well.”
Company Town
AI companies are courting Hollywood. Do they come in peace?
Hollywood talent agencies and producers have met with AI companies, including ChatGPT maker OpenAI, to learn about how their technologies could be used in entertainment.
March 29, 2024
How much money a nonhuman virtual artist can earn varies widely., Gigs, ranging from social media posts to live performances, can generate up to nearly seven figures, Quist said.
“It ranges, but it’s very commensurate in terms of the following and engagement,” Quist said. “I think it can be comparable to ‘traditional talent’ in terms of what those deals look like.”
In addition to her Coachella appearance, Miku is putting on a North American tour, which includes 21 concerts in 17 cities. Initially, Miku announced 17 performances , but the tour expanded because of demand, Tsuji said.
Coachella was the gold standard of music festivals. Has it lost its shine?
Tickets are still available for Coachella’s second weekend ahead of its start on Friday. Here’s why the once-coveted ticket isn’t quite so hot anymore.
April 11, 2024
Miku began as a singing voice synthesizer (a.k.a. a “vocaloid”) in 2007. Her voice has been used in more than 100,000 songs.
“She’s very much a vessel for people to kind of express themselves and come together as a community,” Tsuji said. “It’s not just an artist-listener relationship. Each listener could also be an artist in this community.”
But the growth of nonhuman influencers comes at a time when actual performers are worried about how digitization and automation through artificial intelligence could impact future work. The cost of creating a digital avatar could become cheaper as technology evolves. Human influencers could find themselves competing for the same brand deals as nonhuman ones.
The fandom surrounding digital artists can rival that of human musicians. During Austin’s South by Southwest festival in 2022, fans uploaded videos from a concert by digital music artist angelbaby, singing along to the songs.
Angelbaby, a computer-generated humanoid rapping rabbit, is owned by Hume, an L.A.-based metaverse tech and music company, which is now represented by CAA. Angelbaby’s single, “life is good,” which was released in November, hit more than 4 million streams on Spotify.
“At the end of the day, if the music wasn’t good for those artists, people would potentially point fingers and laugh,” Quist said. Looking at angelbaby, “you could tell that people were so engaged and enamored by the performance.”
Millennials gave birth to ‘Generation Alpha.’ Are these kids already doomed?
Children born from 2010 to 2024 are part of “Generation Alpha,” the demographic successor to Gen Z. They are already being called “feral,” illiterate” and “doomed,” with bad parenting by millennials and the influence of technology blamed for bad behaviors.
March 22, 2024
The idea behind angelbaby came from Hume co-founders David Beiner and Jay Stolar. Stolar is a songwriter and producer who has worked with performers including Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato.
Hume created a backstory for angelbaby, a seven-foot rabbit from the year 3045, who is coping with losing the love of his life. Angelbaby has appeared on recordings with Grammy-winning producer Gino the Ghost and human music artists including boy band Prettymuch. The rabbit’s fans lean male and are in their 20s into their early 30s, Beiner said.
“I think on the emotional level if you do it right, people like to feel like they’re part of a fantasy,” Beiner said. “People have always liked to escape.”

Much of the work for virtual artists comes from partnerships with brands, who want to tap the performers’ younger, digitally savvy followers.
For example, Miquela — whose character is a socially conscious digital influencer from Downey — was featured in a commercial for BMW‘s iX2 electric vehicle. The bulk of Miquela’s fans are under 35.
“When you think about the BMW vehicle that came out that’s 100% electric,” said Ridhima Ahuja Kahn, vice president of business development and strategic initiatives at Dapper Labs, the company behind Miquela. “That was something that was really compelling to her because it tied in with a lot of her goals around sustainability.”
18 acts we can’t wait to see at Coachella 2024
With more than 100 artists on Coachella’s lineup, here’s who to catch at the festival this year, from Sacramento metal band Deftones to Argentine DJ-producer Bizarrap.
April 10, 2024
But like human influencers, there can also be some controversy surrounding digital ones.
Miquela’s ad with Calvin Klein showed her kissing model Bella Hadid, which some people online criticized as queer-baiting. Calvin Klein later said, “We sincerely regret any offense we caused.” Dapper Labs said it stands by the direction of the ad, which was to support all different types of backgrounds, genders and preferences.
“With virtual influencers, even they have drama too, just like any real-life influencer,” Ahuja Kahn said.
Many people worry that digital talent could take away human jobs. Last summer, writers and actors went on strike in part for more protections against the use of artificial intelligence.
“Anyone in the entertainment industry at large is very cognizant that a human resource of being on camera or being filmed or even writing a script or even editing a movie is being absorbed by what AI and technology can do,” said Elsa Ramo, a managing partner at Ramo Law PC.
Which entertainment jobs are most likely to be disrupted by AI? New study has answers
A new study estimates that 62,000 entertainment jobs in California will be disrupted by artificial intelligence in the next three years.
Jan. 30, 2024
But supporters of nonhuman talent say that the work can lead to more innovation, and, ultimately, jobs for the people who build the non-human influencers, although they acknowledge that AI will lead to more efficiency, which in turn will impact other jobs.
Ilian Gazut created Zlu, a blue alien model represented by management firm IMG Models who has done work for fashion designers like Karl Lagerfeld . Gazut said that Zlu’s movements are based on his movements.
“There is always a human behind it,” Gazut said. “So in my case, I didn’t have a job and thanks to him, I have a job.”
The world of digital, nonhuman influencers continue to evolve. Miquela, who made her first post in 2016, was originally conceived as being perpetually 19, but recently, the character made the jump to her 20s. And prospective schools are noticing.
“There are a few colleges who have reached out to us, so she’s looking at those and currently thinking about what the right fit for her would be and if college makes sense,” Ahuja Kahn said. “She’s been exploring what that path would look like for her.”
