These Are The Biggest Tours Coming To Canada in 2024

Major artists are making their way to canada in 2024, including taylor swift, diljit dosanjh, olivia rodrigo and many more. we've rounded up some of the biggest ones..

Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift

There are some big tours coming through Canada in 2024.

From new country festivals, to Punjabi superstars, to Billboard's Top Artist of 2023, there's no shortage of major shows coming to the country. Toronto's Rogers Centre and Vancouver's BC Place will host several stadium concerts this year, while festivals like Osheaga and Boots and Hearts are set to attract thousands of attendees outdoors. Toronto was recently named the most popular destination for world tours , and 2024 looks like it will live up to the reputation (even if Drake's tour with J. Cole is so far skipping his hometown).

Here are some of the biggest shows Canadians can look forward to this year:

Mitski at Massey Hall

Massey Hall was once a fitting venue for indie darling Mitski, but after a breakout 2023 amplified by the TikTok and Hot 100 success of "My Love Is Mine All Mine" this can now be considered a big underplay. Her three nights at the legendary Toronto concert hall are a big hot ticket in the city.

February 10-12 at Massey Hall in Toronto.

Noah Kahan: We'll All Be Here Forever World Tour

Noah Kahan's reinvention as a folk-rocker paid off in a big way in 2023, and now he's a major touring artist heading into the new year. Kahan broke through into the mainstream this year with his second record, Stick Season . Kahan has collaborated with a slew of top-tier artists, including Kacey Musgraves, Hozier and Post Malone. He's headlining Montreal's Osheaga with Green Day and SZA, which shows he's a top-tier artist in his own right, alongside his recent Grammy nod for Best New Artist. The Osheaga date comes after Kahan’s 2024 arena tour , which is not neglecting Canada. Unlike many big tours that stop in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver at most, this one also comes to Calgary, Edmonton, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, London, Ottawa and Quebec City.

March 26 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver.

March 28 at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary.

March 29 at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

March 30 at SaskTel Centre in Saskatoon.

April 2 at Canada Life Centre in Winnipeg.

April 6, April 14 and April 16 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto.

April 7 at Budweiser Garden in London.

April 9 at Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa.

April 10 at Videotron Centre in Quebec City.

April 13 at Bell Centre in Montreal.

August 2 at Osheaga Festival in Montreal.

Diljit Dosanjh: Diluminati Tour

Last year, Punjabi music superstar Diljit Dosanjh became the first musician to play an entirely Punjabi set at Coachella, and this year he's making history in Canada: on April 27, 2024, at Vancouver's BC Place, Dosanjh will play the largest ever Punjabi music show outside of India. The stadium performance indicates the rising popularity of Punjabi music , particularly in Canada, where Dosanjh's latest album Ghost peaked at No. 5 on the Canadian Albums chart last year.

April 27 at BC Place in Vancouver.

Coast City Country First Edition

This spring, Live Nation Canada is bringing a brand new stadium festival to Vancouver, titled Coast City Country. Canadian rockers Nickelback will headline alongside country stars Luke Bryan and Dierks Bentley. More than a music festival, Live Nation is hoping that Coast City Country will become a country takeover of Vancouver, with guests coming in from all over for the experience and wearing their cowboy hats around town all weekend. With Coast City, Live Nation is betting big on country music. The festival takes place at BC Place stadium on April 19 and 20.

April 19 and 20 at BC Place in Vancouver.

Gwen Stefani & Blake Shelton open Great Canadian Casino Resort

Toronto's splashy new casino will come with a 5,000 capacity theatre, and it's got a nice pair of opening night shows. TV cohosts/married couple Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton will open the new venue with concerts on consecutive nights. They're billed as separate shows, but there's plenty of duet possibility there. See if you can spot them at the tables in between.

May 3 for Gwen Stefani and May 4 for Blake Shelton at Great Canadian Casino Resort in Toronto

Tate McRae: Think Later Tour & Calgary Stampede

Canada's newest pop star Tate McRae, named a Billboard Canada Breakthrough Artist of 2023 , is taking her show on the road in 2024 for a global tour that will bring her from Ireland to Australia. The Think Later tour — named for her 2023 sophomore album — will stop in Toronto in July at the Budweiser Stage, and McRae will also head west that month to play the Cowboys Music Festival , which takes place during the Calgary Stampede. The show will be a Calgary homecoming for the L.A.-based artist — and after a whirlwind year including performances on Saturday Night Live and at the Billboard Music Awards, the singer could probably use some familiar sights.

July 5 at Cowboys Music Festival in Calgary.

The Rolling Stones: Hackney Diamonds Tour

With the release of their 24th album — and their first original album in nearly two decades — rock legends the Rolling Stones became the first act to have top 10 albums on the Billboard 200 in every decade since the '60s. Hackney Diamonds hit No. 3 on the albums chart and the Stones will be taking it out on a stadium tour this summer. The band have only announced 19 dates so far. Somewhat unusually, the only Canadian date is at Vancouver's BC Place. In the meantime, Hackney Diamonds is getting a deluxe version this month, which will include seven new live recordings — plenty to keep fans busy.

July 5 at BC Place in Vancouver .

Green Day: The Saviors Tour

Following up their fiery half-time performance at the Grey Cup last fall, the rock trio will be returning to Canada this summer for a performance at Toronto's Rogers Centre and as headliners at Montreal's Osheaga , Canada's largest music and arts festival. The band have a lot to celebrate on the Saviors Tour , from the release of their new album, The Saviors , to the 20th anniversary of their No. 1 album American Idiot , to the 30th anniversary of '90s classic Dookie . No word on whether the pyrotechnics will be out again for these gigs, but over thirty years on, the band certainly still knows how to put on a show.

August 1 at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

August 3 at Osheaga Festival in Montreal.

Blink-182: One More Time Tour

Mark Hoppus, Tom DeLonge and Travis Barker put out their first release as a trio in over a decade last fall, following guitarist and vocalist DeLonge's departure from the group between 2015 and 2022. Their reunion record, One More Time , hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200 , becoming their third album to do so, while singles "Edging" and "One More Time" topped the Rock & Alternative Airplay Chart . Fans are clearly happy that the iconic pop-punk group are playing together one more time — and Canadian fans will get the chance to see them live at the Rogers Centre this summer , with Pierce The Veil supporting on August 15.

August 15 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Taylor Swift: Eras Tour

Swifties were worried when Taylor Swift's initial Eras Tour dates didn't feature any Canadian stops, but the global popstar — and Billboard's Top Artist of 2023 — put their worries at ease with the announcement of 2024 shows in both Toronto and Vancouver, at the Rogers Centre and BC Place respectively. The behemoth Eras Tour features songs from each of Swift's studio albums and has already grossed over a billion dollars worldwide, without even taking into account the Eras Tour concert movie that hit theatres last fall. Canadian fans were dancing in the aisles at Eras Tour screenings in 2023, but in 2024 they'll get to sing along to the real deal.

November 14-16 and November 21-23 at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

December 6-8 at BC Place in Vancouver.

Celine Dion and Taylor Swift attend the 66th GRAMMY Awards at Crypto.com Arena on Feb. 4, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

Dion opened up to Vogue France about the Grammys, fashion & how she's taking life one day at a time.

Celine Dion is opening up about her surprise appearance at the Grammys earlier this year, which marked the singer’s first appearance since being diagnosed with the rare neurological disorder Stiff Persons Syndrome in late 2022.

In a video with Vogue France , in which Dion recounts memories she associates with some of her favorite fashion moments of her career (including singing “My Heart Will Go On” at the Academy Awards and performing at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards), she also recalls her experience at the Grammys in February.

“It was very nerve-racking, but at the same time, a big honor,” Dion told the outlet. “That magic, that excitement. To see the fans, to see the crowd, to see show business again.” She added: “It took a lot, a lot out of me. But my son, René Charles, RC, came and gave me his support.”

Dion also addressed one of the most-talked-about moments from the evening, when Dion presented Taylor Swift the Grammy for album of the year for Midnights . Swift drew criticism for seemingly ignoring Dion while accepting her Grammy onstage.

“To present the award, the album of the year, to Taylor Swift, it was an honor because she’s having the time of her life and I’m the one who’s presenting it to her. But it’s always very, very touching when you have a standing ovation,” Dion said.

Though Swift garnered backlash in the moment, photos from backstage seemed to tell a different story, as one image depicted Swift and Dion posing together and smiling, with Swift hugging Dion.

In Dion’s Vogue France cover story , the five-time Grammy winner noted that she was honored to be in the spotlight for Vogue France at age 55.

“I’m very proud that, at 55, I’ve been asked to reveal my beauty,” Dion said. “But what is beauty? Beauty is you, it’s me, it’s what’s inside, it’s our dreams, it’s today. Today, I’m a woman who is feeling strong and positive about the future. One day at a time.”

Dion previously had to postpone her tour dates for 2023 due to her diagnosis, and says her plans for returning to performing are vague at the moment.

“I’ve been saying to myself that I’m not going back, that I’m ready, that I’m not ready,” Dion said. “As things stand, I can’t stand here and say to you: ‘Yes, in four months.’ I don’t know. … My body will tell me. On the other hand, I don’t just want to wait. It’s morally hard to live from day to day. It’s hard, I’m working very hard, and tomorrow will be even harder. Tomorrow is another day, but there’s one thing that will never stop, and that’s the will. It’s the passion. It’s the dream. It’s the determination.”

Taylor Swift comes to Canada in fall 2024 - but these 10 anticipated concerts arrive on the calendar even sooner

The year in concerts for 2023? In a word: Expensive. According to Pollstar’s annual year-end business analysis , the average ticket price for the 100 top-grossing tours in North America increased 21.9 per cent to US$135.88 from US$111.49 in 2022.

Here’s another word: Unprecedented. Following 2022′s record-breaking numbers, grosses for the top North American tours hit US$6.63-billion, a whopping year-to-year jump of 39.5 per cent.

The skyrocketing numbers were driven, among other causes, by blockbuster tours led by stadium spectacles mounted by Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. The former’s 60 concerts grossed a record-setting more than US$1-billion, while the latter’s grossed US$580-million in 56 shows.

Swift, Time magazine’s person of the year, will pad her tour numbers in Canada in 2024 with six concerts at Toronto’s Rogers Centre in November and three at Vancouver’s BC Place in December.

Those shows are a long way off, though. The following recommended pop, classical and opera concerts take place mainly in the first half of 2024.

Allison Russell

“I used to dream, but now I write,” Allison Russell sings on Snakelife . “I wield my words like spindles bright.” About rebirth and shedding skin, the song is off her 2023 album The Returner , which earned the Montreal-born, Nashville-based roots music star four nominations for next year’s Grammy Awards. Themes of Black liberation and personal redemption thread the material of a self-taught singer-songwriter whose melodic messages are delivered with sparkled joy. 20-date cross-country tour begins Feb. 23 at Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver; ends March 22 at Lunenburg Opera House in Lunenburg, N.S.

Trans-Canada Highwaymen

The Canadian pop-rock supergroup boasts Sloan’s Chris Murphy, Barenaked Ladies’ Steven Page, the Pursuit of Happiness’s Moe Berg and Odds’ Craig Northey, born in Charlottetown, Toronto, Edmonton and Vancouver, respectively. If that doesn’t make them Trans-Canada Highwaymen, an album of classic Canadian pop covers from the 1960s and seventies – Explosive Hits Vol. 1 – and a 12-city tour of Ontario and the Prairies should clinch the deal. Starting March 6 at Casino Regina; ending May 10 at Ottawa’s Babs Asper Theatre

A patriot (eight years service in the U.S. Navy) and a populist (his 2022 live album is titled All My Homies Hate Ticketmaster ), Zach Bryan broke big with the release of 2022′s American Heartbreak and the hurtin’-music single Something in the Orange . Two studio records of husky-voiced heartland rockers, earnest balladry, red-dirt Americana and uncomplicated car-centric odes released since continue to endear the Oklahoman not just to country crowds but blue-jeaned people of all kinds. March 17-18 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto; Nov. 17-18 at Rogers Place in Edmonton; Nov. 20 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver

Nicki Minaj

Barbie movie, be a doll and relinquish your claim on the colour pink, would you? Hip-hop queen Nicki Minaj just released her fifth studio album, Pink Friday 2 . The sample-heavy, guest-starring crowd-pleaser and its lead single, Super Freaky Girl , arrived 13 years after the rapper’s debut album Pink Friday . So, a sequel. Your move, Barbie. April 17 at Bell Centre in Montreal; April 18 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto

Diljit Dosanjh

In 2022, the actor/musician known as the Super Singh of Punjab packed concert arenas in Vancouver, Calgary, Winnipeg and Toronto. This year he became the first artist to perform a fully Punjabi set at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. Capitalizing on his success in Canada – his album Ghost spent seven weeks this year on the Billboard Canadian Albums chart – Dosanjh tests his skill set in pop, trap and R&B at the stadium level for what is being billed as the largest-ever Punjabi music performance outside of India. April 27 at BC Place in Vancouver

Classical and opera

Toronto Symphony Orchestra: Saxophone Concerto

An outsider is set to appear with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. No, not Peter Oundjian – the TSO’s conductor emeritus is always a welcome sight on the podium. The unusual visitor is the saxophone, a relative stranger to symphonies. Making its Canadian premiere is John Adams’s jazzy 2013 Saxophone Concerto , with soloist Steven Banks. The program includes Rachmaninoff’s soaring, shattering Symphony No. 3 . Jan. 17 and 20 at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto; Jan. 21 at George Weston Recital Hall in Toronto

Winnipeg New Music Festival: Missy Mazzoli

“ The goal can’t be to make art to satisfy everyone’s demands,” American composer Missy Mazzoli recently told The Talks magazine, “because then you’re not really creating anything that is daring, or far reaching.” The quote is music to the ears of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra and its annual event of outside-the-box presentations. Five concerts include a program (Rites & Passages) that spotlights two Mazzoli orchestral works: Orpheus Undone and the five-movement Violin Concerto (Procession) , with soloist Karl Stobbe. Jan. 27 at Centennial Concert Hall in Winnipeg; Winnipeg New Music Festival runs Jan. 25-Feb. 2

Pacific Opera: Ainadamar

The title means Fountain of Tears in Arabic, and refers to the place in Granada where Spanish poet/playwright Federico Garcia Lorca was assassinated in 1936. Golijov’s death-haunted single-act opera made its premiere at the Tanglewood Music Center in Massachusetts in 2003. Feb. 21, 23, 25 and 27 at Royal Theatre in Victoria

Yannick Nézet-Séguin and the Philadelphia Orchestra

When he’s not conducting the Metropolitan Opera in New York or his hometown Orchestre Métropolitain in Montreal, Yannick Nézet-Séguin waves his baton over the acclaimed Philadelphia Orchestra, founded in 1900. The Grammy-winning maestro leads the group in a Canadian tour of Florence Price’s Symphony No. 4 and Rachmaninoff’s Symphony No. 2 . April 17 at Koerner Hall in Toronto; April 18 at Southam Hall in Ottawa; April 19 at La Maison Symphonique in Montreal

Canadian Opera Company: Aportia Chryptych – A Black Opera for Portia White

Following next year’s productions of The Cunning Little Vixen , Don Giovanni , Don Pasquale and the rarely presented Medea by Luigi Cherubini, the COC closes its season with a world premiere. Aportia Chryptych: A Black Opera for Portia White , by librettist HAUI and composer Sean Mayes, recollects the story of the first Black Canadian concert singer to achieve international fame. With spoken word, rap, folk songs, R&B and classic opera, the legendary mid-century contralto is celebrated. June 14-16 at Canadian Opera Company Theatre in Toronto

Yannick Nézet-Séguin Conductor

Price Symphony No. 4   Rachmaninoff Symphony No. 2

This concert continues Yannick and the Orchestra’s exploration of the music of Florence Price, whose music was lost to generations and has only recently come to be considered some of the greatest of 20th-century American music. Although she composed more than 400 works, most of it was never publicly performed; in a letter to famed conductor Serge Koussevitsky, Price wrote, “I have two handicaps—those of sex and race.” Price’s Fourth Symphony, written in 1945, was presumed lost until discovered among a nest of her papers in an abandoned house that had once been her summer home. In this, her final symphony, Price incorporates melodies from spirituals, including a beautifully orchestrated theme from “Wade in the Water,” and the third movement embraces a traditional Juba dance—a syncopated stamping, clapping movement to a rhythm that was a precursor to ragtime.

Rachmaninoff’s lushly textured, warm, and melodious Second Symphony was an enduring favorite that the composer conducted with The Philadelphia Orchestra in its U.S. premiere in 1909.

“The largest EDM event in Western Canada returns to Calgary for two epic days!  Living in the prairies of Canada is the pursuit of the fleeting. Winter dominates the calendar, while the most desired season of them all – summer – is heartbreakingly short by comparison. It becomes an obsessive pursuit for all, eager to grab what they can before the leaves change to herald the impending harvest and snowy landscape to come. This is the reason why Canadians love summer so desperately. CHASING SUMMER is a celebration of this passion.”

This means that we curate music from genres such as electronic dance music and hip hop, all the way to rock and country music, and many varying sounds in between. By building our event on the Elks Rodeo Grounds, we have access a lot of unique benefits that we cherish. City water and electricity, ease of access to emergency services and personnel, as well as permanent professional infrastructure such as: an auditorium, industrial kitchen, corrals, common areas, workstations and, most importantly, the on-going support of The Elks Association & the local community. This festival was created by veterans of the live music and festival community who felt many festivals are lacking the appropriate core principles and priorities necessary to deliver a fun and safe experience.”

The 25 Concert Tours You Can’t Afford to Miss This Summer

After a massive slump during COVID , the concert industry is again sh-boom, sh-booming! The gross for the top 100 North American tours in 2023 reached $6.63 billion, up 39.5 percent over 2022, with attendance nearly doubling, to 15,008 per show, according to Pollstar.

And this year is shaping up to be another box office blowout. Despite the national outrage over price spikes for eggs, airfare and gas , music lovers seem immune to ticket shock. Ticket prices climbed 22 percent last year, to an average of $135.88, compared to $111.49 in 2022. And the trend is pointing skyward.

Taylor Swift’s “Eras” tour and Beyonce’s “Renaissance World” tour ranked first and second last year, but boomer acts remain the tour circuit’s lucrative and reliable summer tentpole, delivering packed arenas and sheds year after year as fans flock to relish the oldies and rekindle the past.

Here are the acts to catch this sunny season.

Heart (April 20–May 24, Aug. 10–Nov. 22)

Sisters Ann Wilson, 73, and Nancy Wilson, 70, haven’t released an album since 2016’s Beautiful Broken , but they have decades of hits, including “Magic Man,” “Barracuda,” “These Dreams” and “Alone,” to draw from on their “Royal Flush” tour . Cheap Trick opens.

Kenny Chesney (April 20–Aug. 23)

After hitting arenas last year, country star Chesney, 56, has booked 18 stadiums for shows with openers including the Zac Brown Band, Megan Moroney and Uncle Kracker, his duet partner on chart-topper “When the Sun Goes Down.” All but one of the shows are on Saturdays.

Billy Joel (April 26–Nov. 9)

The Piano Man, 74, has scheduled only 13 dates , four of them at New York’s Madison Square Garden, so ticket stampedes are likely. Fans are curious to know if “Turn the Lights Back On,” Joel’s first single in 17 years, will be added to his hit-heavy repertoire.

The Rolling Stones (April 28–July 17)

Mick Jagger , 80, Keith Richards, 80, Ron Wood, 76, and company continue their global “Hackney Diamonds” tour , named after last year’s highly praised album , the group’s first batch of originals since 2005’s  A Bigger Bang . Expect  Diamonds  cuts and lots of hits.

Stevie Nicks (May 3–June 21)

Between Fleetwood Mac’s songbook and her own solo catalog, singer-songwriter Nicks, 75, has a huge well of material to draw from as she extends a tour that started in February. She’s been performing crowd favorites “Landslide,” “Dreams,” “Rhiannon” and “Edge of Seventeen” as well as Tom Petty hits in honor of her late friend.

George Strait (May 4–July 20, Dec. 7)

A touring juggernaut, honky-tonk country singer-songwriter Strait, 71, resumes the record-breaking stadium tour he kicked off in 2023. He’s joined by Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town. The King of Country serves up “his own Eras tour, leading a well-curated, decades-spanning set of songs,” according to  Billboard .

The rock belter’s “Summer Carnival” tour , which began last year, covers a wide range of material, from hits “So What,” “Get the Party Started” and “Who Knew” to the title track from her latest album,  Trustfall,  to such covers as Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love” and Janis Joplin’s signature tune “Me and Bobby McGee.”

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (Aug. 15–Sept. 15)

Many 2023 tour dates were postponed when the Boss called in sick with peptic ulcer disease and E Street members got COVID. Springsteen, 74, is back at work and promising a wider selection of songs than the fairly static set list played earlier in the tour .

Crowded House (Aug. 29–Sept. 28)

The Australian rock band, best known for “Don’t Dream It’s Over” and “Something So Strong,” will launch its “Gravity Stairs” tour to support its eighth studio album, Gravity Stairs , out May 31. ‘Melas To Mainstream: Punjabi music’s boom in Canada’: new OMNI Television special

By Sumeet Dhami, OMNI News

Posted April 25, 2024 2:38 pm.

Last Updated April 25, 2024 3:18 pm.

History is set to be made for Punjabi music in Canada this week.

Global superstar Diljit Dosanjh is leading the charge, kicking off his Canada-wide tour this Saturday, with a monumental performance at BC Place. Dosanjh’s show is set to draw over 50,000 fans, making it the biggest Punjabi concert outside of India.

Following closely behind Dosanjh, is Canada’s very own Karan Aujla. As the first Punjabi Juno-Award winner, he is poised to sell out Rogers Centre and BC Place this summer. As these two powerhouses take centre stage, the meteoric rise of Punjabi music in the mainstream is growing at an unprecedented pace.

However, this cultural shift didn’t just happen overnight. Generations of artists have inspired the way for this new wave of Punjabi music, mixed with pop, hip-hop, and R&B.

OMNI Television’s special program, “Melas to Mainstream: Punjabi Music’s Boom in Canada,” takes a deeper dive into how this genre is rooted in tradition and captivates the masses.

Artists like Jazzy B, a Canadian-Punjabi singer-songwriter of over 30 years, is an example of an artist who went from performing in front of a couple hundred fans at local melas to thousands at concert venues and major league sports half-time shows.

“Punjabi music’s got that beat! It doesn’t matter if you understand what the person is singing,” Jazzy B told OMNI News.

Making waves across North America, last summer Diljit Dosanjh became the first artist to perform in Punjabi at the Coachella Music Festival, and this year, AP Dhillon, achieved the same. This substantial growth of Punjabi music owes much to Canadian artists like Dosanjh, Aujla, and AP Dhillon, boasting over 2 billion streams worldwide.

Major labels are also recognizing this growth. Last year, Warner Music Canada launched 91 North Records, a new label dedicated to investing in South Asian artists in Toronto.

Canadian-Punjabi music producer Gminxr has been at the forefront of this new wave of Punjabi music.

“When the world really hears it and accepts it, we’re going to tap into the international market. I think the whole world is going to look at Punjabi music differently,” Gminxr said.

From only being able to enjoy Punjabi music within our homes or at local, intimate events, to now seeing Punjabi artists top international streaming charts and selling out Canada’s largest stadiums – Punjabi music has successfully cemented its space in the mainstream.

OMNI Television’s special premieres today at 6:30 p.m. in Punjabi and 11 p.m. in English on OMNI2.

A Gen Xer who got $250,000 in student loans forgiven said he can now finally start saving for retirement — and consider his dream of studying in India

  • Joel Lambdin, 49, received $250,000 in student-loan forgiveness in January.
  • It's a result of the Education Department's one-time account adjustments.
  • Lambdin said the relief would allow him to save for retirement and consider long-term dreams.

Insider Today

Joel Lambdin finished graduate school in 1998 — but as a professional musician, he was hardly making enough money to pay off his student loans and other bills.

So Lambdin, now 49, said his only option to make ends meet was to put his student loans in forbearance — in which he was not making payments but interest was still accumulating .

"It was just so that I could subsist, so that I could survive," Lambdin told Business Insider. "With the hope that at some point, I would be making enough money that I would be able to take them out of forbearance and start paying them down."

But he grew to realize that the only way he could make a significant dent in his student loans was by switching careers. He didn't want to do that because he loved working in music, so he decided to keep his larger student loan in forbearance and begin paying off his smaller loan with a lower monthly payment.

He continued making those payments until the pandemic pause on student-loan payments , at which point he and his wife started making a plan of action to tackle the larger debt once the pause ended. That led them to discover the Education Department's initiative allowing some borrowers a one-time account adjustment . It lets the department evaluate borrowers' accounts and update payment progress toward forgiveness on income-driven repayment plans and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, including any payments made during a forbearance period.

That account adjustment led to a letter Lambdin received on January 31, reviewed by BI, from his student-loan servicer Aidvantage. It said: "Congratulations! The Biden-Harris Administration has forgiven your federal student loan(s) listed below with Aidvantage in full."

For Lambdin, that letter meant his $249,255 outstanding student-loan balance was effectively wiped out.

"It had started to feel like my fate was being decided for me by the cold hand of finance," Lambdin said, "and that was a weight that I didn't realize was there until it wasn't there."

He added: "The feeling was much more like putting down a backpack that was really full of books that you got used to. And then you put it down, and you're like, 'Oh, man, that feels so much better.' It's more like that, rather than sort of a jump-for-joy kind of situation."

While Lambdin is still working to determine what exactly the relief will mean for him and his wife, he said, discussing retirement is "a much more present conversation now" because contributing to savings is viable after the relief. He can also begin to look into buying a home.

Related stories

The Education Department continues to cancel student debt through its one-time account adjustments, a process it plans to complete this summer. Most recently, the department wiped out $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers , some of whom benefited from the adjustments.

Beyond financial goals, Lambdin said the relief was also allowing him the freedom to pursue some of his long-term dreams, including taking a sabbatical to study with his meditation teacher in India.

"It's something that I wouldn't have been able to even consider doing if we had to pay off student loans, but without them, it's something that I can really seriously consider doing," he said. "And so those are the kinds of things that I think get really lost in the monetary side of the conversation about debt relief."

'I've been really lucky'

While Lambdin said he felt as though he earned the relief given his decades of payments, he recognized that it's not that easy for many other borrowers.

For example, as BI has previously reported , some borrowers who might qualify for relief through different repayment programs may not have gotten it yet because of paperwork backlogs and administrative errors. On top of that, funding for federal student-loan servicers is strained — meaning many borrowers face hourslong hold times and cannot get clear answers from customer service regarding their payment progress.

"There are some real horror stories out there, and I've been really lucky in that I haven't experienced the kinds of shenanigans that other people have experienced," Lambdin said. "So I actually feel very lucky that things have transpired the way they have."

Some of those horror stories include inaccurate payment projections and delayed billing statements . When it comes to student-loan forgiveness, some borrowers told BI that their servicer made a mistake with the forgiveness , reinstating their payments months later.

The Education Department has said it's aware of the challenges borrowers face and has established an accountability framework to punish servicers when they fail to fulfill their contractual obligations.

The department is also in the process of crafting its new plan for student-loan forgiveness — it recently released the draft text of the rules , which included relief for borrowers with unpaid interest and those who have been in repayment for at least 20 years.

As for Lambdin, he's still figuring out how to approach life without student debt hanging over his head. But now he can consider various options, and he can thank the loan forgiveness for that freedom.

"There's a certain amount of waiting for the other shoe to drop because it's not that I don't trust that it's happening but just that the debt has been with me for so long, and then it's not there," Lambdin said. "And it's something that I think really takes some getting used to."
