Madman's Journey

Nandi Hills Travel Guide: Best 1-Day Trip from Bangalore!

nandi hills

Nandi Hills Travel Guide – We had planned this trip for quite some time! All of us being minimalists, we’d calculated every penny for the trip. Each bus/cab ride, fuel prices on our chartered car, even the coffee prices! After all, Bangalore is expensive .

Well, not everything by our trip outlines. But that’s just how traveling is. What fun is it when a journey goes with perfection anyway? But with my Nandi Hills experience , here’s everything to know about visiting Nandi Hills without hustle – thus Nandi Hills travel guide .

Nandi Hills is one of the top things to do in Bangalore. This post has everything you need to know about visiting Nandi Hills – things to do in Nandi Hills, timings, itinerary, trusted booking resources, and extra expenditures.

This Nandi hills travel guide is lengthy, help yourself with this table of content below.

Table of Contents

Nandi Hills Travel Guide – Tourist timings and rates

Let’s begin with all the things a visitor should know before traveling – the timings, entry fee, and what to expect during the pandemic.

  • Nandi Hills Timings – The Nandi Hills is open from 6:00 am to 10:00 pm on all days of the year.

nandi hills pictures

Is Nandi Hills open during the lockdown?

Nandi Hills travel guide – Yes, Nandi Hills is open for visitors during the COVID-19 pandemic as of July 4th, 2021. It shouldn’t be a problem to visit the hills as long as you wear your masks and avoid crowds.

Yet it’s best to stay updated on it. Not long ago, people were gestured to leave Nandi Hills as it started to crowd up on a weekend.

Take your precautions and it’s best to visit on non-peak days for safety.

Best time to visit Nandi Hills

The best time to visit Nandi Hills is early morning . To experience the beautiful sunrise, be there by 6:30 am. The gates to Nandi Hills open at 6. But be an hour earlier to avoid long waiting lines.

The hills being a very popular spot, it’s hard to find a spot for your vehicle to park (or even go up). When we visited, the gates were still shut.

We’d made it there by 5 am and we were in front of the queue. But even being there early at 5, there were already a dozen bikes and cars ahead of us before the gate. While we waited for an hour till 6, the queue of vehicles kept piling up behind us.

  • How much time does it take to visit Nandi Hills?  It takes 2-3 hours to experience the Nandi Hills sunrise at the top, walk around the gardens, and explore some historic places like the Tipu Summer Palace.

nandi hills road trip

Nandi Hills Entry Fee

The entry fee for Nandi Hills cost Rs 175 when we visited including the car parking.

The prices on most sites haven’t been updated, but the prices have hiked a lot since GST. The cost for entry has almost doubled in 3 years. Here are the updated prices:

  • 2 wheelers  – It costs Rs 30 for 2-wheeler parking.
  • 4 wheelers – Car park by the bus stand for 4 members costs Rs 125 and Rs 150 for 5 members in a car. It costs Rs 175 for car parking on the Nandi Hills hilltop.
  • Autorickshaws – It costs Rs 70 to park by the bus stand and Rs 80 on the hilltop.

Source: AsiaNet News

Even with the hike in prices, the number of tourists visiting Nandi hills every morning keep increasing, hence making parking space harder to get.

Accommodation at Nandi Hilltop

The KSTDC (Karnataka State Tourism Department) manages the guest houses at Nandi Hilltop called the Hotel Mayura Pine Top. It’s the perfect spot to stay for those visiting Nandi Hills. For a weekend getaway, I’d recommend staying here considering its decent reviews on Booking.com.

Moreover, the prices are reasonable ranging from Rs. 2000 – 3500 per night considering the popular location and facilities. Check for pricing for your dates on Booking.com below:

However, this is the only available as the tourism department manages the accommodation at the top. But with so many people visiting, there are many other stays available at the foothills of Nandi. Though at the foothills, they offer various facilities like camping, fires, cycling, and trekking. One such popular eco-resort here is the Discovery Village Nandi Hills.

Nandi Hills Travel guide: Things to Carry

This Nandi hills travel guide isn’t complete without mentioning stuff to pack! There isn’t much to bring along, but the visits in the morning get cold. Here are some things that’ll come in handy.

Things to Wear

Since visiting Nandi Hills is lesser than a one-day trip, there aren’t many essentials to carry. But the first thing I’d recommend bringing along is a jacket (or anything to keep you warm).

Here are things to wear when visiting Nandi Hills in the morning:

  • Beanie cap (or something to cover your head)
  • Sports shoes

On the safer side, bring a waterproof jacket – the chilly atmosphere forms water droplets on your clothes. When it’s cold the place gets way too chilly then. Within an hour on the hills and all our heads were wet.

Also, it’s better to wear sports shoes or any footwear with a grip. Apart from the view bridge being slippery at times, the hills that you’ll walk on around the hills are smooth to stride upon.

Things to Pack for Nandi Hills

Absolutely nothing! The only things you’ll need on this trip are:

  • A water bottle
  • And a camera.

A water bottle is sufficient for an early morning visit to Nandi Hills. Some blogs included items such as sunscreen. Unless you’re staying up there till late morning, it isn’t necessary.

We didn’t have a professional camera with us. But bring one along, the sunrise view is breathtaking in the chilly mornings. The shadows of the trees make it cooler (or spooky!).

Visiting Nandi Hills from Bangalore

Nandi hills are 50-60 km from Bangalore in the district of Chikkaballapur. It’s only 43 km from Yelahanka, the edge of Bangalore – where I live – and only 38 km from Kempegowda airport. It takes around 1 to 1.5 hours to reach Nandi Hills by car

While the car is the best way to get to Nandi Hills, here are some ways to reach Nandi Hills.

Nandi Hills travel guide: How to go there?

Most people visit Nandi Hills from Bangalore. And the hills being popular, there are many ways to get to Nandi Hills:

  • Take a bus to Nandi Hills.  Get a bus from the majestic bus stand (KSRTC) directly to Nandi Hills. Or take a connecting bus from Chikkaballapur. Majestic is 60 km away and it shall take 2 hours to reach Nandi Hills.
  • Drive/Hire a cab. This is the best way and safest way to get to Nandi Hills. Use services like Klook , Zoomcar, or Ola rentals to rent a car for the round trip, it’s cheaper than hiring a cab.
  • Ride your bike! Most take bikes up to Nandi Hills. The ride up the hills is a sweet journey for bike riding enthusiasts. Some folks go for rental scooters like Vogo or Bounce to visit the hills. However, the rides can get dangerous during peak hours.

We booked a car on Zoomcar. You’ll need to search for a bit to get the best prices. It’s 20% off on Klook car booking to Nandi hills now. Check it out!

For cabs, you can also get them at the Kempegowda airport and reach the hills within an hour.

Taking a private vehicle is better than a bus as it’s impossible to visit early in the morning by bus. The first bus to Nandi hills leaves at 8:30 am.

nandi hills sunrise picture, beautiful hill sunrise view

Driving from Bangalore

Driving from Yelahanka, Bangalore wasn’t a problem. We were up early and on the highway NH44 a few hours after 12. Since we had time, we detoured, visiting the Kempegowda airport – thus spending more time and fuel than mentioned on this Nandi Hills travel guide.

Anyway, driving to Nandi Hills isn’t a problem, but driving up the hills is challenging with the traffic around.

Lucky for us, one of our friends was an experienced driver. For those into amateur driving, it’s best to hire a driver. Nandi hills isn’t a place you want to be messing around with when it comes to the roads. Though the narrow roads are wide for enough 2 vehicles, people drive crazy in the morning on the curvy uphill paths.

My friend who was driving had one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the gear the whole time.

Many people ride bikes here and for early morning rush hour, I decided that car’s the best way to visit Nandi hills.

Places to visit in Nandi Hills by walk

Nandi Hills Travel guide : All the places here are within walkable distances. When you wander the hills, you’ll find all these spots by yourself.

Here are all the places to visit in Nandi Hills by walk :

  • Sunrise View Point
  • Sunset View Point
  • Nandi Temple
  • Nandi Hills Park
  • Tipu Summer House
  • Amruth Sarovara Pond

Take a stroll around the hills, you’ll visit all of them. In fact, I didn’t know about these places before I began writing this post.

nandi hills trip, amruth sarovara pond

We didn’t get down to the Tipu Summer House but do visit it. The summer house is down the hill from the Sunrise viewpoint side, it has grand scenic views of the sunrise.

  • Sunrise and Sunset Viewpoints : While there’s a sunset viewpoint on the other side of the sunrise viewpoint, the sunrise is way better. It has a bridge made for the view.
  • Nandi Temple : It was easier to refer to the Nandi temple but there are other temples on the hills. The Nandi Temple is the one that’s behind the sunrise viewpoint. Some other temple names I looked up are Shri Verrajaneya, Maheshwara Temple, Ksheera Nadhi Moola, Bhramashram. There are many more as you walk along the road in their own devoted spots.
  • Nandi Hills Park : This park’s right at the center with beautiful greenery. The morning vibes while walking through the park is absolutely worth the visit. Take your time and wander everywhere through it. However, look out for the signs that don’t allow you to walk over some spots.
  • Tipu Summer House : We weren’t aware of the Tipu Summer house’s existence at the time. It’s a bit of a walk and you should visit it!
  • Amruth Sarovara Pond : You’ll find this while walking through the park.

Things to do in Nandi Hills

Most from Bangalore go for the drive and early sunrise in Nandi Hills. But with its popularity, so has its tourism that promotes living close to nature. There are resorts with various activities like camping, trekking on other hills, paragliding, and cycling.

However, these aren’t the main attractions of Nandi Hills. For those visiting from outside, you can find these activities anywhere else in the world.

Go for simple accommodations at reasonable prices and explore Nandi Hills and places nearby yourself.

Nandi Hills travel guide: One morning is sufficient to make this visit. The reason, why everyone in Bangalore is hyped about Nandi Hills, is because it gives most a moment of fresh air – a minute away from their busy lives. Every person has their own experience to share.

Some go for the sunset and most for the sunrise.

We prefer taking a car, most prefer motorcycles. But there are the cool ones who even wish to cycle or trek Nandi Hills! It’s all about how you go. If you have a cool experience to talk about, comment below.

The weather here is pleasant throughout the year but the best time to visit Nandi Hills is between September and May since the roads could be slippery and difficult to climb up during the remaining monsoon months.

Nandi Hills : Guide to a perfect one-day trip from Bangalore

nandi hills road trip

(Prologue: As I decided to move to Bangalore, the first thing I started checking was obviously the weekend getaways from the city. Nandi Hills was the name suggested to me by most people. Consequently, it was the first trip for me from Bangalore and surprisingly, it surpassed all expectations I had.)

February 8, 1pm, Edo:

This is a Japanese restaurant in the heart of Bangalore. Before getting on the road for Nandi Hills, we thought it will be nice to have some Japanese cuisine. It also seems to be the perfect place to start writing the travel story for my first trip from Bangalore. Word of caution though, it will probably be the shortest story from me ever, for this is just meant to be a one-day trip.

Nandi Hills is situated approximately 60 kilometers away from here. It is an ancient hill fortress built by Ganga Dynasty. It became more famous during the time of Tipu Sultan who strengthened the fortress and used it for multiple purposes. One of the major attraction is Tipu’s summer residence, while another is Tipu’s Drop. The latter is the point at the top of the hill from where prisoners used to be pushed off. Albeit it bears the horrific past, people nowadays say that the Drop can boast of the most magnificent view of the city. There are a couple of other nearby attractions as well, but our plan is simply to enjoy the view, relax and walk along the roads of the hills in this gorgeous weather. We are renting a car to go there, and will come back after watching the sunrise tomorrow morning.

February 8, 7:30pm, A restaurant on top of Nandi Hills:

It was a 1.5 hour long journey after lunch. Needless to say, it was splendid. As soon as we got out of the din and bustles of the city, the countryside greenery embraced us. The lack of traffic was a welcome treat for the eyes and the mind (anyone staying in Bangalore would agree, I guess). Gradually, the monolithic structure of Nandi Hills came into view. The car was on the winding roads of the hills soon after. Views from the car started becoming more and more spectacular with every turn. When we eventually pulled over at the KSTDC lodge, we knew that we would need to get on a walk along the roads of the hill. The sunset was also drawing nearer. So, we set out with our camera and a jacket. The first couple of spots we walked to provided stunning views and we were thrilled already.

nandi hills road trip

At the end of the road, which marks the end of the hill as well, there is a courtyard adorned with a small temple, which overlooks Tipu’s Drop. We approached that area and paid a visit to the old temple. Like most other old temples in southern India, it is also decorated with carved rocks. After spending a while inside, slowly we walked to the other side of the temple. This is where we realized that Nandi Hills deserves more credit than it gets.

It was sunset time. The place was nothing but large rocks and essentially the hill coming to an end. After taking a few pictures of the sunset sky, we decided to sit in the calmness and take in the serenity the place had to offer. Slowly, the lights of the city in the distance started to come on and it was a beautiful sight. It is also very close to a fullmoon night. As the sunlight waned off, the moonlight took over the hill and made it absolutely magical. The pictures below may not even do the slightest justice to the experience we had here.

nandi hills road trip

Anyway, we had to come for dinner, since most shops here close very early. We plan to walk around for a while after dinner. Tomorrow morning, we need to get up early for the sunrise. Maybe I will get back to the diary then only.

February 9, 9am, En route to Bangalore:

The trip is coming to an end. I told before, it was meant to be a short one. However, needless to say, it exceeded all expectations and we are content with what we witnessed. Well, if you think yesterday’s moonlit night was the highlight of the trip, you are wrong, for today’s sunrise showed why Nandi Hills is famous for this.

After waking up at 4:30am, we quickly put on our jackets and walked towards the same area as yesterday. Only this time, we faced east. There were already hundreds of people gathered. Within minutes, we realized why. The first light, the clouds, the sun peeking from behind the mountains – everything was perfect. Like most sunrises, it was shortlived and we could not take our eyes off the view for a second.

nandi hills road trip

With the sun coming up, those golden clouds disappeared but in came hundreds more people. This time, we understood why some friends did not like the vibe of the place. Nandi Hills attracts thousands of locals who usually come early in the morning to witness the sunrise. It becomes extremely crowded and for anyone who loves the tranquility, it is a messy affair. We also decided to leave after a small breakfast and now we are on our way back home.

I will leave with a recommendation for you though. If you are in Bangalore and have a day off, do visit Nandi Hills. Just plan to stay a night instead of coming in the morning. The combination of the nightly calmness and the gorgeous sunrise is going to fill your heart, that’s my promise.

An early morning drive to Nandi Hills from Bangalore !!

Nandi Hills

This is one of the famous & instantly plannable place for all Bangaloreans & each season has its own to beauty. What is so special about Nandi Hills that Bangaloreans don’t leave a chance to visit them as frequently as they can! And when it is about a long drive and a road trip, nothing can be more soothing. Ever imagined why? Well, it’s because of the beauty of sunrise one can witness along the way. It’s also because of the sweet chirps of the birds and the cool weather of the hills dressed with dense lush green forests. It’s also because of enormous opportunities of camping and trekking at the hills.

Photo of Nandi Hills, Karnataka, India by Travel Tales

Nandi Hills is about 50 km from the Hebbal Flyover on Airport Road (Bellary Road). You should consider leaving as early as possible in the morning as the beauty of the trip lies equally in the journey as in the destination. The sunrise welcomes you with a wide smile and then you are greeted with the hill tops appearing out of the white clouds.

Preferred mode of getting there:

- Your own bike/car

- rented self-drive bike/car, - taxi/cab services, - bus – least recommended.

Once you start driving towards Nandi Hills, beware of sharp turns and steep sides which have minimal barriers on the side. And more importantly, don’t keep the doors or windows of your cars remain open even for a second. It’s for no other reason but monkeys! A lot of monkeys which are pretty aggressive! And keeping food in your hand in front of them should not be imagined by you even in the wildest dreams.

You can do a lot of things at Nandi Hills – from paragliding to camping to cycling, you have it all. It’s complete fun package at one place! There are also several sightseeing locations in and around the hills. Here’s a list of top activities to try out and places to visit at Nandi Hills.

Tippu’s Drop

A cliff face at a height of 600 metre on Nandi Hills, you can get an amazing panoramic view of the entire city from Tippu’s Drop. This place also holds an interesting historic significance. It is said that prisoners were forced down this cliff to their depth in the ancient times and the rustling of leaves on windy nights represent their screams.

Tippu’s Residence

Tipu Sultan’s Palace is one of its kind that one must visit on a trip to Nandi Hills. The palace was initiated by Haider Ali but Tipu Sultan completed it later to use it as a summer resort. It was named as Tashk-e-Jannat by Tipu Sultan which means envy of heaven.

Nandi Temple

It is located at the foot of the hills and is dedicated to Bhoganandishwara and Yoganandeeshwara. The interior is beautifully decorated and gives a rustic feel of the past.

Paragliding

Nandi Hills is one of the few places in Karnataka where you can find paragliding options. This is the best way out to experience thrill and beauty all at once and is very popular among tourists.

Muddenahalli

Home to the Muddenahalli Museum, this place is famous for other noteworthy attractions like Anjaneya temple, Nellikaya Basavanna, Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple, Anthargange and Baananthi Bande.

Food at Nandi Hills

For those who really love food, there is a bad news. There are not more than 5 restaurants at the top of Nandi Hills so you don’t have a lot of options. One of them is run by the state government which doesn’t serve a lot of dishes to fulfill all of your wishes.

Another one is the Nandi Hills Restaurant which offers a good view of the hills through its glass wall. Unfortunately, the taste is not as good as it should be.

So its better that you carry your own eateries along the way and enjoy till the monkeys catch hold of you! There are some tea and snack stalls at the top of Nandi Hills which happen to be a good option for quick refreshments.

Any time of the year is good to visit this hill station. The climate is moderate and never goes to the extremes. The temperature at summer goes up to 25~28 degrees Celsius and in winter it falls as low as 8~10 degrees Celsius. Tourists mainly prefer visiting Nandi Hills during summer to escape the scorching heat of the sun.

Nandi Hills has always been a favorite destination for Bangaloreans. But, there is much more than just the sun rise, you can include in Nandi hills plan . If you are confused, how to plan a trip to nandi hills from bangalore , my detailed Nandi hills trip planner will help you plan an amazing trip.

Dec-Feb is the best time to visit for amazing views. Rather than a day trip, staying at hill top was an amazing and worth experience. We have been to Nandi hills for more than 5 times, but staying at Nandi hills resort on top of hills was a whole different experience. It’s completely worth it. If you can manage to get Nandi hills booking of stay, that would be the best way to enjoy your Nandi hills trip. This NANDI HILLS trip planner would be perfect and helpful for a wellplannedtrip to Nandi Hills.

Gates at the foot of the hills open around 6am & the vehicles queue up from as early as 5.30 . There will be huge queue of vehicles waiting. Once opened it will be rush of vehicles and bikers will be riding crazy. Once reaching entrance, u need to wait hours to get tickets. Then walk n reach top. By the time we would be reaching top, No real chance for enjoying the sun rise. Seeing many travel posts in social media with too much crowd and taking 3+ hours to reach the top in traffic.
When we go for day trip, due to the timings we can’t enjoy the sunrise and sunset fullest. It’s awesome experience to stay at top in Nandi hills resort , as we can avoid day crowd and enjoy sunrise and sunset from the hotel nearby areas itself. Always better to avoid crowd as much as possible for peaceful time. As it’s bit interior, day crowd won’t come near this areas.
IMPORTANT If you have booking at Mayura pine top ( Nandi hills resort run by govt at hilltop) you can get entry. Please find the link to book in the blog Follow us on Instagram @wellplannedtrip for latest updates 😍

Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple

Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple

Its so beautiful temple and the atmosphere is so calm. Temple’s architecture will leave you amazed.

After temple visit, just for curiosity we rode towards Chikkaballapur village. Inside areas of the village must be beautiful, but we just went a round in the main roads as time was limited. We had our lunch from hotel Green chilly, Chikkaballapur. It was near main road, and the food exceeded our expectations. Best ever Gobi chilly I had and the butter nan was also nice.

After that we headed back to Nandi hills. On the way back, ie between Chikkballapur and Bhoga Nandeeshwara Temple we found beautiful grape farms on the sides. We stopped by and requested the care taker to click some pics and luckily he agreed. It was so cherishing and beautiful experience being in the green grape farm, having grapes hanging all over your head. For watering, they had put small pipes all over the top. Grape farm visit was unexpected and surely became a highlight of our trip.

By evening, we walked a little from the hotel and enjoyed the sun set. Good thing this, you can be away from the crowd and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.

NANDI HILLS sun set

Morning, we got up early and got ready for the Sunrise. From the hotel itself we could enjoy the sun rise. Nandi hills is very much crowded when you get to the sun rise point. If you would like to enjoy a peaceful sun rise with your partner/friends this is a good option.

  • Visiting Nandi Hills on a weekday requires no special permission. However, if your excursion falls on a weekend, it’s essential to register your travel on the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSTDC) website.
  • Exercise caution while navigating the route, as Nandi Hills features approximately eight hairpin bends, posing potential risks for those less experienced in driving or riding.
  • Before embarking on the journey, ensure your vehicle is in top-notch condition to handle the ascent.
  • Parking charges are INR 20 for two-wheelers and INR 50 for four-wheelers.
  • Anticipate crowds, even on weekdays, as Nandi Hills attracts many visitors. Planning and being mindful of the travel regulations will contribute to a smoother and more enjoyable experience.

By Public Transport

Nandi Hills is conveniently accessible by public transportation, specifically buses operated by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSTDC). These buses ply regularly between Majestic in Bangalore and the hilltop of Nandi Hills. Opting for the bus allows for a day trip, with the ease of boarding directly at the Majestic bus stop. Tickets can be purchased directly from the bus conductor or the ticketing office at Majestic, eliminating the need for pre-booking. However, it’s worth noting that the bus timings may not align with sunrise, limiting this experience for visitors.

An alternative route to reach Nandi Hills is by train. The Chikkaballapura train station, situated approximately 9 kilometres from Nandi Hills, serves as a transit point. Regular trains operate between Chikkaballapura and Majestic train stations, with online booking available through IRCTC . From the Chikkaballapura train station, local auto-rickshaws are readily available to transport visitors to the base of Nandi Hills. This provides another convenient option for those seeking a varied mode of transportation to reach the picturesque destination.

At the summit of Nandi Hills stands the Yoganandeeshwara Swamy temple, an ancient religious site from the 11th century. Founded by the Chola Kings, it is one of the region’s oldest temples. In the 14th century, the Vijayanagara Kings undertook extensive renovations, enhancing and embellishing the temple.

Constructed in the distinctive Dravida and Chola style of architecture, the temple boasts intricate design elements that reflect the historical and cultural richness of the era. This sacred site on Nandi Hills is a testament to the region’s enduring spiritual and architectural legacy.

DAY TRIP FROM BANGALORE – NANDI HILLS AND LEPAKSHI

nandi hills road trip

One day trips are always good and rejuvenating… to escape from the hustling life, traffic of city to the getaway landscapes around Bangalore to enjoy nature’s goodness and if possible to explore some history in the form of ancient temples/monuments to understand the associated stories and to indulge in its piousness. One long weekend, we decided to have a day trip to Lepakshi and Nandihills with stop-over at  Muddenahalli .

Nandi Hills

Our first destination was Nandi hills. Nandi hills is a beautiful hill station about 60 kms from Bangalore towards North.. past the Bangalore International airport at Devanahalli. A Sunrise at Nandi hills is very special .. beauty of Sun, sweet chirps of the birds amidst lush green forest and the cool weather of the hills .. a paradise . To witness this beauty we had to leave house at 4.00 AM … but with two small kids , planning an early morning road trip is very challenging .. so we decided to take it easy and skip Sunrise .

nandi hills

The drive to Nandihills from Bangalore is very scenic , roads very beautiful with clear signboards to guide you through .  As you start climbing the hill, the road turns curvy with few tricky hair pin bends. Make sure you drive safe.We reached to the top of Nandi hills around 8:30am. We knew that we don’t get anything decent to eat at Hills so finished our breakfast before reaching . As we reached the gate, one of those typical fort types entrance .. Boy-o-boy .. the place was so crowded ! We could see all kind of bikes, motorists heading towards the Nandi hills. Nandi Hills is believed to be a cyclist’s paradise, with around 400 meters of altitude and approximate 7 km of hill terrain ride up to the top. The bikers/cyclists from Bangalore storm here on weekends and holidays. It’s a very good hill training spot for trekkers, photographers and cyclists alike. We saw motorists racing through the lanes to the top of the hills. Parking was bit of a problem as traffic was slowly moving to the top but we finally found a space . You need to pay for the entry fees and parking fees to enter the premises managed by the Karnataka tourism department.

@Nandi hills one can definitely spend 2-3 hours if you have to see all places but there are few visitors who hang  a complete day and spend a relaxed time amidst nature . Get a picnic basket from home and enjoy..  There is enough area, various view points and parks that one can spend the day there.

nandi hills road trip

Some spots to see in Nandi hills include:

Sunrise view point : This is a splendid location for photographers and visitors to capture and relish the early moments of the day. The top is very beautiful, windy and cloudy .

nandi hills road trip

Tipu’s Summer Palace and Fort: There is nothing much to talk about in terms of grandeur but it stands to this day as a testament to ancient architecture .It is made of entirely of wood .

tippu summer palace nandi hills

Gavi Veerbhadra Swamy temple : on top of the hill, on the way to the Sultanpet, from Tippus palace, natural formation of huge boulders has been transformed into a temple.

nandi hills

Yoga Narasimha Temple -a beautiful simple Hindu temple which is usually not that crowded .

nandi hills road trip

Paragliding – Nandi Hills is one of the unique place in Karnataka which offers paragliding activity during the vacation seasons.

Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple

We left the Nandi hills around 12:30 pm to go to our next destination, the Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple at the bottom of the hills.

nandi hills road trip

The 19th century Bhoga Nandeeshwara temple in Nandi village is one of the oldest and most beautiful temples, dedicated to Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati and Nandi. The temple is built in Dravidian style of architecture and has two large shrines: the “Arunachaleswara”, and the “Bhoga Nandeeshwara”. In between, there is a small intervening shrine called with “Uma-Maheshwara” shrine with a Kalyana mantapa (“marriage hall”) supported by ornate pillars in black stone with reliefs depicting of the Hindu gods.

nandi hills road trip

Beyond this compound is a large stepped temple tank “Kalyani”…

nandi hills road trip

Muddenahalli

From this temple we went to the Muddenahalli which is about 2 kms away… to see the birth place of our renowned engineer and Bharat Rathna Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah. The house where he was born is converted to museum now  and adjacent to this museum is the place where his memorial is constructed .

mudenahalli

Next we halted for about an hour in one of the small temples on the way to Lepakshi… to eat lunch which we had carried with us from Bangalore. I tell you this was one of the best decisions we did as we hardly could spot some decent restaurant in this route .  After having our lunch amidst serene nature and a small rest , made us recharged to proceed towards our next destination –  Lepakshi.

Lepakshi is  a small village about about 130 km from Bangalore and  70 kms from Muddenahalli .Lepakshi is famous for Virabhadra temple built in 15th century by Vijayanagara kings and known for the largest monolith of Nandi and the Nagalinga. The road to Lepakshi ,Bangalore to Hyderabad  highway ( NH 44 ) is excellent til Bagepalli . After crossing Bagepalli village there is a toll plaza crossing which we need to take the left deviation at about 4km and drive 15 kms from there. The drive stretch is really bad.

We reached Lepakshi around 3:30pm and we were welcomed by the sight of the large monolithic Nandi statue. The 15 feet height and 27 feet length statue is said to be biggest Nandi in India .Carved out of a single stone , the Nandi faces the temple. We were impressed with the maintenance of the place .

lepakshi

From the Nandi statue we went to the ancient Veerbhadra temple situated around 500metres . The temple built in the mid-16th century by brothers Viranna and Virupanna, the then Vijayanagara governors of Penukonda.

nandi hills road trip

As the history goes, it is said that Viranna executed the plan in the absence of the king and used the treasure. When the construction was almost finished, the king returned and found the treasure empty. The king ordered, as a punishment to this heinous crime, that he should be blinded. The Virupanna being a loyal person carried out the punishment spot with his own hands. Even today one can see two dark stains upon the wall near the ‘Kalyana Mandapa’, which are said to be the marks made by his eyes, which he himself dashed against the wall.

nandi hills road trip

Another legendary story associated with the village takes us back to the Ramayana period . It is said that , Jatayu during the fight with Ravana to save Sita from getting kidnapped ,  got wounded and fell at Lepakshi . When Lord Rama visited this site ,  Jatayu attained moksha . And hence the name of the place Le Pakshi – derived from “Laya pakshi” (unconscious bird).  There is a Ramalingam and a Hanuman Lingam installed by Rama and Anjaneya respectively.

lepakshi

This temple is divided into three parts – the ‘Mukha Mandapa’, ‘Artha Mandapa’ and ‘Garbha Griha’.

nandi hills road trip

Entire temple is covered with the finest masterpiece of the art and sculpture . Each pillar is different from the other and has a story to tell . Definitely a paradise for photographers and art lover .. .

nandi hills road trip

Don’t miss out the floating pillar- a pillar that is attached at the top but does not touch the ground. One can easily slide news paper through it .

nandi hills road trip

The ceilings have paintings depicting the stories of Hindu` gods.

lepakshi

The monolithic Nagalingesvara statue in the temple premises is one of the main attractions, the seven headed serpents shielding a huge Shiva linga. We were told that if we stood on top of that sculpture, we could see the Nandi statue.

lepakshi

Next to this we can see the beautiful red stone Ganesha idol carved inside the mantapa on the same stone.

lepakshi

As we step outside the temple , one can see uncompleted gorgeous Kalyana Mantapa having beautiful carvings on its pillars depicting different Hindu gods and goddesses. It is said that Lord Shiva and Parvathi got married here …

nandi hills road trip

Near the kalyana mantapa there is an interesting giant footprint with traces of water in it. As per the folklore it is believed that during the Ramayana the bird Jatayu fell here and Sita pressed her footprint here to provide water to Jatayu to survive till he narrates his fight and gives direction to Rama and Lakshmana.

lepakshi

By around 6.00 PM we were done with seeing the temples and clicking don’t know how many pics . If you are planning a photo shoot for pre wedding or for classical dancer .. lepakshi is picture perfect .We loved Lepakshi as it is so serene , peaceful and well maintained  !!

lepakshi

Don’t know how far all these stories are true .. but inspite of travelling since morning kids didn’t crib as they were super excited and curious to see some places associated with Ramayana .. all these days they had just heard them in stories . I really missed my evening tea as unfortunately there is no decent restaurant around till you hit highway .

nandi hills road trip

We reached home around 8.30 PM .It was a nice drive and we were back after a good satisfied day’s outing. We felt very refreshed the next day… ☺ Nandi hills and Lepakshi is yet another place where I would like to return again some day to spend more time.

nandi hills road trip

Bangalore’s own little hill-station

Nandi hills needs no introduction to a lot of people from Bangalore. Ask any Bangalorean a quick getaway location away from the city for a day trip and viola, ‘Nandi hills’ is the place most suggested.

To a lot of people it is just a small little hillock best enjoyed for its cool weather along with beautiful sunrise/sunset, having the remains of the fort built by the 18 th century ruler Tippu Sultan. There is a certain truth to that statement, but there is more to it than that.

Quite recently I decided to explore this place. We were 3 of us who set off at 7am in the morning from South Bangalore, covering a distance of approx. 70kms in 2.5hrs. This included a quick breakfast stop in between, in a place called Sri Krishna Garden, where some idli, vada, kara bath and puri did the job of filling us up with carbs for what was to come ahead.

nandi hills road trip

Most people drive up to the hills. But our plan was to trek up using the old stairway, used during Tippus time. So instead of taking the left turn on the Nandi hills road, we took a right and headed to Sultanpet for the starting point of this trek. Google map shows this as ‘Nandi hills trek starting point’ but we took the help of locals in finding the direction the old – fashioned way.

nandi hills road trip

On reaching the foothills of the trek point at 9.30am, we set off on foot climbing the stairs which is relatively easy but takes around an hour to reach one of the fort entrances. The trek itself was a pleasant one, where we pass through few resting points along the way made of granite stones which look old. The path is well shaded with a lot of trees and pleasant breeze to counter our sweat, and beautiful view points along the way to treat our eyes.

nandi hills road trip

On entering the fort walls we first pass through a small Shiva temple called Sri Gavi Veerabadhra Swamy temple which is inside of a small cave formation. The priest told us that the temple is an old one dating to more than 500 years back. Continuing further we come across Tippu’s rest house which is a two – storey red building, which the Sultan used often during his glory days.

nandi hills road trip

Further up we came across the Amrutha Sarovara, a step well reservoir built in 1928 and if you spend some time here looking at the water you can see big orange fish jump out of the water, which is quite fascinating. It is also a great spot for taking pictures, and the reason why a couple were dressed elaborately for what seemed to be a pre-wedding photoshoot accompanied by their photographer.

nandi hills road trip

While trying to get around the step-well we discovered a spot right behind it, which often misses the visitor’s eye. The entrance to this was quite tricky, and we really had to break a few rules to get across the fence to this place, and boy was it worth it! It looked like a place out of a fairy tale, where a small path, above which there was tree branches hovering over, led to a small statue of a Nandi and an even smaller one beside it, looking over at the Amrutha Sarovara.

nandi hills road trip

Soaking in the vibes of this magical place we walked further up the hills and made a climb towards Tippus drop point and although we did not go all the way towards it, the views from here are quite nice. On a summer day this would be very hot place, being a barren rock with no trees in sight. Walking up, this boulder formation gives way to old stone steps that goes up to the Yoganandeeshwara temple. This is an old Shiva temple dating back to 1000 years, which represents his final renunciation stage (his childhood, youth and married stage is depicted in the beautiful Bhooganandishwara temple at the base of Nandi hills). We spent a bit of time here looking around the temple, where you can see carvings on the granite flooring, inscriptions on the entrance wall and even a small step well inside the temple premises.

nandi hills road trip

A glass bridge near Hotel Mayuri, is where you can see lot of tourists hovering over for the view point. There are quite a few monkeys in this area too, and we spotted one on this bridge, eating away some ice-cream reluctantly given away by a tourist, who anticipated some trouble if he hadn’t. Hotel Mayuri located besides the bridge is the only proper sit down restaurant on the top where you can grab some lunch, and although the food isn’t so great, the view from here, certainly is! There are a few smaller tea/coffee shops that serve some quick fast food and snack items.

nandi hills road trip

After lunch we took the small pathway towards the fort walls and walked around a little getting lost, but finally reached the point which happened to be the source of the river Palar. Right around the same area is also a small shrine of Nandi which is referred to as the Nellakai Nandi (Nellakai meaning gooseberry) whose tree is outside of the shrine.

It was time to head back early, since we also had a descent to make through the same stone steps we took up. On the way back we made a last stop to have a look at The Cubbon House, which was built in the mid 1800’s as a summer retreat for Mark Cubbon (the British commissioner after whom Cubbon park has been named). This was undergoing renovation, but you could still see some old chandeliers and wood work from that period.

nandi hills road trip

The descent takes about the same time as getting on top, which is about an hour, although I took a few minutes longer due to my bad knees. It was 3.30pm at the base of the Nandi hills, and getting back to Bangalore city wasn’t too much of a problem leaving the part near the Hebbal flyover (there is always such slow-moving traffic here) We made it just before the peak hour traffic could begin.

A nice cup of coffee back home was what made the perfect end to this day’s adventure 🙂

Isha Foundation Bangalore & Nandi Hills | Complete One day trip guide!

Isha Yoga centre Bangalore

Last updated on February 20th, 2024 at 01:16 pm

Isha Foundation Bangalore with Adi Yogi statue near Chikkaballapur is now open to the public. Though it is still under construction, you can visit the place and see the exquisite Adi Yogi statue, Yogishwara Linga shrine and Naga mantapa.

You can combine this place with perennial favourite Nandi Hills for a lovely one-day trip.

Here is a detailed one-day trip itinerary for visiting Isha Foundation Bangalore near Chikkaballlapur and Nandi Hills from Bangalore.

If you want to go only to Isha Foundation Bangalore, it will be a half-day trip from Bangalore. You can check this link for complete details – https://traveltwosome.com/isha-foundation-chikkaballapur-a-complete-guide/

Alternatively, you may do isha in the first half and nandi in the second half of the day..

We strongly recommend not planning this trip on the weekend / Public holiday due to heavy crowds and traffic jams, especially on the road from the highway leading to Isha Foundation Bangalore.

Another option is to leave leisurely around 12 PM. Have lunch in Nandi Upachar and visit Nandi Hills first. After Nandi Hills and Temple go to Isha around 5.30 PM explore the place and stay back for the lovely laser show which happens between 7.15 – 7.30 PM. Finish that and have dinner on the way and come back home.

You may also combine Isha Foundation with other exciting places nearby instead of Nandi Hills. Look for details in the Travel Tips section.

The summer months will be hot during the day. Please cover well and drink a lot of water.

Now let us go into details 😊

We went to Isha Foundation Bangalore a few months back which has the Adiyogi statue and Naga Mantapa. The place is situated near Chikkaballapur on the Bangalore – Hyderabad highway. Chikkaballapur to Isha Foundation distance via National Highway which is the best road is 12 KMs.

The location of the centre is in a bowl surrounded by rolling hills. The place is under construction. However, the Adi Yogi statue is complete and so is the Naga Mantapa. It will however take another year or two for the whole project to be completed.
