Statue of Liberty and her NYC Tourist Halloween mommy and Me Costume

Here at Lars we live for a little holiday (well, not so little to us) called Halloween! If you don’t already know, I basically spend every day, spring, summer, winter, and fall thinking of what I should dress up as. I’m not even ashamed; to me, Halloween is the most wonderful time of the year! With this deep love comes a deep responsibility to dress up not just myself, but Jasper as well. I’ve got to make good use of the golden years, and by golden years, I mean a time when Jasper doesn’t get a say in what he would like to go as. 

As I thought about the many things that a mother could force her son to dress up as, I realized I could finally realize one of my greatest dreams. In my humble opinion, there is no better outfit for a mother and a mother’s boy than Lady Liberty and her loyal tourist. After deciding on a theme, we partnered up with Cricut to bring you the magnificent Statue of Liberty with the tiniest (and possibly the cutest) tourist you’ve ever seen. The most important aspects of the costumes consist of paper and Everyday Iron-On vinyl. The other pieces you can find in your closet or sew up for a quick liberty dress! To make this even easier, we provided a template you need to cut the elements out! Seriously, so easy.

Mommy and Me Statue of Liberty and Tourist Costume

How to make a Lady Liberty Torch

• 1 piece of 12” paper
• 1 piece of 12” paper in a darker or lighter color 
• 1 piece of 12×24” paper
• Scoring wheel
• Templates on DesignSpace
• Follow the instructions in Design Space to cut out and score your pieces.
• Begin the assembly process by taking the rectangle with the small slits and gluing it into a cylinder. This is the handle of the torch.
• Take the larger circle with the slits and fold the pieces at the scored lines–this will create a decorative extension from the handle to the resting plate.Glue it together to form a cylinder. Glue the solid portion into the inside of the main handle.
• With the solid rectangle piece, create a cylinder and glue it together. Glue this into the inside of the handle. This is for a 3D effect.
• Create the resting plate (the piece under the flames)–the circle with the cut out tabs. Fold the tabs up. Glue this to the top of the handle. There will be about a ¼” space between the extended handle and the plate.
• Take your lace piece and fold the tabs under. Glue the ends together to form a circle. Glue the tabs onto the inside of the resting plate. It will be about a ¼” from the edge of the resting plate.
• Create your last cylinder with the smallest rectangle with the cut out tabs by gluing the ends together and fold out the tabs. Glue the tabs to the resting place.
• Insert your flames into the top cylinder. You can curve them to keep them in place.

How to make a Lady Liberty Paper Crown

• 1 12” piece of cardstock
• Rotary blade
• Templates to DesignSpace
• Follow the instructions on Design Space to cut out your pieces
• Fold the spikes of the crown
• Use the tabs of the front piece on top and glue them behind each space of the spikes
• Fold the tabs of the front piece down on the bottom and glue the bottom portion to the back. It should extend out for a three dimensional effect.

• Everyday Iron-On vinyls in yellow, blue, pink, black, light blue, green
• 100% cotton t-shirt 
• EasyPress 2 (or iron) 
• Colored cardstock in yellow, blue, pink, black, red, green, brown, white
• Follow the instructions on Design Space to cut out your pieces. Don’t forget to mirror your images before you cut! 
• In order to press all pieces at once, we removed each iron-on materials from their backing and placed them all on just one of the sticky backing sheets (it is important to use the provided carrier sheet, which is specifically formulated to protect the material from heat)
• Place cut-outs on the carrier paper in their correct positions to create the camera and the fanny pack. 
• Be sure to place iron-on material in with the correct side up. 
• Follow EasyPress 2 instructions to apply the everyday iron-on camera and fanny pack.
• For the tourist pins, group the pieces for each pin together 
• Create the smiley face using a small amount of glue and a circle cut to the correct size for the pieces to be assembled on top of it 
• Repeat with other pins

My 6th grade daughter is dressing up as and presenting a research paper on the Statue of Liberty for quite a few people next month and your costume is our inspiration. It’s just beautiful! I was wondering what products you used for your actual face/body & hair makeup? I’ve done a search and not coming up with much and it’s certainly not my area of expertise. Thanks!

DIY Costumes: Travel Inspired Costumes for Kids

Ready for some travel inspired costumes for kids? We love to travel and love reading books about different cities. It’s a way we prepare for trips and a way we think of new places we’d like to see. This month we created costumes inspired by some of our favorite places we’ve been and a few area characters from our favorite books about those cities. These are fun for Halloween and school events like “dress like your favorite book character” day. These are EASY DIY costumes. I made all of them without sewing at all. All of the clothing supplies are from Primary.com and then I got the accessories on Amazon or from the craft store. None of these costumes took long to make at all. All are easy and fun!

DIY Statue of Liberty Costume (NYC Costume!)

• French Terry Dress
• Long Sleeve Tee
• Statue of Liberty foam crown
• Torch: green, orange and yellow cardstock

Directions: This may be the easiest costume I have made and the one I know we’ll reuse the “supplies” the most. The green dress and green tights are super soft and I know will be worn all the time for school. Plus they’ll be great come Christmas and St. Patrick’s day. We had the crown and the torch is a rolled piece of paper.

To make this costume, we started with the dress and tights. Then I ordered an extra long sleeve green tshirt from Primary in the biggest size they have (size 12). I cut the tshirt right down the middle (the middle of the front of the shirt). Then I tied the shirt around her shoulder using the 2 long sleeves. I was able to make it look more “slouched” because the shirt was cut in half.

Here’s exactly what I used. I linked each item & I ordered the color “grass”:

French Terry Dress // Leggings // Long Sleeve Tee

DIY Paddington Bear Costume (London Costume!)

• puffer vest
• long sleeve blue shirt
• yellow rain boots
• red bucket hat
• brown suitcase

Directions: Ok, maybe this was actually the easiest, most reusable costume ever! I just got Tommy dressed in his brown pj pants, blue long sleeve tshirt, blue vest, boots & hat. Then I added on the toggles (ordered from craft store site for $2 each). I added with super sticky tape so we could reuse the vest easily. They look so cute that I am thinking about sewing them on. That’s an option too if you want to break out the needle & thread. For the suitcase, I just cut out a piece of paper in the shape of a tag and wrote the classic Paddington Bear message on it. Oh… last but not least, draw on a little bear nose with an eyeliner pencil.

Here’s exactly what I used. I linked each item & I ordered the color cobalt for the shirt/vest:

DIY Gondolier Costume (Venice Costume!)

• Long sleeve shirt
•   black yoga pants
• black electrical tape
• gondolier hat (Amazon)
• Wide red ribbon and narrow red ribbon

Oar Supplies:

• Wrapping paper tube
• Black spray paint

Directions: We loved meeting the gondoliers this summer in Italy. We had a wonderful gondolier on our gondola ride who sang. My kids talk about it all the time so this was a really fun costume. To make a gondolier shirt, we started with a long sleeve tee and added on wide stripes using electrical tape. For the solid red neck tie, we cut a red tshirt. This gave it the “gondolier” look we were going for. Then we tied a red ribbon around the waist and around the hat. To make the oar we spray painted a wrapping paper tube black. Then we cut out two oar shape pieces from a cardboard box and spray painted those too. When everything was dry, we glued them to the wrapping paper tube.

Here are the exact items we ordered:

RoRo Loves the Statue of Liberty

This homemade costume for boys entered our 2016 Halloween Costume Contest .

A word from Terri, the 'Statue of Liberty' costume creator:

RoRo is 6.25 yrs old and loves the SOL so much that we drove to see her last spring break. He is half Afghan. His dad fled in the 80s when the Soviets invaded Afghanistan, so welcoming immigrants is meaningful to us. In this divisive election, we want to remind Americans to be loving, welcoming, helpful, and inclusive. Ro is also comfortable with bending rigid, traditional gender rules, so dressing up as the SOL made perfect sense to him and he beams proud in this costume. Not counting the sneakers and long johns, which can be used beyond Halloween, the whole thing costs about $7 (material, visor, gloves, felt) and includes a lot of stuff I had around the house (scotch tape, glue, string, electrical tape, letters, sharpie marker, cardboard, thread, eyeshadow, staples, socks, graham cracker box, flashlight, zip ties).

PLAN YOUR VOYAGE

How to purchase tickets.

Statue City Cruises is the ONLY vendor authorized to provide tickets and transportation to Liberty and Ellis Islands. No other ferry company can give you access to the Islands, monuments, and museums. Additional tickets are not needed to enter the Statue of Liberty Museum or Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration.

• To purchase tickets in advance, Go to StatueCityCruises.com or call 1-877-523-9849 (877-LADY-TIX).
• Tickets can be purchased in person at the Statue City Cruises ticket booths located in Castle Clinton in Battery Park (NYC) or at the ferry departure point in Liberty State Park in New Jersey.

Ferry schedules change seasonally and during periods of high tourism. Up-to-date schedules are posted on the Statue City Cruises website. To guarantee entry, purchasing tickets in advance is recommended.

What's Included With Your Ticket

• Round-trip ferry service with stops at Liberty Island and Ellis Island.
• Access to the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration and the Statue of Liberty Museum.
• Self-guided audio tours, which can be picked up on each Island. Content is available in 12 languages: Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. A family-friendly tour is also available, as are an American Sign Language (ASL) version and an Audio Descriptive (AD) version.

• Local 1 (7th Avenue Line) to the last stop – South Ferry
• Express 4 or 5 (Lexington Avenue Line) to Bowling Green
• Local R/W train from Brooklyn/Queens (Broadway Line) to Whitehall Street
• M1, M6 or M15 to South Ferry (last stop)
• From the East Side take the FDR Drive South to Exit 1, South Ferry/Battery Park
• From the West Side take the Westside Highway South (Route 9A) to Battery Park
• NOTE: Street and private garage parking is limited in the Battery Park neighborhood

• Take exit 14-B off the New Jersey Turnpike; follow signs to Liberty State Park
• Ample parking is available in Liberty State Park, for a nominal fee

By Public Transportation:

• Take the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail (HBLR) to the Liberty State Park Station; walk or bike one mile along Audrey Zapp Drive to the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal in Liberty State Park
• The HBLR is accessible via PATH at the Hoboken Station or Newport (Jersey City) Station

WHAT TO EXPECT

Liberty island.

Liberty Island is home to a beautiful park, an innovative museum, and America’s most iconic symbol of promise and possibility. As you explore the grounds, take in Lady Liberty from different angles noting her design details and how her appearance changes with the light.

The Statue of Liberty Museum is an experience unto itself. Full of incredible exhibits, the Museum gives color and context to the Statue and houses her original torch. Before you depart Liberty Island, be sure to visit the Liberty Vista atop the Museum for breathtaking views of the Statue and New York Harbor.

No additional ticket is needed to visit the museum.

Visitors to Ellis Island are given a unique view of American history. Beautifully restored to its peak operating period, the main building allows park-goers to step into Ellis Island travelers’ shoes for a sense of the immigrant journey.

At the Ellis Island National Immigration Museum, voyages come to life through a stunning collection of artifacts. Exhibits chronicle America’s immigration history from the 1500s through to today.

Visit the American Family Immigration History Center , located on the first floor, to discover your connections to Ellis Island. And while walking the grounds, explore The American Immigrant Wall of Honor , which celebrates immigrants of all eras.
