Building Relationships. Building Community.

Relationships are the heart and soul of our two, three, and four day camp experiences. From the way we teach trails to the way we serve our meals, we’ve engineered every detail to strengthen the bonds of friendship in the classroom, and encourage the development of community back home. Meals served family style around a large table, opportunities for free play, hands-on team oriented activities, plenty of thoughtful discussion and a shared cabin all contribute to a healthy environment of relational development. Break outside the mold of the classroom and discover a new side to your students and yourself. In our environment, don’t be surprised when your students reveal unknown strengths, become leaders, ask questions, speak out, and discover their potential. At the end of your trip, you’ll leave with a tighter-knit group of students, new friendships with your students’ parents, and a shared experience that will bring your community closer together for years.

Foundations for Success

Building future leaders starts here, grades 5 – 8.

The world’s most influential people didn’t achieve success through sheer luck. Instead, they mastered a number of key skills that help them make decisions, navigate complex issues, and harness the power of the group.

In the Foundations for Success program, students are introduced to five of those key skills: leadership, trust, communication, problem solving, and self-confidence. Through a number of challenging, team-oriented activities, students will utilize these foundations in ways that will benefit them both inside the classroom and out.

Every activity encourages students to apply the five foundations in creative and insightful ways. In Camp Tecumseh’s outdoor classroom, students are challenged to negotiate tricky group dynamics, solve complex puzzles, and think on their feet while developing empathy for others.

Pioneer Heritage

Bringing 1811 to life.

In the early 1800’s individuals flocked to the Indiana Territory under the promise of a better life. Over the years they developed a way of life that rewarded hard work. While books and pictures tell part of that story, Camp Tecumseh brings the pioneer times to life through authentic, hands-on pioneer experiences. Build a log cabin; grind cornmeal and learn how to make biscuits over a fire; set a trap line and learn how to catch and trade the pelt of a fox; create an improvised bridge that you and your compatriots can cross; go fishing with nothing but a hook, some line, and a stick; care for barnyard animals; navigate through the woods using landmarks; explore the diversities of the Native cultures of Indiana; and so much more. The kids are in the center of the action as they learn to live life as a pioneer.

Earthship Journey

Get your hands dirty learning about the earth.

In the Earthship Journey program, students get their hands dirty in our three different ecosystems as they discover the remarkable processes of nature and the value of environmental responsibility. The Earthship code is the guiding principle behind every activity. Consisting of cycles, sunlight energy, changes, relationships, communities, differences, and gifts, the code provides a framework for understanding the mechanisms behind the wonders of nature. Dig into the soil, investigate animal habitats, write tree themed poetry, learn how foresters calculate the amount of timber in trees, catch and investigate invertebrates living in the creek bed, and so much more. In addition to these activities, each student also takes part in recreational activities including canoeing and archery.

The Magic of the Night

Magic happens when the sun goes down at Camp Tecumseh. A roaring fire and wholesome entertainment will have you and your students singing and dancing, acting and laughing as our staff leads you through songs, skits, and jokes that will have your class telling stories for years. After campfire, take a hike through the woods without any light. Follow our staff as they teach you and your students how to navigate using your ears and your sense of touch. Lie on your back beneath a shimmering blanket of stars and learn about the constellations and the wide universe. Listen to the gleeful shouts of students as they shoot down the Bullet slide or the Black Hole slide in darkness. Witness the bonds of friendship forming in the cabin before bedtime as students, chaperones, and teachers recount the day’s events as they slowly nod off to sleep.

  • Library: Not every student’s parents take them to story time. Schedule your own trip, and show kids that having fun isn’t hard when you have a library card!
  • Farm: Whether you learn how vegetables are grown or where milk and eggs come from, the farm is always a hit.
  • Grocery store: Go behind the scenes at the supermarket, and use this trip as the foundation for lessons on healthy eating.
  • Park: From local playgrounds to majestic national parks, it’s always worth getting kids into the great outdoors.
  • Children’s museum: This is the age group most children’s museums were designed for! They’ll love all the hands-on fun and excitement.
  • Post office: Learn how mail is sorted and shipped, and teach students about stamps and other mail-related items.
  • Bank: Money is a new concept for these kiddos, and they’ll be fascinated to step inside the vault and learn other bank secrets.
  • Fire station: There’s just something about a fire truck that gets every little one excited.
  • Nursing home: Is there anything sweeter than watching seniors and wee ones spend time together?
  • Animal shelter: For kids who don’t have pets at home, this can be a good introduction to animals. Others will just enjoy the time with dogs and cats waiting for their forever homes.

For this age group, you’ll need to step up your game a bit. (They’ve probably already been to the zoo, the aquarium, and the art museum.) Try some of these locations, which offer educational, social-emotional, and real-life learning opportunities.

  • Food bank: Hold a food drive, then arrange a trip to your local soup kitchen or food pantry. Volunteering makes for truly meaningful field trips.
  • Recycling facility: In a time when reducing landfill waste is more important than ever, a trip to a recycling facility can help drive home the message.
  • Theater: Many theaters offer behind-the-scenes tours for schools and discount pricing when you buy tickets in bulk. (Want to go virtual? Check out the Hamilton Education Program !)
  • Community college: Parents sometimes take kids on college visits, but a community college trip offers opportunities for even more students to see themselves getting a higher education.
  • TV station: Kids interested in communications or technology will find this completely fascinating.
  • Courtroom: There’s no better way to understand the justice system than to see it in action.
  • State or county capitol: Every government class should visit a local capitol to meet with officials and see how the government works.
  • Local business: This can be a cool way to learn about managing a business, working with customers, or discovering how products are made.
  • Wildlife rehab facility: Introduce students to the people who help injured wild animals recover and live free once again.

How to Plan an Outdoor School Trip

April 11, 2023

outdoor education field trips near me

Understanding What an ‘Outdoor Education’ Trip Means

If you are reading this, you’ve probably run into a few snags planning your next school trip . You may know Pali for our outstanding summer camps , but did you know we do more outdoor education than anything else?! We can help you plan and assemble a custom course exactly to your liking. But first, a little background.  Outdoor education is often referred to as synonymous with outdoor learning, outdoor school, wilderness education. The hallmark of outdoor education is its focus on the “outdoor” side of this education.

At Pali, we like to call it Outdoor Education (or OE for short). When referring to any “education outside the classroom” there are so many options to choose from, that’s why at Pali, we customize a program to your specific needs. Here are the 10 things you’ll want to think about before booking your school’s outdoor education program , some you may have thought of, but others may surprise you.

10 Guidelines to Planning a School Trip Focused on Outdoor Education

1.  accreditation  .

All camps and facilities are not created equal.  Price and distance can be a big factor so be sure the quality of programs and curricula are recognized by one or more licensed body to insure that all NGSS guidelines are followed.  Pali Institute is a leader in outdoor education. We are extremely proud to be the ONLY residential outdoor education program accredited by the  Western Association of Schools & Colleges (WASC) which holds us to more than one hundred professional standards and guidelines. We also adhere to an experiential model of learning, and are accredited by the  Association for Experiential Education (AEE).  Through the accreditation processes, Pali Institute is able to maintain high standards for the curriculum, risk management and participant safety.

2. Safety & Supervision

Many factors contribute to a Camps safety including quality of staff, facility & equipment maintenance, and medical facilities and preparedness.  At Pali we believe the most important factor is our highly trained outdoor education staff who provide around the clock supervision and instruction, allowing teachers to relax, observe and engage with their students in educational activities. Two full-time registered nurses are available from 7:00am – 10:00pm. With Pali’s highly qualified team in place, your students will be safely cared for while discovering the wonders of experiential education.

3. Curriculum

Although every provider believes their program is the best, consider the quality of the curriculum. We are confident that the  innova t ive programs at our outdoor school will captivate your students in an entertaining and engaging learning experience! Our instructors have bachelor’s degrees and possess a variety of science and teaching credentials. A full-day schedule at Pali Institute consists of five 90-minute sessions with some double sessions (180 minutes) available for a more in-depth learning experience. Our courses adhere to California, Nevada and Arizona state standards.

4. Flexibility

At Pali Institute we offer a customized program to suit your school’s requirements, with curriculums available for 4th through 12th grades. Educators choose a three, four or five day program and build their experience by selecting from our 30+ class modules in three categories: Outdoor Education, Science and Leadership.

5 . Focus on the do and not the have

“Outdoor learning is more effective when adults focus on what children need to be able to do rather than what children need to have. An approach that considers experiences rather than equipment places children at the center of learning and ensures that individual children’s learning and developmental needs are taken account of and met effectively.”   Linda Tallent , and educational consultant who has worked extensively with schools to develop their outdoor spaces into learning environments, agrees. “Using the real world is the way learning has happened for 99.9% of human existence . Only in the last hundred years have we put it into a little box called a classroom.”.

6. What are your goals?

Outdoor education covers the three domains of self, others, and the natural world. The relative emphasis of these three domains can vary from one program to another, but at Pali we believe all programs should do all of the following:

  • Improve problem solving  skills
  • Enhance teamwork
  • Develop leadership  skills
  • Create an understand of natural environments

7 . Facilities

The upkeep and maintenance of the facility, its equipment and grounds play an important roll in safety and quality of experience.  In addition to 55 cabins and 187 toilettes, Pali has 11 full-time dedicated maintenance and 16 housekeeping staff and an 800 sq/ft centrally located infirmary.

8. Accommodations for Overnight Trips

Our comfortable mountain cabins feature solid wood built-in bunks, radiant floor heating, and private bathroom and shower facilities located inside the cabin. Each cabin is supervised by one of our qualified staff members. Visiting teachers stay in our semi-private accommodations with access to a teacher’s lounge complete with computers, Wi-Fi and satellite television.

9. Food Allergies & Dietary Needs

Pali has the newest, most state of the art 29,000 sq/ft dining hall and conference center with a kitchen and bakery that rival most restaurants.  In addition to being a nut-free campus, every meal includes gluten-free, vegetarian, and vegan options, and with prior notice we can accommodate any special dietary needs.

10. Timing & Approvals

A list of important guidelines would not e complete without mentioning the importance of timing and approvals.  Most school systems whether public or private require multiple signoffs for overnight trips and special programming.  Never underestimate the amount of time it takes to get these approvals.  Don’t be caught at the last minute.  Although Pali can accommodate over 700 people at a time, the prime schedule fills up very fast.  We recommend at least nine months of lead time, with late spring dates filling sooner! Not sure how to pitch Pali Institute to your principal or PTA?  Read our top tips for getting principal or PTA approval !

So, make your list, check it twice, and be sure to start planning well in advance of your visit.  Like the old adage “being prepared is more than half the battle.”  We look forward to seeing you at Pali!

Field Trips

Come experience our day immersion programs!

Groups will be provided a more in-depth academic version of one of the following:

Mine Immersion

A perfect rotation for California students which combines the basics of geology, mining, and the history of the Gold Rush. As the area that gives the most “take-aways”; students are able to crack open and keep their own geodes after learning the unique way they are created, polish and keep their own rocks in order to process a natural resource into a manmade one, learn the different characteristics of rocks in order to help identify them, and experience several different mining practices in a very real way. Our campus offers a fully functioning 1800 ft mine simulation, complete with mining helmets with lights, shovels and pickaxes, authentic mining sounds, and two digging areas. Students are fully immersed in what a real mine would sound and look like. They are also able to pan for gold in real sluice boxes while learning how miners were able to get land to mine and how they panned for it. Students then visit the Assay Office to learn how gold and other metals are tested for their purity and value. Students also focus on the positive and negative implications of mining upon our society and our environment and about improvements in the field that will affect both safety and sustainability.

Wacky Science Immersion

One of our most popular programs in which students learn the basics of chemistry and biology through fun hands-on experiments! Students engage concepts such as covalent bonds and how we create and break them, non-Newtonian liquids and how they bend the laws of physics, and how matter can go through fascinating processes such as sublimation and deposition. Students are also able to observe both implosions and explosions, as well as, learn about acidic-basic reactions to fully understand the differences between physical and chemical reactions. The students will be able to extract, isolate, and observe the DNA of different fruit/vegetable in minutes. Our trained instructors can juggle fire, create explosions, and teach about free radicals, convection, and thermal energy in a safe yet captivating way.

Ranch Immersion

At the Ranch, students will explore the relationship between humans and the environment in a small-scale agricultural setting. Orchard pests will be identified, and the role that insects play in helping us maintain a healthy and biologically diverse agroecosystem will be discovered! Students will take a close look at the importance of pollinators and explore the symbiotic relationship between humans and the European honey bee. We will also investigate the living compost system and discuss the role that decomposers play in the nitrogen cycle. Hypotheses will be formed regarding plant health, and testing for macronutrients and pH levels in the soil will be carried out. Students will learn about the role of photosynthesis in the cycling of matter and flow of energy into an out-of-living organism. Additionally, the distribution of water, resources on earth, and the water cycle will be discussed. Students will have the opportunity to explore the garden and orchard, harvesting, and juicing fruits and vegetables fresh from the earth. In the end, students learn the important lesson that if we take care of the earth, the earth will take care of us!

STEM Immersion

Our STEM program is going to bring life to science, technology, engineering, art, and math components. Students will be immersed in various STEM based activities that can include sessions that revolve around our earth system, structural integrity, and the human body.

We also host academic field trips at the Newport Sea Base! Please visit Journey to the Ocean for more information.

Our son completed science camp and could not be happier. He had a wonderful experience. What he learned in 3 short days far exceeded our expectations. Colleen M.

Field Trip Classes

Options for every age, talk with animals.

Come experience the wonders of the animal kingdom like you never have before! In this one-hour touch and talk students will get up close with 5-7 different species of animals and learn how perfectly designed they are to do what they do.

Decomposition

Through searching for evidence of decomposition and various decomposers, students gain an understanding of how decomposition contributes to the matter cycle and ecosystem.

River Critters

Students search the riverbank and use nets to collect river critters. Through their exploration, they discover how aquatic macro invertebrates are perfectly suited to survive in a river ecosystem, and how the presence of different species indicates the quality of the water. At the end of the session, the students get together and compare their findings (and their critters!) with their peers.

Tree Detectives

Students will experience the forest in a way they never have before. Using their senses, they are able to engage directly with nature and build a deeper understanding of the forest ecosystem. This class covers the process of photosynthesis and will teach students some tricks to engage with nature.

Nature Hike

Our guide will take you into the gorge on one of our beautiful trails and point out some of our unique flora & fauna.

Incredible Invertebrates

Insects, spiders, and snails, OH My! Students get into the field to collect live invertebrate specimens. By comparing and contrasting what they find, students learn the structure and function of these living creatures that make up the majority of life on the planet earth.

Fire-Building

Come learn how to start a campfire! In this hands-on class, students get to practice making campfires while learning the different elements of fire and how to safely use this amazing tool.

Outdoor Shelters

Students learn to construct a basic lean-to survival shelter with no man-made materials. This activity requires students to work as a team and think critically to finish their shelter in time.

20 Engaging and Educational Field Trip Ideas for Preschoolers

educational field trip ideas for preschoolers

Field trips are momentous times in a preschooler’s life. Preschool field trips allow children to enjoy a change of scenery and spend time outside the classroom doing more hands-on learning.

In addition to the memories children create on field trips, they’re a valuable opportunity for educators to reinforce lessons. With the right planning and preparation, field trips for children can be an engaging, educational day for all involved.

Why are preschool field trips important?

Field trips are more than extra-curricular activities. They can be an integral part of a child’s early education. Preschool field trips afford many substantial benefits for children:

Broadens their education

Children are exposed to only so much in a classroom setting. Field trips allow children to get a richer picture of educational subjects by observing them outside of books, lessons, or videos.

Exposure to real-life experiences

In preschool, children are developing their understanding of life and the world around them. Field trips expose them to everyday life in a setting where their teacher can help them connect what they’re learning to what happens in the real places in their community. Experiential learning (authentic, first-hand, sensory-based learning) through field trips is a way for children to reflect on and apply their new knowledge.

Research shows academic improvement

Studies support the idea that field trips have real effects on a child’s education. Field trips are linked to improvements in academic performance. According to a study on youth educational trips by the Wagner Group and the U.S. Travel Association, adults who took educational trips when they were younger…

  • Had better grades (59% of study respondents)
  • Graduated from high school at a higher rate (95% of study respondents)
  • Reported that educational trips had a positive impact on their education (89% of study respondents)

Expands their world

Field trips allow all children to experience more of the world. Whether they live in a busy city or a rural town, field trips introduce children to experiences and environments they may not have access to otherwise. Preschool teachers have the opportunity to make a child’s world a little larger with each field trip and show them new places, people, and adventures.

How to plan and prepare for preschool field trips

A lot of preparation goes into a successful field trip. For teachers and administrators, there are people, places, and schedules to coordinate weeks or months in advance.

Consider the below areas as you plan your trip:

Teaching moments

Sometimes preschool field trips are planned around a specific topic the class has been covering. Sometimes trips are simply a good learning opportunity that you’ll weave a lesson into. No matter which scenario you’re in as a teacher, it’s helpful to have your notes and activities prepared in advance.

How many adult chaperones will you need for the field trip? When you’re planning field trips for kids, it’s crucial to have a confirmed, appropriate number of chaperones based on the number of children attending.

You can request family volunteers or set up a rotating schedule so families can plan ahead. Consider offering incentives like free lunches or gift cards and remind them it’s a great opportunity to have a meaningful experience with their child and get to know the other children and families in your program.

Plan to bring extra snacks in case meal times run late. Prepare to answer questions from parents about whether to pack a lunch or work out an eating arrangement at the field trip location. If you'll be serving meals on the field trip, prepare the food before and determine how you will transport it. Consider packing a cooler for any perishable foods that need to be kept cold, and pack plenty of water if there is no water available at your destination.

Transportation

Some preschool policies require that school vehicles are used for field trips. Before the trip, determine transportation needs, such as how many vans or buses will be needed and if parents are permitted to drive.

If there’s a cost associated with the trip, how will you secure funds from the school or handle payments from parents? Use your communication platforms to alert parents of any expenses they’ll need to cover as far in advance as possible.

Sometimes drop-off and pick-up schedules can be impacted by field trips. Create an agenda and itinerary that shows where the class will be and breaks down how long you’ll be at each location. This helps parents plan their day and gives school administration information they would need in an emergency.

If any children have medication, medical equipment, or anything else that needs to be on hand for them, it needs to be accounted for in field trip planning. Bring any health and safety documents such as an accurate roster to count the children and emergency contact information. Teachers should also pack first aid kits and antibacterial hand wipes if there is no access to clean running water on your trip.

Families' participation on field trips is a great way to include them in the curriculum and share a day in the life of the class. Check out our calendar template to keep families up-to-date with all major school events and spark new ideas for family engagement year-round.

Field trip safety tips

Taking young children on a field trip can be an overwhelming experience without the right preparation. Field trips are very exciting, so be aware that the children may have extra energy or be more distracted. To have a fun, safe, and smooth trip, focus on safety measures before and during the excursion.

Before the field trip

  • Review the schedule with the children and tell them what to expect
  • Give children safety guidelines and procedures to follow
  • Assign pairs or small groups for headcount checks
  • Involve children in checking the field trip supply checklist
  • Instruct children to wear bright clothes or a certain color to make them easy to spot
  • Prepare and bring a first aid kit

  During the field trip

  • Do headcount checks frequently and always before leaving or entering any location
  • Follow pedestrian rules carefully when walking such as using sidewalks and crosswalks and only crossing the street when traffic signals say it is safe
  • For traveling by bus or van, check every seat before exiting
  • Ensure children understand and follow the security and safety measures of the field trip location
  • Continue practicing basic hygiene, such as washing hands or using hand wipes before eating
  • Keep a copy of emergency contact lists with you at all times
  • Take bathroom breaks together as a group

Field trip ideas for preschoolers

Choosing where to take the children in your preschool class is one of the most exciting parts of field trip planning. Here are 20 engaging and educational field trip ideas for preschoolers:

Apple orchards and pumpkin patches can show children how these foods are grown and offer a truly hands-on education as they pick their own.

Nature walk

Nature walks are an educational adventure that allow children to discover various plants, leaves, critters, and trees. It’s also great physical activity!

Farmer’s markets

A field trip to the local farmer’s market or grocery store can be an opportunity to teach children lessons about nutrition and where their food comes from.

Many children’s books are full of stories and illustrations of sea creatures, so the aquarium is sure to be a hit with preschoolers. They’ll get a chance to see these creatures up close and learn more about them.

A local bakery is another food-focused field trip that supports a small business and allows children to see how some of their favorite sweet treats are created.

Zoos are a common preschool class favorite! Children can visit and hear facts about a wide variety of animals, including birds, mammals, and reptiles.

Local library

Libraries are often a familiar place for young children, but a preschool field trip to the library gives children a chance to learn details about what a librarian does and the many types of books available to them.

Fire station

Preschoolers tend to love fire trucks. Use a field trip to a fire station to teach them about the work that happens behind the scenes and age-appropriate fire safety tips.

Local events

Sometimes the best educational events don’t need to be booked—they’re already happening in your community! From holiday celebrations and parades to the annual fair, local events can provide children with a wealth of learning opportunities.

Farmers have so much they can teach young children, from lessons about the way food is grown to how the animals are raised.

Children’s museum

Museums that cater specifically to young children are educational and interactive places that are ideal for preschool field trips. They also tend to change exhibits regularly, which means they’re a great choice for multiple trips.

Home improvement store

Show children how chairs, tables, and other items they use on a daily basis are built. Another way to do this is to find a local builder with a small shop who’s willing to give a workshop tour and demonstration.

If you have a child-friendly state park nearby, they make excellent field trip destinations. State parks are a beautiful place to teach about the great outdoors and ways to protect and respect our planet.

Recycling center

Teach children the importance of recycling and how everyday items like plastic water bottles and aluminum soda cans are recycled.

Local ponds are perfect for a low-cost, science and nature focused field trip. They’re often home to frogs, ducks, and aquatic plants, making great lesson topics for preschool children.

Around town scavenger hunt

Teach children about where they live with a scavenger hunt in your community. Downtown areas are usually ideal locations for this field trip activity.

Expose children to the performing arts with a preschool field trip to the local theater. This trip can teach them about storytelling on the stage, theater etiquette, and stage acting as a career.

Train station

Learning about different types of transportation expands children’s minds and view of the world. Add in a train ride to make it both engaging and educational!

Botanical garden

Botanical gardens are a stunning environment to teach children about the beauty of nature and various types of plant life.

Historic monuments

A field trip to an age-appropriate historic site can provide early lessons on important historical figures and events.

Post-field trip actions and education

Get the most out of your day away from the classroom by following up with children and their families after your field trip. Parents will appreciate knowing what their children learned and children will get a chance to relive the best moments of their trip.

To update families, consider including a brief summary of your field trip in your preschool newsletter . Ask children to share their favorite parts of the trip and include photos!

Plan a memorable outing

There are plenty of details to consider and plan when it comes to executing preschool field trips. Taking a trip is a great opportunity for educators to build upon everything their children are learning in the classroom and engage them in hands-on, memorable experiences.
