PaulMcCartney.com:  As part of the 50th Anniversary edition, an album of ‘underdubbed’  Band on the Run  mixes will be released. Can you explain what ‘underdubbed’ means? Where does that term come from? 

Paul:   Well, you always talk about the ‘overdubs’ when you’re making a song. When you put an extra guitar on over the top of what you’ve recorded, for example, that’s an overdub. So, we thought that these versions sounded like ‘underdubs’, as they are heard without those overdubs on top.   

PM.com:  You coined a new word, we love that – we’ll let the dictionary people know! Did you know when you wrote the song ‘Band on the Run’ that it would also end up becoming the album title?  

Paul:   I don’t think so, no. Those kinds of things – album titles and artwork – normally come later on in the process. I just wrote a bunch of songs, which luckily I remembered, because the demos got stolen! ‘Band on the Run’ was always going to be the big, epic track on the album, but I didn’t necessarily know it was going to be the title. But it eventually comes to the surface, and I thought, “Well, that’s an obvious title. That’s the one.”  

PM.com:  The title and cover are now so iconic, we can’t even imagine another title for that record! We’d love to talk to you about the arrangement of the overdubs. With the underdubbed version of ‘Jet’, for example, it features you blocking up the brass at the end. There are recordings of you doing this in The Beatles too. Is this because you have such a strong idea about what you want to go in that section when you start recording the song? 

Paul:   Yeah, I think so. When you write a song, it’s really just a bunch of ideas of how you think it should go. And then when you come to arrange the song, it’s the same process again. You want to give an idea to whoever’s collaborating on it later of what you want it to sound like.   

PM.com:  It’s funny to hear you say that because we’ve been listening to your  McCartney: A Life in Lyrics podcast and in the ‘Penny Lane’ episode you describe how that happened for the trumpet solo. 

Paul:   Well, because I don’t read or write music, I sing it out. On ‘Penny Lane’ we had this guy Dave Mason, who was one of one of the great trumpet players of his day, and I’d just discovered the piccolo trumpet which has a very high range. I just remember being at the session with David and George Martin, and I started singing the tune I’d made up. Then they wrote it down and David played it back very accurately. The only thing was, I’d sung something that was off the top of the range of his instrument! Dave looked at me slyly and said, “This is off the instrument’s range!” I said, “Yeah, but you can play it…?” And he did!  

PM.com: This next question is about ‘No Words’, which was co-written with Denny Laine. How did that process work in Wings? Was it writing it together from scratch, or finishing off a song draft like you did with John Lennon?   

Paul:   I only really have one process. If I’m writing with someone, we sit together and kick the ideas around, and Denny was good at that. We were ping-ponging, like I used to do with John. So yeah, that’s my method.  

PM.com:  That method definitely works well! Talking about collaborations, when  Band on the Run was recorded, Linda had been in the band for two years. You can hear a lot of an instrument called the Moog on this record, which you can see Linda playing in the video for ‘Helen Wheels’ and the film  One Hand Clapping . Was there a reason why this instrument was used in this era?  

Paul:   The Moog is a great instrument, and it was of the first synthesizers available. Originally when we used it in The Beatles it had just been invented by a guy called Robert Moog, so it was seen as the latest thing. I first used it all on ‘Maxwell’s Silver Hammer’ and it was very big, like computers in the old days were. Then they brought out a thing called a mini-Moog, which was much more manageable. And that is the instrument that we used in Wings, and that Linda enjoyed playing. It’s just got such a great sound, and because it was new at the time nobody had really used it, so we loved trying it out.

The Beatle is set to play Foro Sol on November 14th and 16th

Sir Paul McCartney has announced that, in addition to making stops in Australia and Brazil, his ongoing “Got Back” tour will be heading to Mexico. The former Beatle will play show at Mexico City’s Foro Sol stadium on November 14th and 16th, marking the first time he’ll play in the country in six years.

“I’m very excited to say I’m coming to Mexico to play some gigs with my ‘Got Back’ tour in November,” McCartney said in a statement. “I’ve got such great memories of Mexico. Every time we come we have a beautiful time. So, we’re going to make some more great memories. We’re going to rock, we’re going to roll. And we’re going to have a party. Fiesta!”

Update: McCartney has added a second show in Mexico City for November 16th.

What Are Paul McCartney’s Mexico City Shows?

Paul McCartney previously announced that he’ll be heading to Australia and Brazil for a new leg of the “Got Back” tour earlier this month. Now, he’s confirmed that the tour will stop in Mexico as well, marking the first shows that he’s played there since 2017.

The shows will take place on November 14th and 16th at Foro Sol, a stadium in Mexico City. The dates come just 10 days after the conclusion of the Australian leg of the tour, and about two weeks before Sir Paul is set to do his run through Brazil.

LAS VEGAS — The final curtain will come down this summer on Cirque du Soleil's long-running show “The Beatles Love," a cultural icon on the Las Vegas Strip that brought band members Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr back together for public appearances throughout its 18-year run.

Cirque announced on Tuesday that the show housed at the Mirage will end on July 7, part of the iconic hotel-casino's major renovation plan to rebrand itself into the Hard Rock Las Vegas.

Stéphane Lefebvre, CEO of the Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, said in a statement that more than 11.5 million people have seen the show — an energetic portrayal of the Fab Four's history and music with aerial stunts and whimsical dance numbers on a colorful, 360-degree stage.

“We are grateful to the creators, cast, crew and all involved in bringing this show to life," Lefebvre said, "and we know 'The Beatles LOVE' will live on long after the final bow.”

In a separate statement, Joe Lupo, president of the Mirage, thanked the Cirque performers and crew members working behind the scenes “who played a part in entertaining guests and bridged generations" for nearly two decades.

The production premiered in the summer of 2006, with red carpet appearances by both McCartney and Starr, as well as Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison, wife of the late Beatle George Harrison. They reunited a year later to celebrate the show's first anniversary.

According to Cirque, the show was born out of the friendship between its founder Guy Laliberté and Harrison, the Beatles' lead guitarist who died in 2001. John Lennon was killed in 1980.

The show is set to a specialized soundtrack that earned Cirque two Grammy Awards in 2008, a first for the entertainment company. Cirque said the Beatles’ original producer, George Martin, and his son produced and mixed the 26-song soundscape, pulling from 130 songs from the Beatles’ powerhouse music catalog and archives.

The current cast includes 11 original members from the show's inception, according to Cirque. More than 11,000 costume pieces are worn on show night, including 250 pairs of shoes and 225 wigs. Audiences throughout the show’s run, Cirque said, have been showered with 13.5 tons of confetti during the final act, which closes with the Beatles' 1967 hit “All You Need is Love.”

“Beatles Love” is one of six Cirque productions on the Las Vegas Strip. Tickets for the final shows in July will go on sale in the coming weeks.

It might be time to refer to the Beatles as the Bey-tles from here on out! On Thursday (April 4), Sir Paul McCartney took to his Instagram page to share a lengthy message lauding Beyoncé ‘s cover of The Fab Four’s “Blackbird,” which appears on her brand new Cowboy Carter album.

McCartney spoke about the civil rights bent he alluded in  Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now , a 1997 Barry Miles-penned biography of the Beatles. In the book, McCartney explains that “I had in mind a [Black] woman, rather than a bird. Those were the days of the civil rights movement, which all of us cared passionately about, so this was really a song from me to a [Black] woman, experiencing these problems in the States: ‘Let me encourage you to keep trying, to keep your faith; there is hope.'”

McCartney — whose original master recording is used in Beyoncé’s version, according to Variety — also revealed that he had the chance to speak with the pop icon about her take on “Blackbird.”

“Blackbiird,” the second track on Bey’s already-record-breaking Cowboy Carter , is one of two covers on the LP. Elsewhere on the sprawling 27-tack album, Beyoncé takes on Dolly Parton’s seminal “Jolene,” rewriting the song to be a more seamless fit for a “Creole banjee b–ch from Lousianne.”

In 2022, with Renaissance lead single “Break My Soul” entering the Billboard Hot 100 ‘s top 10 for the first time, Beyoncé became the first woman in Billboard history to ever tally at least 20 top 10 hits as soloist and 10 or more top 10s as a member of a group. The only other two artists to accomplish such a feat? None other than Michael Jackson and McCartney.

The Beatles’ original version of “Blackbird” appeared on their eponymous 1968 LP — commonly referred to as The White Album — which spent nine weeks atop the Billboard 200 . Recently, Emmy-winning documentarian Ken Burns compared Cowboy Carter to The White Album , citing both records’ extensive exploration of different musical genres.
