PDC Darts: All the dates as Pro Tour, European Tour and Premier League return
Watch the World Matchplay on Sky Sports; coverage gets underway on Saturday, July 18
Comment & Analysis @paulprenders
Wednesday 1 July 2020 17:57, UK
Darts behind closed doors, players marking matches, and the hope of bringing crowds back to watch the biggest names in the PDC - with competitive darts poised to return, we take a look at the state of play.
After an epic six weeks of darting from home with the innovative PDC Home Tour, and a host of online tournaments, a five-day Summer Series will be followed by the World Matchplay - the year's second-biggest tournament - and, as things stand the Premier League, all by the end of July.
Questions still surround the Matchplay, with a decision on where and how the event might look expected by the end of the week.
The PDC are considering two options: a behind-closed-doors tournament at Milton Keynes' Marshall Arena - which remains the most likely - but also a scenario that would see the event in its regular home, Blackpool's Winter Gardens.
PDC Calendar - July schedule
In preparation for that event, and following the suspension of all Pro Tour and European Tour action after Premier League Night Six in Liverpool in March, the Summer Series will kick off the sport's return to action for what looks set to be a busy second half of the year.

Summer Series
With the sport halted, so has the Order of Merit - meaning qualification for the premier ranking events has been impossible. To reignite the competitive edge, and give as many of the Tour Card holders as possible the chance to return to play, the PDC announced the Summer Series in June.
Summer Series to signal darts return
Follow us @SkySportsDarts
With the announcement that prize money - which would have lapsed between March 16 and July 8 - has been removed, the field for the Matchplay will be confirmed at the conclusion of the Summer Series.
The five days of competition will take place behind closed doors and will involve losing players calling the next match on their allocated board. The two 'live' streaming boards will have a referee for their match.
Each day will have standard Players Championship prize money of £75,000, and all prize money counts towards the re-calibrated Order of Merit
Additionally, a place at November's Grand Slam of Darts is up for grabs for the player who tops the five-day Order of Merit for prize money accumulated and has not already qualified for the tournament later this year.
Five days of Players Championship events will get underway in Milton Keynes on Wednesday, July 8 through to Sunday, July 12, and the five days will represent the final qualification events for the World Matchplay.
- 5am finishes, bauble the dog and a dinner plate for the champion
World Matchplay
Blackpool's iconic Winter Gardens and the sunshine of summer is synonymous with the sport's second-biggest event, and the news that the tournament will go ahead on the scheduled dates was welcomed.
The draw will take place on July 12, and the quest for the Phil Taylor Trophy will then begin on July 18 and run through to a conclusion on July 26. Sky Sports will be there for every arrow thrown.
However, for the first time in its history, the prestigious event will not be held in Blackpool, but will go behind closed doors at Milton Keynes' Marshall Arena.
Matchroom Sport have already seen successful hosting of the Championship League and the Tour Championship in snooker, and with an adjoining hotel, the Marshall Arena is set up to provide the most suitable alternative to the Winter Gardens.
The top-16 players from the Order of Merit will qualify automatically, and they will be joined by the top-16 players from a one-year Pro Tour Order of Merit.
Premier League
As it stands, Birmingham on Thursday, July 30, will see the resumption of the Premier League, halted in Liverpool after Night Six.
The 17-night roadshow is perhaps the most difficult tournament to get up and running, with nights still scheduled for Northern Ireland, Holland, Germany, Scotland, and England.
With guidance differing from country to country, it remains to be seen whether it is possible to stick to the rescheduled plan that was released in June. That includes a double-header in Rotterdam, Judgement Night now at The O2, a trip to the Mercedes Benz Arena in Berlin, and the Play-Offs scheduled for Sheffield in October.
Premier League Darts 2020 - Revised schedule
European tour.
Behind the cancelled World Series, the burgeoning European Tour has perhaps been the hardest hit, with the calendar now reduced to just four additional events from an initial 13. Gerwyn Price was the Belgian Darts Champion, beating Michael Smith in February.
Four remaining events will now take place in Gibraltar, Germany, Czech Republic, and for the first time in PDC history, Hungary.
The 32-player European Championship remains in place, with the qualifying criteria an Order of Merit based on five events rather than 13. The event is due to take place in Westfalenhalle in Dortmund, from October 29 to November 1.
PDC European Tour
Rest of the year.
The caveat remains that all action is subject to change, as guidance to deal with the threat of Covid-19 changes, but the rest of the darting year is yet to be altered.
PDC chief executive Matt Porter told The Darts Show podcast that Players Championship events could be shoehorned into midweeks with players reliant on them for income, and once the Matchplay and Summer Series have played out, further announcements are likely.
The field for the Nordic Darts Masters, the sole remaining event of the World Series, will be made up of eight PDC players and eight local players, while the World Cup will now take place over three days in Graz in November rather than four in Hamburg.
PDC Calender: August-December
An announcement on the field for the World Series Finals is expected in the coming weeks while the World Grand Prix, the Grand Slam of Darts, and Players Championship Finals remain as scheduled and with qualifying criteria likely to mirror that of the Matchplay.
Finally, the World Championship, scheduled for December at Alexandra Palace, remains untouched - the hope being that by then, crowds may be allowed for sporting events and fans will be allowed to gather at the year's biggest Christmas party.
Darts returns to Sky Sports in July, with nine days of coverage from the World Matchplay getting underway on Saturday, July 18, and every day until the final on Sunday, July 26.

The Pro Tour
The PDC Pro Tour is the bread and butter of any player in the PDC. Floor tournaments played behind closed doors that the ranking are build from.
The PDC Pro Tour is a series of darts tournaments organised annually by the PDC. The Pro Tour events are unique in that they are non-televised events and they comprise Professional Dart Players Association (PDPA) Players Championships, UK Open qualifiers and European Tour events.
The PDC began operating a Tour Card system in 2011, with there being a total of 128 players awarded Tour Cards every year. These allow players to participate in all Players Championship and UK Open qualifiers. There has been a particular increase of Players Championship events over recent years, all of which see players aim to qualify for the Players Championship Finals. These events are known within the sport as floor tournaments, with multiple boards featuring games taking place at one time.
As of today, the PDC awards players Tour Cards through the following requirements:
- Top 64 players from the PDC Order of Merit after the World Championship (having competed in at least ten events)
- Tour Card holders from previous year’s Qualifying School
- Four tour card holders from previous year’s invitations (PDC Challenge Tour & PDC Development Tour)
- Two highest qualifiers from the PDC Challenge Tour, a series of tournaments for non-Tour Card holders
- Two highest qualifiers from the PDC Development Tour, a series of tournaments for youth players
- At least 16 qualifiers from a four-day Qualifying School (more places will be awarded via this method if not all the above spaces are filled)
PDPA (Professional Dart Players Association) players can only enter Pro Tour tournaments through the PDC’s online entry system. Those who are not a PDPA player must submit their entries through the local event organiser.
UK Players Championship events feature a 128-player draw, but those events which feature fewer than 128 entries will see byes awarded to players via their seeding. Seedings for these events are decided by the one-year rolling Players Championship Order of Merit, which is determined by the prize money won in Players Championships events over the 12 months before that event. Tour Card holders must pay a £100 entry fee to all Players Championship events.
Prize money won by players in the Pro Tour also contributes directly to their overall ranking in the PDC Order of Merit, which decides seedings in a number of PDC ranking tournaments . Players can also earn automatic qualifying places in major tournaments such as the World Championship, World Matchplay and World Grand Prix through their prize money earned. As such, players performances in events on the Pro Tour can have a direct correlation on their success in the televised ranking events.
Players win the following amount of prize money for their success in Pro Tour events:
- Winner – £10,000
- Runner-Up – £6,000
- Semi-Finals – £3,000
- Quarter-Finals – £2,250
- Last 16 – £1,500
- Last 32 – £1,000
- Last 64 – £500
In the history of PDC Pro Tour events, no player has won more titles than Michael van Gerwen, who has 75 to his name. He sits just above Phil Taylor in the list of Pro Tour victories, who won 70 Pro Tour tournaments during his esteemed career, while Gary Anderson sits in third place with 30 victories.

Stats Analysis: New names & returning faces to star on 2024 PDC ProTour
With PDC Qualifying Schools now complete and the 128 PDC Tour Card holders confirmed for 2024, stats supremo Richard Ashdown looks at the latest names set to star on the professional circuit over the next 12 months...
Since the Professional Darts Corporation adopted the Tour Card system in 2011, 420 different names have featured as part of the 128 elite. As we enter the 14th season of PDC ProTour darts, 23 players join the professionals ranks for the very first time.
First-time Tour Cards
Luke Littler’s meteoric rise into the world’s top 32 after his stunning World Championship campaign saw the teenager earn his Tour Card by right, through the PDC Order of Merit.
Having already secured second position on the 2023 Development Tour, this opened the door for third-placed Wessel Nijman to join him, along with Owen Bates, who enjoyed a late flourish in 2023 to finish in second place on the Challenge Tour.
A dramatic week of Q School action in Milton Keynes and Kalkar saw 20 more new names gaining PDC Tour Cards.
Newly crowned WDF champion Andy Baetens headlines the list, winning outright on day three to become the third player (after Stephen Bunting and Glen Durrant) switch to the PDC ranks as the reigning Lakeside champion.
The Belgian is joined by Chris Landman, the man he defeated in the final to win the WDF title in December.
There are five new Dutch Tour Card holders following Q School progress for Landman, Patrick Geeraerts, Jitse van der Wal and day one winner Martijn Dragt (plus Nijman via the Development Tour), taking the total of Dutch representatives to a record 24 players (surpassing 22 in 2023).
Germany has a total of nine PDC Tour Card holders in 2024 (surpassing their previous best total of 7 in 2021) with Paul Krohne, Lukas Wenig and Tim Wolters celebrating success at Q School for the first time.
Flying the flag for their respective nations at Qualifying School were Benjamin Reus, who became Denmark’s third ever Tour Card Holder (after Per Laursen and Vladimir Andersen) and 2022 Lakeside finalist Thibault Tricole, who joins his French World Cup of Darts partner Jacques Labre on the PDC circuit.
Two of the proudest players making PDC history were Italy’s Michele Turetta and New Zealand’s Haupai Puha, who each became the first player from their nation to earn a coveted Tour Card.
Puha was one of seven of the WDF’s top 10 ranked players to have won a PDC Tour Card, along with England’s James Hurrell and USA’s Danny Lauby.
Former Lakeside Youth Champions Joshua Richardson and Leighton Bennett will also compete as PDC professionals in 2024-2025, alongside fellow English prospects Robert Grundy and Dom Taylor (who like Bennett, both won their cards outright), plus Scotland’s Darren Beveridge and Wales’ Rhys Griffin.
Cards Retained and Regained
Northern Ireland’s Nathan Rafferty returns for a third consecutive year via his ranking on the Development Tour (with table topper Gian van Veen finishing inside the top 64 in the main PDC Order of Merit).
Having missed out in 2023, Berry van Peer had already ensured his card in 2024-2025 by topping the Challenge Tour rankings.
Following a two-year absence, former Alexandra Palace semi-finalist Jelle Klaasen sealed his return to the PDC with an outright win on Day Two.
Two more Dutch-born players also regained their place through Q School, with USA’s Jules van Dongen making an immediate return to the tour (joining fellow American, Lauby) and Jeffrey de Graaf, who won on the final day to bridge a five-year absence and become the fourth player to represent Sweden (after Par Riihonen, Magnus Caris and Daniel Larsson).
Joining van Dongen in holding a 2022-2023 Tour Card, losing it, and then winning it straight back in 2024 were England’s George Killington, Belgium’s Mario Vandenbogaerde and Poland’s Radek Szaganski.
Meanwhile, Ireland’s former World Cup runner-up Steve Lennon emphatically won through UK Q School on Day One to secure an eighth successive year on the ProTour.
For the second time in their careers, there were Q School successes for William Borland, Brett Claydon and for Adam Hunt (by the narrowest of margins on legs difference), each returning to the tour after a one-year absence.
However, the longest awaited return was for Matthew Dennant, who came through Q School for a second time, after six years away from the professional tour.
Nations and Numbers
A total of 23 different nations will be represented on the PDC ProTour in 2024.
England (45), Netherlands (24), Germany (9), Belgium (7), Wales (7), Scotland (6), Northern Ireland (5), Republic of Ireland (4), Australia (2), Austria (2), Czech Republic (2), France (2), Poland (2) and USA (2).
Nine nations have sole representatives, with Matt Campbell (Canada), Boris Krcmar (Croatia), Madars Razma (Latvia), Christian Perez (Philippines) & José de Sousa (Portugal) alongside the new Tour Card holders from Denmark, Italy, New Zealand and Sweden.
With a high level of performance across PDC ranking events in 2022-2023, Campbell secured his place inside the top 64 to continue his professional status for third consecutive year, as did Kevin Doets, Cameron Menzies, Ricardo Pietreczko, Josh Rock, Rowby-John Rodriguez and Jim Williams.
Having won a Tour Card at Q School for a third time in 2022 and finishing inside the PDC’s top 64, Mickey Mansell maintains his record as an ever-present on the PDC tour for 14 years.
He is one of 17 players to have held a Tour Card every year since the system’s inception in 2011. Dave Chisnall and William O’Connor have also come through Q School and maintained 14 years in a row on tour.
14 players have held Tour Cards through their PDC ranking status since 2011 and have never had to compete at Q School - Gary Anderson, Steve Beaton, Joe Cullen, Brendan Dolan, Michael van Gerwen, Mervyn King, Adrian Lewis, Michael Smith, Mensur Suljovic, Vincent van der Voort, James Wade, Ian White, Simon Whitlock and Peter Wright.
Raymond van Barneveld only missed out during his 'retirement' year in 2020, with Keegan Brown, Kim Huybrechts and Ross Smith each holding Tour Cards since 2012. Ricky Evans and Daryl Gurney have been PDC players since 2013.
Tour Cards No More
A total of 30 players have now lost their Tour Cards from 2023, with Darren Webster just missing out for the first time in 12 years, having narrowly failed to qualify through Qualifying School.
James Wilson drops off the tour after nine years in the PDC, along with South Africa’s Devon Petersen who is also without a Tour Card for the first time since 2014.
Having succeeded four times previously, Joe Murnan failed to get through Q School and misses out on a card for only the second season in 13 years.
Former Lakeside champions Richie Burnett and Scott Waites failed to keep their place in the PDC’s 128, along with former World Youth champions Ted Evetts and Bradley Brooks, plus Corey Cadby who had been inactive on the tour since winning his place 12 months ago.
Lithuania’s sole representative on the tour since 2019, Darius Labanauskas also misses out. And with Jose Justicia and Tony Martinez among the 30 players losing their cards, 2024 will be the first year without a Spanish player on the ProTour.
Players losing their PDC Tour Card: Vladimir Andersen, Bradley Brooks, Kevin Burness, Richie Burnett, Corey Cadby, Jamie Clark, Ted Evetts, Nick Fullwell, Jimmy Hendriks, Danny Jansen, Jose Justicia, Krzysztof Kciuk, Martijn Kleermaker, Darius Labanauskas, Tony Martinez, Damian Mol, Ross Montgomery, Joe Murnan, John O’Shea, Luc Peters, Devon Petersen, Brian Raman, Rusty-Jake Rodriguez, Connor Scutt, Jeff Smith, Scott Waites, Darren Webster, Shaun Wilkinson, Lewy Williams, James Wilson.
