But as is true with most things, the journey toward the best golf pants is the simplest of them all. You cannot go wrong rolling up to the bag drop in a pair of classic tapered chinos . Brands like Ralph Lauren , Bonobos, Dockers, and Todd Snyder all make trousers suited for fairways and greens and even have golf-specific styles themselves. Throw bona fide golf brands like Nike and Adidas into the mix, and add some exciting newcomers like Students Golf and Manors, and you've got yourself one hell of a crop to pick from.

Speaking of crops, you may be saying to yourself, "I play golf in the summer , when it is mostly hot, and therefore am not a foolish person who'd wear pants to play a sport outdoors for five hours." And to you we say—touché, go for a pair of shorts . But to be honest, in our humble opinion, the most classic look on the links starts with a well-fitting pair of pants.

The lightest pants on the list, these aren't technically made for golf. But they are the best pants on the list for a warm-weather round, especially if you're walking.

Lululemon knows its way around a pant—and this straight-leg number has a wider silhouette than you're used to from the activewear behemoth.

Adidas's core multipurpose pants in a performance fabric tailor-made for golf's movements.

Malbon Golf's team-up with Dockers was probably its best collaboration to date, and these Original Chinos are its flagship garment.

If you're gonna sport plaid pants, subtlety is key. Leave it to Todd Snyder and Footjoy to create exactly what we're talking about.

An iconic brand, a classic silhouette, and some classy pleats. Everything a golf pant should have, TBH.

For when you feel like wearing sweats but you don't wanna dress down, turn to Malbon. These joggers manage to stay cool, with belt loops, an embroidered logo, and plenty of pockets.

Bonobos has widened its golf-pant offerings with this seersucker change-up worth a look. These are easy and breezy, whether you're on or off the green.

Steal a cue from Keith Mitchell, one of the best-dressed players on the PGA Tour, who wears Sid Mashburns.

If you're looking for the pocket structure of your favorite jeans but can't wear denim where you're playing, grab these in dark blue or black and you'll only feel the difference.

Nike Dri-FIT Victory Slim-Fit Golf Pants

Dri-FIT Victory Slim-Fit Golf Pants

As straightforward and classic as it gets—a goes-with-anything, performance-forward golf pant from the brand that outfits the G.O.A.T.

Drake's Navy Cotton Canvas Games Trousers

Navy Cotton Canvas Games Trousers

You'd be hard-pressed to find a Drake's garment we wouldn't recommend or find any excuse to slide into. If you feel the same, buy these trousers and play golf in them. Voilà, they are golf pants.

Manors Lightweight Course Trousers

Lightweight Course Trousers

Not only would you be flexing a more progressive silhouette out there, you'd be flexing one of the best golf brands to emerge over the past half decade, Manors golf. Bonus points for resistance.

Lululemon ABC Pant Classic Warpstreme Pants

ABC Pant Classic Warpstreme Pants

Lulu's ABC Pants are perfect for golf. They've got just enough of all the performance elements you're looking for, but they're cut for modern wear so you can pair them well with almost anything.

VRST Limitless Athletic Fit Pants

Limitless Athletic Fit Pants

Dick's' in-house brand VRST offers a straight-leg option that has all the performance of your go-to golf pants without being so dang tight.

What to Consider

shape, rectangle

Choose your golf pants wisely. When you're selecting from our 15 favorite pairs above, take into consideration a few things, primarily fit and fabric.

Some people prefer a more relaxed, jogger-like style for the green, and some like to keep things slim. Both are great options that give totally different vibes, so make sure you take into account the fit of the pants before buying. The fabric will also go a long way in determining how much wear you get out of your pants. Summer is approaching, and seersucker is probably going to be a healthier choice for the season than wool.

Why You Can Trust Esquire

shape, rectangle

We're not going to say something is great unless it's actually great. Every product in Esquire's roundups is carefully curated by our fashion and e-commerce teams.

When it comes to golf pants, you can rest assured that we're hand-selecting styles that we've personally tested, tried, and loved, along with styles that the rest of our stylish colleagues here at Esquire endorse for their own wear. We've had to go through a lot of trial and error, and these golf pants are the ones that are simply the best.

Every pick on this list (and our other lists!) comes from years of wearing different things, seeing what we love and what we don't, and going from there. No two tastes are the same, and no two men are the same. Your proverbial mileage may vary. But if you're looking for the right place to start, with advice from folks who care (possibly too much!) about this sort of stuff, this is the place to be.

No Jeans Allowed: The Golfer’s Dress Code

My motto is that you have to look good to play good.

If you need proof of this, just look at the 82-time champion Tiger Woods. The guy never looks bad and has the best winning percentages in the history of the game.

Coincidence? Maybe, but looking good brings more confidence.

Confidence can ultimately help you play better golf. Don’t get me wrong, looking good isn’t everything but it sure can help. And if you do play bad, at least you look good doing it.

One thing about golf that frustrates newcomers is the dress code. While the governing bodies of the game have loosened up from strict dress codes, they still want players to have a professional appearance. Not to mention, many golf courses have strict rules of what to wear and what not to wear.

But not all golf courses are the same and continue to evolve as the sport becomes more popular. Keep reading to learn about golf dress codes when you’re playing golf.

Golf Dress Code – Everything You Need to Know

Before you get dressed and head to the course, it’s a good idea to check the dress code ahead of time. Every golf club has a dress code of some sort and there’s nothing worse than showing up with the wrong attire.

We’ll help you find the right attire for your next round so you look good and blend in with the crowd. But before doing so, let’s dive into golfers attire and the history behind it since it doesn’t really exist with most other spots.

Golfers Dress Code

History of Golf Attire

I’m pretty sure some of the old time golfers would be rolling in their graves right now if they saw how golfers dress on the course. If you see any old footage of golf in the early 1900s, the attire was vastly different from today. No loudmouth pants, hoodies, or mock collars. If you wore those items, you wouldn’t have even made it to the first tee.

In the past, players would wear trousers, button down shirts, ties, and a different type of hat. But as you can imagine, the attire has loosened up over the years and is much less formal. As the game continues to expand its global footprint and  attract new golfers, the days of a collared button down shirt with a tie are long gone.

Golf Course Dress Code for PGA & LPGA Players

Now that you know a little bit about how much times have changed with fashion on the course, let’s talk about what the pros wear. The good news is that you don’t have to dress like a PGA or LPGA Tour player at most local golf clubs.

PGA Tour players are pretty standard and are required to wear pants and a collared shirt. A hat is optional, but almost everyone wears one and they usually add a vest, jacket, or sweater in colder climates.

In the last few years, they’ve added a provision that allows them to wear shorts too, but only in practice rounds. Since they tend to play in the best weather throughout the year, this is a nice benefit for the guys because it’s very hot and muggy in some areas. But they still can’t wear shorts in formal rounds that take place Thursday-Sunday.

The LPGA Tour has very different rules for their competitors.

Professional women golfers often wear pants, skirts, or golf shorts. But they are not allowed to wear leggings, racer back tops, and short skirts. They may wear designer caps or visors to protect them from the sun as well.

Proper Golf Attire For Male Golfers

So what do male golfers wear on the golf course?

Being the gender who doesn’t care about style nearly as much as the other, it’s pretty simple for guys. Men wear a collared shirt and pants or shorts. But some clubs don’t even require collared shirts anymore and it really depends on where you’re playing.

In general though, you can’t go wrong with a polo shirt and golf shorts or pants. Most courses will allow you to tee it up any day of the week.

Some golf courses do require long pants, but that is usually only at fancy, more exclusive private clubs. Needless to say, if a buddy invites you out to his private course, make sure to double-check with him on dress code beforehand.

Collared shirts have somewhat progressed and include a traditional polo, mock collar, and a casual collar. You should also tuck your shirt in and have a belt as well to complete the outfit.

It’s also a good idea to wear golf shoes with or without spikes as well. Regular tennis shoes are not recommended and sometimes not allowed at the facility.

You can wear golf socks or regular ankle length socks. In general, you want to avoid high socks if you’re wearing golf shorts as it doesn’t look great. But I strongly recommend that you always wear socks to avoid a blister as well.

Finally, don’t forget about golf hats either. Men typically wear baseball caps, straw hats, or bucket hats that match the rest of their golf outfit.  Most clubs allow you to wear them into the restaurant too, but some have a strict rule about no hats in the dining rooms (usually old-school, fancy golf courses).

Depending on the weather, you might have turtleneck tops, a wind shirt, sweater, and other gear to stay warm. Vests over a polo shirt are also acceptable and a favorite with players in the early spring when it’s brisk in the mornings.

Golf Dress Code – What Not to Wear

So what should men generally not wear on the golf course? Many golf clubs do not allow:

  • Tee shirts.
  • Cut off shirts.
  • Rugby shirts.
  • Cut off jeans.
  • Cowboy hats.
  • Denim jackets.
  • Running shoes.
  • Basketball shorts.
  • Shoes with metal spikes.
  • Large, bulky cargo shorts.
  • Tank tops or sleeveless shirts.
  • Blue jeans but depends on the golf course.

Avoiding this apparel should help you look good on any golf course.

Women's Golf Dress Code

Proper Golf Attire For Lady Golfers

So what do female golfers wear?

The golf dress code for ladies differs greatly from what is acceptable for men to wear on the links. Women golfers tend to wear polos as well but may or may not have sleeves.

They usually wear blouses, pants, capris, skorts, or shorts. Some courses do require shorts or golf skirts (skorts) to be a specific length as well so it’s always a good idea to check ahead of time.

Seriously, one time I was playing when a member complained about someone and the head pro came out to measure her shorts. It was awkward and uncomfortable, but hopefully that’s in the past.

Women now wear a lot of athletic wear as well including yoga pants and sportswear as tops. Polos are not always required for women and also depends on the course as well.

So what should women generally avoid wearing on the golf course?

  • Flip-flops.
  • Sun dresses.
  • Street shoes.
  • Short shorts/skorts.
  • Super tight-fitting clothing
  • Shirts that reveal the midsection.

Remember, each course dress code is different so it’s always good to look on their website or call ahead.

Go here for a much more comprehensive discussion no what women should wear to golf .

FAQs About Golf Attire for Men and Women

Do you have more questions about what to wear (and not wear) on the golf course?

If so, we have answers for you in the frequently asked questions section below.

Do all golf courses have dress codes?

Most golf courses do have dress codes.  Some are much more formal than other golf clubs and really depend on the type of golf course.

For example, private golf courses that are members only, tend to have very different rules vs. a public golf course. A private golf club won’t allow blue jeans and might require shorts or skirts as specific lengths.

But for public golf courses, they might allow jeans and have no requirement for skirts or shorts. If it’s a really relaxed club, they might not even have a dress code at all and allow pretty much anything.

It’s always important to check with the golf club ahead of time. That way you don’t have an awkward first encounter with the course and possibly have to buy new attire from them. Not only is it a tough start to the day, apparel at nicer courses are marked up a ton!

Does a mock collar count as a collared shirt?

In the past few years I’ve noticed that mock collared shirts are making a comeback (just in time for Tiger Woods). Mock collared shirts do count as a collared shirt, despite not having a collar, and caused a stir when Tiger wore his in the early 2000s.

The iconic red mock collar shirt helped him win some big championships, but there were plenty of skeptics when he first wore it. Now, guys like Brooks Koepka and others are bringing this fashion sense back on the golf course.

Do you have to wear golf shoes?

At many clubs, it’s required to wear golf shoes instead of everyday casual or athletic shoes. Not only does it look more professional, it also makes the game so much easier.

Shoes that were designed for the game make it easier to swing by allowing your lower body to stay still. Whether you have spikes or spikeless shoes, they still get much more traction than normal shoes. This allows you to swing faster and with more confidence because you know you won’t slip out during your swing.

Not to mention, there are tons of options available. To help you navigate the shoe world, make sure to check out our guide here .

Are hoodies allowed on the golf course?

This is a good question because hoodies are officially on the Tour at this point. Players like Rory McIlroy, Justin Thomas, and others are wearing them during official tournaments. But just because they are wearing them doesn’t mean everyone is a fan.

A lot of people including the media and old school golfers don’t like seeing them on the tour. A lot of them still live in the old days when that type of attire was frowned upon. But if the guys on the PGA Tour are wearing them and companies like Nike are making them, why not rock them?

The only thing with hoodies for me is to make sure it doesn’t affect your swing. That’s why it’s important to buy golf specific hoodies as they are thinner and made for golf. Other hoodies are heavier and might get in the way during your swing.

What should I wear to the driving range?

It depends on the driving range. If it’s an establishment that is just a driving range and not a golf course, the dress code is usually much more casual. You might even be able to wear a t- shirt on sunny days but it just depends on the dress regulations.

If you go to a course, I would suggest wearing normal golf attire with soft spikes on your shoes.

Final Thoughts on Golfer’s Attire

While golf fashion isn’t what it once was on the links, the sport still does require specific golf clothing. The founders of the game still want players to have a professional image and maintain the integrity of the game.

For men, stick with full sleeve shirts, knee-length shorts or athletic pants, and golf shoes are perfectly acceptable. For women, a polo style shirt (with or without collar), golf dresses or pants or shorts, and you’ll be good.

At most courses, men and women should avoid t-shirts, athletic shoes, tank tops and in general, not wear jeans. If you aren’t sure, always make sure to check out the website or call ahead to avoid any awkward situations in the clubhouse.

Xander Schauffele plays an iron shot

Xander Schauffele is one of the world's top players and he's looking different in 2024 with some new golf apparel.

The Olympic gold medallist and seven-time PGA Tour winner signed with Descente this year, having been an adidas player for his entire professional career. He signed a multi-year contract with the Japanese company to wear its golf and training wear as well as accessories.

The company started out in baseball and skiing but branched out to golf in 2015.

Its range was originally available in Japan, Korea and the UK. It is now available to buy in the US.

Schauffele is still sponsored by adidas according to his official website but only to wear the brand's footwear.

“I am very honored to join the Descente team," Schauffele said when he joined in January.

Schauffele became Descente's third golf ambassador

"The Descente brand has a rich history of developing performance and training apparel for a variety of indoor and outdoor sports, including golf. I am very grateful for the opportunities to work closely with such a storied brand and look forward to contributing to the success of Team Descente on and off the golf course.”

Those high-tech belt accessories at the Hero? Here’s what they’re for

  • Follow on Twitter

Rickie Fowler at the Hero World Challenge on Friday.

They look like clunky beepers from a bygone era, but, in fact, those devices attached to the back of players’ belts at the Hero World Challenge this week are packed with new-age technology.

Rickie Fowler was wearing one Friday. Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth , too.

In a few words, they’re GPS trackers. In a few more words, they’re what the PGA Tour hopes will be a key tool in its efforts to expand and improve its ShotLink system, a sprawling network that collects and disseminates players’ scoring and statistical data in real-time.

At most Tour events, ShotLink is powered by a small army of volunteers who gather data from sensors — a combination of radar, cameras and/or lasers — that capture the path and movement of every shot. Distance, flight apex, proximity to the hole: you name it, ShotLink tracks it, beaming the intel almost instantaneously to golf fans, bettors and stats nerds all over the world.

Trouble is, the technology is cumbersome and expensive, meaning it’s not available at all events. Overseas tournaments, for example, aren’t wired for ShotLink. Nor are all the courses at events with multiple host sites (i.e., the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am). The more portable tracking devices — with which ShotLink administrators already have been experimenting on the Korn Ferry and Champions tours — could solve for these challenges. And wouldn’t it be wonderful to also see the tech in use on the LPGA Tour?

“The few pros I asked about it on Wednesday seemed intrigued by the idea and not overly bothered by the clip-on device,” my colleague, Dylan Dethier, reported earlier this week . “But the Tour will undergo more testing before putting the tech into play for tournament rounds.”

The PGA Tour did not immediately respond to a query about the goal of this week’s experiment. But the devices — or “bugs,” as the ShotLink staff calls them — did make a cameo on the Golf Channel broadcast Friday, with roving reporter John Wood noting: “They’ve been in R&D for a couple of years. They take a reading of the players’ location every three seconds, plot it on a graph and then when they get to their ball — once they hit — the walking scorer will hit a button and that gives them their yardage.”

Among endless other data points.

Nifty stuff.

Jason Day draws more attention with another unique Malbon look

Change Text Size

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Jason Day has three top 10s this season and is contention halfway through this week’s Wells Fargo Championship, but his play has not been the focus this year. It has been his wardrobe.

Day became Malbon Golf’s first ambassador this year, and while terms of the deal were not released, it seems that the streetwear company is getting its money's worth. Day’s polarizing outfits have been a source of constant publicity. Many are reminiscent of the baggy fits and cotton fabrics that were popular in the 1990s, which were not known as a bellwether era of golf fashion. Some love the vintage look while others seem to be aghast. The debate drives attention, though.

Friday at the Wells Fargo Championship did little to calm the rhetoric. Day wore baggy, crème-colored pants and a button-down, short-sleeved shirt that featured brown-and-white vertical stripes and a chest pocket. Day was at a loss for words when Golf Channel’s Todd Lewis asked him to describe the look.

“I honestly don’t know,” he said before calling it, “Late '90s, early 2000s Tiger on the bottom and Mr. (Ben) Hogan up top.” The baggy pants were reminiscent of what Woods wore early in his career, while the shirt looked like it came from middle of the 20th century.

Earlier this year, Day told PGATOUR.COM that the looser fit was something that appealed to him as he entered his late 30s.

“I’m just looking for a bit of change and this is it,” he said.

Day drew plenty of TV time Friday because he also was near the top of the leaderboard. Day, the 2018 Wells Fargo winner, shot 67 on Friday and, at 7-under 135, is tied with Rory McIlroy for second place. Xander Schauffele (64-67) was four shots ahead of the pair.

Day, who wore Nike and Adidas clothes for much of his career, said he has not tired of the constant inquiries into his clothing choices.

“It’s been nice to be able to wear some stuff that looks a little different to the norm out here,” Day told Golf Channel. “Whether you like it or not is totally your opinion.”
