  • Var Tourism

Var is a pleasant tourist destination to visit all year round thanks to its pleasant climate and exceptional sunshine. It is the second most wooded department in France after the Landes. Here, many walks along the coast await the visitors. With its 432 km long, you can go on excursions every day without ceasing to be surprised: the beaches follow in the rocky capes and the magnificent wild creeks, where you can relax in complete peace and quiet. The less athletic can rest, during their holidays, on the fine sand of one of the department’s tourist seaside resorts such as Saint-Raphaël or Fréjus. The water is transparent and turquoise on the French Riviera: a real invitation to laze around.

The Var hinterland is not lacking in charm either. The perched villages are true little gems that attract many visitors. Strolling through the cobbled streets, you cannot help but be seduced by the authenticity of the place: the ocher facades of old buildings, the small squares decorated with fountains, the remains of ramparts or a castle, etc.

The department has exceptional natural sites , such as the impressive Verdon Canyon, a popular meeting place for kayakers, the Sainte-Baume, a high place of pilgrimage with its cave which sheltered Sainte Marie-Madeleine during the last years of her life, Port d’Alon, its Madrague and its coastal path, and the Port Cros et Porquerolles National Park, Hyères islands, whose pine forests and cliffs are populated by birds.

Culture is also at the heart of the tourist offer of the destination, with numerous museums, historical monuments, castles, ancient remains in Fréjus… The agenda is particularly rich: in summer, a festival takes place every week or so.

In the narrow streets of the center of Toulon, small restaurants offer a rich and tasty local cuisine: ratatouille, daube Provençale, not forgetting the famous bourride, a soup from Toulon made from aioli and white fish. Just a stone’s throw from Place Louis Blanc , you are greeted by the vendors of the Cours Lafayette and their singing accent. In this market, famous throughout the region, you will discover the typical perfumes of the Provencal soil.

In the upper town, the Haussmann buildings bear witness to the gentrification that took place in the 19th century. In Place de la Liberté stands the Toulon Opera House. In this superb neoclassical building, lyric singers still bewitch the spectators who come to watch the show, sitting in red velvet seats.

The Saint-Louis church is unique in its kind, it has everything of a Roman temple. Outside, four massive columns support a triangular pediment. Inside, you can only be surprised by the two rows of white stone columns. The choir is dominated by a sublime dome with lanterns.

As you pass through the door of the Arsenal , you discover the Musée de la Marine (Navy Museum). Toulon being the first French military port, it is not surprising that it was here that the decision to retrace the history of the navy was made.

From Mont Faron , the view of Toulon Harbor (one of the most beautiful in the world) is breathtaking. After taking the cable car, one can admire the city and the Saint-Mandrier peninsula, sitting on the terrace of a panoramic restaurant, a glass of pastis in hand.

Saint-Tropez

When you think of Saint-Tropez you probably think of Brigitte Bardot, famous French actress and singer of the 50’s, 60’s and the early 70’s who inspired “And God Created Woman” by Roger Vadim and made the city mythical . Nestled between the Massif des Maures and the Mediterranean Sea, it attracts celebrities and a cosmopolitan crowd every year. During the “Voiles de Saint-Tropez,” the most beautiful sailboats follow one another in the Gulf of Saint-Tropez.

From October to May, Saint-Tropez is a small, authentic fishing village. To discover it, take the harbor promenade from the bay of Canebiers and walk along the old buildings to the turquoise waters of the Graniers beach. If you prefer, you can also lie down on the warm sand of La Ponche district , to enjoy the sun in peace and quiet.

From June to September, tourists flock to the area and the ballet of yachts and pleasure boats is unceasing. The city puts on its glitter and transforms itself into a trendy seaside resort , appreciated by celebrities. As you walk around, you can gaze at the windows of the luxury stores that have sprung up over the years. To find some peace and quiet, you have to go to the oldest part of the city. There, in the alleyways, the ocher, yellow and orange-pink facades are the guardians of the city’s history.

Bandol is the oldest seaside resort of the coast. Every month, this dynamic town organizes various events: championships, various festivals, concerts and festivities honoring Provençal traditions, etc.

In the heart of a privileged nature, Bandol is a holiday resort appreciated by water sports enthusiasts . The numerous sailing schools and water sports clubs allow beginners to learn about these water activities.

Sheltered at the foot of the hills, the vines of Mourvèdre flourish. By following the wine route by car, on foot or by bike, a real tourist circuit, you can discover the town’s vineyard, which was one of the first to obtain an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (Protected Designation of Origin) in 1941. The wines of Bandol have a worldwide reputation: red wines, rosés and white wines are appreciated for their refinement and subtle aromas.

Travel Guide To The Var

Free travel guide to The Var France

By reputation, the Var is the least alluring part of Provence: the boring bit between the Bouches-du-Rhone and the Alpes-Maritimes through which the A8 autoroute runs monotonously. It is a départment with not much history and Toulon, the capital of Var, is a sprawling naval port; but, if you leave the A8 at Le Muy and head north into the Haut Var, you soon encounter panoramas that are anything but monotonous: vast forests of cypress, oak and pine; plunging gorges, waterfalls, caves and hilltop villages every bit as seductive as their better-known and far more expensive counterparts along the Cote d'Azur or the Vaucluse. It is the sense of serenity that makes the central and upper Var so unexpectedly appealing. It is also the gastronomic heartland of the region, with glorious daily markets and superb food.

5 pretty hilltop villages in the var, france.

mists over the green valley with hills to the right and left

Do you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the French Riviera and explore the cooler, greener countryside?  Head up into the hills and spend some time in the picturesque hilltop villages in the Var. Nestled up in the hills about an hour’s drive west and inland from Nice and Cannes, the Var is in the  Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur region in the south-east of France.

Many of the medieval hilltop towns and villages were built in the 12th and 13th Centuries in strategic positions on the hills so that they were protected from invasion. They were built in the time of horses and carts, so many of the streets are too narrow for cars and you have to make your way up on foot.

The walls of the houses are creamy or vibrantly painted and the terracotta tiles on the roofs give it the quintessential Provence feel. With winding cobbled streets and alleyways, towns, villages, and the occasional castle or two, expanses of greenery and lakes and rivers, the Var is a beautiful place to visit.

Pretty Hilltop Villages in the Var

With several hundred hilltop villages or  villages perches to explore, how do you choose which ones to go to? I have visited the Var many times and here are my five favourite hilltop villages in the Var to spend time in.

View from below of the hilltop town of Fayence, showing the terraces of cream coloured buildings with red roofs against a blue sky

Like most of the towns and villages in the area, Fayence started off as a fortified town and some of the remnants of the early fortifications can be seen around the town including the Porte Sarrasine from the 14th Century.

From the old stone wash house at the bottom of the town, creamy stone houses climb the hill up to the top in a zig zag fashion, winding its way to the Clock Tower at the very top.

If you are not confident with parking on steep hills, drive to the top of the town where there is plenty of parking in the municipal car park.

view over the town of Fayence, one of the hilltop villages in the Var, in the foreground are the tiles depicting the town. There are mist covered hills in the background and the sun is rising on the left

From the Clock Tower at the top Fayence you can take in the stunning 360-degree view across the town, over the surrounding area and to the hills beyond. The endless green of the plains and wooded area go on for miles. The edge of the 19th Century Clock Tower has been embellished with a painted tiled fresco of the view which also helps you locate places in the distance.

The inside of La Cave de Fayence with rows of bottles of wine on shelves and on tables. Red white and rose wine bottles

Tucked in and around the streets of Fayence are ateliers, art galleries and antique shops as well as clothes and food shops.

One of my favourite shops is La Cave de Fayence where you can peruse the wines, champagne, jam, sweets, honey, soap, olives & olive oil and other Provençal products on offer. They offer advice on wine pairings without the heavy sales pitch you get in other places.

La Cave de Fayence | 1 place Léon Roux | 83440 Fayence| Facebook

yellow bowls of green and black olives with red peppers in the foreground and bowls of black olives, garlic and green olives in the background

Every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, Church Square is turned over to a bustling and vibrant market. The stalls offer fresh vegetables, cheeses, olives and olive oils as well as clothing, linen and local produce. If the fish sellers are there, be sure to pick up some plump prawns, oysters or fresh fish.

FAYENCE market fresh seafood

There are also several specialist markets held in Fayence throughout the year including an Antiques’ Market four times a year; An Art Fair on the 3rd Sunday in July with over 60 artists and Artisans and an Exhibition of “Provence Gourmande” on Sunday in mid-August.

Down on the plains below Fayence is a small airfield where there is a gliding school. You can have a meal or drink or for the more adventurous why not try a 25-minute flight. You can glide across the beautiful countryside surrounding Fayence. For more information contact  www.aapca.net

The village of Claviers

I do have a soft spot for Claviers, not just because my father lives there, but it is such a gentle, pretty little village with winding cobbled streets, a small square, a church, and beautiful views over the surrounding tree-covered hills. The locals are friendly and you can have a game of boules while taking a beer or cup of coffee at Bar Tabac Saint Eloi.

A coffee in Claviers

Sit in the shade of the plane trees in the square outside the St. Silvester church and watch the world go by. In the square, you have several restaurants, the most interesting is Le Clavero . Run by Guillaume, who is French and chef Gergely who is Hungarian but married to an Indonesian, the wonderful menu has influences of all three countries. You can sit inside the cosy restaurant or, when the weather is good, on the terrace in the square. Le Clavero closes during winter (October to March, check the website for details).

el clavero chefs 1

With narrow little lanes, dry stone walls, olive trees and tall picturesque townhouses the village is calming for the soul. Village life seems laid back, but actually, there is a lot going on; a choir, events where the whole village gets together to share a meal, brocantes – the French equivalent of a car boot sale, but oh so much better, traditional dancing make it the perfect place to spend some time relaxing.

Traditional dancing in the streets of Claviers

From Claviers, take the twisty, winding road down to the left past the deserted mill house – allegedly haunted and one of those that would be a dream/nightmare to renovate – and back up the other side and take the left fork you will come into Callas.

Callas Village viewed from above 1

Callas meanders down the hill with a series of steps taking you between the different levels.

Most of the restaurants and eating places are along the Rue Saint Eloi. Try the cosy La Grupie Restaurant for amazing fish dishes and traditional French dishes, or Clotilde Patisserie for divine eclairs and pastries. Along at the main square is La Fontaine who serve beautiful French dishes alongside hearty stews.

Clothide Patisserie in Callas

During the week you can sit in the square and have a coffee, but on Tuesdays and Saturdays, the main square is taken over by the market, filled with fresh fruit, vegetables, olives, cheeses and other local produce.

Callas from the bottom 1

The hills and plains around Callas are filled with olive trees; young trees growing alongside old gnarled trees bearing fruits. The olives are all harvested by hand, with large nets put below the trees.

and olive grove with sun streaming through the trees

On the road out of the village is The Moulin de Callas. Started in 1928, the mill uses locally grown olives to produce oil, soaps, olive wood chopping boards and a range of other items. It is worth a visit to see the old mill wheels and presses which originally did the hard work of milling the olives.

bargemon

Bargemon is to the north of Claviers and sits at an altitude of 500m. The small medieval village is charming to wander around with many brightly painted building and cobbled streets.

In the centre are squared shaded by large plane trees where you can stop for a coffee, lunch, dinner or aperitif. My favourite restaurant is La Taverne in Place Philippe Chauvier where you can while away a few hours chatting and eating their delicious food. Don’t miss the 18th century found in the Place too.

Like many of the villages in the area, there are many artists who exhibit here in the art galleries. In early July there is a handicraft and agricultural fair with live music and entertainment for all. The weekly market is every Thursday morning.

With parts of Bargemon dating back to the 12th and 16th century and ramparts to explore as well as the 15th Century church and the amazing views down the valley. Bargemon is a beautiful place to spend an afternoon.

The ornamental fountain in the centre of Seillans

Considered to be one of the Plus Beaux Villages in the Var – most beautiful villages – Seillans sits prettily to the north east of Fayence. Nestled into the hillside with views from the top out over the surrounding green valley.

Like the rest of the ville perché , the village is on a very steep hill, in fact, so steep that you can only access the medieval centre on foot. Climb up the cobbled streets to the top to see the 11th Century castle and 13th Century Saint Léger Church. Among its historic monuments, Seillans features a medieval castle (11th century) and the delightful Church of Saint Leger, which a clocktower that was added in 1561.

Take a break in one of the shaded little squares for a cup or glass of something and take it all in. In Place de Thoroun there are a beautiful fountain and plane trees for shade which is perfect while you have a meal at La Glorie de Mon Pere .

Also in Place de Thoroun, there is a museum to the surrealist artist, Max Ernst. Ernst made his home in Seillans and lived out his last 10 years there. One of his statues stands in Place de la Republique.

Seillans holds an annual pottery market in Place de la Republique on 15 August – which is an annual holiday in France – where you can pick up artworks from established and emerging artists. There are also regular brocante which can be fun to wander around and pick up a bargain or two.

Thankyou Larch. We found your ” Five pretty hilltop villages” and used it as a guide today and visited Claviers, then Bargemon. We were utterly charmed by Claviers. We enjoyed a delicious lunch in Le Clavero, the best food we have eaten to date in The Var, then ambled up and down the little ruelles, finishing up relaxing on a bench with a stunning view out over the entire valley, up at the tiny old chapel, St Sylvèstre, with nothing but the sound of bees humming in the trees around the village. A quiet, sleepy idyll. We then went on to the busier Bergamon and enjoyed a good walk up and down the pathways through the medieval buildings and finished off with a coffee in the square. Seillans tomorrow. Can’t wait.

Hi Jan, I am absolutely delighted that you visited Claviers and Bargemon. The area has a special place in my heart and it is lovely that you have experienced it too.

Gosh, these villages are so beautiful – including the surroundings. I’m rather familiar with the southwest of France around Bordeaux and the French border. If only we could travel a bit more freely, I’d visit this region in a blink of an eye – especially since it seems like it’s not very touristy and genuinly French – I like that a lot!

What a beautiful part of the world, that I had never even heard of before! I love all your references to the squares where you can stop for a coffee & watch the world go by. Love the markets too & the food looks & sounds delicious. A slower pace of life is exactly what we all need.

Avatar of Linda (LD Holland)

We love to head out for day trips when we travel. The hilltop towns around Var should exactly like the kind of places we would visit. We love to find a patio and watch the local life go on around us. How fun to see traditional dancing in Claviers. It would be great to visit on market day.

Avatar of Nancy Hann

OH! These villages are simply magical. I can imagine wandering around them for days. Does your dad take in boarders? LOL. Those olive photos make my mouth water too. Thanks for sharing.

5 Charming Villages in The Var You Need to Visit

5 Charming Villages in The Var You Need to Visit

One of the most alluring aspects of the south of France is its multitude of medieval villages tucked away on hillsides and perched on top of rocky outcrops. Away from the crowds and bustle of the coast, gorgeous as that is, you’ll find authentic, dreamy villages begging to be explored. Here are 5 charming villages in the Var you need to visit.

Charming Villages in the Var

charming villages in the Var

Bargème is one of those places that almost leaves you lost for words it’s so overwhelmingly charming.

This tiny hamlet of 223 inhabitants (2018) of whom only a dozen or so actually live in the walled old part, sits on a rocky outcrop overlooking the plain from 1097 metres altitude, making it the highest village in the Var department.

charming village in the Var | Lou Messugo

It belongs to the association of les Plus Beaux Villages de France making it “officially” one of the prettiest villages in the country so I’m far from alone in finding it amazing.

Bargème lies within the Parc naturel regional du Verdon , only 20 km from the famous Verdon Gorge, which makes it an easy side visit to a trip to the gorges.

The 12th century feudal village is dominated by the ruined Château Sabran de Ponteves, destroyed during the Wars of Religion in the 16th century. The keep is visible for miles around, and once up close it’s possible to explore the remains of the ramparts, towers and a couple of 14th century fortified gates.

Also interesting to visit are its many chapels including one of the oldest in the Var, Chapelle St Antoine, probably dating from the 11th century.

grassy steps in charming village

Bargème is so tiny it’s impossible to get lost wandering around its narrow grassy lanes taking in the extensive views and enjoying the peace and quiet.

When we visited, we only saw 2 other people, a dog snoozing in the sun and a few lazy cats but it was winter during the pandemic so it’s possible there’s a bit more life during normal times and in summer.

However, the total silence made it extra special for us, it was utterly magical.

Seillans is another village that is officially labelled one of the “most beautiful villages in France” as it too belongs to the association l es Plus Beaux Villages de France .

It has a rich cultural history from medieval to modern times and has some interesting architecture such as its 11th century feudal castle, Sarrasine gate, 12th century St Léger church and several pretty fountains.

Seillans village in the Var

Perched on a hillside, this charming village in the Var is surrounded by a protected olive forest, and from its golden houses glowing in the afternoon sun it looks out on a bucolic rural view. Inside the village walls you’ll find narrow cobbled streets, with stone archways and shady squares.

shady fountain and stone gateway

The centre is only accessible on foot and can be quite steep at times but you’ll find cafés where you can stop for a glass of something refreshing, including the very popular restaurant la Gloire de mon Père.

charming village lane

The village, with its majestic centuries-old plane trees, has long attracted artists. Surrealist Max Ernst lived the last years of his life in Seillans and there is a museum dedicated to his art, worthy of a quick visit.

If you don’t have the time or inclination to go into the museum, you can see one of Ernst’s sculptures in the Place de la République.

castle and blue sky in Seillans

Mons is an astonishingly picturesque and utterly charming village in the Var. It belongs to a different association, not the “most beautiful” but a village de charactère instead. This label is similar to the “most beautiful” though it is for slightly bigger communes with a remarkable heritage. Its aim is to develop tourism.

charming village in the Var

In the case of Mons, its originality lies in the 35 wrought iron signs that decorate the streets telling the stories of ancient trades associated with the village.

Strolling around the narrow streets we found signs for a bootmaker, a dressmaker, a barber, a café and a butcher among others, all written in Provençal.

The village has a couple of churches and a quirky little museum of matchstick models of boats for aficionados of the unusual.

At one end of the village you’ll find the vast place St Sébastien with a magnificent panoramic view stretching as far as Cannes, the Lérins islands, the Estérel, St Tropez and even Corsica on a clear day.

panoramic view in Mons village in the Var

Callian is a charming hill village in the Var, nestled between the larger towns of Montauroux and Fayence. Its particularity is that its streets wind up in a spiral to the 12th-13th century castle at the top which can be seen for miles around.

Unfortunately, the castle is privately owned and not open to the public, though its Guard Room is visitable during les Journées du Patrimoine (a weekend in mid September).

Village of Callian in the Var

Callian has two churches of interest, the 17th century chapel Notre Dame des Roses, (with 12th century bell tower and nave), listed as a historical monument and Notre Dame de l’Assomption for its brightly coloured glazed tiled bell tower.

Callian’s charm lies in its pretty streets full of flowers and sleepy cats.

In Place Bourguignon you’ll find an unusual waterfall-style fountain covered in moss that has been refreshing the square since around 1875.

There are also a couple of restaurants to refresh yourself in a different way!

Tanneron lies at the heart of the biggest mimosa forest in Europe and I’ve included it in this selection of charming villages to visit in the Var, not so much for the village itself but for its surroundings.

view of village, mimosa and snowy mountains

From late January through to March, when the mimosa is flowering and the hills turn yellow, one of the most lovely things to do on a sunny winter’s day is to take a drive along the Route du Mimosa to Tanneron.

road sign in Tanneron

The panoramic views both from the village and as you drive up to it of miles and miles of yellow are breathtaking.

But be aware that this natural spectacle is incredibly popular causing traffic jams on the narrow mountain roads at weekends especially during the annual Fête du Mimosa (in February).

My advice is to go during the week if you possibly can.

So that’s my small selection of charming villages in the Var you need to visit. They are all easily reachable in a day trip from Lou Messugo, or from Cannes, Grasse and surrounds if you’re not staying with us.

Have you been to any? Let me know in the comments below.

Visiting the Charming Towns of the Var Region in the South of France

Discover the charming var region in the south of france.

The Var region is the most forested region of France. It is a highly visited area with people whizzing through on the way to or from the Cote d’Azur and Provence.  It has many delightful inland and coastal villages that are worth spending time in. If you enjoy wine, then you have landed in heaven since this is the Cote de Provence production’s centre, and there are many wine trails to follow. Moreover, you can easily get a relatively cheap bed & breakfast in Var for your stay. With this in mind, let us suggest several inviting cities to visit in Var region.

Saint Tropez

St. Tropez Var France

Sainte-Maxime ville littoral port bateau mer nautisme quai capitainerie immeuble

This city attracts visitors and celebrities from across the world. When thinking about Saint Tropez, the first thing that should come to mind is the sandy beaches that overlook a deep blue sea. St. Tropez also has a significant cultural heritage with several museums where you can learn more about the Var Region as well as the fascinating butterfly house. The city has no shortage of entertainment: it is well known for its sailing events and yacht racing. And of course, there is always an active beach scene that has attracted the jet-set and movie stars for decades. In other words, you will not be lacking for things o do when you are in Saint Tropez.

Frejus, Var France

Fréjus is known as the ‘City of Art and History’ in the South of France and it has an ancient heritage that is always a prestigious setting. It is among the popular and pleasant holiday destinations. There are nautical pleasures to enjoy while you are in Fréjus, such as bathing in the sea, water skiing, kite surfing, walking in the picturesque narrow streets and gourmet routes, fishing, scuba diving, and coastal sailing in the many coves. Also, many local festivals , like the Bravado Festival that usually takes place on the third Sunday of May.  Being a member of the City and Crafts of Art network, it has been striving to promote the workshops and artists’ installations throughout the year.

Draguignan Var France

This is referred to as a village of theatrical scenes, festivals, and art exhibitions. It is also known as the ‘land of the living.’  Draguignan, is a village with a year-round rhythm of village festivals, markets, and moments for the discoveries of traditions, local produce, and craft. At the Gulf of Saint Tropez and the Gorges du Verdon’s crossroads, both brilliant and authentic Draguignan has been inviting visitors and local citizens to discover Provence seduction. Some of the things to do and see in this city include visiting the Stone Fairy, the Rhone and the America cemetery’s memorials, La Chapelle Saint-Sauveur, and the historic clock tower.

Toulon South of France

Toulon, together with its port is situated on one of the most magnificent natural harbors in Europe. Alongside the Darse Vieille dock, the Cronstadt quay is found; a very popular spot to its many cafes and shops. A stay in this city is an opportunity to sample the famous bourride. Bourride is a local soup, which is made with aioli and white fish. The Musée national de la Marine, which is situated at the entrance of the former naval shipyard, explores the maritime history of the Mediterranean region. It is also impossible to leave this city without conquering Mount Faron that dominates at a height of 584 meters; this can be done by taking cable cars that follow the steep limestone cliffs.

Brignoles City Center South of France

Situated 50 kilometers North of Toulon, you will find the village of Brignoles. At the green heart Provence which is rich in agriculture, Brignoles has experienced a significant demographic growth that rose from 6,000 inhabitants in the Second World War’s aftermath to about 17,000 today. From the time that this city was developed, a palace was transformed into a picturesque town center and a museum with architectural richness. This helped the city to become among the capitals of Provence, in addition to attracting craftsmen, merchants, as well as even industrialists. The remarkable natural environment and heritage of the region have made this city a popular tourist destination.

Bandol, France

On the coast, Bandol is the oldest and largest resort that has a magnificent Gulf position and is saturated with light. It has several sandy beaches, which line the bay of Bandol and enjoys gentle breezes.  You cannot leave this city without visiting Bandol’s calm multiple creeks, which mark the ledge’s path. For sports lovers, there is a game of bowls on the seafront near the bandstand. In other words, there are several interesting activities to do and places to visit while you are in this city which is known as a haven for artists, writers, and French families escaping city life.

You should plan in advance to get the most out of your stay in the beautiful Var area and select the exact place to book a bed & breakfast in Var.  The fact that this area of France has many desirable places to visit and activities to do, has made it one of the best tourist destinations in the country to include in your visit to France.
