Sindh Museum was established in 1971 with the purpose of collecting, conserving, displaying, and maintaining Sindh’s fascinating culture, antiquities and artefacts. Some of these artefacts have been unearthed from the archaeological sites in Mohenjodaro. Moreover, it also provides an insight into a Sindhi house, the culture of Sindhi people and their traditions through models and statues.

Tourists visiting the museum can see the rooms, household objects and activities of their daily routine in a relaxed mood. In addition to providing a glimpse of the lifestyle of ancient Sindhi families, the museum also has a gallery where works and contributions of some of the most important personalities have been displayed. The concrete construction in Hyderabad hasn’t affected green spaces in the city. There are ample small and big parks and gardens where people can go for a morning or an evening walk or spend quality time with their families. One such location is Rani Bagh , a park named after Queen Victoria.

The park was previously known as Das Garden but the name was later changed to the Rani Bagh (‘rani’ means queen and ‘bagh’ means garden). The park was established as a botanical garden about 160 years ago in 1861 but later birds and animals were also introduced, changing its status to the zoological garden. Pakka Qila is a fort located in the heart of Hyderabad. It was built in the 18 th century by Mian Ghulam Shah Kalhora as his new capital. The construction of Pakka Qila was completed in 1768 from where the then ruler could see his new capital being built. After the fall of the empire of Kalhoras in 1782, the city was ruled by a Baloch tribe, Talpur, which was led by Mir Fateh Ali Khan Talpur. Before shifting to Pakka Qila (pronounced as ‘Pakko Qilo’ in Sindhi and ‘Pakka Qila’ in Urdu), Talpurs kept ruling from Khudabad (old capital during Mian Ghulam Shah era) which was later flooded by the Indus River.

It was given the name Pakka Qila because it was built from ‘pakki’ or burnt brick. There is a huge tower inside the fort which still exists. It is believed that it was a watchtower or gun post during Talpur’s rule but after the city was demilitarized, it was used as a water reservoir and residents of the area still use it for the same purpose. One of the remains of the fort worth visiting is “Haram of Talpur” which was the residence of Mir Fateh Ali Khan Talpur.

Navalrai Ghannta Ghar

Any list about the best places to visit in Hyderabad is incomplete without this spot. Navalrai Ghanta Ghar ( ghanta ghar means clock tower) is a reminder of the pre-partition fish and meat market in the area of Hirabad, which is one of the oldest areas in the city. It is at the entrance of Pakka Qila and is a pure eastern Sindhi market where you can find household items at very fair prices. Moreover, the place still has some old buildings and Havelis which are most famous among students of architecture. The clock tower was built in 1914.

Mukhi House is a heritage home that is about 100 years old. It was built as a palace by a famous and influential Sindhi Hindu personality, Mukhi Jethanand in 1920 that had 12 rooms, two courtyards, two big halls and a dome. The stone cutting on the walls of the palace is called ‘chitsali’ and is a work of the Salawati community of Jaipur.

After partition, the Mukhi family migrated to India but later in 2013, the family visited their house once again and gave it to the Sindh Government which later turned it into a heritage museum. The museum still has its original doors and window panels made of Sheesham and Sagwan wood. The stone used in building the palace came from Jodhpur in India. The Mukhi House is located near Pakka Qila.

Hyderabad , population 1.7 million (2017), is the second largest city of Sindh province and the 8th largest city in Pakistan . Lying along the River Indus, it is rich in culture, traditions and history. It was the capital of Sindh for many centuries, and used to be known as the Paris of India , due to belief that streets of the city were washed every morning with clean drinking water from the River Indus. Hyderabad is now an important commercial and cultural center, and serves as a transit between the rural and the urban Sindh. Noteworthy sights in Hyderabad include the tombs of the Kalhora and Talpur rulers, two royal fortresses, and the miles-long bustling and colourful Shahi Bazaar.

Hyderabad's early history dates back to a small fishing village on the River Indus known as Neroon Kot, named after its local Sindhi ruler Neroon.

Later, Hyderabad was founded in 1768 by Kalhora ruler Mian Ghulam Shah Kalhoro on the ruins of Neroon Kot and the city was made capital of Sindh. It started to expand, progressed and flourished, and obtained the nickname of Heart of the Mehran as the Kalhora ruler Mian Ghulam Shah was said to have fallen in love with the city. After the death of the last Kalhoro ruler, the Talpur dynasty conquered the region. The city expanded, progressed and flourished more under the Talpur rulers. Talpur rule lasted until 1843, when the British colonial empire conquered the region, making the city into part of the Bombay Presidency of the empire.

After the independence of Pakistan in 1947, the minority Hindus and Sikhs migrated to India, while the Muslims refugees from India were settled in refugee camps in Hyderabad. Nearly all Hindus of Hyderabad left for India due to better socio-economic prospects in India. The massive migration of Muhajirs into Pakistan after the independence of Pakistan in 1947 raised the population levels of the city to an extreme. The late 1980s saw a black period in the history of Hyderabad, as riots and violence broke out between the Muhajirs and Sindhi nationalist parties, due to which the social fabric of the city was damaged. Until 1955 the city of Hyderabad served as the capital of Sindh province, which was later dissolved and Karachi was made the capital of Sindh.

Hyderabad has a relatively mountainous climate, somewhat more pleasant than other parts of Central Sindh throughout the year. Summer and winter are the two main seasons, while spring and autumn are very short. The period from mid-April to late June is the hottest time of the year with temperatures as high as 48.5 °C. Winters are usually warm, around 25°C during the day time and often below 10 °C at night, and are the best time to visit the city. The highest ever recorded temperature in Hyderabad is 48.5°C in 1991, while the lowest is 1°C in 2012.

By car [ edit ].

Hyderabad is connected with rest of Pakistan through National Highways # N-5 and # N-55 (the Indus Highway). Travellers coming from the north of Pakistan, usually prefer to come via the N-5, whereas travellers coming from the north-west of Pakistan prefer to use the N-55. Hyderabad is connected with Karachi both via a highway and motorway but travel by the M-9 motorway (Super Highway) is preferred. It's 150km long and the journey take about two hours.

By bus [ edit ]

Plenty of air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned buses and vans run to Hyderabad from other major cities of Pakistan. A journey from Karachi cost around Rs 200 (non-air-conditioned) or Rs 250 (air-conditioned), whereas from Sukkur the price is Rs 500 (non air-conditioned) or Rs 700 (air-conditioned).

Hyderabad has railway connections with almost all the major Pakistani cities and towns. Most trains travelling between Karachi and rest of the country make a brief stop at Hyderabad. Hyderabad station is a major railway junction, the largest and busiest station in Pakistan besides Karachi.

If you're travelling from northern Punjab with both speed and comfort as a priority, the Karakoram Express is one of the best choices. This train runs daily non-stop between Lahore and Karachi and is faster than other trains, taking less than 20 hours travel time, because it makes only a few stops, whereas other trains make stops at every major station along the route and are usually delayed as well. The Karakoram Express has both economy and air-con class accommodation. A ticket (berth) on the Karakoram Express in air-con class will cost not more than Rs 5,000.

Other than that, plenty of trains (both economy and air-conditioned class) run from Lahore as well other major big cities such as Peshawar , Faisalabad , Multan , Quetta , and Rawalpindi on a daily basis. But expect them to be slower, as they make stops at every railway station along the way. Tezgam or Shalimar Express have air-conditioned class so are best preferred for travellers from Punjab; other air-conditioned class trains are Khyber Mail for travelers from Peshawar, The Bolan Mail is recommended for travellers from Quetta, although this train calls at Kotri railway station.

Get around [ edit ]

Transportation is by private car, taxi, or rickshaw.

Unlike in Karachi , black and white taxis do not operate in Hyderabad. Taxis are generally private cars and operated by taxi companies, so they cannot be hailed on streets, since distinguishing between a taxi and a private car may be difficult. You can ask at a hotels to arrange a taxi, or call the taxi company offices. These taxis are usually air-conditioned, modern and clean fleet which makes them the most comfortable, luxurious way to navigate around the city of Hyderabad especially in the blistering hot weather of Summer.

Rickshaws provide cheap and quick transportation within the city. Shared rickshaws, which are somewhat different from a traditional motorcycle rickshaw, are another option.

There are plans for metro bus and train systems to be built.

However, it used unbaked clay bricks, as opposed to fired baked bricks with which Pakka Qila was built. Thus the name Kacha Qila which means "weak fort". The fort is now in a very desolated state. Today, most people head to the fort to visit the shrine of Makki Shah built on the hill of the fort. Both the Pakka Qila and Kacha Qila are deteriorated and in a desolate state now, but they are good examples of early modern fortifications.

The park includes Eidgah (an open-air mosque with beautiful pink minarets for the annual Eid prayers), a zoo, lawns, children parks, jogging tracks, and a place with many eateries and food kiosks. The zoo contains a limited selection of animals (monkeys and crocodiles, but no lions or bears), as well a large fishing pond. It is quite run-down by international standards.  
• Institute of Sindhology Museum , University of Sindh, Jamshoro . founded in 1962, it is one of the major resources on the history of Sindh and was the first research institution of its kind, and brought Sindhology to the forefront of international research. It has dioramas which display many aspects of Sindhi history, heritage, music and culture. Some very interesting dioramas depict the lifestyles of the desert tribes of Thar and Kohistan. The museum has archaeological, ethnological, ethno-musical, photographic, coins, Indus-painting, and general sections. Artifacts on display in the museum represent the history and demography of the region. The collections contain archaeological material, wood-work, thread-work, metal-work, leather-work, pottery, jewellery, coins, armaments, photographs, and paintings that have been collected since the 1970s. A special gallery contains portraits of prominent personalities.

The total length of the bridge is 1,948 ft (593 meters). Kotri Bridge has a single railway track between the roads. Heavy traffic is restricted to crossing the Kotri Bridge.

The Tomb of Mian Ghulam Nabi Kalhoro is located in the Journalist colony near Central Jail in Hyderabad. Mian Ghulam Nabi Kalhoro son of Noor Muhammad Kalhoro ruled for about 01 year (AD 1775 – 1776). This is a tourist attraction under the Department of Culture & Tourism, Govt. of Sindh.

Kotri Junction

Kotri Junction is a railway station in Kotri. Currently, there is no busy train station but every train crosses Kotri Junction. There is a train running to Quetta from Kotri, but nowadays it is closed due to COVID-19.

HOW TO GET TO HYDERABAD?

Hyderabad is connected north of Pakistan through National Highway 5 and Indus Highway N 55. Travelers who are coming from the North of Pakistan usually prefer National Highway 5 whereas travelers from the northwest of Pakistan take Indus Highway N 55. Hyderabad is located on the river Indus. Hyderabad is connected to Karachi through Highways and Motorways but travelers preferred Motorway M9 Smart Motorway. The journey time from Hyderabad to Karachi takes 2 hours by Motorway.

There are a number of air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned buses and vans running to Hyderabad from all major cities of Pakistan. A journey from Hyderabad to Karachi costs around Rs 300 (non-air-conditioned) or Rs 400 air-conditioned.

Hyderabad Junction railway station is the main station where almost every train stops. Hyderabad station connects almost all the major cities of Pakistan and towns. Most trains run from Karachi and get a big stopover here. Hyderabad railway station is the busiest railway station in Pakistan besides Karachi.

If you are traveling from Lahore or any other destination in northern Punjab with both speed and comfort as your first priority, then the Karakoram Express Train is one of the best choices. Karakoram Express runs daily non-stop between Lahore to Karachi and it runs faster than other trains. It takes 20 hours journey from Lahore to Karachi, because it takes only a few stops. While other trains stop at every major station and get delayed. The Karakoram Express has both economy seat + berth and air-conditioned (seat + berth). Plenty of trains both economy and air-conditioned class run from major cities such as Peshawar, Faisalabad, Multan, Quetta, and Rawalpindi on a daily basis. They stop at every station along the way and usually run late.

Located about 30 kilometres away from Hyderabad, the famous Chilkur Balaji Temple is located in the small picturesque village of Chilkur and is a favourite pilgrim spot. The presiding deity at the Chilkur Balaji temple is Lord Balaji Venkateswara, along with Sridevi and Bhoodevi accompanying him. It is believed that a visit to the temple, can grant the aspirants, a US Visa. The belief finds its roots in an incident when a few students who had their Visa applications rejected, came and prayed here only to have their applications accepted.

29. Udgir Fort, Latur

Udgir Fort is a 12th-century fort famous for the treaty of Udgir which was a result of the battle between the Marathas, led by Sadashivrao and the Nizams. The fort is named after Rishi Udaygiri Maharaj whose Samadhi rests 60 feet under the ground level of the same fort. The fort is designed in a quadrilateral form with several hall spaces. The surrounding hills have ruins of observation points built of white clay for military purposes. The fort is surrounded by trenches as deep as 40 feet to avoid intrusion. Some parts of the fort have Arabic and Persian inscriptions. The fort is supposed to have underground tunnels that connect to the Bidar and Bhalki forts in Karnataka.

30. Ausa Fort, Latur

Ausa fort in Latur district is one such fort that has a blurred history of itself. Ausa Fort’s prominence came to light during the fights between the Deccan Sultanates after the Bahamani Era. The Fort had been named 13 different names, but the name Ausa was the last one that it is now known by. The fort is located in a depressed ground level, and the highest point of the fort looks over the surrounding higher ground level. The design seems to have been useful to watch out for incoming armies from a greater distance while keeping most of the fort hidden.

31. Mangalagiri, Guntur

A temple town located in Guntur, Seemandhra (Andhra Pradesh). Literally translating to 'The Auspicious Hill', this place is one of the 8 important Mahakshetrams or sacred destinations in India . Mangalagiri holds huge importance in the Indian culture as it is believed that Lord Vishnu had manifested himself on the very soil of Mangalagiri and Goddess Lakshmi performed penance on the peak of the hill as well. Owing to the legends pertaining to the divine, there is a tremendous footfall of believers here throughout the year. In addition to the temples, places of interest around Mangalagiri include Chinna Jeeyar Ashram in Seeta Nagaram, Vundavalli Caves, Bhavani Island, Kanakadurga Temple, Jain Temple, Uppalapadu Bird Sanctuary, and Amaravati.

Nelakondapalli is a historic Buddhist site with Stupas and Buddha idols. The site was found during the excavations conducted in 1977. Excavations have unearthed foundations of brick built Viharas, wells, cisterns, a Mahastupa, a bronze idol of Buddha, a miniature Stupa carved in limestone and other materials from the third and fourth centuries. Nelakondapalli is associated with the Hindu epic Mahabharata. The Virata Raju Dibba and Keechaka Gundam, archaeological evidences from the period of the Mahabharata are located 1.6 km from Nelakondapalli. Nelakondapalli is also famous of being the Birth Place of Kancharla Gopanna, popularly known as Bhakta Ramadas who built popular Bhadrachalm temple. At a distance of 60 km Nagajuna Sagar, 30 Kms from Srisailam and 173 km from Hyderabad, the Nagarjuna Sagar - Srisailam Sanctuary (or Srisailam Sanctuary) is the largest tiger reserve in the country, spread across 3568 Sq. HINGLAJ, Pakistan (AP) — The ascent of steep mud volcanoes marks the start of Hindu pilgrims’ religious rituals in southwestern Pakistan.

They climb hundreds of stairs or clamber over rocks to reach the summit, tossing coconuts and rose petals into the shallow crater while seeking divine permission to visit Hinglaj Mata, an ancient cave temple that is the focus of their three-day worship.

The dramatic surroundings of Hingol National Park in Baluchistan province are the setting for Pakistan’s largest Hindu festival, Hinglaj Yatra, which started on Friday and ends on Sunday. Organizers say more than 100,000 Hindus are expected to participate.

Muslim-majority Pakistan is home to 4.4 million Hindus, just 2.14% of the population, and Hinglaj Mata is one of the few Hindu sites that continues to draw large numbers of pilgrims every year from across the country.

Muslims and Hindus generally live peacefully in Pakistan, from where most of the Hindus migrated to India when it was divided by British colonialists in 1947. But there have been attacks on Hindu temples in recent years as relations between the rivals remain tense.

Hindus believe Hinglaj Mata is one the places where the remains of Sati, the goddess of marital felicity and longevity, fell to earth after she ended her life.

Maharaj Gopal, the temple’s most senior cleric, explains why people flock to it.

“It is the most sacred pilgrimage in the Hindu religion,” said Gopal. “Whoever visits the temple and worships accordingly during these three days will have all of their sins forgiven.”

The journeys begin hundreds of kilometres (miles) away, mostly from neighbouring Sindh province . Hundreds of packed buses set off from cities like Hyderabad and Karachi, traveling along the Makran Coastal Highway that hugs Pakistan’s south and southwest.

But there’s scant parking and vehicular access to the holy sites, so many pilgrims disembark and complete their travel by walking over parched and rocky terrain, sometimes barefoot and carrying children or luggage.

It’s a few kilometres (miles) from the main road to the mud volcano and then, from there, almost 45 kilometres (25 miles) to Hinglaj Mata.

Winds buffet the desert-like conditions, churning up dust that whips the eyes, nose and mouth. The pilgrims’ festive cheer and brightly coloured apparel are a contrast to the arid landscape. Strong gusts distort people’s celebratory cries of “Jai mata di” and “Jai shiv shankar.”

Kanwal Kumar, 28, was visiting the temple for the first time with her husband. “We have yet to conceive a child after six years of marriage, so we are hopeful for help from the goddess,” she said. “We believe that no one returns empty-handed. All wishes are granted by Hinglaj Mata.”

The Hindu festival brings the Pakistani park to life. Hundreds of stalls spring up to sell snacks, drinks, jewellery, and clothing. Vats of hot food are prepared in the open air or thatched huts. Pilgrims purchase coconuts, sweetmeats, flowers, and incense for their ritualistic offerings.

Aloo Kumar, 55, wanted to express her gratitude to Lord Shiva, one of Hinduism’s three most important deities. “He blessed our family with a grandson,” Kumar said, gesturing toward the boy beside her cradling his baby sibling. “We prayed for a grandson during last year’s festival.”

Hinglaj Mata thrums with activity, even after dark. Fairy lights and other decorations adorn the shrine and pilgrims jostle for position in front of it, sometimes holding up babies so the deities can bless them. Stewards urge them to pay their respects and move along.

The park’s Hingol River provides Hindu pilgrims with the opportunity for ritual bathing, like the Ganges in India.

While there is no ban on Hindu worship in Pakistan, openly practising the faith is not routine as ties between India and Pakistan are broken. Their interactions are riddled with animosity and suspicion after having fought three wars, built up their armies and armed them with nuclear weapons.

Travel restrictions and hostile bureaucracies largely keep people from crossing the border for leisure, study and work, although the countries sometimes make exceptions for religious pilgrimages, usually for India’s Sikhs .

The decades of political hostility present a challenge for the minority Hindu community, as many in Pakistan equate Hindus with India. The reverse exists in India, where Muslims complain of discrimination.

Versimal Divani, the general-secretary of Hinglaj Mata, lamented that only Hindus in Pakistan can attend the festival.

“We can visit this temple in our beloved country whenever our heart desires,” said Divani. “But this is not the case for the rest of the world’s Hindus. I would like the Pakistani government to issue them visas so they can come here and take blessings with them. It’s good for people-to-people contact and it’s good for the economy too.”
