See the start of ash and pikachu’s latest adventure, even if the star of the show is sleeping in..

Ash and Pikachu’s latest adventure has begun in Pokémon Journeys: The Series , the 23rd season of the iconic animated series. You can now get a taste of this new season by watching the first episode on Pokémon TV or the official Pokémon YouTube channel . This premiere episode, titled “ Enter Pikachu! ”, is a bit unusual in that it’s a flashback. We see Ash as a young boy, sleeping in too late and missing Professor Oak’s Pokémon Camp. And Pikachu, Ash’s eventual partner Pokémon, has yet to evolve—it’s still a Pichu!

The episode follows Pichu as it befriends a group of Kangaskhan. Meanwhile, Ash is missing out on Pokémon Camp, but two youngsters named Goh and Chloe are in attendance. The pair get separated from the group and have an encounter with the Mythical Pokémon Mew. This sets the stage for the rest of Pokémon Journeys: The Series , when Ash and Goh eventually meet and set off together on their shared quest to explore the world of Pokémon.

Remember, you can catch the first episode of Pokémon Journeys: The Series on Pokémon TV—here on Pokemon.com or using the Pokémon TV mobile app —or by visiting the official Pokémon YouTube channel . You can then stream the rest of the season on Netflix. The first 12 episodes are available to watch on Netflix now, and more episodes will be added every three months for the duration of the season. Tune in to see what new escapades (and what new Pokémon) await Ash, Pikachu, and their friends!

Pokemon The Arceus Chronicles: What We Know So Far

Pokemon takes a trip down memory lane while simultaneously honoring their relationship with Nintendo in Pokemon: The Arceus Chronicles.

This Pokemon 4-part mini-series aims to connect the Pokemon Legends: Arceus Nintendo Switch game with the Anime universe as Ash's journey intertwines with yet another Legendary Pokemon , while some old friends tag along for support. Naturally, Japan got the first peak at the new installment, which was released in January 2022 to coincide with Nintendo's Pokémon: Arceus video game. After making a mini-debut at the Pokémon World Championships in London in August, fans across the world can expect Ash and Pikachu to entertain them with an epic adventure on Netflix in September.

Ash and Goh take their adventures to the Sinnoh region and are met with some familiar faces in a world that has been recreated to resemble the past, referencing the region once known as Hisui. The storyline also makes an unquestionable nod at the classic Diamond & Pearl series, which had their own successful Nintendo DS video games, all released way back in 2006. Pikachu and Scorebunny can't take all the credit in a story inspired by mythology, so they will share the spotlight with the Legendary Pokemon Heatran, Azelf, Mespirit, Uxie, and, of course, Arceus himself.

RELATED: Pokemon Journeys: The (un)Astonishing Semi-Final Line-Up

The Legends

The Legendary Uxie represents knowledge, Mesprite emotion, and Azelf symbolizes willpower, and together they protect the Pokemon of the Sinnoh region. They are said to have been created by Arceus himself and share a strong connection with the Legendary time-manipulating Dialga and the space-distorting Palkia. Ash had previously helped The Lake Guardians during a Diamond & Pearl showdown against Team Galactic, but it seems this adorable psychic trio's problems are far from over.

Fans may also remember Heatran from Pokemon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life , as the temperamental larva-inspired legendary creature capable of leveling entire towns with its volcanic forces. As far as the story goes, only a Magma Rock can truly subdue this Fire/Steel-Type Pokemon , but maybe the charming psychic trio can work their magic if push comes to shove. The official trailer suggests that Arceus will also get involved, so things are likely to get quite out of hand if the big guns are getting called in.

Hello, Strangers

Brock, Dawn, and Cynthia will be tagging along on this trip down memory lane, as the Diamond & Pearl gang are finally reunited. Fans first met Dawn, the aspiring Pokemon Coordinator, when Piplup was introduced as a starter Pokemon, and she essentially became the second Misty replacement (after May.) Dawn gained many admirers by showing viewers the extravagant side of Pokemon Contests by adding a fashionable flare to these beauty pageants and is arguably the first "girly-girly" in the franchise.

Brock seems all grown-up now and struts his stuff either in a white lab coat, completely shirtless or with his iconic pink frilly apron in tow, suggesting that his cooking skills will also be put on full display. Maybe Brock has finally mastered the art of Dawn's infamous Poffin recipe or created his own version after years of experimentation. Last fans saw of Brock , he was pursuing his dreams of becoming a Pokemon Breeder but decided to become a Doctor instead; still following his nurturing passions - and conveniently ensuring Nurse Joy is never far from his side.

RELATED: Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's Third Legendary Needs to Connect With Terastallization

Cynthia has gained a significant following of her own since the Sinnoh Champion's success in the World Coronation Series as one of the reputable members of the Masters Eight. Cynthia's precise role in this mini-series is not quite clear, but her charm and style will undoubtedly dazzle viewers nonetheless, with Roserade eloquently glamming things up another notch too. Cynthia came to help out the last time The Lake Guardians were in trouble, so why should this time be any different?

The Team Rocket trio appears to be nowhere in sight, but Team Galactic has conveniently stepped in to cause some chaos as yet another Diamond & Pearl reference. Master Cyrus assumes his usual role as leader of the pack, and with the help of Saturn, Mars, and Jupiter, these evil-doers appear to have captured a Legendary Heatran to do their bidding. Team Galactic's goal? Why, to take over the world of course, and recreate the entire Universe by manipulating mystical portals and playing God, but unfortunately biting off way more than they can chew.

Conflicting Timelines

While Pokemon: The Arceus Chronicle s is a stand-alone mini-feature, the storyline appears to be relatively canon to the Pokemon Journeys' adventures due to Goh and Scorebunny's inclusion, although is likely not directly related to the World Coronation Series. Brock's lab coat and pink Pokemon also indicate a character development more in line with the current storyline, as the big career change was made in the Diamond & Pearl special episode.

According to the Japanese release date timeline, The Arceus Chronicles aired shortly after Pokemon Ultimate Journeys: The Series (Part 1), which will likely be available on Netflix later in 2022. So, even though Japan may be ahead of the rest of the world with their Pokemon updates, it seems that the overall global viewing experience corresponds quite eloquently. However, the Nintendo Switch version is intended as a prequel to the Diamond & Pearl edition, consequently leading Legends : Arceus on its own mission, not that anyone is complaining.

Pokemon: The Arceus Chronicle s will make its international Netflix debut on 23 September 2022.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus marks a new direction for the Pokémon series. Many people compare this more open-world style to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Critic and user reviews have been very positive overall, making this one of the best RPGs on the Nintendo Switch. Here's everything you need to know about the mould-breaking Pokémon game.

Pokemon Legends Box Art

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a new Pokémon game centered around exploration and discovery in ancient Sinnoh.

New gameplay aspects

On Jan. 13, The Pokémon Company released a 13-minute trailer that explains several aspects of Pokémon Legends: Arceus. Here's an explanation of everything shown in the trailer:

  • Hisui Region: Mt. Coronet is in the center of the Hisui region and surrounded by locations with distinct terrain, Pokémon, and foliage. This is the area that will later become known as the Sinnoh Region, as seen in Diamond and Pearl.
  • Wild Pokémon: Different Pokémon appear in the overworld depending on the time of day and weather. However, not all Pokémon are the same. Depending on their temperaments, they might be skittish and eager to run or aggressive. If you fail to catch it in your first sneak attempt, you'll need to send your own Pokémon out and fight it. Get its health down and then you can attempt to catch it again.
  • Items and Pokémon catching : Items can make it easier to acquire new Pokémon. For instance, Berries can distract them, which make catching a lot easier.
  • Hisui Region Pokédex: You are a member of the Survey Corps, which means you not only need to capture Pokémon to complete your Pokédex, but you also need to observe Pokémon performing certain moves or doing certain behaviors.
  • Traversing Hisui: In order to easily traverse the land, there are specific Pokémon you can ride in the air, water, or on land. Once you've unlocked them, you simply rotate through the list of special Pokémon and press the + button to change to a different riding Pokémon.
  • Jubilife Village: This is the main hub where you find Galaxy Team headquarters, stores, Pokémon trading posts, and your home. Not to mention, there are members of the Medical Corp, Security Corp, and Survey Corp here.
  • Missions and Requests: Missions are quests that help advance the plot while requests are sidequests given to you by Hisui residents. You'll be rewarded with items for completing them. The kinds of tasks you'll be given might be to see a specific Pokemon, capture a certain number, or find a specific item.
  • Pokémon Battles: These start after you've thrown your own Pokémon out at a Wild Pokémon. If you successfully snuck up to the wild Pokémon and hit them with your Pokemon's Poke Ball, you might even stun them and get an extra turn in before they attack. Battles are turn-based and you can use either Strong Style or Agile Style to attack.
  • Alpha Pokémon: These are larger than the others, have red eyes, and will take more work to take down. You'll need to use more strategies in order to defeat and capture them. However, if you capture them, they will be more powerful on your team.
  • Customization: The clothier at Jubilife Village allows you to purchase clothing so you can customize your avatar. More clothes unlock as you play. The Hairdresser also lets you adjust your hair color and hairstyles.
  • Noble Pokémon: These are special Pokémon in various areas. Something is putting them in a frenzy, but you can't just defeat them, you need to throw balms at them to calm them. Instead of attacking your Pokémon, they will attack you directly, so prepare to throw balms and attack. Once the Noble Pokémon lets down its guard, you can work on battling it with a Pokémon and capturing it.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a new Pokémon game set in the ancient Sinnoh region. In this era, people from all over the world have settled in Sinnoh to explore this new land. Receiving a partner Pokémon from a professor, you set off to capture every Pokémon and help create Sinnoh's first Pokédex.

This game has more of an open-world style to it that many have compared to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild . Even the minimalistic piano music feels like it took cues from Link's mold-breaking adventure.

What's new in Pokémon Legends: Arceus?

Almost everything, really. Pokémon Legends: Arceus is a Breath of the Wild-inspired take on the traditional Pokémon formula, but it has plenty of mechanics to make it its own creation. Sinnoh has been transformed into an open world, and you're free to explore the region's untouched mountains, beaches, and forests.

You can hunt for Pokémon much like you did in the Wild area of Pokémon Sword and Shield , but now you can toss a Poké Ball right at the Pokémon and capture them. The movement has been improved, and battles also seem to be tweaked. Now you can engage wild Pokémon alongside your own Pokémon. All these changes have worked together to create a very new experience, making Legends: Arceus one of the best RPGs on the Nintendo Switch .

Who are the starter Pokémon?

Pokemon Legends Starter

Every new region comes with new starter Pokémon. In Pokémon Legends: Arceus, however, you come across some familiar faces. The starters include Rowlet from Generation VII, Cyndaquil from Generation II, and Oshawott from Generation V. The mix of starters were captured and brought to Sinnoh by a traveling professor.

Are there regional variants?

There sure are. Within this Hisui region there are Hisuian variants and evolutions of previously known Pokemon. Here's a small taste of what some of them look like.

Pokemon Legends Arceus Riding Wyrdeer

Yes! Players can fly with the help of Hisuian Braviary, cross water with the help of Basculegion, and simply ride around the overworld on the back of Wyrdeer. To call these Pokémon to you, you'll whip out your trusty Celestica Flute.

After receiving a mysterious instrument called the Celestica Flute, you can summon Pokémon like Wyrdeer, Basculegion, and Hisuian Braviary. Riding them will allow you to move faster on land, cross bodies of water, or soar through the skies. https://t.co/rkdErKNDEZ pic.twitter.com/kUNKWrQYZ2 After receiving a mysterious instrument called the Celestica Flute, you can summon Pokémon like Wyrdeer, Basculegion, and Hisuian Braviary. What's the story in Pokémon Legends: Arceus?

Pokemon Legends Bidoof

This RPG takes place years in the past, even before the idea of a Pokémon Trainer or Pokémon League even existed. You're tasked with building the region's first Pokédex and uncovering the mystery of Arceus along the way.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus Wardens & noble Pokémon

Pokemon Legends Arceus Wardens

Instead of running around collecting gym badges, players go to areas where special noble Pokémon reside. There is a dedicated Warden looking after each one by providing food and keeping the area safe. However, noble Pokémon are becoming frenzied for some reason and it will be your job to calm them with balms.

Spoiler : Click the link below to see a noble Pokémon.

Kleavor is a Bug/Rock type. It evolves from Scyther if you give it special minerals.

Basculegion is a Water/Ghost type. It's supposedly "possessed by souls of other Basculin" that died on their way upstream.

Wyrdeer is a special Stantler evolution native only to the Hisuian region.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus battle system

Pokemon Legends Arcues Battle

Not every Pokémon in Legends: Arceus needs to be battled to catch it. When you approach, some Pokémon will be friendly, others will hide, and others will need to be weakened before you can catch them. Players throw a Poké Ball with one of their Pokémon at a wild creature to start a battle. The battle then begins right there in the overworld without going into a separate battle mode.

The combat order is determined by either Pokémon's stats, including Speed and status conditions. A box displays in the upper right corner, letting you know the order in which Pokémon will be able to attack.

Agile Style and Strong Style

Pokemon Legends Arceus Strong Style Lucario

As with the core Pokémon games, each Pokémon can remember up to four moves at a time. However, in Legends: Arceus, each of these moves can be performed in one of two styles: Agile Style or Strong style.

  • Strong Style : Increases power but reduces action speed.
  • Agile Style : Increases speed but reduces power.

You'll need to use these styles accordingly to get the upper hand on your opponents. For example, Strong Style is the way to go if you think you can knock out the other Pokémon in one hit. Meanwhile, if you need to sneak in a few more attacks before your opponent can strike, you'll want to use Agile Style.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus character customization and shops

Pokemon Legends Arceus Clothing

We might be in ancient Sinnoh, but that doesn't mean there aren't any classy clothes or items to deck your character out in. Plus, there are a number of shops in Jubilife Village to help you stand out.

  • Hairdresser and clothier : Change your hairdo and get the perfect clothes to match your style.

Pokemon Sinnoh Growlith

  • Photography studio : Grab your favorite Pokémon and say cheese! You get to choose your poses, backgrounds, faces, and more.

Pokemon Legends Arceus General Store

  • General store and craftworks : Get all of the items you need for your journey here. If it isn't sold then you might have to make it yourself.

Pokemon Legends Arceus Pokemon Pasture

  • Pokémon pastures : There aren't any computers in ancient Sinnoh, so you'll leave all of the Pokémon you've caught that aren't in your party in the pastures. You can visit them at any time and see how they're doing.

What is gameplay like?

Pokemon Legends Arceus Galaxy Expedition Objectives

Players are out to complete the first-ever Pokédex by working with the Galaxy Expedition Team. You'll be given research tasks, and fulfilling them earns you points. As you earn more points, you'll move up in the rankings and be able to explore new locations.

Whenever you're away from Jubilife Village, you'll be able to stop by Base Camps to rest up, buy supplies, or craft items. Just like Pokémon centers in core Pokémon games, if you faint in battle, you'll wake up at Base camp.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus crafting

Pokemon Legends Arceus Crafting

You read that right. Crafting is being brought into the mix in Pokémon Legends: Arceus. You can craft different Poké Balls, Smoke Bombs, and other items with the help of materials found in the wild. This also means there are plenty of items to pick up as you wander around ancient Sinnoh. Keep plenty of space available in your storage so you can gather all of the materials you need.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus Arc Phone

Pokemon Legends Arceus Arc Phone

You'll receive the Arc Phone near the beginning of your journey (just ignore the fact that it's basically an iPhone in ancient feudal times). This device helps you keep track of missions and requests and also allows you to view a map of the area.

How many Pokémon will be in the game?

Pokemon Legends Battle

There are a grand total of 242 Pokémon in Legends: Arceus . Considering that Game Freak has created nearly 900 all together, this is just a small dip in the barrel. However, the game does a good job of balancing out different types and providing a smattering of characters from different generations.

Pokemon Arceus

Breaking away from Pokémon tradition, there is only be one version of the game. This means that you do not need to trade with someone else in order to complete your Pokédex.

Pokemon Legends Village

This game breaks away from several Pokémon traditions, however, you can still trade with others who also have their own version of the game. This is done at the in-game trading posts.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s Title Hints At An Exploration Of Kalos’ Brutal History

  • Legends: Z-A may dive into Kalos' dark past, hinting at a connection to the Ultimate Weapon's devastating history.
  • The title suggests a historical exploration, possibly delving into Mega Evolution's origins and AZ's role.
  • The game's narrative might focus on uncovering relics and investigating the war's aftermath, offering a different approach.

The very title of Pokémon Legends: Z-A appears to be hinting at a significant aspect of the game's plot despite the level of mystery currently surrounding it. Although the next Pokémon Legends game is set in Lumiose City , it could still dive into the history of the entire Kalos region, a theory that could be confirmed by a certain interpretation of the game’s name. Moreover, given the particularly brutal history of Kalos in the franchise, this could make Legends: Z-A one of the darkest Pokémon games yet .

It is no secret that Kalos has a terrible history behind it. The climax of Pokémon X and Y ’s plot hinges on Lysandre’s plan to unleash the Ultimate Weapon, a millennia-old weapon of mass destruction that claimed countless lives. While the protagonist averts catastrophe, the many graves of Pokémon lining Route 10 are a reminder that those living in the distant past were not so lucky. Furthermore, although Legends: Z-A ’s trailer does not reference this terrible time, nor the events that preceded it, there is still a clear chain of logic connecting Kalos’ ancient war to the new Pokémon game.

Pokmon Legends: Z-A Theory - Its Story Is Based On A Real Historical Time Period

Pokémon legends: z-a’s title suggests it looks back on kalos’ history.

The ‘Legends’ title implies an exploration of a region’s history , especially with Legends: Arceus revolving around Sinnoh/Hisui’s lore . Of course, any historical angle on Kalos is sure to at least mention the war that led to the Ultimate Weapon, and ‘Z-A’, being a reverse of the usual ‘A-Z’, seems to imply ‘going from the end to the beginning’ . With Mega Evolution’s teased return, this could mean that the game’s plot will include an effort to uncover the origins of Mega Evolution at some point after the conclusion of the war (thereby avoiding directly depicting such a conflict).

Of course, ‘Z-A’ is also a reversal of AZ, the name of the ancient king turned immortal wanderer , the person responsible for the creation of the Ultimate Weapon. Both AZ’s name and Z-A ’s title are easy to interpret as a reflection of Pokémon X and Y ’s own alphabetic naming scheme, but when placed together, the resemblance is too clear to be coincidental. Given the Ultimate Weapon’s effect on AZ, he could even be used as a primary source regarding the events of the war no matter when Legends: Z-A takes place, providing a direct link to the past.

The Ultimate Weapon was originally designed to resurrect AZ’s Floette, granting both immortality in the process before being converted to a more destructive purpose after his success.

These are two distinct ways in which the title of Pokémon Legends: Z-A can be interpreted as a reference to the long-ago war that consumed Kalos . Combined with the precedent already set by Legends: Arceus , it seems safe to say that this period of the Pokémon world’s history will have a notable effect on the events unfolding in Lumiose City. With battles in Legends: Z-A undoubtedly involving Mega Evolution, its advent may even be a main plot point. This would naturally raise questions for the characters involved, and the key to finding the answers lies in tales of the war.

Pokmon Legends: Arceus Review - More Than A Trainer Journey

Legends: z-a’s trailer matches a more modern setting for the main plot.

With all that being said, however, Lumiose’s redevelopment seems semi-modern at the very least, quite unlike Hisui. Aside from AZ and any Mega Stones, it is possible that very few relics of the war will directly appear in the game, especially with the Ultimate Weapon itself buried in a completely different location (beneath Geosenge Town). Therefore, a more research-based storyline could be what is intended regarding the war and Mega Evolution, with the protagonist discovering records of the past over the course of the game.

Pokmon Legends: Arceus Easter Egg Was Teasing Legends: Z-A All Along

This would be a very different approach to Legends: Arceus, uncovering history as opposed to living it. However, that does not mean that Legends: Z-A would be uninteresting in doing so. An archaeological spin could be very intriguing in its own way and would be easy to integrate into the known narrative. If Lumiose is undergoing redevelopment, it is reasonable to assume that construction work could uncover previously unknown objects buried under the city. The investigation of such mysterious artifacts could easily provide an inciting incident for a larger plot.

Naturally, this would be an excellent way to introduce new Mega Stones over the course of the game. The list of Pokémon known to Mega Evolve could quickly grow through such inclusions, making it a perfect addition to the franchise now that the mechanic will finally be part of active development again. But at the same time, written records, perhaps on stone tablets or other such objects well-suited to withstand the test of time, could also be discovered. Such objects would be a very natural way to slowly introduce new insights into both Mega Evolution and the events of King AZ’s rule.

The History Of Mega Evolution Is Best Explained At A Distance

It is also worth noting that the lore surrounding Mega Evolution does include some long-standing mysteries , which Pokémon Legends: Z-A is well-positioned to clear up. Most crucially is the question of their precise origin; Professor Sycamore claims that Mega Stones are Evolution Stones irradiated by the Ultimate Weapon, but Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire suggest that they were originally meteorites instead and were transformed through Rayquaza’s power. Moreover, Sycamore presents Mega Evolution as a new discovery, despite Mega Stones having existed for three thousand years at this point in the canonical timeline.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A could provide a definitive answer to puzzles such as these whilst also providing new details on AZ’s war in a relatively palatable way. Although Pokémon have been shown being used in war before, the sheer scale of AZ’s actions with the Ultimate Weapon could potentially constitute a massacre. Even if not, a game set in the midst of the Kalos war would almost certainly depict Pokémon being drained of their life to power the weapon, which is uncharacteristically distressing imagery for the franchise. A slightly more distant viewpoint, looking back in time, would allow the game to soften such concepts.

The story of Kalos’ war is one of immense bloodshed and lost life, which in some ways makes it an excellent backdrop for a new Pokémon Legends game. On the other hand, directly depicting such horrors would not fit the tone of Pokémon , even with the existing darker aspects of the franchise. A more retrospective view of Kalos’ history makes much more sense, which would make the title Pokémon Legends: Z-A especially fitting. The name seems to directly invoke looking backward, undoubtedly shedding new light on Kalos’ past as a result.
