This factory-raced Porsche 911 Safari survived two decades in the African wilderness

The Porsche 911 Dakar might be the latest all-terrain enthusiasts’ darling to come out of Stuttgart, but half a century earlier, Porsche were cutting their teeth in the African rally arena, eager to translate their tarmac-based prowess into success off the beaten track. However, their choice for the basis of these early competition cars might come as a surprise, because they weren’t just adding thicker tread to a common-or-garden 911, they were honing their very finest and fastest rear-engined weapons of choice. 

The year was 1973, and Porsche were in the process of delivering their first ultra-desirable 911 Carrera RS 2.7s. Today, any Carrera RS 2.7 would send a porschaholic into a tizzy, but they weren’t all equal, and a mere 200 units were built to M471 “Sport” specification, commonly referred to as Lightweights.

The car design of the restored 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa named Safari was undertaken by automotive enterprise Galpin Motors and dealer Porsche Santa Clarita as the duo’s entry to the 2022 Porsche Classic Restoration Challenge at the Werks Reunion in Monterey. The Safari design of the 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa wears a lime-green paint coaxed in white, red, and orange stripes whose design is inspired by racing cars. The upgrades also include a Stage 4 Elephant Racing Safari suspension,, MCS coil overs, and RSR swaybars.

Additional lights on the bonnet

The car steals the limelight from the get-go thanks to its color, but other details featured in the restoration affirm the revamped design of a classic vehicle. Four additional lights are fitted on the car’s bonnet that blast extra light during night driving. Bumper holes add to the racing spirit the car tries to invoke, and the roadster car also has auxiliary lights. The all-terrain tires installed allows the car to weather any kinds of bumps and roughs on the road, making it easy to maneuver.

Green exterior for the leather interior

Stepping inside the car, leather carpets the design of the car with touches of lime-green to continue the exterior look. A look of class meets high-speed cruising seems to be a theme of the car’s restoration. The debut of the in-house restored  1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa Safari by Galpin Motors and Porsche Santa Clarita won the People’s Choice Award during the event in Monterey. Porsche Santa Clarita calls the model ‘a ground-up restoration with a twist, one that has been turned into a Safari off-road capable fun haver.’

2023 Porsche 911 Safari spy shots and video: High-riding sports car hits the 'Ring

Perhaps the best sign the crossover craze has taken a step too far, Porsche is out testing a high-riding 911.

Porsche hasn't confirmed plans to launch a high-riding 911, though the automaker's sales and marketing chief, Detlev von Platen, said in a 2018 interview that such a car “ could be a good idea .” He even said such a car could be launched as a limited-edition model.

The testers are riding on much taller suspension than normal, which stands out in our latest shots thanks to a prototype for an updated 911 Carrera also present. The testers are also fitted with widened wheel arches and on some of them there is a prominent rear spoiler whose design has never been seen before. Some of the earlier testers also had thick foam lining the wheel arches, a feature typically seen when testing suspension systems. It helps the engineers determine how close the wheels get to the vehicle body. It's possible the foam was also added to hide whatever suspension setup was being used.

Porsche has been down this road before. Recall, the automaker launched the 911 SC Safari rally car in 1978. Porsche also built a trio of 911-based 953 rally cars which it entered in the Dakar Rally and eventually took home the victory.

The popularity of those early rally cars has led to some companies offering Safari-style conversions for old 911s . Several famous Porsche tuning houses, such as Gemballa , Ruf and Singer , have also teased their own modern successors.

Porsche itself investigated the idea of a modern 911 Safari with a secret concept developed in 2012 . Known as the 911 Vision Safari, the concept was based on the 991-generation 911 but never ended up receiving the green light for production. It looks like this won't be the case with the current 992-generation 911.

The 911 Vision Safari concept featured raised suspension and flared wheel arches, just like we see on these testers. It also had underbody protection and roof-mounted lights.

A Safari-style 911 from Porsche would likely be aimed at buyers in markets like China and Russia, where drivers are often faced with poor road conditions that make it difficult to daily a low-slung sports car, hence the popularity of performance crossovers in those markets. We’re sure a few would turn up in the U.S., too, given the popularity of high-riding models here. Heck, it could even prove popular in Porsche's home market of Germany where parking with two wheels up on the curb is often necessary. Currently we expect the car to be revealed in 2022 as a 2023 model. Lamborghini is also working on a similar concept, using the Huracan as the basis .

This 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa Safari Won the People's Choice Award At Werks Renunion

The classic, air-cooled 911 has been modernized in a very subtle manner while scoring all the classic design cues you would expect from a 911 Safari

Werks Reunion is one of the biggest events sanctioned by the Porsche Club of America. The Werks Reunion at Monterey that took place on August 19th saw plenty of unique Porsche cars, but the People’s Choice Award was taken by a tastefully-modified, 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa Safari. Despite the mouthful of a name, the car is truly a one-off example. Galpin Motors was more than happy to share the details of this unique example of an air-cooled 911.

A collection of classic 911 design cues

This unique build started life as chassis number 161 of only 246 road-going 911 Targa models sold in the US. It retains the Targa top, but has received the iconic, ducktail rear spoiler, ala 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS, which the late Paul Walker owned . Another classic element is the Lime (Birch) Green that was chosen for the exterior color. It is a color that Porsche started offering as early as 1969.

The high-impact share of green is often referred to by fans as one of the “Skittles” colors. The same color was also available on the Carrera 2.7 RS. Unique to the car is the custom front bumper and skid plate. As a last touch, the classic 911 feature 1970s stripes on the exterior and roll bar, and let's not forget the obligatory for any off-road sports car, hood-mounted rally headlights.

The interior has been redone in orange leather and features a revised, OEM climate-control system. The rear seats have been removed as a means to save weight, and there is also a period-correct Porsche audio system that now features an integrated navigation system.

The right amount of modern touches

We say that about a lot of highly-finished resto-mods, but the joint project between Porsche Santa Clarita, California, and Galpin Auto Sports has truly resulted in a one-off masterpiece. The biggest feat of the 1974 Porsche 911 Carrera Targa Safari is that it has received the right amount of modern touches without sacrificing the car’s classic character. The car retains its original, 2.7-liter, naturally-aspirated, flat-six engine, but it has received some subtle modifications, among which are bigger pistons (92 mm versus the stock 90 mm). The result is 180 horsepower (134 kilowatts) versus the stock, U.S.-spec model’s 143 horsepower (107 kilowatts).

Visually, the most distinctive upgrade is the roll cage, which adds safety and rigidity to the classic Porsche. The brakes come from a Porsche 986 Boxster and the suspension is a Stage 4 Elephant Racing Safari System with RSR, and hollow sway bars. There are also MCS coilovers and BFGoodrich All-terrain T/A K02 tires. Last but not least, the whole steering system has been completely overhauled.

When asked about the built, Galpin Motors President and Chief Operating Office, Beau Boeckmann, said “Our goal with this Targa was to build something that was modified like it might be in period with just the right amount of modern touches and performance. We can’t wait to spend some time in the dirt with it.” While Porsche, itself, has finally decided to grace us with their own, 992-based Porsche 911 Safari , it is builds like these that have kept the idea of an off-road-focused 911 alive all these years. The tastefully-modified classic Porsche is a testimony to Galpin Motors’ expertise as the company wins, for the second time in a row. Words don’t make the car justice so feel free to take a look at the images and appreciate the pedantry and perfection behind the build.

The Safari 911 Is the Ultimate City Car

All the benefits of a pickup, none of the drawbacks.

The Ford Raptor has a problem: it’s monstrous. While it makes a lot of sense on the Baja Peninsula or bashing through snow outside of Park City, it makes no sense whatsoever in the city. For all of Los Angeles’s sprawl, it’s a city shockingly devoid of space. Designed around normal sized cars, not behemoth trucks, and with many garages and driveways designed 50, 60 years ago, LA isn’t ready for the Raptor.

I should know: I daily drove one for three years until I ditched it for being just too damn big. That’s not to say Ford hasn’t engineered some practicality into the thing; to the contrary, they absolutely have. In major cities—LA, New York, Boston, Philly, and DC specifically come to mind—the crumbling infrastructure has made a daily drive more like a jaunt down an off-road trail. Lazily applied patches of asphalt combined with potholes and wobbling expansion joints, no doubt thanks to fifty years of increasingly heavy cars, take their toll on your wheels, tires, suspension, and spine. Although parking a Raptor was even more of a pain in the ass than filling up the hot tub-sized tank with Premium every week, negotiating bad roads was always a pleasure.

Herein lies the dilemma: off-roading is typically the realm of trucks. Trucks do not have good dynamics. Trucks are big, ungainly things, meant for hauling large amounts of people and stuff. What do you do if you want the suspension of a baja truck to deal with the garbage roads of the city, but not the size or efficiency drawbacks? The answer, of course, is a rally car.

Conventional wisdom says that if you raise a sports car four inches above its factory ride height and install knobby BF Goodrich KO2 tires, you will not exactly improve it. This is especially true if you listen to the opinions of commenters on Bring-A-Trailer. Leh Keen, the mind behind The Keen Project, disagrees.

Leh, a professional racing driver and lifelong Porsche enthusiast, has spent the last two years building the first fifteen examples of his Keen Project Safari 911. Back in 2016, I had the privilege of traveling to his weekend home in the remote mountains of North Carolina, to have a go in Safari #1. To call the experience transformative would be an understatement. On a closed, single-track road, a couple flaggers short of a proper rally stage, I learned a very valuable lesson: a car with great dynamics on the road will also have great dynamics on a loose surface, especially with the proper tires.

Although nervous, within 15 or 20 minutes I found myself doing huge slides in Leh’s personal car, a foot or two from very large, potentially very expensive pine trees. To my utter shock, the 911 turned in harder, rotated better, and oversteered smoother than, literally any rally car I’ve ever driven. Subaru STIs, even on the correct tires, were utter pigs by comparison. Furthermore, because of the loose surface, the “widowmaker snapback” one warns dentists about when driving old 911s at the limit is entirely absent.

On dirt, the Safari 911 made absolute sense; it was a pure rally car, except built entirely for fun and not for winning races. Even better was what happened when we got to tarmac: it was still a 911. That’s not to say it will be setting any lateral G-loading records, or even that it necessarily handles or steers as sharply as it did when it left the factory. It doesn't. However, the ride quality is superb, especially over uneven pavement, the eyeline is still that of a sports car, and you don’t really notice the extra height. Even if you did, looking out over those quad rally lights stuffed in between the pontoon fenders either makes you smile, or reveals you have no soul at all.

Fundamentally, it still feels like a 911, even if mildly numbed down on the road. The beautiful greenhouse, driving position close to the windshield and dash, the perfect seating position, the sound and feel of the engine and way it pushes you, rather than pulls you down the road like only a 911 can, even the effortlessness of a cruise down the road in top gear; all of this is still present here, despite the off-road modifications. Sure, it loses some of its track-worthiness, and I’m not sure it’s the perfect choice for a blast through the (paved) canyons, either. That's not why I bought it. I bought it to navigate the urban jungle on a daily basis, take on road trips, including skiing in the winter, and the occasional off-road jaunt. It’s nearly perfect.

To get to this point, Mr. Keen combines his creative ideology and sense of setup with a handful of extremely talented Atlanta-area subcontractors to do the physical work on the car. He can arrange a donor car, a “G-Body” 911 from 1979 to 1989, or you can provide your own. In my case, I had a specific need: the G50 transmission only offered from ’87-’89, as it has a much more direct shift feel than the 915 transmission used in earlier models. You also get an extra 200cc of displacement from the 3.2 “Carrera” engine over the earlier 911 SC models. My car, a 1987 two-owner Carrera with the optional Whale Tail, burgundy leather, air conditioning, and a sunroof, is a cleaner example than most start with. Most folks also get a full repaint, something my car, in a spectacularly '80s shade of Cassis Red, did not require.

In order to make the 3.2-liter engine a bit more lively, I had the folks at BBi Autosport in Huntington Beach install a light flywheel and clutch assembly, SSI heat exchanger headers, a Dansk vintage-style muffler (All Keen Project Safari 911s use this), a Wevo Short Shift Kit, and a Wavetrac Limited-Slip Differential. They also went through the fuel and ignition system, flushed all the fluids, changed the filters, and updated many of the fittings and hoses.

From there, the car goes on a truck to Keen in Atlanta. First, Bryson Richards and his team at Classic Livery of Atlanta get down to bodywork. They install the signature rally light pod, painted to match, and rally-style front and rear bumpers. The bash bars and skid plates are functional, and give the car a menacing look in the rearview. Classic Livery also handles the interior, which for me, means Cobra GTS Classic bucket seats, RS lightweight door cards, and a Prototipo Wheel, all trimmed in burgundy leather, burgundy carpet, and City Bus fabric.

Yes, actual city bus fabric. Some folks say they want a crazy interior, but what they really mean is tartan or houndstooth or something. I live for an aggressive interior. We kept the original dash and door uppers, as they were in mint condition, as well as the black leather headliner, equally mint. The rear seats are (optionally) deleted, and a vintage-style four-point roll bar is welded in. Since the car is meant for daily driving, Clarion hooked up one of their M508 single-DIN head units with USB charging and Bluetooth, some 6.5 inch coaxial speakers for the door cards, and 6x9 inch speakers for the rear decklid.

From Classic Livery the car goes to Goldcrest Motorsports, who handle the installation of the Elephant Racing Safari Suspension and do the final sorting of the whole package before it's delivered to the customer. Because Keen focuses on a period-style build wherever possible, the suspension is not a full coil-over conversion. Rather, it retains the torsion bar-style rear suspension, just with better, long-travel shocks, different swaybars, new ‘PolyBronze’ bushings, and of course, the BF Goodrich K02 tires (the same tires used on the Ford Raptor) mounted on (American-made) BRAID RSR-style 16-inch alloy wheels.

The idea is to find a balance between off-road performance and street drivability; remember this is meant to be a daily driver with off-road capabilities; it’s not a racecar or a trophy truck. And that’s not just for me—Leh uses his personal Safari for airport runs, six-hour round trip drives to his weekend house, and to go to the grocery store, then also to hit the trails in the woods when he wants to get a bit sideways, an area where the Safari 911 particularly excels.

If there are any downsides, they are minimal in comparison to having one of the coolest and most practical daily driver sports cars around: the tight ‘rally mirrors,’ a standard part of the Keen Project package may be great for sailing the car in between trees at 100 mph on a stage rally, but they make parallel parking a nightmare, even with the convex ‘bifocals’ attached to them. And because of the lightened flywheel and aftermarket Steve Wong chip, the car doesn’t particularly like to idle when ice cold. Without the inertia of the stock flywheel keeping things rotating, it will die if you simply press the clutch in while driving, rather than gently returning to idle. The only real solution for this is to warm the car up for five minutes or so before the first drive of the day.

I absolutely love driving my Safari 911. Although I have yet to do any real off-roading (Leh recommended a few hundred street miles, then a thorough once-over to make sure everything is nice and tight after installation, before doing any real abusive driving), this is the most fun petrol-powered city car I’ve ever driven. Like a Raptor, speed bumps are best taken at full throttle; the car skips over them like a stone. Potholes need not be avoided, and dips in the road become jump opportunities. There’s some additional body roll along with the extra travel, but the handling remains predictable and the manual steering, direct. With the reduced rear grip of the off-road tires, it’s even possible to get predictable, mild oversteer at fairly low speeds, on tarmac. I’ve parked it up on curbs, driven it over downed trees in the road, and taken driveways straight on that would require gnashed teeth and sweaty palms in a stock height 911. And the whole time, I’ve never for a second felt like I wasn’t piloting a performance-oriented 911. It’s got the sound, the response, the look and feel you want from a Porsche, just pointed in a different direction and cranked up to 13. I even watched as the valets shifted a Bentley GT a few feet over, so I could have front row parking at Mastro’s.

This, not the Nurburgring-tuned Ford Focus RS, is the urban rally car experience I’ve really been looking for. While the rest of the world gravitates toward SUV’s, trucks, and luxo-crossovers to deal with modern urban and suburban driving conditions, the pervasive attitude is that cars are dead, and if you can’t beat ‘em, to just join ‘em, with something like a Macan Turbo, as much of a luxury rally car as you can buy today. Well I think you can beat them, have your air-cooled cake and eat it too. Universality, thy name is Keen Project Safari, and it’s the perfect go-anywhere, do anything sports car for today’s urban jungle. It’s the best of air-cooled, the best of Raptor, and the best sense of humor, in one vintage 911-sized package.

Porsche took two specially modified 911s to Chile. One even drove 20,000 feet up the side of a volcano.

Porsche put the 911 to a new and almost unimaginable test. The sports car team went to Chile to drive up the side of the highest volcano in the world.

This PR stunt showcases how rugged the modern 992 generation of the Porsche 911 can be with the right modifications, and it also elevates the excitement level for the soon-to-be-revealed 2023 911 Safari, although Porsche has not officially announced that production model yet.

Latest in Long History of Off-Road 911s

The Porsche 911 started its off-pavement racing career way back in 1971. Porsche entered five cars in the 4,000-mile-long East African Safari Rally that year, and only one of the five managed to finish.

The off-road 911 really took off when Porsche built the 953, which was a heavily modified 4×4 version of the 911. That car entered and won the 1984 Paris-Dakar Rally and was the basis for the legendary 959.

When the 959 followed up that 953 racing car, the roadgoing AWD Porsche was born. The 911 got its first AWD system in 1988, badged Carrera 4, and since then the option for all-wheel drive has been a key part of 911 performance.

Porsche 911 Volcano Climb Preparation

For this Chilean challenge, Porsche started with two copies of its 911 Carrera 4S. They deliver 443 horsepower from their factory-stock turbocharged flat-six engines and are equipped with the available seven-speed manual transmission .

Porsche’s R&D crew in Weissach then worked with Romain Dumas Motorsport to create these volcano-climbing beasts. First, the cars were fitted with roll cages, carbon seats, and full harnesses. Safety was paramount, running to extremes in the remote region.

Then Porsche fitted a massively raised suspension and portal axles. Portal axles add a gearbox at each corner and lower the wheel centers compared to the axle centers. The effect is more ground clearance, and these Volcano 911s now have 13.7 inches of it. That’s half an inch more than a Ford Raptor pickup.

New gear ratios were picked to allow for more gentle throttle inputs at lower speeds. The new gears also work well to help spin the big tires. Porsche didn’t say the size, but we can see Cooper Discoverer STT Pro and BFG All-Terrain tires in the photos.

Extremely modified bodywork does its best to cover the tire package. The bumpers have been cut away to let them clear terrain, and massive air inlets where the rear side glass used to live help the engine breathe at these great heights. An aramid fiber undertray lets the 911 slide over rocks when things get a little too hairy.

The last big change is a bit of a mystery. Porsche calls the device the “Warp-Connecter” and says it’s a mechanical link that makes wheel loads constant when the suspension flexes. It sounds like a center diff-locking device accompanied by manual lockers in the front and rear axles.

20,000 Feet Challenges Car and Driver

The trek was far from your ordinary test session. Porsche brought the cars to 19,708 feet above sea level. At that height, the team needed to bring its own accommodations . They also had to cope with half the oxygen you’d find near the ocean.

Endurance racer Romain Dumas drove one of the two 911s and was the team leader. He drove his rally-ready 911 up the side of the volcano. The cars were stopped not by a lack of air, but when they reached walls of ice and snow, they couldn’t get through.

“This was a truly memorable and special moment in a place that’s both beautiful and brutal at the same time,” he said. “I guess the only machines anywhere in the world higher than us today were aircraft!”

Porsche says the point was to show off what the 911 was capable of. We know the real reason for this impressive PR stunt is to tease and get people excited about the forthcoming 2023 911 Safari, Porsche’s first consumer-available Safari-style sports car.

While they haven’t officially announced such a production model, they have long teased it. And we have it on good authority that it will be revealed at the 2022 LA Auto Show  in late November.

1984 Porsche 911 Carrera Gets ‘The Safari Treatment’

It went from a few personal touches to a bespoke build.

Enter, stage right. ‘Willy’ began life as a 1984 Porsche 911 3.2 Carrera purchased by Andy Kilcoyne in March of 2018. He is the director of operations for Kelly-Moss, a world-renowned company which specializes in custom, frame-up and resto-mod builds. The story begins a few months before, however, when Hoonigans Larry Chen and Will Roegge were shooting the VICCI Safari car across a frozen lake in Wisconsin.

The photoshoot was not far from the Kelly-Moss headquarters, and so the duo met up with Andy and connected over drifting, burnouts, and other car talks. When Will listed his 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera at a reasonable price, Andy jumped on the opportunity to take over.

“It didn’t take much convincing for me to give this Carrera the Safari treatment. If you’ve ever driven one, you’d understand why,” Andy explains.

This 1984 Porsche 911 was actually a grey market car that was legally imported into the States; it lived most of its life in the South, which made it an even greater candidate for such a bespoke build. The original plan, however, was to merely add a few personal touches and quickly flip it around. Though, with the creative mind of Andy and the Kelly-Moss team, that didn’t quite happen. This may be the most understated and modest Safari built to come out of the Kelly-Moss HQ, but it’s still over the top and a major head-turner. Over the course of approximately 10 months, each part of this Porsche was taken apart, replaced, renewed, rebuilt, or reimagined with the end goal in sight. The precision to detail and commitment to the Safari build is evident with every small part adding up to the larger picture: an outrageous German sports car.

Noteworthy features include: a complete 360-degree repaint; a KMR modified stock aluminum front bumper; a custom aluminum lower valance; 30-inch Black Oak LED curved front light bar and a 30-inch curved rear light bar; a 40-inch combo spot/flood curved light bar on the roof; Hella Rallye horns; 17-inch BRAID Fuchs replica wheels; 9elevent LED headlights with DRLs; a KMR custom full roll cage; Recaro leather seats; and a roof rack to handle heavy loads.

This 1984 Porsche 911 Carrera has 4.5 hours on the entire build. If you put this car near another 911 or 911 Safari, you will immediately notice the subtle and unique details that truly set this project apart from the rest. This build focused on function over aesthetics, as is consistent with all the cars that have the honor of leaving Kelly-Moss. This ‘Willy’ Porsche speaks more to Andy’s personality, rather than following the loud and flashy language of Safari projects that had come before his. Either way, it’s a remarkable vehicle that was taken to new heights to become a conversation starter in its own right.

Front Struts

Front Swaybar Mount Reinforcement

Chassis failure around the front swaybar mounts is a common problem.

The stock type through-body swaybar mounts attach to a single layer of sheet metal. It’s prone to flexing, cracking and failure. Reinforce proactively to prevent failure using our doubler plate . This reinforces the area, distributing the load to prevent cracking.

Rear Swaybar Mounts

Factory rear swaybar mounts are simply not up to the task. Originally designed for the lightweight 16mm diameter swaybars equipped on the cars in 1965, these flimsy sheet metal bits fail regularly even in street use. When used with stiffer swaybars or the added load of off-road driving, it’s just a matter of time to failure.

These can be replaced with our sturdy solid swaybar mounts . These are much stronger than factory parts and are pretty much bullet proof.

Rear Torsion Tube

Another common failure point is the area around the rear spring plate mounts. These commonly develop fatigue cracks around the welds that secure the mounting bosses to the chassis. Pre-galvanized cars are further prone to rust in this area. Our doubler plate reinforces this entire area , distributing the load and preventing failure.

Rear Shock Top

The 911 chassis was originally designed to use torsion bar springs. The rear shock tops and the crossmember that holds them where designed to carry the damper loads alone, and not the full weight of the car. Cars converted to a coilover suspension further load this area with the full vehicle weight and should be reinforced. Safari cars that retain torsion bars but will be driven hard are also advise to reinforce this area. Our shock tower reinforcement kit makes this easy.

Suspension Travel and Geometry

Safari struts also correct toe curve by moving the tie rod end back to a correct relationship relative to the lower control arm. This keeps the tie rod in the center of it’s angular range of travel at the elevated safari height, avoiding binding and breakage.

Lift Height and Tire Selection

Two Popular Tire Choices

BFG A/T 215/65-16 – These have a diameter of 27 inches, putting the hubs about 1 inch higher than stock. These are the largest size tires that can reasonably be fit to the 911 chassis without major modification. The rear bolts right on, the front require trimming of the lower valence area.

These tires visually provide the big-tire, off road look. They provide the highest height and ground clearance. On the downside the large diameter raises effective gearing, impacting acceleration and torque to the ground. Added rotational inertial and diameter challenge the stock brakes and require a heavier pedal effort. Rally Tires These run on 15″ wheels and have a diameter of 26″, putting the hubs about 1/2″ higher than stock.

Still a large tire visually just dialed back a bit from the BFGs. The smaller diameter provides superior acceleration, braking and handling – relative to the taller tire.

Coilover vs Torsion Bar

If the torsion bar is twisted too far, beyond its yield point, it will be permanently deformed. That’s another way of saying the car will start sagging down. Continue twisting and the bar will break. The maximum angular twist that can be tolerated without deforming is a function of the torsion bar diameter. Thinner bars can twist more than thicker bars. Thin bars also make for a softer suspension.

In the absence of bump stops, the suspension will bottom out metal-on-metalome, and something will break sooner rather than later.

Suspension Bushings

All in rubber is the best choice for most safari builds.

For this reason, we recommend adjustable swaybars for all safari builds.

We Correct the Geometry… Properly

Just as lowering a car on coil overs changes its handling and braking behavior, raising its center of gravity presents a corollary set of challenges. In order to optimize your 911’s performance both on and off road, even with a substantial increase in ride height, our engineering team calculated the precise load and response characteristics needed to replicate stock response even with substantial variation from stock parameters.

Elephant Racing Safari Kits are Easily Reversible

Even if you’ve chosen one of our adjustable-height coilover safari packages, it is very easy to revert back to a factory torsion bar setup at any time and most of your safari components (bushings, drop links, camber plates, etc…) will carry over to enhance a factory ride-height suspension.

When considering toy brands that partner with automakers, Lego often comes to mind. Yet, Playmobil, one of its major competitors, boasts a surprisingly extensive collection of automotive toys. Its latest creation is ideal for Porsche enthusiasts and budding rally fans alike.

Coming in April, the Porsche 911 Carrera RS 2.7 Offroad set arrives in the wake of the release of the new 911 Dakar . However, this one is inspired by the classic Porsches that traveled the globe to tackle some of the world’s most extreme races in the ’60s and ’70s.

Unlike a Lego set, buyers won’t get to experience the joy of assembling their very own classic off-roader, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t take this toy apart. The model comes with a removable roof rack and roof.

That roof rack contains a spare tire and a gas can, both of which are held in place with silicon straps. In addition, the set comes with a rock pile, a shovel, and a recovery board to help extricate the Porsche if it gets bogged down in the soft stuff.

Lower down and farther back, the trunk can be opened, revealing a flat six engine, which ought to help parents teach their kids about the ins and outs of weight distribution. In addition, the model comes with rally lights, underbody protection, and a bumper guard.

Finished in an era-appropriate combination of green and orange, the set is rounded out by a driver whose racing suit matches the 911’s livery. An orange helmet with the Porsche crest tops it all off.

Measuring in at 10.4 by 4.33 by 3.74 inches (264x110x95 mm), the Porsche model is pretty large. It also comes with a reasonably big price tag, starting at $69.99.
