Top 7 Anne of Green Gables Locations to Experience on PEI

During a road trip through Canada, we visited Prince Edward Island specifically because I loved reading the Anne of Green Gables books! It’s a beautiful island that is worth exploring even if you’re not an Anne fan, but if you are, these are the top Anne of Green Gables locations you need to check out when you visit!

Top 7 Anne of Green Gables locations on PEI

Top 7 Anne of Green Gables Locations to Experience on PEI

Can you visit PEI without visiting Anne of Green Gables locations? You definitely shouldn’t because it’s one of the top things to do on PEI! And if you’re an Anne of Green Gables fangirl like I am, you’ll really love it. But there are lots of other things you can do on PEI if you want to experience more of the island (which I recommend, of course), and I have a have a blog post on the top things to do on PEI just for you.

Anne of Green Gables Museum

There are a few different places you can visit for the Anne experience, and the Anne of Green Gables Museum was probably my favorite. It’s at the home of L.M. Montgomery’s aunt and uncle, where Montgomery lived for a time and where she was married. And the land that it’s on is just beautiful!

It looks like it hasn’t changed since the 1800s, and you can see artifacts from Montgomery’s life, like the organ that was played at her wedding, and artifacts that she wrote about in her books, including Anne’s Enchanted Bookcase, the Crazy Patchwork Quilt, and the Blue Chest from The Story Girl.

Anne of Green Gables museum exterior on Prince Edward Island

This is the spot where Montgomery got married, and the guide said that they actually do still have weddings here today! So if you’re a huge Anne of Green Gables fan, you could have your wedding at the museum 🙂

The property that the house is on is absolutely beautiful! There are rolling hills, barns, and horses, and you can even go for a carriage ride. They also have a great gift shop with Anne of Green Gables gifts but also some cool locally made items, and I definitely gave them a lot of business 🙂

This is also where you can see the real Lake of Shining Waters that inspired Montgomery (and the carriage ride goes around it). If you look up the Lake of Shining Waters on PEI, you’ll see a different lake that was named after Montgomery’s Lake of Shining Waters so it isn’t the original. My husband went to check it out and there is an admission fee and it’s not as scenic as the one at the museum. So I just recommend seeing the real Lake of Shining Waters at the museum!

Green Gables Heritage Place

The Green Gables Heritage Place is the location that inspired the location of Green Gables. It was the house of Montgomery’s relatives, and while she never lived there, she visited frequently and it inspired a lot of the Anne of Green Gables locations that she wrote about. Lover’s Lane and the Haunted Wood are also on this property, and you can explore them!

Probably because this is the “real” Green Gables, it was a lot busier than the Museum was and there were a lot of people in and around the house. So just plan accordingly if you want any photos of Green Gables without people walking in front!

Green Gables Heritage Place on Prince Edward Island

The Heritage Place also has a museum about Montgomery’s life on PEI, and it was helpful to see a timeline of everything after visiting the Museum. It also had a pretty big gift shop, so I recommend checking that out on your way out 😉

Green Gables Heritage Place on Prince Edward Island

After you tour the house, you can walk through the Haunted Wood and Lover’s Lane! It was a beautiful (and shaded, thank goodness) walk, and while the house was really busy, the path was pretty quiet.

L.M. Montgomery’s birthplace

Montgomery’s birthplace wasn’t open when I stopped by, but you can tour it! Some things in the home are replicas, but there are a lot of artifacts from her life and her family that you can see.

L.M. Montgomery's birthplace on Prince Edward Island

Explore Avonlea Village

The town of Cavendish was where Montgomery lived and inspired the locations in Anne of Green Gables, but she named it Avonlea in the books. So Avonlea Village was named for Anne of Green Gables, and it’s a little village with historic buildings (including the school that Montgomery taught in) that have been turned into restaurants and shops. So while it’s not super authentic to Anne or Montgomery, it’s a cute place to walk around, and I recommend getting some chocolates and ice cream while you’re there! We also got raspberry cordial slushies from the chocolate shop, which were delicious 🙂

Other Places to Experience Anne of Green Gables

Two places I didn’t make it to are Montgomery’s grave site and Anne of Green Gables: The Musical . The musical is a huge production at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, and I think we just missed it by a day or two! It’s been put on annually for decades, and they’re actually changing it to biannually after 2024. So if you want to see it, make sure you plan your trip accordingly and get tickets well in advance!

Explore Charlottetown

So now for some things that are more indirectly tied to Anne of Green Gables but were mentioned in the books! Charlottetown is the capital of Prince Edward Island, and it’s such a beautiful historic city and mentioned a few times in Anne of Green Gables. And Montgomery did attend the Prince of Wales College in Charlottetown, which you can check out. We did a little driving tour around the historic areas to see everything.

a tree and a bench with a blue sky on Prince Edward Island

I couldn’t get over all the pretty houses everywhere! We spent an afternoon driving and walking around Charlottetown, and there’s a lot you can see there. My favorite spot was Victoria Park with the beautiful views of the water, so I definitely recommend visiting there if the weather is nice.

St. Dunstan’s Basilica

Drive around the countryside

One of the reasons I wanted to visit PEI is because the scenery sounds so picturesque in the Anne of Green Gables books. And it really does live up to the hype! I loved just driving around PEI and seeing the historic farms and rolling hills and quaint, colorful houses. You can really get an idea of how Montgomery was inspired to create such romantic names for everything in the books.

And we went in June when lupins were blooming everywhere and I was OBSESSED! (I even planted lupins in my garden this year because I loved them so much!)

countryside with trees and a lake on Prince Edward Island

There are a few scenic overlooks that you can pull over at to get some photos of the beautiful views!

trees and colorful homes on Prince Edward Island

So those are the top Anne of Green Gables locations I recommend seeing! We did all of this within two days, so it can definitely be done in a short trip (but I would have loved to have stayed longer). And if you’re really short on time, Charlottetown is the only thing that isn’t really close to the rest of the Anne of Green Gables locations, so you could skip that and do everything else within a day. If you have been to PEI, which spot was your favorite? 🙂

Your private Island Drive and Anne of Green Gables tour features some of the most picturesque Island landscapes to be found, from rolling farmland to seaside villages, and from lighthouses to the renowned Cavendish Beach.

This panoramic tour takes you to all-things-Island, with plenty of opportunities to stop and gather some stunning photos along the way.

Two of the not-to-be-missed stops on the tour include the cherished Anne of Green Gables homestead; the inspiration behind L.M. Montgomery's beloved novels, and the PEI Preserve Company; a must-stop for Islanders and visitors alike to stock up on delicious, locally made preserves.

"Kindred spirits are not so scarce as I used to think. It's splendid to find out there are so many of them in the world." - L.M. Montgomery, Anne of Green Gables.

When the novel Anne of Green Gables was first published in 1908, most people could only dream of visiting its magical setting. As the book became popular around the world, it's likely that many readers had no idea where Prince Edward Island was. They may have even wondered, "Is it a real place?" Today, millions of the book's fans have made the trip to PEI and discovered the land that captivated Anne in Lucy Maud Montgomery's stories. And for those who just can't get enough of their favorite red-headed girl, or the woman who created her, there are Anne-related attractions all over the Island.

In 1987, a 1913 Creamery was purchased in a worn-down building on the bank of the River Clyde, in the lovely village of New Glasgow in Prince Edward Island. The owner's goal was to renovate and create a food destination that welcomed and treated guests to food with integrity and flavor. It all started with low sugar preserves, specialty foods, blending full leaf tea, and has since grown to include spice blends as well. As part of the proprietor's larger purpose, they started The Gardens of Hope, a 12-acre garden sanctuary next door with a mission of opening a Respite Cottage for those dealing with life-threatening illnesses.

Also enjoy brief photo stops at quaint little fishing villages, lighthouses and the world-class Cavendish Beach.

A scenic day awaits on this private tour while in Prince Edward Island.

Please Note: No entrance fees are included with this tour.

Inspirational anne of green gables farm tour in pei, canada.

Anne of Green Gables Home

Nestled in the idyllic countryside of Prince Edward Island is the setting for the 1908 novel, Anne of Green Gables .  Touring the iconic farm, you intimately sense the muse for L.M. Montgomery’s classic novel.  Even more, nearby are the idyllic countryside and seaside treasures fertile for any imagination.   Fans of this legendary orphan, Anne must experience the heartwarming Anne of Green Gables House Tour.

In October 2022 I toured the Anne of Green Gables farm a second time and observed the unfortunate damage to Lucy M. Montgomery’s woods from Hurricane Fiona.

flo

Check out my YouTube walking tour in 2022, revealing the damage from Hurricane Fiona .

Anne’s Green Gables House Tour and Farm

IMG_5872

At Anne of Green Gables Museum and farm , I became absolutely enchanted with the setting and inspired to finally read the novel.  Its author, L.M. Montgomery, lived with her Grandparents at this farm without her mother, who died when she was an infant.  A young orphan girl in Cavendish, that was accidentally given (supposed to be a boy) to an older couple inspired the author’s protagonist, Anne.

Many of her characters in the book became inspired by Cavendish citizens, that she knew personally.  Later, L.M. Montgomery wrote an 8-book Anthology series on Anne of Green Gables.   Also, Anne with an E is a popular Netflix series following the adventures of this imaginative orphan.

Visitors go inside the home and walk the gardens and farm and guided tours are available.  I, however, savored an independent tour at my own pace.  There are many placards and exhibits to learn about the author, L.M. Montgomery and the setting for her Muse amidst the farm, trails and home.

3

Green Gables Heritage Place Trails

I enjoyed walking the trails, inspired and written about in her novels, such as, Lover’s Lane, Balsam Hollow Trail and the Haunted Woods.  Lover’s Lane is a short walking path, leading to the Balsam Hollow Trail, approximately 1 mile long.  In addition, the Haunted Woods take you on a walk through the serene, spruce shadows, imagined as haunted.  Walking on these trails, you smell the pine and wildflowers in the forest breeze. Also, if you listen carefully, the tree’s windy branches tell the story of an orphan girl’s dreams…

The plant life of these enchanting woods is plentiful with Red Maple and Red Spruce trees, ferns, herbs and wildflowers, such as, Painted Trillium, Daisies, Wild Lily of the Valley, Stemless Lady’s Slipper, Creeping Buttercups and Orchids.

IMG_5843

Red Sandstone Seacliffs of PEI

Additionally, driving through PEI’s countryside and shoreline, travelers find the soil and cliffs a cinnamon red.  This phenomenon occurs from iron oxide rusting by air.  I went to a beach and observed the red sandstone cliffs.  This geological evolution is fascinating. Simply put, the Appalachian Mountains used to stand in PEI and gradually wore down during the Ice Age by glaciers, leaving behind the sandstone.  Because its soft, the red stone easily erodes by wind and water, sculpting exquisite shapes and monuments along the shoreline.

IMG_5861

Overall, Anne of Green Gables House Tour

This pastoral island is one of my favorite places, that I have ever been.  It penetrated a deeply healing impression on my spirit.  Is it any wonder that L.M. Montgomery was inspired from this island as the muse to her heartwarming stories? PEI is a wholesome escape, where innocence and kindness still play with the imagination. Eventually, its charm gets under your skin, so you return home a better person, just by experiencing the quintessence of this charming island.

Day 4 Friday, August 9

Continental breakfast to start our day! The fun begins with an informal drive to the “North Shore” area. We will visit the famous Cavendish Beach; along with Green Gables Heritage Site and Avonlea Village. We will also visit the Birthplace of the esteemed authoress, Lucy Maud Montgomery, is situated on the picturesque village of “Clifton”, New London, PE on Route 6 overlooking the beautiful New London Harbour and the sand dunes of which she was to write so much about in later years. LM Montgomery was the authoress of the famous ANNE books, best known of which is Anne of Green Gables. You will have plenty of opportunity for pictures so be sure to bring along your camera. During the scenic drive you will see bright red soil, the rolling green hills, and quaint fishing villages which make this province a magnificent place to visit. This evening we will enjoy a lobster dinner. (B, D)

Day 5 Saturday, August 10

Following our continental breakfast this morning, we start our adventure by heading up to the North Cape. En route we will detour to visit the amazing Bottle Houses. Here we will witness over 25,000 recycled bottles ingenuously cemented together to create this unique attraction. We continue on our northwestern drive, reaching North Cape close to lunch. Here we will enjoy the spectacular view and learn about the North Cape Wind Farm; which was developed by the Prince Edward Island Energy Corporation. It consists of 16 Vestas wind turbines, rated at 660 kW, for a total installed capacity of 10.56 megawatts – enough to power over 4,000 homes. Lunch is on your own at Stompin Tom Centre. This afternoon we will visit the PEI Potato museum. Located in the community of O’Leary in the western part of Canada’s smallest province, it is surrounded by fertile potato fields where the humble potato plays an important role in the economy. The museum depicts an interesting display of the potato industry, and houses a large collection of farm implements and machinery related to the growing and harvesting of potatoes. This museum contains the largest exhibit of potato artifacts in the world! Again, we’ll enjoy an included dinner. (B, D)

L.M. Montgomery group hopes to capitalize on 150th birthday to attract new fans

'so far there's about 77 events, and there's more to come,' says an organizer.

Social Sharing

L.M. Montgomery's 150th birthday is still five months away, but the days and weeks until then will be filled with organizations and businesses across Prince Edward Island using creative ways to celebrate the iconic author.

Linda Lowther has been working to raise awareness about Montgomery for decades, starting with a summer job as a guide at Green Gables, the historic house that provided the setting for the author's most popular novel, Anne of Green Gables .

Lowther helped create the Montgomery Park in Cavendish, and The Inspiring World of L.M. Montgomery – A Literary Tour . Now she's a member of the organizing committee for Montgomery 150.

"Not counting the two musicals, so far there's about 77 events, and there's more to come," Lowther said.

"We have everything from ice cream socials and birthday cakes, to people impersonating Montgomery as a teacher in Bedeque and at Macphail Homestead."

A woman in a blue jacket stands in front of an exhibit of black and white photos.

There will be journalling workshops, painting and photography sessions inspired by Montgomery's writing, musical events revolving around her poetry, and a hike exploring the author's favourite paths.

Not everybody knows the full Montgomery

Lowther said Tourism Cavendish Beach and Central Coastal Tourism Partnership formed a committee for Montgomery 150 and created a fund to give organizations, associations and businesses the chance to create some events of their own.

‘She’d be the Taylor Swift of today, for writing’: How L.M. Montgomery’s 150th birthday will be marked

"Everybody knows Anne , but not everybody knows that Montgomery was a famous photographer, or that she had all kinds of other talents," Lowther said.

"People have gone out of their way to show some of the things that Montgomery did, that people maybe don't know about."

Lowther said she and her group have been planning for the milestone birthday for a while.

"She's our hero. She's the one thing that's unique for Prince Edward Island that nobody else has," she said.

Two women in old-fashioned clothing walking down a treed path.

"She's still the world's best-selling children's author, better than any other author. So we know that she has potential. If she was here today, she'd be the Taylor Swift of today for writing. She was a pretty smart cookie."

She's the one thing that's unique for Prince Edward Island that nobody else has. — Linda Lowther, Montgomery 150 committee

Lowther said the special events will continue until the actual anniversary of Montgomery's birth on Nov. 30, 1874.

She said her group is also hoping to do something else for Montgomery, more permanent, to celebrate this milestone.

"I'd still like to see more because we'd like to see a legacy piece that would stay forever," she said.

"This is a one-year thing, but how do we keep her legacy alive over the next few years? And I think we will be trying to do something for that."

Huge market

The executive director of Tourism Cavendish Beach has a daily vantage point of the influence Montgomery has had, talking to visitors who have travelled to Prince Edward Island because of the famous author.

"We see visitors coming from all over the world... who are huge fans of Montgomery and we see a huge market for that," Darcy Butler said.

"We do see a need for an investment, and continued investment, and this 150 is an opportunity for us to really showcase that."

Two women in old-fashioned clothing sit together on the beach.

Butler said a logo created for Montgomery 150 portrays the author together with her beloved creation Anne Shirley, whom author Mark Twain called "the dearest and most moving and delightful child since the immortal Alice," created by Lewis Carroll.

"We thought it kind of neat to link the two so that people that are familiar with Anne may also learn more and understand who the author is," Butler said.

"The issue sometimes is that people don't always know who the author is. And we want to make sure that the author is brought to the forefront and that she's recognized as much as Anne."

Butler said the project has received financial support from Tourism P.E.I., Heritage Canada, and the Resort Municipality that includes Cavendish, as well as the destination management fund , generated through a levy from the two Cavendish Beach summer music festivals.

Ideally, he said, they would have liked $500,000 to work with, but they are "doing their best" with just under $200,000.

Butler said he would also like there to be a long-term legacy project coming out of the Montgomery 150 celebrations.

Lucy Maud Montgomery's long road to fame

"We don't need to be sold in this region. We know how important she is and what she's contributed," Butler said.

I think we all need to get behind Montgomery, and just realize the contributions and what an incredible woman she really was. — Darcy Butler, Tourism Cavendish Beach

"Elsewhere throughout the province, she may be dismissed. But I think we all need to get behind Montgomery, and just realize the contributions and what an incredible woman she really was."

A day in her teaching life

The Lower Bedeque Schoolhouse, where Montgomery taught for about six months in the late 1890s, will be offering a program for children called "A Day in L.M. Montgomery's Classroom" as part of the birthday celebrations.

A teacher in historical costume will offer children the chance to write on slates, do historic crafts and play historic games at recess.

"I'm hoping to think about Lucy Maud Montgomery when I'm doing that — maybe read some dramatic stories to the children, some poetry, and also maybe stick to the classics like reading, writing and arithmetic," said Caeley Currie, manager of the Bedeque Area Historical Museum in Central Bedeque, P.E.I., where the schoolhouse is now located.

Currie said she hopes the schoolhouse program will also raise awareness.

"I'm also really excited for people to realize that L.M. Montgomery touched so many parts of this Island," she said.

"A lot of the attention is obviously focused on the North Shore around Cavendish, but she lived in many parts of the island, and Lower Bedeque had a really important place in her heart. "
