MS Royal Esadora Nile cruise arranged by Classic Holidays

We travelled for 7 nights aboard the MS Royal Esadora. This boat is rated as 5 stars by the Egyptian travel authorities. It is not 5 star by British ratings - however - they get a lot of things spot on. The staff are superb, all of them well trained to do their jobs, all of them friendly, all of them effective in their work, all of them willing to assist. This is a very good starting point for the review. The food comes next, it's varied and plentiful. Food is something of a matter of individual taste but I found there to be something for everyone most, if not all of the time. It was well prepared and well cooked. To complement the food is the drink, (we opted for the £150 per person all inclusive package) the wine is drinkable, served by the glass at mealtimes. I preferred the red to the white but it is Egyptian wine not AOC from a better region of France if you follow my meaning! Water was plentiful and so was Stella beer and Sprite. Spirits were 'interesting, the gin as OK, the brandy a little tasteless and the whisky has a definite flavour of vanilla! Folk quickly got used to the different taste of local spirits! The bedrooms now are, as might be expected, smaller than you would find in a city 5 star hotel. Having said that they are perfectly adequate with enough space to do everything that needs to be done. Handy sockets for charging phones (with an adapter) and a TV which we didn't use. The bed was comfortable and the bathroom, whilst bijou, was again perfectly adequate. The room was kept immaculate by the housekeeping team who dressed the room each day with a sculpture made from towels. The public areas of the boat were always clean and tidy, again with staff always willing to help. The Restaurant and bar staff were helpful, and friendly and always keen to please. There were sufficient sun beds and tables and chairs on the upper deck and the small on deck pool was well used but never crowded. The evening entertainment was a bit hit and miss, again, individual taste come in play here. My personal favourite was the Whirling Dervish. There were two 'Egyptian Evenings' on board where the adventurous dress in 'traditional; costume. This can be purchased on board or in any local bazar. We opted of buying some clothing on the boat and were not disappointed with the costumes which was sufficient for both of us for a total of around £35 sterling. In addition to the clothing there was offers of help to tie headscarves correctly and even apply makeup! Two of our party used the spa services for a massage and both commented how good it was, the head neck and back massage cost in the region of £35 sterling. The tour guide we were allocated, Ahmed, was excellent, there's nothing more to add to that really. Good knowledge and care taken with less abled tourists. He bought the Nile experience to life. The different tours I don't intend to comment on other than to say that the opportunity to see the sights, many of which have been around for over three thousand years is truly awesome. Beware the pony and trap drivers, they do like to spice things up with a bit of a race! Ours badly mishandled things and very nearly turned the trap over - not a good experience - he then proceeded to try and diddle us on the agreed price. A note about tipping - everyone works hard to get tips, some don't work so hard but still feel entitled, some just ask for money! This is constant everywhere in Egypt and it is a bit like their selling techniques (and 'upselling' techniques) must start in the cradle - they are very good at it. Just about everything you buy you need to barter for, they are used to it, we are not which always gives them the upper hand. If yo don't want to buy, don't make eye contact, and walk on by with a firm 'No Thankyou' if necessary. Back to the ME Royal Esadora, we had a great time, and the old adage applies would I go back on board, yes, I would. The package that we had from Classic Holidays was very competitively priced and it worked well for our group. Would I use them again, yes I would. Why only four stars, I believe that there is always room for improvement albeit small improvements.

stayed at the Fairmont Nile Hotel and was upgraded to a full Nile view room. Saw the sunrise over teh Nile and teh boats and river traffic floating by. Very relaxing!

Certainly recommend you see the river and perhaps take a cruise. It is such a part of the history of Egypt. However, the waterfront is not very picturesque.

We were on the Royal Viking Nile Cruise for 4 nights as part of a group tour from Sri Lanka. The room and amenities were good. The toilet smelled of stagnant water. A leak was promptly attended to by the maintenance team. Bed linen was changed everyday, which is unnecessary - if you need to cut costs. Water on the cruise is supposedly pricy so our guide advised us to take our own bottled water. WiFi had to be paid for and was available at the reception and lounge. It would have been appreciated if water and WiFi was provided without charging exorbitant prices, specially "Water is a valuable resource in both life and in the ways of Islam, and as such, it is considered a great charitable act in Islam to give water to another living thing on earth. Such act is greatly rewarded and brings us closer to Allah". The food was tasteless, reparative and lacked flavour. Eg. The pasta had no salt in it nor garlic, cheese nor seasoning. It was just boiled pasta tossed in tomatoe sauce/ paste. The beetroot soup tasted bitter and had an orange flavour. I am sure the orange rind was also squeezed in when making the soup. Doesn't the chef taste the food before he sends it out? 🤮 I caught a bug and had diarrhoea and the others too complained about unsettled bowels.

The additional optional tours were also good, we did the Metro tour which I highly recommend, we also paid for the Kremlin tour. The hop on hop off has three different lines all included. Only fault was the bus was sometimes full and you had to wait for the next one which was about 15 minutes (in the cold). Read more Written January 6, 2020

They suggested we do the 1 hour boat trip and said they would drop us to the dock. 1) they dropped us in the wrong place 2) they were lost because of the marathon Then the boat, after we finally found it: 1) stinking fumes, actually gagging 2) no commentary, in fact, no interaction unless you begged 3) offered us 2 for 1 icecreams as they had melted and refrozen as the fridge gets turned off at night Honestly, we enjoyed the afternoon in the boat but spent all of it laughing at just how awful it was!!! The worst thing in Moscow! Read more Written August 18, 2019
  • niruDurbs 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Not the best value for the price The ticket is quite expensive and covers three different routes in a 24 hour period. The red route is quite exciting and takes about an hour. The bus comes every 10 to 15 minutes. However the other two routes take about two hours each and buses come every 30 to 40 minute period. If the bus is full then you have to wait at the stop for the next bus. So personally I feel that not much can be seen this way. I definitely was not impressed. However it must be noted that one can learn a lot about the history of Moscow Read more Written July 3, 2019

  • Rebecca J 0 contributions 3.0 of 5 bubbles Boat element was excellent We purchased a ticket online for the boat and bus for 2 days. The boat element was wonderful, we saw some amazing parts of Moscow along the river side. The bus element was very disappointing as it only started at 10am and was finished by 6:30pm. It was extremely warm when we were there and it would have been great to do the tour in the cool of the day. There was also no air conditioning in the down stairs part of the bus. They also turned away passengers at one of the stops as the bus was full and there was not another bus for 40 minutes. Read more Written September 26, 2018

The ear phones were small and sometimes the commentary did not link up with the sites you were seeing. The green bus takes you on a longer route and ours took two and a half hours due to the heavy traffic. I would not recommend this trip unless it is raining or you want to fill in time. • WilliamDyer 0 contributions 1.0 of 5 bubbles Poor service on boat and too many waiting times on buses For the price, you should expect at minimum English speaking tour guides with decent experience, but at least in my case that did not happen both in buses and boats. And in the boat even tough we were 90% English speaking tourist at least, the tour guide spoke 95% of the time in Russia, and only 3 sentences in English, I really counted how many times she spoke in English. And at the end she asks us if we have any questions? Of course I told her I couldn’t ask her anything since I didn’t understand 95% of what she was saying. The boat tour is not worth it, just take the bus that would be my advice. Second minus is the waiting times, in the boat they made us wait an hour before it departed, and in many stops with the buses waiting times of 20-30 minutes. I actually think I lost that day around 2 hours doing nothing. Be careful. Read more Written July 10, 2018

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

royal isadora nile cruise

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

royal isadora nile cruise

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

royal isadora nile cruise

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

royal isadora nile cruise

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

royal isadora nile cruise

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

River Cruise on Luxurious Radisson Boat

Equipped with ice-breaking technology, these huge fancy yachts are the only river cruisers running all year around. The round trip journey takes two and a half hours and floats past all the big sights like the White House, Novodevichy monastery and the Kremlin. There’s a large open air observation deck up top, while the main body of the ship houses a restaurant with a dance floor for a romantic post dinner dance. For a particularly romantic experience take one of the evening boats and admire the bright lights of the city skyline at night.

The most relaxing and picturesque tour that Moscow can offer: a great way to see the city center and its main attractions. This is a perfect alternative to exploring the city by car, if you only have time to do sightseeing during weekday rush hours.

Your English-speaking guide is eager to share every bit of their knowledge about the surrounding landscape, the architecture and historical details.

We conduct Moscow river tour on Radisson Flotilla boats all year around!  It’s warm inside during winter months, while there’s air conditioning during hot summer days. You may also treat yourself to drinks, lunch or dinner on board (drinks and food are not included in tour price).
