WinterStorm are pleased to welcome The Runrig Experience by Beat The Drum to the Steve Strange Main Stage on Sunday 26 th November 2023 as part of the After The ‘Storm event.

With the recent and tragic early passing of Bruce Guthro, this already emotional event has taken on even greater poignancy but it will undoubtedly be a full on celebration of everything that Runrig have left us over a fifty year period.

In support will be the wonderful Clann an Drumma with the afternoon being opened by the ladies from The Ayrshire Rock Choir

Beat the Drum

Edinburgh singer/guitarist Richie Muir (based in Nottingham) found himself with a lack of work during the pandemic in 2020. His love for Scottish Celtic rock band, Runrig lead him to create a Facebook page dedicated to acoustic Runrig covers. He soon joined forces with band manager Ben Marshall to create a live tribute show celebrating the music of Runrig.

Joining Muir as part of the Beat The Drum line up were bassist Duncan MacDonald, and his London-based Glaswegian son Scott on drums, along with Jason Laing (from the Isle of Lewis) on guitar. The addition of keys saw the band behind frontman Richie Muir get down to rehearsals. Although the role of percussionist had and remains yet to be filled permanently, a number of temporary percussionists join the band for the live shows and represent the essential sonic contribution made by Runrig’s percussionist Calum MacDonald.

The addition of a Runrig-themed set to WinterStorm 2023 is even more apt considering how Plan B contributed to the band recording a version of Loch Lomond back in 2012 for Children In Need - you can read more about it here!

WinterStorm very much look forward to welcoming ‘The Runrig Experience’ by Beat The Drum to the After The ‘Storm Steve Strange Main Stage on Sunday 26 th November 2023 in Troon, Scotland.

Clann and Drumma took the main stage of WinterStorm by surprise last year and we couldn't wait to sign them up to return - they'll be also now performing a longer set in support to The Runrig Experience. A full on attack on the Celtic senses with pipes and drums is in store and you do not want to miss this to get warmed up!

The Ayrshire Rock Choir

We are delighted to support the Ayrshire Rock Choir and they will be opening the event on the Sunday afternoon. Comprising of ladies from across Ayrshire, the group is one of a network across the UK who get together to perform contemporary pop and rock songs.

Great fun and singalong guaranteed!

On stage at 4.30pm

When lockdown hit in 2020, few people knew the impact that the pandemic would have on the music industry across the UK. Musicians, producers and managers up and down the land found themselves with time on their hands like they never had before. Instead of back to back road schedules they found themselves with days of empty diaries as venues, theatres and concert halls closed their doors on mass.

One such musician was Richie Muir, an Edinburgh singer/guitarist based in Nottingham but most importantly of all, a huge, lifelong Runrig fan.

During lockdown, Richie launched a Facebook page, dedicated to acoustic covers of Runrig songs from across the decades and before long, combined with the band manager Ben Marshall, the concept of a live show celebrating the music of Runrig was born and wheels were in motion.

“From the start, we didn’t want to be a ‘look-a-like’ type tribute band. We wanted the show to be a celebration of the band’s music. Yes we wanted it to sound authentic and to represent what the band was about but this isn’t about replacing the void left by them. It’s about celebrating their music and their incredible contribution to the music industry, Scotland as a whole and the tiny, significant moments in the lives of their fans. We wanted to create a show where people could come along, enjoy themselves, sing, dance, celebrate and remember and I think we’ve really done that”

Ben Marshall

“We hope you enjoy the show as much as we have done creating it”

Richie Muir

Three months into the search for members and the band was nearly complete. With Skye native Duncan MacDonald on Bass and his London based Glaswegian son Scott on drums joined by the insanely talented Jason Laing (Isle of Lewis) on guitars, the lineup behind lead singer and frontman Richie Muir was nearing completion and with the addition of keyboards, things were ready to roll, meaning that rehearsals could begin. Although the role of percussionist had and remains yet to be filled permanently, a number of temporary percussionists are lined up to complete the band for the live shows scheduled and represent the essential sonic contribution made by Runrig’s percussionist Calum MacDonald.

Although Richie was Nottingham based and Scott London, geography, even during COVID times, didn’t prove an obstacle as the band used Zoom and other technologies to refine parts, craft a set list and plan everything before days of rehearsals took place in a bid to create the standards of authenticity that the project demanded.

Fast forward 12 months and restrictions were lifted to a degree that everyone felt the time was right to unleash ‘The Runrig Experience’ and ‘Beat The Drum’

* Beat the Drum – The Runrig Experience *

Beat The Drum is a professional tribute band, playing homage to the Scottish Celtic Rock band ‘Runrig’. It’s time to ‘Dance Again’ and relive countless Runrig Anthems including Loch Lomond, Rocket To The Moon, Every River, Greatest Flame, Hearts of Olden Glory and more as part of the brand new ‘Runrig Experience’.

RunRig were where one of Scotland’s most successful Bands, specially beside Scotland they had a true following in Denmark and Germany with serval number One Hits and Albums in the Charts. Original RunRig Scottish Celtic rock band was formed on the Isle of Skye in 1973. The band released fourteen studio albums, with a number of their songs sung in Scottish Gaelic .

Runrig’s music is often described as a blend of folk and rock music, with the band’s lyrics often focusing upon locations, history, politics, and people that are unique to Scotland.

In 2016, the band announced that it would retire from studio recording after the release of its 14th studio album, The Story and announced their final tour The Final Mile in 2017. In August 2018, Runrig performed the final shows of their farewell tour, entitled The Last Dance , in Stirling City Park with an estimated 52,000 fans attended.

Richie Muir, an Edinburgh singer/guitarist based in Nottingham but most importantly of all, a huge, lifelong Runrig fan came up the idea to keep this fantastic music alive and started to form RunRig Experience, a band to celebrate the music of RunRig.

“From the start, we didn’t want to be a ‘look-a-like’ type tribute band. We wanted the show to be a celebration of the RunRig’s music. Yes, we wanted it to sound authentic and to represent what RunRig was about, but this isn’t about replacing the void left by them.
