The exterior kitchen, which includes a large sink, counter space, fridge, and griddle, is the perfect excuse to get outside and touch some grass.

The 11′ power awning with LED lighting is perfect for shading and lighting, no matter the time of day or night. Plus, those LED lights always make for an excellent outside aesthetic.

A large, 20′ awning will more than keep the sun off your shoulders while you cook, and just inside the entryway is a massive, walk-pantry. It’s like the outdoor kitchen and pantry were made for one another.

Also, the kiddos won’t have far to travel from their double bunks to breakfast, fresh off the griddle.

It also has the neatest exterior kitchen, which slides out and unfolds like it’s right out of a Transformers movie. It includes a stainless steel table surface, a slide-out drawer for cooking instruments, a grill surface with a single buner, an additional side drawer, cup holders, and a sink.

How to Stock Your Travel Trailer’s Outdoor Kitchen

Let’s face it, stocking your travel trailer can seem a bit overwhelming, challenging, and even expensive if you are new to RVing. There is an art to it that’s for sure, and this checklist will help you take the guesswork out of it.

  • Food that you will prepare
  • Oils, Spices, and Seasonings
  • Dishes and drinkware
  • Cooking utensils
  • Plastic bags
  • Aluminum foil
  • Dish towels
  • Paper towels
  • Oven mitts and pot holders
  • Small trash can
  • Pots and pans (if possible, use the same size so you only need one lid)
  • Measuring cups
  • Plastic storage containers
  • Cookie sheet pan
  • Cutting board
  • Grilling tools
  • Meat thermometer
  • Cleaning supplies

Of course, when you are packing your kitchen up, don’t forget your favorite comforts of home, like your coffee maker and Crockpot, because you will miss them if you use them often.

Nothing beats a hot cup of coffee in the morning or a warm bowl of chili in the evening at a campground. However, be mindful of your counter space and have a plan to secure counter dwellers while your RV is going down the road!

Must-Have Items to Enhance Your Outdoor Kitchen Dining Experience

1. bumper mount grill.

Attaching a bumper mount grill to the bumper of the RV is an easy option for travel trailers. You will like the overall portability it offers as well as how easy it is to store because of the dimensions.

It is a great product to have for those who wish to cook outside their RV. Most feature 14-gauge steel so you get reliable durability. You can easily mount it on any 4”-measuring box beam RV bumper. Lastly, the two pivot points in the arm will help you keep it safely away from your vehicle.

2. Blackstone Grill

If you are looking for something that is easily transportable for camping, a Blackstone Grill may be a good option for your travel trailer outdoor kitchen.  At a whopping 35,000 BTU, this magnificent grill can produce an amount of heat that no other grill here can match.

Now, the best thing about the 35,000 BTU is that it’s split between two independently operating burners.  Lastly, these burners can cook two vastly different foods at the same time at different temperatures and speeds.

3. Screenhouse Over Picnic Table

When it comes to camp cooking, nothing puts a damper on picnics and outdoor dining more than a battle with insects, especially mosquitos.  Designed to fit over a standard-size picnic table, picnic table screen houses can come with a magnetic door, mesh walls, and roof to keep the sun and bugs at bay.

The front and rear entrances can feature self-closing magnetic doors for hands-free entrance and exit which is great when trying to get your meals prepared!

4. Portable Ice Maker

Ahh, ice makes every drink better, especially when it’s hot outside.  It may seem like a luxury when camping, but it doesn’t have to be.  Check out our article here ( 5 Best Portable Ice Makers for an RV ) about the best portable ice makers for an RV.

5. Mini Fridge

An outdoor kitchen fridge is perfect for when you just want to keep snacks, beer, wine, and drinks for the kiddos, and the convenience of having them close to your outside dining area is a must.

Here are a few mini fridge models designed for RV or outdoor camping kitchens:

  • BLACK+DECKER BCRK17W 1.7 cubic ft. Energy Star refrigerator is a great choice for any outdoor kitchen. Its small footprint makes this unit compact, responsive, and portable.
  • Antarctic Star Compact Mini Refrigerator with Separate Freezer has a vintage look but it has a separate fridge and freezer!

6. Microwave Oven

Need to fuel up quickly? Enjoy hot meals and snacks in a pinch with an RV microwave. Specifically designed for use in RVs, these microwaves were built to withstand vibrations of travel. Filled with various functionalities and multiple capacities, upgrade your breakfast, lunch, and dinners.

Some brands to consider are:

  • Furrion 1.5 cu.ft. Over-The-Range Convection Microwave Oven
  • Toshiba EM131A5C-BS Microwave Oven with Smart Sensor Easy Clean Interior, ECO Mode and Sound On-Off, 1.2 Cu. ft, Black Stainless Steel

When you’re adventuring on the open road and camping out in a travel trailer, you’ll want to take advantage of all of the perks of nature.

If the weather is nice, cooking inside might hinder you from taking in the scenic views outside, so why limit yourself? As you hunt for the right travel trailer for your adventures, be sure to look for one with an outdoor kitchen.

Keep reading to learn all about the top travel trailer floorplans that feature outdoor kitchens.

What Does an Outdoor Kitchen Include

What Does an Outdoor Kitchen Include?

Travel trailer outdoor kitchens can include different features and appliances, so you need to consider what your needs are, such as:

Cooking appliances (whether it’s fitted with a grill, stove, or just propane hook-ups for your campstove)

Food storage, such as an outdoor mini fridge

Prep and dining space (some even include a sink and/or an outdoor shower)

Lots of outdoor kitchens are complemented by the travel trailer’s existing outdoor living spaces.

Nearly all new travel trailers are equipped with a power awning, and many have additional features such as LED lighting, outdoor speakers, and even entertainment centers.

7 Best Travel Trailers With Outdoor Kitchens

The best travel trailers are made for comfort and style, inside and out. When you’re considering the outdoor kitchen features and appliances, the following travel trailers offer all of the fittings you need to create and enjoy delicious meals from outside your trailer.

1. Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite 300BHS

When you want a travel trailer that can accommodate up to 10, the Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite 300BHS is definitely the travel trailer you want.

It has a bunkroom at the back of the trailer that has dedicated sleeping space for four, in addition to the queen master bedroom and convertible dinette and sofa in the living space.

If you have a large group, the single bathroom may present some problems, but it should be okay if you’re camping in a campground with facilities.

The Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite 300BHS has a full kitchen with a double-bowl large sink, a three-burner cooktop and oven, convection microwave, and a 6 cu.ft. stainless steel double-door refrigerator and freezer.

With the included outdoor kitchen, your cooking capacity and outdoor enjoyment is doubled with the Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite 300BHS.

There’s a tall mini fridge for food and beverage storage, a sink and a grill/stove with additional storage cabinets and drawers.

Overhead, the door to the outdoor kitchen opens like a hatch to keep you covered if it’s raining.

After you’re finished cooking, set up your meal under the 18-foot power awning, turn on some tunes to listen through the outdoor speakers, and enjoy!

Key Features & Price:

  • 13,500 BTU air conditioner and forced air/ducted furnace
  • 4-person bunkhouse
  • Full outdoor kitchen (grill/stove, fridge, sink and storage)
  • Hot/cold outdoor shower
  • Price: Starting at $26,999

2. Dutchmen Kodiak 3321BHSL

The Dutchmen Kodiak 3321BHSL also has a bunkhouse, but this layout is a little bit different than the Coachmen Apex Ultra-Lite 300BHS, since it has a convertible dinette under the driver’s side bunk.

It has a large entertainment center with a fireplace and theater seating across the trailer next to the main convertible dinette in the living space.

The fully-featured indoor galley feels more like a residential kitchen with the island and oversized farm-style single bowl sink.

All of the appliances are stainless steel, including the three-burner range top with an oven and glass cover, 10 cu.ft. double door refrigerator, microwave and range hood with a 12-volt fan and light.

The trailer has a spacious bathroom with a toilet, shower, sink and vanity. There are slide-outs on either side of the living area, making it feel almost double in size when you’re parked at your campsite.

Another feature that upgrades the Dutchmen Kodiak is the king-sized bed in the master bedroom.

The 3321BHSL Dutchmen Kodiak Ultimate has a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen, with a tall mini fridge, 2-burner propane stove, sink, storage cabinets, and plenty of counter space with an overhead LED light and outlet.

Cook from the outdoor kitchen with the hatch to protect you from the elements, then head under the 18-foot adjustable power awning with LED lights.

There are outdoor speakers installed on the trailer to provide ambiance, and you can even install a TV with the prepped outdoor hookups and mount.

  • 13,500-BTU Ducted air conditioner and high output furnace
  • 4-person bunkhouse with secondary dinette
  • Upgraded Insulation Package
  • Wifi W/4G LTE Connectivity
  • Price: Starting at $50,968

3. Grand Design Solitude 377MBS

One of the more luxurious travel trailers with outdoor kitchens on this list is the Grand Design Solitude.

There are six floorplans with pull-out kitchens outside under the awning, but I think the 377MBS is the most unique and versatile, since it has a second bedroom with a tri-fold sofa bed, fold-down bunk in the loft above, a desk and a closet.

Like all of the Grand Design Solitude trailers, the 377MBS has a spacious living area with a sofa bed and theater seating in front of the entertainment center with an LED TV and fireplace.

There’s a free-standing dinette across from the kitchen, which is fully equipped with a 3-burner professional grade stainless steel cooktop with a built-in oven, a convection microwave, an oversized pantry with LED rope lighting, and a 18 cu.ft. four-door refrigerator.

The kitchen is one of the most residential in design, with real tile backsplashes and a large two-bowl kitchen sink with a single faucet and pull-out sprayer placed in the central island.

The single bathroom has everything you need in a compact space, with plenty of storage. In the main bedroom, the queen sized bed can be switched out for a king option, still with plenty of space to walk around.

There’s shelf storage and a full wardrobe closet, a second closet that’s prepped for a stackable washer and dryer, a pull-out ottoman, and a flip-top dresser beneath the LED TV.

Unlike some of the travel trailers on this list, where the outdoor kitchens are integrated into the body of the trailer, the outdoor cooking area in the Grand Design Solitude is a slide-out drawer that has a small sink and camp grill with a fold-out table for food prep and dining.

There’s a small shelf behind the sink and grill for additional space. While there isn’t an outdoor mini fridge, the huge 18 cu.ft. fridge inside will probably have all of the cold food storage space you’ll need.

The pull-out kitchen is centrally placed beneath the main 20-foot awning, with an outdoor shower nearby to make clean-up a breeze.

  • 35,000 BTU furnace, heat pump air conditioner upgrade optional
  • Bunkroom/office
  • Prepped for stackable washer and dryer
  • Price: Starting at $93,025

4. Jayco Jay Flight SLX 294QBS

Jayco is one of the top names in travel trailers, and they offer several models with an outdoor kitchen.

The Jay Flight SLX 8 294QBS is a bunkhouse travel trailer that can accommodate up to 10 people if you choose the hide-a-bed option.

However, packing so many people into a small space is bound to put a lot of pressure on the kitchen, even if it is fully-equipped. Having an outdoor kitchen is certainly going to help.

There’s a queen-sized bed and dual wardrobes in the master bedroom, and a bench with storage space and an entertainment center in the dividing wall between the bedroom and living area.

A spacious, convertible dinette and hide-a-bed sofa take up the slide-out, expanding your interior space when you’re camped out.

You can cook meals just as you would at home from the interior kitchen, which has a spacious counter and sink area with a large 50/50 acrylic sink, brushed nickel faucets, and plenty of storage between the overhead and under sink cabinets. T

here’s a three-burner cooktop range with a glass cover, oven, and stainless steel microwave above.

Keep your fresh food cold in the 6 cu. ft. Norcold® stainless steel refrigerator with temperature controls, and store your dry food in the spacious pantry.

Across from the pantry, you’ll find the single bathroom in the trailer, although it is expertly designed for maximum space.

There’s a huge walk-in shower and spacious countertop with a vanity and sink beside the toilet.

The bunkhouse at the back of the trailer has four bunks and a large wardrobe and TV cabinet.

Outside the Jayco Jay Flight SLX 8 294QBS, get cooking from your full-equipped outdoor kitchen, with a 2-burner camp stove and sink that slide out, and a tall mini fridge for your food and beverage storage.

Once the meal is ready, head under the 18-foot power awning with LED lights and speakers to enjoy your food in the great outdoors. There’s a hot/cold outdoor shower to assist with the clean-up.

Key Features & Price:

  • 13,500-BTU roof-mounted A/C
  • Premium multimedia sound system with MP3/iPod input jacks and Bluetooth® connectivity
  • Price: Starting at $31,766

5. Jayco White Hawk 26RK

The Jayco White Hawk 26RK is another Jayco travel trailer with an outdoor kitchen, and this floorplan is very unique.

The kitchen is at the back of the trailer, with a Furrion® 3-burner recessed glass cooktop range that includes an oven, a microwave, an extra-deep 8 cu.ft. refrigerator, and a deep, split bowl, stainless steel sink with high rise, pull out faucet and dry rack/ sink cover combo.

A single slide-out contains the convertible dinette (free standing table options available) and tri-fold sofa across from the large entertainment center and kitchen pantry.

The bathroom in this travel trailer is quite large, with a porcelain foot flush toilet, a 34-inch shower with solid door enclosure, vanity sink with overhead medicine cabinet, and linen closet.

In the master bedroom, which has its own entrance, there’s a queen bed and lots of storage between the over-bed cabinet, dual wardrobes, and additional closet.

Outside, the 20-foot power awning covers both doors and the fully-equipped outdoor kitchen, which has a 2-burner camp stove, sink with embossed metal countertops, tall mini fridge, and plenty of work space.

There are two marine-grade exterior speakers to provide ambiance while you cook and relax outside your Jayco White Hawk trailer.

  • 13,500 BTU air conditioner, 35,000 BTU furnace
  • Rear kitchen
  • Large entertainment center w/ 40″ LED TV
  • AM/FM/CD/DVD/Bluetooth® stereo with speakers
  • JaySMART™ back-up assist lighting
  • Price: Starting at $44,378

6. KZ Sportsmen 333BHK

The KZ Sportsmen 333BHK is similar to the Dutchmen Kodiak, featuring a rear bunkhouse with a second dinette.

However, it has other layout features that make it unique, such as the angular bathroom design to maximize space and the kitchen island with a double sink and lots of counter space for food prep.

The central living and kitchen area is the heart of the KZ Sportsmen 333BHK, with a 70-inch sofa, spacious dinette, and large entertainment center that’s placed on the angled wall off of the bathroom for easier viewing throughout the room.

Across from the dinette, the kitchen island has seamless countertops and an undermount acrylic sink with sink covers and a stainless steel residential kitchen faucet with a pull-down sprayer.

The main cooking area has a three-burner cooktop and oven with a range hood and turntable microwave above in the overhead cabinet.

There’s also an 8 cu.ft. refrigerator, pantry and hutch for more storage. With two bedrooms, the KZ Sportsmen 333BHK is great for groups or families.

The bunkhouse can accommodate up to five, with three bunks and a convertible dinette.

At the front of the trailer, the queen master bedroom also has two wardrobes on either side of the bed, with overhead cabinets for extra storage space.

The single bathroom has a unique layout between the master bedroom and living area, with a shower and vanity sink along the sidewall, and the toilet placed between the doors exiting to the bedroom and living area.

Cook outside with the two-burner stove and sink, which slide out for convenient use.

There’s a tall mini fridge as well for storing your fresh food and beverages, with plenty of countertop space for food prep.

Enjoy your meal from under the smart arm power awning that has a drip rail and spouts to keep you dry if it’s raining.

The awning also has an LED light strip and exterior speakers to provide some tunes in your outdoor living space.

  • 13,500 BTU air conditioner, 30,000 BTU furnace
  • Flip-down 71″ storage rack on rear bumper
  • Wireless Backup Camera System
  • Smart Arm awning with motion security sensor and wind sensor
  • Price: Starting at $24,995

7. Prime Time LaCrosse 3360BI

Another travel trailer that maximizes a small space for residential-style living is the Prime Time LaCrosse 3360BI.

Like the two previous trailers on this list, the LaCrosse 3360BI has a bunkhouse in the back that sleeps four, an island in the kitchen, and an angular bathroom layout.

The large 87-inch U-shaped dinette and comfortable sofa bed in the living area offer plenty of seating during the day and extra sleeping areas at night, so that the trailer can accommodate up to 8 people between the living area, bunkhouse, and queen master bedroom.

In addition to two shirt closets and lots of overhead storage, the master bed has underbed storage, a quilted residential bedspread, an “Evergreen” select mattress, and even its own heat and air conditioning vents.

Comfort and beautiful design are key aspects of the Prime Time LaCrosse 3360BI, with premium vinyl flooring and pre-drilled cabinetry with solid wood core framing and Shaker-style cabinet doors with glass inserts throughout.

The 82-inch interior ceiling height is certainly a perk, offering “walk in” height in the oversized MAX slide-out.

The kitchen is also equipped and styled for everyday use, including a three-burner Furrion residential cooktop, a 30-inch convection microwave, and an 11 cu.ft. stainless steel 12-volt refrigerator.

Fixtures and storage throughout the kitchen are designed with residential appeal, from the solid surface countertops and single-bowl stainless steel sink with J-spout faucet, to the brushed nickel fixtures and black hardware.

There’s even a MAX storage drawer below the stove for your oversized pots and pans, and a decorative pendant light above the island.

But a top appeal of camping in a travel trailer is your access to the great outdoors, and it’s especially important to have some outdoor living space when you’re traveling with lots of people.

The Prime Time LaCrosse 3360BI has a 17-foot power awning with LED lights and a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen to expand your options out into the natural beauty of your campsite.

Step outside to cook in nature from the outdoor kitchen, which has a stainless steel cooktop and tall mini fridge, as well as overhead cabinets and countertop space for storage and meal prep.

There’s an outside shower handy to help you wash up after your meal. The trailer has LED-lit marine-grade exterior speakers and is even prepped for a TV with a bracket and hook-ups.

  • 15,000 BTU Air Conditioner and 30,000 BTU High Capacity Gas Furnace
  • Large 50” LED TVs and an AM/FM/Bluetooth stereo w/HDMI pass-through
  • Oversized MAX living room slide-out
  • Winegard 360 Air 4G Antenna
  • Price: Starting at $32,995

Have you found your favorite travel trailer with an outdoor kitchen?

With so much to offer inside, it can be tough to choose the best travel trailer for your family.

But these travel trailers bring so much more to the table by adding an outdoor kitchen so that you can cook your meals outside.

All of them have spacious power awnings to protect you from the elements, so that you can create delicious meals outside, rain or shine.

Below is the floor plan for the 291BHK.

Below is a photo of the outdoor kitchen available on the KZ Sportsmen.

KZ Sportsmen Outdoor Kitchen

It has a granite counter-top, two-burner stove, faucet and, sink. It also sports a small refrigerator to keep your drink nice and cold. Over its a nice little outdoor set-up for those days you prefer to cook outside.

(5) floor plans with an outside kitchen are available on the Jayco Jayflight SLX. The plans are the following:

Jayco Jayflight SLX with outdoor kitchen

We definitely like the look of the Jayco outdoor kitchen. It has a very nice fridge, not one of those small ones that can only hold a few cans. The two-burner stove is also very nice and so is the counter-top. Plenty of cabinet storage and a sink add to the overall functionality.

The Dutchmen Aspen Trail has (10) floorplans that include an outside kitchen. The floor plans are the following:

Dutchmen Aspen Trail with outdoor kitchen

Not one of the better outside kitchen for travel trailers that Aspen Trail kitchen is at least functional. The fridge is rather small and the sink looks a bit cheap. Nevertheless, it does what it’s supposed to do.

Another Jayco on our list is the White Hawk . This model has (9) floorplans with outside kitchens. The models are as follows:

Jayco White Hawk outside kitchen

Though I am personally not a big fan of the small refrigerator I have to give Jayco props on the design and look of the outdoor kitchen on the White Hawk. The two-burner stove and the fairly large sink are excellent for outdoor cooking.  The storage space is small but appears ample.

The Coachmen Apex is a lightweight travel trailer that offers outside kitchen in several of their floorplans. The following have outside kitchens that include a sink, stove, and refrigerator or camp kitchens that only have a stove.

  • 208BHS – camp kitchen
  • 215RBK – outside kitchen
  • 245BHS – camp kitchen
  • 300BHS – outside kitchen
  • 250RLS – outside refrigerator only
  • 265RBSS – camp kitchen
  • 269RBKS – camp kitchen
  • 287BHSS – camp kitchen
  • 289TBSS – camp kitchen
  • 300LE – outside kitchen

On the Coachmen the outside kitchen is like the photo below:

Coachmen Apex Outside Kitchen

The camp kitchen is pictured below. You will notice it does not have a stove slideout like the one above, but it does give you the counter-space to simply place one on top.

Coachmen Apex outside kitchen

We much prefer the outside kitchen rather than the camp kitchen. However, either one will work just fine and with (10) floor plans available with outside kitchens you are bound to find one you like.

Highland Ridge RV offer several models of travel trailers with outdoor kitchens. You can view all of their models here , for now, we’ll introduce you to the Highland Ridge Light. The Light is available in (4) floor plans with outdoor kitchens.

Below is the floorplan for the LT275RLS.

Highland Ridge Light with outdoor kitchen

The outdoor kitchen includes a 2-burner stove and a small fridge. There is no counter space so you will need a folding table to set up for cooking.

The Keystone Outback is more than just a travel trailer, its a toy hauler travel trailer. The Outback offers a couple of floor plans with outdoor kitchens. They are the following:

Below is the floor plan for the 325BH.

Travel trailers with outside kitchens

The Keystone Outback as a flip-out stove, a nice sized fridge, a sink and a little bit of counter space. Overall this is a very nice set-up that is indeed quite functional. You will enjoy cooking outside as it offers plenty of storage space as well.

The last travel trailer on our list of the 9 we chose with outdoor kitchens is the Crossroads Volante. The Volante floor plans with outdoor kitchens are as follows:

Below is the floorplan for the VL25BH showing the location of the outside kitchen.

Crossroads Volante

The Volante offers up as nest little outdoor kitchen with a refrigerator, sink, and two-burner stove. It does offer a little bit of counter space but not much so a small table for prepping food is highly recommended.

RV Outdoor Kitchen Must-Haves

Check out the video below for a few things you should have with your outdoor kitchen.

Having an outside kitchen on our travel trailer is something we think is awesome. There will be days you would rather be outside preparing a meal and the outdoor kitchen makes it easy.

11 Trailers With Amazing Outdoor Kitchens

Trailers with Outdoor ktichen

Outdoor kitchens are convenient while camping for their ability to have your kitchen outside especially when the weather is hot or not missing out on the action around the campsite while getting dinner ready. The style of outdoor kitchens varies greatly depending on your travel trailer. While a lot of units don’t have one at all, some are quite small and basic, while others are full functional kitchens.

This is a great option to have on your trailer if you require additional cooking space or simply washing up without needing to go inside. This can even have the benefit of making your set up easier. If yours contains a cooktop and additional counter space, there will be less you need to set up and take down such as tables and a grill.

Deciding On An Outdoor Kitchen

When choosing a trailer, first off, decide if an outdoor kitchen is on your ‘must-have’ list or not. If it is, then you need to consider what needs to be included in this kitchen? Does it need to have a refrigerator? What about a sink or a built-in cook-top? All of these factors play a role in the final choice for your trailer. While you may never use your microwave for anything more than a storage box for your bread, the next person may insist on this for heating up left-overs or thawing their meat.

The appliances and set up of the area can easily sway the amount in which you use it. If you are intending for this to act as your primary cooking station, then you will want to look at one of the larger kitchens. These will have more storage space as well as counter space. It will also offer a larger refrigerator. If you simply want a small beverage fridge or a place for a quick wash up before entering the unit, there may be a smaller, simpler kitchen that is better suited for your needs.

Remember, the size of the camper doesn’t necessarily determine the size of the outdoor kitchen. Some of the smaller models are still very practical in their space usage. However, you should be aware that appliances such as the refrigerator and microwave are 110V and will only work when plugged into a power source. Unlike the refrigerator inside the camper, the outdoor one will not keep cool by running off the propane.

The 11 travel trailers that have amazing outdoor kitchens

Let’s go through all their features and why they are great, as well as anything that we aren’t a fan of.

Palomino Puma 32FBIS

  • Jayco White Hawk 26 RK
  • Jay Flight SLX 8 242BHS

Grand Design Solitude 310GK

  • Winnebago 2020 Hike H172BH
  • Explorer Aurora 34BHTS

Cruiser Embrace EL310

Mesa ridge mr322rls, prime time lacrosse 3360bi, coachmen rv apex ultra-lite 300bhs, keystone outback 330rl travel trailer.

So lets get going here. First up is…

Palino Puma 32FBIS

This Palomino Puma features an outdoor kitchen with nearly as many features as the indoor one. The only thing missing from this unit is an outdoor oven! This is literally the ideal kitchen to do all your cooking to keep the odors outside or not having to disappear to make dinner from the outside action. There are so many things they did right in the Palomino that it’s hard to list them all off here.

  • The doorway pops up to create a roof for shelter
  • Outdoor kitchen is located close to the door
  • Pull out Induction cooktop
  • Unobstructed sink
  • Dorm-sized refrigerator
  • Plenty of drawer & cupboard space
  • Outdoor electrical outlet
  • Large countertop area
  • Well Lit outdoor kitchen area
  • Only one induction burner
  • No outdoor entertainment

Conclusion:

This kitchen is a nice standard for outdoor kitchens. It literally has everything you need outside to do your cooking except for an oven, but do you really need an oven? Having another induction burner would be nice or if it was propane, then you could use it for dry camping as well. This is by far the best kitchen out there for outdoor cooking.

Jayco WhiteHawk 26RK 2021

Jayco White Hawk 26 RK 2021

This outdoor kitchen has been revamped in 2021, it comes with a slide out sink and burner and a grill. This is the only models we have seen that has both, they are usually one or the other. This is ideal if you want to do outdoor cooking part time, while you still have the larger fridge and stove inside. The improvements over the 2020 model is the addition of counter space next to the fridge. The awning covers the outdoor cooking area and is one of the smaller outdoor kitchens, but still a nice size for this size of trailer.

  • slide out cooktop & sink
  • Slide out propane grill
  • Located under the awning
  • Electrical outlet
  • Lite outdoor kitchen area
  • Lots of counter space
  • Lack of cupboards for storage
  • No microwave

he improvements definitely make this a model worthwhile if you want the outdoor cooking space as well as the indoor. It’s well designed to accent the indoor kitchen.

Jay Flight SLX 8 242BHS 2021

Jay Flight SLX 8 242BHS 2021

This is another one of the more compact outdoor kitchens. It has a small pull out which contains both a cooktop as well as a sink. There is a long drawer running underneath the length of both of these. In addition, there is also a small 2 foot cube style refrigerator for a few drinks or condiments.

  • Slide out 2 large Lp burners with sink & water
  • 2 x 2 foot Fridge
  • Easy slide-in-Slide-out setup
  • inset counter space
  • Low height counter space
  • Not covered by the awning or have a covering

One of the biggest things that seem to be missing from this particular kitchen is any form of shelter from the weather. This is not located underneath the awning, nor does the door fold out above it in order to provide any sort of shelter. It’s ideal for those warm days when you want to cook outside.

Grand Design Solitude 310GK

This outdoor kitchen is one of the more unique designs. It’s a 5th wheel so keep that in mind. The sink and cooktop both completely pull out of an under storage area leaving the compartment empty with only a single arm attaching the system to the trailer. There is also a table as a part of this set up which folds down to give this unit the title in outdoor counter space. Remember this is an optional feature. Together, this creates an “L” shape coming off the side of your camper which allows everything to be accessible and, as a result, is perfect for prepping your dinner.

  • Pull out kitchen with stove, sink, cook top
  • has a grill
  • tucks away nicely & easily
  • Under awning near the stairs
  • missing outdoor fridge
  • on the small side
  • no microwave
  • no cupboard space

While this kitchen doesn’t have any additional cupboard space, because the entire system pulls out of the storage area, you can use this area for keeping some items but only while the kitchen is set up. However, these will need to be removed when the kitchen is put away since this is the area where it is stored. There is also no refrigerator. Due to this, anything that needs to be kept cold will still have to be kept indoors.

Winnebago 2020 Hike

Winnebago 2020 Hike H172BH, H210RB, H215HS

This may be the smallest size of camper that we are looking at today, however, don’t let this fool you. The outdoor kitchen on this unit matches its size yet is simple and practical. The door to the kitchen opens upward and latches onto the wall of the trailer to ensure it doesn’t fall down in the wind. Once opened, a small cooktop and sink combo slide out, similar to that of a drawer for easy access.

  • The small, compact size
  • One Slide for entire kitchen
  • Has a cooktop & sink
  • Easy setup and takedown
  • No counter space
  • No additional storage space
  • Not covered
  • No refrigerator

Due to the compact size of the camper, there is only a limited amount of space that can be offered for this kitchen. As a result, you will need to set up additional tables if you wish to prep your meal or simply set up your plates outdoors. Another thing to keep in mind with this model, is that it is not located underneath the awning nor is the door held up to create any sort of roof. As a result, you will not find any relief from elements such as the weather and may need to set up an additional tarp or canopy for coverage.

Forest River Explorer Aurora 34BHTS

Forest River Explorer Aurora 34BHTS

This is a mid-sized outdoor kitchen. It contains a dorm-style, energy-efficient refrigerator. There is also a pull-out cooktop that can simply be stowed pushed back inside when it is not in use so that it isn’t sticking out taking up unnecessary space. On the counter behind this stove, situated to the right is a simple kitchen sink set up. Above, you will find two large, double door cabinets. These are perfect for storing those constantly used spices, or dishes. As a bonus, anything that you choose to store in this area can remain here even when the trailer is put away and in motion. In addition, there is an outlet located on the sidewall. This is great for any extra luxuries you wish to bring along such as a coffee maker, ice maker, or simply to charge your cell phone.

  • Covered outdoor Kitchen
  • Energy-efficient A/C  refrigerator
  • lots of cabinets
  • lots of counter space
  • Solid wood cabinets
  • A/C power outlet
  • Light over kitchen area
  • Cook top is not fix, but that could be a plus as well
  • sink is located in the middle
  • No microwave oven
  • Could have a little better layout

Though this layout is not perfect, it does have a lot to offer for an outdoor kitchen. It’s not perfect, but does offer plenty for someone who likes the outdoor cooking space. The size is quite large in comparison to many others.

Cruiser Embrace EL310

The Cruiser Embrace utilizes an energy-efficient refrigerator. Requiring 110 volts with a 15 amp plug to use, this dorm-sized fridge is enough to handle all your refreshments for the weekend as well as most condiments as well as some food that you might be interested in cooking up shortly. There are three large upper cabinets as well as 2 lower drawers, which offer plenty of additional storage space. There is a sink located right beside the fridge with a small counter space on the opposite side of it. Below the right side counter is a pull-out cooktop

  • Energy-efficient A/C powered refrigerator
  • Lots of cupboard space
  • Lots of drawer space
  • Pull-out cookstove hidden under counter
  • Outdoor Power A/C outlet
  • Light lights up outdoor cooking area
  • Nice size Sink
  • The overall layout could have been better designed
  • The cookstove is in front of only counter space

Overall this outdoor kitchen is nice, but the overall layout could be improved, with the stove maybe on a swivel arm to get it out of the way once pulled out so that the counter space could be utilized more frequently while cooking. There isn’t much this kitchen is missing other than maybe a microwave or a spot for your air fryer, crockpot or pressure cooker.

Mesa Ridge MR322RLS

The Mesa Ridge MR322RLS is equipped with a fair sized outdoor kitchen. The hatch door opens up and becomes the shelter for the outdoor kitchen. The first thing you notice is the large storage cabinet above. Underneath the cabinet is a light and an A/C power outlet for the fridge, which leaves one more outlet free for another small appliance. The simple sink is located to the left-hand side of this with a small countertop in the middle and a small fridge to the right. Undeath the fridge is a pull out area where a griddle is located for outdoor cooking. This makes for a nice little kitchen.

  • A large overhead cabinet
  • Pull-out cooktop griddle
  • The door becomes the shelter
  • The light over the sink
  • An A/C outlet over the counter space.
  • The griddle doesn’t block access to the sink or counter space
  • The cooktop is in front of the refrigerator
  • The counter is a bit small
  • fridge is a bit small

The biggest concern of this kitchen is that you might have to reach over the griddle stove to reach into the fridge. Other than that this is a solid little outdoor kitchen with plenty of features to do most of your outdoor cooking.

PrimeTime LaCrosss 3360BI

This outdoor kitchen is one of the rare kitchens that come with a large 40 inch TV and speakers as well as a large fridge. It comes with a nice sized counter space and a slide in gas grill. The door functions as a cover for the kitsch as well. While there is only one drawer.

  • Outdoor television
  • Outdoor sound system
  • Large fridge
  • Pull out cooktop, BBQ grill
  • Door functions as shelter for the kitchen
  • Half the counter space is right in front of the cooktop
  • No sink or water
  • Lack of cupboard space

Due to the pull-out cooktop being located right in front of the counter space, you will either have to reach over this (it could be hot) or you will need to push it in for better access. This is inconvenient for if you are trying to cook but still want to use the space for additional prep work or for laying out other items. Also, since the television is right over the top of the counter space, you will need to be cautious as there is a good chance of making a mess on the screen. You will also be in the way while cooking for anyone who is trying to view the show behind you.

Coachman RV Apex Ultra-lite 300BHS

Credit: Coachman RV

The Coachmen RV Apex Ultra-Lite 300BHS comes equipped with a larger outdoor kitchen. The area includes 1 extra drawer as well as a flip-down panel which leads to underneath the sink for easy access. It contains a dorm-sized mini-fridge and a separate sink for washing up with ease. This is great for families with young children who want to do a quick clean up before eating without the risk of muddying the inside of your unit. There’s also a pull-out drawer that contains your grill. Overhead, there is a large cabinet. This unit is handy in that it allows extra cooking and a storage area that can be used even when not set up. The outlet located on the back wall is great for charging cell phones and other devices as well as hooking up additional appliances such as a coffee maker.

  • Extra drawer space & cupboard space
  • Outdoor sink
  • Pull-out grill the tucks away neatly
  • Door opens to shelter outdoor kitchen
  • Easy access to an outlet
  • No burners if want to cook outside

This kitchen has plenty of space and is well designed. The only thing missing about this is that it doesn’t have any burners if you want to do all your cooking outside.

Keystone Outback 330RL

The Keystone Outback is a leader in extra cupboard space contained in the outdoor kitchen. It has 2 large upper cupboards which each offer tons of extra room for everything from groceries, to dishes, to highly used cooking spices, and everything in between. This contains a dorm-sized refrigerator on one side with a pull out drawer located underneath it. There is also plenty of counter space with an additional leaf that lifts when the set up is complete to make the area even wider. The sink is located to the right-hand side of the counter. There is also another ‘countertop’ that swings out further to the right so that it is not covering this sink which supports a cooktop. This ensures easy access to everything whether you are using the cooktop or not since it is not situated in front of anything in the kitchen. There is also space for the BBQ to hook up to the rear bumper. This is also located off to the side and thus, not blocking access to anything. This BBQ can connect to the propane system for the rest of your camper meaning there is no need to haul an additional tank around.

  • Door shelters kitchen area
  • Plenty of storage space
  • Dorm sized fridge
  • 2 burner stove slide in
  • Outdoor light in kitchen area
  • Cable outlet for TV
  • No Microwave

This kitchen almost has it all! Other than a BBQ, sink and microwave oven. Other than that it’s a solid choice for a travel trailer with an outdoor kitchen.

There are many great styles of outdoor kitchens. Choosing which one will best fit your family really depends on your needs as well as your style of camping. If you are never hooked up to a power source, an outdoor refrigerator and microwave are probably not on the top of your priority list. However, if you are intending to stay for an extended period of time, you may just want to have access to the outdoor television and sound system. For more tips on what to look for when purchasing a travel trailer , check out this link. It provides some great tips and insight on what will work best for you.

Or perhaps you simply don’t want to have to haul a cookstove in and out of your trailer every time you set up. This may make the smaller outdoor kitchens with just a stove and sink perfect for you. Don’t let the size of the unit or kitchen cloud your judgment of its usefulness. After all, it would be a waste to pay for the extras on these units just to find out that you aren’t utilizing these features.

12 RV Outdoor Kitchen Mods You Need To Try

RVs have exploded in popularity and the ever-changing technology they have to offer continues to blow us away, with offerings like outdoor kitchens helping to greatly expand the functionality and enjoyment your RV can provide your family.

Because RVs are a very personal space, everyone has their own needs – even for their outdoor kitchen!

We’ve put together this list of the best RV outdoor kitchen mods you need to consider when creating your perfect cooking space.

Add An Outdoor Sink And Table

rv travel trailers with outdoor kitchens

Some RVs and toy haulers don’t come with an outdoor kitchen, but they may have a recess for an outdoor TV or storage.

One option is to get a fish cleaning table that includes a sink, and install a quick connect shower faucet, hooking it up to the table when you need running water.

You’ll need to be comfortable cutting into the side of your trailer when doing this and you can use a vibrating tool to get the job done with clean cuts.

The other option is to run a hose from the outdoor shower to your sink’s faucet if you’re not okay with cutting into your camper.

You can keep a 5-gallon bucket for catching the waste water from the sink.

All in all, this is an inexpensive RV outdoor kitchen modification that will get you running water outside.

Substitute An Electric Frying Pan For Your Griddle

RV Outdoor Kitchen Mods Electric Frying Pan

Don’t have a sweet outdoor griddle, or maybe the weather isn’t cooperating?  Grab an electric frying pan with a lid to cook your bacon or sausage.

It fits easily on most outdoor tables due to it’s small footprint and hooks up easy to your electric.

If using it inside, just use it under your vented fan on the stove inside with the fan on and you’re cooking!

Road-Proof Your Fridge

RV Fridge Strap

Sometimes if you have a lot of cans or bulky items in your fridge, the door can get jostled open and cause a spill or keep the fridge door open, allowing all your stuff to get warm.

A cheap and easy fix is to take a childproofing strap and secure it to the fridge door – this takes only a minute and will prevent future fridge problems while you’re on the road.

Critter-Proof Your Outdoor Kitchen

Vent Hole Covers in RV

Some outdoor RV kitchens have vent holes for the refrigerator so it can run with the outside door closed, or other holes under the grill slide to allow wire runs.

Unfortunately, these holes are perfect for mice and other pests to get in to, so you’ll need to cover them with round screen vent plugs or with an expanding insulating foam.

Upgrade Your RV Grill

rv travel trailers with outdoor kitchens

Many of the off-the-line RV accessories like outdoor grills aren’t always the best, so you will get a lot of bang for your buck by swapping out the stock grill in your RV outdoor kitchen.

Just make sure the grill you get can fit on the slide-out brackets and isn’t too tall or wide for the grill compartment.

As long as it’ll fit within those dimensions, you can use L-brackets to keep the grill in place on the slides so you can get a higher quality grill experience.

The images above are from someone swapping out their grill with a griddle, but the same process applies.

Turn Your Outdoor Grill Shelf Into A Multi-Purpose Table

Some outdoor grills fold up into the side of the RV when not in use, which is handy, but this is multi-purpose space that’s begging to be used in different ways for extra convenience.

Many grills sit in a plastic shelf/tub combo that may have a sink or basin embedded in it, too.

Remove the shelf from the supporting swing-out door and add some braces to hold whatever else you’re using in place.

Now that the “tub” or plastic stove holder is free from the door, you can now use it as a spot to cook on a griddle or to put a TV on for outdoor use.

Make Your Own Customized Kitchen Galley

rv travel trailers with outdoor kitchens

We love the level of customization RVers are willing to go to with their RV outdoor kitchen mods, and one of the best ways is by taking a standard camp or small folding table, and setting up the underbelly to connect to the low pressure propane outputs on your camper.

The trinity of the griddle , Weber Baby Q grill , and a 3-burner propane stove makes sure you can handle any cooking situation thrown at you when you’re RVing!

Uplevel Your Outdoor Stovetop

Many RV outdoor stovetops are weak and lots of folks don’t like cooking quite that close to the trailer.

Many RVers love the 2 Burner Camp Chef stovetop and a small portable BBQ like the Weber Baby Q for a great multi-purpose setup that you can park on a table a safe distance away from your RV.

As a bonus, you can just get a griddle top like the Camp Chef XL Griddle that fits right on your two burner stovetop.

Add A Slide-Out Grill To Your RV Outdoor Kitchen

rv travel trailers with outdoor kitchens

The Big Green Egg MiniMax, Weber Baby Q, Traeger Scout, and Weber Q 2200 are all RV favorites for grilling.

You can add a belly storage slide in your lower storage compartment and mount the grill there for slide-out use.

Add some backer board and foil liner as a heat shield in the slide, and once the grill is cool you can easily push it back in.

Drill a hole and add a funnel/hook combo underneath for a bucket to catch drippings.

Expand Your RV Outdoor Kitchen Cooking Options With A Griddle

RV Griddle

RVers rave about the 22” Blackstone griddle for it’s easy cooking options and plenty of surface space.

If you don’t want to go with a dedicated griddle, you can easily get a griddle cooktop to use on your outdoor stove to make some mean breakfast meals.

Make It Easy On Yourself With Outdoor RV Kitchen Gadgets

rv travel trailers with outdoor kitchens

There are plenty of ways to cook food outdoors when enjoying your RV, and luckily there are so many gadgets out there to take advantage of.

One of the easiest and most affordable RV outdoor kitchen mods you can do is add an Instant Pot , air fryer , or tabletop ice maker to your setup!

The bonus on these items is that they can be used both indoors and outdoors for extra convenience.

Create An RV Kitchen Kit Or Chuck Box To Organize Everything

RV Kitchen Kit Outdoor Mod

We’ve seen people create chuck boxes (aka kitchen organizers) out of everything from cabinets mounted on sawhorses, to front-opening toolboxes, to all-wood options.

The main thing here is that it gives you a space to easily set up your outdoor RV kitchen quickly and have access to all the stuff you need like spices, pots, pans, utensils, and more, and then can go back into storage in a snap.

Look online for chuck box plans and make sure whatever route you try has lots of drawers and storage space, and that the chuck box will fit in your designated storage area.

Easy Add-Ons To Up Your RV Outdoor Kitchen Organization

RV Outdoor Kitchen Mods Towel Ring And Spice Rack

Adding simple items like spice racks, towel holders, and collapsible bowls and measuring cups will make your RV outdoor cooking experience that much better.

What’s great is that these additions are super affordable and very easy to accomplish!

What Counties in Idaho Allow Tiny Houses – Rules & Regulations You Need To Consider

Idaho

Since Idaho has embraced the International Residential Code’s Appendix Q, which establishes guidelines for tiny houses, it is among the states in the union most accommodating to tiny homes. However, this does not imply that you may construct or leave your little house parked wherever you are in the state.

The regulations and policies of the many counties and cities in Idaho might impact your small home project. This post will discuss which Idaho counties permit small homes, the factors to consider before constructing one, and where to buy a tiny home .

Can You Make a Tiny House in Idaho Your Main Residence?

Yes, if you fulfill the building standards, tiny houses that fall within the site-built, modular, or manufactured housing categories may be used as permanent residences in Idaho. However, you can reside in an RV home for 60 days in some counties. After the 60-day mark, you will obtain a daily residency permit.

What Counties in Idaho Allow Tiny Houses?

Because each county is allowed to modify the current state building rules to meet the unique demands of the area, there are differences between the many variants of the building regulations.

Gem County is especially welcoming to those who own mobile small houses. To deal with the surge of individuals who wish to live in their tiny house on wheels long-term, which is otherwise restricted by the state laws in Idaho, Gem County has created its code .

Although the county recognizes the necessity for autonomous, temporary dwelling quarters within the community, it supports main settlements within permanent structures. The requirements are:

  • Yard measurements: The yard still conforms to the measurements mandated by the zoning ordinance for newly constructed buildings within that specific zone.
  • Lot Area: The minimum lot area needed for new construction in that zone is the same as the lot area per household.
  • Floor size: Each housing unit has a floor size that is not less than what is needed for new construction in that zone.
  • Compliance: All other applicable codes and ordinances are complied with by the conversion.

The guidelines for residing in a mobile home, recreational vehicle, or tiny house on wheels apply to using an RV for more than 30 days as the principal dwelling on land is not part of a permitted RV or manufactured home park in Gem County. The following are some relevant points:

  • RVs may be the principal dwelling on the same property for a maximum of one year. If the RV is properly shielded from public view, the administrator may grant a one-year time extension.
  • Before using an RV as a place to live, any property owner who places an RV under this section must apply for an RV residence permit and pay the applicable price.
  • An enclosed structure cannot accommodate an RV used as the primary dwelling.
  • A new address will be given if there is not one already (unless the RV will remain there for less than 30 days).
  • The RV must use a wastewater system that the health department has authorized or deemed suitable.

Aiming to address the housing issue around Boise and other communities, Ada County put out a plan to overcome the limitations imposed by state legislation and increase accessibility to tiny homes for long-term residents.

The proposed program will fight state regulations that prohibit residents from permanently residing in a tiny house or a tiny house on wheels for the benefit of its members.

In theory, the pilot program would allow tiny homes to be placed in metropolitan neighborhoods, provide financial incentives to homeowners to construct supplementary dwelling units that they could rent out for reasonable prices, and set up a home-sharing website that would pair up underprivileged tenants with hosts of spare rooms.

Idaho Tiny House Laws: Local Zoning Regulations

The International Residential Code (IRC) is the model for the nation’s municipal building regulations. Idaho has defined statewide standards for several types of small homes, even if local governments may have their ordinances and regulations related to tiny houses .

Moscow City

Furthermore, Moscow’s mobile home parks now permit small houses on wheels, and they enjoy year-round access to full-time connections.

Any homes built as modular structures are subject to inspection and must adhere to the One-and-Two-Family Dwelling Building Code. The City of Boise provides permission for these modular homes constructed on a foundation on the property. A building permit and plan review permission are necessary for any auxiliary construction or additions built on the property.

Garden City

The community organizes actions to improve Garden City as a welcoming place for small home enthusiasts. In two of the city’s zoning areas where small house occupancy was previously prohibited, the city modified its tight zoning law to permit tiny dwellings.

1. Site Built

It is a structure built on the site of its intended function. It is not meant or made to be relocated.

2. Manufactured Home

Constructed to be 40 feet or longer, transportable, meet HUD manufactured house building and safety requirements, and intended for use as a residence with or without a permanent foundation, it must be subject to inspections.

3. Modular Buildings

A closed structure is partially or fully prefabricated or built somewhere other than the building site is referred to as a modular house, except for manufactured homes.

As well as modular homes, manufactured homes need building permits, and plan review permission is necessary for any auxiliary constructions and additions constructed on the property.

Tiny House Regulations And Rules In Idaho

The laws and guidelines were modified to better suit the homes in each county. According to Appendix Q of the International Residential Code, a tiny house in Idaho is typically less than 400 square feet. The minimal floor size required for a tiny house in the state is 150 square feet.

Permanent Structure Rules

A floor level used for living or sleeping that is more than thirty inches above the main floor, open to it on one or more sides, and has a ceiling lower than six feet eight inches.

  • Minimum Size and Measurements

Lofts must have a minimum floor size of 35 square feet and a minimum horizontal dimension of 5 feet.

  • Effect of Height on Loft Area

A portion of the loft cannot be included toward the minimum needed size of the loft if it has a sloping ceiling and is less than three feet from the completed floor to the finished ceiling.

A small home’s habitable areas and passageways must have ceilings that are at least 6 feet 8 inches high. For example, the ceiling height of restrooms, toilets, and kitchens.

Emergency Escape

Tiny homes must follow Emergency Escape and Rescue Openings.

  • Windows for Egress Roof Access

If the egress roof access window meets the minimum opening area criteria, it must be built so that the bottom of the aperture is no higher than 44 inches above the loft floor.

Temporary Structure Rules

Motor homes, fifth-wheel trailers, travel trailers, park model recreational vehicles, folding camping trailers, and truck campers are examples of recreational vehicles, according to the Division of Building Safety.

  • Owners of small houses on wheels must get the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) to obtain a permit.
  • According to the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 1192 Standard for Recreational Vehicles, the mobile tiny home has to meet requirements.

Transitional Strucutre Rules

In areas of Idaho, tiny dwellings are the answer to the housing issue and homelessness. Even though the state has transitional projects, there are currently no regulations for transitional tiny home construction.

A scheme for transitory housing was proposed. The program’s goal was to construct small houses as possibilities for those in need of a place to live, including single mothers, veterans, and those in recovery from addictions. However, this program was rejected by the citizens.

In Idaho, Where Can I Build A Tiny House?

Follow the specific requirements of the county or city. A small house must have at least one acre of land when it is on private land. Your tiny home will be handled as a modular home if it is the only residence on the land. It could be constructed in:

  • Private properties
  • Tiny house communities

Tiny House Builders Near Me

Why dwell in the little town of Idaho? Geographically, the state offers a great deal. Throughout the state, rivers, mountains, and farming dominate the terrain. There are jagged mountains, sparkling lakes, broad plains, and lush green slopes around Idaho.

Idaho’s tiny living offers the best of both worlds: urban and rural lifestyles. You do not need to look for builders in your location because, with Great Lakes Tiny Homes, you can find the house of your dreams with its diverse models and nationwide shipping.

Furthermore, Great Lake Tiny Homes is a part of the RV Industry Association (RVIA). This certification is living proof of high production standards and compliance with safety, building, and legal regulations for tiny houses.

Do I Need a Certified Builder?

Yes, you need an RVIA, but what is it? The acronym for Recreational Vehicle Industry Association is a certification indicating that the house satisfies fire, plumbing, electrical, building, and heating safety standards.

Your tiny house demonstrates it satisfies industrial safety requirements with the RVIA mark.

Recognition and acceptance

All parties involved recognize and accept an RVIA-certified small house, such as zoning authorities, insurance companies, and financial institutions.

Because RVIA-certified tiny houses exceed safety and quality criteria, getting insurance coverage for them is easy.

In the same way, purchasing or developing a tiny house has more financing alternatives with the RVIA certification.

Nationwide Access

In any state where tiny houses are permitted, homeowners can construct RVIA-certified homes. The RVIA seal assures zoning and construction code compliance.

Resale Value

Because of these benefits, potential customers could be more likely to purchase an RVIA-certified tiny house.

Note: Only manufacturers with permits, like Great Lake Tiny Homes from the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA), can build approved tiny homes.

What Is the Size of a Tiny House’s Kitchen?

While tiny houses are modest by nature, some are considerably smaller than others. In these situations, a small kitchen of 30 to 50 square feet might be adequate. However, you might go for 60 to 70 square feet if your home has enough room for you to grow.

Should I Consider A Strong Foundation?

A solid foundation is considered while building a small house in Idaho. Firstly, you decide if you want the house to be movable. For this reason, most tiny houses are built on travel trailers, in addition to the legal issues surrounding small dwellings that were previously discussed. There are several ways to build tiny dwellings, such as on concrete slab foundations, post-and-beam, stilt, or skid foundations.

Why Are Idaho Tiny Homes So Popular?

Living in a little home in Idaho is fantastic. Farmland, mountains, and rivers dominate the natural scenery. Residents of Idaho love waking up to stunning scenery, a booming economy, and a wealth of recreational options.

Living small is a viable choice for people who wish to live frugally since municipal construction standards and zoning laws have been much more accommodating to smaller homes in recent years.

With the International Residential Code’s Appendix Q, which establishes guidelines for tiny dwellings, Idaho State presents options for those passionate about tiny houses. Nonetheless, some Idaho counties and cities have their own set of rules and regulations. Gem County, Ada County, Moscow, Boise, and Garden City are a few of the counties and localities that permit tiny homes.

Therefore, before purchasing or constructing your tiny house, do your research and confirm with the local authorities. You can take advantage of tiny living in Idaho by adhering to the laws and guidelines.

Tiny House Laws & Building Codes Idaho

tiny house building codes in Idaho

However, the state of Idaho also has its own code through the Division of Building Safety ( Read the PDF here ) that addresses regulations surroundings tiny houses. So, what should you defer to, how do you know which laws apply to your own tiny house?

Are Tiny Houses On Wheels Legal In Idaho?

In Idaho, tiny houses on wheels are classified as recreational vehicles. According to the codes established by the Idaho Division of Building Safety ( Read the PDF here ), these homes can be one of the following:

  • A motor home
  • A travel trailer
  • A fifth-wheel trailer
  • A park model recreational vehicle*
  • A truck camper
  • A folding camping trailer

*A park model recreational vehicle is built on a single chassis with no more than 400 square feet in area. More on park model recreational vehicles can be found here .

For any of the aforementioned vehicles, the following regulations must be followed so that your tiny house on wheels is legal in the state of Idaho, as outlined in House Bill No. 114 ( Read the PDF here ):

  • You must contact Idaho Transportation Department (ITD) to get a permit for your THOW
  • Your tiny house on wheels must comply with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1192 Standard for Recreational Vehicles

Can In Live In My Tiny House On Wheels In Idaho?

Whether or not you can legally live in your tiny house on wheels as a permanent form of housing is being debated across many states, especially as the tiny house craze becomes more popularized.

In cities throughout Idaho, RV-style and manufactured homes, or any home that’s on wheels and is mobile, can’t be set up in a residential zone. It has to go in an RV park in order for the home to be legal.

This can feel pretty limiting to tiny homeowners who want to live permanently in their tiny house on wheels. Idaho isn’t known to be accommodating to this lifestyle. However, there is some hope for people who want to use their tiny house on wheels as their full-time home.

There are several independent cities and counties throughout Idaho that have created workarounds to this obstacle, so searching for property within those limits may be a good idea for homeowners. See more county and city specific information below.

Additionally, you can always park your tiny house on public space. It may not be ideal, but it is a way to get around the limitation. Defer to the Idaho RV and Campgrounds Association to get ideas about where you can legally travel with your tiny house on wheels.

Are Tiny Houses On Foundation Legal In Idaho?

Tiny homes on foundation fall into a separate legal category than tiny homes on wheels, and are classified as family dwellings. Like many others states that are up with the current tiny home trends, Idaho defers to Appendix Q from the 2018 International Residential Code when it comes to tiny houses on foundation.

Appendix Q is applicable to tiny houses used as single-dwelling units. The appendix loosens some various requirements within the general code as they apply to houses that are 400 square feet or less. Here are some of the regulations worth noting:

  • Habitable space and hallways in tiny houses shall have a ceiling height of not less than 6 feet 8 inches.
  • Bathrooms, toilet rooms, and kitchens shall have a ceiling height of not less than 6 feet 4 inches. Obstructions such as beams, girders, ducts, and lighting shall not extend below the minimum ceiling heights mentioned above.
  • Lofts may have ceiling heights less than 6 feet 8 inches.
  • Lofts shall have a floor area of not less than 35 square feet and shall not be less than 5 feet in any horizontal dimension.
  • The loft guards shall be located along the open side of the lofts.
  • Loft guards shall not be less than 36 inches in height or one-half of the clear height to the ceiling, whichever is less.
  • Tiny houses shall meet the requirements of Section R310 in the One-and-Two-Family Dwelling Building Code for Emergency Escape and Rescue Openings . ( Read the PDF here )
  • In lofts used as sleeping rooms, egress roof access windows shall be deemed to meet the requirements of Section R310 ( Read the PDF here ).
  • Windows shall be installed such that the bottom of the opening is not more than 44 inches above the loft floor, provided the egress roof access window complies with the minimum opening area requirements of Section R310.2.1 ( Read the PDF here ).

Defer to Appendix Q to parse through the additional regulations that may be applicable to your tiny home.

Tiny House Laws in Key Idaho Counties: Local Zoning Ordinances

Made up of 44 different counties , the state of Idaho has a lot of room for variation when it comes to its building laws. Each county has the freedom to amend the statewide building laws in order to accommodate the needs of their specific county. I’ve explored some of the counties and the laws they’ve set out below.

Gem County, Idaho

Gem County is particularly accommodating to owners of tiny homes on wheels. The county has established its own ordinance to address the influx of people who want to live in their tiny house on wheels permanently, which is otherwise limited by the statewide regulations in Idaho.

The rules for using a mobile home, RV, or tiny house on wheels as a dwelling unit can be examined on the county websites’ legal codes in section 11-6-9 . These standards apply to the use of an RV as primary living quarters on property outside of a legal RV or manufactured home park for more than a 30-day period.

Here are some of the important takeaways:

  • One RV used as primary living quarters is permitted on a legal parcel that is one acre or greater in size.
  • RVs may be used as the primary living quarters for up to one year on the same property. A one-year time extension may be granted by the administrator if the RV is appropriately screened from public view.
  • A six-month, on-site inspection to ensure compliance with these standards shall be conducted by the administrator or designee.
  • All property owners siting an RV under this section are required to obtain an RV residency permit and pay the established fee prior to use of the RV as living quarters.
  • The RV shall be located to the side or rear of a primary dwelling if one exists on the property. If the RV is located on bare ground, it shall comply with all setbacks as established in section 11-5-7 .
  • No RV used as primary living quarters shall be located within an enclosed building.
  • If the RV is sited on a property with an existing address, no new address shall be issued for the RV. If there is no existing address, a new address shall be issued (unless the RV is on site for 30 days or less).
  • The RV shall utilize a wastewater system approved by and/or acceptable to the health department.
  • See section 11-5-7 for the height and area dimensions allowed.

If you are looking to use a recreational vehicle as a temporary dwelling unit and not a permanent home in Gem County, the regulations above are not intended for you. See chapter 19 of the code for information on temporary mobile dwellings.

Ada County, Idaho

In December 2021, Ada County proposed the introduction of a pilot program that would make tiny living more accessible for residents in the area in response to the housing crisis around Boise and other cities.

State laws limit citizens from living permanently in a tiny house on wheels, however, the proposed program would combat this restriction for the good of its constituents.

The pilot program would hypothetically include approving tiny homes on wheels in the city, incentives for homeowners to build accessory dwelling units to rent out at affordable rates, and a home-sharing platform to connect renters in need with those who have extra rooms in their home.

Tiny House Laws In Key Idaho Cities: Local Zoning Ordinances

Independent cities also have the power to create their own laws and addendums to the statewide laws. Many cities in Idaho have become more accommodating of tiny living in the recent years — lets take a look at some specific examples.

Moscow, Idaho

The city of Moscow has recently become more tiny-house friendly, adding specific laws that accommodate tiny homes on wheels in parks throughout Moscow.

Moscow City Council removed the six-month restriction of RVs in mobile home parks through a unanimous vote amongst the council. Additionally, tiny homes on wheels are also now allowed in mobile home parks in Moscow, and have access to full-time hookups year-round.

Boise, Idaho

The city of Boise has it figured out when it comes to tiny living. Their website contains all city building codes , as well as any additional the information you need to know about the legality of your tiny home in Boise.

The city defines a tint house as “a small residential dwelling of 400 square feet or less in floor area, excluding the loft” in accordance with Appendix Q , which their website links to and follows as a guide to the legality of tiny habitats.

Garden City, Idaho

In October 2021, Garden City mayoral candidate and developer Hannah Ball held a neighborhood meeting to make plans with their community to make Garden City a more friendly environment for those who want to live tiny.

The changes involved requesting the city amend its restrictive zoning code to allow tiny homes in two of the city’s zoning districts that did not currently allow tiny houses to be occupied.
