Apple updates Safari 15.6.1 with security fixes for macOS Big Sur and Catalina users

Apple this week released iOS 15.6.1 and macOS Monterey 12.5.1 , both with security enhancements. And to bring these security enhancements to even more users, the company today released Safari 15.6.1 for Macs running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

The update doesn’t come with any new features or major changes. Instead, it fixes an exploit in WebKit (Safari’s web engine) that could lead to arbitrary code execution. This fix was already available for users who updated their Macs to macOS Monterey 12.5.1.

However, users with older Macs that are unable to run the latest version of macOS now have access to the same security fixes in Safari.

Here’s what Apple says about the update on its website :

Available for: macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina Impact: Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.

Apple has attributed the WebKit exploit fix to an anonymous researcher.

Safari 16 coming soon to older macOS versions

With macOS Ventura, which is now available for developers and beta users, Apple has announced Safari 16 with multiple new features. The new version of Safari addresses one of the main complaints web developers have about Apple’s web browser, which is the lack of web push notifications . This means that websites and web apps can now send notifications to users even when Safari is closed.

Other new features in Safari 16 include Shared Tab Group, strong password editing, improved CSS, and  Passkeys  – a new way to authenticate to websites with Touch ID without having to create a traditional password.

Safari 16 will also be available to users of macOS Monterey and macOS Big Sur later this year, once Apple releases macOS Ventura to the public. Developers and invited users can now try out the beta version of Safari 16 for older macOS versions.

As for the Safari 15.6.1 update, it is now available via the Software Update menu within the System Preferences app.

Apple Releases Safari 15.6.1 for macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina With Important Security Fix

Apple today released Safari version 15.6.1 for the older macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina operating systems. The update includes an important security fix for a WebKit vulnerability that could lead to arbitrary code execution, according to Apple.

Apple released macOS Monterey 12.5.1 , iOS 15.6.1 , and iPadOS 15.6.1 yesterday with fixes for both WebKit and kernel vulnerabilities. As noted by Mr. Macintosh on Twitter , a fix for the kernel-related vulnerability has yet to be released for macOS Big Sur or macOS Catalina, but it's unclear if that vulnerability affects those operating systems.

I wish Apple would make Safari on iOS a standalone app so it can be updated independently of iOS

I thought theoretically they had separated most of the core apps, but I still don’t recall ever seeing an update for them outside of a full OS release or point release. And yet they still choose certain apps that can’t be uninstalled. On the iPhone I can’t think of anything that can’t be uninstalled except maybe App Store itself, but on watch and Mac ironically News for example is there to stay, like it or not.

Exactly. Shutting the whole system down for an hour to update some minor chunk of code in Safari is atrocious design.

Your post makes absolutely zero sense. The benefit is we would get app updates immediately when there are issues instead of having to wait for an entire iOS update to get them. There wouldn’t be a million different configurations, it would be exactly the same as it is now. Apps could just be updated at the same time, just like iOS updates are updated at the same time.

Apple wants everyone to update, and update fast.

Apple has officially released Safari 15.6.1 to Mac users running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

The latest update, which brings some usual bug fixes and performance improvements to the browser, also fixes a major security vulnerability that Apple has confirmed was used in the wild.

The fix, which is for WebKit, is available for users running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina. It fixes an issue where "processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution."

Apple fixed more than just Safari lately

Safari isn't the only piece of software that has been affected by the security vulnerability. iOS 15, iPadOS 15, and macOS Monterey were also affected by the issue and Apple released updates for all of them yesterday to patch the vulnerability. 

In addition to addressing the WebKit security issue, those updates also addressed a security vulnerability at the kernel level where "an application may be able to execute arbitrary code with kernel privileges. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited."

If a Safari update is available for your device, you can get it by updating or upgrading macOS, iOS, iPadOS, or visionOS.

Apple releases Safari 15.6.1 to fix zero-day bug used in attacks

Apple has released Safari 15.6.1 for macOS Big Sur and Catalina to fix a zero-day vulnerability exploited in the wild to hack Macs.

The zero-day patched today (CVE-2022-32893) is an out-of-bounds write issue in WebKit that could allow a threat actor to execute code remotely on a vulnerable device.

"Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited," warns Apple in a  security bulletin  released today.

An out-of-bounds write vulnerability is when an attacker can supply input to a program that causes it to write data past the end or before the beginning of a memory buffer.

This causes the program to crash, corrupt data, or in the worst-case scenario, remote code execution. Apple says they fixed the bug through improved bounds checking.

Apple says the vulnerability was disclosed by a researcher who wishes to remain anonymous.

This zero-day vulnerability is the  same one that was patched by Apple yesterday  for macOS Monterey and iPhone/iPads.

Apple has not provided details on how the vulnerability is being used in attacks other than saying that it "may have been actively exploited."

This is the seventh zero-day vulnerability fixed by Apple in 2022, with the previous bugs outlined below:

• In March, Apple  patched two more zero-day bugs  that were used in the Intel Graphics Driver (CVE-2022-22674) and AppleAVD (CVE-2022-22675).
• In January,  Apple patched two more actively exploited zero-days  that allowed attackers to execute code with kernel privileges (CVE-2022-22587) and track web browsing activity (CVE-2022-22594).
• In February, Apple released security updates  to fix a new zero-day bug  exploited to hack iPhones, iPads, and Macs.

Apple has released Safari 15.6.1 with an important security fix for Macs running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

The Safari update includes the same security fixes that are available in macOS Monterey 12.5.1 update for Mac users running Monterey, and iOS 15.6.1 and iPadOS 15.6.1 for iPhone and iPad. The latest macOS Ventura beta also apparently includes the same security fix.

The security update is recommended for all Mac users running macOS Big Sur and macOS Catalina.

How to Get Safari 15.6.1 on MacOS Big Sur & Catalina

• Quit out of Safari
• From the  Apple menu go to “System Preferences”
• Choose “Software Update”
• Choose to download and install Safari 15.6.1

Safari 15.6.1 is only available for MacOS Big Sur and MacOS Catalina. Mac users running MacOS Monterey will find macOS 12.5.1 available to download instead.

Mac users running earlier versions of MacOS system software won’t have a Safari update available, but can instead find protection by using a different web browser entirely, whether it’s Chrome, or Brave.

macOS users need to update to Safari 15.6.1 to close a security hole

A recent macOS Monterey update deals with a nasty security problem in WebKit. But Apple is aware many users don’t upgrade to the latest operating system versions, so it also released Safari 15.6.1. The web browser update allows anyone using older macOS versions to avoid the vulnerability.

The browser update is free and available now.

Safari 15.6.1 is available for macOS

A bug in Apple’s WebKit rendering engine discovered by a security researcher allows a malicious web page to execute code without users’ permission. Even worse, “Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited,” warns the Mac-maker.

As noted, the problem is fixed in the recent macOS Monterey 12.5.1 update . And now it also can be taken care of for computers still running macOS Big Sur or macOS Catalina, thanks to the standalone web browser update.

All that’s necessary is to install Safari 15.6.1 . Apple recommends all users of these older macOS versions do so.

The same security hole affected iPhone and iPad but it was removed by iOS 15.6.1 and iPadOS 15.6.1 , which have been available since Wednesday.

How to update Safari

To update Apple’s Mac web browser, click on the Apple menu  then choose System Preferences > Software Update . The new Safari version should be there.

Bumped to version 15.6.1, this new update to Safari is available for both macOS Catalina and macOS Big Sur users. While this update does not add anything new to the web browser, it is an extremely important release since it introduces security fixes for a WebKit vulnerability.

According to Apple :

Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited. Description: An out-of-bounds write issue was addressed with improved bounds checking.

If that completely phased you out, then let me put it in simple words - just update to Safari 15.6.1 in order to keep your online activity safe at all times. Staying on the latest version of any software at all is always a great idea.

In order to download the new update, all you have to do is go to System Preferences > Software Update . Just wait for the page to refresh, and the new update will show up in a bit. Install it whenever it shows up.

If you’ve set your Mac to automatically download and install updates, then the update should install within a day or two on its own. But of course, since Safari 15.6.1 is an extremely updated release, therefore it is a good idea to download and install it manually as quickly as possible.

Apple has released Safari 15.6.1 for macOS 11 Big Sur and 10.15 Catalina with a patch for a serious WebKit vulnerability that has been exploited in the wild.

Josh, this sentence has confused me for about 4 days. I presumed that Safari 15.6 would need updating on macOS 12.5 Monterey, but, apparently, that is not the case. I never realized that Safari could have a higher version number on earlier versions of the OS. I wish there had been an explicit statement that MacOS Monterey did not need to be updated. I kept pinging Software Update in system preferences – waiting for an update above Monterey 12.5 that never came. Perhaps I’m the only person on TidBITS who made this error; perhaps not.

That’s because it was included in the MacOS 12.5.1 update released a few days earlier. If you check the version of Safari after installing the release, you’ll notice that it’s 15.6.1, Also the release notes for the update refer to WebKit changes. Since WebKit is the base for Safari, it implies an updated Safari

It is usually quite common for updates for earlier OS’s to be released a few days after an update to the current OS. If required, those updates will provide equivalent security updates to those OS’s and other system components.

I see that 12.5.1 was released 6 days ago. However, Apple’s Software Update has #!$$ failed to provide me with that update – it says that 12.5 is the current OS. I have tried multiple times daily to get that update, but Apple ain’t serving it up to me:

I thought I was missing an update; you confirmed that. I guess I’ll have to contact Apple Support to find out why I’m not seeing the update. Thanks.

If you want to force the update, you can try using SilentKnight, downloaded from Eclectic Light Company:

The documentation is included in the download. It can force Software Update to actually perform its function.

I logged in to a different user-id on my Mac (and I didn’t log in to my Apple ID account). I was instantly able to see macOS 12.5.1. I downloaded the image and installed it.

I had no idea that availability of new OS downloads could be influenced by one’s Apple ID. That’s pretty wonky. Apple support suggested that I log in to safe mode to try to download the image; I figured trying a different User ID would be a good idea. I expressed my distress to Apple that their servers wouldn’t show me the update when logged in with my Apple ID and suggested they bump that complaint to engineering.

I fondly hope this glitch is happening to very few people.

That does seem wrong—I wonder if it was an unrelated glitch that had either gone away or was cleared by logging out. Sometimes a restart is still a useful workaround too!

You’re absolutely right. I love/hate when a support tech asks me to reboot. This time, it was a good call. I consider myself a sophisticated user, and this completely threw me off. If lots of users are missing the zero-day Safari fix, that would be a bad thing.

My situation is different because it’s the App Store rather than Software Update, but maybe Apple uses similar routines out of sight of the user. I updated Numbers and Pages while logged into one account, and I keep getting bugged to install the same updates while logged into a different account on the same computer.

Hi to all. Well known problem as I found scouring the Net for answers. Safari (Catalina) displays blue question marks on Ali express site. Also Mail shows question marks instead of pictures from Ali. iPad (iPad OS 16.7.2), iPhone (iOS 16.7.2) and even iPhone 6s (iOS 14.8.1) displays pictures fine both in Safari and Mail. So I'm forced to switch to Firefox 120.01 on Catalina to browse and purchase from Ali express. Or on the iPad or iPhone. I did all that Could find concerning the bue question marks. No results whatsoever. Is there a secret setting fro Safari. Could it be AdGuard? If so, what setting? There are a ton of them A bit lost here. Attached: screen of Safari and Firefox. Have you tried creating a new user on your mac to test if a clean and fresh safari has the same problem?

Easiest solution is to try a different browser. I keep a bunch of browsers around - Orion - Brave - Epic - Opera - Firefox - Mullvad - Dissenter - Waterfox - Microsoft Edge - Vivaldi (probably one or two more). Fishrrman's "Mac Rule Number 4": Use the right tool for the job at hand.

As announced on browserbench.org today, in collaboration with other browser engine developers, Apple’s WebKit team is excited to introduce Speedometer 3.0 , a major update that better reflects the Web of today. It’s built together by the developers of all major browser engines: Blink, Gecko, and WebKit with hundreds of contributions from companies like Apple, Google, Intel, Microsoft, and Mozilla. This post is a deep dive into how the collaborative Speedometer project improved the benchmark’s measurements methods and test content.

To recap history, in 2014, the WebKit team at Apple released the Speedometer browser benchmark , designed to measure the responsiveness of websites and web apps.

The original Speedometer simulated user interactions in web applications, driving TodoMVC sample apps written using different JavaScript frameworks to add, complete, and remove todo items. It was unlike other DOM or web app benchmarks publicly available at the time. These older benchmarks were mostly collections of micro-benchmarks, and didn’t reflect how DOM APIs were used in real web apps, or how individual APIs interacted with the rest of the web browser engine. Speedometer quickly became an important tool for performance measurement and tuning not just in WebKit but also in other browser engines.

In 2018 the WebKit team, in collaboration with Google’s Chrome team, released Speedometer 2.0 , updated to use the latest frameworks and libraries available at the time. The Speedometer benchmark has since gained even more popularity among browser engines as a guide for optimization, and among independent testers and reviewers to compare different devices, operating systems, and browsers.

Today’s release of Speedometer 3.0 marks a major step forward in web browser performance testing. It improves the accuracy of measurement and measures the performance of a wide variety of contents.

Cross-Browser Collaboration

Speedometer 3.0’s release is a result of the collaboration among browser developers to improve the Web as a whole together. Much as Interop 2024 represents joint work to test and improve standards compliance, Speedometer 3.0 is a joint effort to test and improve browser performance.

Where previous Speedometer versions were developed as part of the WebKit project, Speedometer 3.0 has been developed and released under a joint multi-stakeholder governance model including the three major engine browsers: Blink, Gecko, and WebKit, and the repository has received hundreds of open source contributions since the original announcement in December 2022 . This collaboration better ensures fairness in measurement and workload composition. And together, the group created a shared vision for the benchmark.

Improved Test Harness

We’ve improved the way Speedometer measures runtime performance. Prior Speedometer versions measured the time to run a test script synchronously as “sync” time; and the time until a zero-delay timer scheduled at the end of “sync” work fires as “async” time, as shown in the following diagram:

However, this method sometimes misses important work that browser engines do in response to script-driven changes, because synchronous tasks and the zero-delay timer are scheduled without considering the timing of rendering updates. It also didn’t capture any work frameworks delay until the next requestAnimationFrame (rAF) callback, a common technique in modern frameworks. The following diagram illustrates how important work could be missed by the time calculations.

Speedometer 3.0 takes advantage of the fact that all browser engines have adopted the HTML5 event loop model for updating the webpage rendering. It measures test scripts within a requestAnimationFrame callback as “sync” time, and the time to fire zero-delay timer scheduled in a second requestAnimationFrame as “async” time:

Because the zero-delay timer is now scheduled in a second requestAnimationFrame, it’s guaranteed to be fired after all the zero-delay timers scheduled during the synchronous portion of the test had fired. Thanks to HTML5’s event loop processing model, browser engines update the rendering of web pages after all requestAnimationFrame are called before the next zero-delay timer fires. These changes greatly improved Speedometer’s ability to accurately measure the runtime of synchronous work and asynchronous work browsers do in response to script that handles user events.

The test harness has also been rewritten to use modern JavaScript features like modules, native promises, let & const, async & await, and class syntax, which were not widely available at the time Speedometer 1.0 was first written.

Like its precursors, Speedometer 3.0 sums up the runtime taken to simulate user actions such as adding todo items, completing them, and removing them per each workload, and computes the geometric mean of the totals across different workloads. The final score is calculated as the arithmetic mean of the reciprocal of the geometric mean:

Adjustment to Score

Since Speedometer’s benchmark content was last updated in 2018, web browsers have gotten increasingly better at handling Speedometer content. Moreover, new hardware, such as Apple Silicon Macs, continues to push the boundary of what’s possible in computing. Where originally scores were scaled to be under 100, modern browsers now can score over 500 on the fastest devices. To make scores easier to compare and to make room for future improvements, we’ve adjusted the score so that a typical web browser will get a score in the 20-30 range to start out.

Updated UI Frameworks

Now let’s take a look at the test content in Speedometer 3. Like the past versions of Speedometer, version 3.0 includes TodoMVC-based todo apps that emulate adding, completing, and removing todo items. To better represent the modern Web, the most widely used JavaScript UI frameworks were identified from the HTTP Archive in March 2023:

Based on these data points, we’ve included the following JavaScript frameworks in our todo apps: Angular , Backbone , jQuery , Lit , Preact , React , React+ Redux , Svelte , and Vue . For each framework, the most commonly used version at the time was picked. Todo implementations written in vanilla JavaScript using ES5, ES6, and web components are also included.

Complex DOM Versions

In addition, Speedometer 3.0 includes “complex DOM” versions of some of the TodoMVC applications. In these complex DOM versions, each todo app is embedded inside a UI structure which mimics a web application with many deeply nested DOM nodes and plenty of CSS rules. Even though the benchmark still emulates the same set of operations, doing so in the context of more DOM elements and CSS rules adds work and captures additional performance bottlenecks.

In order to ensure the variety of performance scenarios to be tested, Speedometer 3.0 includes 6 simple DOM todo applications and 6 complex DOM todo applications.

Broader Content

Together, these changes to todo apps dramatically improved the coverage of the benchmark. But Speedometer 3.0 takes it a step further and includes entirely new kinds of applications.

Speedometer 3.0 includes two test apps that mimic typical news sites, built using the popular single page application frameworks Next.js and Nuxt . It emulates user actions such as clicking on menu items and navigating to another page in the single page app setup.

Speedometer 3.0 also includes four charting applications based on Observable Plot , chart.js , React stockcharts , and WebKit’s performance dashboards . Observable Plot and React Stockcharts are based on D3 and test manipulating SVG-based graphics. Chart.js and WebKit’s performance dashboards test drawing canvas-based graphics.

Finally, Speedometer 3.0 has added two text editing applications: a JavaScript code editor built with CodeMirror and a WYSIWYG editor built with TipTap . In both scenarios, it emulates the steps to create a new editable region, loading a large amount of text, and syntax highlighting or boldening text:

The addition of these new applications dramatically broadens the scope of what Speedometer 3.0 measures, and provide new opportunities for browser engines to optimize a broad spectrum of features like JavaScript, style, layout, graphics, and DOM.

Future Work

Today marks a remarkable milestone for the Web platform. Speedometer 3.0 sets a whole new standard for measuring web browser performance. As browser developers optimize their engines, this will expand the horizon of what Web developers can achieve in the years to come. Because the goal of the Speedometer benchmark is to reflect the real-world Web as much as possible, we’re expecting this benchmark to evolve over time. We’ll be regularly updating the list of frameworks to be tested, and periodically updating the tested framework’s versions to reflect the real world usage. after last update, Safari is very slow

After updating the system, latest Safari (version 15) is very slow and freezes all the time. How can I get back to previous one?

hi, try this go to settings menu then delete your cookies, by clear history and website data.

open safari browser. go to menu then history tab then clear history

i hope this will work for you i am using the same version but it is fresh installed not the update of previous version and it is working fine. Check the activity manager may be there is a third party program is causing problem in safari operations, remove that. as you can not uninstall it and then reinstall because its apple default browser so the second option is refresh the OS.

I have the same issue, but have traced it to my SurfEasy VPN. So long as it is not running, Safari loads and renders websites just fine. Contacted their Helpdesk, and they (of course) referred me to here. I've performed the history clearing and cookie deleting, but no luck. And I'm doubtful reinstalling Safari will be of much good.

I have tried to follow your guidance but I am confused I think. I was using Safari as I began this reply but typing was so slow I switched to a different browser and typing is no longer painful. With respect to the guidance you offer though, I am not sure to which settings menu you are referring that will allow one to delete cookies and clear history and website data? If I already have Safari open I note the option to clear my history at the bottom of the History drop down. I cleared "all history" via this method but I see no improvement in the snail's pace at which the letters typed appear on my screen. Could you please elaborate on whichever parts I have neglected to perform so that I might complete your suggested steps and hopefully return typing in Safari back to some sense of normalcy?

Today, replaced my test old iPad with a new one, Safari 15.x on it I believe. I can cry so bad. Totally useless for anything more than the average joe youtube page viewing.

On the same device, Chrome outperforms Safari big time with the same content (3D/js) and allows me to work.

Same cancer on macOS. Shame really. Things started to go bad after release 14.x.

I had a similar issue.

I deleted cookies, cache, history and all Network settings and the issue continue.

Then I deactivated the new feature in iOS 15 with iCloud+ (Private Relay (Beta)). And since I deactivated this feature, safari start to work normal again.

I have the same issue. It’s been a couple days safari is very slow. Used google chrome and pages are opening fast. I have iPhone 12 max on the latest software update.
