Scientific Name:  Lamna ditropis

Characteristics:  This Salmon Shark figure features the streamlined shape of a mackerel shark, similar to its relatives the Great White and Mako. Its paint reflects the animal's countershaded coloration: dark gray above, white below, with a smattering of gray spots marking the transition. With an open mouth full of teeth, this shark is ready to feed on some salmon!

Size:  This shark measures approximately 5 1/2 inches in length, about the length of a pen or marker.

It’s Shark Week once again, the Discovery Channel’s weeklong marathon of shark documentaries that has been 34 years running. So popular is Shark Week that it’s practically a national holiday here in the United States. National Geographic has gotten in on the action too with their own Shark Fest which celebrates the cartilaginous fishes with an entire month of shark content this year. So, what better way to join in on the fun here at the Animal Toy Blog than with a week full of shark reviews? To start things off we’ll be looking at the newest shark to grace our shelves and toyboxes, the salmon shark by Safari Ltd.

The addition of a salmon shark ( Lamna ditropis ) to Safari’s roster is especially exciting for me because the salmon shark, and its Atlantic counterpart the porbeagle ( Lamna nasus ), happen to be two of my favorite shark species. Although these sharks are not rare in nature, they are species that most people have probably never heard of, the kind that rarely get a Shark Week popularity boost. As a result, I never thought any toy company would tackle one of them, so this salmon shark was my most anticipated animal figure of the year, and I am so excited to share it with you all.

The salmon shark could be called a great white shark in miniature. They look very much like their close cousins but at a maximum size of 10’ (3.048) only reach about half the size. And if you’re enamored by the idea of a pint size great white then you can understand why I adore these sharks so much. Salmon sharks and great whites, along with the porbeagle and two species of mako sharks, belong to the Lamnidae or mackerel shark family.

Salmon sharks live in cool coastal and oceanic seas in the North Pacific where their high body temperature gives them an advantage in their pursuit of salmon, herring, sardines, and other fishes as well as squid. The salmon shark is one of only three shark species found in Alaskan waters. Although salmon sharks are considered potentially dangerous there are no confirmed attacks on humans from a salmon shark.

The Safari salmon shark measures 5.25” (13 cm) which puts it at 1/22 in scale for a maximum sized 10’ specimen. It is presented with its mouth open and thrusting forward at some unseen prey. The tail has a gentle rightward curve. The salmon shark is sculpted by Safari’s premier sculptor, Doug Watson.

This salmon shark is beautifully executed with its heavy spindle-shaped body, short conical snout, and long gill slits. The caudal fin (tail) is crescent shaped and strongly keeled with a unique smaller, secondary keel that is useful in identifying this species in life and distinguishing it from the great white shark. The second dorsal and anal fins are appropriately small, and the lack of claspers attached to the pelvic fins indicate that this shark is a female. Individually sculpted, triangular teeth can be seen inside the open mouth with two layers of teeth sculpted on the bottom jaw.

The Safari salmon shark is dark gray dorsally, and white ventrally with dark blotches. The underside of the snout is also dark gray, a feature of adult salmon sharks. The underside of the pectoral fins are edged in black and accurately have white patches over their bases. The dorsal fin is entirely black which helps distinguish this shark from the similar porbeagle, which has a white patch on the rear of the dorsal fin. The eyes are shiny black, the teeth white, and the inside of the mouth is pink.

To my eye this is a flawless, well researched little salmon shark. Safari has done it again and proven that where toy sharks are concerned, they reign supreme. The Safari salmon shark is the only figure available of this species and essentially to any collection wishing to highlight shark diversity. The Safari salmon shark is new for 2022 and available for a retail price of $6.99.

Wonderful! Of course, as soon as there was a leaked rumor of Safari releasing a salmon shark, I knew I would get it (hey, it’s a Safari shark, need I say more?), but your review really seals the deal!

It was the same for me. Without even seeing the toy I knew it was a must have. Safari sharks are always exciting, especially when they’re a new obscure species.

You are welcome to use this option if you would prefer to collect your order from our warehouse based in Ferndale, Johannesburg. You will receive an email as soon as your order is ready for collection.  Collection times are between 09h00 and 16h00 Monday to Friday.

Shipping Rates: We offer free nationwide delivery on all orders over R750. For orders less than this amount, a nominal flat rate fee of R90 will be charged.

Delivery by courier will take 24 - 72 hours to reach you depending on the area that you live. A guideline as follows:

Johannesburg / Pretoria - next day delivery from dispatch

All other major cities - 2 - 3 days from dispatch

Outlying towns - 3 - 4 days from dispatch

A tracking number and estimated day of delivery will be emailed to you once the goods have been dispatched. Customers are responsible for having someone at the delivery address during the day to sign for and accept delivery. Please note our couriers are unable to deliver to a P O Box number. 

For customers that live in remote areas (farms etc) or do not have someone available to sign for a courier delivery, we can send your order to a Post Box via the South African Post Office. All About Sharks!

A popular poem by the American poet John Ciardi, often taught in English classes, begins like this: “My sweet, let me tell you about the shark”. And that’s exactly what we’re going to do, on this particular appropriate week. Without further ado, let’s talk about sharks!

Sharks first appeared around 450 million years ago, and while they looked quite different from today’s sharks, what we think of today as a “shark” has remained largely unchanged for over 100 million years. Great white sharks first appeared around 16 million years ago, and some (like the Megalodon) grew to immense sizes – up to 50 feet long or more!

What IS a Shark?  

You can probably recognize most sharks as sharks when you see them, but do you really know what qualifies something as a shark? What is it that makes a shark different from other fish?

Sharks belong to a group known as cartilaginous fishes, which are unique in that their skeletons are made of cartilage rather than calcified bone like most vertebrates. This group also includes stingrays , sawfish , skates, manta rays , guitarfishes and strange-looking fish known as chimaeras.

What separates sharks from these other cartilaginous fishes? A few things. Firstly, most (but not all) sharks have a cylindrical body shape. They also have long tail (or caudal) fins and one or two back (or dorsal) fins. There are some sharks, like the angel shark, that are flattened like rays…so how can you tell if it’s a shark or a ray? The key is the gills. Rays have their gills on the underside of their bodies, while sharks have gills on the sides of their heads.

Sharks of All Shapes and Sizes

Beyond those basic criteria, there’s quite a bit of diversity and variation in the shark world. Sharks range in size from just a few inches long to nearly 40 feet in length! The basking shark and the whale shark , for example, are both among the largest fish in the world.

Despite their size, these sharks are not dangerous and actually eat some of the tiniest animals in the sea. These two sharks  are “filter feeders”. They swim slowly through the seas with their giant mouths open, straining the water for tiny organisms to eat.

Some sharks are built purely for speed, like the mako shark . It can reach speeds of up to 45 miles per hour in short bursts due to its torpedo shaped, streamlined body. While most sharks like the mako must constantly swim to pass water through their gills, some can sit motionless on the sea floor, like the zebra shark and nurse shark

Caution: Great Whites Might Bite!

Of course, no discussion of sharks would be complete without mentioning the biggest and baddest of them all: the great white shark . These huge fish can reach up to 20 feet long and weigh over 4000 pounds. They have a fearsome reputation, and these sharks have indeed been involved in attacks on humans. However, they do not intentionally hunt humans, as we lack the fat content of the sea lions and other marine mammals they typically eat.

While shark attacks do occur, they are quite rare. Other than the great white, tiger and bull sharks are the most likely to be involved in attacks on humans. Despite their reputation, most shark species are quite shy and will not attack a human unless it is provoked or bothered. The reality is that humans pose a much greater threat to sharks than the other way around.

Save the Sharks!

About 70 shark attacks on humans are reported per year. Conversely, tens of millions of sharks are harvested every year for their fins, which are used in a food dish called shark fin soup. This soup is falsely believed to have medicinal uses, leading to a sharp increase in demand in countries like China. Some shark species have declined as much as 80% in the last 50 years due to overfishing. The process of “finning” is a cruel and inhumane practice that leads to a slow and painful death for the shark involved.

While many people fear sharks, these apex predators have much more reason to fear us. They serve an important role in the marine ecosystem, and if they are not protected, the world’s oceans will suffer. These amazing creatures should not be feared, but they do deserve our respect, and our assistance in ensuring that they have a future on our planet.
