SAMAL ISLAND TRAVEL GUIDE

How to get to samal island davao, getting to samal island from davao city.

If you are getting to Samal Island from Davao City. There are two options:

Option 1:  Take 2 jeepneys from the city to Sta. Ana Wharf and from there, ride the Palboros boat to go to Kaputian, Samal. This is  the cheapest option  and it will cost around 20 PHP for the jeepneys and 60 PHP for a one-way boat.

Option 2:  Take 2 jeepneys to Sasa Wharf and from there, ride the bus. The bus will go on board a vessel ship to Samal. We really love these local experiences in our travels. From Penaplata, you can ride the shared tricycle to Kaputian for 75 PHP each for around 20 kilometers. This can be an option if the weather is bad since the ferry takes only 5 minutes to get to Samal Island.

We had to choose the second option to get to Samal Island from Davao City (we definitely wanted the first). As there were some locals who informed us that the boats from Sta. Ana Wharf were not sailing the day we were traveling due to some weather complications.

From Kaputian, we walked a few minutes to Purok Cacao, where we stayed with Russian friends while  doing Couchsurfing . Turns out, there was a small Russian community in this area, which made our trip visiting Samal Island much more interesting

SAMAL ISLAND TOURIST SPOTS AND THINGS TO DO IN SAMAL ISLAND DAVAO

1. snorkeling in samal island davao.

The waters in Samal is definitely super clear, even in the port area! We stayed in Kaputian, and instead of swimming directly in the resort (where there is an entrance fee), we walked more towards where the local boats were parked and started to swim there.

In the Philippines, you need to pay for every local beach that you visit. So we swam and snorkeled as much as we could. You can easily see fishes, corals and even starfishes in the crystal clear waters.

2. SWIMMING IN KAPUTIAN BEACH

Of course, if you are near the beach, it will be a crime not to swim. Kaputian Beach is perfect for swimming. Mind you, there were a couple of beaches in Asia we didn’t get to swim. Such shame, we know. Kaputian Beach is accessible, very beautiful waters like the one in Samal Island, we made sure we swim all the time.

3. ISLAND HOPPING IN SAMAL ISLAND DAVAO

If you want more of those good island vibes, you can visit Talikud Island. It´just a few minutes away from Samal Island and almost an hour away from Davao. Talikud is the perfect place to watch the sunset, relax in the beach and do some snorkeling.

5. MEETING NEW PEOPLE

Can you believe that the locals we met in Samal were actually Russians? We stayed in a small Russian community of 6 adults and 3 children, and they were all raw vegans. It’s actually a challenge to do that in the Philippines, but since they are in the islands, they have easy access to fresh fruits and vegetables.

Also they home-grow a lot and helps them keep their food fresh and delicious. Pretty amazing, right? There are so many interesting people you can meet and cool stories to hear when you travel!

Located in Talicud Island is a huge cave that visitors explore not just for its beauty but for the legend that surrounds it. Baga Cave is involved in many stories of local folkore because of its huge chambers and seemingly endless depths.

WHAT TO EAT IN SAMAL ISLAND DAVAO

If you are very new to the Philippines, you will know that the locals have a very different diet. It consists mostly of meat, especially in the cities. We live in Northern Philippines (the country has 3 main divisions). And in our own city, people really like to focus on meat as a main ingredient for their dishes. It’s definitely different in the South.

Just looking at their regular local  carinderias  (Filipino term for canteens or eateries), you will see various vegetable options. We definitely needed a much more balanced diet and this was very refreshing. Seafood, fruits, and vegetables – there are so many healthier options! Vegetables are definitely more affordable compared to the city.

ABOUT SEE & DO EAT & DRINK STAY BUDGET ADVICE

Travel Insurance

Due to its close proximity to Davao City , Samal Island is oftentimes associated with the city that is the center of Metro Davao.  Officially called the Island Garden City of Samal, Samal is an entirely different city from Davao City.  It is a coastal component city in the province of Davao del Norte and is located in the Davao Gulf.  It comprises two islands, the main island and Talikud Island.

It is a favorite island getaway by locals and tourists not only because of its easy access from Davao City but mostly because the island is blessed with pristine beaches and rich marine life.  The island’s shores are lined with beaches and resorts while the middle portion has hills used for agricultural production which the city’s economy is greatly depending on.

This brief guide to Samal Island will let you know how to get there, what to do, eat, and drink, where to stay, and must-see spots.

Samal Island Location Map

Best Time to Visit

It’s best to visit the Philippines during the dry season .  Dry season in the Philippines spans from November through April .  These are the summer months in this country.

Be aware that temperatures and humidity levels are particularly high in April and May .

The best time to be a beach bum and explore the islands is from March to May.

TIP:  This guide recommends that booking for Samal Island summer trips should be done as early as possible, at least a month before your travel dates, since resorts get fully booked early.

The period from June to October is the rainy (wet) season and is best avoided due to the high possibility of typhoons. The typhoons can not only be destructive, but most tours and activities are cancelled under such circumstances.  Transportation via plane and boat is also seriously impacted as well.  This happens frequently so beware!

This guide recommends traveling to Samal Island in April-May or in November-December , just before and just after the rainy season. This will likely bring fewer crowds, yet pleasant weather, and is also a great time to score a travel deal.

Mt. Apo is not the only mountain on this side of Mindanao.  While it’s not as grand as Mt. Apo which is the highest mountain in the Philippines, Mt. Puting Bato is perfect for beginners or anyone looking for an easy hike.

7 | Talikud Island

8 | Vanishing Island

This isn’t actually an island but a shoal that appears as a sand bar during low tide and vanishes during high tide therefore giving the impression that the few cottages in the area are standing amidst the open seas.  Apart from its fine white sand and clear waters, Vanishing Island is also a good option for snorkeling as the sea is teeming with coral reefs and other marine life.

Suggested Budget

This chart is your guide to get an idea of how much to budget daily in Samal Island.  The actual amounts will depend on YOUR travel style. Keep in mind that these are daily averages … some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less. Prices are in USD.

Travel Costs

Accommodation.

A bed in a  hostel  dorm costs from 450-950 PHP ($8–17 USD), but smaller dorms can cost from 800 PHP ($15 USD).  For a private double, prices start around 850 PHP ($15 USD).

Most  budget hotels  begin at 900-1400 PHP ($16-25 USD) per night for a double room and usually include free wifi and breakfast. For  a three-star hotel , prices begin around 1,500 PHP ($26 USD) per night.  AirBnB  is also widespread throughout the country, with private rooms starting from as little as 900 PHP ($16 USD) per night.  For entire apartments, expect to pay at least 1,400 PHP ($25 USD) per night.

Resorts and luxury accommodations  vary greatly from 2,000 PHP ($35 USD) to 5,000+ PHP ($90+ USD).  However, there are some really nice resorts and luxury accommodations which are surprisingly affordable.

We use and recommend booking online to save money using  HostelWorld ,  Agoda ,  Booking.com , and  Expedia .

Local food is extremely cheap, with street food costing under 50 PHP ($1USD).  For an inexpensive meal at a local restaurant, prices start around 100 PHP ($2 USD).  For a meal at a mid-range restaurant with drinks and table service, expect to pay from 400 PHP ($7 USD).  Knowing that their target customers are primarily tourists, Western food venues can be pricey compared to Filipino food.  Also, some of the ingredients need to be imported, which contributes to the higher cost. Western food (burgers, pizza, pasta, etc.) is much more expensive but is still relatively affordable at around 200 PHP ($4 USD) for a meal and drink.

Fast food like McDonalds will cost around 200 PHP ($4 USD).  A beer at the bar will cost around 50-100 PHP ($1–2 USD).

A week’s worth of groceries will cost between 300-600 PHP ($6-12 USD) per person.  However, food in this country is so inexpensive, and kitchens & refrigerators are hard to come by, I don’t recommend cooking your meals here since there is plenty of delicious street food to eat at very cheap prices. You won’t make it as good as they do and the food is too delicious to miss!

Transportation

There are many modes of transportation available in the Philippines and each varies greatly.

Public Transportation is cheap.  Bus services on the islands are inexpensive.  Local buses (called jeepneys) are the most common type of transportation in towns and cities. The fare is usually between 13-25 PHP ($.26–.50 USD).

On islands without a bus system, a taxi or tricycle is the only form of transport with fares starting at 50-500 PHP ($1-$10) USD for short trips.

Taxis are everywhere, and they’re very cheap.  Most fares shouldn’t cost you more than 500 PHP ($10 USD) around town.

To get between islands, you’ll need to take a boat or to fly.  There are ferries that connect the island together since they aren’t too far apart but, generally speaking, flights are the most realistic option.

Flights between islands usually cost about 2,000-3500 PHP ($40-70 USD).  However, this isn’t the cheapest way to travel.  It’s only recommended if you have limited time.

We recommend booking online to save money using:  WayAway , Kiwi or Expedia .

Attractions & Activities

Most attractions and activities in the Philippines are pretty cheap. Most attractions throughout the area are FREE to enter, though some of the more well known and popular ones cost 5-100 PHP ($.10-$2 USD) to enter.

Depending on the activity, most day tours only cost around 1,000-1,500 PHP ($20-30 USD), oftentimes less.  You have more bargaining power if you go with a group. If you are expecting to do some climbing, remember to pack some warm layers. It gets cold at the top!

Other activities such as Island Hopping, scuba diving, helmet diving, swimming with whale sharks, jungle trekking, canyoning, ATVs, jet skis, wakeboarding, cruises, parasailing, horseback riding, cultural experiences, and tours can cost as much as 1,250-5,000+ PHP ($25-100+ USD).

The Philippines is one of the least expensive places to learn how to scuba dive. Learning to scuba dive usually costs about 15,000-20,000 PHP ($300-400 USD), but often includes FREE accommodation for the duration of the course, which lasts three or four days.

Always book your tours and activities when you arrive.  Stick to travel agents who are selling on the ground. If a travel agent won’t negotiate with you, move on to the next until you find one that will.  Booking tours online is almost always more expensive.

The following is some of our best advice on traveling to this destination.  This is your guide on what you need to know BEFORE you go to Samal Island!

Tips & Hacks

The following are this guide’s Top 10 Tips when visiting Samal Island:

  • Be aware that a tourist VISA is only 30 days. You can extend it upon arrival, or within the first 30 days, for an additional 30 days for a fee of approximately 3,000 pesos.
  • Don’t buy into the fear factor. The Philippines has an unjustified reputation of being a dangerous place. It’s true there are security guards everywhere, but that is to deter theft.
  • Manila is NOT the Philippines. Get outside of the cities to see the real Philippines.
  • Don’t over plan. Boats, buses, and even airplane schedules are notoriously unreliable. Be flexible.
  • Check the weather. The weather varies greatly throughout the Philippines daily.
  • Typhoons can have a huge impact on your plans. Account for this when planning your trip.
  • It’s not cool to raise your voice or show outward frustration in public.
  • Be polite at all times. Realize that your country’s sense of humor may be different from Filipino humor and take this into account when interacting with Filipinos and while in public places.
  • Things move at a slower pace. Accept it … don’t get frustrated … but do account for it.
  • Don’t drink the tap water… but stay hydrated! Save money by buying large bottles (6-10 liters) of water and using it to fill your water bottle or hydration bladder in your backpack.

Money Matters

The Philippines has its own currency called the Philippine Peso. Banks, ATMs, and money-changers can be found on the island. If you are exploring the neighboring islands or provinces, make sure to bring enough cash that will last until the next time you get to an ATM or bank since most tours, transportation, and budget accommodations only accept cash.

Health & Safety

While overall the Philippines is a safe country to visit, as is Samal Island, you need to use common sense just as you would in any country, especially when traveling, and in a city, town, or area you are unfamiliar with.

Staying Connected

You need to have a local-based SIM card in order to stay connected when in the Philippines. Network giants such as Globe and Smart have SIM cards you can use to make calls, send text messages, and also to connect to the Internet. A SIM card costs around 50 PHP ($1 USD) and usually comes with a FREE load worth 50 PHP ($1 USD). You can buy a card containing a code you can enter on your phone to replenish your load or buy an electronic load that is available almost anywhere in the city.

While you may not have problems with signal strength when in the city, it is not always the case when on islands or in remote areas of a province.  So when arranging for transportation pick up, say when renting a boat to take you to and pick you up from the island, it would be best that you make it clear what time you need to be picked up before the boatman leaves.

Things to Remember

This guide recommends to take note of the following while traveling in Samal Island or in the Philippines in general.

There is a nationwide ban which prohibits smoking in public places including indoors, the streets, on sidewalks, in restaurants , and on public transportation, requiring smokers to use designated smoking areas.  Selling tobacco to and purchasing from or for minors is also prohibited. Violators are subject to fines (up to 5,000 PHP | $100 USD) and even 4 months in prison.

The minimum legal drinking age is 18.  Alcohol such as beer and hard drinks can easily be bought in grocery and convenience stores.  The most common alcoholic beverage is beer, generally served cold.  Local alcoholic drinks include tuba (coconut wine which is usually very strong) and potent moonshine-like clear liquors made from sugar or fruit.  Imported beer, wine, and name brand hard alcohol are available but expensive.

Drugs are illegal in the Philippines.  Don’t use, buy, or sell any non-prescription drugs while in the Philippines … not even marijuana.  It is considered an especially heinous crime to buy from, for, or sell drugs to children.  The penalties are severe … up to and including death.

Public nudity is illegal in the Philippines and is not tolerated.  Most locals consider it offensive.  There are laws which prohibit provocative and erotic clothing and swimwear, therefore carefully consider your clothings and swimwear choices to make certain they are not too revealing.

Foreigners & Expats

If you are not a Filipino citizen, remember that you are a guest when visiting this country … be certain to act accordingly.  Respect the people, their customs, and the environment and wlidlife. You can be deported and banned … so behave … but have fun and enjoy all that this wonderful destination has to offer.

It only takes a few seconds before you hit the deep sea. The first attempt will leave you thinking and hesitating, but after, you’ll want to go a couple of rounds more. The resort offers other activities such as banana boat rides, jet ski rental, scuba-diving, and kayaking. There is an entrance fee of P300.

UPDATE: As of September 2023, we’ve confirmed that Maxima Aquafun is no longer operational.

Where to Stay on Samal Island

The island has some affordable and luxurious accommodations for all budgets. Babak District has some affordable resorts as well. You have the option to camp in Kaputian Beach if you want to rough it out and save money. Since Samal is near and easily accessible, you can head back to Davao City and book a place there. The beautiful Island Garden City of Samal: 16 things to do

The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands. Most of these are attractive islands but there a few which seem to stand above the rest. The Island Garden City of Samal – composed of 7 islets – is one of these because of its unspoiled beauty. “A little paradise on earth” is how people described the place.  (READ:  From Davao City, make the trip to these 8 beautiful beaches )

Located in the heart of the Davao Gulf, Samal City is physically unattached to the mainland of Mindanao although it only 900 meters east of Davao City. It has a stretch of over 118 kilometers of continuous coastline and with an extensive mountain range at the eastern coast, a number of isolated hills and uneven distribution of lowlands.

“The water is crystal clear throughout the coastline, which varies in terrain from gently sloping sand beaches to steep cliffs and rock formations,” the Davao regional office of the Department of Tourism informs. “The colors of the coastline at the beach areas transform itself from the green lush vegetation of coconut trees, to the white sandy beaches, to the dark blue color of the sea, with its deep waters and coral reefs.” (READ: Davao City: Your complete weekend itinerary )

Samal has so many things to offer to its guests and visitors. Three days are not enough to explore its serene surroundings and wildlife treasures. Here’s a rundown of what you can do:

1. Laze around all day at the Pearl Farm Beach Resort . Frolic along the white sand, walk under the trees, or simply have a good time while singing karaoke at the Parola bar at night.  A bonus: The food served in Maranao Restaurant is amazing so you do not have to worry if you will like them or not.

PEARL FARM BEACH RESORT. All photos by Henrylito Tacio

2. Conquer your fear by riding the giant slides of Bluejaz Beach Resort and Water Park ( www.bluejaz.net ). The slides are 130 meters long and consist of two serpentine flume rides that drop 30 meters from top to bottom.

BLUEJAZ. Take the plunge

3. Have your picture taken with the fire dancers while they are doing their thing.  Do this only after they have already performed. Fire dancing is featured in some special events of Pearl Farm and Bluejaz resorts.

4. Take a dip in the natural swimming pools of Hagimit Falls, a low-dropping cascade with huge rock formations gushing forth water and mammoth boulders that seemed to have existed for eons. The place is well-covered by the canopy of full-grown trees, from the searing heat of the sun.

5. Visit the 224-hectare facility of the Island Garden City of Samal Mariculture Park in  sitio  Leydao, Kaputian District. Touted as an “industrial park on sea,” it is the first of its kind in the Philippines.

6. Go spelunking. There are more than seventy identified natural covers in Samal. Balete and Mangongawong caves offer trails of excitement while Baga cave looks like an undersea tunnel.

CANOPY WALK. Watch your step!

7. Scale Mount Puting Bato (so named because of the sheer limestone wall with a towering height of about 1,362 feet above sea level) and get to experience the thrills of climbing and be rewarded with a picturesque view of the land, sea and sky once you reach the top.

8. Go biking. The Cycling Advocates and Adventures listed the city as one of the top sites for biker.  “A must-ride for bikers not only from the South,” it said. “The relative peace and order here is a great way for cyclists to get introduced to Mindanao.”

9. Walk. You can go almost everywhere around the island to discover the unbeaten paths. Samal has a total land area of 30,130 hectares. (The modes of transportation in the city are motorcycles and buses.)

10. Feel like a bird when walking on top of the canopies of trees at the Maxima Resort Aqua Fun  in  barangay  Cawag.  If you fear heights, don’t look down!  Another thing you can do: take the tarpaulin slide and plunge into the open sea.

11. Take a cruise around Samal Island and get to see almost 50 beach resorts scattered all over the island. Islands Banca Cruises Davao has specially designed tours ranging from a half day island hopping tour to an entire day of cruising through the Davao channel.

MALIPANO ISLAND. Visit if you're in the area

12. Take a dip at the Vanishing Island in barangay Tambo before it disappears when the tide gets high. It is also an excellent spot for kids to do snorkeling and beach combing.

13. Marvel at the sight of the more than two million bats living inside the Monfort Bats Conservation Park. It has been listed in the Guinness Book of World Records.

14. Go below the waters. The Pearl Farm is a natural haven of scuba diving as its waters had been declared a marine sanctuary. Just 60 meters away from the resort are two sunken Japanese World War II ships that await discovery. You can go to the islets of Talikud and Liguid where you will find beautiful coral reefs and amazing marine life.

15. Capture the beauty of the rice fields in barangay Aumbay, the island’s only rice granary. I had seen the same picturesque rice fields in Ifugao (Mountain Province) and Bali (Indonesia) but I was not expecting to see the same view in the middle of Samal.

SEA OF GREEN. Take it all in

16. Join fishermen while they are looking for fish in some parts of the island. This is usually done in the early morning or late afternoon.

GO BOATING. Accompany the locals. Those views!

Looking for places to stay and food to eat? Don’t worry; the island has plenty.  Among those we recommend, aside from those mentioned earlier, are Hof Gorei Beach Resort, Paradise Island Park and Beach Resort, Punta del Sol Beach Resort,  Fernandez Beach Resort, Mayumi Disney Sea Beach Resort, and Blue Water Village and Resort. All these resorts also offer food to their guests and visitors.

Samal’s launch pad is in Davao city, about 45 minutes away by motorboat. You can go to Sta. Ana Wharf and Km 11 Wharf in Davao where there are small boats and even a ferry (if you are bringing you car). If you are staying in one of the big resorts such as Pearl Farm, they have a separate motorboat for you.

If you are trying to get there from Manila or Cebu, you can take a plane to Davao. It has daily flights to and from the city via Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines. You can also get there by sea via Superferry and Sulpicio Lines from Manila or Cebu. Land trip to Davao from Manila is also available via Bicol, but it is going to be a very long journey. – Rappler.com

Samal Island, also known as the Island Garden City of Samal, is a true gem located in the province of Davao del Norte in the Davao Region of the Philippines. It’s comprised of Samal Island itself and the smaller Talikud Island, both nestled in the pristine waters of the Davao Gulf. Being part of the Mindanao Island group, it’s no wonder this place offers a captivating blend of natural beauty and thrilling adventures.

One of the best things about Samal Island is its proximity to Davao City. As the largest resort city in the Philippines, Samal Island boasts a plethora of breathtaking beaches along its shores and picturesque hills dominating its landscape. Immerse yourself in the beauty of marine life and discover the colorful coral gardens that adorn the island’s coastline. It’s a true paradise for water enthusiasts.

If you’re seeking a thrilling adventure, why not try your hand at some exciting water sports? Get your adrenaline pumping with activities like windsurfing, kayaking, jet-skiing, and even banana boat rides. The options are endless, and the experiences will leave you craving for more.

But Samal Island isn’t just about the beaches and water activities. Venture into the heart of the island, and you’ll be rewarded with lush greenery and majestic hills. Trek through the scenic trails and embrace the serenity of nature. Don’t forget to visit Talikud Island, located southwest of the main island, for even more breathtaking landscapes and hidden treasures.

As the sun sets, make sure to catch the awe-inspiring view of the island bathed in golden hues. Find a cozy spot on the beach, sip on a refreshing cocktail, and witness nature’s painting in the sky. It’s a moment that will etch itself into your memory forever.

So, my dear Happy Trippers, get ready to embark on an unforgettable journey to Samal Island.
