school history visits

Including larger than life, interactive performances, open-ended workshops and more intimate classroom-based sessions, our unique range of History Workshops and Shows for Primary Schools offers pupils privileged perspectives on the lives of people in the past – and asks important questions about ways that the past has affected the present. And there are four exciting options awaiting you: The Brilliant Britons, Time Travel Theatre, Time Travel Tourists and Historical Maths.

Our workshops are available as in-person sessions and live streamed workshops - all of which are listed below.

“Ten out of ten! I was taken aback by just how good the Time Travel Theatre actors were – and by the impacts the workshops had on the pupils!” History Co-ordinator, Christ Church Primary, Leigh
"Thank you from us all for the fantastic workshops -  I have had so much positive feedback  from the different classes and the content you delivered was spot on for each of the groups.  I was in awe of how easy you made it look, which as a teacher with 20 years experience I don't say very often! -  we will certainly have no hesitation in booking you again in the future." History Through Drama day,  Kirkland and Caterall St Helen's Primary
“The children absolutely loved it and Chris expertly managed to keep them all engaged for over an hour which is a challenge in itself! Chris was so enthusiastic and full of information about Neil Armstrong and really brought History to life for all children. The resources were brilliant and pitched just right -  challenging the more able children whilst allowing our SEN children to be involved too. We will look forward to booking more workshops with you in the future and will highly recommend your workshop to colleagues. Thankyou for making it such an easy process to enquire and book a workshop - we really appreciate this!" A Visit from Neil Armstrong, Bridgewater Primary
"We enjoyed the workshops tremendously. The children learnt a great deal, in an interactive and engaging manner. They gained the intended knowledge from the year specific workshops. They gained a sense of enjoyment through the drama activities and were able to talk, at length, about their activities afterwards. Jo was fabulous and made the day very special for all the children." Cloverlea Primary School

The Brilliant Britons

Ten thousand years of British history in just an hour and a half!

Join our quarreling historians, Professor Past and Dr Dunne, as they trace their families’ roots from the dawn of the Stone Age to the end of the Second World War – taking in over ten thousand years of British history in a fast-paced and action-packed hour and a half. This hilarious and highly interactive presentation has the unique feature of covering key features of every age demanded by the National Curriculum / Curriculum for Excellence, from the birth of civilization to the Roman invasion and from the Viking incursions to the rise of the Saxons – as well as paying brief visits to the bakery at the heart of the Great Fire of London, St Paul's Cathedral in Victorian times and the Home Front in World War II. Not only that, of course, but the experience can be enjoyed by up to 420 pupils in a single day - as well as supporting schools approaches to teaching British values.

"The students gained knowledge about WW1- how it began and life as a soldier, they developed their role play skills in the scenario workshop and learnt about how valuable team work is. We would definitely recommend you to other schools around the area, as well as other teachers who we are friends with. It was a really successful day and the children haven't stopped talking about it." Ditton Primary School

London History – Through Drama (London History Day 31st May)

The ideal way to celebrate London History Day, London History – Through Drama can accommodate the whole of up to a two-form entry school in a single day in an exploration of more than 2,500 years of London history. Specially developed to support children’s understanding of the important part London has played, continues to play and will always play in history, a day comprises …

An interactive assembly, bringing to life what London ‘is” – and why the city is so important, both nationally and internationally.

Workshops (one per year group), using age-appropriate, drama-based activities to explore different aspects of London’s history:

  • EYFS: Transport for Londoners … how have the ways Londoners get about their city changed over the centuries?
  • Year 1: The Great Fire of London … who or what caused it, how did it spread – and how did it shape London’s future?
  • Year 2: Victorian London … how did the Victorians change the way London looked – and the ways Londoners spend their free time?
  • Year 3: Iron Age London … what can the Iron Age Hill Camps of Epping Forest tell us about London in the days before the city even got its name?
  • Year 4: Rebellion against the Romans … why did the Battle of Londinium give such hope to Boudica’s band of rebellious Britons – and how did it all turn out?
  • Year 5: Shakespeare’s London … how did Shakespeare change life in London – and what was his relationship with the Tudor court?
  • Year 6: London Strikes Back – the Battle of Cable Street … how did London’s diverse population rise to the challenge of the pre-war fascists – and what were the lasting impacts?
“Our students were thoroughly engaged during Jackon's sessions (and so were the teachers!). Our pupils were so enthused and excited about history after the sessions. They loved all of the drama and being active! History Through Drama day, Castlehill Primary School

Ruby Slippers’ Tour of British History! - Whole School History Day

A unique way to explore both history and British Values - in just one day! There are two things you should know about Ruby Slippers. First, she has a passion for learning as much as she can about and from history. And second, with just a click of her own slippers (and a little bit of imagination), Ruby can visit any time from the past that she wants! And she can help both one, two and three-form entry schools explore both British history and British Values in the course of a single day!

One-Form Entry

Your day will start with a whole-school interactive presentation in which Ruby introduces herself and her powers - then allows the pupils to select which periods of British history she visits. As each epoch is unveiled, she’ll invite some of the pupils to join her in playing characters from the Stone Age to the Roman occupation of Britain, from the tussles between the Anglo-Saxons and the Vikings (and, eventually, the Normans, too!) to Tudor Times - and from the Great Fire of London to the Victorians and the two World Wars. She will then work with each class in turn to bring aspects of history alive though drama-based activities - with teachers choosing from the Stone/Bronze/Iron Ages, the Egyptians, the Ancient Greeks, the Romans in Britain, the Anglo-Saxons, the Vikings, the Normans, the Mayans, the Tudors, Mr William Shakespeare, the Great Fire of London, the Gunpowder Plot, the Victorians, World War I and World War II.

Two-Form Entry

Don’t feel left out - because you get choices, too! You can elect to have three of the interactive presentations, each for a third of the school community - or two (each for half of the community), plus two Question and Answer sessions (each for one class). And you can also, of course, choose to book two days of Ruby’s time - offering the whole school the whole experience!

Three-Form Entry

Ruby doesn’t want to leave larger schools feeling overlooked - so you have the option of going for three of her presentations, each for a third of the school community.

“Thank you so much to Helen and the team the pupils had a brilliant day yesterday. The performance and workshops were engaging getting the pupils to think about what they had seen and learnt.” Fairmead Special School

Time Travel Tourist - the Apollo Adventurers

Celebrating 50 years since the first humans walked on the moon

It was in July 1969 that Neil Armstrong stepped onto the lunar landscape and uttered the famous words, "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." Since then, only another eleven astronauts have walked on the moon - and none since 1972. This unique programme, though, gives your pupils an opportunity to meet and work with one of the people behind Apollo 11 - Margaret Hamilton (who led the team designing the mission's software) or Astronaut Armstrong himself. Your Tourist will be more than happy to meet the school at an assembly - then visit a number of classes during the day in workshops using drama techniques to bring to life the Apollo 11 adventure, and her/his role in its success.

We have lots of other Time Travel Tourists available, too, including; Mrs Pankhurst , General Haig , Siegfried Sassoon and Kitty Wilkinson. So if there's someone that your pupils would like to meet - just ask!

Suitable For: up to 30 pupils at a time, EYFS - KS2 / P1 - P7

Exploring (according to age): preparations for the mission; history, characteristics and composition of the moon; the Apollo 11 astronauts; the role of the moon in future space exploration.

Duration: 1 hour + (depending on how many classes)

“Our pupils absolutely loved having “Neil Armstrong” in school for the day, the workshops were really engaging and further embedded the pupils’ knowledge about the moon and the moon landing. It was a brilliant day that the children thoroughly enjoyed." Canons Primary Schooll
"The children had an absolutely amazing time and learnt so much. The children were so convinced that Neil Armstrong had travelled through our time machine that one of children had made!  They were so engaged throughout the workshop, asked so many questions and recalled lots of information that was shared with them.  I look forward to applying our learning over the next few weeks!" Holy Spirit Catholic Primary School

Florence Nightingale - Legacies of the Lady with the Lamp

Florence Nightingale gained the nickname “The Lady with the Lamp” whilst caring for soldiers injured in the Crimean War. And our Time Travel Tourist programmes give you the opportunity to mark the occasion by inviting her into your school, running workshops allowing children to explore her life, her work - and how the different approaches to nursing developed by both her and the Jamaican-born Mary Seacole changed the medical world forever. And as Florence is just one of the Tourists we can provide, you might also be interested in hosting the military strategist General Haig, the suffragette Emeline Pankhurst or the astronaut Neil Armstrong!

“The interactive performance was brilliant and the children thoroughly enjoyed it. The actors were lovely and worked really hard during the day - Thank you!” Headteacher, Weston Primary School, Runcorn
“The children have learnt more from than this than from a thousand worksheets!" Assistant Headteacher, Holy Family Primary School

Homing in on the Home Front - WWI

Our uniquely interactive 75  minute Time Travel Theatre performance, Homing in on the Home Front, offers pupils opportunities to explore ways that the War touched on every aspect of life – from the food people ate to the clothes that they wore to the precautions they took against invasion.

The programme exists in a range of flexible formats, allowing up to 420 pupils to experience it in a single day! Classes in one-form entry schools will have opportunities to take part in follow-up workshops – while selected pupils in larger schools will have chances to engage in Question and Answer sessions with the actors.

Although they live in the countryside, Ed and Flo Duckworth are still in danger from the enemy planes that fly overhead. So they combine running their farm with “doing their bit” – Flo as an Air Raid Warden and Ed as a private in the local Home Guard. Join them and their friends Vera the Land Girl and Cyril the Spiv as they begin to get used to the huge changes in their lives – including the impending arrival of a couple of evacuees!

There’ll be laughs and tears, singing and dancing as your pupils join these larger than life characters to Make Do and Mend, Save Kitchen Scraps – and Dig for Victory. Not forgetting that Walls Have Ears, of course!

The programme is particularly suited to Keys Stages 2 and 3 / P4 - P7 – but Years 1 and 2 / P2-P3 will get a lot out of it, too. And we always welcome Reception classes / P1 for the first half hour or so!

Outcomes: greater knowledge of the causes and course of World War II; increased understanding of the concept of “total war”; heightened awareness of the roles played by class and gender during the period.

“All of the children thoroughly enjoyed the workshop and have been able to use this as a hook for their ‘Local Heroes’ History topic. We have been able to generate lots of discussion and high quality written work from the visit. They particularly enjoyed how engaging and practical the session was. It was a very enjoyable experience for not only the children, but the staff have found it very useful as it has helped with their planning." Banks Road Primary School
"Please can you pass on our thanks to “Neil Armstrong”, he was brilliant. The children got so much out of it and really enjoyed the session. He answered their questions so well and was very, very knowledgeable." Clarendon Infants

Historical Maths

These uniquely cross-curricular programmes see children using a range of age-differentiated mathematical skills to solve problems from the past – whilst at the same time learning a wealth of new historical content. Lasting 90 minutes upwards, they can all accommodate up to 30 pupils at a time. You can choose from …

The Viking’s Quest –a mixture of myth and maths from the North!

CSI: Ancient Greece – who lifted Zeus’s Lightning Bolt?

CSI: Saxons – was it really Alfred the Great who burnt the cakes?

“As part of our Maths week, all KS2 children in the School had the CSI:Maths workshop. The children were buzzing about it all week and realised that Maths can be fun! I would highly recommend it and would not hesitate to use you again in the future." Maths Teacher, St Benedict’s Primary

Exploring the World of Explorers KS1

From Leif Erikson to Neil Armstrong, and led by our modern day explorer, Major Tom, this workshop introduces KS1 /P1 - P3 pupils to some landmark people and moments in the history of global exploration. They’ll consider what it takes to be a great explorer (including remembering the need to respect other cultures), engage in drama activities unveiling some set-piece expeditions and complete beautifully illustrated Timelines to record and celebrate their learning.

“The students loved the workshops. Staff and pupil feedback was very positive. Children particularly loved the explorer statues that they were asked to make. By the time Chris and Zoe came in, the children already had a fairly good grounding in relation to their explorer. What was impressive though is that you had clearly done a lot of research because Chris and Zoe were able to teach them new things or make links to other aspects eg nationality. You've made a very positive impression and I am sure we will be inviting you back to St George's in some guise in the future." St George's Church of England Primary School
"The sessions were really hands-on and interactive and the children were always switched on. I feel they have learned a lot from the sessions and it will show in their upcoming history work. I know from discussions with the staff and pupils that it was an entirely enjoyable experience and you will be our first port of call for any future history topics.  Thank you very much." History Subject Leader, The Berkeley Primary School

1066 and all that: A History of Britain

Extending children’s learning beyond the national curriculum, while also exploring British values, this KS2 / P4 - P7 workshop sees pupils working in teams of Historical Ambassadors to teach each other about some of the important moments, both famous and infamous, of British History since the Battle of Hastings. Armed with enticingly designed Fact files, teams will explore moments from the Black Death to the Second World War, selecting key facts and preparing and presenting short dramas to bring them to life.  During the workshop, pupils will annotate our beautifully illustrated Timelines - which can either be taken home or used for displays.

Duration: Workshops last for 1-hour to half a day and preferably using the hall space.

"It was good to get the children problem solving and doing both mental and written calculations. They also gained lots of knowledge about the Vikings and lots of them have remembered the facts Jackson shared with them. It was great to see the children being creative. They usually associate maths with being boring and sitting down but getting them to make statues was amazing for them!" Holy Trinity Primary School

How it works, how do i make a booking.

All Virtual Visits are free.

Only bookings made directly by UK schools will be accepted. We don't accept bookings from third parties.

Before you book your Virtual Visit online, please ensure you have read the privacy policy and have the following information ready:

  • Your school address
  • Your school email address and phone number
  • Your choice of workshop
  • Your group's access requirements

Booking confirmation should be within two weeks. Book now

How do I book multiple classes?

You can book multiple dates and times for different classes or all your classes can join at the same date and time.

As each Virtual Visit is taught live and is interactive, the fewer the number of classes attending each session, the greater the likelihood of our experts being able to engage directly with more individual students.

If you'd like to make bookings for multiple dates and times, these must be booked separately.

To make it easier for you to manage your bookings, you can assign different teachers to different bookings using their professional contact details when booking.

What happens during your Virtual Visit?

You'll join the meeting on the video conferencing platform Zoom, using the details sent to you by email after your booking confirmation. If your students are joining from multiple locations, you can share these details with them. A British Museum expert will be in the Museum and will lead the live workshop. You and your students will be the only participants during the workshop, it's just for you.

At least one teacher will need to remain present during the workshop, either in your physical classroom or as a participant on the call if students are joining from multiple locations. If at any point our staff believe the teacher is no longer present, they will end the event as we can no longer adhere to the Museum's safeguarding policy.

How do you connect your class to the Museum?

If students are learning in your classroom, you'll need:

  • A computer with the ability to join a meeting on Zoom. This is how we'll connect your classroom to the Museum.
  • A smartboard, large screen or projector connected to the computer running Zoom. This is how your students will see the live video.
  • Speakers, often built into smartboard, screens and projectors connected to the computer running Zoom. This is how your students will hear the live video.
  • A webcam connected or built into the computer running Zoom. This is how your students will be visible to the Museum's expert.
  • A microphone connected or built into the computer running Zoom. This is how your students will be heard by the Museum's expert.

You can test all of the above equipment prior to booking by joining a test Zoom meeting. Instructions are available on Zoom's website .

Students learning remotely will each need a computer with the ability to join a meeting on the video conferencing platform Zoom.

How do I cancel or amend my booking?

If you're not able to attend a session you must inform the Box Office at least 14 days before the session date.

For further information see the  cancelling your booking section of our terms of use .

What safety measures are in place?

In addition to the Privacy policy and the Safeguarding children and vulnerable adults policy , the Museum also has a risk assessment for Virtual Visits.

How can these workshops be tailored for specific access requirements?

We aim to make our workshops as accessible as possible, for example:

  • We ensure our staff speak clearly and slowly
  • We provide session support notes in advance
  • We send all worksheets in advance so they can be printed as required

If you have specific access requirements for your group, you can communicate these when booking, and we we'll endeavour to meet them.

How do your students take part in the online quiz?

You'll need:

  • One or more devices (smartphone, tablet or computer) in addition to the computer running Zoom. This can work with up to one device per student or even only one device for the whole class. We recommend as many as possible.
  • The ability to open Kahoot on devices. This is how students will answer during the interactive quiz. We recommend opening this link on all devices prior to the start of the workshop.

You can test Kahoot with your students by doing this short Pre-Virtual Visit Quiz  with them.

What happens to my data?

  • Personal data which is provided by you as part of your booking will be held in accordance with our privacy policy  and will be securely deleted as soon as the purpose for which it has been collected has been fulfilled.
  • The British Museum will never take screen shots or make audio or visual recordings of any Virtual Visits without consent.
  • The Virtual Visit will be hosted using a video conferencing platform which is used under license by the British Museum. Your unique meeting invitation and passcode will be shared by email only with you. We won't share any of your personal data with the video conferencing platform and you may need to register with the platform in order to use the service. Any personal data which you provide to the platform in order to register will be held according to their terms and conditions and privacy policy. The British Museum will not have access to this information.

What happens after the workshop?

You'll be emailed an evaluation survey to the same address you used to book. Completing the survey is optional. Your feedback in the survey will help to develop and improve the workshops.

Feedback is greatly appreciated.

What can you do if your question is not answered here?

Contact the Box Office. If they can't answer your question directly, they should be able to pass your question onto someone who can.

Guide for teachers: Planning school visits to museums

school history visits

Thinking about planning a trip to a museum for your class? Here are some quick tips on getting started – from plotting it into your curriculum plan, to reaching out to the museum.

Visits to museums are often a highlight of children’s school careers, remembered for years afterwards. Teachers use trips to introduce topics, consolidate learning at the end of schemes of work, or to support better retrieval for pupils by varying the types of learning. Visiting a museum also helps to develop children’s confidence outside the school environment and a range of skills including behaviour and teamwork.

Integrate the visit into your curriculum planning

The first step when planning a visit is to think about how best you can integrate it into your curriculum plan. The best trips are where teachers have been able to link to pre- and post-visit work back at school. Once you know what topics or skills you need a museum visit to cover, find a museum local to you that can offer this. You can use the Art Map to find local museums and find out more about their collections. Then head to the museums’ own websites to find out more about their schools offer.

Self-guided visit or session?

You’ll have the choice of a self-guided visit, where you direct what you want your pupils to look at and the activities they do, or a visit with a session delivered by the museum’s learning team. If you would like a session, find out if the museum already has workshops on the topic you want or if they will work with you to build a tailored session for your school. If the museum has a collection on your topic, but no workshop, the learning team will often work with you to develop a bespoke workshop. If it’s a session you’re interested in, other schools will probably also be interested, so it’s in the museum’s interest to create a new session.

Object-based learning pedagogy

Museums use object-based learning. If you want to learn more about the pedagogy behind this, as well as key things to think about when planning a museum visit, there are online guides and courses available. The University of Glasgow offers a Future Learn course on the museum as a site of learning. The Science Museum has several online films about planning a visit and making the most of museums.

Contacting the museum

Once you’ve found your museum and identified the type of visit you want, now is the time to book. Approaching the museum with several dates can be useful or booking the visit eight to 12 months in advance. Museums that offer school visits will be well versed on your needs and what they can accommodate. For example, can the museum take a whole year group at once? Where will your group eat lunch? If you are arriving by coach, where is the best place to be dropped off? And so on. The museum will have visit requirements relating to the adult-child ratio which are probably similar to your safeguarding policy requirements. Often museums require a ratio of 1 adult to 15 children at Secondary, and 1 adult to 10 children at Primary. They will probably also have a pro-forma risk assessment that you can adapt as part of your visit planning.

Examples of school visits

If you are considering a school visit, do explore what your local museum can offer you. Working with a local museum will often mean a much more bespoke offer.

Below I’ve mentioned just a few of the many museums that offer well thought out and exciting visits for schools. There are many more to discover. Leeds Museums and Galleries Inspiring workshops at nine venues on a broad range of subjects, across all key stages, with strong linked support for teacher CPD and curriculum planning. National Museum Cardiff Workshops covering dinosaurs, natural history, art and early life in Wales in their excellent learning spaces. Tyne and Wear Archives and Museums School visits across nine museums including a Roman fort, a steam railway and galleries. At the Great North Museum: Hancock you can have hands-on workshops with museum staff, planetarium shows for all ages, plus teacher-led time to explore the galleries. Primary schools can have story time alongside the array of animals in Living Planet, or explore a topic like Ancient Egypt in more depth. Secondary schools can book a cross-curricular enrichment day for a whole year group, while sixth form could meet a curator or have a Q&A on careers.

National Galleries Scotland You can explore historic, modern and contemporary art at the National Galleries Scotland sites. Gallery visits align closely with the Scottish Curriculum for Excellence to nurture creativity, develop skills and deepen understanding of culture in Scotland and the world. Design Museum , London Supporting the National Curriculum for Design and Technology and tailored for key stages 2 to 5, the Design Museum offers students and educators design-education facilities and workshops with a programme connected to the wider ecology of design practice, networks and communities. The Fitzwilliam Museum , Cambridge A wide range of school workshops, resources for self-guided visits and support for GCSE Art students to visit the museum and do exam research.

Oral History Offers a Model for How Schools Can Introduce Students to Complex Topics

school history visits

  • Share article

As historian David McCullough said, history is the study of who we are and why we are the way we are.

That’s why teachers in the Memphis-Shelby County public schools, as racially isolated now as they were when the U.S. Supreme Court outlawed school segregation, have launched a curriculum to introduce their students to the 13 children who helped integrate these Tennessee city schools in 1961.

Memphis-Shelby County teachers, researchers from the University of Memphis, and the local Memphis 13 Foundation worked with seven of the 10 surviving members of the Memphis 13—a group of Black 1st graders who peacefully enrolled in four all-white schools at the height of the civil rights era—to develop teacher training, lesson plans, and oral history activities for elementary students.

school history visits

“Just going home and talking to grandparents or talking to the elders in their community was never going to be enough,” said Anna Falkner, an assistant professor at the University of Memphis and a co-developer of the curriculum, “because it wouldn’t provide [students] with the context that they needed in order to understand what happened and understand the ongoing effects of, for example, the way segregation looks today.”

The Memphis 13 project offers a model for how schools can introduce complex subjects to students, even in early grades, while also giving them opportunities to investigate social studies in their communities

“Really consider the context,” Falkner said. “What are the specifics that can help students understand their Southern context or the context wherever they are and what that means in relation to the larger experience. It’s not just focusing on that national narrative, not just sharing Brown v. Board , but really thinking about, what did this look like in my backyard? What did it look like for my family members or my community members?”

For example, teachers met with surviving members of the Memphis 13 to identify projects for students in 2nd and 5th grades, when Tennessee social studies standards cover civil rights issues. Sheila Malone, one of the students who first integrated into the district’s Bruce Elementary as a 1st grader, suggested that 5th graders record the experiences of others who had attended the district schools during desegregation.

“[Malone] wanted the students to go back home and share the story and have intergenerational conversations about the history of our schools,” said Gina Tillis, the director of curriculum and instruction for the Memphis 13 Foundation, who co-developed the Memphis curriculum. “One of the things that I’ve noticed with the members of Memphis 13 is, as they’re sharing their stories, they’re unpacking memories that have been silenced. … This is a really powerful space for students to reflect on their education, their parents’ and their elders’ education, and what we’re doing collectively to create a more inclusive and equitable school system.”

Second graders, for example, watch documentaries and review news accounts about the school desegregation decisions in Memphis and other cities, identifying ways children their age participated. In 5th grade , students review collected oral history interviews and collect their own, as well as analyze modern policies related to school integration. Tillis said the project plans to expand the curriculum to 8th and 11th grades in the future.

Building school integration history projects

Emerging technology has made it easier for educators to engage their students in active historical research, according to the Center for Public History and Digital Humanities at Cleveland State University in Ohio. The center, for example, has developed apps to help students record interviews and archive historical documents.

Efforts like those of the Memphis 13 helped integrate public schools in the decades following the landmark U.S. Supreme Court ruling in Brown v. Board of Education . However, these trends began to reverse in the 1990s and have worsened to this day, even as the overall public school population has grown more diverse. Studies find schools serving high populations of students of color continue to have on average fewer educational opportunities —including challenging courses, experienced teachers, and other resources—compared with schools serving mostly white students.

While the Memphis 13 are well known, Tillis stressed that schools can use community history to engage students regardless of where they are. “Everyone has a school desegregation story. Every district, every person ... and every district story is unique,” she said. “It’s, I think, one of the most powerful stories to share because it offers you this platform to really deconstruct what’s going on in our schools.”

Researchers recommended that schools interested in developing similar projects:

  • Work with local historians and groups to identify social studies topics and events that had strong effects on the local community. This can include school district librarians or archivists, for example.
  • Provide teachers with training in both the historical context and strategies and tools for documenting community history.
  • Focus on topics that encourage students to make connections between history and current issues in their community.

“One of the lessons that we’re hoping to share with other school districts is just the power of listening to your community members who are historians, even if they don’t work for the local archive: the neighbor down the street who kept all the newspapers, the person who knew everybody in the neighborhood,” Falkner said. “Finding those community members and making a meaningful way for them to participate in the curriculum development is the most important piece.”

How the Columbia protests sparked campus demonstrations across the country

Police surround protesters supporting Gaza on the campus of Columbia University on April 18, 2024.

It just added fuel to the fire.

The decision by Columbia University’s president, Nemat “Minouche” Shafik, to call in the New York Police Department to clear pro-Palestinian protesters from the campus last week appears to have sparked the spate of increasingly strident demonstrations that have erupted at universities in New York City and across the country in recent days, students and faculty members said.

Since Thursday, when police arrested 108 Columbia University demonstrators, including Rep. Ilhan Omar’s daughter, Isra Hirsi, similar protests have erupted on campuses across the country, from New York University and Yale University to the University of Illinois and out west to the University of California, Berkeley, and the University of Southern California, which shut its gates late Wednesday because of the growing demonstrations.

The encampment at Columbia sprung up April 17, the day Shafik was grilled about on-campus antisemitism by the Republican-led House Committee on Education and the Workforce. Shafik faced questions about her handling of antisemitism on campus after Hamas' attack on Israel on Oct. 7 alongside two members of Columbia’s Board of Trustees and the head of its antisemitism task force. The next day, Shafik had police clear the encampment; more than 100 protesters were arrested.

That got Rachel, 19, a Columbia student who asked to be identified only by her first name because of fear of retaliation or suspension by the school, off the fence and into one of the tents that pro-Palestinian demonstrators had raised on the campus in upper Manhattan.

“I think that that was sort of the straw that broke the camel’s back, because students had already been feeling incredibly suppressed and censored by President Shafik,” Rachel said.

Noting that the last time a Columbia University president summoned the police to disperse student demonstrators was back in 1968, at the height of the Vietnam War, Rachel said what she called Shafik’s attempt to intimidate them was backfiring.

“Movements inherently boil when they’re facing extra suppression,” she said.

The Columbia students protesting the war have demanded that the school cut financial ties with Israel and divest from Israeli companies. And they have inspired students across the country to do the same.

“This is about solidarity," said Alex, a Jewish student at the University of Michigan who is part of the pro-Palestinian movement and asked to be identified only by his first name out of fear of retaliation. "We have colleges all across the nation performing a synchronized act because we work together. This is a collective movement far beyond the United States."

Organizers say they were also inspired by protests against the apartheid government of South Africa that an earlier generation of Michigan students took part in.

“It’s never been bigger than it is right now,” said a masked male organizer, who asked to remain anonymous out of fear of retaliation. “We’ve seen that this has been effective in achieving concessions from the administration towards divestment from Israel, apartheid and genocide.”

But it has also sparked a backlash, particularly from politicians on the right who have been urging university administrators to crack down hard on the protesters.

"You have to have law and order on campus," House Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., told NBC News' Stephanie Gosk after he met with Jewish students at Columbia. "Listen, taxpayer funding comes to institutions like this. The American people are demanding that we bring order to this chaos. We have this kind of thing mushrooming around the country right now."

Encampments have continued on Columbia's campus into this week, with Shafik calling for classes to be held virtually Monday and initially giving the demonstrators a deadline of midnight Tuesday to fold up their tents and disperse before she announced that conversations would continue over the next 48 hours without forcing the encampment to be removed.

“We are making important progress with representatives of the student encampment on the West Lawn,” a college spokesperson said.

Image: Pro-Palestinian Protests Continue At Columbia University In New York City

Marianne Hirsch, a Columbia University English professor, said Shafik has been "squashing peaceful protest, squashing open debate, not allowing students to express their opinions and debate their opinions."

And the fact that Shafik summoned the police last Thursday, a day after she was questioned at the congressional hearing, is no coincidence, she said.

"I’m extremely concerned about antisemitism my entire life, and I’m extremely distressed right now to see how antisemitism is being weaponized and used, misused ... under the guise of safety and security," Hirsch, whose parents were Holocaust survivors, said Tuesday.

Later, Hirsch said she “cannot but agree this is motivated by trying to pacify congressional members who are trying to interfere in the running of this school.”

Early Monday, Shafik said that classes would be held virtually Monday and that school leaders would come together to discuss a way to bring an end to “this crisis.”

Several Jewish students at Columbia have told NBC News the antisemitism they experienced was very real and that they're steering clear of the campus for their own safety.

“The tension is so high,” said Itai Dreifuss, 25, a junior and an Israeli who says he has been spat on and taunted by campus protesters waving Hamas flags. “It’s definitely frustrating to be a part of this campus right now. You feel so helpless, and you feel so exposed.”

Speaking with reporters, Johnson said he heard that Jewish students had been "running for their lives."

Gosk challenged that assertion, telling Johnson that while some Jewish students she spoke with "are certainly afraid for their safety," they are "not running for their lives."

"I had standing room only with a house full of Jewish students talking about the intimidation and threats that they experienced," Johnson replied.

Sueda, a graduate student who helped organize the pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia and asked to be identified only by her first name to avoid reprisals, said students escalated pressure on the university and started the tent encampments after previous forms of protest did not lead to the intended results.

"Have those protests yielded any material results from the university? Have they yielded an acknowledgment of the pain felt by Palestinians and by the community that is in solidarity with them? Have they yielded any statements of sorrow or regret by the university for their overly punitive treatment of pro-Palestinian students? No," she said.

Oren Root, a longtime New York City lawyer and Columbia University graduate who was at the school when anti-Vietnam War protests rocked it in 1968, said Shafik's summoning of police was "an extraordinary miscalculation."

"President Shafik and her advisers clearly didn't learn from history," said Root, who was a top editor at The Spectator, the Columbia student newspaper, in 1968 and 1969. “Calling in the cops was clearly a mistake. Things have not gotten any calmer.”

The decision in 1968 by university President Grayson Kirk to have the police forcibly remove protesters from the buildings they were occupying only inflamed the situation and tarnished Columbia's reputation for many years, Root said.

Root, who called for Shafik's resignation in an opinion piece in The Spectator on Monday , said Columbia also appears to have chosen a side in the Gaza battle.

In response, a spokesperson for Shafik did not address Root's criticisms or the calls for her resignation.

"President Shafik is focused on deescalating the rancor on Columbia’s campus," the spokesperson said in a statement Tuesday. "She is working across campus with members of the faculty, administration, and Board of Trustees, and with state, city, and community leaders, and appreciates their support."

New York police also arrested more than 100 protesters at NYU's Gould Plaza on Monday night.

Pro-Palestinian students and activists protest on the campus of New York University in New York

Pro-Palestinian encampments have also been established at other schools that have been the sites of anti-Israel demonstrations, like the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Texas and California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt.

New York Mayor Eric Adams said this week he believed "outside agitators" were using the Israel-Hamas war as an excuse to cause violence and mayhem in the city.

“We can’t have outside agitators come in and be destructive to our city," Adams said at a news conference Tuesday. "Someone wanted something to happen at that protest at NYU."

Students from MIT, Harvard University and others rally at a protest encampment on the MIT campus in Cambridge, Mass.

It was not clear how many of those arrested at Columbia were students and how many were outsiders. Police did not respond to two requests for comment on the arrests.

Meanwhile, a group of 25 Senate Republicans sent a letter Tuesday to Attorney General Merrick Garland asking the Biden administration to address the protests across the nation.

“These pro-Hamas rioters have effectively shut down college campuses and have literally chased Jewish students away from our schools," the letter read. "You need to take action to restore order and protect Jewish students on our college campuses."

The letter did not ask Garland to take steps to protect the pro-Palestinian protesters.

A transgender registered sex offender has been snapped in a creepy mugshot after he was busted allegedly trying to snatch a child from a Colorado elementary school.

Solomon Galligan, 33, was arrested after he came onto a field where kids were playing at Black Forest Hills Elementary School in Aurora last Friday afternoon, 9News reported.

Surveillance video captured Galligan approaching the students just moments before they scattered and started screaming, “Stranger danger.”

Solomon Galligan in his mugshot

Galligan allegedly grabbed hold of one of the children but lost his grip when he tripped on a white blanket he had been carrying, according to the police report.

The nearly abducted child later told cops the alleged perp had white powder smeared on his face and smelled of alcohol.

Galligan quickly fled, but cops later tracked him down to a nearby Walgreens, where he was arrested and charged with one count of attempted kidnapping.

The suspect, who is identified as male in the arrest affidavit, shared news of his transition on Facebook back in 2011.

“So im starting my hormone shots and i relly cant wait im on my hormone pills ive been on them for almost 4 months i wake up all depressed and crying but in the end its gonna be totally worth it you know what io mean im really excited my measurements are already changing and im super thrilled,” he wrote.

Galligan was put on the sex offender registry and was convicted that same year of non-consent sexual contact, according to his latest arrest affidavit.

The details regarding that 2011 incident weren’t immediately clear.

In the wake of his most recent arrest, Galligan is being held on $25,000 bail at the Aurora jail.

He is set to face court on Thursday.
