Subscriber only, mizner country club teen wins sfpga junior tour player of the year award.

Author

Gabriella Albert calls her ascent in golf from worst to first life-changing.

Albert, 15, who lives in Delray Beach’s Mizner Country Club where she is also a member, was recently named the South Florida PGA Junior Tour Player of the Year.

“A couple of years ago, I could never have imagined winning or even wanting to be the best,” Albert said. “Last year, being able to win two or three events really showed me that it is possible and that hard work pays off and if you put your mind to it, it could happen.”

In earning her title, Albert competed in 14 Jr. PGA Tour events in which she won three events, and finished in the top five 11 times, including five runner-up finishes.

The SFPGA consists of both league and major tournaments throughout Florida throughout the year.

A total of 54 girls played in the championship tournament tour season, each vying for player of the year. The Championship Tour is the highest skill level of the SFPGA tours.

Albert said a couple of years ago her game was “at the bottom of the leaderboard.”

“To get to the top [of the leaderboard], it took the desire to want to win every time,” she said. “Probably a year ago, I was not very consistent, so a big part of my game the last seven or eight months, I made that my goal. I was able to have so many rounds that were so similar my [Junior Golf scoreboard] ranking dropped 1,000 points from 1,400 to 466, which was a big deal for me.”

An improvement in her mental game, along with practicing and improving her swing, helped her climb the rankings.

“I think making my swing more repeatable was also a big part of it,” Albert said, “but I think that and course management and how I look at courses, the tournaments and preparation really made a difference.”

It also carried over to her play in high school where she has been a member of the varsity team since middle school.

This past fall, Albert, a freshman at St. Andrew’s School in Boca Raton, had an 18-hole scoring average of 72.7 and 34.4 (9 holes). She also carded a low round of 69 at the FHSAA Class 1A state tourney and finished 16th with a 147 to help the Scots to a fourth-place team finish.

“I didn’t play great the first day but played really well the second,” Albert said of her round at state. “That was a big deal for me. I hadn’t played well on that course, and the last day I was able to conquer it.”

Albert also shot a 71 at districts and a 76 at the regional competition. She’s been a significant contributor and standout on the Scots’ varsity girls golf team since the seventh grade.

“Being player of the year and beating girls that I was losing to years ago really opened up my mind that you can do it,” she said. “It is just hard work, dedication and commitment.”

The journey from “the bottom to the top” is relatable to the relationship she has with her 14-year-old sister Morgan, who has activity-dependent neuroprotective protein syndrome. It is a rare condition, which is diagnosed in children exhibiting signs of autism. Less than 500 people in the world have it.

Gabriella Albert, of Delray Beach, was recently named the 2021 South Florida PGA (SFPGA) Junior Tour Player of the Year. She is pictured with her younger sister Morgan, front.

“She and I through golf have really been able to bond,” Albert said. “Our relationship on the golf course is really, really strong now. I have always really been close with her but having her on the golf course with me and watching me at tournaments is a whole other feeling. Getting serious in golf was a really big deal for her and me. It is the one way that I can really feel like she wants to be there and she talks to me. It isn’t verbal, but I can tell she is happy. There is so much love and support. I love seeing her smile.”

Albert’s golfing career began when she was 5 and her father took her to the driving range. She liked it and he enrolled her in the Sunday Junior golf clinics at Mizner Country Club where they live, and she practices or plays daily.

“The feeling of being on a golf course is indescribable,” Albert said. “It is such a rush, the feeling of being so proud when you play well.”

One of those feelings came during the 2021 season when Albert picked up her first career hole-in-one on the Osprey Point Golf Course. She used a 7-iron on the Par-3, 142-yard 7th hole on Nov. 27, 2021.

“I thought, ‘oh, my God, there’s no way,'” Albert said. “I never thought that would happen. There was a sense of shock, relief and happiness. It bounced, hit the pin, and then twirled into the cup.”

She wants to go as far as she can in the sport.

“I want to be the best in the world,” Albert said. “The desire to be No. 1 is what I strive for now. Winning is a feeling that is so different than anything else. To be able to win in golf is so different than in any other sport. It is your hard work and what you have done.”

She is a fan of Mizner’s Director of Golf Dennis Rye, who has watched Albert’s skills grow.

“I have witnessed Gabriella from her early beginnings to where she is today,” Rye said. “She has blossomed into an extremely strong competitor over the last couple of years by dedicating herself to becoming better with each tournament under her belt.

“Over the last two years, she has really turned the corner and gained tremendous strides in her ability to play tournament golf and perform under pressure,” he said. “She has learned what it takes to win. It is nice to see that her consistent tournament play has been rewarded by being named the Girls 2021 South Florida PGA Jr. Tour player of the year. It is a tremendous accomplishment by one of our very own and is so deserving.”

Opportunities

The Players Tour offers nearly 200 opportunities to play competitive golf in a fun atmosphere. The Players Tour offers:

  • Single-Day Events: There are approximately 170 single-day events hosted throughout Southern California.
  • The 2-Day Series : These 14 events are composed of 90 player fields and the results are submitted to Junior Golf Scoreboard (JGS) and AJGA.
  • Series Championship: There is a Series Championship at the end of every season that the top point finishers will earn a special invite to. Results are submitted to JGS and AJGA.
  • TTC Local Qualifiers: 15 one-day qualifiers for players to earn a spot in a specific Toyota Tour Cup Event.
  • Qualifying School: 36-hole event offered twice a year that provides the top 10% of the field an exemption into The Toyota Tour Cup.

Ready for the Next Level?

Once in The Players Tour, members can try and qualify for the prestigious Toyota Tour Cup. Here are the different ways players may do so:

sfpga junior tour 2022

2. Toyota Tour Cup Qualifying School: 36-hole qualifying event for a year-long exemption to the Toyota Tour Cup. Ten percent (10%) of the final field size (boys and girls) will earn an exemption. No age divisions. The first Qualifying School will be held in May and the second will be held in December. * Points WILL NOT BE awarded for Qualifying School.

3. Local Qualifiers:  There are 15 one-day qualifiers throughout the year. From each qualifier, the top five (5) boys and top three (3) girls will earn exemptions to a specific Toyota Tour Cup tournament. The TTC event name will be listed on the qualifier page. Players will not have the option to transfer their exemption for a different TTC event. If they choose to forgo their spot in the TTC event that they qualified for, that spot will go to the next TTC member on the waiting list. Boys will then need to finish in the top 15 and girls in the top 10 at that TTC Event in order to retain their exemption for the remainder of the year.

4. 2024 Series Championships: The overall champion and runner-up for both boys and girls at each Series Championship will earn a Toyota Tour Cup Exemption.

TTC Exemption Conditions

  • If a player earns an exemption from the Series Championship and the Series Points Race within the same season, an exemption will not be extended to the next player on the Series Championship leaderboard nor the Points Race.
  • The Series Championship TTC exemption will be given to the overall champion and overall runner-up only regardless of the players’ Toyota Tour Cup status.
  • If there is more than one fully exempt player at the top of the points standings, the SCPGA Junior Tour will only drop down a maximum of two players.

Why travel to Moscow

Contrasts: 12th century monasteries and some of the tallest skyscrapers in Europe can be found side-by-side in this complex and captivating city. The diversity of this mega-city is astounding. Only a few steps away from the solemn red facade of the Kremlin and the sounds of righteous church bells, a buzzing night scene and alternative-fashion boutiques can be found.

Culture: In Moscow only the best goes. Be it a theatre, restaurant or gallery, the standards are certain to be world-class. The Bolshoi ballet company is reputed to be even better than the Mariinsky’s and “MMOMA” (Moscow’s museum of modern art) exhibits works of art as profound as any that could be found in the famed MOMA.

Convenience: Unlike the rest of Russia, it’s easy enough to get by with just English in Moscow and, driving excepted, it is surprisingly safe: the murder rate is lower than in some of America’s major cities.

Why visit Moscow

It would take more than two days to walk around the perimeter of the biggest city in Europe, Moscow. Many of its inhabitants barely know what’s beyond the few blocks around their flat and there are so many attractions that it’s almost impossible to know where to start. If there is such a thing as an antidote to boredom, Moscow City is it. The mind-boggling range and diversity of things to do, places to eat, parks, historical monuments and more means that a vacation in Moscow has a wealth of activities to offer for every type of traveler, from young families to retirees.

Reasons to Vacation in Moscow in 2022

The Bolshoi theatre is familiar to almost everyone as Russia’s grandest theatre, but what people don’t know is that there are many more bolshoi (big) sites in Moscow that are worth travelling all the way to Moscow to see. For more than 100 years, the world’s biggest bell has been hidden behind the Kremlin’s walls and inside Moscow’s main park (which is bigger than some countries!) there is the world’s largest outdoor ice-rink. Travelers that visit Moscow can stay at the Izmailovo, Europe’s biggest hotel, then eat at the largest and most historic McDonald’s in Europe and after that have fun at the largest European indoor theme park!

Ancient Past & Stunning Architecture:

As those who travel to Moscow will see, just because Moscow is a city of record-breaking, glitzy high-rises doesn’t mean that there is no history. On the famous Arbat street, time-worn, wooden storehouses and century-old churches are squashed up against grey, soviet blocks which are then towered over by 21st century office-blocks. Unlike its much younger sibling, St Petersburg, Moscow’s roots stretch way back to the 12th century. Within the walls of the Kremlin, the city’s oldest building the Cathedral of Assumption can be admired in all its 500+ years of age.

Culture & Convenience

For a foreigner who has never visited Russia, Moscow is the perfect stepping stone into this great land of mystery. From the country’s best classical ballet troupes to snow-white troikas trotting through the parks, all the highlights of Russian culture can be had in Moscow without any of the complications that would be expected in other, less developed regions of Russia.

Cheap as Caviar

In Moscow, everything is bargain when with the current foreign exchange rates being what they are. Even caviar doesn’t seem so dear when the exchange rate is at 60rub to the dollar, so go on indulge yourself! Take your 2022 vacation in Moscow and have the best of both worlds, with European luxury at very affordable prices.

sfpga junior tour 2022

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

We had a great time both in Moscow and St Petersburg. Your travel agency was excellent in coordinating the whole trip. Everything worked like clockwork. The guides assigned to us were very nice and friendly. They had a great knowledge of their subjects. The cars and the drivers were great. The hotels were good and the itinerary was good. All in all, it was a wonderful experience. It was nice dealing with you and your company. Thank you very much for a great Russian experience. Have a great future ahead
