Jimmy Buffett (born December 25, 1946) is an American ‘gulf and western’, rock, surf, and country singer, songwriter, business man, and author, hailing from Pascagoula, Mississippi, U.S.

Having started his musical life playing the trombone in his high school band, Buffett moved on to play the guitar in his freshman year at Auburn University. With the release of his debut album “Down to Earth” in 1970, Buffet continued to grace the streets and beaches with his busking, honing his skills and developing the beach-bum persona he later became known for.

Jimmy Buffett’s second studio album “High Cumberland Jubilee” was lost by his label Barnaby, and didn’t appear until 1976. The singer-songwriter subsequently signed with ABC-Dunhill Records who issued the albums “White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean” in 1973, and the more thoughtful “Living and Dying in 3/4 Time” in 1974. However, it wasn’t until the 1977 album “Changes in Latitudes”, led by the Top Ten single “Margaritaville”, that Buffett truly became a household name for his tropically-themed soft rock.

By the mid-1980s, with dwindling chart sales but a devoted and prominent fan base dubbed the “Parrotheads”, Buffet would tour regularly, and later tried his hand club management and fiction writing. The live album “Feeding Frenzy” was issued in 1990, followed by the best-selling box set “Boats, Bars, and Ballads” in 1992. An album of original material “Fruitcakes” became one of Buffett’s fastest-selling albums, and paved the way for the almost-as-successful “Barometer Soup” in 1995 and “Banana Wind” in 1996.

Towards the end of the millennium having worked on a musical adaptation of the Herman Wouk novel “Don’t Stop the Carnival”, Buffet released “Beach House on the Moon” and “Live: Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday”. After creating his own label Mailboat and releasing a string of concert recordings, Buffet returned with new material, issuing “Far Side of the World” in 2002. The ever-popular musician went on to release the album “License to Chill” in 2004, “Take the Weather with You” in 2006, and “Buffett Hotel” in 2009.

Live reviews

Jimmy Buffett puts on an amazing show! From the second you get there you're surrounded by some of the most colorful people you'll ever see. Everybody brings their own bit of Margaritaville with them. Some first time attendees walk around bearing "Buffett Virgin" signs. From cars turned into boats, to homemade beaches, to bartenders throwing snowballs, to men in coconut bras, the parking lot party is best described as a drunken free-for-all fueled by tropical drinks. You will see things there that you will never see anywhere else. There is no party like a Jimmy Buffett tailgate party. Once inside, make sure to watch out for beach balls, because they will be flying everywhere. Once the concert starts, Buffett does not disappoint. The man is lively and exciting, jokes with the crowd, and obviously loves what he does. Only at one of his concerts will you ever see thousands of grown adults all pretending to be sharks for the song "Fins." Buffett's back-up, The Coral Reefer Band is fantastic. Nadirah in particular has an unbelievable voice, and the amazing steel drum playing will immediately bring you down to some far away island. Mr. Buffett keeps the setlist interesting with a mix of old favorites ("Cheeseburger in Paradise" in particular brings a huge response from the crowd) new songs, and even a few covers. His cover of Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl" is an old throwback, but Buffett has recently taken to performing Zac Brown Band's "Free." This song especially is a feel-good, magical one. In short, a Jimmy Buffett concert is one of the best, most unbelievable experiences a person can have, and makes for a night you'll never forget. Fins up!

Jimmy Buffett July 8, 2017, Riverbend Music Center, Cincinnati

HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE

This was Buffet's 50th show at Riverbend. I've been to 25 of them by my count. My fiscal year begins and ends with the Jimmy Buffett show in Cincinnati. This year was the exception to the rule and it really had nothing to do with Jimmy Buffett. Riverbend allowed so many tailgaters in who had no tickets or intention of going to the show, That when actual ticket holders started showing up at 6 PM, there was no place for us to park. So Riverbend had no choice but to just let us sit on the bridge. From the time we arrived and could actually see the Riverbend, it took us three hours to get in and finally find a parking spot. But then they didn't even have personnel out there trying to help concert goers get in and get parked. They had abandoned everyone. Drivers were left to unload all of the passengers and continue on in the motionless parking line. Always thought I would go to Jimmy Buffett shows until he quit touring, But after this, I will not be attending another Jimmy Buffett show at Riverband ever again. I pay too much money to miss half the show. If he tours next year, I will check him out somewhere that has a better grasp on their parking situation.

Veteran country rocker Jimmy Buffett still has the ability to transport audiences to his private paradise island with his surf style music. Well into his 60s, the star knows the influence that his easy listening music has had on people's lives and the crowd is made up of original fans as well as new coverts who may have been brought up listening to Buffett's music.

Jimmy is completely at ease onstage and performs with a huge smile on his face throughout the show. The audience's enthusiasm spurs him on as they sing, cheer and applaud throughout. There are roars of approval for fan favourites including 'Come Monday' and 'Changes in Latitudes, Changes in Attitudes'. The musician still has an impressive amount of skill with his guitar and his supporting band are also incredibly well trained.

The set is only punctuated by Jimmy himself conversing with his crowds with stories and meanings of songs. He has of course been touring for over four decades so he knows how to tease the crowd before he allows his band to begin the introduction to 'Margaritaville'. This is a wonderfully inclusive conclusion to a thoroughly enjoyable trip to Buffet's paradise.

I first saw Jimmy Buffet back in 1993. I was 14 years old and it made a huge impression on me at that age.

Back then the parrot heads were much younger, wilder, and drunker. It was like a mini mardie gras and it was tons of fun. I saw him again this year and their was a huge crowd but the parrot heads were older and more toned down. It still had all of the same kinds of things but just more toned down. You didn’t see as many flashing women or really drunk people. But the music was still great.

He did all of his hits, the same ones he has been doing for almost 4 decades. He sounded great and he did show some age. He played for more than two hours and ended with a cover song of “Brown Eyed Girl”. His band sounded great and they were really tight.

He continues to attract tons of people to his shows and does not have any problem selling out shows every summer. It is really amazing that he can still do that considering he has not had any new hit songs in more than 20 years. But the old shows of the 1980’s and 1990’s are missed.

Great Show Saturday Night in Cigal in Paris, amazing athmosphere, Jimmy with his 14 piece Talented band Nailed it firmy to the mast with a great seletion of old and new songs including a great solo to end the night well worth the trip, Paris, sunny weekend,Parrotheads how could you not love it cant wait until next year, Gerry

the concert was absolutely awesome. the venue was good as well. Jimmy Buffett still can keep people on their feet and involved in the shows!! I would go again. The crew members for the venue were very organized and knowledgeable of the facility. We got in to our seats without a problem. It was good that there were plenty of restrooms on all floors.

Found out Jimmy was to be in concert on Maui 3 days after we were supposed to leave. Sacrificed my plane ticket, booked more hotel nights and got close-up seats. WORTH EVERY PENNY!!!

Got home to find he was playing in Seattle! Booked tickets for 4 and had the time of our lives! Two Buffett concerts in a month? A dream come true! Come back, Jimmy!!!

I have wanted to see Jimmy Buffett since I first heard him 38 years ago. And I finally got the change at La Cigale in Paris - Excellent venue and excellent seating. The concert was amazing. He has a certain style and attracts a certain crowd that can't help but project a feel-good factor. He is still rocking. See you next year Jimmy

Jimmy did an outstanding job in KC. He played many songs i had not heard at his concerts before. He did a duet with Carolina Jones Trip Around the Sun which is one of my favorites. He filled the house and the Parrotheads were rocking. Jommy never fails to play the standards everyone knows & loves. Just glad he is still touring!

Jimmy Buffett shares plans after getting out of Boston hospital

By WBZ-News Staff

May 23, 2023 / 9:39 AM EDT / CBS Boston

BOSTON - Jimmy Buffett says he's ready to "get myself back in good shape," after he was hospitalized in Boston for health issues "that needed immediate attention."

The "Margaritaville" singer thanked fans for their support and well-wishes in a post on Friday. He said he would be heading home for some fishing and sailing, and working on his health.

"Once I am in shape, we will look at the when's and where's of shows," Buffett posted to Facebook. "I think playing is as therapeutic for me as it is for fans to listen and sing along."

quick update - Posted by Jimmy Buffett and the Coral Reefers on  Friday, May 19, 2023

The hospitalization forced Buffett to cancel a weekend show in Charlestown, South Carolina with his Coral Reefer Band. The 76-year-old also postponed tour dates at the end of 2022,  citing health issues  and a "brief hospitalization."

But Buffett seems optimistic that he'll be back on the road again soon.

"Looking forward to announcing a new date for Charleston as well as some new shows! Fins up!" Buffett wrote.

Peter Mayer’s Stars and Promises tour to pay tribute to Jimmy Buffett

From the Boston Globe: Coral Reefer Band members honor Jimmy Buffett ahead of Christmas benefit concert in Cambridge

Local Parrot Heads are in for a holiday treat, as brothers and Coral Reefer Band members Peter and Jim Mayer are set to perform at a benefit concert in Cambridge Saturday.

The upcoming show at Harvard-Epworth United Methodist Church is part of the annual “Stars and Promises” tour , which began in 1999 in support of Peter’s Christmas album of the same name. After 24 years, the concert comes to the Boston area for the first time; it will also mark the first onstage performance together by the brothers since Jimmy Buffett died in September at the age of 76 from skin cancer.

We love Boston,” Peter Mayer told the Globe in a phone interview, recalling the many performances with Buffett at Great Woods (now the Xfinity Center) in Mansfield. “It’s feels like a second home to us in terms of us touring live.”

The siblings-turned-bandmates fondly remember their first meeting with Buffett in 1988. It followed the demise of the Mayer brothers’ previous group, P.M., which also featured drummer Roger Guth.

The timing turned out to be fortuitous, as the group’s producer introduced them to Buffett as he began work on his 1989 album “Off to See the Lizard.”

While the brothers and Guth were brought in as the studio band, Buffett would keep them on as part of his touring Coral Reefer Band.

“I’ll never forget him walking into the studio. We had been setting up, and he says, ‘So this is my new band? Let’s have a boat drink,’ ” recalled Jim Mayer, who now lives in Belmont. “And we did. That was the beginning of it.”

This weekend’s concert in Cambridge will pay tribute to Buffett with performances of a trio of holiday songs recorded by the singer: “Merry Christmas Alabama,” “Santa Stole Thanksgiving,” and “Christmas Island.” Peter believes the tunes showcase not only the “humorous side of Buffett” but also his skill as a songwriter.

“Jimmy was a deep writer and an amazing lyricist,” said Peter, the lead guitarist for the Coral Reefer Band. “ ‘Santa Stole Thanksgiving’ is one of those songs where you look at the lyrics and you’re like, ‘This is amazing.’ ”

Beyond his songwriting chops, Jim praised Buffett for his ability to connect with concertgoers, noting how “the audience was Jimmy’s instrument.” The Coral Reefer Band bassist and backup vocalist says his fondest memory of Buffett occurred at a concert in Mansfield when a man showed up in the front row “dressed in a full reenactment, Revolutionary War minuteman outfit.”

“He was standing at attention,” said Jim. “We start the concert and we play the first song, and I’m a little bit like, ‘OK, this is a little odd.’ ”

“After three songs, Jimmy leaned down, he said, ‘At ease solider.’ That’s Jimmy Buffett. He understands his audience, he knows how to read them, and the guy sat down and enjoyed the show.”

In addition to honoring Buffett through song, the concert will serve as a nonprofit showcase, with 100 percent of the proceeds donated to the participating charities as selected by the ticket purchaser. According to organizers, many of the concert’s ticket proceeds are earmarked for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, where Buffett sought treatment during his illness.

jimmy buffett tour 2023 boston

Concertgoers will hear more than just Buffett tunes, as the brothers will perform classics like “Christmas Time is Here” from “A Charlie Brown Christmas” and holiday tunes from Peter’s lengthy Christmas music catalog. Peter released his latest album, “Songs for the Birds,” in 2022, and was inspired to write the record while observing a woman feeding birds daily in Boston Common.

As for why Buffett’s music remains so popular after all these years, Peter attributes it to the singer’s “charisma.”

“Jimmy had it,” Peter said. “When he talked to you, you felt like you were exactly where you needed to be.”

For Jim, the power of Buffett’s music is in its ability to bring people together to have a good time, regardless of their differences.

“In this day and age, it’s hard to get two people to agree on anything, and yet, there we were with 12,000 to 15,000 people, who had all agreed to show up at the same time and enjoy music together.”

The “Stars and Promises” benefit concert will be held at Harvard-Epworth United Methodist Church,1555 Massachusetts Ave., Cambridge, Dec. 9 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available at eventbrite.com .

Jimmy Buffett's final performance was a surprise appearance in Rhode Island

Jimmy buffett, who died friday, sept. 1, after four years of fighting merkel cell skin cancer, continued to perform during treatment, playing his last show -- a surprise appearance in rhode island -- in early july., by kaitlin mckinley becker • published september 4, 2023 • updated on september 5, 2023 at 2:26 am.

When Jimmy Buffett made a surprise appearance this summer in Rhode Island, no one knew then that it would be the final performance of his storied career.

The "Margaritaville" singer died Friday, Sept. 1 , at his home in Sag Harbor, Long Island, after a four-year battle with Merkel cell carcinoma , according to his website . He was 76.

Buffett had continued to perform during his treatment for the rare, aggressive skin cancer .

In May, he announced he was rescheduling a concert with his Coral Reefer band at Credit One Stadium in Charleston, South Carolina, because he was hospitalized due to some urgent health issues.

"I had a sudden change of plans this week that affected us all," Buffett wrote on Facebook on May 18 . "I had to stop in Boston for a check-up but wound up back in the hospital to address some issues that needed immediate attention."

Weeks later, on July 2, the beloved singer-songwriter surprised fans with a 45-minute set at the Sunset Cove in Portsmouth, RI.

The owner of the waterfront café, Mike MacFarlane, told NBC10 Boston affiliate WJAR , that he was in awe when Buffett unexpectedly asked if he could perform there.

"You can't make that up. The wow factor was unbelievable," MacFarlane told WJAR.

At the time, the Sunset Cove shared photos to Facebook of Buffett singing , writing, "Nothing better than a surprise performance by Jimmy Buffett!! We've never seen so many smiles at one time!"

The legend also posed that night for a photo with Portsmouth police officers -- wearing a Hawaiian shirt with a drink in hand.

According to MacFarlane, hundreds were coming to see Buffett's band member Mac McAnally in concert that day, when the phone rang.

"Mac got a hold of me and said, 'Hey, Jimmy wants to come up and do a few songs. What do you think?' And I said, 'Let's find a way to make it happen,'" MacFarlane recalled to WJAR. "It was just impromptu. Just wanted to get out of the house."

Buffett, who was at his home on Long Island, "wrote a note that said 'be back in a minute'" and then flew to the Ocean State for his surprise show, WJAR reports.

"He was as genuine, sincere and humble and appreciative," MacFarlane said.

MacFarlane and "Parrotheads" across the world have been mourning the loss of the icon, with fans sharing their condolences on social media, including celebrities like Blake Shelton, Jon Bon Jovi and Elton John .

"I think most people are in shock," MacFarlane said. "It's going to be a void for a lot of people. But his music will live on forever. A lot of people have great memories of his concerts."

"'Margaritaville' will live here forever, and it's always going to be 5'oclock somewhere at Sunset Cove," MacFarlane added, sharing that his café is currently working on t-shirts to commemorate Buffett's final performance -- with proceeds going to charity.

"Two days ago, I was just back from a trip to the Bahamas, thawing out from the California 'winter tour,' and chomping at the bit to get to Charleston. I had to stop in Boston for a check-up but wound up back in the hospital to address some issues that needed immediate attention," he wrote in a message to fans.

Locals mourn passing of Jimmy Buffett who died Friday at the age of 76

jimmy buffett tour 2023 boston

Jimmy Buffett, who died Friday at age 76, was remembered by locals as a man who truly " lived his life like a song until his very last breath " as the online epitaph on his website read.

Ruben "Lounge Lizard" Morgan of Ormond Beach, a local musician, met Buffett at a folk music club in Atlanta called The Bistro when Buffett was first making a name for himself. He knew the guy had something special going on.

“He was coming up with so many ideas for songs,” Morgan said. "He was a literary scholar. I could see that he was going to accelerate in his career in the near future.”

Did he ever. At that time, Buffett only had one album out, Down to Earth. But by the end of his career, Buffett recorded 29 studio albums.

Margaritaville and beyond

While best known for his music, Buffett has created a business empire with a tropical theme.

Locally, the singer-songwriter is known for a master-planned housing development named after his signature tune from 1977, "Margaritaville" about laidback living in the tropics. Located at 2400 LPGA Blvd., the project is a partnership between Margaritaville Holdings and developer Minto Communities.

Buffett bought a house in the development and according to a 2018 News-Journal story , even dropped by to say hello to some residents. Kelley and Bill Sarantis were told to expect a visit from "some people from corporate."

The couple assumed that meant the developers of the Jimmy Buffett-inspired 55-and-older community.

They were surprised to find out the guest knocking on their front door was none other than the singer-songwriter himself.

"I walked from the kitchen and saw out the window that it was Jimmy Buffett," recalled Kelley Sarantis. "He said, 'Hey, neighbor!'"

'Chill lifestyle'

Julie Rinehart, a Daytona Beach musician and music lover who lives in Margaritaville, had the opportunities to experience a Buffett concert from backstage.

“My husband and I were friends with Peter Mayer, his guitarists, and to that extent, we were often privileged enough to go backstage and meet Jimmy’s whole family, his kids, and all the musicians,” she said.

Rinehart has been a Buffett fan since she was in college. She recalled saving her serving tips to buy his albums. Over the years, she has attended roughly 20 of Buffett’s concerts.

“I will remember him from all the wonderful concerts that he gave [and] the great influence I think he’s had on my kids,” she said. “And I will always keep some of his song lyrics dear to my heart. His music was creative. It lets people think out of the box. It validates some of their wildest dreams about living a relaxed, chill lifestyle.”

A special connection

Many locals feel connected to Buffett and his music.

Mike Toole, owner of Atlantic Sounds Record Store in Daytona Beach, said artists like Buffett gave him the enthusiasm he needed to kickstart a career and open his first store. As he was first getting started, Toole would come home from work, put on Buffett’s live album, and “crank it.”

“If my neighbors would’ve heard it one more time, I think they were going to call the police because I was playing it over and over again,” he said.

Toole was inspired by Buffett’s ability to take life lightly, and he commended the artist for making music enjoyable, uplifting, and honest.

Savoring life

Buffett taught his audience to savor the good times, according to former WESH-TV reporter Bob Kealing who lives in Longwood.

“There’s nothing wrong with kicking back and having a good time,” Kealing said. “And I think Jimmy really encapsulated the lifestyle that many of us find so seductive about the keys in Key West. It’s a magical place, and I think he put it into words and music better than anybody I’ve ever heard.”

As a longtime fan, Kealing bought his wife tenth-row tickets and backstage passes to see Buffett in Orlando in the nineties as one of his “initial attempts to impress" her.

“That was a really memorable night,” Kealing said. “One of many that have to do with Jimmy Buffett.”

Jimmy Buffett will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame later this year. That’s great news for the late musician and his following, but it comes as something of a huge surprise–but not because he’s undeserving of the honor.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has decided to honor Buffett not as a performer, but rather in a different capacity. The organization is choosing to recognize the laidback rocker for “musical excellence.”

Buffett wins his entrance into the group in a non-voted category, one which has seen many well-known stars finally get their due–or at least some version of it. His inclusion was chosen behind the scenes, and revealed as a delightful shock.

He isn’t the only artist set to receive this specific honor from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year. Buffett is joined in the musical excellence category by MC5, Norman Whitfield, and Dionne Warwick.

Buffett’s inclusion is surprising, given the fact that he’s never been nominated for the more traditional honor before. His name hadn’t been mentioned by the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, so the fact that he was honored in any way is unexpected.

WhatsApp Brand New iPhone Feature Just Launched That s Much Easier To Use

New apple id password reset issue hitting iphone ipad and macbook users, messi blocks fc barcelona star from joining inter miami reports el nacional.

The timing of this recognition does make perfect sense, though. Buffett passed away in September of 2023, and since then, he has been mourned by his massive fan base and many well-known musicians, especially those in the rock world. Following his death due to a private battle with cancer, many have called for the highly successful and influential artist to earn some critical love, which largely eluded him in his lifetime.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s class of 2024 includes A Tribe Called Quest, Cher, Dave Matthews Band, Mary J. Blige, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, Peter Frampton, and Ozzy Osbourne. Several other nominees didn’t make the cut this time around, including Eric B. and Rakim, Jane’s Addiction, Lenny Kravitz, Mariah Carey, Oasis, Sade, and Sinead O’Connor.

Jimmy Buffett had been battling cancer as he sought treatment in Boston, his website reveals

On May 30, 2013, Jimmy Buffett (center) joined other performer for the final performance at the Boston Strong benefit concert at TD Garden. The concert raised money for victims of the Boston Marathon bombings.

In May 2013, when Boston grieved for the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings, Jimmy Buffett joined hometown musicians James Taylor, Aerosmith, the Dropkick Murphys, and other musical luminaries to perform a benefit concert at TD Garden.

Buffett performed his iconic “Margaritaville” at the event billed as “Boston Strong: An Evening of Support and Celebration.” Like all acts, he performed for free for a show that raised more than $1.5 million for the One Fund, set up to aid the victims.

During his performance , Buffett sprinkled in regional references, including to a “Nantucket cutie,” who maybe “came down from Freeport,” [Maine] and to locally caught quahogs.

The benefit was one of several special ties that the singer, known more for his home base of Key West, had with New England. Buffett died Friday at one of his homes, on Long Island, four years after being diagnosed with Merkel cell skin cancer, his family wrote in a death notice released Saturday night. He was 76.

His final performance was a surprise appearance in July in Rhode Island, the announcement said. Buffett joined Mac McAnally, a longtime member of his Coral Reefer Band, during a show in Portsmouth, on July 2, the Providence Journal reported .

Buffett’s health issues had brought him to Boston. His family asked that donations in his name be made to Brigham and Women’s Hospital or the Dana Farber Cancer Institute, along with MD Andersen Cancer Center in Houston and Jimmy Buffett’s Singing Foundation for Change.

“The legendary Jimmy Buffett was a gift to generations of music lovers,” said Sue Rapple, chief development officer at Brigham and Women’s, in a statement Sunday. “We are deeply honored his family has entrusted the Brigham to be part of his legacy of generosity and helping others.”

In May, after a checkup in Boston, Buffett announced he was hospitalized to “address some issues that needed some immediate attention” and would cancel a show in Charleston, S.C.

“Getting old is not for sissies, I promise you,” he wrote on X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter, in May.

He died “surrounded by his family, friends, music and dogs,” according to a statement posted to his social media accounts and to his website early Saturday morning.

“He lived his life like a song till the very last breath and will be missed beyond measure by so many,” the statement said.

Buffett, whose Caribbean-themed music made every day seem like vacation, was mourned by his legion of fans proudly known as “Parrot Heads.” He was a familiar presence in New England, performing everywhere from Fenway Park in Boston, to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, to the Xfinity Center in Mansfield.

“No one did music, or lived life, quite like Jimmy Buffett,” the Xfinity Center posted Saturday on X,. “His laid-back island vibes brought his fans endless joy through his music and live performances. Sending a heartfelt farewell to the music legend.”

Buffett’s latest performance in Boston was in August 2018 at Fenway Park, a show the Globe described at the time as “smooth sailing.”

“Little did I know that just by being authentic and moving to Key West and writing about it, it would turn into this. That was never planned. To be successful would be wonderful but the chances of that happening and pulling that gold ring are minuscule, but I was lucky enough to do it,” Buffett told the Globe ahead of the show.

The Boston area left its mark on him. He wrote the song “Boat Drinks” after leaving former Bruin Derek Sanderson’s bar in Boston on a cold night and he has credited WBCN DJ Charles Laquidara as an early supporter. Buffett also “recalled nights at Paul’s Mall and the Jazz Workshop, as well as the Chicken Box on Nantucket,” the Globe reported.

And there is also a plan to bring a Margaritaville restaurant to Faneuil Hall in Boston. The location’s website offers no details as to opening dates, but a spokesperson for Margaritaville said there had been “some delays” with getting the location open and there was not a confirmed date available to share yet.

“Artist, performer, writer, navigator, friend, and entrepreneur — it is hard to imagine anyone who has ever brought so much fun to so many,” Margaritaville said in a statement posted to social media and to its website. “What Jimmy loved most was getting on a stage — big, small, indoors, outdoors, anywhere in the world — and changing the attitude and latitude of audiences to a vacation state of mind.

“We celebrate his life, believe his spirit lives on like a never-ending encore, and will see his radiant smile and that twinkle in his eye when we look towards the sun and will continue to share his way of life wherever, whenever we can,” the statement reads. “Fins Up Forever.”

For a few days each year, Jimmy Buffett turned Cincinnati into 'Margaritaville'

jimmy buffett tour 2023 boston

Cincinnati isn't "Margaritaville," but for the few days each year Jimmy Buffett came to town, it was.

Walking through a pre-show tailgate, fans, affectionately nicknamed "Parrotheads," could be seen wearing grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts, coconut bras, leis and other tiki or beachy attire. They set up bars and swimming pools and crafted hats that featured parrots, flamingos and whatever else would fit.

Buffett played his last concert in Cincinnati in July 2022; he cancelled his 2023 show. He died Friday at 76 .

But his connection to Cincinnati and his fans here will live on.

Buffett coined the term “Parrothead” while performing at a 1985 Cincinnati concert. During the show at Timberwolf Ampitheater, Timothy Schmit, a former member of Buffett's Coral Reefer Band, noticed fans wearing parrot hats and Hawaiian shirts. He called them Parrotheads, a nod to the Grateful Dead fans' moniker: Deadheads.

His song "Fins" is about a woman who "came down from Cincinnati … lookin' for some peace and quiet" who finds herself surrounded by guys at the bar – "land sharks."

Jimmy Buffett: A look at my first time wastin' away in Margaritaville

Buffett was a mainstay at Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center, playing 54 shows in 35 years. Prior to that Buffett performed at Timberwolf Amphitheater at King’s Island.

In 1993, he performed five consecutive nights here, drawing 92,000 fans, according to a Cincinnati Post article at the time. Cincinnati was a "Parrothead petri dish," the article said, and other cities couldn't match its enthusiasm for the musician.

“Jimmy Buffett became synonymous with summer in Cincinnati,” said Rosemarie Moehring, director of marking for Music & Event Management, Inc., which runs Riverbend. “It was something people looked forward to every year.”

Moehring said there was nothing surprising about "Parrothead" originating in Cincinnati.

“People looked forward to and planned for concerts,” Moehring said. “He brought people together. His music made you feel good.”

2014 tour: Jimmy Buffett tosses Riverbend crowd a few curveballs

The only year Buffett missed playing Riverbend was during COVID in 2020. But Buffett was the first show back in 2021.

“2021 was really special,” Moehring said. “You could tell he was just as happy to be on the stage again as the audience was to be seeing him again. It was extra special.”

Moehring had the opportunity to meet Buffett once 10 years ago.

“He was as kind and as funny as you would imagine him to be,” she said.

Earlier this year, Newport officials announced a Jimmy Buffett Margaritaville Resort would anchor the Newport on the Levee development. The hotel is expected to open in 2026.
